509 KB Rising Sons Official Thread Anonymous 04/18/11(Mon)18:53 No.14638189
So last night, some fag complained about a Japanese-based space marine chapter that probably wasn't even canon and it turned into a discussion about how cool a samurai chapter would be.
    Enter the Rising Sons.
Here's some features to discuss: Deathwatch Rules. Color scheme (I'm liking the dark blue scheme and the black-and-gold scheme). Fluff, etc.

Here are some ideas to put out there.
Their homeplanet is partially governed by the chapter master, referred to as Shogun. It is forever locked in the Sengoku period, where clans constantly war for prestige and honor. The most honorable of warriors are recruited to serve in the Shogun's personal clan and trained to be Rising Sons.
White Scars geneseed, Space Wolf style of recruitment (new space marines serve as a specific kind of space marine, instead of as scouts. scouts are specially trained. ninjas!)
Chaplains wrap their heads or helmets in cowls and use power naginatas.
All Rising Sons carry a wakazashi at all times. It functions as their sidearm, like a combat knife or gladius would.
Rising Son officers often wear those samurai coats over their armor.
    >> Anonymous 04/18/11(Mon)18:56 No.14638222
    Power Tessen?
Instead of not wearing a helmet, the higher ups could have that Mempo(?) grinning demon Mark-15 Fondorian Helment, or some shit
    >> Anonymous 04/18/11(Mon)19:00 No.14638259
So what kind of force would they send to a Crusade? Maybe X amount of guardsmen regiments led by a company sized force of Rising Sons led by a Shogun (which would represent a Company Captain) and an honor guard of first company units.

    >>14638189
Each Marine would be assigned a house (each one like the different clans from the Edo period) and if their planet is attacked they must defend that house at all costs. When they are in the regular companies (2-10th) they don't wear back banners but when they're in the 1st company they wear back banners showing what house they belong to.

The Shogun would be the chapter master.
    >> Anonymous 04/18/11(Mon)19:05 No.14638295
LOL... Im that "some fag" and have been helping out with the creation... and I totally approve of the entire process.

As for the "different" color schemes for each company, I was figureing that the first company would have one color scheme, while the rest have the a different but same one. Isnt there a few chapters that do that?

Also, as for the Chaplains, instead of Worshipping the Emperor as a God, they see him as a holy ancestor... The first of the first. They look to him as a shining example of what they should/need to be. (Gotta love shinto)

Naginatas are two handed... Lets see if we can keep it one handed to go along with the rules a bit more maybe? Or make it an upgrade to them?

We could build them by the Grey Knights codex. The naginata would be a nemesis halberd, which is two handed.

In deathwatch they would probably be like the Storm Warden's Claymore and be an option for them to take when creating their character.

I dunno, in my opinion, I think the lesson should be that once they enter the Rising Sons, THAT becomes their clan and in the grand scheme of things, their feudal clans' ambitions are petty compared to the Imperium. Also, space marines from rival clans having to train and fight side-by-side is a pretty near concept.
    >> Anonymous 04/18/11(Mon)19:12 No.14638359
    >>14638259

Now there is an interesting idea. They take in a lot of recruits and use them as shock troops in guard regiments raised from their recruiting worlds. Companies of space marines then lead these guard regiments as well as fighting in the manner befitting space marines. This means that their fleet is bigger but it means they can function independently of other Imperial military assets which normal space marines have to avoid due to their lack of numbers. Naturally this brings them into conflict with the administratum and some guard leadership

You have it backwards, bro. The daimyo were clan leaders. The shogun was the supposed leader of the military and dictator of Japan. There was never more than one Shogun (at least there shouldn't ought to have been), while Japan had hundreds of daimyo at a time.

The guard regiments are specialised in tactics that complement the space marine way of war. Static defence and such. They're the anvil with the marines being the hammer.

The Daimyo would be in charge of the whole force but the IG general attached to the group would deal with things like handling the administratum and coordinating efforts from space. Really the general would be a glorified aid for the Daimyo but would make sure the regiments were in line. I would assume also that the Captains and the general would sort of form a bond to where the general would know what the Captain would want in terms of dealing with higher ups and flak he would get from different agencies.

Personally I think it would work better if it was WWII IG with feudal Japan infighting. They didnt fight each other ALL the damn time, and that would not be in the Chapters/Imperiums self interest. Why would you trust a Chapter with holy relics/shrines if the world they were on was let to be in turmoil and infighting all the damn time?

It varies. Some worlds such as more developed ones are governed normally. But some are adeptus non and under the complete control of the marine chapter.

They will have a planetary PDF sometimes if the marines maintain a sufficient tech level. Fenris for example may have a limited PDF drawn from the few technologically advanced enclaves on the world. While Macragge has a fucking huge PDF because its developed

Since we're establishing that the Rising Sons have domain over an entire sector, we can have a shrine world as well as a feudal world and a WWII Japan world. Here's how I see the feudal world:
An entire planet modeled after Sengoku Japan, mostly clusters of island with few large land masses. The Rising Sons let the clan lords govern their own territories as long as they pay their taxes to the capital province, where the Shogun resides. They encourage war amongst the clans to breed the finest warriors.
During battles of special importance, the Shogun may send representatives to observe the battle. The clan generals will inform their troops that the Shogun's men are watching and to fight their hardest. The most outstanding of warriors will be called to serve in the Shogun's personal clan, where they will be trained to be space marines.
Occasionally, a clan lord will get over-confident and attempt to attack the planetary capitol and take the title of Shogun for himself. Of course, these attacks invariably end in failure, but it isn't uncommon for the Rising Sons to recruit from the clans of these failed attacks. If a man is brave enough to fight a space marine, imagine what he'll be willing to fight as a space marine!

My thoughts on Chain of Command
    Shogun(chapter Master)
    Daimyo (Captains)
    Samurai (Sergeants)
    Whatsjapaneseforbrother? (Battle brothers)

One thought: What if we made this a VERY melee oriented army. Like all units can take close combat weapons melee oriented.

Cause if we went with that I was thinking that each type of unit has a different CQC weapon. Standard brothers have katana-esque swords, Terminator marines have Naginata(could probably use grey knights bits for these), Devastators have Yari, and assault have No-Dachi

Just some thoughts on fluff (i'm terribad at names):
Three major planets at three stages of development
    >Kytoro
    >Heavily industrialized, not hive or forge however
    >Produces most of the chapters wargear
    >All major areas are controlled by forges/smiths/whateversoundsgood
    >Every 4 years, the various Forges "Bid" for the honor of producing the chapter's wargear through a period of intense conflict between them. The forge that captures the most terrotory is deemed to have constructed the best quality equipment and is thus awarded the contract. Techmarine are usually from here

    >Okasa
    >Medieval tech level
    >Classic Sengoku age japan on a worldwide scale
    >In order to avoid wasting too much manpower, war is confined to certain parts of the world for a duration of time deemed necessary by the chaplains. >Shrine world
    >The spiritual home of the chapter
    >Home to several cults that interpret the Emperor in different ways
    >Warfare is usually considered a "Holy War". Guns are frowned upon by some sects and embraced by others. To avoid undue damage to the shrines and temples, the wars generally consist of duels between champions or take place far away from the cities. The sites of the major battles tend to result in the foundation of a new shrine on that spot by the winning side, with the usual end being that the losing side's temple falls to pieces and eventually returns to being part of the landscape. this results in an eternal cycle of shrines being built and falling to pieces.

    Crossbolter.

A variant of the classic bolter, the crossbolter utilizes bolts that are slightly longer than the Imperial norm.

This gives them much longer range and a highly explosive impact. The chemicals needed to compensate for the longer shells, however, are taxing on the crossbolter body and tend to throw off the weapon's alignment from the enormous back-blast they exert when leaving the barrel.

The Rising Sons, being enigmatic and focused on excellence by nature, have earned the ire of the Adeptus Mechanicus on numerous occasions for their unsanctioned modifications to existing weapons.

From what I know about the Sengoku period, here's how I see it:
Samurai supplied their own armor, so there was little uniformity. They would generally just have banners with the same design as their Daimyo to indicate alleigence
The mass produced stuff for the non-samurai, however, tended to be black though there were 1-2 clans that painted it red to psych out their enemies.

    how about ronins?

We could have some sort of modified ronin?

Like when a Marine fails a mission or is otherwise dishonored, he is cast out form his clan.
Some would join in a special company of sorts.

Some would set out solo and either join the deathwatch as blackshields or just wander around on the sector's planet and fight until one of the daimyo deems them worthy of joining their clan.

Maybe some could wander the imperium so you could use them in dark heresy/rogue trader/ deathwatch games as lone wandering marines

Probably with unusual weapons since they couldnt afford power armor without their clan's backing

    Nope. Samurai were servants.

    You had;

Hinin - the people who carted dead bodies, shit, etc and were too unclean to notice.

Heimin - farmers, labourers and the like.

Samurai - split into different ranks and positions.

Hinin and heimin were too uneducated to keep records, so you also had samurai that spent more time with an ink brush than a weapon. These samurai were not bushi, but they were definitely samurai.

It had been decided a LONG time ago that it would be the White Scars... Too late to change it now.

As it stands, I would make it a fast attacking army, but not relegated to JUST bikes. I kinda like em with Jump Packs myself... but that is just me.
