The evening is still young as you walk through your maniple, but your soldiers are so drained that most of them are already retiring for the night. Soldiers not already abed are helping their wounded comrades to the medicae tents or bringing their gear to the smiths in hopes of getting the item in question repaired sooner. You eventually find yourself on the battlefield again, where Laelith is turning the now vacant greathelm Lord Wellis wore to his death over in her hands. "Its quite mundane, save the decorations." she informs you as you draw nearer. "I hope you are coming here from the medicae tents, Justinian" she adds, noting the hobble in your step.

We will need to have this battlefield scoured for possible arcana, then.

"No, I will be headed there once I know the men have been seen to, my injuries can wait for now." you reply easily.

Laelith levels a glare at you "I suppose I will have to drag you to the tent then. Sometimes we think it is better when your wounds leave you incapacitated." she sighs, the flames on her torch growing taller.

"I was headed to the medicae by way of the battlefield, no need to burn me." you defend yourself, taking a step back "Just, make sure we dont miss any arcana on the field." Laelith arches an eyebrow at you as you retreat, not even dignifying your hasty defense with an answer.

    -----CQ-----

It takes until morning for the surgeons and elementalists to work their way over to you, they didnt even see fit to wake you when the elementalist repaired your ribs. In fact, it is Sansa that wakes you a few hours later, in one hand a small writing kit, in the other a list. "How is it you wish to start your day, Commander?"

Nonsense. You forget that Justinian Trentz is badass. I suppose we should get to making a report to the commander in the south that we've stopped the two incoming lords and are currently going to be trapping the land until we receive new orders. Perhaps we should hit the gold mines to the south although I wonder if we should try to negotiate ransom prices from the lordling's father now. Those gold mines could be a nice bargaining chip for more money.

That's the thing - I'm wondering if we can still get money without raiding the cities. The lordling is going to rule over these lands once Blentus is gone, meaning those are his gold mines. Would his father spend more cash to bribe us from hitting those holdings since they are going to be apart of his family soon?

Also, seconding the trapping of nearby water sources.

We really need to have our numbers replenished, though; our maniple is down to half-strength, and the Marauders are at a quarter strength. Without coming back up to normal strength, we can't use them.

The wound isnt terribly large, and has clearly been washed out with water. You want to admonish the boy on his foolishness, but by now he would know your hypocrisy on the matter. "There was work to be done, and when you are indisposed Sansa needs my help around the camp..." he begins.

"She can handle the camp well enough on her own. It would be worse for your wound to fester and take a leg from one of my most able soldiers." you scold the boy, his response dying on his lips "But before you head off to have that scratch taken care of, I would like to have your opinion on how the battle went, in comparison to how you had predicted such an engagement would end."

Wulf sits quietly for a moment before responding "Standing to fight may have worked in the mind of the older soldiers, but considering the numbers it seemed foolhardy to stand to fight, especially with enemy forces behind us. I was the best spoken of that side of the table, and I regularly best Cornelius at our simulated battles, so it fell to me to defend our stance. I would rather live to fight and win another day than stand to die for my duty and honor. So long as Degnar wins in the long run. I was also banking on you having a better plan once we met up with you." he finishes, shocking you with his blunt honesty

I likewise would have preferred not to have fought such a large force. Had I my way I would have harried them night and day with our superior mobility until they were destroyed. But we had orders. Sometimes the orders might not seem the best path we could take, but they are not suggestions. We had to hold them. The reason is simple: They could not be allowed to fall upon the flank of our greater force, smashing the vital supplies and soft underbelly of the army.

While many of our men died here, we saved a great many more... and perhaps the entire campaign.

Lena drops into the stool next to your cot, opposite the one Wulf had sat in "I'm doing well, and, I'm sorry I let such a wound incapacitate me, had the battle not ended I would have burdened the maniple with my weakness."

You ruffle the girls hair "Nonsense, your efforts saved this family much grief and pain." Lena mumbles a quiet thanks "Though, I am curious as to the limitations of the spell you are using to enhance your voice, its limitations and such."

"Did they look angry about it?" you prompt her, Lena shakes her head. "And id anyone have to be ordered to help you to the tents?" again, she shakes her head. You let the silence hang for a moment before asking "How did your battle with the Uurlanthi mage leave you?"

"Exhausted. I could still stand but... my head still throbs, my arms are still drained. I think I will need to increase my arcane knowledge to better combat any mages I encounter in the future." the young mage answers, somewhere between worry and pride on her face and in her voice.

"What does this mean for this soldier?" you promp Laelith, curoius.

"Well, Life elementalism is also sometimes known as nature elementalism, at least when it is used to command plants as opposed to living creatures. The Syptionus Vine feeds off of the power of a nature elementalist, and, acts as a constant source of power to them, much like my torch, shockstones for Wulf, or a bag of rocks would for you. As the mans power grows, the vine will grow as well, covering more of his body. It was not uncommon for the greatest of nature elementalists to be mistaken for awakened trees, so complete was their symbiosis with the vine. The vine will provide him sustenance once it is large enough, though it will drain him until then. With training he will be able to compel the plant to secrete spas and fluids with varying qualities, or to lash out as he could compel any other plant to." "As to the shadow games, houses Errist and Mure were the most outspoken for the war, as were their retainer lords. while houses Jandil and Obstirith and most of their retainers were against conflict. The king remained neutral, waiting to see his Lords decision, where the rest of the kingdom was undecided on the matter, or constantly swaying back and forth. More noble blood flowed during those three years than was spilt in the entirety of the last war with the Empire by my estimate."

His son successfully courted almost a third of the mercenaries currently employed along the eastern border. did most of his fathers work wooing a few other lords into the war camp as well. Though I suppose you effectively ended to that potential threat to Degnar once this war ends." Daeseu answers amiably.

"I suppose I did, and how goes my superiors siege in the south?" you ask, shocked by the sudden revelation.

"Commander Trentz, I am both glad to hear of your swift success, and impressed by your tactical skill. I will be sending my comendations to the Second before I begin the assault on Dyrons Ford. However, as your force is so depleted by the fighting I have selected a new Commander to act as my sentry and rearguard. Survey the area and construct a fort on high ground. Trap the entire field, and have the earth elementalists practice their skills by constructing trench networks.

The week continues fairly uneventfully. You fortify your position enough to feel comfortable and send Wulf off to raid the nearest gold mine, and help Blackbird and his men set up more traps outside of the forest. However, with so many of your men recovering from wounds or fatigue that is about the extent of your efforts while you wait for your relieving commander. The dwarf coming to replace you is an old goatish looking commander, and not much for words or conversation past getting a good idea of where your traps are, though you get the impression that he approves of neither you or your traps.

The ride to your stash goes off equally uneventfully, only stopping at the river long enough to create a large bed of incredibly sturdy spikes in the riverbed. Eventually your caravan slows to a halt outside of your stash. Its about midday when you reach it, and by your estimate it will take until tomorrow morning for your men to find a way to load it all onto your wagons while still being able to ride them themselves. "Commander" a voice asks from behind you, Aurelius, unless your ear betrays you. "I, might I speak my mind?"

"Yes, I believe that she has." Aurelius answers after a few minutes of pondering.

The only problem with not staying for the rest of the offensive, is that we won't get to be part of the Triumph when the High Commander returns to the capital.

Well, we participated quite heavily and are actually a minor hero, (or now maybe not so minor) so I imagine we'll have a spot. Likely up near the front, even. I mean, hell, our information gathering probably saved the offensive from a bleak, crushing demise at the hands of a foe that "shouldn't be there" at all.

Plus, I'm eagerly awaiting our return even as it is. Pax has intimated that something special awaits us, and we've been nothing short of a legendary strategist and tactician. We've beaten a force three to four times our size, two forces over twice our size, and two forces equal to us, all while securing key objectives, operating deep in enemy territory, and saving the Empire's ass from being blindsided by 70,000 men.
