/tg/, the weirdest abomination was presented at the table of a game I'm in. Here are two versions of his sheet.
    http://www.privatepaste.com/e23a7e2594
    http://www.privatepaste.com/2d7ca29034

Meet PIGDOG (all-caps). PIGDOG is a gnoll two-weapon ranger in Athas. This is an urban, combat-light game that highlights noncombat resolution, and he's built as a "solve problems by bashing heads" gladiator type.

His ability scores in both versions don't match our rules for ability scores at all. His feat and power choices are totally awful. He doesn't even have Twin Strike as a ranger. He uses a longsword and a short sword, which is pretty bad for the type of ranger he's playing (Two-Weapon Fighting Style). Overall, his character is the worst fighter of the entire group even though PIGDOG is supposed to be an arena gladiator.

This is what the player had to say about him:
<PIGDOG> So I will be able to offer high damage output and mobility while the others offer other crucial benefits
<PIGDOG> If you read his sheet, he's a survivalist, a thief, and an extremely swift cavalryman
The party's little cleric-reflavored-into-psionic was a better survivalist and forager than him.

IRC drama with the DM ensued. This included:
<DM> I repeat. TL;DR - make it in theme. PIGDOG gladiator in Political Eugenics DarkSun.
<PIGDOG> I've never played a simple character. I'm FOREVER DM, and all my characters are deep, reflective stoics.
Characters who stay in the corner and brood silently?

    And ended in:
    <PIGDOG> Enjoy your weeaboo fantasy
    <otherplayer> >dark sun
    <PIGDOG> "Creativity? In MY D+D??"
    <otherplayer> >weeaboo fantasy
    <otherplayer> >pigdog
    <otherplayer> >creativity

I'm pretty sure I know the game. I'm the guy who opted out because I was a little out of touch with 4e and didn't have a good character concept. I can see how your houserules might put someone off (like any houserules might) but it sounds like this guy didn't even bother to read them.

    Besides, anyone who says:
    >all my characters are deep, reflective stoics
And then names a character all-caps PIGDOG is probably too much of an idiot to play with.
    >> Anonymous 07/03/11(Sun)17:01 No.15462739
    >>15462706
On the other hand, I will take this opportunity to point out...
    >His feat and power choices are totally awful. He doesn't even have Twin Strike as a ranger. He uses a longsword and a short sword, which is pretty bad for the type of ranger he's playing (Two-Weapon Fighting Style). Overall, his character is the worst fighter of the entire group even though PIGDOG is supposed to be an arena gladiator.
...is a big contributing factor to my leaving. I got the distinct impression you were looking for a fairly high degree of optimisation in regards to produced characters, and I simply wasn't interesting in investing time into that for a combat-light, roleplaying/narrative focused game. I can make a competent 4e character, but having been out of the game for a year or so I would have to look up a lot to make an optimal one. Besides which, I don't really like being restricted to the best power choices for everything.

Yeah, I agree with you. You don't have to pick the best everything... BUT

    >Overall, his character is the worst fighter of the entire group even though PIGDOG is supposed to be an arena gladiator.

This is beyond any excuses. It is fucking irresponsible. Know your role. The party expects you to do it, so you better be at least passable on it.

This is more and more true when you rejoice on your role and brag about it.

You know, looking over PIGDOG, it's not an unsalvageable build.

I mean, sure, no gnolls in Athas, but really the only thing it does for him is gets him Gnoll Tracker. Which he could take Expert Tracker instead.

He could re-fluff the gnoll to some other beast of athas proper.

He should probably become a marauder ranger, for the speed bonus. And what are your rules for ability scores, since his first set is a completely legal set of scores.

Mounted combat, while fluff appropriate, should be dropped for something more directly useful (especially if he does get marauder style) since he'd have speed 8.

I am confused as to why, in an "urban, combat-light game that highlights noncombat resolution" you would give two shits about whether he has twin strike or not, or what kinds of weapons he wields. Simple.

If you are a controller, you are expected to maneuver the battlefield. If you only do damage, you are failing the party as a controller.

If you are the leader, you are expected to heal and buff. If you don't, you fail the party as leader and they suffer when you fail.

As a defender you are supposed to mark and position yourself well. If you don't, your entire party suffers for it.

If you are a striker, you're expected to dish out damage quickly. Now, you don't need to be optimized for DPR... but you need to do more damage than the NON-striker members of the party. Come on, if you don't healer, control or defend, they expect you to at least dish out punishment.

I'd really like to know the kind of player who, when picking out his ranger's level 1 encounter power, cracks open Martial Power 2, takes a gander at Precise Assault, and thinks, "Wow, that's a great power!"

Besides, if anything the big difference between japanese and western gaming is style, not setting. And that's determined as much by GM as it is by source material.

Yes. Wizardry was also a big influence. Even the design of 8, 16bit sprite's big heads and oversized weapons owes to miniatures wargaming (Ogre Battle even takes place on a tabletop)

One very large difference between WRPG and JRPG's though is Miyazaki

by that I mean many themes we have as distinct of Japanese fantasy come from the influence of Miyazaki films.

Crystals, flying castles, riding birds, environmentalism, lost techno kingdoms, buried robots, airships, 'steampunk' and so on.

Even the music. Next time you watch Nausicaa, listen well and you'll see the ancestor of FF musical style

They aren't really /tg/ related. Mostly he played a lot of Xbox, was one of those PS3 HAS NO GAMES guys who hated everything but his Xbox. Was into RPG's but that was before I was into /tg/ and played stuff like KotOR for the Star Wars fights not the story or MAIIMMERSION. Um... got alienated after a few party's with people saying "look your creepy FUCK OFF" and doing some pretty off shit.

Um I know he is/was a huuuuuge furfag and RP'd on one of the more popular furfag boards, that was years back though and I dono what the board was called he just told us about it being a online forum based RPG where he played a human like fox, not nessicarly furry from description but I have seen the drawings he did of them yeah furry. Um loved telling people he was gay and informing us of the "awesome RP" he dose, where we summarily decided it was all furfag cyber and didn't wanna hear it. Thats about it sorry anon, no real story.

I believe PIGDOG could write fantasy novels about his gnoll ant centaur. They would be the fantasy equivalent of those incredibly trashy action/cop novels, like all the sexed up Da Vinci code ripoffs or the time-travelling Viking Navy SEAL romance novels or John Ringo's rapist special forces guy books.

Basically they would be the Song of the Sorcelator from Penny Arcade, but with a gnoll.

Some logs shared to us by the DM.

<PIGDOG> He's an Avenger. He was adopted as a small child
    <DM> By what?
    <PIGDOG> Monks
<DM> I ask this not to shoot you down, but to clarify something. Monks of what?
    <PIGDOG> Right
<PIGDOG> Uh, Monks of a Dead God. Probably Bryllis.
    This is Athas, you motherfucker.

<PIGDOG> The monks want him to start killing high-level targets in the established Patrician noble class
<PIGDOG> To weaken the hold of magic over the populace, this macroslavery
<PIGDOG> He is a laser-guided tyke bomb for the forces of true freedom
Putting aside LASER-GUIDED TYKE BOMB FOR THE FORCES OF TRUE FREEDOM, I'd like to point out that his character is apparently a level 5 guy being sent to kill "high-level targets" who are powerful magicians and headed by a level 25 elite sorcerer-king. I'll also point out that some of the PCs ARE from that noble class, to add to the disruptive potential.

Not really, you've seen his sheet, and if you know that I was basically looking for a hit-and-run two weapon fighter, it pretty much lived up well to my goal. Obviously, I would have preferred being able to dump cha and int for a Wisdom bonus for more control, but with his faggoty houserules, I decided to do the best I could with what I had.

And the centaurism was just a suggestion, seeing as we had already reflavored both devas and Dragonborn. I was fully prepared to see it shot down, because of the mechanical difficulties.

Anyway, this is all irrelevant. I could have played something a little more standard to the setting (I had also been tossing around a Noble Battlemind, until everyone and their mom chose the Noble Adept theme), I just wanted to try something fun.

The implication was that you were distorting the degree of adherence to source material that I uphold while playing my characters, then drawing weak conclusions based on what you would like to see happen to me in your head. A Straw Man Argument, in so many words.

    PIGDOG.

Grace. Take a bow and leave with grace.

You made obvious awful characters and sold them to the rest of the party and the DM as the best characters ever, better than theirs on everything, etc. They called on your bullshit with patience and education, enduring your trolling hoping you would come down from the crazy lands.

And then, of course, this is all the DMs faults. The setting faults. The other players. Weaboo shit and ragequit...
... just to rejoin 5s later.

    Graceful as a swan.

Sure, everyone has reasons to leave games. They aren't what you expect. The schedule doesn't fit. You don't feel good party chemistry. The DM seems to be a little quirky, but I'm growing found of him.

What nobody can do is act like you did and still claim the higher moral ground. No. You should've been kicked out of the game. Any game. With any DM.

Really, the "Force of pure dynamism" thing doesn't sound so pretentious. He's just a speedy motherfucker. I don't know why you guys are singling that one out, it really explains the character well. It's how he survives.

As for the Avenger being a "Laser guided Tyke Bomb for the forces of True Freedom"....Um, no comment. I'm perfectly able to see that that was hilariously retarded.

But it's not like he was out to kill the Emperor, just shake up the political arena by assassinating the repressive nobles of the existing regime.

Well the DM is tweaking some themes anyway... Lemme copy and paste some of the house rules.

Themes: Pick a Dark Sun theme. Noble Adept does not give you 1 free power point. Escaped Slave does not give you free Bluff training.

    Power Revision:
    Adept's Insight, Noble Adept Feature
With mental focus, you enhance the undeniability of your attacks.
    Encounter ✦ Psionic
    Free Action, Personal
Trigger: You miss with an attack roll during your turn.
Effect: You add 1 to the triggering attack roll. If the attack still misses, you do not expend this power, and you cannot use this power until the start of your next turn.
Augment 1: Effect: You instead add 1d4 to the triggering attack roll. If the attack still misses, you do not expend this power or the power point, and you cannot use this power until the start of your next turn.

New Power: A character with the Dune Trader theme can take Psionic Formation in place of Quick Formation.
    Psionic Formation, Dune Trader Feature
You weave phrenic energy into a brilliant lattice that surrounds a foe and sears it of life and vital fluids, withering the enemy as you allow your allies to move into a defensible position.
Encounter ✦ Implement, Necrotic, Psionic, Radiant
Standard Action, Melee touch or Ranged 10
    Target: One creature
    Attack: Primary ability vs. Fortitude
Hit: 1d6 + ability modifier necrotic and radiant damage, and either you shift 4 squares, or each ally within 5 squares of you can shift 2 squares as a free action.
Level 11: 2d6 + ability modifier necrotic and radiant damage.
Level 21: 3d6 + ability modifier necrotic and radiant damage.

PIGDOG is Charlie Sheen. Think about it. He's a laser-guided tyke bomb for the forces of true freedom "on a drug called PIGDOG."

    He's got gnoll blood.

I am in a channel with PIGDOG in it this very moment. The name Epictetus gives it away.

<Epictitus> If you're not here in the morning, you're all cool as shit, and when you find out session times, hit sockpaladin5@hotmail.com

Hmm, I wonder who this might be? Your handle betrays you.

I swear, this guy looks like one of those really fat, overweight, thick-lipped, hideous high school girls.

It's even funnier when you consider that he attempted to pass it off as anything but him.

    >That guy. How did he settle on that picture? Did he just have a folder full of neckbeards that he posts at random? It's not a reaction pic, not really anything. The filename betrays nothing. I am confus.

    >When all the characters are nobles with the lofty goal of freeing the slaves, it gets boring.

I'll also point out that this was ONE character in the group that PIGDOG is somehow taking to mean all of the other characters.

It's really funny that he's railing on a guy for copying Assassin's Creed, because HE WAS THAT GUY.

<PIGDOG> The monks want him to start killing high-level targets in the established Patrician noble class
<PIGDOG> To weaken the hold of magic over the populace, this macroslavery

<PIGDOG> They just have a creed, a way of life

And his last pre-PIGDOG post on /tg/?

Sure is a double-whammy of hypocrisy and strawmanning in here.

I would just like to say I'm playing Fallout: New Vegas right now and a kid in rags with a baseball bat slung over his shoulder just slid past me on his knees at running speed while making eating motions and sounds, for a good 5 seconds.

    wtf

He is jealous because he will never be like Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

I'd play a game with Pigdog. Honestly, none of his concepts really seemed that bad and probably would've worked great in game.

E-mail me, Pigdog, when you're looking for a game.

Oh wow, I just realized from the chat log that he attempted to pose as another user no less than THREE times, aiming to get back into the game.
