    >You are Justinian Trentz, Commander in the Degnarian Legion, currently seconded to the 1st Praetorians (commander of the Degnarian Legion) Left Fist, the third most prestigious combat unit in the Empire, second only to the Praetor Militants Right Fist, and the Emperors TAlon, his personal combat bodyguard. Degnar, your homeland, is currently in a bloody stalemate of a war with its traditional enemy, the Kingdom of Uurlanth. However, the elves of the Guild Lands recently entered a military alliance with Uurlanth that threatens to tip the balance heavily against Degnar. Degnarian politicians are working to bring the dwarves of the Dwemer Duchy to enter a military alliance with the Empire. Should that fail, your commander, the First Praetorian has a shadowy plan to reach that same goal, however he would not share it with you. As such, you and your soldiers are to wait in the capitol city, DragonsReach, for the next month, recovering.

    >The war, however, is not the only thing spreading chaos about the land. The gods, and the arcane are returning to the world after nearly 4000 years of having been thought dead. You, are at the forefront of those in the empire re-discovering that which has been lost for four millenia, and your ultimate goal is to become the Praetorian of the Divine. An office once thought lost to obsolescence with the disappearance of the gods, 1000 some years after the mortal races, humans, dwarves, elves, the cat-like felixsians, and the massive hulking lizard-men known as lacertans, killed the gods immortal servants on the mortal plain, the 6 Dragons, Elemental Patriarchs and Elemental Matrairchs.

You make your way back to your barracks under the early summer midday sun, glad that you dressed lightly. The Nobles Causeway is strangely quiet, which makes you nervous, though not frightened. Once you enter the building, Sansa rushes to you, clearly flustered, and oddly up-dressed from her normal wear "Justinian, er, Commander, theres theres... Janos has news but you need to go to your Private study NOW. Dont run, and try to wipe your boots love. Jayne would skin me if I let you make it there looking unkempt." At that she darts back to the officers dormitory building, fighting a losing battle with her hair at the speed shes moving at the whole way.

You confidently stride into the officers dormitory, and stop at the nearest reflective surface that can accurately show your entire form. You take a few moments to straighten out your attire, and hair, before making your way to your personal study. Waiting for you inside, seated on the chair you would normally occupy, is a large man, dark brown hair and ice blue eyes. He wears a fine ebon doublet, brown breeches, and a black belt, over his heart is the emblem of the Emperors Talon, DragonsBane, the blade wielded by the first emperor, thrust through a crimson dragons skull. It is not over the traditional white heater, but a golden shield. This man is Trepilius Durian, the heir apparent. You drop to your right knee, and thrust your right fist to the ground, and drop you head in one swift motion, speechless.

The man chuckles, rise Commander Trentz, we have much and more to talk about. Beginning with the divine, the arcane, your technological advancements, and how your knowledge of the subjects compares to mine and my fathers." he motions to one of the seats, and as you sit, inclines his head for you to begin, resting his hand on a sheet, covering something that he brought with him, which sits on the floor next to the heir apparents seat.

Go over the gods, their domains, and the two pantheons for the divine topic. Elementalism, Mysticism, Arcane Magic, and our experiences with it for the arcane, and then the Repeaters, Autowagons, and Degrian for technology.

Second. Include that the gods are still weak but are growing in power. Uurlanth has the advantage over us in numbers of arcanists, and the Guilds have better trained arcanists; both appear to have developed arcanist deployment doctrines that they have already begun using on their front-line troops.

You nod "Certainly, Princeps. The gods, while comparatively weak at the moment, are steadily growing in power. I have done my best to reamin neutral to warm in my relationship with all ten of them, however a few are... less than happy with me at the moment. Each god holds domain over one of the elements, as well as several aspects of mortal emotion, or states of being that one can go through. Fire is the realm of Lamynus, the Succubus Queen, who holds domain over lust and malice; as well as Jogra, who holds domain of Friendship, retribution, the campfire and the forge." you begin, before continuing to list off all of teh gods, and their domains, as well as the five elements.

Trepilius nods "We have learned much the same, the fact that the pantheon is split in twain makes us nervous, as it could easily fall to Degnar worshiping one half, and Uurlanth the other. An unbalanced and potentially dangerous. When things are calm enough to re-establish the office of the final Praetorian, one who could walk that line would be most useful."

You nod in agreement, before continuing "In my studies I have found that Uurlanth has traditionally had more arcanists than Degnar. The different schools are the Elementalism, or control over one or more of the elements, Magic which comes in two schools, shadow and Shining; Necromancy, which is mostly related to the raising and commanding of the dead, though also includes the crafting flesh golems, and a broader school known as curses. Mysticism, which encompasses illusions and the reading or controlling of the mind; and finally, two singular talents, in Runeforging, and Arcanasmithing. I have several experts who doubtless know more than I, if you wish I can have them summoned."

My father and I were only able to find that mystics are also capable of some weak telekinesis, and that the disparity between Uurlanthi mages and Degnarian ones, in number at least, was approximately 7 to 1; where the disparity for the other schools was a more even 3 to 1. As runes seem very difficult to craft to get the desired result and not have potentionally disastrous side-effects and I only have one capable runesmith it has so far been unfeasible for me to deploy them in combat. However, she has had progress enough to inscribe magic negating runes on balista bolts. The other technological advancements are all simply taht. Repeating crossbows and balistae, mangonel with extended range, and wagons that mostly self propel."

The man nods "Perhaps it would had been better had you not used those runes in battle, runes of transference would have prevented Uurlanth from being able to re-produce said runes. As elves have a natural aversion to runes, felixsians lack the attention span to learn them, and humans the lifespan to master crafting them, the only runes Uurlanth will ever have are the ones they capture, or purchase from the Duchy, whom we will hopefully be able to prevent from doing so. As to your advancements, all but the wagons are to be withheld. My father and I feel that would be far to great an advantage to have fall into Uurlanthi hands, however the Praetorians Fists will of course be allowed access to that technology. What ideas do you have for mage hunters?" he asks, grinning mischievously as he rubs the covered stack, when he notices your eyes wander to it.

It is enameled red, and has been worked in such a way that each plate resembles a dragons scale, trimmed in black. the vambraces and tops of the gauntlets form dragons talons and forearms. The rest of the armor is lightly flecked with midnight starbursts. The inside of the armor has a light blue sheen to the steel shade, telling you that it is adamantium. "The enameling is worked into the metal, so it will not be destroyed easily, though, with your penchant for collecting scars it may not last as long as our smith promised. As to the starbursts, we thought that black with crimson starbursts would be too, cliche, considering your moniker. i was against the stars entirely, which is why the larges is no larger than the smiths thumbnail, and why they are so very sparse. Their emblem is a hammer of blood raised to strike an obsidian anvil, and at every encounter they have had arcanists in numbers comperable to those of the Uurlanthi forces I have battled recently, soldiers trained to parity with our own, and the utmost fanaticism. All I know of their plot, is that it involves necromancy, and most likely war. Neshai has agreed to aid me in my attempts to prepare for their arrival. I have found them to be well rooted within Uurlanthi, Duchy, and our own governments. So deeply that at least one important Uurlanthi Lord has been slain, and likely replaced by their pawns, and our own Third Praetorian may be their pawn as well."

I've confirmed they've been in the Duchy and the heirs of house Stant were either converted or assassinated during my campaign. Neshai detests necromancy. In her eyes, necromancers are thieves that steal what rightfully belong to her- the souls of the fallen. Necromancy forcefully remove them from her domain and bow them to their will. When a goddess tells you to your face that she has reserved a special afterlife of eternal, note the emphasis, suffering for necromancers... I suggest that you never entertain the thought. However, she does not mind necromancers who use the power of curses. When I discussed this with her, there are a few exceptions to binding ghosts to magic items, for instance, as long as they loathe what they are made to do you will not feel her wrath.

I will write a full report of my interaction with the gods, I believe that my conversations with them will prove invaluable in order for the Empire to curry their favor and not draw their ire. This is important enough that I shouldn't wait until I have my seat in office.

They have been manufacturing scenarios through which more dead than necessary would be produced, by using all sides against eachother for their goal. I can only assume they intend to raise an army of undead to take the lands of everyone involved once we are weakened by war.

The rebellion I put down as my first assignment? That was a ruse to take away as many abhumans as they could from our forces. They're in this for the long game, but each one we defeat leads us to clues, and more pressingly, training materials.

"To Neshai, the act of raising corpses, is stealing that which is rightfully hers, as the soul that was once attached to the corpse or skeleton in question is taken from her real is gone so long as the corpse is active. And when the soul is returned, it is damaged, misshapen. She makes a pastime out of eternally tormenting necromancers once they die. I will elaborate and expand on that in a more complete report on the divine for yourself and your father if you wish." the man nods "As to the cult, they are extremely skilled infiltrators, and had been censoring or destroying my missives with the Praetor Militant for some time. He purged his office of cultists after I sent riders to tell him of the cult personally. And it is he who has informed me that the 3rd is either a member, or her office is so heavily infiltrated that everything coming from it is worth questioning. And the cult is playing a VERY long game, What I have read of the captured, and decoded missives leads me to believe that their plan hinges on there being an abnormally massive ammount of fresh, and as a result easier to make more powerful once raised, corpses strewn about the continent from our war, and the nations of the land too tired to stop them. House Stant, my foes from my second campaign, has been all but wiped out by this cult, from within, as they were either standing against the cult, or no longer useful as a pawn to them. If you wish, I can provide you with the misives."

The man nods his head "That would be excellent, Commander. And now, I must return to my duties." he rises from his seat, and you rise with him, saluting, than accepting his offered hand "Live well, Legionaire..." he begins, before releasing your hand.

"And die bravely." you finish, bowing as he leaves the room.

You take one last look at your new armor, before heading out to find Janos. He is, not surprisingly, at the kennels in your barracks. "Janos, Sansa said you had news for me?"

He nods his head, turning from the brood pit of fledgling aurachnospecs to face you "And not good news, friend. It would seem the slumlord you brought to justice, Timius McClanson, was liberated from the procession to the Field of Crosses while we were at the pits yesterday. I suspect the perpetrator to be Borus Reshkai, whos house was dishonored, and cast from society not long after your argument with him at the Governors feast before you left on your last campaign. They both have common cause against you, and are not without their means, but I have no proof, unfurtuanately." he looks apologetic as he finishes, scratching the back of his head with one hand, and adjusting a mask that is not there with the other.

You cock an eyebrow "Is... is that a problem?"

Janos sighs "Perhaps not, but with all the funds of a nobleman with nothing to lose behind him, his entire network ready to do his bidding, as opposed to his two favorite thugs, and no goal in mind save making you pay, he could be more trouble than your expecting."

Now it is your turn to scratch at the back of your head "Send Daeseu after him, that elf will be able to deal with it without a fuss."

"If I am ever weak, it is in a city where I have no network, and that I do not know. If I am ever weak, I am weak now. It will not be instantaneous, and it will further slow the establishment of your network, but if you order it." Daeseu interjects, somehow in-between your right side, and the wall, and you have no idea how he got there.

Janos leaps back, hands halfway up to shield his face, frozen outwards at chest level. After collecting himself, he interjects "If the slumlord is living in the Reshkai household, he is all but untouchable. That house may have been ostracized from high society, but they are not without their influence, or gold. If it helps, think of it as a noble foe who I thought dealt with by your allies trying to bite back, although I had thought him downed and pushed off to a corner. And cornered beasts..." he trails off.

swell idea, daesu could capture, or whatever it is he does, some low level thugs and perhaps the mystic can probe his mind to find out who he reports to, get that guy and repeat until they have a list of big-shots. that should speed up daesus networking quite a bit.

"Keep working to build your network, but I do want this thug brought in. I will ensure he actually dies this time. Work with Autronius if you need, sometimes less invasive information gathering is better." you opine, remembering the Guild Lands warior you have restrained in your dungeons, to prevent him from killing himself. The assassin nods, and is gone before you can get another word in to him. "Janos, any word on your caravan?"

The man shakes his head "Still nothing, unfortunately. Why, are you considering searching for it?" he asks, curiousity obvious in his voice.

"No, I think that will be all for now, Janos." you reply, before turning back towards the officers dormitories of your barracks complex, the sun already well along its westward sojourn. Inside the building, Degrian is again working on instructions and plans for his devices.

"How can I help, commander?" he asks you, not looking up from his pad as he does so. Reaching out, seizing a small chunk of meat, barely cooked at the best, and sliding it down his throat, right hand still moving his quill along the sheet.

"I have been ordered to share all of your advancements save the autowagons with the other fists by the Praetor Militant. So the plans more understandable to those other than yourself, and more workers have become something of a priority."

Degrian makes a defeated sound, dropping the pad looking at you "Drive me mad, Commander. Must find smarter engineers to build things, can only make plans so simple." he takes another morsel from his bowel of meat and slides it down his throat. "Will do what I can." he finally adds, before returning to work. You spend most of the evening, and a good portion of the night working on your reports for the Emperor and his Son on the divine, and the Cult you have been dealing with. You are nearly ready to sign your name on it when Sansa and Jayne forcibly remove you from your study and take you to your bed. Despite your half-hearted protests, you are glad that it was a productive night.
