Hello elegan/tg/entlemen, I've been a fan of the fluff for Warhammer 40k for a long time, and now that I'm home for the summer some friends and I have decided that it would be fun to start playing the tabletop game. I've decided I want to run a space marine army.

I know that there have been a ton of these threads recently but I'd appreciate it if you guys could help me design a chapter with the rites of battle tables.

To get things started, roll 1d10 to determine why the chapter was founded.

"Eye to Eye" The chapter sees no honor in any other form of combat than man to man, eye to eye. It eschews many other aspects of war and always seeks to deliver the killing blow in person, at the very speartip of battle. Battle-Brother's of the chapter are temperamentally or doctrinally ill disposed towards other tactics, and are often overcome with the desire to witness in person the death of their foes. Some indulge in grisly rituals to prove their measure in close combat such as the taking of heads or ripping out the foe's still beating heart before his very eyes.

We're going for a knight theme, right? And it's a feudal desert world?

I say we base it off Iberia. Differentiate them from the other knight themed space marines (Dark Angels, Black Templars)

I've been doing some thinking and reading, and I think I've come up with some good ideas.

First, I think the name "The Brotherhood of the Gauntlet" works best.

The Iron Hands have no chapter master, instead each company (called a clan) sends one of it's most revered members to take part of a council. This fits the brotherhood/knightly order (think Camelot) idea.

Now here's the second part, it's a bit of a stretch. I think in a bit of fluff somewhere it mentions that Ferrus Manus' body was never recovered after Fulgrim slayed him on Istaan V.

The Brotherhood of the Gauntlet is guarding one of Ferrus Manus' gauntlets/hands. Since they don't know the details of their founding, they might not even know it, only seeing the gauntlet as one of their chapter's most important relics.

If these are Muslim Feudal Marines compared to the Black Templar's and Dark Angel's Christian Feudal Marines, then let's use some cultural differences for differences between the Chapter.

For one component, they probably have a higher respect for learning and medicine.
They are also probably less... ruthless, if what I remember from slouching during history documentaries is correct, Muslim dynasties at the period we're talking about subjugated their oppressed minorities less. They still did it, but to a lesser extent.

Going to see if they fall all the way into spikes and tentacles chaos or stay sane enough to just be opportunistic mercenaries or raiders, or re joining the imperium proper.

goddamnit. i need to reply faster... here's some crap i came up with that probably won't be used:

since these guys favor in your face tactics ... and take after knights ... imho it makes sense that they should wear bright, bold colors ... with lots of arcane but very visible patterns ...

tarantula turrets are the complete opposite of in your face; they are ranged weapons controlled from afar. fucks no. when you throw down the gauntlet, you throw down with the emperor's men, face to face, with rapid-firing bolters and chainswords, dropped in from orbit ...
    >> Anonymous 05/28/11(Sat)17:52 No.15084810
    >>15084797
the following is a bunch of crap y'all are free to ignore; i wrote most of this after my browser crashed, long before the moorish knights were suggested:

"Omiterve" - both 'Omit' and 'Omiter' sound asian indian ... and dark skin makes sense on a desert world ... a name that ends with '-erve' makes me think of the french ... and the imperial french are well known for fielding colorfully dressed knights -and in fact 'chivalry' is derived from a french word ...

an asian indian & gaulic knight themed chapter sounds fairly unique -in fact i fucking laughed out loud as i typed that- and both cultural inclusions make sense in their own way; asian indians invented kung fu -which is very in your face- and the gaulic knights wear colorful knight uniforms -which makes sense both for intimidating the enemy and for maintaining unit cohesion amidst the kind of chaos that comes with 'in your face' combat tactics ... the uniforms of knights later inspired sport uniforms, such as for rugby, and i don't know about the french but it seems like the indians have really taken to such sports ...

when i think of indian martial arts, i think of small shields and whip blades, as well as throwing disks and curved blades ... large, pointy swords with curving edges -i can't remember what these are called but think of the old triangle shaped space marine power swords, but slanted and with 'flame' edges like a flamberge ... or just think of a flamberge that is slanted and gets wider at the bottom. of course, kung fu is not limited to bare fists or any single type of weapon; all close combat weapons are possible, including pikes, halberds ...

power-whip blades and chakras! IT MUST BE SO.
    >> Anonymous 05/28/11(Sat)17:54 No.15084836
    >>15084810
one more thing on combat tactics: asian indians made extensive use of cheap, female combatants -i believe they are credited with the first known use of what became kunoichi in the east- which meshes well with the whole 'distant rule' thing; perhaps a local sororitas coven does most of the heavy lifting on the recruiting worlds -doing most of the actual work, while the knights of course get most of the credit. perhaps the two forces are inseparable, going on crusading missions together, with the sororitas acting as a covering assault force to protect the knights, who would naturally act as pinpoint strike forces ; perhaps this chapter is known for uniting the two competing lawful entities, the arbites, who would serve the administratum, and the sororitas who serve the priesthood. the arbites are like the fbi and sororitas are like special forces working for the cia.
    >> Anonymous 05/28/11(Sat)17:56 No.15084860
    >>15084836
-actually, come to think of it, 'distant rule' also meshes with the indian caste system... at least in some ways; perhaps the knights feel they are above the daily work of governing their homeworlds, and so leave the task to the sororitas and arbites -and therefore are rarely ever seen by common imperial citizenry. however, the knights inevitably must work closely with the sororitas and arbites in order to unite them and direct them, that they would work more efficiently. perhaps their 'chivalrous' demeanor and outlook permits such loyalty.

-perhaps 'chivalrous' in this case simply means these marines would rather hold off on extreme tactics like exterminatus, and would rather make pinpoint strikes solely toward the guilty party ... treading the 'middle path,' as it were. then again, how would this unite them with the arbites and sororitas ... i guess we could go the other way and have 'chivalrous' mean the exact opposite, as de rigueur in 40k, meaning utter ruthlessness at the mere hint of guilt. although that seems more fitting, it also seems more bog-standard.

...what's the point of creating a unique chapter if it feels exactly like an existing chapter? i can't really think of any traditionally knightly marines, save for the salamanders (who really are more tribalistic). but of course, aside from chivalrous ideals, knights tended to be dicks in real life. hm.

-dickish assholes who send the sororitas to do the dirty work, and then claim all the glory, while hoisting proud battle standards. that actually sounds unique.

-sororitas and chakrams. and perhaps they are led by a wild-tempered canonness 'xenaar.' ...maybe that's too much.
    >> Anonymous 05/28/11(Sat)17:58 No.15084875
    >>15084860
if the knights are indian, and their favored enemy is chaos, the automatic inclination is to draw from hindu mythology ... the obvious gods to look to are shiva and kali ...

shiva - blue skin, many arms, god of destruction and transformation = sounds tzeentchian. the gauntlet knights would absolutely require the use of both sororitas and arbites if they are facing a tzeentchian enemy ... perhaps their favored enemy is led by a chaos champion named 'shivar' (is that too obvious?) ... the followers of shiva are called shaivites, from sanskrit saiva ... that sounds like 'savor,' and 'saiga' ... of course, savor makes me think of slaanesh ... maybe the chaos champion really savors the act of creating change, and is adorned with goat-skull icons ... maybe his is a tzeentchian force that wears horned helms.

kali - many arms, goddess of destruction, her dance causes the end of the universe ... organizations just feel female somehow, since they are created to create something else ... if i were to extend the name kali, immediately i think of 'kalimarr' -which sounds like calimari, baby squid, which fits both the slaaneshi and tzeentchian themes quite well; squidlike creatures are often depicted in propaganda to represent an insidious and growing force, and male squids literally reproduce through raping ... 'kalliva' also springs to mind, which sounds like cleaver, which fits the destruction theme but sounds more khornate ... perhaps these chaos marines are armed with battlefield cleavers, which are like chinese 'guan dao' -or force halberds, minus the spike on the back of the blade ...
    >> Anonymous 05/28/11(Sat)18:00 No.15084890
    >>15084875
the chinese thing makes me think of the present economic competition between the asian indians and east asians.
-perhaps the chaos pirates are led by an east asian chaos champion. hell, 'saiga' sounds like an asian name ... and of course asian martial arts is derived from the indians so there's that 'pirate' thing. of course, asian pirates like to think they improve on the things they steal (which is questonable, except for simple devices, where the pirate goods actually do use better components) so perhaps these pirates are armed similarly to the gauntlet knights, but have better quality weapons ... idunno.

-perhaps the chaos champion could be made using one of the white scars conversion sets -with a mounted man's cleaver, an asian head, and a small shield- and a chaos champion or librarian body that incorporates a goat's skull.

...so basically i've created an analog for the current conflict between the indians and asians.

final bullshit post from before moorish knights were suggested.

    as for appearance...

if y'all decide to go with the indian influence, there's a lot of interesting headgear y'all can go with. besides the obvious turbans and headscarfs with feathered and jewelled broaches, there are also pointed hats incorporating throwing disks ...

these marines are knights ... should they wear tabbards? the french knights wore brightly colored tabards (contrasts against black templars) and their armor is steel grey ... actually, i can't imagine that a tabard would survive close combat very well ... perhaps these marines should be given colorful armor instead (which would be a relief from all the boring black and grey) ... actually, since these marines come from a desert world, perhaps they could wear goldenseal colored armor ; the color of sand and dust ; it's hard to pick out at a distance, yet impossible to ignore up close ... or, following hindu mythology, perhaps they should have pearly blue armor -which would make them stand out at a distance, except at night, but they would definitely stand out up close.

    sport designs would make sense for identifying squadmates, and are derived from medevial insignia ... stripes, chevrons, crosses, maybe a quartered scheme painted on individual units to make them easily identifiable amidst chaos ... perhaps the use of animals to depict different companies (french) or attack roles (asian) ;

'in your face' means it might be difficult to maintain unit cohesion on the battlefield; brightly colored , cleverly patterned uniforms would make sense.

    PS: FUCK THE CAPTCHA

Okay, found a slight islamic equivalent of a Knight:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cataphract

Now so far these Marines have been pretty bro. Bros to each other, all for the progression of mankind. But we already have a few bro marines out there, and this allows the introduction of a flaw.

While they are all for research, technological progress and have close bonds with one another they are also arrogant fuckers. Hit and run tactics, but honourable so. Terrify enemy by dropping in drop pods, charge in, bolter blazing, chop em up a bit, retreat with bolters also blazing. Rinse and repeat. Also it seems a lot of the noble Muslim warrior seemed to fight on horseback and there's a lot of emphasis on that. Possibly a high biker list as well, this is also a divergence from Dark Angels and Black Templars.
    Also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sipahi
Another Muslim equivalent which gives me the idea that while the Chapter distantly rules the planet, sections of the Planet may be responsible for the upkeep and maintaining order of a section of the planet. Shit goes down, they deal with it. In return the people of the planet work in factories and provide services for the Marines.

The idea of an Islamic based Eccleisary work working with the Marines is good, meshes with the knight thing and we can bring in some Islamic elements. Not sure if Sororitas will work, was there ever an Islamic equivalent to a nun?

Of course no public displays of heresy are allowed. But the Brotherhood is aware certain households cling to their heretical way and tithe them more instead of just slaughtering them.

Speaking of heretics, the arch enemy and the deed that our Chapter's hero committed is Chaos, shall we fluff that?

but yeah, there's been a lot of arguments and hostility between the Inquisition and the Brotherhood. Maybe a lot over the planet? The Inquisition wanted it, they don't like how the Brotherhood run things, etc.

Oh here's a thing. Muslims tend to look down on the Trinity. I think this might be able to work with the whole Omnisiah angle, they might not get along with the Iron Hands and AdMech as well as they might because they refuse to differentiate between the Omnisiah and the Emperor even a little, this also links to their reverence of the Emp.

It'd help if we had someone who really knew a bit about Islam. I honestly don't know what most of the differences between Islam and Christianity are, the main theological ones at least.

to eschew any faith in the mechanicus makes sense, after what happened during horus heresy. likewise, since the gauntlet knights have a strong predilection towards high technology -owing to their parent legion-, they would have, at one point, worked very closely with the mechanicus and ultimately may have discovered hintings of the void dragon, or something else clearly sinister and un-imperial within the machine cult ... they do not share such information publicly, because it would be suicide to attack the mechanicus outright, but now they completely distrust the servants of mars and independently maintain and manufacture their own weaponry. such could be a good reason why the inquisition would be curious about the gauntlet knights.

'jackknife' crick. i love it. is he a crackpot or the founder of a large movement? ... perhaps he leads a growing contingent of renegade guard, and the planet is about to fall into civil war, but the gauntlet knights have no clue since they rule from afar -or perhaps, civil war is already joined, and the attacks by cricks men grow bolder the longer the gauntlet marines fail to appear. again, another reason why the inquisition would be very curious. technically, crick leads rebels against the main planetary force, but the rebels' beliefs fall more in line with the inquisition.

the difference in faith between the knights and the rest of the imperium needs to be more fleshed out. perhaps they worship the living emperor and -again owing to their higher understanding of technology- do not regard the corpse on the golden throne as being the same.

The chapter has a strong Moorish/Islamic theme.

The chapter has no chapter master but is instead governed by a council of the most revered members of each company.

The chapter places a special emphasis on learning, knowledge, technology, and medecine

    Battle Brothers carry scimitars/falchions.

The marines believe in helping others and being progressive but are also quite arrogant.

    Ibn prefix - Librarians/Techmarines/Apothecaries
    Cataphract/Furusiyya - Biker Marines
    Janissary - Tactical Marines

The planet the Brotherhood rules over is not unified in its worship of the Emperor. The marines encourage conversion to worshipping the God Emperor by secretly supplying factions (kingdoms?/caliphates?) that worship the Emperor with better technology.

The chapter has one of the gauntlets of the Primarch, Ferrus Manus in it’s possession, it is undetermined whether or not they know that the gauntlet belonged to the Primarch.
    >> OP 05/28/11(Sat)20:16 No.15085969
    >>15085965
There is a Christianity-like Tzeentch (or Nurgle?) cult on the planet.
Possibly some Slaanesh worship among the nobles.
    Possible Alpha Legion Presence

The Inquisition/an Inquisitor dislikes the Brotherhood because they have some odd views about the Emperor and their unwillingness to destroy non-Chaos heretics.

The Brotherhood does not differentiate between the Emperor and the Omnissiah or any of the Emperor’s other forms.

The chapter may have knowledge of the Void Dragon, they’ve cut all ties with Mars and the Mechanicus.

    Yes to both these ideas.

I like how this Chapter is quite balanced. It has the following Pros:
+ Fuck yeah technology + progression
    + Helps progression of planet
    Cons:
    - On bad terms with a lot of the Imperium, the AdMech and the Inquisition respectively are prime examples
    - Marine supremacists, believe Marines are superior beings to normal humans and that their chapter is the best.

I added the former part of the latter con just now because I realized those sort of chapters exist, I think it fits well with our theme. They still protect humanity, but they do believe in their own superiority. In that way there are similar to their progenerators, the Iron Hands.

I think it's more that they believe their ways are the best, that's why they share tech with the factions that worship Big E. They want to advance humanity as a whole.

So it's not so much an "If you're not a marine you suck." complex.

It's more of a "If you don't listen to us, you're a retard." complex.

i'm having difficulty reconciling the two different islams in media.

there is the peaceful, advanced islam of legend, and the ... um... backwards islam we see depicted in news today.

on that note, i can't seem to find evidence of this quickly but i recall that at one point, iran sent waves of men armed solely with swords and small arms to confront tanks. perhaps the gauntlet cataphractii could use guardsmen in this manner, to send (relatively) poorly armed masses to face the brunt of the enemy, and distract their firepower as the cataphracti make precision strikes. 'the gauntlet directing the hammer,' as it were.

well, you're gonna hate my next idea.

one of the most visible symbols of islam is the kaaba, the 'black cube,' a recreation of adam's home and a shrine housing 'the black stone,' an artifact that fell from the sky. abraham began his pilgrimmage after the kaaba was constructed.

it's a very visual idea; a black cube of about 13^3 meters, covered with religious inscriptions, housing a .

perhaps on the desert world there is a similar structure, the 'kuub,' that is a recreation of a bunker that was briefly used by the emperor... the black stone, however... damnit, i can't help but think of a soulstone, but we really don't need to give the inquisition any more reasons to reconsider these marines.

perhaps the gauntlets' black stone is a soulstone-like device, within which is recorded some secret information.

or perhaps, what if the black cube were a powerful computer, constructed by the cataphracti, and the black stone were the brain of the computer? what if this computer is used by the arbites to maintain order on the planet and by the cataphracti to make calculations as to where and how to rejoin their crusade... as an implement of the emperor's will, the cube would be a holy thing, and all servants of the emperor on the planet would make prayer toward the cube, likewise with prayers to the emperor.

speaking of turks, reputedly, turkish kids learn to recite the quran in an entirely different language than they actually speak. they're essentially 'singing' the quran without knowing precisely what they are saying.

a similar thing could happen on this planet, with barely literate citizenry quoting full verses in high gothic to show off to their superiors without having a deep understanding of what they're actually saying.

-even better if they quote awkwardly interrupted half verses that they think mean one thing when they really mean the opposite; like, a verse that proclaims worship over the holy trinity is quoted to mean worship only over the flesh and blood emperor.

one more thing; turkish society rewards good students with a full scholarship to university; likewise, perhaps this society is a meritocracy, and only the more intelligent and capable citizens are selected for stormtrooper training. thus, you have commissars (veteran stormtroopers) with a full understanding of high gothic, who can barely restrain their contempt for the common citizenry.

Our Chapter, once, had close ties with the AdMech before they came to revile the Omnisiah-Emperor division but their ties were different from their progenitors. For while the Iron Hands say the flesh is weak so we must turn to metal, the Brotherhood says the flesh is weak so let us make it stronger.

They had close ties with divisio biologis and have come with many medical techniques to improve combat effectiveness. They work to improve these techniques.

    whatever the drug is, it should be somewhat narcotic, to pay homage to the delil. to take it would dull the physical senses and 'sharpen' the mind -to hone in on smaller details, such as a weakness in armor, to the exclusion of all else;

a person on such a drug could be utterly brutal and precise in close combat, yet not realize that all his brothers have fallen or that the joined effort has failed.

alright, how about this. an apothecary designed the drug, but it was made legendary after the exploits of a legendary sipahi -a mounted space marine given legendary brutality and fighting ability, and an equal measure of senselessness by the drug; ultimately, an ineffectual leader, but a hypercapable fighter.

the chapter named the drug after him, as he is the first and best -and continuing- testament to the value of the drug, having never stopped taking it since that fateful day. his altered, reckless nature is also the reason why the chapter convenes a council rather than following the whims of one man. that the entire chapter is often high on agga is also why they leave the ministrations of their homeworld to the adeptus.

the chapter is cut off from the mechanicus, and so has a low supply of dreadnought bodies...

thus, only those elite champions who survive -and stand victorious, despite catastrophic injuries- are immediately entombed following battle, lest the drug wear off and the body die of shock.

the rest of the dead cataphracti are released from their armor and buried immediately... so their souls don't have to continue to suffer the horror of the kinds of physical injuries that come with close combat assault.

whoof... i'm clearly getting tired and muddleheaded...

actually, to go back to an even older, more defunct contribution... the islamists also made extensive use of cheap female combatants -a practice they continue to this day with retarded (literally) female suicide bombers.

that these marines hardly ever step onto their recruiting world leaves it open for some other party to take control; perhaps an allied missionary group and their sororitas coven. these radical missionaries believe as the gauntlet cataphracti do, but they play a far more active role on the homeworld -and even on crusades, it is the allied sororitas and guardsmen who are most often seen defending positions and driving the line forward. only brief glimpses of the cataphracti are ever seen, dropping from the sky to take the very best positions and the most valuable targets.

since they're all about the living emperor, they wouldn't get along very well with the ecclesiarchy or the sisters anyways ... devotes of the living emperor's beliefs are all about rationality and numbers.

...speaking of which, i'm thinking 'quub' ought to be an acronym of something... quorum unitary utilitarian barracks... quotient utilizing ultimate blarneystone... ...i'm totally not serious about these names, but i think it should be something about the divination of strategies, or computation...

-perhaps the secret of the quub is, it is more than merely a powerful computer; the cpu of the quub is actually the eponymous gauntlet worn by a forgotten champion (???) -really one of the hands of ferrus manus- given new life, and a limited ability to communicate via the soulstone-like device which it grasps --which could actually be a necron ressurection orb, or a recreation thereof.

this secret may or may not be known to anyone in the chapter, and isn't known to anyone outside (???). the knowledge that went into creating the quub was lost because ... the silhatar who created it went missing ... because he was the one who figured out the link between the mechanicus and the void dragon, and was assassinated, reduced to component atoms via gauss weaponry (???). anyone within the chapter may or may not have figured this out.

-if this idea is selected, it adds a bit of irony to the chapter; that the emperor staunchly opposes any ai, yet the quub is an artificial construct that displays qualities which suggest an independent intelligence.

i meant to say, anyone may or may not have figured out the cause of the silhatar's disappearance.

-if the idea about the ressurection orb is selected, perhaps the silhatar's soul was sucked up by the orb, as directed by the quasi-ressurected ferrus manus' gauntlet, and the knowledge contained therein was lost to the assassin; the corrupted mechanicus would have no clue about the inner workings of the quub -though they are highly curious about the device, for obvious reasons.
