642 KB Istvaan's Children, Legio Vereor, Scary Marines Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)22:45 No.15053294
Befitting the rumors of their origin linked to the once loyal Night Lords, the chapter that more often than not finds itself due with the simple title of "Scary Marines" rely on tactics focused on breaking the enemy morale. However, unlike the treacherous Night Lords of Chaos, the "Scary Marines" rely on raw psychological warfare which in itself is rather "harmless", but with continued pressure can win the battle for them before it is even started.

The greatest weapon of all is the simple Fear of The Unknown. The fear of things that stray from the daily norm, the fear of shapeless things that move in the dark, the fear of an impending invisible doom. Man or Xenos, this simple truth holds strong. Where their Night Lord "brethren" use savagery, violence, torture, and other horrors, the "Scary Marines" use their own questionable presence within reach as their greatest weapon of slowly degrading enemy morale.

The "Scary Marines" are known and reviled for their tenancy and great ability to appear and disappear soundlessly. Many stories tell of screams arising in the middle of the night and a single witness finding one of their number slain, circled by great armored men seemingly sculpted out of the shadows themselves, and when the witness tries to get help, these men are gone. Leaving no dropped weapons, no evidence of struggle, and not even a body. Only a puddle of blood, and perhaps a single bootprint.

No place is safe, no place is private, and no defense is strong enough, and when this simple fact has settled itself in the minds of those stricken heretics and xenos, the Marines come forth en masse, coming out of homes and hidden alleyways, as if from the shadows themselves.

Whispered rumours have them to be a loyalist splinter of the Night Lords, though no evidence has ever arisen to support this.

So why are the Emperor's Nightmare being developed and not these bad ass dudes?
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)22:46 No.15053305
Weirdest thing. Every time we write stuff down? It goes missing. We had a couple of people look into it but they either stopped talking to us and shut themselves off from everyone, or they just... vanished.

Then it's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. We need a Chapter Master, we need tales of valor and their exploits. We need rules, stats, etc.

It's time to bring Istvaan's Children into the light, so to speak.

Found it on scribd. First table is on why our chapter was originally founded.

    The chart given shows
    1-4 strategic prognostication
    5-6 counter
    7-8 standing force
    9-10 crusade.

Why have the scary marines been founded?
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)23:12 No.15053541
I would have to say that the scary marines are perfect as a Counter chapter. Having them go around scaring the crap out of everyone and everything.

I believe the chapter should be officially named "Istvaan's Children". It has a nice ring to it, much better than the "Legio Vereor" and less childish than "Scary marines".

With the name though, there might be some relation in people's minds between the chapter and the planet Istvaan V that got fucked up during the Horus Heresy. This might also mean that the chapter could have been founded not too long after the Heresy from Night Lord gene seed?

hehe, between the two of us, our options are

45 - 37th millenium, after the culmination of the reign of blood.

    and

73 -40thmillenium, as the imperium slides into the age of waning.

after the reign of blood, the children of istvaan could have been created as a prevention measure alongside the ordo hereticus which was created at the same time if my memory of fluff serves me right.

    >> Aserion 05/25/11(Wed)23:39 No.15053843
allright then, going with the 37th millenuim, now we determine our progenitors.

Do we wish to go along with them being a loyal successor of the nightlords? If so then we can ignore the rolling chart as that is not on it.

If not however, we need another 1d100. Im all for them being nightlord successors, definitely be interesting.

    our options are
2 = the genestock is pure.
    and
6=A new generation. Attempts have been made to breed out real or percieved flaws in the progenitors gene stock. Perhaps trying to hardwire loyalty?

    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)00:03 No.15054117
Actually, looking at the table, I see:

See, But Don't Be Seen (The Chapter understands well the value of maintaining a silent, unseen vigil on the foe, striking only when his target is at its weakest and most vulnerable)

Which is fitting, but No mercy, No respite is also good. Hmm, tough choice.

    >>15054040
HAHA Your roll is no mercy no respite.

    Options are
1= swift as the wind. The battle brothers of the chapter may excel at rapid strikes and lightning raids, but the trait extends to every facet of character. They are quick to anger as they are to jest. They can be impatient but display great personal initiative. While not rash or foolhardy such battlebrothers believe in the value of immediate action.

3=No Mercy, No Respite! these battlebrothers have no concept of defeat, and would rather die than accept that once battle is joined it will not be won. They are stubborn in the face of adversity, and are capible of awe inspiring feats of courage. On occasion, some battlebrothers have been known to ignore secondary objectives, somtimes to the detriment of the larger plan, and some have even been known to ignore orders from higher up on the chain of command when serving alongside other forces.

    Exactly.

next table is Geen Seed Deficiency, and chance of gene seed mutation. This comes down to when the gene seed of the night lords was taken. If It is some rare stock before the heresy, then I would say that it is on the level of ultramarine purity other than the Night lord changes. (eyes change to black, skin changes to very very pale.)

However if its geneseed taken from disloyal night lords, It is noted that they remain suprisingly pure, but is still lower on the level than that of imperial fists. (about a 20 to 30% chance of mutation?)

Agreed, Going with Urban Terrain, next chart up is RElationship with the homeworld. With the willingness to take over peoples jobs directly, I would hazard to say that they Rule it directly, instead of a stewardship or a distant rule. Thoughts?
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)01:31 No.15054990
    >>15054944

I would say Stewardship. They only seem to act when others aren't doing their jobs properly or when a bit of heresy or xenos influence is present, while remaining mostly distant from the populace.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)01:32 No.15055009
    rolled 1 = 1

    >>15054990
true, if they are seen too often, people may even begin to stop fearing them.

Next up is Chapter Organization. With a 1d10
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)01:34 No.15055026
    rolled 1 = 1

    >>15055009

    Right on, here we go.
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)01:35 No.15055038
    >>15055026
    >>15055009

perfect. A Codex chapter it is, then.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)01:35 No.15055042
    rolled 1 = 1

well, I think that's a unanimous roll for a codex chapter.

Next Chart up is Combat Doctrine, with another 1d10
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)01:36 No.15055050
I think though, we should take the stealth doctrine.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)01:37 No.15055055
no, the terror option. thats what i meant to type , derp.
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)01:38 No.15055073
    >>15055050

Yes, I was thinking either stealth or fear. Fear would be the more natural choice due to their Night Lord heritage, but stealth is also a major factor in their operations.
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)01:39 No.15055081
    >>15055055

    Terror it is.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)01:42 No.15055115
Next three charts are solo and squad mode abilities. rolling a 3d100 to knock those out easily.
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)01:43 No.15055127
    rolled 32, 29, 13 = 74

    Rolling for solo and squad.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)01:43 No.15055128
    rolled 26, 3, 35 = 64

Third time is the charm. Deleting my failure of a post.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)01:48 No.15055174
    rolled 77, 100, 9 = 186

32, 29, 13 = Solo, this chapter is highly skilled in certain areas of experties. (Choose two skills added +10 to those skills as well as reroll) Squad mode attack Follows the guidelines of its parent chapter (could be a problem here) Solo mode Defence Same as above.

26, 3, 35 = Solo (follows parent chapter guidelines for combat) Squad atack, (same as above) Squad Defense. Courage under Fire
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)01:54 No.15055236
Should we try and determine how the Night lords would react?
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)01:54 No.15055248
    >>15055174

I don't have that bit of the chart in front of me, so you can choose which would best suit this chapter.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)01:59 No.15055300
Not many to choose from that reflect what we want.

Next Chart is Chapter specialty restrictions, and equipment.
The roll for both is 1d100, but im going to go and say that since they have such jaded view of the ecleisiarchy, they do not have chaplains.

    Thoughts?
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:03 No.15055345
    >>15055300
Agreed. No Chaplains. Special equipment, I'd say Modified weaponry (suppressed bolters)
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:06 No.15055365
    rolled 34 = 34

Sounds good. Next up are the Chapter Beliefs. 1d100
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:07 No.15055371
    rolled 77 = 77

    rolling for beliefs.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:09 No.15055383
So either Revere the Primarch, unlikely since they are loyalists, or a Death Cult.
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:10 No.15055399
    >>15055383

    Death cult, for sure.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:14 No.15055448
    rolled 1 = 1

Next up is Chapter status, How many of us are there? 1d10!
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:16 No.15055474
    rolled 8 = 8

    >>15055448

    Here we go
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:18 No.15055504
    rolled 4 = 4

We are either endangered and not many, or at nominal strength as the codex dictates.

    quite a difference there.
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:21 No.15055529
    rolled 4 = 4

    >>15055504

The fluff doesn't mention anything about the chapter's actual strength. I think we should just mark it down as "unknown" unless we absolutely must have a number. If which is the case, I say Under strength.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:23 No.15055552
    >>15055529
Sounds reasonable. Next up are friends and enemies of the chapter. I would say that for friends, it should be the ordo hereticus, inquisition. and for enimies, either the ecleisiarchy, or the orks to reflect our chapter hero. Both take a 1d100 for rolls though.

    Thoughts?
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:27 No.15055592
    >>15055552

Agree for Ordo Hereticus as a friend. I think Orks would be the more dangerous enemy for the Istvaan's Children. Would also make for more interesting fluffy bits.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:29 No.15055621
and that is it. The rest is livery, names, and custom abilities.

Im going to put the thread up for archive, have to go to sleep.
