Ain't really much to say. I was staying back sniping shit out with my Protectors, which were hugging a Messenger like a fat kid on cake for dat column bonus. Guy is playing Imperium (Spess Mehreens), says I'm too scared to get near him. Well, he's more or less right. I'd be a fool to get near him. Fuck bombardment cannons.

So I decide to shoot some trashmob escorts at him. From my Custodian I launch three Warden Gunships, and begin moving them towards him. He gets furious, not only because at this point I'm taunting him, but he claims that since he can't launch escorts from his ships, I must be cheating. He was just mad.

Dont play this for several reasons.

    1. Games are wonky as shit and take forever and day to do anything.

    2. Eldar are the best at everything.. you don't even need to take capital ships.

    3. Hasn't gotten any updates in years.

to be fair eldar capital ships are very naff, escorts are what makes them so powerful, no one can compete with chaos for long range firepower and imperial missile spam far exceeds almost any other army in effective weapons

Sure sounds like someone who's never played Gothic; or perhaps an attention-deficit player. Mass gun batteries on Eldar and they drop like anything else.

As for updates, the game has been updated by Specialist games every year with additional errata. Various articles have added a lot for different races. Best of all, the rules are available free.

In fact, the game is plenty playable with paper proxies, assuming you have correctly sized bases - about 25mm diameter for frigates and cruisers, and 50mm diameter for battleships.

If anything I find BFG the best of the Games Workshop games; it's not filled with over-preferential treatment of one given faction, updates are slow and measured, power creep is very minimal, the game encourages you to homebrew your own rules solutions, and it's playable at a very low cost.

i was wondering if someone would help me with a list. i'm just thinking about starting the game and thought this might be good:

    Emperor
    Mars
    Lunar 2x
    Dominator

    >>15019546

I'm no Gothic Sector Admiral but this seems like a good start. Doubling up on Lunars is a good thing - they are the core of the Imperial battlefleet. Remember that Imperial ships work best in mutually supportive pairs.

Opinions are divided on the Mars. I've heard some opinions that it tries to do too many things at the same time and you are better off specializing with the points.

You may want to consider an escort squad - sure, they are fragile, but they are quick and if you hold them for the right moment their firepower can be devastating.

12 launch bays at 1500 is imo a little overkill

paired lunars are good, i'd skip on the dominator without a gothic to pair with it.

where da escorts at. you're not chaos - your cruisers are slow and your escorts aren't trash. Chances are a squadron of swords and/or a squadron of cobras will serve you well.

    or a dauntless

I play nids and chaos at 1500pts. Chaos is the traditional Desolator, 2x Devastation, 2x Carnage, 2x Acheron.
For nids i run a pair of 8 launch bays and 8 torps hive ships, with 24 pyro-acid escort drones. 96 strength of weapons batteries for 480 points. Sprinkle in torpedo kraken or cruisers to bump the ordinance level.

Easy enough to do. My only problem with it is the same problem I have with any SM fleet: The one or two battle barges and one to four strike cruisers you'll put into a 2k point fleet represents pretty much the entire damn chapter, which causes fluff headaches for me.

Hey, I'm just starting Battlefleet Gothic and I have a question. I've always been confused at how the ordinance fighters and bombers work when under attack by other fighters and bombers.

Lets say a wave 0f 3 chaos fighters runs into a wave of 2 Imperial Fighters and 4 bombers. What happens? Is it like a 1 for 1 trade in units or does the chaos player trade 2 of the Imperial fighters and destroy all bombers?

Why would you have a mix of fighters and bombers attack a cruiser instead of just bombers?

I've read the rules many times, but I still stumped. How does this stuff work?
    >> Anonymous 05/23/11(Mon)20:23 No.15028457
I have a chaos list, am I messing up? Just a note, my friends allow me to take things like armed freighters and heavy transport for fluff purposes.

    1 Devastation Class
    1 Acheron
    1 Slaughter Class
    1 Carnage Class
    x3 Infidels
    x3 Idolators
x3 Iconoclasts (used as armed freighters)
    x3 Armed Freighters
    x1 Heavy Transport

I plan to field all the armed freighters in a squadron of 6. Because no one in my gaming group knows a lot about chaos ships, I was going to pretend that my newly added slaughter class was slow and have it hang around with the slow moving freighters. Then, when an enemy ship is crippled and retreating I charge the Slaughter full speed ahead.

    Any pointers?

its a one for one trade off.

As for why you'd add fighters too a bomber wing attacking a ship. Those fighters can perform turret suppression, So you make your bombing run as normal except fighters have to be shot down first. And when your calculating how many attacks you make you get +1 per suppressing fighter up too the number of turrets the ship has.
so a wave of 2fighters and 2 bombers attacking a ship with 2 turrets would make (D6-2)+(D6-2)+2 attacks.
    >> Anonymous 05/23/11(Mon)21:16 No.15029004
I have a ship, her name is the Edmund Fitzgerald. She is a Lunar class: in every game I have ever played, she has been at least crippled and on fire, and frequently hulked - but she has made a kill every single time, and I've always recovered her.
Then there's my brother's Murder class - in our third game, by the last turn, it had the following crits:
    On fire
    On fire
    Thrusters
    Prow weapons
    On fire
He named it the "Frederich Quicksilver", and gave it the Mark of Slaanesh.

    >>Emperor
Best Imp ship, hands down. On the other hand, it clashes badly with your Mars. Also, the model's a complete whore to put together (the rear galleries and the connecting tab in the master mold warped)
There's a couple things you might want to try out instead of this configuration:
    1) Keep the Mars: swap the Emp for an Armageddon (rolls with one of your Lunars) and the other Lunar for a Gothic, squadroned with the Dominator.
use your remaining points for Swords/Cobras.
    Alternately
    2) Dominator and Mars with Nova cannon hang back and support unitl sq'n 2 hits, then use their lances and point-blank Nova cannon shots to clean up the wounded.
Meanwhile, your 2 Lunars run up in the enemy's shit flanking the Emperor, covered by their own torps and the Emp's attack waves. Mix it up and use your broadsides like Nelson: fuck your rear, the support squadron has it covered.
    >> Anonymous 05/23/11(Mon)21:56 No.15029449
Oh, and some tips for each fleet:
Imps: all of your prow weapons are ordnance, and awesome. Keep at least a fighter screen around to cover the torp waves. Your greatest strength is your broadsides, and you can split them.
Also, Dauntless-class Light Cruisers are one of the most combat-resilient ships ever made for the game, rivalling Necrons point-for-point.
Your ships work best in packs; don't be afraid to roll for Reload while you come about and snap-shot torps into enemies, or hold fire until you're inside 30cm with your second salvo.
Swords are as tiny gods against Eldar.

    Chaos:
Individually, your ships are excellent. Use them in ad-hoc wolf-packs, and don't squad them unless you have to. Their prow weapons are usually lances with excellent range: take advantage of this with 2-3 waves, sending in a heavy battery boat or two to lead the charge (Repulsives, Carnages, battleships, etc) backed up by Murders and heavy cruisers, who snipe through the blast markers with lances. the 60cm guns on your heavies give you at least 2 turns of slashing before the brawl starts, and that can be decisive. Your ordnance sucks shit. Sorry. Infidels are good for breaking up torp waves (fire small salvoes into waves to pick off fighters - even one destroys an entire wave of torps or fighters)

Necrons: don't take anything with less than 8 HP. disengage after you kill 2 models. Win the game. It's that simple. This is why everyone hates them.
    >> Anonymous 05/23/11(Mon)22:03 No.15029530
Orks: RAMMING SPEED. YOURS IS THE PROW THAT WILL PEIRCE EVERYFUCKINGTHING.
Also, Heavy Gunz and hilarious ships.

    Tyranids:
No-one will ever out-ord you, not even Tau.
No-one will ever do less damage with Ordnance, not even Chaos.
Krakens are excellent, but have no models. I use modified Tyranid weapons.
Other than that, I haven't actually played with or against them much; I'll leave that to another anon. Same goes for Tau.

Dark Eldar: Allegedly flexible, wind up feeling like sneakier Imps with no broadsides, just L/F/R weapons.

Tau: Holy shit bombers. Maneuvering torpedoes. Overpriced, fragile battleships. Absolutely deadly in the front arc, shit broadsides; they play a lot like Imps with a deathwish.

Eldar: Escorts are excellent, and Pulse Lances are vile abominations. Die like whores to gunnery escorts, but their maneuverability makes them almost impossible for several fleets to catch (Orks, in particular), so just ball up and wait for someone to fuck up, then rape. Also, their ordnance is rare but appallingly powerful

3 "Recommissioned Escorts" (Infidels in Imp colors, for my RTs)
2 Tholian Rubies I use as Xenos Escorts
8 old Space Fleet ships (Goliaths and Carracks, nostly) I use as Heavy Transports (FW rules), plus 2 of their HTs
    2 Escort Carriers
    9 Transports of various types.
    1 Grey Knight Strike Cruiser

I'm also building a Cypra-Mundi pattern copy of the Minotaur and 2 more Cypra Dauntlesses, to go with the one RT cruiser that isn't scratchbuilt.

My chaos fleet is nothing special, which is kinda ironic.

If you'll play me with disengaging banned - I'll even accept for a set number of turns AFTER the first shot is fired by either side - or for objectives, you can play Necrons against me. In exchange, I promise not to aim for your light cruisers.

Hell, I've actually had fun running a Convoy Defense/raid as the defender (imp RT fleet) vs. Necrons. It's an entertaining fleet to face when your opponent isn't being a massive douche.

    Imperial Fleet
    Emperor Class
    Retribution class
    6 Gothics
    1 grand cruiser (forget which)
I built the fleet to be split into two because not many people at my store play yet, but as a whole, what do you think? I try and have my grand cruiser and emperor at opposite ends of my fleet to create a fighter screen to take out bombers and torps, and then use my retribution to cut right through the center of their army, and my gothics to hit whatever they can.

Question: How would you combine BFG and Epic and/or 40k into a tournament or campaign format? There was something in a White Dwarf a very, very long time ago but I can't find any particular links.
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)01:07 No.15043906

    What is Space Hulk?

How the 40k game influences the BFG game:
Board set up like a Space Hulk. Two games of a modified Combat Patrol, one as Attacker, one as Defender. Defenders are placed in reserves. Attackers cannot infiltrate. Terrain Feature (a Console) T10 W3 or T4 W2 if in base to base contact, must be destroyed) as a prequel to the BFG games. Winning allows ... a bonus to boarding actions (+ or -) or assigns a Crit Effect on a ship... Really needs a table with Major Victory, Slight Victory, Draw, Slight Loss, Major Loss and subsequent effects.

With BFG effecting games of 40k, Orbital Bombardment is the most obvious, but could instead have extra troops (from reserves) if you've got transports in a particular area of the board at a particular point of time.

What I'd like to see is having teams of three people playing. Your Fleet Commander who plays the BFG games, Special Forces Commander who plays the Combat Patrols and the Army Commander who plays the 2000 point games of 40k.

The three commanders should be discussing plans and aiming for objectives depending on the weaknesses the other commanders have in the subsequent games.

I think that would be really fun in a tournament, but hard to pull off.

    >>15043906
    Seconded. That would be amazing.

Better yet, get three teams for each role, maybe teams of three to five. Nominate one of them the team leader to issue orders to members of team, and have a final warmaster on each side who issues the orders to the sub-commanders. I think they did some Apoc games like that in a WD, but it was only Apoc and not BFG or combat patrol...

Certainly needed it. Orks have almost nothing- Don't even have a battleship in Ships of the Gothic Sector, if I recall correctly. Not to fun to play using the rules on the GW site.

    Huh. Interesting.

Having a game of Apocalypse at the Tourney with each team member using 1000-1750 points of 40k would be pretty cool (because, honestly 40k is the most common).

The Tournament really needs to base around who is playing and what factions are present. Realistically, the "who is on what side" is pretty fluid since everyone hates everyone.

I need to have some experience with BFG and Apoc, but the theory is all there.

"Though the Ministorum maintains no warships or regimental transports, relying on the Imperial Navy for protection from space-borne foes, each Order operates a fleet of transport craft, ranging from single-detachment troopships to high speed corvettes. In lieu of the capability to engage in full-scale fleet actions, the Sororitas' ships are engineered for maximum speed through the warp, allowing the Orders to deploy their troops anywhere in the Imperium. The longest deployment distance, all other factors being equal, is the Eastern Fringe beyond Kar Duniash and Okassis, which the major Orders can reach in eight weeks. However, the small size and purely defensive weaponry of these craft require the Sisterhood to seek assistance from the Imperial Navy in cases where large-scale deployment is required, or when troopships are likely to come under attack from hostile forces. The Imperial Navy has officially protested Sororitas transports carrying weapons at all in an effort to force the disbanding of the transport fleets and make the Ministorum entirely reliant on the Navy for transport. However, the Navy is unwilling to propose outlawing weaponry on all non-Navy vessels, as this would increase the need for Navy vessels to protect civilian freighters to unsustainable levels."

So, how would one best represent a Adepta Sororita Corvette?

Destroyer sized craft, single macrocannon battery if any macroweaponry at all. It might just have point defence guns for shooting down incoming attack craft. Essentially they should be a non-issue when it comes to naval engagements.
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)07:18 No.15046098
    >>15046002
I'd say they might well have some dorsal mounted macrocannons - it seems freighters can at least mount that much, and the comparison is made to merchant vessel levels of firepower.
Plus point defences can't really count as armed for a ship. They aren't weapons, they're just another defence method, like voidshields and hull plating

Well it isn't for standard fleet engagements. There is a Campaign coming up in July which will involve 40k, BFG, SH and Epic.

My Sisters of Battle are, as of current plan, going to be hitting the capital cities of the enemy worlds but they first need to get there.
So in BFG, they'll be protected by the Imperial Fleet but instead of just taking a transport like the IG, they'd have their own Corvette on hand.

Thanks for the help so far though.
