The year is 1995, and anti-mutant riots are sweeping the nation. Fearing what might happen to you if your true nature is discovered, your parents have enrolled you in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where you can learn to harness your amazing gifts, or at least be isolated from those who fear and hate you.

Until recently you were simply Aino Virta, a fifteen year old girl living with a secret burden known only to your immediate family: your mutant power to slow down time in a bubble around you, allowing you (and anyone else nearby) to remain in "realtime") while the world around you slows to a halt! Anti-mutant crusaders, giant robots and criminals with jet packs are nothing compared to the drama you've had to face living in a house with eight other super-powered teenagers. On top of that you've got to deal with homework, and even though you can freeze time you still can't help being late for class.

Practice sessions in the Danger Room have improved your control over the tachyon field - but as you recently learned, even your formidible power has limits! When Professor Xavier and the senior staff were captured by the mutant terrorist Magneto, you and the other students flew to New York City and engaged the Brotherhood of Mutants directly - an event that nearly led to your death*!

Two weeks have passed since that night, and with the aid of the Mansion's amazing medical equipment and a staff full of mutants you've made a complete recovery - just in time for finals!

The warm air buzzes with new life and the promise of summer just days away, but for now it remains tantalizingly beyond your reach! As you pull your attention from the idyllic scene outside your room and back to your science paper, you glance at the clocks on the desk next to you. The two out-of-sync clocks are there to practice your power, but according to the accurate one you've only got one hour before it's due!

The material is nothing you don't already know, but Dr. McCoy hinted that if you could knock his proverbial blue-furred socks off he'd see about getting you a summer job with Dr. Richards of the Fantastic Four! Exhaling one last sigh, you start in on the final plunge...

Time to shine! Roll a d100 to see how well you pull this off! To roll, put noko dice 1d100 in the email field. Highest of three rolls determines it!

"Interesting. Mmm-hmm, and the - oh my stars, Aino, you've really outdone yourself," Dr. McCoy says as he skims over your paper. "I'll have to give this a read-through over dinner, but I wouldn't worry about your grade in my class."

"Really, just amazing," he says, flipping the page and losing himself in it again.

After another moment of watching him read you take your leave with his absent-minded blessing and track down Sam and Megan in the game room, finding them engaged in a training session of their own as Sam schools Megan across the patched Foosball table!

"Hey, you hand in your paper yet?" Sam asks. "I think I got like a B. A solid B. Good enough to pass!" she shouts, gaining another point on her hapless opponent.

"That's it, I quit." Megan states, throwing up her hands. "This game and I do not get along," she huffs as she drops onto the couch. "So what are you guys going to do for your break? Starting tomorrow we've got two weeks before the summer session starts."

"I think my mom is taking us to Disney World," Sam says. "Maybe you could all come with?" she asks hopefully. "Anyway, chief," she asks you. "You wanna go shopping with me in Salem Center today? I've gotta pick out a dress for my cousin's wedding."

"You think we should see if anyone else wants to go along?" Sam asks, sitting on your bed as she watches you dig through clothes on the floor for money. "I mean, Megan should go for that mental health stuff the Professor is always talking about, right? 'Cause she needs to get used to being around lots of people again. And if we take Mary Ann we've gotta take Luke too. I think Clarissa went out canoeing with the boys, but I guess Mary Ann and Luke could see if they can talk to them."

"Shut up!" she shrieks, giggling with embarrassment and bopping you with a stray T-shirt as she falls off the bed.

"Forty-five dollars and thirty-*seven* cents!" she corrects you, holding up a penny discovered under a pair of shoes during her collision with the floor. As she floats off the ground to a standing position she flicks it at you and says "I'll go see what Omni says about the macho crowd while you get dressed."

"Shut up!" she laughs, slamming the door as you drop Noah's name again.

Fifteen minutes later you bound down the stairs, dressed for the unseasonably warm weather. "Bad news, chief," Sam says. "Clarissa and the other boys wanna stay out here, so it's just you, me, Megan, and Mary Ann."

    "And Luke, obviously," she adds.

The ride into Salem Center is quiet, aside from the van's air conditioning, Ms. Grey's Best of Peter Gabriel CD and the peals of laughter from the four/five teenagers in the back.

"Ugh, mall shopping," Sam says as the side of the van slides open, disgorging you all into the Westchester Mall parking lot.

"Huh? Oh, yeah," Sam says. "I could go for some pre-shopping ice cream, I guess. Are you gonna be super bored?" Sam asks Luke, looking at him even though she knows she's really talking to both of them at once.

"No, it's OK," Luke says while Mary Ann mouths the words along with him. "Mary Ann likes it, so I can just go along with it, and then I like it too." It sounds almost odd hearing only one of their voices at a time, after getting so used to hearing them speak as one.

"You think we should try the cheap stores and work our way up, or start at Bloomingdale's and end up at K-Mart?" Sam asks you.

"...and *she* will have the Triple-Chocolate Explosion," Sam interrupts Megan, ordering for her. "Trust me."

As Ms. Grey examines the novelty jewelry at a kiosk on the other side of the food court the five of you slide along the length of the freezer-counter to the register. "Hey, look," Megan says, whispering. "I think that guy's homeless."

Your attention is drawn to a figure slouched in one of the benches wearing a faded green army coat and a stocking cap indoors despite the balmy weather outside. Turned facing the wall away from you, he sits as motionless as the cup of water on the table next to him

<<Should we give him some money?>> Omni asks you telepathically.

"No!" Megan thinks, Omni's telepathic power enabling you all to hear each other. "That's rude!"

"No, it means you're suckers," Sam thinks, adding a mental image of a crowded New York street to her thought.

"Double cone, double cone, banana split, and triple chocolate, order up!" the cashier says, breaking your shared mental communication.

"Can you like, read his mind and see if he really needs money?" Sam whispers to Omni.

<<Looking in peoples' minds isn't something we liked doing when we couldn't control it, Sam.>> Luke and Mary Ann reply, to everyone in the group. <<Now that we can control it, the Professor says we should never do it without asking.>>

"I didn't freak out, I've just never seen a homeless person before!" Megan protests.

For an hour or more you and your friends cavort around the dress section, creating piles of worn dresses for the attendants to clean up, while Ms. Grey endures withering looks that the rest of you pretend not to notice. Free of schoolwork and all mutant-related conflicts for the first time in a month or more, it's nice to just be normal, at least for a little while.

After the rain of polyester, plaid, and shoulder pads has ended, you're left with messed-up hair, a sore spot where you stepped on a pin barefoot, and a pile of totally unwearable dresses.

"Well, I found one maybe-dress, but I don't wanna put up with those ladies giving me the stink-eye if I ask them to put it on hold. It stinks that they don't have that in your size," Sam says as you collectively give up and head out the doors for J.C. Penney, leaving a slew of dresses and angry department store workers in your wake. "That red tie with the black dress makes it totally vintage."

"Hey, it's your boyfriend again," Sam says, nudging Megan as she sees that man leaving the food court with a mall cop trailing behind him.

"Oh wow, that is super-cute," Sam says when you emerge from the dressing room.

"It's a very nice dress suit, Aino," Ms. Grey agrees. "Very professional."

"I don't think this fits me very well," Megan says, stepping out of another dressing room stall and standing awkwardly in a knee-length dress. "It's really short."

Sam wolf-whistles at her, but a moment later Luke interjects. "I like it," he says quietly.

"Luke, you dog!" Sam kicks her foot up, pretending to kick him while everyone shares a grin. "OK, I got my dress. You taking that suit and the white dress?" she asks you, gesturing at the cloth draped over your dressing-room door. The tag that dangles off it reads $35.99, which means you can only afford one of the two, but not both.

"You *have* that dress, Sam," Ms. Grey corrects her.

"Yeah, 'swhat I said," she replies.

"We have to go to the bathroom," Omni says.

"What, you guys share a bladder now?" Sam asks. "Yo, chief! We done here or you wanna go to K-Mart?"

"That's not an easy question to answer, Aino," Ms. Grey says, thinking about your statement of the homeless dilemma. "Sometimes people just need a hand up. Other times, people live like they do because they want to, or because their circumstances mean they *have* to. It might be simply enabling him, or it might change his life."

"But if you do give him anything," she says, unclasping her spaghetti-strap purse. "I'll pitch in as well."

Ask and you shall receive, reader! There's a fair-to-middling chance that we'll get at least one more issue out this week, before we move up four hours to a later timeslot. As for her recovery stint, she might have caught up on homework, but that final paper was a home run out of the blue! Aino's mutant abilities have become more instinctive, giving her the chance to use them without fatiguing herself as quickly and making it easier for her to call on them in stressful situations. As for what happened elsewhere, you'll have to stay tuned!
