Keep the ranged benefits and such.

The desire to get stuck in is seen as blasphemy to the chapter only the brothers seen as falling to khornate tendancies would prefer swinging a sword over the rattle of a heavy bolter, the hiss of a missile taking flight, or the orgasmic rumble of artillery fire landing in the distance.

The Ochestre de Prince Héritier. A large remainder of the lost chapter Sanguinius' Thunder declared traitorous excommunicatus in M32 is known for their sustained artillery barrage tactics often incorporating music into them. The psychological effect of realizing that you are being shelled by a hymn to the Emperor based on the acoustics of your bunker has driven entire hives to capitulate

Once the bombardment has ended Orchestre brother are quick to re_engage. Using demonicly enhanced rhinos and possesed storm ravens they turn a nightmare of crashing shells to a furious firefight often behind the front lines.

At the forefront they release the most twisted of their brethern. Driven mad by bloodlust the mutant space marines crash relentlessly into melee combat. Known as the Chœr, these fallen Astartes will smother their target beneath writhing tentacles and bizarre pseudopods. Having been deafend by war they seek to feel the death rattle of the foes with what remains of their limbs.

Now that I'm back, we can continue with warband creation. To summarize, our Chaos marine faction:

    - Is a renegade chapter
    - Serves Slaanesh
    - Fell to Chaos due to fighting Heresy with Heresy
    - Progenitor is the Blood Angels
    - Is thoroughly devoted to Slaanesh
    - Believes corruption above all and is willing to work with mutants/abhumans
    - Marines have freakish skin
    - Marines are obsessed with getting close to their foes
    - Marines are skilled with ranged weapons and pray to Slaanesh before battle
    - Figure of legend is a champion/battle-brother who committed great atrocities on the Eldar
    - Homeworld is a liberated prison planet with ruined forests and a distant rule
    - Combat Doctrine is either close or ranged combat although this is still being debated
    - There are no Sorcerers but there are still some psykers
    - Special equipment is unique daemon engines
    - Chapter reveres Slaanesh above all others

Legion Warband or Renegade Chapter? D10
    1-5: Renegade Chapter
    6-10: Traitor Legion Warband

    Chaos Worship, D10
1-2: Chaos Undivided/Other (minor Chaos gods go under this as well)
    3-4: Slaanesh
    5-6: Khorne
    7-8: Nurgle
    9-10: Tzeentch
    >> Third Table OP !vv/Nr3MYLo 05/27/11(Fri)16:12 No.15073192

Reason for Fall (if Renegade Chapter), D100
1-5: The Chapter Master was accused of heresy by Inquisition. The Chapter fought against the Inquisition’s warriors and failed.
6-15: The chapter was friends with the wrong people and ended up being punished because of this.
16-30: Marines in the chapter dabbled in the dark arts and though nobody would find out. They were wrong.
31-40: The marines tried to fight heresy with heresy. The Ordo Malleus made them pay gravely for this when they found out.
41-45: The chapter rebelled, with originally good intentions, against the Imperium.
46-55: It was discovered that the chapter’s progenitor was a Traitor Legion (roll on Traitor Legion table to decide which).
56-70: The marines began indulging in the heretical and eventually became consumed by it.
71-80: A battle-brother discovered a mighty weapon. Little did he know a daemon was bound to it, which whispered dark words to its wielder.
81-90: The chapter’s forces were stationed in an area with a powerful wrap presence. This twisted their minds and corrupted them.
91-95: Near the brink of annihilation, the marines took an extremely cowardly or horrible action to preserve their chapter, and were excommunicated for this.
96-99: A major mutation appeared in the chapter’s gene-seed. Agents were deployed to remove the impure marines, but when they failed the chapter broke their bonds with the Imperium.
100: The chapter was friendly with a group of xenos and collaborated with them a bit too frequently. When the Ordo Xenos found out they had the Chapter Master executed and excommunicated his brothers.

    95-98: Iron Warriors
    99: Night Lords
    100: Alpha Legion

    TABLE 5:

Devotion to the Ruinous Powers, D10
1: Loathed. Many marines in the warband refuse to see Chaos as an ally and shun those who submit themselves to it.
2-5: Neutral. The warband believes Chaos to be more of a tool than something to be worshipped, serving the dark Gods when it benefits them.
6-10: Fanatic. The marines of the warband are highly devoted to their God(s), willingly submitting themselves to the Ruinous Powers and viewing possession as favourable.
    >> OP !vv/Nr3MYLo 05/27/11(Fri)16:18 No.15073261

    Demeanour, D10
1: Exploit and Conquer. The warband view all others as mere pawns, assisting them when it helps their own goals and tossing them aside once they are no longer needed. These marines are selfish and untrustworthy.
2: Scorched Earth. The battle-brothers of the warband commonly destroy anything they do not need so the enemy cannot use it. Even valuable things, such as captured fortresses and ships, are considered expendable if the foe can use it to their advantage.
3: Take No Prisoners. These warriors are butchers who slaughter all who stand before them. Even those who are willing to submit to the warband are ripped limb from limb.
4: Corruption Above All. Marines in the warband love being twisted by the warp, viewing mutation as a blessing and boon. They are very willing to work with abhumans, mutants and other freaks because of this.
5: Of a Lost Age. The warband has access to much pre-heresy technology. Having these ancient weapons gives the marines a respect and appreciation for the relics of old.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)16:18 No.15073262

Still think you all should have stuck with attrition warfare. Granted, I see them as fighting with the enemy until everyone is dead. They are devoted to slaanesh after all and it's not like they get off by fast victories.

    >> OP !vv/Nr3MYLo 05/27/11(Fri)16:19 No.15073272

6: Stalk the Prey. The marines of this force fight like hunters, waiting for just the right time to strike and kill their enemy. This way of combat gives them much patience and cunning.
7: Extra Heresy. A surprisingly large amount of the warband is willing to work alongside aliens, granted that they also worship Chaos (also this isn’t always the case). The battle-brothers in this force are more tolerant than most others.
8: Desecrate and Defile. These marines of this warband bear hatred towards icons and relics of the enemy, and will try to destroy or corrupt them whenever the chance arises. Temples burn and works of art are twisted by their hands.
9: Honour Amongst Thieves. Despite being evil and cruel individuals, these marines have a strong sense of brotherhood. Many would never even consider betraying their fellow warriors an option, and would even sacrifice themselves to save a friend’s life.
10: For the Dark Gods. The marines of this force believe their deities to be the ultimate beings of the Galaxy and are willing to serve them for eternity. Champions in the warband will frequently try to prove their worth, accepting any challenge and constantly trying to elevate their status amongst the warp’s chosen.

    Combat Doctrine, D10
    1: Rip and Tear
    2: Death from Afar
    3: Armoured Fist

So, if they're extra heretical and came from the Blood Angels, the Black Rage/Red Thirst almost certainly has something to do with their craziness. Maybe they offered themselves to Slaanesh to get rid of it, or embraced it and had their visions change from Sanguinus to Slaanesh? Slaanesh would probably find the idea of a bunch of berserkers delicious, considering that Khorne stole Khaela Mensha Khaine from him/her/it. It would explain the freaky enjoyment of gore and battle, too.

I really liked the omophagea/black carapace crossmutation idea, too.

    More musings:

Blood Angels are very well known for their appreciation of art and beauty. This could segue into Slaanesh worship incredibly quickly. Their successor chapters tend to have a lot of issues with the Black Rage and Red Thirst, so maybe their thing for ranged weapons started as a pathological avoidance of getting near the enemy to not trigger it. When they fell to Chaos, their extensive armory/training with ranged weaponry meant they kept it, only now they loooove getting up close and soaking in the gore inevitable from point blank bolter fire.
    >> OP !vv/Nr3MYLo 05/27/11(Fri)16:40 No.15073514

    You mean like this?
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)17:13 No.15073884

    Oooh, looky here.

    From Lexicanum:

The Twenty First Founding was the largest Founding of Space Marine Chapters since the Second Founding. It took place shortly before the Age of Apostasy, in M36. The focus of the Twenty First Founding was perfecting and removing deficiencies in flawed gene-seed, and ultimately the production of a new Primarch-like being in project "Homo Sapiens Novus"1. The Founding itself ended when one of its projects sent a warp signal and alerted Fabius Bile to its existence. The Twenty First Founding is also known as the Cursed Founding, because of the appalling bad luck that seems to dog the Chapters created. Worse still, some Chapters have developed genetic idiosyncrasies, mutations that strain the tolerance of the Inquisition and threaten the Chapter's survival. As a result the Chapters have gradually dwindled in size as their inability to raise and induct recruits means that battle casualties cannot be replaced.

I think we have our founding, gentlemen.
    >> OP !vv/Nr3MYLo 05/27/11(Fri)17:14 No.15073896

So we're all agreed on Skin Dancers being the name, or are there any other suggestions?
    >> OP !vv/Nr3MYLo 05/27/11(Fri)17:16 No.15073927
Very interesting. Although our chapter has more numbers than the average loyalist chapter and the reason for being excommunicated was for fighting heresy with heresy. I can see this working very well still.

Chaos would probably mean that mutations wouldn't lead to problems 'recruiting,' and fighting heresy with heresy probably came from the shit luck from the Cursed Founding - possibly a completely out of control rate of people falling into Black Rage? They found a daemon/text that offered release, and Slaanesh jumped at the chance to steal a slowly corrupting chapter from Khorne.
    >> Founding Shit Shock 05/27/11(Fri)17:20 No.15073976
The 36th Millennium puts us in a founding between the 10th (only known 35th Millennium founding) and the 22nd Founding (first 37th Millennium founding). That gives the Skin Walkers (we should probably come up with a pre-chaos name for them as well) twelve possible foundings they could have been in at the very most.

The 11th and 12th Foundings have unknown dates, so could be in either the 35th or 36th Millenniums. The 13th is the first confirmed M36 Founding and is known as the Cursed Founding (Exorcists and Death Spectres are from this founding).

Other confirmed M36 foundings are the 19th (founding of the Avenging Sons) and 21st (Cursed founding). Other confirmed Spess Mahreen chapters founded during the 36th Millennium are the Angels of Fire, Celebrants, Relictors and Steel Confessors.

    Just so you know.

21-30: Khorne has smiled upon this legion, and their skill at arms is backed by the might of the Blood God.. +5 WS and BS.
31-40: This Chapter's mutations tend towards highly acute senses and muscular enhancement. +5 PER and STR.
41-50: The Darker Powers that the warband serves have seen fit to give their warriors unnatural skill in whatever they pursue. Gain +2 wounds and +5 to a characteristic of the player's choice.
51-60: The Plaguefather appears to have a vested interest in the survival of this warband. +5 WP and Toughness.
61-70: Slaanesh has granted its boons to the warriors of this Chapter, resulting in hypnotic, disturbing grace. +5 Agility and Toughness.
71-80: All members of the force are expected to take at least some lessons in the ways of the Warp, from the lowliest serf to the most powerful sorcerer. +5 INT and PER.
81-90: Following the example of legions like the Word Bearers, this Chapter spreads the word of Chaos through honeyed tongue and roaring chainsword. +5 FEL and WS.
91-00: The Warp's gifts to the legion are far more beneficial than usual, adapting to the disciple's strengths and weaknesses with an inhuman intelligence. +5 to two characteristics of the player's choosing.

    Table 1-19 (Solo Mode) converted:

1-30: Old habits die hard. If this is a renegade chapter, this Chapter has its parent chapter's Solo Mode ability. If a Traitor Legion warband, pick any Solo Mode ability available to represent the tattered remnants of millennia-old strategy.
31-45: The Chapter has grown quite adept with certain skills. Choose two skills. At Rank 1, a Battle-Brother may reroll any failed test taken with those skills. At Rank 4, they gain +10 to any roll involving those skills. At Rank 8, they gain a bonus degree of success on any roll with those skills.
46-60: One characteristic stands out among all others within the warband. At Rank 1, it can reroll any failed tests involving that characteristic. At Rank 4, it gains +10 to any roll involving that characteristic. At Rank 8, it gains a bonus degree of success to any roll involving that characteristic.
61-85: Inhuman speed and reactions are the hallmark of this Chapter. While in Solo Mode, all Battle-Brothers of the Chapter are considered to have Lightning Reflexes. At Rank 3, they receive +10 to all Dodge tests. At Rank 5, they are considered to have the Rapid Reaction talent. At Rank 7, once per session, a Battle-Brother may automatically pass any Agility test as if they'd rolled 01.
86-00: The power of Chaos is an intimately familiar thing to these warriors. All Battle-Brothers have Psyniscience as a trained skill, and may reroll any failed Willpower tests to resist psychic powers or sorcery.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)18:30 No.15074768

This means we still keep the Blood Angels Solo Mode ability, Blood Frenzy.

Once per combat, a Battle-Brother of the Blood Angels Chapter may summon up a Blood Frenzy. While under the effects of this ability, the Battle-Brother may re-roll Damage dice with melee weapons. In the case of melee weapons that inflict multiple dice of Damage, all dice or none must be re-rolled. In addition, such is the brutality of his attacks that he scores Righteous Fury (see page 245) on a dice result of 9 or 10 rather than just 10. This ability lasts a number of rounds equal to the Battle- Brother’s Rank, divided by 2 (rounding up).
Improvement: At Rank 3 and above the Penetration of any melee weapon attacks by the Battle-Brother are increased by +2. At Rank 5 and above this additional melee weapon Penetration rises to +4. At Rank 7 and above the chance of scoring Righteous Fury increases to a dice result of 8, 9, or 10.

I think this sort of seals the melee/close combat focus. Charge in firing ranged weaponry, then switch to rip and tear.

    Feel No Pain.

    Free Action, 3 Coherency, non-sustainable.

Until the start of his next turn, the Battle-Brother and squadmates within Support Range takes half Damage, after reduction from armor and toughness. However, such is the lust for battle that flows through them that actions cannot be spent to Dodge or Parry during this time period, and all actions taken must have the Attack subtype. At Rank 5 or above, the restrictions on Dodging and Parrying are ignored.

Combat Doctrine is probably Rip And Tear with spots for ranged combat on the charge, with the crunch we have. They used to fully favor ranged weaponry, but now have succumbed to bloodlust.
Colors, probably very deep red/purple, the color of gore, accentuating their mutated skin.
Skin Dancers may have been pre-heresy with how weird the names get, but if not, we could pick on something more traditionally BA successory. I liked Bloodied Apostles.
The leader is probably a Champion of Slaanesh.
Orks don't 'get' violence, maybe? Maybe freebootas raided their pirate buddies?
Their pirate buddies are probably some Lost and the Damned faction of mutants and privateers.

    I've got an idea.

Someone earlier brought up the idea that Khorne tried to claim the chapter but Slaanesh ended up helping them resist Khorne's influence.

I want to expand on that concept. Perhaps they discovered a skilled daemonette (a literal Skin Dancer) who taught them the ways of Slaanesh so they could defeat Khorne. After being excommunicated, they renamed the chapter after the daemonette who assisted them.

    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)20:20 No.15075886
I approve of both of these ideas.
    >> OP !vv/Nr3MYLo 05/27/11(Fri)20:33 No.15075965
Good idea. He would be an excellent choice for chapter master, come to think of it.

    Deeds of Legend, D100
1-25: Hero is remembered as a scourge of the Imperium, having ravaged many planets and slaughtering servants of the Emperor aplenty.
26-50: The figure of legend killed a renowned and mighty Imperial hero (think Chapter Master, a well-known Inquisitor, a famous General).
51-70: The hero corrupted nearly an entire sector of planets, causing the populations of them to fall to Chaos.
71-85: The legend committed great atrocities during the boarding of an Eldar Craftworld. He and his warband are still hated to this day by the Eldar.
86-90: A fearsome champion of the Dark Gods, the figure ascended and became a Daemon Prince. He used his new power to crush all who opposed the warband at the time.
91-95: The hero led a campaign of extermination against a loyalist Astartes chapter, butchering them to the last man and stealing their gene-seed.
96-100: The figure of legend led many wars and slaughtered countless foes. However, he was eventually slain by a rival Chaos champion. The warband holds great hatred for the champion’s and his marines to this day.

I'd be happy to write up some fluff later on.

    Their pre-heresy name?

    Vermillion Wolves
    Frenzied Eaters
    Death Talons
    Dark Wolves
    Fire Foxes
    Blood Phantoms
    Blood Dragons
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)20:40 No.15075998
    Blood Dragons sounds good.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)20:41 No.15076002
I agree that we should change the name to something else. Skin Dancer can be the name of the daemonette.

ohhh I am pleased to see this back up first thing when I get home from work.

Was my fluff suggestion about the explanation of their skin mutation ever canonized or scrapped?
    >> Shock 05/27/11(Fri)20:51 No.15076076

    Blood Dragons.

Oh, and if we HAVE to change the name of the chapter, I think the Flayed Dancers sound best.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)20:52 No.15076079
    Crunchnon back.

Remember, some of the names of Chapters are "Rainbow Warriors," "Silver Skulls," "Celestial Lions," etc. etc. The names can get pretty goofy.

oooh If we're working on finalizing a name. I suggest

    The Glistening Host

A reference to their berserker nature of being covered in blood, and glistening is about the most slanneshi way i can describe it.

    >Was my fluff suggestion about the explanation of their skin mutation ever canonized or scrapped?

It's not canonized yet, but it think it's a cool idea.

    Is this thread autosagging yet?
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)20:55 No.15076105

The people against "Skin Dancers" seem to be against it because it's 'gay', and I think 'Glistening Host' would be even fruitier to them. However, if we must change, I admit that's a pretty good alternative.
    >> Ave Dominus Nox 05/27/11(Fri)20:58 No.15076121
the second we became slannesh worshipers. Dicks has been suggested for just about every roll outcome. So I'm not quite sure where the sudden aversion to gay is coming from.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)21:01 No.15076150
Okay, so Blood Dragons it is, for their original name? I like that best too.
    >> OP !vv/Nr3MYLo 05/27/11(Fri)21:03 No.15076163
    I'm down with Blood Dragons.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)21:03 No.15076164
Actually, I do like it better. 'Skin Dancers' just doesn't have a good ring to it. Hell, even a SUPERGAY name like 'Sons of Sodom' or something like that would be better as long as it sounded nice.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)21:03 No.15076174

I think it's an awesome idea too. It ties a lot of the elements of the chapter that we rolled up together.
    >> Shock 05/27/11(Fri)21:04 No.15076181

Yeah, I'm liking that a lot as well.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)21:06 No.15076199
There should also be a minor group of loyalist Blood Dragons, that'd be cool. Like one company that didn't resort to Chaos.

Might be hard to work with since the whole chapter was accused of heresy. Perhaps a small faction that reported the chapter's heretical activities to the Inquisition?
    >> OP !vv/Nr3MYLo 05/27/11(Fri)21:10 No.15076254
So on the topic of names; how many want Blood Cavorters, how many want Flayed Dancers, how many want Glistening Host, and how many want it to stay the same?
    >> Imperius !!gsuZiBTIqe0 05/27/11(Fri)21:11 No.15076268
Then sent on a crusade of absolution against the heretical element as pennence instead of execution? Just throwing ideas out.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)21:12 No.15076275

Stay Skin Dancers, primarily, but if we switch, make it Glistening Host.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)21:12 No.15076281

I think Glistening Host has the best ring to it out of all those suggestions.

Plus, it also dredges up all kinds of uncomfortable imagery, perfect for a Slaaneshi faction.
    >> Imperius !!gsuZiBTIqe0 05/27/11(Fri)21:13 No.15076286
Flayed Dancers sounds a little better, Skin Dancers feels a little blunt about their crazy skin.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)21:14 No.15076293
Im fine with anything but Skin Dancers, so -1 to that from me.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)21:15 No.15076302

    Sounds alright to me.
    >> OP !vv/Nr3MYLo 05/27/11(Fri)21:17 No.15076323
Yes Glistening Host does have a nice ring to it. I suppose if it was made the name, Blood Cavorters and Flayed Dancers could be specialized units (perhaps their equivalent of Death Company?) within the chapter.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)21:18 No.15076326
    >> Anonymous 05/27/11(Fri)21:20 No.15076341

We should still keep Skin Dancer as the name of the Daemonette. Blood Cavorters sounds completely stupid. Flayed Dancers could be a good Death Company knockoff, people who still went apeshit kill-crazy despite Slaanesh's assistance and self-flagellate themselves while charging toward the enemy to tear them apart.
