    128 KB Mutant Quest: Tenth Issue Spectacular! Professor X !Wz87.gYWh. 05/05/11(Thu)13:55 No.14823309
    The year is 1995, and anti-mutant riots are sweeping the nation. Fearing what might happen to you if your true nature is discovered, your parents have enrolled you in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where you can learn to harness your amazing gifts, or at least be isolated from those who fear and hate you.

    Until recently you were simply Aino Virta, a fifteen year old girl living with a secret burden known only to your immediate family: your mutant power - until recently quite uncontrollable - to slow the fabric of time itself in a bubble centered around you with a smaller bubble of "realtime" inside the field where you can function normally. Through daily practice in the Danger Room you've managed to gain a strong control over your power, to the point where you can slow down the world around you without concentrating (as long as you're not under stress), and even move the bubble around to encompass or exclude different things!

    When the terrorist Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants attacked an anti-mutant rally in New York City and took Senator Robert Kelly hostage, your teachers revealed that they moonlight as a vigilante group to combat exactly this kind of trouble! With all the senior staff called away to deal with the crisis you were left in the care of Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man! Unfortunately for him, his mutant power to create duplicates of himself was not enough to keep you and your classmates from sneaking out, stealing the school's second Blackbird jet, and making your way to NYC to rescue your teachers!

    Having saved a man trapped in a burning building, you and your newly founded team flew to Manhattan's Upper West Side, as Remote's technopathy located the other Blackbird in a city park - upon landing next to it, however, you found the park seemingly deserted!

    (cont. on next page)
    >> Professor X !Wz87.gYWh. 05/05/11(Thu)13:56 No.14823317
    The team readies itself for its next move in a two-page spread, as their name and power appears in text boxes next to each one!

    * Aino/ Tachyon: Chronological decelerator
    * Sam/ Dragonfly: Telekinetic flier
    * Ricardo/ Bullet: Momentum translator
    * Clarissa/ Remote: Technopath
    * Luke and Mary Ann/ Omni: Psychic gestalt
    * Noah/ Copycat: Physiological mimic
    * Megan/ Tesla: Bio-electric emitter

    "Good plan so far, Aino - I mean, Tachyon," Remote says, looking back at you from the pilot's seat as the Blackbird touches down next to its twin. "So what now? Omni's still getting a headache trying to cut through this psychic interference," she reminds you, "And they can't locate the Professor yet either." As she gestures to Luke and Mary Ann you can see that whatever's blocking their psi-powers is taxing them severely.

    "Wherever they are, it's gotta be somewhere close to here," Copycat points out. "Unless they all turned invisible, nobody saw anyone fly away in the last thirty minutes."

    "Maybe we should split up?" Dragonfly asks, floating in a readied position three feet above the Blackbird's floor. "Like, two teams. We could cover more ground that way."

    "Maybe," Remote agrees. "What d'you think, boss-lady?" she asks you. "You want me and Omni to stay here again, or do we get to go see some of the action? I mean, don't get me wrong," she says, hugging the fuselage. "Having this thing do whatever I say is the best thing ever, but I mean, I want to rescue some people from burning buildings too!"

    You've taken up the mantle to team leader - now it's time to put it to the test! What's the plan, mutie scum?

    my one friend was in a Marvel game in an alternate universe. basically they were at the Xavier academy, but Magneto and Xavier had not split up the school

    they were both headmasters, the brotherhood was part of the team, and they played as OCs that sort of had to choose when the team finally did split up

    all i can remember power-wise is that one player had a fat kid character, who could turn his body into any substance he ate (basically bit the finger off a Sentinal and became Colossus). one girl had a crush on Pyro, and wound up sleeping with him. she comes up from the basement all afterglow, only to have Pyro come from upstairs. the party looks puzzled before Mastermind come up from the basement and gives them a nod

    extra funny/creepy because i never played with this group, but I've heard this girl say "Just ONE game! just ONE where I don't get molested! that's all i ask!"

    This is kinda new to me, what does a momentum translator do?

    >This is kinda new to me, what does a momentum translator do?

    Basically, he can speed up or slow down things; he first demonstrated his power by accelerating a Foosball so fast it broke through the wall of the Foosball table; he also uses it to "drain" all the acceleration out of things that land on him (like heavy ceilings or other teenagers), and can do so by touch.

    Dem comic-book physics, man.

    Very small or low-mass things can be sped up without touching them; otherwise it's by touch only.

    Long-time reader, first time poster here!

    We shouldn't split up. I'm cool with leaving Omni and Clarissa on board the plane, ready for backup whenever the need arises (although I'd honestly prefer taking Princess Remote over there with us, seeing as machine control can be useful on the field), but I think splitting into two different teams is a recipe for disaster, kidnapping, "turning to evil"-iness, grounding, and other shenanigans.

    Stick to one group, follow the sounds of explosions, try to avoid local police or the media. Heck, Clarissa's technopathy might be able to help us find them--she could start pinging the local streetlights for info (not sure if that will work) or just ask the other jet if it has any way of telling where they went.

    their DM sounds like he ran a good game, but had a psycho and controlling dm's girlfriend, so nuts that they didn't speak with the two friends i'm closest with in the party for about a year because they apparently weren't making every moment about her character and her storyline. they're apparently trying a White Wolf game with them soon, partly for the lolz, to see if she's still nuts, and to get one of their dice bags back

    so not so jealous of the friends for having those games as i like their players. would rather steal them and run a game for them, really. especially since they say their DM if fun but can tend to run a little grimdark, while I'm more often very casual and fun with my games

    they also ran a game of "Titans," Marvel system but DC setting. they took part in a super hero reality show that determined which of them would inherit the position as the new Teen Titans, the last mysteriously murdered and disappeared, presumed dead

    only got the information second-hand on this one, but the party...

    We're kids. We supposed to make dumb decisions, like stealing the Blackbird and taking on The Brotherhood.
    >> SubconsciousKnowledge 05/05/11(Thu)14:25 No.14823544
    I'm against splitting up personally. Clearly, we are about to tangle with the big boys, and dividing our force would sign our death warrant. (Or recruit us into the Brotherhood, fancy that)

    Instead, have Remote access the datalogs from Emperor Penguin Sr. (The first Blackbird). The internal recorders should either have the footage of the battle area, and give us a target to head towards, or would have voice recordings of the Adult X-Team discussing strategy, which also gives us a target to head towards. (Adult X-Team does NOT sound CCA Approved. . .)

    As for strategy, I'd recommend that our team goal is to A) Locate the source of psychic blockage, and B) Disrupt/Destroy/Disable it. That should safe the Adult X-Team's Bacon, without putting us in direct harm's way (Dealing with Brotherhood Heavy Bruisers)
    >> Anonymous 05/05/11(Thu)14:29 No.14823569
    >>14823535
    Dumb decisions, maybe. But Aino's smart. She should know that splitting up to fight assailants they don't know the strength of is probably a bad plan. Brotherhood mutants might be easy to take down--or they might be able to take out every single one of our little mutant team on an individual basis. Its better to find that out from our strongest possible position, than while weak and divided.

    >>14823544

    "Guys," Omni mutters weakly, "We think the source of this interference is coming from the same direction. Whatever it is, it's a lot louder that way-" they both point toward the direction the senior staff went.

    "All right, enough talk, let's go!" Bullet admonishes, knocking his fists together.

    "Ease up there, tiger," Remote says as everyone but Omni climbs, flies or jumps out of the Blackbird and onto the dark lawn. The streetlights around offer hardly any light, and so far no one has noticed a pair of jets parked in the middle of this tree-studded field...

Or touch Professor Xavier, play a decoy to get close to Magneto, then stand up and tackle him (because nobody ever expects to be body-checked by a guy in a wheelchair). Or get him close to Senator Kelley, copy him, and talk to the media about how the brave mutants saved his life.

    "Good idea," Copycat agrees. "Hey, you kids, get over here!" he says, hamming it up. "Just as long as nobody slaps me in the face. What about these uniforms?" he asks, pulling on his own UMF suit. "Not exactly inconspicuous."

    "Hey, guys!" Tesla shouts, sticking her head upside-down out the Penguin's hatch. "Guess what I found?"

    A moment later several folded piles of black cloth fall to the grass with a thump, and behind them a pile of tiny headsets!

    "Not bad," Dragonfly agrees once you all don your black track suits, concealing your UMF outfits completely, and with the hoods up you are hardly recognizable, even with your masks off!

    "You heard the lady, move out," Sam says, drifting down to the ground to walk with the rest of you.

    "We can't tell where that senator is, but when Sam was up there we could tell that place is where whatever-it-is is." Omni says, using the headsets instead of telepathy. They keep you moving in the right direction, as they relay your position from the map in the Blackbird to the beacons in your headsets.

    Threading your way through the high-class street proves challenging, as the way is jam-packed with parked cars, double-parked cars, and rows of gawkers, some carrying anti-mutant placards or signs on sticks, some dressed for a night on the town, and others simply dressed to gawk at the scene unfolding ahead!

    As you approach, you can see a faint translucent shell of wavering light that encompasses the American Museum of Natural History, and just beyond the light is a double row of police cars with spotlights aimed at the structure.

    "Whoa," Bullet says. "That's a lot of cops."

    "Aino, I don't think I can take out all those machines at the same time," Remote says warily.

    He automatically copies someone by touching them, and can do it as many times in a row as he wants (though after a point he'll probably collapse from exhaustion).

    The effect lasts for about four hours before he reverts to his normal form (unless he touches someone else), so you've got about three hours before he's not a middle-aged man any more.

    Bullet and Copycat shoulder their way through the crowd - "Excuse me!" "Pardon me!" "Excuse me!" "Excuse me!" "Hey, lady, move it, we're trying to get through here!" When you reach the front of the crowd Copycat lingers until the police captain turns and moves toward him before he slips his glove off and brushes against him, turning away with his hood up as his features contort to a perfect copy of the captain's!

    He nods and whispers "OK, we're go," into his headset, and the next instant Omni's double voice sounds over the tiny speaker in your ear.

    "This thing, the blocking thing - it's steady, like a machine. I don't know, it could be a machine or a brain, or maybe a brain hooked up to a machine. It's hard to keep a psi-link with you when you're so close to it."

    "Now or never, chief," Dragonfly mutters next to you, pulling her mask on under her hood. You step forward, planting both feet solidly on the ground, and ball your hands into fists, thrusting them down as you push outward with your power, feeling the oceanic weight of the timestream press down on you and recoil, slowing to a stop along with everyone for a hundred feet on either side of you! The ranks of policemen armed with rifles stand as still as mannequins, and the people in the crowd hold their positions, frozen in time. A moth caught in the spotlight hangs in the night air, suspended in the wavering column of light.

    "OK, let's go!" Bullet says, grabbing you and Tesla, shooting forward through the still crowd to the base of the rippling hemisphere of light that rises out of the ground.

    still, i think its safer to just incapacitate him. we might not get another chance.

    Have Copycat 'tie' (not really) our hands behind our backs, and do the same thing to Dragonfly. The others need to hide till we call. Total radio silence. Then 'Toad' will march us back to Magneto and brag about how he caught us breaking in. If Magneto asks where the other guy is, tell him we left him to watch the front door. Once we're close, we freeze magneto and everyone else, unfasten our hands, have Sam get Magneto's helmet into our hands, then we bring in the others, and Bullet and Tachyon repeatedly RKV Magneto's helmet into his chest, stomach, and whatever else might look like it could generate a telepathy-field, probably the machine Remote can't understand.With everyone but our team moving at less than 1% realtime speed, Tesla and Bullet should be able to incapacitate any other evil mutants in the area while we focus on keeping the field up. Copycat (Toadform) should walk into the room and mention how he found some kid wandering the museum. He should set us down with the other hostages (We are still hiding our UMF suits under black track suits, right?)

    Afterward, he should follow Magneto's lead, smiling and nodding. If asked about Avalanche, tell Magneto that he went to the vehicle already.

    If we are the 'prisoner', we should use our Timestop only after we are seated with the other captives. Then we can unfasten their bonds and try to communicate with the professor. He'll recognize us and we can further the plan.

    Dragonfly, Bullet, Remote, and Tesla wait in the stairwell until we have a plan.

    Megan and Ricardo walk across the room, past the still form of Magneto, through the row of frozen hostages, and as Megan cuts through the door's deadbolt with a focused arc of electricity Ricardo pulls it open, revealing the prone forms of the senior staff, all of them wearing a mechanical device of some kind over their heads!

    "He calls himself Mentallo," the Professor says, when Sam asks him about the man Ricardo just punched out. "He is a mutant, like us, but now I can see that his mental powers were greatly amplified by that device he wore. It is almost a shame that it was broken, but with it he was able to block my telepathic abilities, as well as all others.

    <<Professor?>> Omni's voice asks, weary but clearly. <Is everything over?>>

    As I read the last pages, is there a chance that someone of our little juvenile justice group might defect to Magneto's side?
    He did save Aino after all.

    We read your letter three times, then we gave it to our copy machine repairman to look over, and we still can't tell if that last part is your suggestion or your signature!

    Either way, you're not the first reader to suggest that our team of teenage heroes needs a name to tie them together... our editor's even pitching in: "Tell those little %@#&$ that we're not picking a name until we hear back from the cereal companies!"

    Ya know, with how useful her powers are, I wouldn't be surprised if someone tries to headhunt Aino from the X-Men at some point. Perhaps doubly so with Magneto now that she's part of the reason his plan has failed here.

    So, I'm back from exams and eager to checkup on Mutant Quest. When last I read a post, we were all high on the thrill of adventure and confident in our ability to save the day.

    Then we were shot. . .

    In the back. . .

    And then we made Time rue the day it decided to flow, whilst Bullet made Mentallo rue the day he decided to give us a dose of supersonic lead.

    I have to say, excellent dramatic rollercoaster here.

    The day is saved, we are likely to receive punitive punishment from the professor, and we can have everyone sign our rib-brace once we hit medbay.

    Seriously though, Thank you OP for a lovely time, and if the story heads to serious repercussions, I'm cool with that too.

    To answer all your frantic fact-findings, Aino hasn't been to college yet so her doctorate is a few years off, the next issue might be out as early as Monday, don't count out the boys just yet, and as far as any canon plots go, keep in mind that Mutant Quest runs outside of the 616 universe, so the future of this timeline is up for grabs!

    Out of character, there are dozens of ways for mutants to augment their power. Aino just hasn't found any of them yet. When/if she does, I'm certain she'll use her SCIENCE! skills to make it look like an old british police box. Once that happens, she and Causality may well have some strong words with each other.
