    523 KB Lunar Reckoning 69 Anonymous 03/06/11(Sun)21:17 No.14154062
Hey, /tg/, I got some homebrew for you...

If you missed it before (and pretty much everyone did), Lunar Reckoning 69 is a mecha roleplaying game heavily inspired by Armored Core and Madox 01, along with a bit of old sci-fi novel flavor and a system that uses Initiative as a resource. It was created due to my dissatisfaction with systems such as Mekton, combined with a loss of the work I did for BESM.

This release is the second public Beta, which comes along with the release of a discussion board for the game, the address for which is in the archive. It includes new stats, stories, and balance tweaks from the last time.

Well, I can do a crunch post right now, and a fluff post afterward.

The main system mechanic is based on opposed 3d6 attack and evasion rolls, and damage is based on the margin of success (or failure). Some weapons, like machineguns, have a very wide range, and others, like a sniper rifle, have a very narrow one.

Initiative is a resource. Initiative values are always increasing, redetermining the battle order. A high Initiative is required for some attacks, useful for others. Melee attacks consume Initiative. A high Initiative also protects you from guided missiles. Speed is life!

Character building is a sort of point buy/part selection hybrid. You select your parts, gain special traits and skills that can be used during battle, as well as points to increase stats. Advancement is through a mechanic called 'Legend Dice' and through cash payments during mercenary missions.

    >>14164869
As for the fluff...it is year 69 of the Lunar Reckoning, as many years after a war that killed billions. Today, humanity on Earth lives in self-sufficient Megacities. Though peace reigns, there is always instability...

And always room for mercenaries. You are a Magus, an elite pilot who uses a customized Armored Personnel Unit, with the power to turn the tide of battle. Who do you fight for? What kind of world are you trying to create? And who do you oppose?

Load your weapons, tweak your APU, and prepare for battle! Create the future!

Yeah, but that can be worked out. The biggest issues I've found with the system is
    1) Armor is next to worthless due to ping-spam and piercing. Adjust these with house-rules, and armor becomes worth taking. Best I've found is to change Piercing to reduce Soak by user's Strength value (some ranged or spells may need a bit of tweaking, but this isn't common). And to divide hardness ratings by 3, rounding up, and reduce Ping damage by this modified hardness value (to a minimum of 1 die).

And 2), the rush for Perfect Defense, and nothing but. Let's face it, there gets to be a point where the only thing anyone uses is Perfect Defenses until the opponent is out of Motes... then it's killing-blow. This one's trickier to house-rule. But I found that fixing armor, tends to lessen the amount of Perfect Defense spam you see.

A little. It's more along the lines of an Armored Core/VOTOMS cross, although Madox 01 is the closest thing I've discovered to it.

Front Mission is also kinda close, I suppose, though it's still on a scale close to that picture. Pic related.

Not that I don't like these Shirow designs. Maybe the KN Model powered armors look kinda like that...

That's the range used when your opponent is Defending or has a Passive Melee Defense. Basically, you deal no damage if your attack doesn't surpass their Defense or PMD, making a high Melee Attack important in those situations, making Defense useful to those who don't want to concentrate on melee attacks.

Lemme break it down for you.

Base Damage is how much damage you deal when the difference between your Attack roll and their Melee Defense (either roll or Passive) is 0. When the difference is positive, you add Damage Steps (in this case, 2d6+6 each) up to your maximum Damage Range. So, if you roll a 18 for Attack and they roll a 16 for Defense, then you deal 2 damage steps worth of damage, or 4d6+12 damage.

    >> Anonymous 03/08/11(Tue)05:38 No.14170114
    >>14170101
    Close.

The Defense stats are used when you're attacking someone who is Defending. The Counter stats, on the other hand, are used when you're attacking someone who is Countering, or when you are Countering yourself. This, and the damage step explanation, should help you out.

Also: I should be asleep, yes. For whatever reason, I am not.

So, basically, are melee attack damages against a defending enemy capped at all, in terms of steps? I see step ratings for counters only for melee weapons.

    >> Anonymous 03/08/11(Tue)06:30 No.14170265
    >>14170159
They are capped! In the pic you link, the HFB is capped to 6 damage steps while the enemy is defending, so it can deal a maximum of 12d6+72 damage.

That's what the 0/+6 means - you get no damage steps in the negative direction and up to 6 in the positive direction, based on the difference between your Melee Attack and their Melee Defense. If the difference were somehow 7 or more, you'd still deal only 12d6+72 damage.

If you still need more, I'll try to walk you through it completely.

Right. I... I think I get it now.

So a High Output Projector's maximum on a melee attack would be, uh... 24d6? Hmm. About that "Armor Damage x1" on the same weapon, am I correct in assuming that it still needs to defeat the laminate armor score before getting into the actual armor?

No, it always deals armor damage equal to its laminate damage. And when laminate is gone, it deals both the laminate damage it would deal to armor, and the armor damage it already deals.

So it's really really good is the idea. The EN cost is killer, though.

Also, 4chan keeps claiming my smutty Shirow illustrations contain malicious code. The horror!

If you want to start from the complete beginning of your career, $300,000, Pilot Traits, and 10 SP.
If you want to make a full-power mech, just choose parts without regard to cost and add 20 MP, Pilot Traits, and 10 SP.

http://www.island3.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5 has a part value calculator, and I'd really appreciate it if you posted whatever character you made in the Magus Record forum when you're done.

Sure thing, boss. Hmm, I like playing my characters from the scratch, so I think I'll go with the starter set...

    Also, chickenwalker remotely related.

Ok. 300,000$ sharp, zero Magus Points, 10 skill points. Should be pretty much in synch. Although I haven't the foggiest of whether this character's any good, though. Ah, well.

Honestly, it depends on the encounter. Your guy seems good if you're up against low level enemies like Sportswalker and the like. But against a tank...yeah he'd be dead.

Ah, that much I'd expect, since it's a starter level APU character. It's mostly geared for fighting other APU's, as such.

Should be fine then man. I would recommend getting No Defense so you can roll max Damage Step against APUs and other things that can't counter.

It's an intriguing trick I never would've thought to use, using dual casting rods as both your ranged and melee weapons to save money. But I can't deny it works. Kudos to you for this design - looks very solid!

The rods also fit the energy and weight profiles pretty neatly. The unit has plenty of room to improve with money though, especially with heavier, more expensive parts that could be used to boost the all-important Melee Defense which is woefully low on the thing.

Also, seems someone posted another profile on the 'site too. Cool, we might have a second playing group together soon.

The proportions on that mech are confusing me.

Is there supposed to be a pilot in there, or is it a robot?

Usually when I see a design like that, its based around something at least 40 feet tall.

Since that's Appleseed work, I'm gonna go and say that's a robot. Hell, pretty sure that robot is that girl's boyfriend.

You're being confused about the wrong detail.

The right thing to wonder about concerning the image is "where's Waldo?"

Don't see many non-human looking cyborgs in anime these days. Maybe I should check out Apple Seed.

You certainly should. It's not the most depthful work of Sci Fi in the world, but you'll have a fun afternoon with it.

It's a four book series, well worth reading. It's the story of a group of cyborgs, bioroids, and humans who get caught up in a power struggle between a city-state designed to be a utopia, and the rest of the world in a setting that is a few years after a limited nuclear and chemical exchange between the world's superpowers.

It remains unfinished. Masamune Shirow has been afraid to pick it back up and risk fucking up the ending because it's so good so far. I'm afraid he'll need a Stephen King Truck Event to spur him to tackle it.

Rated against other sci fic works it's a middling sci fic setting, but a masterfully presented political story.

I should have posted a smaller resolution picture. Grumble.

Also, Appleseed readable online at http://www.mangavolume.com/appleseed/chapter-appleseed-1/

I wonder how sites like that stay afloat though, ripping Dark Horse et Co. as blatantly as they do.
