    I posted this topic in /lit/ but I think it's more than appropriate to post it here too:

    This isn't a religious debate thread, so don't worry. (And please don't make it one.)

    I just need to tap into the knowledge of those who have read and/or studied the bible. See, I play Shadowrun with a group of guys and during the session today I decided to give my character a religious zealot flavor. It went over with the group really well.

    I'm going to use religion as a platform to create an army that I will use to topple the syndicate bosses that the GM has created.

    So what I need are short bible quotes that make good one-liners during a fight, and I also need some slightly lengthier quotes that I can use to explain my motivation of rebellion religiously to anyone who asks, and also things to say to convince people (People who are often gang members or drug addicts) to join my cause.

    I've only read the bible up into the first book of Samuel, and that was a long time ago, so I really don't remember much.

    You help will be much appreciated.

    And normally I would try to cut of the more recognizable valley of the shadow of death part, and go with "I fear no evil: for thou [art] with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." except, like most gaming groups, mine is too immature not to break out into a discussion of penises right then and there.

    Well, pretty much everything Jesus said about justice for the poor is great fodder for this. Luke 4:17-21 is thus:

    17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

    That's a pretty huge step there. "Hey, I'm here to save people." Almost EVERYTHING in Matthew 6-7, which is kind of a collection of a lot of His teachings, was about being good to people around you, a lot to the poor. Don't forget the entire book of Luke, which has been called the social justice Gospel, and has Jesus turning conventional concepts of poverty and race on their heads (The Good Samaritan? For cultural context, imagine that the Jew bleeding in the road was a white guy in 1820's South, the guys passing him were rich dudes and preachers, and the guy saving him was black). Paul's also got some great stuff on the rebellion against the sin nature of the world in Ephesians.

    If it has something to do with "Zealots", you should avoid christian (new testamental) quotes - Zealots were fundamental Jews.

    So you should concentrate on old testament. I hope the names work for english as well es for German...
    - 3. Mose (Levitikus) has lots of (somethimes short, sometimes weird) laws, maybe you find someting in here.
    - Josua and following tells the story of the military uprise of Irsael, so you might find something bloody/fundamental in here although it is kinda prosaic (and perhaps with few short quotable one-liners).
    - Psalms: Contain also Curses and stuff.
    - Proverbs: Consists ONLY of short slogans.
    - Some Prophets took very hard words against their "enemys", but too lazy to look them all through.

    Sorry for bad english.

    My GM has been causing special things to happen to me. It's happened twice so far. My character has cyber limbs, and in the first session my final blow on a guy caused me to "Feel as though I had a real arm" again, and today my arms sprouted mysterious vents that vent electric arcs, and I was the only one able to penetrate the enemies magical shield, but only through use of hand to hand combat.

    I'll do what I can, but 4chan is a fickle thing as it's composed of many people who are on at different times. If I post my story several weeks from now, I may just get a "Nobody cares".

    But I'll tell you what, since you're so interested give me your e-mail and I'll send you the story as soon as it happens.

    As a kid I was taken to church every Sunday and all that. After having a bit of a vocal secular rebellious phase in my teens, I've mellowed out and think about this kind of thing a fair bit. I hope that I can give a bit of an insight to some more abstract reasons for a religious rebellion and evangelical points. In a way I'm sort of struggling with the whole religion idea personally but that's beside the point...

    Forgive the capitalisation here... it's kinda necessary to make implications or emphasis.

    Reasons for Evangelical Preaching:
    - God tells you to preach The Word. (there are heaps of passages that say this, try google?)
    - "I am right" or "God is right" or "I am Right" or "God is Right". These are just an act of faith. I don't think there is much more to it than that.
    - Love. Having Faith in God is comforting etc. You want to share His Love with others.
    - Hate. (Luke 14:26 New International Version: If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.). What this /can/ mean to someone is that, by preaching the Word to them, the preacher has doomed them to live up to Christ's standards. If they had never heard of Our Baby Jesus then they would have to live up to the Bible's laws. Other versions of the Bible have slightly different wordings that change the meaning.

    Personally I think that last one is a very interesting one. The person can be greatly conflicted by preaching, because living up to Christ's standards is only barely possible or impossible. It's not meant to be easy, everyone is meant to constantly have their faith tested.

    Cont.

    i remember this phrase that was written on a 12 or 13 century eastern church bible, it is not a bible verse, i think, it was simply written on the cover by whoever produced that bible
    i can only paraphrase it but it went something like this;

    "with You we destroy our enemies
    in Your name we crush those who hate us"

    i cant remember the source, i read it while browsing trough some book store, in some history book about religion, but it just stuck with me, on account of how christian it sounds, even la vey couldnt have said it better

    (This is my interpretation of it, other's will vary greatly, but the following is how I read the situation) Jesus believed that he would be resurrected after he was betrayed and then he would sit at the right hand of the Father... so he's running around thinking that it's all chill. But, as he was dying on the cross, he shouts out "Eloi Eloi lama sabachthani" (My God, My God. Why have you forsaken me?). So he's dying here and all of a sudden God removes His presence from Jesus. It's like saying "Go ahead and jump, I'll catch you" to your kid and as your kid is mid air, you run away. Imagine what the kid is thinking!

    Another interesting quote, way up there with the "Eloi" quote, is "I AM".

    The implications are amazing. It's a shout of existence. It's a shout of perfection. And if someone doubts God, then it implies the word that would state the opposite (?). So: "God doesn't love me" "I AM [LOVE]." Yeah, I took an entry level Philosophy course in Uni.

    To me, ignoring all the theological stuff that I can't answer and don't really care about that much, the philosophical questions/implications raised by the bible are just so interesting. It's so, so interesting to see how people respond to it. And how they understand it.

    OP: Colin McCahon. NZ painter. Very interesting if you want to step inside a religious person's head and see what he sees. Sadly, the pictures on the internet are of extremely poor quality. That one I posted about (A Question of Life or Death. (?)) is about 5 foot high and 8 feet in length. It's amazing.

    This is like, my specialty:

    "No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; And every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn"

    "Vengeance is MINE, sayeth the LORD!"

    "With an Ass's jawbone I have made asses of them!
    With an ass's jawbone I have killed thousands of men!"

    Holy, holy, holy
    is the Lord God Almighty,
    who was, and is, and is to come.

    The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.

    For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,
    who accuses them before our God day and night,
    has been hurled down.
    They triumphed over him
    by the blood of the Lamb

    Whoever has ears, let them hear.

    Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.

    “You are just in these judgments, O Holy One,
    you who are and who were;
    for they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets,
    and you have given them blood to drink as they deserve.”

    say to those with fearful hearts,
    “Be strong, do not fear;
    your God will come,
    he will come with vengeance;
    with divine retribution
    he will come to save you.”

    And I will strew your bones on the mountains, and fill the valleys with your blood.
    And I will water the earth with thy stinking blood upon the mountains, and the valleys shall be filled with thee.
    When I snuff you out, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light.
    I will make all the lights of heaven to mourn over thee: and I will cause darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord God, when thy wounded shall fall in the midst of the land, saith the Lord God.
    And hearing of your destruction the kings of faraway nations will worry at it.
    Yes, I will shock many lands, and their kings will be terrified at your fate. They will shudder in fear for their lives as I brandish my sword before them on the day of your fall.
