Tell me /tg/, when you create a female PC, what is your favorite of personality? Do you have a certain type of character you love to play for whatever reason?

Pic related, I am usually biased to the tomboyish part of the spectrum.

Sephia: Tomboyish Magical Knight who fights for Glory, Honor and Friendship. More than a little Trombe in her character design too.

Loviatar: A witch who wants three things in life, Fun, Alcohol and Adrenaline Rushes.

Nagakami Yuriko: Arch Militant who loathes the fact that the other members of the crew act like louts. Most graceful member of the group but a bit of a bitch.

I am very much against people playing the opposite gender. Even if it doesn't go the creepy route [they hump everything] or the ridiculously sexist route[they do whatever they are told, act irrationally ect] players have no real reason to do so. To be more precise I do not let guys play women. The one time our girl player had a female char, everyone was trying to get her to seduce all NPCs for anything at all. It was damn disturbing.

    Femanon here.

I am currently playing an antosocial girly half-elf wizard. To be exact she is horribly self conscious about her un-elvish body. (Huge bust and sorta chubby), yet she gets a crazy amount of white knighting from the other players. Sometimes I even get all the loot.

So antisocial girly is the way to go!
    >> Anonymous 05/05/11(Thu)18:48 No.14826091
    That's easy.
Play a character, not a caricature. Remember that a character has motivations, past experiences and a life before the game, and 90% of the things that could occur to a female could also easily occur to a man.
The bad things start when someone decides they need to go down the route of the worse aspects in order to "be a woman".
Had that happen once, so I played a guy who belonged to a madam from age 8 to 22 before "escaping". The manner of that escape I never mentioned, but it came up when we hit a town and the party found out I was wanted for murder. Turns out he convinced a patron to buy him from the madam, then killed them, robbed them, and became a wanderer. I also never told them the GENDER OF THE PATRON. That made things odd at the table with the girl AND guy playing female characters who were rape victims.

I've played True Neutral (kind of boring, but some people just can't get over a guy playing a female character), True Antisocial (but that's how I play most Chaotic characters anyhow, regardless of gender), True Tomboyish (the standard, but a good one), and Antisocial Tomboyish (which is always fun). That last one is indeed my favourite, 'though my characters' haven't been two-dimensional since I was 14 years-old, so there's always more to them than that.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/11(Thu)19:06 No.14826274
Actually there's enough lit around with strong, actual people who happen to be female. Problem is they get drowned in the sea of vomit inducing feces that gets published and caters to 'nerds'. Think Goodkin's books. If she isn't getting raped, you haven't read half the book yet.
In all seriousness, in books that are fairly chided as being naive and immature you can find women with some damn impressive character[ See Dragonlance, for example, bad books but sometimes they surprise you].

Depends on the comic and the author, just like with Japanese products.
You are more likely to see manga with women conforming to pop tropes due to the uniformity of the culture however. Other places will have a dilution of hive thought, so a female that is not a stock piece can be better received.

In one of these complex Oblivion sex mods there are personality alignments for male characters.

They are Gentle, Manly, Indifferent and Cruel, with their proper variations. They treat female PCs differently depending on their personality.

Personality should not be dependent on gender.

The moment you start trying to determine how a character should act in non-romantic/sexual situations based upon whether they have tits or a dick is the moment you have failed in playing an interesting character.

It doesn't mean anything culture wise, sure, but physically, insects still have differences depending on sex, notably their colouration and size. Like I said, it's irrelevant, really, but just because male and female act the same, I should make it male?

    That is bullshit.

Japanese stuff tend to have a wide variety of personalities when it comes to girls, to the point there is rarely a repeated one in a single series.

Meanwhile you have stuff like Justice League where all the female PCs are tough action girls with little to no personality.

I think the situation is substantially more nuanced than you think. How your character acts should be a gestalt of his or her own native predispositions combined with his or her own experiences and finally with the climate and expectations of his or her own culture.

Gender plays a role in that, but it is by no means one of the largest.

The reason is simple. Japanese are a lot more open to sex and romance than people here in the USA. Seeing anything remotely close to romance in a western cartoon was impossible, while Japanese had stuff like Sailor Moon where everything was about the power of love.

By Christian standards, a woman who has a boyfriend or lover is implied to have sex with said lover. And having sex is wrong.

So, sadly I have to agree. I don't read many comics nor mangas, but I've watched many cartoons and animes, and there is an abyss of difference between them.

Just compare, lets say, Code Geass to StormHawks.

But the near-permanent status of cartoons as solely for children turned the Western comic market niche compared to the Jap manga market. I also have to respect their constant creation of new IP compared with our very legalistic and corporate dominated market where it's all about iconic-character-branding.

I grew up outside of the U.S. for some years, and I remember watching both American and Jap stuff on satellite programming. I didn't understand the difference, but I could tell there was a difference. I loved Tom and Jerry, especially the musically-choreographed episodes. Those were unique and couldn't be compared with other shows. On the other hand I watched G.I. Joe and Fist of the North Star.

Then Captain Planet, followed by Macross.

I felt the American cartoons (that weren't old Loony Tunes) were just patronizing. The other shows, while weird as fuck for my young head, just didn't give a fuck and let me enjoy the show.

I remember the first time I explained to my dad what was happening. He only watched old Popeye back in his day, so when I told him that the black afro lady was crying because her boyfriend was a pilot that just died battling the aliens, I still remember his bewildered stare to this day.

I think I finally understand the difference.

American producers are busy keeping themselves in the black and gravitate towards exploitation of their market with proven brands. They are hamstrung by what they believe will or wont sell, or what will and wont get them in trouble with investors.

Jap producers were more free to throw money around thanks to looser bank investment policies that ran their economy until it couldn't keep up anymore today. That let them make and push all kinds of shit to the general population without too much fear of making return. Today, moe is a symptom of having to be more independent and push for BD/DVD sales (or figma if you're Sunrise).

Also there's the distinction between various literature markets in America and comic book writers. Japan regularly does animated movies, ovas and tv shows based on popular novels. You don't see a lot of that kind of branching over here. It happens for certain movie/vidya tie-ins, but nothing like Spice and Wolf getting its own manga and anime because producers thought it would work.

And at the same time there's the complete opposite stuff like this.

I won't lie, I do like the way the Japs work with their frames and flow than in most comics I've read. Likely it has to do with how much time and energy needs to go to drawing, inking and coloring each frame of a comic book compared with a usually black and white manga page.

And for this we must always hold SOME contempt for Gainax, no matter how much FLCL rocked our socks off, no matter how P&Sw/G hearkened back to the glory of 90s western cartoons fused with all that is good in anime. But neither did NGE.

I mean, there was nothing in Eva that could contribute to today's weeaboo that they didn't develop themselves through their own love of Naruto/Inuyasha or whatever. DEEP and pretension didn't need Christian crosses blowing shit up to develop - just look at the fanbase for other popular shit that people obsess over. They think the same things about their show.

The only thing I can add to this thread is that there is a lot grittier topics in anime. We get the sex in Sealab 2021, Aeon Flux and such but it's far from Berserk's Graphic Demon Rape. Western cartoons don't really have nudity, which I'm guessing is just some weird Japanese thing. Batman Beyond (Batman of the Future) has really horrible implications.

Bad Guy (not incredibly evil, but selfish evil) phases through all matter. Cannot stop phasing. Falls to centre of earth where he would either die of thirst after a few days, be suspended forever or manage to control his phasing long enough to be burn/crushed to death. Batman helpless to prevent his fate.

That's pretty much up there with Now and Then, Here and There's child-soldier/rape/torture in my opinion.

So anime has an extra market that caters for ... the depraved (for lack of a better term), obviously Hentai is in that camp and then you have gray series like Berserk which are part anime and part fetish fuel. Western Cartoons haven't really tapped into that market, it's still a mostly story telling medium. As far as I know.

Well, this is vastly owed to American prudery.
Japan had a lot of brutal and sexually explicit stuff where the West had problems with it.
But this is not owed to cultural openness but to the laxly controlled market in the time.

I think this is one of our major differences, at least for our geeky subcultures. We're obsessed with universe building, fluff, and continuously reusing or retooling it for another plot.

Japan, though, seems to pickup, consume, and drop stories and universes every other day. I think only UC Gundam shows break this general pattern where they try to inhabit the same universe. Even then it's nearly always a setting that moves the universe forward in time.

Kinda like how Capcom got pissed about Dead Rising and didn't let them make 2 for ages.

I'm proud of that, /tg/, but I still have no idea who any of them are, save for Baiken.

True Tomboyish is Sabre from the Fate Stay Night "visual novel"/fapgame/anime or one of the millions of spin-offs it spawned.
No idea where the other characters are from, but I watched just one episode after it was recommended on /tg/ so the others might be from the same setting.

Outlaw Star was Bebop's goofy magical brother.

And Big O was "Batman with a mech" only the mech fights were more like Kaiju(Spelling? Godzilla style stuff) fights.

Also Norma+Alfred(TAS version) teamup would be the greatest show ever.

I mostly play female thieves who tend to fall into the Social Tomboyish. Currently I'm running a catfolk swashbuckler in a Dragon Mech game.

I have a recurring NPC in my Shadowrun game who might fall into the antisocial tomboyish. She's an ex-noble from Tir Tairngire with a VERY checkered past. (Was a special ops soldier for Tir Tairngire when the Tir invaded Norcal. Her unit was sent into the hills to hunt down Guerillas. You can guess what they did when they found them)

Well actually I know who most of them are. (though exact names escape me). Top left is the dancer from Dragon Quest (forget which number), top middle is from a JRPG with character designs by T2, top right is brown elf named Muramasa from a Nitroplus eroge. Middle left is Queens Blade character, middle also JRPG character from same game as top middle, middle right is elf general from Queens Blade, bottom left from Queen's Blade, bottom middle is Saber, and bottom right is Baiken.

Most didn't know them because they were almost all 'game' characters rather than anime characters.

I can't argue with that. Not that being the Goofy Magical Brother made it a bad thing.

    TV censorship has gone nuts.

Mostly so they can sell DVDs.

Though anything with a hint of incest has been being dropped out of mainstream magna things. There are technically obscenity laws coming out everywhere and it's seemed to have been getting worse just to spite them. Waiting for the first legal blow and the shitstorm to follow.

This is the stuff of boarderline porn but doesn't quite make it that is sold at magna places. If doujins were sold even with the legitimate commercial stuff they'd be sued into the ground. Personally I like clunky, but only because it's usually given more detail to seem more mechanical and massive. The new Gundam Unicorn OVAs are pretty fucking neato in how everything is still fast, but the detail of movement means things look and feel heavy when they move around.

It also revived my faith in the Gundam series having thought it would be nothing but SEED melodrama or 00's boring until it started outright trolling story.
