    SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS

I'm going to dm this as a oneshot
(before you ask, no, it doesn't really exist)

the characters are created by me according to the player's stories and actions during their travels

stats are vigor, agility, wits and courage
abilities are skills like balance, tumble or archer
I'll keep everything very simple and vague

    my ideas so far:
    - the player's note their character's heart's desire and show it to me
-they meet at the ancient shrine and describe themselves
    - every player's weapon of choice get's enchanted (like wanders sword)
    - they are strangers to each other but have the same goal: kill the colossus
    - they know that only one of them will be granted his/her wish
    - then the group travels towards the colossus
    - they face common hardships like crossing rivers, cliffs and so on
    - at night they rest and tell stories of themselves
    - I'll hand out their now finished character sheets
    - they fight the colossus
    - beating it is only possible through teamwork and they have to defeat his 3 weak points

    that's about it

do you know mechanics to make skill checks like climbing more interesting and exciting?
maybe like a mini-game or something like that?

do you have any improvement suggestions or additional ideas?
    >> Anonymous 01/05/11(Wed)18:34 No.13410887
    oh I forgot:
I'm going to use a trust system
according to their actions with each other they can choose to give each other trust points
these can be used to either aid those you trust
but it can also be used by them to backstab you instead

the point is that only one of them will be granted his wish
and the whole point in killing the colossus is of course that their character gets their wish granted

trust point will probably be something like bonus dice

example: player a trusts player b with 2 points because he helped him when he almost fell off a cliff
later when fighting the colossus he chooses to aid player b by drawing the colossus attention on himself so b can jump on its back
but because player b is a selfish prick he chooses to not help player a and use the remaining dice to fire and arrow at him so there is one less between him and his wish

I always thought that a central point to the atmosphere of SotC was the solitude, and-- resulting from it-- the silence. How are you going to reconcile that with an entire party of adventurers?

Only works if it's two players and one is a horse.

Also, colossi is the plural of colossus. And the Wanderer's sword was a stolen holy relic taken from the land of man for the purpose of freeing Dormin, it wasn't enchanted by him.

Also, how do you intend to incorporate the price each must pay for the bargain. Or how it will even work with multiple heroes.

    >And you plan to give SotC's gigantic feel how exactly ?
not by making the colossus feel huge but the players feel tiny
mostly through descriptions but also by making them use the enviroment
I decided to make a colossus that can't be climbed from the legs
they'll need to climb the buildings in the area first and then jump on to it
when he walks they will trip if they are too close to his feet
    and so on

You plan on creating the player's characters according to the stories they'll give you... At a convention ?

That'll take an awful lot of time.

Also, they will make a plan involving explosives. Be prepared for it. Even if... No, especially if there is no explosives around.

Might be better to try to disguise the game from being an actual rip of SotC. Could try to make it more of a Monster Hunter type game or make it a dystopian future setting with massive mechanical guardians and only the PCs having the right access codes to disable them. Need assistance to distract the beast while the enter the access codes on the terminals on their bodies though. Defeating a golem causes it to shut down and the PCs can salvage the parts they need to build their "god machine".

something as simple as 3-7 segments to show grip or how far up the colossus they are.

I like D&D4e's skill challenges though, like X amount of fuck ups before colossus tosses you off, use of different skills may reveal new path, weakness, grip, etc.

    gald you like it

    they're production sketches
    mostly from the artbook

team ico is very dedicated to their creations
so unlike other game studios they make these available along with technical descriptions and making ofs

    how about this:

for holding on to the colossus when he tries to shake you off you set a difficulty from 2 to 6
the difficulty determines how many dice you use to make a tower
the player has to flip a dice towards it so it touches the tower without making it fall
the attempts he has equal his vigor stat
if he has the ability grip he can choose to sacrifice attempts to lower the tower

this could be used in combination with endurance points
if you don't hit the tower you loose a point
if you throw it over you fall 1 step x difficulty

to hit with a ranged weapon like a bow the player has to flip a dice towards another dice that is difficulty x 10cm away
the attempts he has equal his agility stat
if he has the archer ability he can choose to sacrifice attempts to shorten the distance

it sounds fairly easy, but trust me it isn't if you haven't trained it a little
I'm also using small d6 which makes it harder

    i just acquired SotC,
    it's fucking amazing.
    I suspect bad ending though.
I mean, how can you expect a happy end when disembodied voices offer to raise the dead in exchange for killing peacful guardians?
(guardians that are quite obviously to keep some great evil locked up)
I mean, who didn't see it coming?

Luckily for you ICO is usually in bargain bins. And I know this will start a shitstorm but people just hate games like ICO and Shadow of the Colossuss, it always tends to be some kind of: Groans of War, Need for Shit, Grand Theft Testicles and other games that are basicaly bovril. The crap games get overhyped. And these hidden gems stay pretty much forgotten...

I myself just finished the second session of a campaign based off this the other day. I'm running it in Pathfinder and it's going along pretty well. The players just defeated a smaller colossus based on a spider, but now I'm gonna ramp things up.
This thread was just what I needed, thanks OP.

I'm looking through all of these and remember for the most part how hard each battle was in it's own unique way. There was always a twist. Man I wish I had my old PS2.

    >About to go to bed, OP posts more stuff, would rage but I already archived this thread earlier so that I won't miss any of it.

And after a long sleep and a long day of work, I come home to find EVEN MORE content posted and the thread going strong.

    MFW

Also. I WISH I actually had something to contribute to this, but my ideas for a SotC campaign were less fleshed out than OP's and this has given me a wealth of ideas to expand on. So all I can say is thank you. Thank you SO MUCH.

All I have are a few meagre images that just show off the existing Colossi that made it into the game, which I will proceed to dump if anyone wishes. I kinda want to save room in the thread for OP's glorious collection.

that you can knocks nuts off of for health?

love all the little touches in this game
    >> Anonymous 01/07/11(Fri)05:20 No.13428624
    >>13428608

there's actually a whole bunch of trees you can do that with. If you knock the tails off of white-tailed lizards and pick them up, you gain stamina as well. White-tailed lizards are commonly found near save shrines.

It's the only way to reach the secret garden during the game (you need beast stamina to climb the main temple)
    >> Anonymous 01/07/11(Fri)05:23 No.13428635
    >>13428624

If you wanted to get there on the first play-through anyways. I just beat the game so much that, were it still visible, my stamina meter would easily consume the entire screen.
