The year is 1995, and anti-mutant riots are sweeping the nation. Fearing what might happen to you if your true nature is discovered, your parents have enrolled you in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where you can learn to harness your amazing gifts, or at least be isolated from those who fear and hate you.

It's only been a week since you arrived at the Mansion, but what a week it's been! Attacked by a mutant-hunting vigilante your first night, finding yourself in the middle of a robbery over the weekend, helping a classmate with her math homework, and dealing with teenage jealousy over boys... and that's not even mentioning that your science teacher looks like a cross between Cookie Monster and a werewolf! It's hard enough being fifteen without superpowers, but at least you and Sam are still friends, despite the drama that erupted on Sunday when her crush accidentally touched you and took on your appearance!

Now it's Friday morning, and while you may have thought that the Danger Room was the most exciting prospect for your week the hallway of the girl's dorm is filled with excited peals and shrieks of laughter as the other students prepare for the class field trip... to Antarctica! Sam floats by your open doorway and pokes her head in, reminding you in her loud (but friendly) voice to be on time - a joke between the two of you ever since you came to the school to learn to control your strange power of temporal manipulation.

As she disappears down the hall, you take stock of the other students in the girls' wing and realize something - after a full week here there's still one student you haven't met, one door that you've never seen opened. You hadn't really thought about it until now, but the inhabitant of the room two doors down from you has (as far as you know) never been out of her room. In fact, you haven't heard anything about her since the day you arrived, when Ms. Grey casually answered your question about the electrical noises coming from the room as "just practicing her control".

Checking the time on your bedside alarm clock (the most accurate of the three clocks in your room, as the other two are used for practicing your power) you realize that you're supposed to be downstairs with the other students in five minutes. The black and yellow UMF suit you're wearing under your outfit (the same kind of suit that all your classmates wear, it seems) is like a second skin, and though you're originally from Finland and warm coats will be provided before you leave you still wonder if it will be enough.

    What do, mutie scum?

You pull on an extra pair of socks, and cushioned by the double layer and the thick carpet of the Mansion's hallway you bound down two doors, curiosity once again getting the better of you. Knocking on the door, you hear something that sounds like glass clinking, before a girl's voice says "Who is it?"

After a moment of confusion where you explain your status as the school's newest student, you open the door...

...and see a brown-haired girl standing in the middle of a glass cube that encloses nearly the whole of the room, with only a four-foot "antechamber" between the wooden door of the room and the high-tech glass door that separates the other girl from yourself. After you adjust to the scene you realize almost everything in the room is made from the same strange translucent material!

"Oh. Hello," she says, as an arc of white electricity leaps from her leg to the ground with a painful-sounding zap.

    What now?

"That's a pretty name," she says as you introduce yourself. "I'm Megan. Van Hollen," she adds. When she finds out that you're going to Antarctica as well as the others she looks a little down.

From the far end of the hallway Sam shouts "AIIIINOOOOO!", hard to hear at this distance even with her voice. Megan picks up a flat rectangular plate of glass off of a similar-materialed table and holds it up, displaying rows of tiny letters emblazoned on it. "Well, I have this to read, anyway. That'll take me all day!" she says, smiling. "You should probably go, you don't want to be late."

The limit of your control over the timestream is a bubble a hundred feet out from you - since the Mansion is considerably larger you rely only on your two feet to carry you there on time, and as you arrive you see all the other students are zipping up their parkas!

Dr. McCoy, Mr. Logan and Mr. Summers are standing in the main entry along with the students, and as Dr. McCoy pulls out a clipboard he calls each student's name in turn as they appear in their own panel, each striking a personality-appropriate expression:

    * Ricardo (a hotheaded young man with the power of kinetic manipulation!)
    * Clarissa (a chatty tomboy who can hear the secret language of machines!)
    * Luke and Mary Ann (two young telepaths who share a common mind!)
    * Caleb (a brooding young man whose powers are yet a mystery!)
    * Noah (Caleb's older brother, whose touch transforms him into a duplicate of anyone!)

"Ah, there you are, Aino," McCoy says, flipping the paper on his clipboard back. As you slip into line Ricardo says "For somebody who controls time, you're late an awful lot."

Clarissa elbows Ricardo, turning the grin he made at his own joke into a scowl. "What, it's true?" he protests from behind you.

Sam floats down next to you as Mr. Logan tosses you your own bright red parka, identical to everyone else's. "Hey. Took you long enough," she grins. "All I know about Antarctica is penguins and polar bears," she adds, before McCoy corrects her with a rather long-winded explanation of why large carnivores are not present on the surface. As you and Sam look at each other, regret over saying anything apparent in her eyes, you look back at Noah, long since back to his original form.

He notices you looking and smiles, as McCoy continues on. "First time to Antarctica?" he jokes.

"Yes, Aino?" McCoy asks as you raise your hand, politely interrupting his discourse. "Oh, yes, I suppose you weren't there when we first discussed it. We're going to East Antarctica, quite a distance from McMurdo Station, I'm afraid. We'll be taking some samples of bacteria to study once we return. There's also a chance we might see the aurora australis while we're there."

As you zip up your own parka, ensuring it fits properly, you realize that rather than heading for the garage to drive to an airport, the students are filing out of the room after the teachers, deeper into the Mansion! As Sam waves you along you follow, confused, as you enter a room you've never been in and see what looks like elevator doors - indeed, they are, as everyone steps inside and the the doors close.

Sam grins at you as the elevator descends, and just as the doors open she says "You'll like this."

Outside the doors waits a sleek, snub-nosed monorail, two mirror-image cars joined end to end, aimed at a metallic blue tunnel that stretches off into the distance! As the other students look around with varying degrees of wonder or feigned jadedness you all board it, and sitting inside its soft padded benches the tunnel begins to blur past!

A moment later it slows to a stop, and the doors slide open, revealing a large hangar with a high-tech jet plane waiting!

"Betcha didn't know they had a plane," Sam says, poking you in the side jokingly. "So what do you think?" It takes her a moment to realize that you're not next to her anymore, instead pressing McCoy for details!

"Er, it can reach Mach 2 at sea level, but at its maximum flight ceiling I believe it can edge just over Mach 4. The government, well... the Professor has a special relationship with the government. If you're interested Mr. Summers offers a piloting course for the third-year students."

As the others climb up the crew ladder into the fuselage McCoy assures you that there will be plenty of time for questions once they're in the air. Mr. Logan casts a critical eye over all the students as they find their seats, then growls "Listen up, half-pints. Where we're going is no place to joke around. You don't want to end up lost or dead, you do what we say. That means no horsing around and no leaving the group. Got it?"

"You ready, Slim?" he calls up to Mr. Summers, who begins prepping the plane from his place in the pilot's seat. "OK, I've said my piece, so uh... have fun," Mr. Logan adds before turning and finding his own seat nearer to the front, leaving you and the other students in the rear passenger compartment unchaperoned.

The walls outside the plane begin to move, and you realize that the plane itself is on a giant turntable, slowly spinning to the side! After a moment it shudders and stops, and through the windows above its nose you can see an underground runway sloping upward!

Mr. Logan pokes his head back in just long enough to bark "Getcher belts on!" and make sure everyone straps themselves in before retreating to the front cabin again.

"Hold on to your butts," Sam grins as the jet lurches forward, speeding up the runway! As the shaft blurs past on either side the walls are suddenly illuminated, and a moment later the craft shoots into the bright sky!

As it climbs higher and higher into the air, Sam says "Oh, yeah, I've been in it twice before. Once when we went to Mozambique so Mary Ann could be in her sister's wedding, and once when we went to California."

"Other secrets, huh," she smiles. "Guess you'll have to find out!"

    Uh, no, it wouldn't.
We would only end up stopping time on the Blackbird, and there's not telling how that would work when we're flying well above the maximum range of our powers. We could end up dropping like a rock out of the sky since the engines are frozen in time.

And if you're thinking about using a constrained tachyon bubble to accelerate the Blackbird's motion, we have no control over it and could result in us launching the plane into low-Earth orbit.

At that moment Sam grabs your hand and pulls you away. "Come on, they've got soda in the galley dispenser." As she drags you past Clarissa talking with Luke and Mary Ann toward the front of the plane Dr. McCoy looks up from his book and uncrosses his legs. "Enjoying the flight, girls?"

"Oh, that's, well, where to start?" McCoy says when you ask him about the School. "I was actually in the first class at Xavier's, though no doubt my youth and vanity would deny that. Living there full-time is a strange mix - weeks with seemingly nothing amiss, followed by days or weeks of dealing with this or that oddity, then back to tranquility again. Idea for when we get back to the mansion: Ask Noah to touch Sam and become her for a while. Let's see how far the transformation goes. If it's all the way down to the genetic, then he should be able to duplicate her powers while he's in that form. Then they can hit the danger room together and she an teach him how to fly in her body. They get a bonding experience, we get to satisfy our intellectual curiosity and adolescent urge to meddle in others' lives. If he doesn't get the powers along with the shape, have him hold her hand and then touch him lightly, to see if he can turn into a composite of two different people.

"Go, go, go!" Sam shouts as you frantically mash the buttons over and over, tongue jutting out determinedly as Mario leaps across the chasm, trounces his foe, and - success!

"Yeah!" the others on your team shout, as that last move puts you ahead in the final round of this impromptu game of team-vs-team Super Mario Land! You and Sam hug each other tightly as Clarissa trash-talks the boys' team, to which Ricardo is happy to respond.

"Hey!" Mr. Logan says, sticking his head in the cabin again. "Quiet that racket down, we're about to land. And get yer belts back on."

A few minutes later you feel the plane begin to sink as the clouds below rise up to envelop you - and when they part the land beneath gleams with pristine white nothingness!

"OK, we're here," Mr. Logan says once the plane lands. Out the windows you can see a the top of a lone brown mountain peak jutting up out of the ice that rises up around it, and more towering crests of blue-white ice around it. As everyone pulls their parkas back on Dr. McCoy and Mr. Summers join the group.

"Now students, we're looking for samples of life that will most likely be embedded in ice. The best way to find it is to look for a discoloration or a dirty-looking section of the cliff wall," McCoy says as he hands out small racks of rubber-covered containers and hand chisels. "You'll each form teams of two and spread out along the cliff wall," he says, handing a set to you.

"Oh, hey," Clarissa says as you grab her gloved hand with your own. "Partners?" she asks holding up her own batch of supplies.

"All right, let's try some samples here, and we'll move down the face of the cliff as long as the weather remains so benevolent," McCoy says, demonstrating how to collect material and use the biological analyzer to determine its sterility. Across the bright white ice you can see Mr. Logan standing at the foot of the Blackbird's ladder smoking a cigar.

"You aced that science test on Thursday, didn't you?" Clarissa asks, smiling. "Lucky me!"

"Oh, wow, that's a great idea," Clarissa says, turning the sampling device over in her hands. "Let's see-"

The sampler beeps twice, and Clarissa looks up happily. "I think it's overclocking itself now. You wanna try over there?" she asks, gesturing at a smudge on the wall of ice. A few minutes later you are rewarded as the slushy pieces of dirt you chip off of the wall turn out to be rich with bacillus hembeeus, according to Clarissa's modified mechanism!

With four of your six sample containers filled, you find yourself outdistancing the other groups, and soon you and Clarissa can barely see the Blackbird. Dr. McCoy is some fifty yards back along the cliff wall with another group, seemingly engrossed in what they've found.

As Clarissa takes a moment to recalibrate the scanner you look out at the endless expanse of white that stretches away toward the ocean McCoy said was two hundred miles away, you see a glimmer of something darker than the ice - darker, yet still reflective. Squinting harder at it makes it no easier to see.

"Huh? Oh, yeah, OK," Clarissa says, seemingly deep in conversation with the scanner. You look back at the other team, see McCoy's back turned, and decide not to bother him, instead walking out across the icy ground toward the dark shape. It's not more than fifty feet from the cliff wall, but it still takes you a minute of real time to walk to it. As you approach, you concentrate and feel the tachyon field around you begin to slow as you dam the timestream with your mind.

On approach, the shape resolves itself into a smooth rounded hump of metal that rises up out of the ice at waist height, once reddish or purple in color, now streaked in black marks. In some places the painted surface has flecked off, revealing a shiny silver gleam underneath.

Puzzled, you walk around the far side of it and look down, where something lies buried only inches below the surface.

Your eyes trail across the ice, and take in the full form entombed just below your feet - a huge robotic humanoid twenty feet tall!

Dr. McCoy looks up from the distance and waves, then hands something to the students he's with and begins walking toward you . Clarissa, however, is much closer, having followed you out to where the huge robot's foot juts from the surface.

"What is it?" she asks in wonderment, looking at it. You see her eyes flutter in that way that you've seen her do around machines, and suddenly she gasps! As you look down, the robot's huge head, big enough for you to fit inside, seems to shudder and its eyes begin to glow!

Suddenly, the gigantic foot next to you shifts!

    WAT DO?

Suddenly you spin around, digging your boots into the ice and thrusting your hands outward with a cry! The air around you ripples and stills, and as the tachyon field stretches out and splashes over the huge robot it slows to a crawl, blaring "TEMPORAL DISTURBANCE DETEC-" in its harsh voice before freezing as motionless as it had been a moment ago - although now it hangs in mid-stride, seemingly off-balance and ready to topple over!

Clarissa looks up at it, then around at you, caught inside the bubble of realtime while the world around you pauses. "Look-" she points, and your concentration over the tachyon field is enought that you can turn, to where McCoy stands transfixed as well.

"Girls-" he shouts, before realizing that he is unstuck and the robot is still held fast. "Er, come away from there right now!"

"It's OK, Dr. McCoy," Clarissa says, staring intently at it. "It's not going to try to hurt us any more."

"Were I sure I could be sure of that," McCoy says, taking you both gently but firmly by the hand, before letting go of your own. "Er, Aino, I wonder if you wouldn't mind holding it in place a bit longer until Mr. Summers and Mr. Logan get here?" he asks, as other figures race across the ice toward you.

    What now?

Reluctant to disobey a teacher, you do what he asks, nudging the bubble of realspace around you just far enough out for its head to poke through the tachyon field. As Mr. Summers begins to lift his visor the machine utters one more proclamation:

After proving that Sentinel is truly under her control, she obeys Dr. McCoy and deactivates it as you crawl out of the first igloo any of you have ever seen in the Southern Hemisphere. "This is really well-made!" Luke and Mary Ann say, crawling out behind you.

"I told you so," Clarissa says to everyone defiantly.

"Yes, well, I'm afraid we'll have to leave it here for the time being," McCoy cautions her. "Mr. Logan has called for some people to come pick it up, but they won't be here for several more hours and it's getting close to dark."

"Come on, everybody," Mr. Summers says to the chorus of "Awwws".

As you walk back toward the Blackbird from the slouched-over robot dwarfing the igloo it sits next to, you notice a line of penguins waddling around the corner of the cliff.

"Now girls, the Antarctic ecosystem is a very delicate thing, and besides, these animals need to live in an environment they're suited fo-"

"Oh, all right, one more petting, but then you need to leave them alone," McCoy says, as you, Clarissa and Sam corner a trusting penguin and dispense a group cooing. "Up we go, time to head back."

As the three of you walk to the Blackbird, you in the middle with one arm around Sam's shoulder and the other around Clarissa's, Sam giggles.

"I think he might like me."

The Blackbird's hatch closes, and in the comparative heat of the jet's cabin everyone discards their parkas and straps in, leaving the dimming ice under them behind and rising up into the sunset.

Far below, left behind by their passing, the penguins flap and squawk as they investigate the igloo and the mute giant sitting next to it. The last rays of sun strike its head, sending up a cold glare before shadows overtake it.

That's it for our fifth issue, so let's get right to the Mutie Mail mailbag! Our first letter is from a familiar name:

    >Dr. Professor X

    >Why the heck did they not steal a penguin?

    >-Anonymous

Well Annie, as much as the girls would like to have a new pet around the Mansion, I'm not sure the Professor would go for it! After all, not everyone can fly, and if Mr. Logan stepped in something it might mean penguin shish-kebabs! Besides, as our friends at the ASPCA tell us, removing an animal from its natural habitat can lead to stress, illness, and even death! Think of the penguins!

    >What is the comic-makers' stance on romance and sexuality in the comic?

    >Sincerely, Ken.

Well, Ken, as you may know all issues of Mutant Quest are written to follow the Comics Code Authority's guidelines. However, we believe that true love, whether between a girl and her teammate or an editor and a delicious powdered donut, has a place in this story. Let's be frank, though: our girl's only been at the Mansion for a week, and she's already gotten herself involved in several relationships! Nobody knows what the future holds, but a kiss here and there wouldn't be too far-fetched. Hope that answers your question!
