So, since /tg/'s foaming at the mouth over GW's latest price hike, I thought I'd take the time to introduce a little something I've been working on.
Instead of buying minis for extortionist prices or dealing with the hassle and cost of casting your own, why not make a wargame using LEGOs?

Following with what I've got so far, pic unrelated of course.

There already is one - it's called Brikwars, IIRC.

Units are almost all created using your standard lego bricks: 1x2s, 2x3s, 2x2s, and 2x4s. Unit costs and stats are measured in "pips", the little bumps used in measuring brick size.
    Basic stats/mechanics:
    -Unit stats-
HP: how much damage it can take.
Armour: damage prevented from each attack.
Speed: number of "pips" moved per half action.
    -Weapon stats-
Acc: measured in x/6, with a maximum of 5. If you roll the number or lower on a d6, you hit.
Dmg: damage dealt if the weapon hits.
Rng: weapon range in "pips". Flying units can only be hit by units with a range higher than their speed.

    Combat:
Each unit has 2 half-actions per turn to use on the following actions:
    (Half)-Move SPD "pips".
(Half)-Fire all weapons once, only usable once per turn.
(Half)-Defend, gain +1 Arm till your next turn.

I care not for the brikwars, but do post more if there's Rei involved.

I personally think /tg/ should get to scratch-building a completely new wargame of it's own.

Just looked it over, not really my style. For a game called "brikwars" there's a disturbing lack of bricks.
    To continue:

There are currently 2 Factions so far: the Kazka Empire which has ruled for generations, and the Tirmac rebellion which opposes them. Currently, the Kazka Empire is a massive superpower with representatives and member-nations across the globe forced to pay tribute.
The Tirmac were originally a group of slaves who took their mining and construction mechs to fight against the Empire.

The Kazka Empire favors large numbers of compact units that can be unleashed in waves while the Tirmac have fewer options and forces but pack a greater punch per unit.

Why make a wargame when you can just proxy a wargame with lego and have fun models and hopefully a balanced and well-thought-out system.

However, if you want to do the legowork go for it.

There are 4 kinds of SPD:

Ground: Cannot move through allied or enemy units, affected by terrain.
Tracked: Cannot move through allied or enemy units, unaffected by terrain.
Phasing: Can move through allied or enemy units, affected by terrain.
Flying: Can move through allied or enemy units, unaffected by terrain, can only be hit by units with RNG equal to or greater than their SPD.

All attacks dealing at least 1 DMG deal 1 DMG if the target's ARM is equal to or greater than the attacking weapon's DMG.

Unit Layout (#Pips) [LxWxH needed in transports]
    HP: .ARM: .SPD: .
    ACC: .DMG: .RNG: .
    Special: Additional abilities here.

    Kazka Units:

    Mechanized Infantry (24P) [3x4x5]
    HP: 1. ARM: 0. SPD: 2(Ground).
    ACC: 1/6. DMG: 1. RNG: 4.
    ACC: 1/6. DMG: 1. RNG: 4.
Special: Storage Mode (2 Half Actions)
May switch between storage mode and operational mode. While in storage units count as only 3/4th of their normal point cost and cannot act.
While in storage mode: size is [3x4x3]

ALT: Instead of gaining a reduced size and point value from storage mode, the Mechanized Infantry may instead gain SPD: 1 (FLY).

The Mechanized Infantry are the weakest Kazka forces, though deadly in large numbers. They can compact themselves easily for easier transport. Many an army has lost underestimating these invaluable forces.

    Scout Mech (48P) [5x6x3]
    HP: 5. ARM: 2. SPD: 10(Ground).
    ACC: 2/6. DMG: 4. RNG: 0.
Special: Storage Mode (2 Half Actions)
May switch between storage mode and operational mode. While in storage units count as only 3/4th of their normal point cost and cannot act.
While in storage mode: size is [6x6x2]

ALT: Instead of gaining a reduced size and point value from storage mode, the Scout Mech may instead gain SPD: 2(FLY).

The Scout Mech is a standard unit of the Kazka Empire, often deployed in groups of 3 or more they make short work of most other lightweight mechs.

    Assault Mech (64P) [5x6x4]
    HP: 9. ARM: 4. SPD: 7(Ground).
    ACC: 2/6. DMG: 4. RNG: 0.
Special: Storage Mode (2 Half Actions)
May switch between storage mode and operational mode. While in storage units count as only 3/4th of their normal point cost and cannot act.
While in storage mode: size is [6x6x3]

The Assault Mech is seen as an improvement over the Scout Mech in being able to take greater punishment than its lightweight counterpart, though at decreased speed and maneuverability. However, it shares the same weaknesses to the legs.

    Elite Mech (80P) [6x8x4]
    HP: 10. ARM: 5. SPD: 8(Ground).
    ACC: 2/6. DMG: 6. RNG: 0.
    ACC: 2/6. DMG: 6. RNG: 0.

Larger and more impressive than the Assault Mech, the Elite Mech boasts even more powerful armor, greater firepower, and a higher movement speed at the cost of their storage mode.

    Screamer (88P) [8x10x3]
    HP: 8. ARM: 0. SPD: 4(FLY).
    ACC: 1/6. DMG: 6. RNG: 19.
Special: Storage Mode (2 Half Actions)
May switch between storage mode and operational mode. While in storage units count as only 3/4th of their normal point cost and cannot act.
While in storage mode: size is [6x6x3]

The Screamer is a premier air unit of the Kazka Empire. Capable of firing long range projectile, they are traditionally used for bombing runs.

Because LEGOs are fuckexpensive too. Always have been, and still are, which is weird considering they've been around since forever and have perfected their method of making bricks, and their patent on their bricks ran out several years ago, which means they actually have some sort of competition now (which are buttfuck-expensive too, and Megabloks do not count).

Buying stuff from Bricklink or whatever can be cheaper, depending on what you're looking for.

And I'm sure many of us still have a bucket of bricks around from when we were kids.

    Tirmac Faction:

    Power Builder (66P) [4x8x5]

    ACC: 1/6. DMG: 8. RNG: 0.
    ACC: 1/6. DMG: 8. RNG: 0.

Built from mechs used in hazardous contruction sites and high pressure areas, these units are more durable and pack more of a punch than comparable Kazka units, but suffer from weak plating and are harder to control.

    Turtle Tank (48P) [6x6x3]
    HP: 6. ARM: 1. SPD: 2(Tracked)
    ACC: 3/6. DMG: 5. RNG: 10.

May switch between storage mode and operational mode. While in storage units count as only 3/4th of their normal point cost and cannot act.
While in storage mode: size is [4x6x3]

The Turtle Tank is named for its similarity in appearance to the extinct species of reptile and amphibious movement, albeit at low speed. The first Tirmac original design, they are efficient and powerful, so long as they can stay within range.

    Wyrm Tank (220P) [16x4x3]
    HP: 40. ARM: 8. SPD: 6(Tracked)
    ACC: 5/6. DMG: 20. RNG: 20.
Special: Piercing. Attacks hit all units within range, allied or enemy.

They Wyrm Tank is a true marvel of engineering. A huge slab of metal wrapped around a high yield mining laser, the Wyrm Tank is a nightmare on the battlefield capable of eliminating 6 Mechanized Infantry in a single strike.

Shit, I have 3 huge plastic bins full of them, mostly the Star Wars ones from 1999-2001. Owned all of the first line but the very first Millenium Falcon.

The thing is, I never knew just how expensive they were until now. They used to cost roughly 10% of their parts count, i.e. $20-25 for a 250-piece kit (Star Wars did, at least). Now it's more like $30-35.

Hmm, I guess prices are pretty bad now, and I bet licensed themes like Star Wars or Harry Potter probably get a bit of a price nudge on top of that because they're expected to be more popular.

Mechs are great, but what about lower tech/fantasy? I've got all these axes and swords, nautical fellows sporting eye-patches, and a dragon or two crying to be put to use.

Also would there be a standard template, or is it just "build something of the proper size and call it a whatever".

I feel that Piercing may have some issues, but I'd have to think about it for a bit.

It's mostly futuristic since mechs are pretty easy to build out of your standard bricks, though 3rd faction could be some future-primitive type thing. Here's my current formula:

Each stat or ability costs a certain number of Pips.

    -Unit Stats-
    HP: 1HP = 2 Pips.
    ARM: 1ARM = 4 Pips.
    SPD(Ground): 1SPD = 1 Pip.
    SPD(Tracked): 1SPD = 2 Pips.
    SPD(Phasing): 1SPD = 2 Pips.
    SPD(Flying): 1SPD = 4 Pips.

Units can have any number of weapons, stats for each weapon on a unit are purchased separately
    -Weapon Stats-
    DMG: 1DMG = 2 Pips
    ACC(Max 5): 1ACC = 2 Pips
    RNG: 1RNG = 1 Pip.

    Special:
Storage mode: 1/6th of total Pips.
Piercing: Weapons with Piercing cost x3 Pips.
Dodge: 16 Pips, max 5. Roll a d6 if an attack hits, if the attacked unit's Dodge is equal to or less than the roll that attack does nothing.

And yeah, I rely almost entirely on legos I still have from when I was a kid, and random crazy "Oh shit, that looks awesome" purchases since then.

Nice thing about LEGO bricks is they are (1) infinitely reusable (they stick well enough that they won't fall apart, but they aren't so sticky that you can't take a creation apart again -- good luck doing that with a Space Marine figure) and (2) extremely durable (I've got some bricks that are 26 years old, and aside from a little fading, they're just as good as the day they were bought).

If you are looking for LEGO bricks on the cheap, look for garage sales (especially if there are families with children going to college). EBay (and, as has been said, Bricklink) may also be your friend in this endeavor. I once found a bundle of 3 old (1998) sets, ended up buying them for less than their original MSRP (when you can usually expect a mark-up of ~200%).

Here is a big list of brick wargames if BrikWars isn't your cup of tea: http://www.brikwars.com/wargames.htm
