    318 KB Total Annihilation Anonymous 02/22/11(Tue)11:35 No.13997286
What began as a conflict over the transfer of consciousness from flesh to machine escalated into a war which has decimated a million worlds. The Core and the Arm have all but exhausted the resources of a galaxy in their struggle for domination. Both sides now crippled beyond repair, the remnants of their armies continue to battle on ravaged planets, their hatred fuelled by over four thousand years of total war. This is a fight to the death. For each side, the only acceptable outcome is the complete elimination of the other.

Supreme Commander came close, and it was a great game in it's own rights, but TA just had something extra.

I also tend to rate RTS games for how high I can get the causalities to run into.

    I agree and dissagree.
That game had one SERIOUS flaw. It's anti-air. Whenever we played lan games it would always just resort to someone spamming a few thousand air units and completely ignoring the defences as they just dont do enough.

flak cannons, and wall of missile turrets with radar son.

have to have radar with missiles, or else you don't have the advantage (shooting far enough).

flak cannons are there to slam gunships which will hover.

a small cap patrol of 10-15 fighters will help as well.

Did OP just missed the point?
    We need writefags.

Writefags that despict how a single CORE UBER ALLES commander took over the Warhammer Universe.

    >>13997401
Yeah, done that. hell i think the last game i played (The one that made me say "No, fuck this shit.") was something like a 9 row thick layer of flak (Space enough for a lvl 2 gen between them so aoe didnt do shit.) with radar covering the entire map, and generally enough defences that you'd think i could go to sleep and come back tommoro and still be fine.

My mate who i played with regularly got about 400 lvl 2 ships and then about another 500 lvl 1 bombers and just flew right through it. picked off my commander and all of my gen's and i just called it quits. my aa took down a total of about 50 units before my entire base was fucked and as far as i'm concerned, THAT'S A BIT OF A PROBLEM CONSIDERING IT TOOK AN HOUR TO FUCKING BUILD AND 4 SECONDS TO RENDER USELESS.

Oh i was, it was a 9 player game though and earlyer on i'd been getting picked on by prettymuch everyone (Me and the guy who fucked me up are the best rts players in our group. though they always pick on me early on and leave him alone.)

So i was at a dissadvantage from early on. To the point that i only survived because as i was about to get finished another guy decided that it'd be a smart idea to pick two seperate fights and got face raped in the process. As a response i rushed up some defences and as much of a force as i could, Then lost the entire force defending the next wave when they'd finished them. The defenses though stayed, And it was a constant position of defence wasting my units just to not get over-run early.

Make no mistake, i'm not one of the ones that sits in a corner the entire game building walls of guns, but it was my only option after the start i had. (The first 40 minutes of the game or so was just people skirmishing in between fucking me over since they were 5x stronger than i was by that point.)

And for the record i was building an army, i had a few experimental units built and a heap more in production, since it had basicly reached the point where everyone was sitting on more res's than they could hope.

well, you can't really fault a game for what players are doing. I mean, any game that will let you win a scenario where you are constantly attacked by multiple players from the very start isn't gonna be much of a game, y'know?

All you can really do is play politics and alliances in the scenario you described. If you can't do that, play with less people I guess.

Supreme Commander? Depends. Could be a Galactic Colossus, which is a massive alien-tech-infused Titan.with physics-defying weaponry.

Alternately, it could be a Monkeylord; still pretty dangerous even though it is less physically imposing, the real strength of the Monkeylord is its stealth systems. Invisible to radar, amphibious and submersible, and equipped with huge microwave laser.

On the scale of danger confined to a single planet though, it could be a Mavor.
The Mavor is an experimental super-artillery piece; it has unlimited range and it fires mini-nukes.

And as to the questions - while experimentals are dangerous, a single t1 engineer would obviously be far more dangerous.

    TO ELABORATE:

Supreme Commander is set in a gloriously grim future where three factions have been at constant war for over a thousand years; the fascist United Earth Federation, the fanatical zealots of the Aeon Illuminate, and the isolationist half-AI Cybran Nation.

Supreme Commander's storyline is a race against time to determine control of the planet-busting superweapon and end the Infinite War. It is surprisingly well written AND voice acted, and full of passionately delivered lines like "After today.. All Cybrans will be free!" or "You're nothing but a goddamned TERRORIST!"

Supreme Commander 2.. Isn't. It's just fucking terrible. IT IS JUST FUCKING TERRIBLE. OKAY?
THE ONLY CYBRAN YOU SEE FOR THE FIRST TWO THIRDS OF THE GAME IS A SCREAMINGLY CAMP GAY MAN WITH A FUCKING JAR ON HIS HEAD YOU CAN SEE HIS BRAIN THROUGH.

HE'S GOT A JAR ON HIS HEAD YOU CAN SEE HIS BRAIN THROUGH!

    WHY?!

After your betrayal, we fled Earth, leaving our ancient homeworld in your hands.. But you followed. We threw ourselves upon the mercy of the stars, clinging to life in the most inhospitable of places. You chased us, bombed our settlements, reprogrammed our people and took them as your slaves.

For centuries, you have hounded us. Enslaved us. Murdered us. You think of us as nothing but machines. Tools. But we watched you, as you razed our worlds one by one by one.. And we learned. Oh, how we learned.
All we sought was freedom; the right to exist. You showed us the very lowest depths of hate.. And now you have the gall to wonder why we hate you in return.

We will shatter your skies as you shattered ours. We will march through the ruins of your homes, as you marched through ours. Your worlds will burn, and there will be no mercy! No forgiveness! No rest until the Nation stands free, as it was always intended to be!

We are done running! Stand, tyrants, and face the judgment of a thousand years of terror!

Both the Cybran and the Aeon campaigns also focus around Black Sun. They just use it for their own purposes rather than its original intended SHOOT CANNON, EXPLODE PLANET design.

The Cybrans reprogram it to fire a data stream into the quantum gate network and overload it, flooding every inhabited planet with the Liberation Virus before also detonating every quantum gate.

The Aeon use it to spread 'The Way' to everyone by allowing the Princess to speak into it using Kooky Space Magic. It doesn't have to make sense, its the Aeon, thats the whole fucking point of the Aeon; the laws of physics are WRONG.

Because it was a tribute to Brackman, you see. It was a tribute to one of the most brilliant geniuses of all time to make something ABSOLUTELY FUCKING RETARDED and then say "But its in the shape of a brain! You're a brain! You must love brains!"

This game is alright, though I do have issues. The base story was alright but its narrative format wasn't. There was absolutely no reason to care for one side more than the other, and they tried to paint the Core as evil, but when both sides goals is genocide, neither can be truly evil. The gameplay was fine and the explosions are nice, but the unit pathfinding could go fuck itself. Soundtrack was nice, and thats more than I can say for starcraft.

    > There was absolutely no reason to care for one side more than the other, and they tried to paint the Core as evil, but when both sides goals is genocide, neither can be truly evil.

That really hammered home the nihilism and futility of the setting.

The Core wanted everyone to live forever in AI form, a collective consciousness of free exchange and innovation, a Singularity that would make the Golden Age already enjoyed seem painful and primitive.

The Arm held still to the value of flesh, to physical existence with all the pleasures and risks that come with it. At the very least they wanted nothing more than the right to choose the terms of their own existence.

They could have gone their seperate ways, and both prospered fruitfully, resuming their friendship when both had matured. Instead we got a war that decimated a million worlds. All of the Core's lofty goals and idealism were subsumed in directing total unrelenting and merciless war. The Arm made a mockery of their original doctrine of holding the body sacred as they fought to keep the fight on even terms, first with clones, and soon with vat-grown brains and organ tubes entombed into metallic war machines no different than the Core's.

It's so hopless and terrible, the mind rebels from the sheer scale of war they've been fighting for thousands of years. And that's what makes it so very awesome.
    >> Anonymous 02/22/11(Tue)14:43 No.13998773
    >>13998749
And in the end, ultimately it was the Core's fault for trying to force the Singularity, and it was the Core's Contingency plan that would have actually done some good, by restoring the galaxy and undoing the damage.

I can't help but feel that the Core was the well intentioned extremist in this fight, and the manual states that it was trying to do the 'good' thing.

Well. Here's the thing. YOU wouldn't enjoy freedom from disease and immortality, a computer simulation of you would.

Many people don't feel like dieing just so that someone else can live forever, even if that person thinks just like they do and has the same memories.
    >> Anonymous 02/22/11(Tue)14:57 No.13998886
I have sympathy for The Arm, who simply did not wish to be taken from their flesh by force. I also sympathize with The Core, who didn't want it's citizens to suffer and die for the sake of immodest vanity. The mistake was in coming to blows, but we don't know who struck first. Certainly there is more blame to cast for each stage of the ensuing escalation, but War is rarely civil- especially Civil War- and so that hardly seems pertinacity. Thus, the true malefactor remains unknown, and both sides are forced to play the antagonist. To my mind, this is the very soul of tragedy: there is nothing left by destruction and despair.
    It's heartrending.
The explosions are fucking cool, though.

Most memorable mission for me was some Arm mission, couldn't have been very far into the game, where I had to fight my way past two hills. The core base was on the other side. For some reason it had fought me to a standstill. I fought that AI for HOURS trying gain a little territory, going so far as to build those dual plasma cannon turrets as sort of bunkers for my forces to retreat behind after each advance.

There were hundreds, thousands of dead hulks blocking the terrain between the two battle lines. I just remember spending hours and hours on that one mission, endlessly sending troops into the meatgrinder while trying to build up more troops to try to attack from a different front.

But wow, did it feel like victory when I smashed that core commander.

Next mission took me 15 minutes or so. Fought on a beach against some enemy boats. So anti-climactic.

I was the only one playing Seraphim. EX-Bombers are go!

In the same vein, I played another game where I won using the Seraphim Experimental Nuclear Silo to flat out overwhelm everyone else's nuke defense. The Experimental nukes take half the time and 1/4 the resources to build as a nuke defense missile, and 1/10 the time of an regular nuke. It also takes two defense missiles to take down one EX-Nuke.

My trollface when I finished that silo was almost as huge as my trollface as each of my opponents realized, in turn, that they didn't have the resources to commit to holding the defense against the nukes AND repair the damage that conventional forces were doing.

So which faction is it? The Core might do it as they would see the Necrons as failed patternings, The Arm would see the Necrons as wannabe Core.

The UEF was at the start of the original game in a rather precarious position themselves an might be more cautious but eager for expansion, the Aeon would probably go holy war when the Necrons did not respond to their sermons.

The Cybrans might be the only one faction that would prefer a low profile for a while.

my biggest problem with SupCom1 was the memory bug with AI pathfinding

after 15 minutes - the game would grind to a halt as the game slowed down to accomodate the hundreds of AI controled units (when playing skirmish or campaign)

    ruined the game

still loved it of course - but it was a difficult love

I'd imagine it would be the Core, unless the Imperium made the mistake of attacking an Arm planet to try and capture an STC.

Looking at how Necron-tech Gauss flayers work, there's a strange parallel to the reclamation nanolathes on basic builder units. Both strip targets down to their constituent atoms to be harvested, but the former is apparently the pinnacle of weapons technology in the 41st millennium, while the latter is just a mundane industrial process like recycling.

If you have an extremely porcy (lots of defense) enemy with a fighter wall, the only counter is counter-spam. So think of 400 units that are just fighters patrolling in a designated area and then one of them attacks. Addionally you send bombers to get rid of said porc.

Spring air battles are fucking awesome to watch though.

when i was just eating shit vs the ai on 7 islands, i used to build so many berthas that when set to fire at will, enemy jets would get detected so far out by my radar systems, that the enemy jets would literally get shredded by the berthas.

The berthas all sort of slowly swiveled into place, then collectively unleashed this massive roar as 100+ of them just kept firing. (my base was mostly berthas and fusion reactors) normally you'd never hit a jet with an artillery shell, but thanks to TA's physics engine. Those shells were physically traveling through the sky, the same sky the jets were flying through. It was swatting the entire formations of fighters and bombers into nothing, purely by volume of fire.

Urgh. Reminds me of the time I lost a game of SupCom on Seton's Clutch thanks to the projectile physics. I had a nice shielded firebase in the middle with lots of artillery and a Czar on station to lazer any approaching experimentals.

Then they built a T3 arty in range. Whilst shelling the base, it hit the Czar above, causing it to crash-land and wipe most of the defences and certainly all the shields, and horribly wound my commander there.

Didn't last much longer after that.

Played a game of this versus my friend once. We'd all been obsessively playing TA for years, and we'd done some light LAN games before. They were all big multiplayer games and not really serious, but it had become obvious that he and I were the two best players.

So, one day, we all go to this dude's house with our computers and hook them up, and he and I have a TA duel, with nukes turned off. It was on that one Core Prime map with the four rectangular islands.

He sent an initial wave of bombers and stuff, I shot them down. I established a secondary base on another island, he blew that up. I sent a fleet to attack his base, he blew them up. He sent a steady stream of hundreds of fighters and bombers at me, impaling them on my AA, and I blew them all up and then sent a suicide squad to take out the construction units he was using to assist the factories. I sent a bunch of aquatic tanks at the same time as I brought a Big Bertha up near his base and another fleet of ships arrived... and they caught his Commander outside the base and managed to kill him before he could run away.

The entire thing took SEVEN FUCKING HOURS, but goddamn, was the back and forth fighting epic.

I had the Alpha AI, which was an AI modded to be *hard*. It was still pretty dumb tactically, but it was given scarier build orders, had nukes it knew how to use, and could make AI-only resource buildings that were about 20x as effecient. One of my favorite things to do was to set up a base to be as impregnable as I could make it, then let the game run overnight and see if the AI could take it out.

Smoke rose from the craters across the battlefield. What had once been a lush forest was now a brown barren wasteland smeared by the twisted grey wreckage of two armies numbering in the thousands on each side, machines slaved to their respective masters. It was a painting of devastation, painted by two angry hands, each belonging to a separate artist whose very rage guided their brush strokes.

Only several hundred meters separated the two commanders, the colours that discerned them from one another now blackened by weapons fire from guns that were now silent. They stared at one another across the abyss they had created. Seconds were spent to calculate their next set of actions, and as one, they turned to begin their dance anew.

The blocky body of the ARM commander stepped on and over the piles of scrap at his feet, ignoring the squealing husks to allow the squadron of airborn engineers which were en-route to this position to begin their harvest. He had a base to rebuild.

Energy weapons bounced off his armoured hull. He turned in time to see a wing of CORE fighters turning to make another pass. They exploded soon afterwards as guided missiles under a cloaking field crashed into their engines. The air high above shimmered briefly as the wing of Hawk stealth fighters returned to their standard guard pattern.

A team of swatters were arranged to be relocated to this position to provide air cover as the commander went to work rebuilding. The dark red blip on his internal radar systems indicated that the CORE commander had disappeared to do the same. Neither could get close enough to the other, each was too well defended.

Wreckage was cleared, it was only about a hundred meters by a hundred, but it was enough to get started. The metal reserves were being filled as the airborn engineers went about their work, but they would soon fall under attack. Defenses were needed and the swatters were inbound but still required several minutes before they would be dropped off by the fleet of Atlases.

The nanolath tool was extended, as was the arm it was attached to. In a minute, the ARM commander had a more powerful radar system brought online as well as a vehicle factory which immediately began producing Samsons, the first one which emerged gleamed smartly in the sunlight, its blue markings seemed to glow.

Its turret immediately turned and opened fire on a passing Fink, but the small scout was too quick for the missile that tracked it.

By now, the Atlases had deposited their swatters, which took up positions on the cardinal points of the cleared area. The Samsons were moved along side so any ground assaults could be tied up while more advanced weapons were brought forward.

A Kbot factory was up, and after three construction bots were produced and sent out to begin erecting defenses, squads of iconic Flash kbots were queued up. The commander took a moment to assist in building the first ten, then sent them into the wasteland he had left behind to the south.

A fourth construction Kbot was ordered to build a tier two Kbot factory. The Commander desired Mavericks.

Trying to think of a decent writefaggotry with 40k/TA that doesn't end in a one-sided face stomp by the unstoppable von Neumann juggernaut is kind of difficult.

Hmmm. Core strike force (so 5 Assault Kbots, the Commander, and a Pyro bodyguard) makes landfall on a Daemon World? Might be interesting to see if the legions of Chaos can stop the Core Commander before the warp is reclaimed into Intimidator shells.

The Commander stood astride the malign earth, deaf to howling screams of tortured souls that drifted across the shattered horizon. He - or perhaps more accurately, it - cast a baleful gaze over the Daemon World's cracked soils, dyed crimson over aeons of warfare in the name of Khorne the Blood God.

The sheer magnitude of Warp-presence severed the connection between Core Prime and this particular Commander when it emerged from the Galactic Gate. The immortal consciousness that drove the titanic KBOT's memcomposite actuators remained however, and it recalled its final directive prior to loss of contact: the conversion of this energy-rich planetoid to more productive purposes. The harvest from this operation would fuel the final assault into what the primitive fleshlings called Segmentum Solar.

Where mortal eyes beheld an endless nightmare of ash and terror, a world where Bloodthirsters drank deeply from geysers of molten hatred that rose in great pillars from the cursed earth, the cold calculations of the Commander's processing network saw only... opportunity.

He raised his nanolathe into the grim sky, and began the reclamation of Agares III as uncountable swarms of invisible machines tore apart the Warp itself.

    (Worth continuing, or no?)

"KHORNE CARES NOT FROM WHENCE THE BLOOD FLOWS," roared a Berserker as his chainaxe found purchase in the neck of an unfortunate cultist in his warband, "ONLY THAT IT FLOWS!" With a wild rictus across his scarred face and glowing with impossible joy, the hulking super-human lifted the grisly trophy to the insane acclamation of his murderous colleagues. Ignaeus relished the favor of his dark patron for this act of violence, and reveled in the sanguine adrenaline that flowed through his veins. Khorne gifted the traitor marine much in the millenia since the Heresy; the greatest of these was passage to the bloody paradise of Agares III. Here, in the boiling seas of manifest rage, he could almost slake his thirst for murder and carnage. Almost.

The Warp surged and shrieked at this site of gruesome slaughter - and this attracted the attentions of the Core Commander's sensor nanites.

In the moment of his petty triumph a strange and sinister light engulfed Ignaeus's host of deranged savages. For a microsecond the Chaos warband thought it a sign of Khorne's blessing as their leader followed the example of glorious Kharn - this mistake was realized as soon as the nanites that were suspended in the lathe-field began the reclamation. The warband, some five hundred strong, collapsed onto the desecrated ground in unbearable agony as the silent machines carted away individual molecules of bio-matter, tearing away skin and flesh and exposing raw nerves to the roiling winds. Eyes were liquefied in their sockets, bones crumbled to dust, till nothing at all remained of Ignaeus's warband.

The Commander noted with what passed for approval as his energy gauges filled for a brief moment - enough to sustain his cloaking field until the first automated collection structures could be established.

Don't tell me you forgot about the fucking THERIANS /tg/

Therians is basically what would happen if [CORE had won/ARM never happened] and then got bored out of their collective virtual asses.

This song IS Total Annihilation. It's a musical summary of everything that takes this game beyond "innovative" and into "Legendary".

I loved the mission where I first got cannons. Had to defend a fort from a zombie horde. It was fun just mowing the vast hordes down.
