38 KB Necromancer Quest IV Daerth 01/27/11(Thu)21:57 No.13684532
Investigating the truth before your mentor's death, you discover a nest of varghoul hiding in the mayor's attic.
After communing with the dead, you recruit a ranger in the local inn to guide you to the camp. You were able to pinpoint the relative position of the creature.
Travelling in the forest to put an end to the threat, you had two unfortunate encounter with creepers. But at least, you've finally arrived to destination.
In front of you looms a patch of trees bigger and thicker than the average. The coverage is enough to block most of the sunlight. You can feel the chill of the death hanging around.
The creature is nearby, and now the time to put an end to this.

    Welcome to Necromancer Quest

    > You are a Necromancer
    > You are able to cast spells up to level 3
    > You have crafted a masterwork clay golem, and summoned a raven familiar
    > Traveling with you is Minx, a female half-elven ranger.

    Fuck Yeah Necromancer Quest!

Alright, so let's prepare ourselves, get our mace ready and our golem in war-form.

Let's have our raven familiar fly up and try to do some aerial recon. I want to save on spells if I can.

I was gonna say, if someone could post our Divine & Arcane Spellbook. We might want to buff ourselves and our Half-Elven companion before we venture any further.

Allright. You hand Minx a bottle of holy water, explaining to her it should be effective against what is lurking nearby.
Then you cast Hide from Undead, then detect Undead.
You find a strong aura in the thick of the woods, near the treelines.
Once this is done, you prepare your shield and mace for the confrontation, while she prepares her bow.
    >> Anonymous 01/27/11(Thu)22:44 No.13685030
Okay, Hide from Undead is a 1st level spell, and one casting will get both us and Minx. By having the golem attack first, we can get into better position before attacking, and the spell ending.

False Life and Defending Bone are both 2nd level spells, so I think we should only use 1.
    I'll go for Defending Bone.

A direct hit, and the holy water makes it scream in pain as the water splash on him. Smokes rise up and the smell of undead flesh melting is unbearable.

Then at your mental command, the raven drops its flask on top of the varghoul, another direct hit.

The giant varghoul has taken quite a beating, but it is still in the fight. Next turn.

The varghoul swoops up on you, its tentacles sliding all along your body, it large wings flapping as it stays aloft in front of your face. You can't do anything but face its gaping maw as it bites into your flesh.

The moment you finish that line, you feel the gift of the dead fading away. Its not completly forgotten, but you will need to research it further and inscribe it into your spellbook. Delvar congratulate you on your victory, and comment that necromancers walking the thin line between life and death were often rewarded with such gifts.

You arrive at the village without further accident. Minx is curious about the reward but you answer that you want to get fully healed at Pelor's temple first.

The priestess takes one look at you and understand you nearly brushed death tonight. The blessing of Pelor wash over your tired soul and cleanse away your wounds. You can't help but to notice that Pelor's rain bowl is shimmering into the rain. You guess its due to his blessing, and the rain water is being blessed as we speak. You also inform the priestess that the threat is over.

Maybe, but i'm still getting bad vibes from that off-handed comment one of the servants made about the ever-full wine bottle being a 'gift from a wandering sorcerer'. We know our Mentor had adventuring friends, and probably did some himself in his youth. This could be someone settling an old score and using the mayor's hatred of Necromancy to do it. Or a powerful necromancer or other mage is moving into the area and intends to set up his own fiefdom, and he wanted all other notable casters in the area taken out. We should check nearby villages and towns for any rumors about other casters or recluses that have vanished or died. We should also contact Mentor's old adventuring party, see if they've experienced anything more unusual than usual.

Both your mentor and the mayor are hesitant to reply to that question. Something happened in the past they were both ashamed off.

You also learn that the mayor often offer his hospitality to traveling wizards and sorcerers. He makes no comment how he met your mentor, but do regurgitates a long list of name you can barely take note off. The most recent is the sorcerer who was hired to enchant the decanter. He was a nosy man, quite polite, bald, wearing crimson robes. You get a name and a place: Varan the Red, traveler from Silverwall.

Also, the amount of knowledge required to create such a complex creature is staggering. It is well beyond your mentor could hope to do. And you know his preference for ghostly creatures.

I think that we should demand that the mayor personally oversee an option to apprehend each and every single person who participated in the lynching. Then, starting with the mayor himself, they will, one by one and in public view in the down square, humbly and sincerely offer their forgiveness for the murder. Any who refuse should see prison terms or be handed over to the clergy. If the mayor refuses this kind offer, appeal to the clergy to have the mayor and all who participated in the lynching imprisoned, tried, and, if found guilty, be given a sentence that the church deems appropriate for the gravity of their offense. Propose this demand for personal apology to the mayor without malice or anger, but with a perfectly calm, grim, serious tone. The proposition to the church will be a humble plea for justice, failing that.

So guys. You spend 3 hours researching the spell, with the guidance of your mentor. It only cost 2000g to put together since it was necromantic in nature.

Beside that, you have accepted to find the source of the horror. All you have is a name and something to scry - but you have can't use divining spells. You also need to find fellow adventurers for the task.

But for now, lets end this session. I'm going to see you guys next week, with a minty fresh module.
