    >It is the 302nd year After Unification.
    >It is summer.

Seated on your throne, you realize sometimes even undead lords need to ease their burden. The weather grows hot, but it pales in comparison to the clambering, oppressive warmth of the battlefield. You spend most of the time on the way back attending to the injured, and they are gladdened for it.

    >You have saved one unit of standing troops from death.

Your inner court stands ready to report, and you look first to the Black Thane, but not before taking stock of your own capabilities.

    >You may now leave your throne room during a season, but all reports and orders will take place there.
    >You are the equivalent of one unit of standing troops.
    >You may save one unit of troops a season from death.
    >You may heal two Injuries a season.

The Black Thane's armor is sundered by the flagpole you watched impale him on the ramparts of Zlatan castle, and he is wholly missing a rib, but he seems fine (at least structurally). Still, his posture sags, and his voice is weaker in your mind. You feel his waning power in your heart of hearts, and it saddens you.

    >The Black Thane is Injured, and his chance of success in all actions is lowered.

"Our endeavor to stop Zlatan's hex from being set loose upon fair Tautila was a success, my liege. Our escorts and smugglers were, unfortunately, a part of the price we paid."

    >The Black Thane may instruct you in the art of the sword.
    >The Black Thane cannot be Jailed.

    >The Captain has become more loyal.

He gathers his composure before continuing. "As for our situation, circumstances have fallen in our favor. The arms we bought served us well in battle. We have given only few men in the meeting of swords, and we are bolstered to our initial numbers by the Gailavira. In addition, the troops from their land and the other Dukes secure our borders still out of good will."

Our evidence has been spread across the kingdom, and aside from the expected abstains from the duchies most removed from ours -- to be expected, and a course of action I would advise you to take if strangers warred as well -- the rest of the kingdom shows no opposition if we were to invade Zlatan for rightful recompense.

    >Tautila may rightfully invade Zlatan.
    >Zlatan wants your land.

"Financially, Gailavira has withdrawn their financial offer. I would not take this as a slight, however. It is to be expected they would prepare their own troops, as it is know they are our allies."

    >Gailavira is allied with you.

"As for Hildefons, I would not depend on them too much. They look favorably on us because of our time of plenty for the peopl, but ... who knows."

    >Tautila generated no Unrest from war.

"... and the land is still bustling with trade and travel as opposed to the desolate expanse it was before your rule. Frankly, I ... I am speechless as you how I would dare improve it. Certainly, each one area could be improved, but no one issue over the others draws my attentions."

I think we should get the necromancer healing the Black Thane. With the damage we've done to our neighbour, it might be a decent idea to try to get some kind of peace with them since the oracle said a long war would not be favourable and taking land in our current state would take awhile I imagine.
    >> Anonymous 04/03/11(Sun)21:57 No.14465305
Actually, do we have any idea on how large their armies are? If they still outnumber us, than it's not likely we're going to get peace, even with the injury their queen got.

    >You decide the Necromancer will focus on healing the Black Thane.

The Necromancer glances over to the skeletal warrior standing at your left. "Hrm. This will not be a simple task. Constructs of your guardian's nature are designed more for their obstinacy than for a predilection toward a fast recovery."

He puzzles over the blood-stained tome under his arm, idly flipping through several pages. The writing seems to undulate and resist your attempts to read it. Magical warding, perhaps. "Still, I will do as you say, my lord," the sullen youth adds with a sense of finality.

The Black Thane and the Necromancer leave the throne room for the latter's laboratory, though the former seems as reluctant to do so as it always does.

    >The Captain's child will be born at the beginning of winter.

"Oh, ah, yes, my lord. The troops of the enemy. As our intrepid fellows were working to maximize their stealth, they were unable to survey the interior of Zlatan as they traveled. All we know is what enemies are at the border as told by our allies. Though we felled many in the last season, it seems they have recovered the number of their sentries, at least to some extent."

    >Zlatan has one known unit of elite troops.
    >> Anonymous 04/03/11(Sun)22:16 No.14465503
Hmmm. Wonder where other people are.

4 units guarding their border and we in theory have 6 defending ours. Perhaps we should take the captain with us and push into their borders with some sorcery support from our wizard. Best chance to do it since he's less likely to go insane.

I hope someone else comments on this since I don't want to be the only one deciding things.
    >> Anonymous 04/03/11(Sun)22:20 No.14465544
Oh right. We have money. Perhaps see if we can hire some mercenaries to assist?

Steward can work on increasing the trade network in our lands I suppose with money assistance while the dictator can work on getting us some spies using money or see if he can bribe any mercs working for Zlatan to work for us or leave their current employer.

I don't know. Someone else suggest better ideas.

    Questions from prior thread:
    - Size of Zlatan army that ran out from us from the battle
    - Our true total of army (start with 4 standing, 2 elite, lose 2 standing, get 1 standing, save 1 standing = ???)

    - Train Captain in swordsmanship
    - Captain to recruit troops (or Lawmen, depending on the tally of our current army and Zlatan's); Funding
    - Getting an apprentice for Wizard for upkeep, and perhaps a permanent courtesan or two assigned to the Wizard; Wizard to do these on his own
    - Thane to train a standing troop to be elite (and merciless)
    - Necro to repair Thane
    - Steward to boost market infrastructure or organization; Fund it
    - Dictator to send demands to Zlatan, or to get trade relations with Hildefons and Gailavira; Fund it

    - NAMES! I get a bit flustered when writing our Wizard, and then Zlatan Wizard...

We still have three large purchases to make right?

    1. Siege Weaponry - both the purchase and development of them. They don't seem to be in use and hiring some smiths and engineers to get going on that would give us an edge in further conflicts

    2. Wizards! - If there is Wizard tower within our lands then we could start buddying up to them. If not let's build one and attract some with a combination of bribes, better living conditions, bribes, a place at our court, and bribes. Make sure to tell the court Wizard that he gets to be Archmage of the tower (or whatever), build him the fanciest room right at the top to keep him happy.

    3. How are our roads and infrastructure doing? Anybody in need of aqueducts or the like?

Your court steps closer to address the bountiful list of ideas you remunerated upon.

    >Zlatan army size.
The Captain clears his throat. "They were less than our number, lord, deficient by a single unit in both qualities of troops, but they have dedicated much to mobility and were able to not only meet that discrepancy, but double it. In further detail ..."

    Was me.

Also, Dictator could also be sent to Zlatan to demand reparations:
    - For sending in a unit of mercenary bandits
    - For their espionage action
    - For their Wizard's sorcerous attempt on Tautila's duchy
    - For provocation attempt (untrained troop's sortie into our border)
    - For the loss/injuries of our two standing troops when Zlatan invades our border

That tallies into the worth of 6 major purchases, OR 4 major purchases and one of the Duchess' child inducted into our court as an ambassador of goodwill (read: hostage).

Remind the Dictator he might still get jailed for this, but also tell him that such an action would send Hildefons and Gailavira into becoming full allies of invading Zlatan.

    . . . At least I think so. Opinions?

Captain: Recruit more units to replenish our ranks

    >Currying favor with the Wizard's tower

The Wizard scowls, crossing his arms as a chill settles over the room for a few moments. The corner of his mustache twitches. "Milord, if you have no respect for my talents, I will gladly relieve you of their burden. There are barely enough men alive with my power to fill a wagon, and if you'd rather take up with those most aptly describe as my -rivals- in the search for scholarly omnipotence, then seek -them out."

Static leaps along the metal trimmings of your throne, the iron of the chandeliers. "And if you'd feel more secure with a bastion of mewling sycophants and bumbling apprentices who can barely muster the force of will to manifest enough of the Grand Forces to boil water, let alone cast the stars from the sky and blacken a man's flesh with a wave, then you are clearly overindulged with the availability of my talents."

"Swaddle me in whores and praise all you like, but I did not come from the tower to your court to sell you a franchise, I came to be your Wizard."

    >You may hire magical assistance from the towers.

    Uh? Clarify that?
Initial Zlatan border army: 4S 1E
    Attacking Zlatan army: 6S 2E
    Killed Zlatan army: 2S
    Fleeing Zlatan army: 4S 2E
Current KNOWN Zlatan border army: 3S 1E

    Are these what you meant?
    How about our army's tally?

Also, in the prior thread, we had a discussion among us players that Zlatan might still be able to induct mercenary units when pressed. That had to be taken into account, even if we decide not to invade back, since Zlatan might decide to bring those mercs into our borders along with their own troops in a big push later on.

My impression was that we had 4/2, then lost 2 standing troops in the war, but healed one. Why are we not now at 3/2?

I think we need to aggressively pursue the war here. The Oracle told us that a lengthy war will go against us- so we should attempt to smash Zlatan as rapidly as possible, calling upon our allies for support, dedicating our wizard to blast enemy troops or slow down their troop movements with the weather, having our Steward dedicate her efforts to raising patriotism and thereby encouraging people to enlist, all that good stuff.

Oh, honestly! We wouldn't order the finest armorer in our kingdom to spend all his time making nails; we have common blacksmiths if not their apprentices for that. Our best armorer should spend his time forging works of art worthy of his talents. Likewise, there are a myriad of tasks which we might wish a wizard to undertake which would, frankly, be a total squandering of your considerable abilities. Why complain about the opportunity to foist off the boring jobs on someone else so that you can undertake more interesting and vital endeavors?
    >> Anonymous 04/03/11(Sun)22:44 No.14465744
Like the Weather! Yes that was a boring job now wasn't it. Just think, you won't have to do that ever again once some two bit conjurer is around to do it for you. And then you can get back to the fun things like Scrying on the island of scantily clad nymphs and building doomsday devices!
    >> Perverted White Knight 04/03/11(Sun)22:46 No.14465765
Apologize to the Wizard, not for the suggestions, for making him think that we severely underestimates his capabilities. But the search for apprentices are not to aid US, but to free the Wizard of time spent doing menial tasks, such as keeping upkeep or controlling weather for crops, giving him more time to do greater works, that would lend might to fair but ailing Tautila.

(Unless we are mistaken in what you meant by upkeep for the magic items... Did you mean Wizard has to spend a season not doing anything but cooped with a magic item, or do you mean spending a major purchase to pay for the upkeep?)

Regarding infrastructures (academic, economic, sanitation, utilities, etc.), I'd say those fall under the Steward's care. Some of the other Councilors might give aid unexpectedly (Necro's grave-clearing-fertility rituals come to mind), but I doubt all those can be done in a single season.

Choose what seems suitable for a duchy just finding its feet back into the game and start implementing it, keep the rest as a good idea to spring on the following seasons. We still have Zlatan to worry about.

-Wizard to spy over the Zlatan (focus on Tautila-Zlatan politics), Apprentice to maintain upkeep
-Dictator to raise Spies and send them to on Vesna, Double Fund it to lower chance of double-action failure and increased results.
-Captain to train up the Untrained Troops, and receive sword-tutoring from us.
-Thane to train a Standing Troop into an Elite Merciless Troop (or an Elite into an Elite Merciless, I am unsure).
    - Pity the Oracle, and send up some thoughts for her, she might catch it out of the aether or something
    - Necromancer... Can he Scry too? Else he to train us in experimenting with Life Magic.
    - Steward... Should we embargo the Zlatan? Or we could increase one of Tautila's infrastructure. Potential Fund.

Not the best possible outcome on the diplomacy, but if we could spin the release of the Oracle as benefiting the entire realm, it might buy us some credit with the whole area. That being said, this is a bad deal. Abstinence from sorcery would include our spells to improve our crops and the Wrath Circle. We can't have that. This whole thing has us over a barrel - it might be more useful just to try to attack or rescue her. But if we failed, we'd be lost. Even if we won, if we lost too many troops, we'd be lost anyway. This is a horrible situation to be in. It might be better just to consider the Oracle lost, and begin spinning it as the Zlatans unjustly holding a neutral personage from not only us but from all the world - maybe cause some more pressure from others towards them.

No, the abstinence from Sorcery is one of our conditions to them. We are saying they don't get to have a Wizard for two seasons. They agreed to that part. They are just trying to weasel out of paying us any money.

I say counter with 2 total purchases in reparations and tax exemption on Tautilan merchants who wish to sell their wares in Zlatan. Why conquer these snakes with force when we can undercut their prices and conquer them financially.

(I would assume there is some system of tariffs in place that by avoiding would give our goods an advantage in Zlatan markets)

"I have carried out your duties, my lord, to the letter. The lawmen have been replenished, and the states of our duchy's peasantry and nobility alike have been bolstered by works you have helped fund. Hamlets grow into villages, and our towns swell into cities."

The Necromancer rubs his chin. "Hrm. An interesting task, my lord. It is one I can perform, but it's a peculiar errand to be sent on. It will be no small thing to covertly spoil the resources of a duchy."

"You'll do fine," says the Steward, smiling at him. "Zlatan has greater things to worry about than two travelers visiting their villages. I hate to do such a thing, especially if people in Zlatan are truly in need, but it seems like a wise course of action, and perhaps a peaceful one, compared to what else is at our disposal. Work swiftly, and the time will fly, Necromancer," she says, touching his shoulder.

"Hm. Perhaps you're right." The Necromancer turns to you. "We'll be certain to pass along your compensation to the merchants who we will request to lower their prices in order to divert funds from Zlatan, my lord. Before we leave, that is."

    >You spend a major purchase on diverting profits from Zlatan.

"Which is now," the Steward says, calling for her horse. The Necromancer follows afterward, leaving you alone in the throne room.

But for now, I think it can go to the improvement of agricultural facilities/tools.

On a similar note, the two food reserves we have (taking into account cycling to prevent spoilage), is that for each harvest season, or is that a static stockpile?

    >It is the 303rd year After Unification.
    >It is spring.

Life returns to the kingdom once again, and flowers bloom. On trees, in the gardens of your castle, and in the hollow of your breasts. Inspired by the flight of fancy from the servant girl last year, you cultivate a small bushel of soft white roses within you, the pride of your garden, with a single red rose where your heart once beat its drum.

As your black cloak trails on the ground, you leave petals in your wake. Many of the servants are enamored, and the local populace to the castle greet you with a "good morning, my lord" rather than a deep and silent bow. You find yourself wishing you could inhale their perfume, but the desire passes when you remember you know of an essence deeper than the five mortal senses, as the bounteous energies cling to you like no mere aroma could.

The Captain's wife visits often, in an attempt to have the baby used to the place where his father will be spending so much time.

Occasionally the Black Thane will ride up in the night while the army sleeps, to see that you are well. Upon confirming such, he turns around and head right back to be ready before the sun rises. His dedication knows no bounds.

But the group is assembled, and they are ready for your orders. However, the gathering is slightly different today ...

Sounds like a purchase to train with the Troops. While it was mentioned that there is no particular use for Micro-management, I think roleplay-wise it is okay to spout off these kind of ideas.

Just make sure to add what kind of Macro action it is.

With that kind of report, we can put definite pressure upon the Zlatan. Put it forward on the negotiation table, and that now we demand 6 major purchases, 2 seasons of no sorcery (and no looking for Wizard), the release of Oracle, AND reparations to HER in form of the Duchess' children to act as the Oracle's attendants until she could manage to find her own.

Or else, we destroy Zlatan inside out, rout its army, ruin its economy, stain black its reputation, and swallow it lands whole...

The next person in the small gathering is a stranger to you. Where the Wizard would stand is a tall woman with tones tinging her skin that are usually found among those born on the southern coasts. Perhaps a bastard child of a noble, or the daughter of an elder line, as she carries herself with the same experience of authority that the other courtiers do. Long, dark hair and rather sparing robes of red clothe her.

"The Wizard slumbers still, good Duke," the woman says, a white mask of porcelain hovering over her face. "I am his apprentice, his lesser in the studies of the tower. He offered me the opportunity to expand my talents through service to a lord, and I am pleasantly surprised to see they will be tested indeed. Oh, and send out this proclamation:

The Oracle is indeed a neutral third party in all things. And in all things that she had done these past seasons, she chose to do it to the betterment of the Kingdom. That she offered a hand to aid the Duchy of Tautila when it had almost be lain upon a shallow grave, would not be forgotten by Tautila.

And in gratitude, despite knowing full well that her position required her to keep a neutral stance, the whole Kingdom should know that Tautila would always remain her staunch ally, till her dying day (and perhaps even then). She would always be received in favor in our court, and find allies among the populace.

And if harm should befall her...

    Beware Tautila's anger.

Black Thane, Wizard, Spies, and whatever aid from Gailavera and Hildefons can be garnered for the effort:

These guys will be breaking the Oracle out. Zlatan has no sorcery to meet our troops like last time. Gailavera is our close ally, they'll probably be willing to offer help. Hildefons is an incredibly altruistic nation, it seems, so the treatment of the Oracle will hopefully be enough to spurr them into giving aid.

We break out the Oracle, and then use her support to either strongarm Zlatan into whatever the fuck we want from them, or we lay siege to their duchy with whatever allies we can convince to join us.

I will have to make a point to come back and participate in the next part of the quest. This was a lot of fun, and I hope I helped.

    >You have no memory of anything before your emergence from a deep oblivion. You know only that you were once a mortal of the kingdom Heva, as you recognized both its name and customs, but all other knowledge was gifted to you by the Black Thane, who carries with him all the memory of his past life in service to Tautila.

Great quest and all, but you shouldn't have outright said that. Firstly, you've made guessing about our past much less interesting, and secondly, you've closed off a whole load of future twists that could have brought a whole new dimension to the game. The best way to run a quest is to never outright solve any mysteries without bringing up new questions, look at Ruby Quest.

The otherwise excellent Blood Quest suffered massively from this.

    >You were alive once.
    >You know about the kingdom.

Neither of these are particularly ruinous spoilers.

Really? We could have been anything. We could have been an otherworldly entity. We could have been some sort of supernatural power. We could be a deity (although to these people we are, I guess). It just closes off avenues, and I wanted to mention it before he starts explaining everything that goes on rather than leving it to the participants, as StonerDM ended up doing.

So just a thought I had when reading this on the archive (thank god this thread is still alive!) that I'd like to share. Mind you I haven't read this thread yet.

I want us to ask the Oracle about the past and the future that didn't come to pass. Mind you, I haven't read this thread yet so I don't know how much history of the world we know at this point. But it would be really good to learn about the country, former enemies and allies, forgotten grudges we could bring back to the surface to get some political advantage etc.
Even if we're not the king we are posing as it's very important that we know as much as possible about him. We are already using his status to play KING for crying out loud, there must be more ways we can take advantage of this guy.
On the future that didn't come to pass... I'm mainly interested in knowing if we've avoided disasters or made a bad call that hasn't been very obvious.

Food for thought. If you like it, suggest it in the next thread. Stupid timezones will probably not permit me to post when we are live.
