Last thread, we got a ton of shit done, but the work isn't over yet!
We still need a finalized version of the chapter badge and some work done on the wiki (the addition of subsector Yamato and such).
More fluff ideas would also be appreciated. Will you answer the Emperor's call? Banzai!!

We actually went through a bunch of color scheme involving red. It's not supposed to be Japan as much as it is samurai-era Japan. We wanted to make a color scheme that reflected samurai armor and tons upon tons of historical suits of armor were looked to for inspiration. We found that black or dark blue armor with gold lace were extremely popular, so we went with that. The chapter badge is red and white, though.

Funny enough, the idea sprang from a weeaboo hate thread.
However, the majority of the fluff has been inspired by Japanese history rather than pop culture. The think the only anime reference made thus far is Battle Barge Yamato.

Yamato is a nice name, reminds me of the Battlecruiser special ability from starcraft.

And I like this Rising Sons idea more than the Emperor's children.

I might try to contribute but i'll wait to see how things progress so i can have a nice base to work with.

And please lets not have these guys use Power Katana's or some shit...

Im trying to point out their use against the possible enemies they might encounter.

    Think of it this way

A chainsword will always be MORE usefull in any given situation than a power katana.

A power sword is much more durable and stronger than a power katana.

Why would a chapter pick looks over efficiency?

What makes a power sword more durable than a power katana? You realize that we're talking about Warhammer 40,000, right? Aesthetics ALWAYS take priority over practicality! The only difference between a power sword and a power katana is the shape! That's it. There's no issue of durability or practicality.

Long story short, it isn't just because you posted a Chinese polearm while talking about naginata that we can tell you don't really know jack shit about swords and how they are used. So kindly stop blabbering about whatever stereotypes it is you have picked up and treat as universal truths.

If you actually want to learn, hang around over at www.myarmoury.com, www.swordforum.com, www.nihontomessageboard.com and http://www.armsandarmourforum.com/forum/ for half a decade or so. Combined with a few good books and some general poking around that'll give you a decent basis. Oh, and make sure you get to handle some real swords, old originals or at the very least high end replicas. Odd are it'll be quite an eye-opener in regards to the variation that's out there.

Froma modeling perspective, and a historical one, vladed naginatas are better. You can use grey knights bit if you actually want to run the army.

Make the left shoulder pad red.
Rules suggestion, Uber Grit, that way a glaive and a bolt pistol can be used on a model while still technically having a bolter

Which is kinda odd here, since last I looked your average power sword was a single-edged, single-handed sword with a D-guard.

    >>A MEDIEVAL EUROPEAN CRUCIFORM SWORD.

This makes it all fit even worse, given that longswords are only a small subsection of the medieval European cruciforms swords, and many longswords also manage to be post-medieval.

And why should that specific sword type be the norm, did John Clements get elected world president or something?

Basically, people who aren't up to date on historical weapons shouldn't try to use "but in reality" as an argument when designing space marine power swords (and those whoa re up to date will probably know better than to try it themselves). At best it just looks silly, at worst it propagates any number of myths.

Lemme think. Perhaps the Van Der Graffenhook trade dynasty settle in Yamato after uh... let's see here. Perhaps the dynasty found was so enamoured with the sector and it's eccentricities that he moved the entire dynasty's operations there, setting up shop on a hive world. Because there has to be a hive world in this subsector (that's one half GitS, one third Cyborg 009, and fill in the rest with Snow Crash or something else).

Anyway, the Van Der Graffenhooks maintain headquarters on a star fortress orbiting that hive world (to be named by someone infinitely more creative then me). They bring in exotic goods from the rest of the Imperium through the mighty trade fleet and export the various curiosities you find in the Yamato sector.

I suppose it could use more fluffing out, but uh... it's a start, I think.

I'm thinking that their star fortress, while the headquarters of the dynasty, they probably have a homeworld outside of the sector that they prefer to recruit from, but I'm thinking over the centuries, more and more Yamato natives have found a position in the merchant fleet.

Also, they probably never provided anyone to the Rising Sons, at least from the main family, incase something terrible happens, the warrant doesn't pass to a marine chapter.

Wow.... Lots of hate n stuff in the early bits....

    My thoughts
Color scheme: Kind of bland in my opinion. I get that we want to go with historical colors, but it just seems...meh. I'd add a bit more color personally. Maybe make the torso red. I'll try my hand at it a little later.

Weapons: Seeing how (other than the Katana/bow) there were really no "Set" weapons that a samurai must absolutely have, I'd say we just say they have CqC weapons and let the individual modellers sort it out.
Also: Bolters on pole arms seems like a neat idea. I support

Fluff: Nice to see that my suggestions (Kyotoro and Otera) made it in there.

The redder one is the better one (hurr) But I feel that there should be some sort of detail thatgives off that Samurai feel. Maybe the whole shogun crest thing? Also, I feel the facial part of the helmet should be black, and perhaps red stripes on the pauldrons?

    Not very samurai-ish but......

And I think they should have power katanas. Ultramarines have gladius, Wolves use axes, Scars use scimitars.

Maybe we can have the Rising Sons getting into a small conflict with the White Scars? To represent the Mongolian invasions of Japan, only to have a warp storm come out of nowhere in the middle of the Scars fleet? (Which did actually happen, when the Mongolians were trying to invade Japan, a typhoon came out of nowhere. It happened two times I believe...)

Well it's been thousands of years since the original colonists of Sekai were sent back to the stone-age, worked their way up, and invented the katana, and in the future they say "Hey, this works for us." So the Rising Sons decide to turn it into their own style of power weapon.

Just for handy reference, here is a chart with the components of historical o-yoroi ("great armour") listed, so you can actually make accurate references to components you want to add on, rather than trying to describe it.

For example, the thigh armour plates are known as "haidate" (some sources also use "waidate"). The greaves are known as "sune-ate" or "suneate").

Both of these dovetail well. The Yamato Sector is located on the Eastern Fringe, close to Tau territory. Thus, the Rising Sons are on the galactic fringe, far away from the Imperial Core, and need to fight the Tau a lot.

Works well. As noted in prior threads, it's gonna have to be a somewhat conversion-heavy army to actually field.

How's this for a bit more of Rising Sons history?

In the mid 41st millennium, a terrible Orkish Waaagh! descended upon the sector which the Yamato subsector is a part of, devastating much of the sector and crippling its economy. The inefficient bureaucracy of the Administratum delayed any deployment to aide the planetary defense forces forced to face the green tide. This vulgar display of power attracted the attention of various other Ork warbands, causing the already massive Waaagh! to swell to unfathomable size.
No Imperial force seemed to be capable of hindering it even slightly. At last, the Waaagh! made it to Subsector Yamato, where Battlefleet Yamato and the Rising Sons navy clashed with the Waaagh!'s vanguard fleet. Casualties on both sides were massive, but they were ultimately ordered by the Shogun to fall back to Sekai to make their final stand.
Just as the Orkish fleet cast its terrible shadow over the surface of Sekai, a warp storm erupted and destroyed the entire main fleet! The Waaagh! was dealt a fatal blow by this freak warp storm and soon dissolved into scattered warbands to be cleaned up in the aftermath.
The denizens of Subsector Yamato saw this warp storm as proof of the Emperor's favor towards them.

The Rising Sons are notorious among the many chapters of Astartes for their practice of 'requisitioning' young women from any planet upon which they make landfall. Stripped of all belongings, these so-called comfort women are given minimal indoctrination to their new lives as sex slaves to their Space Marine masters, the constant rapes and beatings described as being necessary sacrifices for the glory of the Emperor.

Each comfort woman may be expected to service dozen or even hundreds of Space Marines, especially since the harshness and privation of their duties causes a high mortality rate. Months may go by before the Rising Sons deploy to a planet capable of supplying fresh requisitions; and in that time the number of surviving comfort women dwindles rapidly.

So I'm the guy that suggested the uh... Rogue Trader based off the dutch. Still don't have much, but would a Rogue Trader dynasty make for a good ally to a Space Marine chapter, either way?

Either way, there's some spin that could be done on this, making them like the dutch were in Nagasaki (hence the star fortress above a hive world) and having most dynasty members come from outside Yamato (but perhaps some lord on some world, managed to marry into the Dynasty on the hopes that perhaps he might gain some indepence).

In fact, that might be interesting thing for third sons of noble families in Yamato to joing the Van Der Graffenhook trade fleets. They get to leave the sector and they don't have to follow the customs, especially if they were rebellious.

That's the unfortunate bit. I don't have much. I don't have a name for the hive world (just that it's all cyberpunk and japanese), nor for the fortress.

Though I do have the idea is that if you can make it to the Star Fortress, then perhaps you're beyond the law of your world, since you basically belong to the rogue trader dynasty, or something like that.

It's just a spur of the moment idea. I mean, for the longest time the only foreign people allowed in Japan were the dutch, and only then in Nagasaki... I was thinking about maybe we could do something with that and put another large force, other then the Rising Sons.

They're different culturally and they're rogue traders. They're probably terribly eccentric.

There was no solution to the power katana as there was no problem aside from some whiners who just found out about the Rising Sons.
Officers with power swords will have those swords shaped like katanas. There's nothing special about them other than their shape (similar to how Space Wolves get viking-like power axes and White Scars get power scimitars). Not all Rising Sons carry a power katana. Their basic close-combat weapon is a wakazashi, used to the same effect as a space marine combat knife or Ultramarine gladius.

Have you guys already thought up some names for these guys yet? Don't know if you have or not, but it's getting late, and here are some ideas:
Yamamoto (based on the admiral who planned Pearl Harbor)
Kuribayashi (planned the last stand at Iwo Jima)
Saburo Sakai (Japan's second top fighter ace during WWII, first died during the war, I think)

Yeah the guy talking about the Dutch Rogue Traders suggested a hiveworld, too. Write one up and we'll see how everyone takes it.
