    57 KB Mutant Quest Professor X !Wz87.gYWh. 04/05/11(Tue)13:29 No.14484402
The year is 1995, and anti-mutant riots are sweeping the nation. Fearing what might happen to you if your true nature is discovered, your parents have enrolled you in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where you can learn to harness your amazing gifts, or at least be isolated from those who fear and hate you.

As you step out of the car and walk up the path to the Mansion, you are greeted by Ms. Grey and Mr. Summers, two teachers at the school. Mr. Summers is wearing an odd-looking pair of red sunglasses that hide his eyes. Sort of the same color as Ms. Grey's hair, as if you were in some world that only had one shade of red ink.

"Professor Xavier is eager to meet you," Ms. Grey tells you, "but first let's get your things put away."

Are they going to stick you in the boy's dorm or the girl's dorm? Roll a d100 to vote; highest of three wins.

Mr. Summers veers off somewhere, leaving you and Ms. Grey alone in the hallway as she leads you to the girl's dorm. As you pass one of the doors, you hear a strange electrical popping sound behind it. "Don't mind that, she's just practicing for some upcoming tests."

"Time control... wow, that's new." Ms. Grey seems to look at you a little differently now. "Well, this is the right place for you, then. It sounds like you could get into trouble with something like that. Reminds me of an old Twilight Zone episode..."

The two of you halt in front of a nondescript door in the hallway. "This is your room. You're lucky, a few years ago the students had to have roommates, but now that we've added on a wing there's plenty of room again." She opens the door, revealing a nondescript 12x12 room with a bed, a window, and a desk.

"Professor Xavier would like to meet you once you put your things away. Just come down to the first floor when you're ready."

Ms. Grey turns and walks back down the hall, leaving you alone in your room for only a moment before someone knocks on your (still open) door.

"Hello?" the Asian girl standing in the doorway asks you. "I'm Sam, what's your name?"

Sam looks disappointed, even though you say it in the nicest way possible. As she drifts (a few inches above the carpet) back down the hall in the other direction, you turn and head back the way that you and Ms. Grey came.

A few moments later, you're standing at the door of Professor Xavier's office. Just as you're about to knock, the door opens and a huge blue-furred monster peers at you from behind his spectacles!

"Oh my stars and garters, another new face around here! Come in, come in, the Professor's been waiting for you!"

As you walk in, you see Mr. Summers, Ms. Grey, and a bald man sitting behind a large desk. The blue monster introduces himself by taking your hand in his huge furred claw and shaking it gently. "I'm Professor McCoy. I'll be your life sciences and literature teacher. Have you ever read Goethe?"

"Hank, stop badgering her," Ms. Grey says to him.

"Hello, Aino," the bald man says, in a voice full of rich compassion and geniality. "Welcome to my school. I know you'll fit in."

"We have some business that just came up that needs attending to, so I apologize for having to make our first meeting so short. Classes are already finished for the day, so you have an hour of free time before dinner. If you need anything else before then, please ask one of the older students."

Professor Xavier pushes himself back from his desk, and you see that his lower half is encased in some kind of high-tech hoverchair!

From your view, you can see a couple of people playing Frisbee outside on the lawn. "If there's nothing else you needed, we really do need to leave," Mr. Summers says, a bit abruptly.

    What's the plan, big shot?

As you walk out the door and down the hall, you hear the Professor's voice in your head: <Be careful with your power, Aino. Time can be a dangerous thing to play with.>

As you step into the rec room, you see Sam and two other students, one boy with dark brown skin and shoulder-length black hair, and a blonde girl with a ponytail. Both seem to be wearing some sort of black and yellow spandex under their normal clothes.

The three seem to be playing an unbalanced game of foosball, but none of them look up, because they're still frozen in time!

    Oh?
Lets try to learn about our powers as much as possible. It seems Professor know something about it.
Could he give us a lecture on "what do and what not do"? Or anything general about time travel.

Aside from that, remember what we can do with our powers. What limits we have, how much can we safely use it, if we can go back in past or future, and how far, etc

[Also, OP, please don't use dice rolls to determine which actions will be taken. Try to use consensus and incorporate the ideas which you like. Dice roll, or "lottery system" as I like to call it, often doesn't work very well]

Indeed, she seems to be holding her own against the two on the other side of the table, until the playing surface glows with a bright flash of light and something rockets out the side of the foosball table, sending splinters flying!

"Hey, no powers!" Sam shouts. The black-haired boy shrugs defiantly. "This game is lame, anyway." He turns and looks you up and down.

"So what are you here for?"

"Ricardo, be nice," Sam says, poking him in the shoulder. "Aino just got here a few minutes ago. She hasn't had time to see what a jerk you are."

Sam puts on her jacket, and as she does so you can see part of her own black-and-yellow spandex peeking out under the bottom of her shirt.

"They gone yet?" she asks the blonde girl, who nods.

"They were headed east, but I can't tell where they are anymore," the ponytailed girl says.

"Clarissa's sort of like a mind-reader, but for machines," Sam tells you after the other two leave the room. "It comes in handy in situations like this. Well..." Sam says, still looking a bit dejected. "If you change your mind, we'll probably be at the mall. Just as Sam steps outside of the rec room you do your thing, slowing time to a standstill and hurrying across the (really quite large) Mansion, but unfortunately Professor Xavier is not in his office!

As you turn around, you see a Japanese woman with... purple hair... in the hallway. She notices you and waves. "The Professor and some of the others had to leave for a bit, dear," she says, surprising you with a posh British accent. "Is there something you needed?"

As you explain what you wanted, she nods and takes your hand. "I know just the place. Usually we don't let first-year students take part in training exercises of this caliber, but I feel that we must follow the times and make sure we are all prepared for the future. Come," she says, leading you through a hall you've not yet been in. The two of you quickly come to a metal door with a palm scanner next to it.

"I'm Ms. Braddock, by the way," she says, introducing herself. "I teach martial arts and world history, but I may be able to help you in some small manner with controlling your powers."

She lays a hand on the scanner and a moment later the door slides open, revealing a large, brightly lit room with a solid metal floor and walls. A single large window is set into one wall about twenty feet up.

"This is the Danger Room. Don't worry, it's not dangerous. At least not yet. Wait here, please," she says, prompting another palmscanner-locked door to open. A moment later she appears in the window above you. "All right, let's see what you can do."

A pair of floating golden metal spheres descend from the ceiling and zip toward you!

One squint later, the spheres slow to a stop, hanging in midair and allowing you to step behind them! Once you let go, they shoot forward, and one crashes into the wall in an explosion of sparks! The second loops back through the air, but once again you easily halt it and sidestep, sending it skidding across the metal floor as it tries to find you again! After another pass like this the remaining sphere floats back up into the ceiling, and Ms. Braddock leans forward, looking at you. It seems that she is not affected by your power!

"Impressive. Quite impressive. Chronological control... I hadn't realized the Danger Room was equipped to deal with such a thing, though as you can see its drones are not. We could do this all evening, but I think there might be better ways for you to practice with your talents."

"Are you hungry? I know it's almost time for dinner."

Would you like to spend some more time in the Danger Room or head out and get some food in you? And if you have anything you'd like to talk to someone about, you can do that without having to win a roll.

Now this is where it get's interesting.
If we would travel in slow motion we would be torn apart by friction from air alone (think of a meteorite) but the fact that we haven't burned into crisps means that we create some sort of a "time coccoon" over our bodies, making us travel in different timescale.
Hitting something with the power of hyper speed means that we would have to let go of this coccoon and make at least the tip of our fist go with "real" time while the rest of our body pushes it foward.
As I said before, this is impossible at the moment, but if we would get some sort of gauntlets, say, made of adamantinium, we could deliver massive hyperspeed blows without damaging ourselves.
All we would have to do is leave the gauntlets out of our little coccoon and then let it rip.

Manipulating stuff without destroying them also means that we expand the coccoon to cover said object/person.
In case of a person or an animal, it would become "active" in a way that it is in our timescale.
So if we would need to dismantle a bomb for example, we would have only few possibilites.
Carrying it away without destroying it is impossible of it's about to go off in "real" time.
Dismantling it would be possible in a way that we would expand our coccoon to cover areas that don't trigger the bomb such as covering a wire partially, making the electric signal move to the border of our coccoon but freezing where it exits our coccoon.

As Ms. Braddock leads you back out from the Danger Room through the labyrinthine corridors to the dining hall, she explains how the Danger Room works:

"Think of being in the room as if you're in your own little world. The things you do in it are blocked by the walls; otherwise a student might get into trouble and no one could help. This way those outside the room itself are not affected and can impartially observe. It's nothing to do with my own powers, which are admittedly quite slight."

"Using your powers outside of approved locales like the Danger Room is officially discouraged, though what one does in private is his or her own business." Ms. Braddock seems to notice something about the way you're dressed, because she exclaims "Oh, you're still in your street clothes! How silly of me to forget. Normally we don't give UMF suits to first-years, but we can probably make an exception for you. Normal fabrics are often unable to stand up to the kinds of situations your fellow classmates often find themselves in, so we outfit them with special clothing that allows the full use of their powers with no ill effects."

By the time she's finished explaining, the two of you enter the dining hall, where a brown-haired man is already sitting down. "Ah, chere," he says, looking at Ms. Braddock. "Was wonderin' when I'd see you 'gain. An' who's this?" he asks in a thick Cajun accent.

"Remy - Mr. LeBeau," she corrects herself. "This is Aino. She only just arrived at the school."

"Ah, très bien," he says. "Jus' in time, too. Got a good gumbo mixed up, real nice. Seems like we might be missing a few kids, though. You know anything about that, chere?" he asks you. You notice that his eyes are solid black with only red points of light inside them.

"Finland, huh?" Mr. LeBeau remarks. "Too cold for my taste. Mrs. LeBeau's lil' boy likes de sunshine." he says, grinning.

"Pay him no regard," Ms. Braddock mutters to you. "Mr. LeBeau often speaks without thinking." To this, Mr. LeBeau makes a mocking "you wound me" gesture.

"Wow, Finland," Luke says. "That's pretty cool. I'm from Ohio," he volunteers, "and Mary Ann is from Mozambique."

    "That's in Africa," he adds.

The gumbo is pretty delicious, it seems, although very spicy. Halfway through the meal someone else wanders in, a short but burly man with a profusion of hair, both on his head, where it forms an almost V-shape, and his muscular arms. "Thought I smelled gumbo," he says, dropping into a chair and proceeding to pile the thick rich food into an unused bowl. "You're the new girl, huh? Watch out for these two," he says, nodding at Luke and Mary Ann. "They get in all kinds of trouble."

"No we don-" the two start, again in unison, before they both stop in mid-exclamation and look to the right. "Something's coming."

Just like that, the three adults are on their feet! "You three stay here," Ms. Braddock says. "We'll be back in a moment."

She briskly walks out the doorway, following the other two, leaving you alone with the two students, both of whom look at you with somehow identical expressions on their faces.

    WAT DO?

Bursting out the front doors of the Mansion, you see Mr. LeBeau lying on the ground, obviously injured, while Mr. Braddock and the other man trade blows with a being in a black hood, laden down with a mish-mash of weaponry! Despite its seemingly encumbered state the mysterious figure ducks back and throws up a sparking metal pole, just in time to stop the metal claws coming from the hairy man's hand!

As you watch the slow-motion struggle, you notice that Mr. LeBeau has a blade of some kind stuck into his abdomen!

Time powers are great, but for next thread, remember that we are also a Finnish 15-yr old girl, in a combat situation, with our powers pushed to the max. The world at large is fearful and suspicious of mutants. We don't know how well our relationship is with our family regarding this. We are new in town, don't have our support network of friends and family, we are probably lonely or scared, and I wouldn't be suprised if we were taking some kind of emotional/mental damage, even if we were otherwise unscathed. And these hypervelocity attacks are cool, but are we prepared to murder strangers we've never met to save strangers we hardly know with powers we hardly understand?

Come on /tg/, let's characterize! (In the next thread, I mean)

Because what's better than a time-bending artillerist throwing hyperspeed projectiles whilst time-troll-dodging all incoming hostility? A time-bending artillerist throwing hyperspeed projectiles whilst mentally breaking down and being real.

Also, enemy psychics are going to chew us up. . . Invest in tin-foil hats.

the incomics version of professor X basically brain hardens everyone that goes to school there. and puts up hellacious mind firewalls against that sort of thing. the crazy bastards also has everyone goto sleep and wake up being able to speak like 9001 languages, or at least he did in the original clairemont run in the early 80`s. he did for Iliyana back in uncanny xmen around issue 140 something. he pulls a hogwarts on you so you can get into shape without having to study too much, so you can fight and die for his beloved dream. i have a link somewhere for a evil prof x fanfic that was scary good. where he ran shit like a cult, and magneto was a hero and hulk kills cable with a birdcage.

    All right, I'm back!

As I said, the faculty tend to take a dim view of firearms, and would do their best to dissuade you from using them, and in fact would not allow you to possess them. Note that I am not saying "you can't use guns", only that Xavier's School will not permit you to keep or use them. After all, there are groups (*cough* *X-Force* *cough*) that think guns are just great.

However, that's a matter for the future. Right now you're just a fish out of water.

So... any questions? Suggestions? Some things I might have to keep secret, but I'm open to discussion!

It's funny how marvel's online hero generator looks exactly like HeroMachine. There's no option for a body type other than "stacked" either.

Anyway, this is a rough approximation of what I imagine Aino looks like in comic form, or maybe what she will look like in a couple years. Drawfags are more than welcome to make a better version!
    >> Anonymous 04/05/11(Tue)21:40 No.14489136
OP, could you clarify exactly how our powers work?

At the moment, it seems like we forcibly slow down time, presumably in a bubble around ourselves? Meaning that there's what, a hundred feet around us where nothing is moving when viewed from the outside, except for us who is walking around normally? Is this a correct assessment?

Also, as we can see things normally, we are vulnerable to lasers from outside our bubble even while time is stopped. Which isn't so great in a comic world.

    Correct.

    >Also, as we can see things normally, we are vulnerable to lasers from outside our bubble even while time is stopped. Which isn't so great in a comic world.
    Probably also correct.

Unless you develop the ability to slow down light in a concentrated area to be able to stop a laser beam and still see what you're doing.

When it comes to laser weapons and such, we have to stay ahead of the targeting system. In other words, stop time before the shooter pulls the trigger, or before the Targeting Computer gets a lock.
    >> Anonymous 04/05/11(Tue)22:06 No.14489421
    >>14489333
But thus far our time control abilities are radial. If the shooter is a half-mile away, we simply can't stop him.

Of course, as we develop finer control, we'll probably be able to slow specific people, grow or shrink our radius, or learn how to speed ourselves up instead of slowing everything else down (which is really probably a very power-intensive way of accomplishing what we do).

Given that there was some kind of strange weapon involved and that we were apparently going unconscious at the time, I'm not willing to count on anything involved there- whatever the hell happened- as definite parts of our power set. If we encounter the same sort of phenomena another time I'll worry about puzzling it out.

Nah, that'd only be if she was an independent hero with a strong national identity (like Shamrock; pic related).

Unstable molecular fabric is expensive, so you'll get the same colors all the X-Men get. And now that I'm thinking about it, I said the other students' uniforms were black and yellow because I was thinking of the old New Mutants costumes instead of the blue and yellow of the adults. Do you still have that character up (or can recreate it) so I can see what the black and yellow version looks like?
