I've been playing around with a Tojo Guard list, it's mostly fluffy and not greatly competitive, but I have had some very lolworthy moments.

The best, so far, was my power sword "Gaijin Commissar" that usually runs with my infantry blob.

Was playing against a Tyranid drop list and one of his mortar bloodied carnifexes managed to get a charge on the blob. He was remarking how dumb it was that I would take power swords over powerfists. For the most part, I agreed with him.

The carnifex ripped and teared a few guardsmen and then it was my turn.

The Commissar responded first, representing the best warrior of the blob taking this challenge. Both swings hit, with 6's to wound, slaying the monster. I didn't even need to roll for my 25 other guys.

Ok, so I have a few things.

First off, unless anyone objects, Mifune Toshiro is chapter master.

Second off, all the faggots in thread 4, with their Spess Mehreen raep fantasies, gtfo back to /b/.

Third, what else is there to do with this? There's fluff to finish, and we're going to need to spend time making these guys not just another mehreens armay, but, really, are we going to go that extra mile? I know I will, and I know a handful of people who are interested, but we should get some community feedback first.

Can someone make a DoW1-compatible version of the chapter badge? It's in the 4th thread, I think.

A few buddies and I got writing some crunchy bits on this, and we had a 'fuck it' moment.

We decided, with all the 'unknown sector/segmentum obscurus' stuff flying around, we'd just go non-codex.

Here's what we came up with: Marine list gets gimped. No tanks, no jump infantry, termies restricted, landspeeders modified.

Guard-type unites added as troops. Restricted versions of infantry battalions (pretty much conscripts) are a troop choice. Some guard-type tanks and artillery allowed as support.

Also, focus put on cavalry, namely mounted marines.

Army setup goes pretty much: Small, elite, fast mounted marines, some marines troops behind them, and the mass of guardsmen following behind them. Some guard-type support behind that.

The structure goes: Mounted generals/damiyo, Armored samurai, and the masses of peasants that made up the army behind them.

The fluff behind this: The original chapter was sent to a small, obscure, system that hadn't been paying tithes for years. Upon arriving, they find a heretical system that stretched down from the governor to top millitary officials. The chapter master basically went "fuck this, I'm taking over," and then he and his chapter set about entrenching themselves in the system.

Each company rules a world (or so,) with a hereditary system flowing down bloodlines where the eldest son is tested to be a Marine, becomes a marine, his younger sibling carries the family name and honor, and then, his eldest son takes the tests. For company commanders, they maintain political control over their families while marines, but day-to-day politics are controlled by their younger sibling.
It's a pretty great departure from what this started as, and it needs an ass-ton of help to get fleshed out, but, I think, it could be non-sparkle-snowflake, balanced, and far more interesting than another codex marines reskin.

    >>14981376
That sort of heavily conflicts with what we've already established, though.
They're supposed to be a bike-heavy, fairly mobile group, so limiting vehicle choices is a no-no. And no jump infantry? It would be more fitting for there to be tons of infantry flying into the fray shouting, "BANZAAAAIII!"

I'm going back to, "samurai, not Jap."

The whole point of this is that it's an infantry-based list, and, I feel, taking out a lot of unit options would make sense. I can't see these guys shoving units into rhinos or Landraiders. If anything, they should get tanks but not transports.

Yes, it contradicts some of what we have, but, really, what we have is easy as hell to rewrite to fit this. I wanted to make this an army that fits with sengoku-era tactics, not some amalgamation of everything people remember or can think of from Japanese history.

Plus, we've got enough fucking homebrew codex marines chapters. If we've got an idea that could be something different, we should make it different. If people think they feel too speshal snawflaek, we balance them at a lower point on the curve. We aren't out to make the next tournament best pick, we want something flavorful that's fun to think about and play.

    >>14981524
Yeah, but like I said earlier. Space marines first, samurai second.
I'm sorry, but I think straying so drastically far from marine tactics just to make them more samurai-like is a bit much.

    >> Anonymous 05/19/11(Thu)15:12 No.14981650
    >>14981568
Yeah, see, I'm thinking less a Space Marine list, more a list for the sector as a whole. Meaning, both marines and guard.

Which means heavy list gimping on both ends, so you don't end up with someone building a best-of-both-world army.

As I said, these guys are looking underpowered, and that's intentional. I don't want a special snowflake army, I want something that fits the idea of feudal samurai marines. This means it's probably non-codex, organized strangely, and with tactics that play completely unlike what a normal mehreen would play.

I feel building something entirely new would be more fun than just another /tg/ marine chapter, this time soy flavored. But, if people think I'm a flaming retard running with a sack of shit, I'll stop it and focus on doing something else.

Guy, intentionally making a homebrew chapter functionally weak because you are worried about the braying of jackasses is silly.
Even then, the weapons that samurai used most often was mounted cavalry (early Sengoku and prior) and rifle formations (during Sengoku and afterward).
    >> Anonymous 05/19/11(Thu)15:21 No.14981786
Meh, eff tradition. I like this new concept, use it in an APOC setting. One thing we should cover then is house loyalty, well clan loyalty. Each space marine clan (about 10-60) would swear loyalty to the Shogun (chapter master.) We could easily handle scouts as Ronin, fighting for ammunition, food, and repairs. There could even be clan feuds. If we go this route, i would say to keep the existing fluff as intact as possible, but have had them almost carve out a mini empire like the ultramarines...but with far less marines and much more IG. One other suggestion, we have a lot of new TG chapters. Lets have them interact a bit. I suggest either those dudes who are all "yay purity" forgot the name, or even the Astral Jaws. Oh yeah, space marines do fall to chaos, how do the Rising Sons handle this? Because check this out. nurgle. nurgle samurai marines get hunted down, captured. ritualistically get disemboweled (seppuku), escape, and live on. continue the tradition with new "recruits" now we got some enemies to fight.
    >> Anonymous 05/19/11(Thu)15:21 No.14981789
    >>14981650
I don't think you're a flaming retard running with sack of shit, I just think you don't quite understand what our original intention is.
We aren't going to strictly feudal samurai. It actually IS supposed to be an amalgamation of parts of Japanese history and culture.
They do have the samurai aspect as a major factor, but it isn't so dominant that they absolutely have to mimic every aspect of samurai warfare to a T. We actually almost went down this road with horses and bolt-bows before we realized how stupid we were getting and that we were making SPACE MARINES and not just space-faring samurai. We've done as much as we can to accommodate the samurai aspect of the Rising Sons, but if we tweak it too much, we'll end up something flamboyant special-snowflake and unlike the actual Adeptus Astartes. If you feel that it's just making them another boring old space marine chapter, so be it.

hey post #86 here. Sounds good, I'd be down for a collaboration. My writing is not always rock solid, but the ideas that come out usually are. Didn't mean to duplicate or attempt to overwrite ideas. But it would be cool to work the Ronin in there, if not as scouts, then perhaps as marines that just didn't quite fit into the clan life. Maybe as devastators. got a lot of ideas, pick and choose em, or don't at all. I do want to see these guys blossom into something amazing though.

I play mostly with infantry and low tech weapons, the infantry are closer to WWII soldiers, while the command units, HQ choices, sergeants, and commissars are ALL BUSHIDO, ALL THE TIME types with power swords everywhere. I also use camo cloaks alot. While not very samurai like, I usually counts as it to represent their badasssery and dedication to dying honorably in cc.

I love fielding Rough Riders to, they always get the most terrible of honorable deaths.

The only armor I take is my Leman Russ Anhilator with Pask, though I sometimes trade out for a Hydra if I need points. It's representative of Japan's more lightly armed, less common tank usage.

And then there are the Plasmacannon Sentinels, I just love using those.

792.M41 – Pacification of Tallo II

The second and fifth companies, along with numerous Imperial Guard regiments, launched an invasion of the world of Tallo II, which had announced its secession and annexation into the Tau Empire. A brutal campaign followed, with high casualties on both Imperial and Tau sides. Brother Akechi Mitsuhide is awarded rank of sergeant due to his leadership in not only taking control of his squadron after his sergeant was killed, but leading them in single-handedly liberating the Planetary Governor's Palace.

    997.M41 - Zeist Campaign

A full company of Rising Son space marines participated in the Zeist campaign against the Tau, joining a number of fellow chapters under the command of Captain Sicarius of the Ultramarines. Joined by Iron Lords, Sable Swords and Ultramarines, the Rising Sons participated in the liberation of Galtara, Marcutor and Pendragon V. The chapter later participated in the unified assault to liberate Augura.

I would be tempted to play 40K for this army alone. You fixed my two biggest complaints - Silly looking faces, and body structures that make them look like Buzz Lightyear toys more than miniatures.

But can you fix the tanks, that's the question.
