218 KB Zerg Quest XLIX Cerebrate Anon 07/13/11(Wed)21:20 No.15571951

I hope you all enjoyed the Which Way Game from last week.

We have brokered a non-aggression pact with the Protoss. VoidGate is dead. Cyberbrate has successfully cracked the new Confederate encryption measures. Labbrate's second batch of clones contain 32% fewer unusable deformities (it promises to work in the psionic abilities of ghosts as soon as it has the genome issues worked out). ZergTV is currently running a marathon of Indiana Zasz movies. Nuke World is up to a whopping 400 missiles, and Dapperjunior got us a polaroid of Zerg World on its way home from Aiur. The moon appears to be in a relatively stable orbit over Aiur, and without any obvious signs of habitation.

Things are looking up for the Swarm, again. We have no pressing military or political concerns. What shall we do with this moment of peace?

To start things off, what are the transmissions coming in from the Confederacy? Any good gossip/rebellions/things we can use against Kingston?

Yes. We need to know what's going on in the Confederacy.
With the broken cyphers, we need to know what the Combine is doing, and how the other two factions are responding.

Also, any word from our listening post near the UED border?
If nothing new has come up there, have them begin expanding the listening post, and send a number of SCV's and construction materials so that Cloaked Overlords can be constructed on-site.

What's the status of Cyberbrate's repairs of the Dagobah planetary computer?

    (You're welcome!)

Internbrate delicately asks whether our first request of our tenuous not-quite-friends should be to return a massive weaponized moon they don't realize was our idea.

So far, the news has mostly been speculation over whether Umoja will side with Moria or the Confederacy. Kingston's offices have basically accused the Morians of being traitors to the species.

Lutrious remains silent. Warbrate wants to know how we would like to begin exploring for UED colonies. Should we trust the map?

Cyberbrate has got most of the hardware operational, and repairs continue (it's a fucking planet, so this is slow going), but it still hasn't had time to review what databanks are usable, corrupted, protected, etc.

    Oh, yes. The overlords.

Dapperjunior has Pauldronlisk in its tow as it makes a wide, meandering warp path back to our space.

The rest of them (except where noted above) are lazily floating around Xenta.

    >> TUCAMP 07/13/11(Wed)22:32 No.15572535
We'll leave Zergworld where it is. When we assault Aiur lets crash it into the planet. As for the rumor mill in the Confederacy, we need "hard hitting political analysis" from our "crack team" hear at ZergTV to run 244 hour coverage of the possible secession movement. And lets check the outskirts of the UED map to see if things correlate.
    >> Anonymous 07/13/11(Wed)22:34 No.15572551
Look into Kingston's accusations; is he accusing the Combine of working with us, or does it have to do with the Dyles-entity?

As for Lutrious, send the materials and units required to produce a cloaking harness factory to the listening post. Once it arrives, begin the construction of Cloaked Overlords. They are to begin scouting outlying colony worlds, as according to the map. Make sure that they come out of warp at the edges of those systems, in case the map is faulty.
    >> Cerebrate Anon 07/13/11(Wed)22:40 No.15572612
Actually, the Confederacy hasn't accused Moria of collaborating with its enemies, but suggests that dividing humanity in the face of extinction from without is as treasonous as tearing down a city's walls from the inside during a siege.

The Morians seem to be suggesting that putting humanity's fate in Kingston's hands is like letting a blind man drive a crowded bus.

The map provides the coordinates for a UED planet in the Kassandris system. After creeping up from extremely deep orbit, our cloaked overlord gets within a reasonable distance. The planet and its colony are intact, but the atmosphere appears to be undergoing some sort of shift. Temperatures are obviously too high for the vegetation. The native flora are dying across the board.

There appear to be small freighters hovering in the atmosphere.

    Quite right. Apologies.

Edging a little closer, the overlord can tell that the freighters are releasing a particular mix of chemicals and gases. Labbrate informs us that human habitation of the planet will require breathing apparatuses and limited skin contact at this level, and will become more hazardous as the atmosphere continues to shift.

Right now, I'm making the assumption that Khas has enough protoss mindfuckery power and enough smart Protoss scientists/templars with him so that he could identify a zerg infestation when he can.

The merc idea might be a good idea if we can do it through many proxies, like if we can manage to infest a wealthy but scummy Terran individual who then hires a guy to look up mercs who then hires a guy to get those mercs who then hires a guy to sell a contract to those mercs... you get the idea. Or if we manage to grab a hold of a UED commander.

We might even want to pitch the idea to Kerrigan, since she is much better at these espionage things than we are. We may also want to get her up to speed with current events.

Direct some wraiths to the freighters and have them flag them down (like 6-8 or so). We need to determine if these are legitimate UED guys or if they're Dyles.... although the whole poisoning the atmosphere thing might imply a worrying evolution from the Dyles entity.

Voting 'NO' to destroying the freighters. Besides, we only have a cloaked overlord in that system.

Instead, see if the freighters or the planet surface are transmitting anything, and route those transmissions to Cyberbrate to decrypt.

Also, are there other planets to explore on the map of the UED? we should take a look at some others, see what they're doing.

Seconding these. Let's get some scouts in those other UED mapped worlds and see if we can't intercept some transmissions.

If those ships are going about without any sort of transmission, then they may be communicating using a psychic link. Or the UED has some sort of method of communicating that is very vastly different than anything in the Korpulu sector uses.

Leaving Kassandris and its unusual freighters, we send an overlord to a more distant world in the Nickenae system. We arrive just in time to witness a battle of some sort. Wraiths, battlecruisers, and several types of craft we can't readily identify are engaged in a massive firefight. It is obvious that one of the forces is in control of the planetary defenses, though they appear to be mostly inoperable.

Thankfully, nobody has detected out presence.

Also, if it's even remotely possible, try to get a look at the weapons exchange that are going on. Are the unknown craft using munitions such as missiles/torpedoes and lasers like we're used to? Or are they using completely foreign types of ordnance?
    >> Cerebrate Anon 07/14/11(Thu)00:23 No.15573690
The chatter is extensive, with a lot of signals drowning one another out. One thing we do detect a lot is an order "DO NOT LET THEM THROUGH!"

Standard weapons are in play, and we are detecting some others. The differences are primarily cosmetic in nature, but we have definitely detected a sort of tractor/repulsor weapon being used by a battlecruiser-like vessel.

Agreed. Let's get a rough estimate on what we think we might be up against. See what the enemy ships are doing and such and so forth... if we're going to intercede with a small strike force, we're only going to get one chance to make a dent in what may be Dyles' forces; we need to know what we're going to swiftly destroy.
    >> Cerebrate Anon 07/14/11(Thu)00:45 No.15573876
Both fleets are mixed, and it's impossible to tell which is broadcasting from the middle of the fray.

There are several transports in deep orbit. Every few seconds, one will barrel toward the planet, and they are mostly destroyed before they can reach the upper atmosphere, though fire from the ground has destroyed two that nearly landed.

As we continue to watch, one of the transports crashes into a metropolitan area. While it is obvious that hundreds of thousands died, Warbrate is more concerned with the hole left in the planet's defenses. A transport could easily slip through this hole if it made its way through the fight.

It supposes that our forces are strong enough to distract the defenders' ships from the hole, allowing a transport through, or to destroy the transports entirely. Either of these would be a decisive use of our forces, but would definitely constitute "picking a side."
    >> TUCAMP 07/14/11(Thu)00:46 No.15573882
From Zerg Quest XLI "three space sectors, each the size of the entire Koprulu Sector, plus outlying colonies," granted that is probably an incomplete map.

The more forces we can pump out, the better defended our worlds would be.
However, even if the UED is fighting off Dyles now, we shouldn't underestimate them. They will not look kindly upon us taking over their former worlds, and they would still have the numbers to crush us.

I think we should send a wing of Wraiths and a Cloak Overlord to Kassandris, and do an intensive scan to check if the freighters are controlled by Dyles. If they are, blow them out of the sky, and prepare to go down to the planet and take over the colony. Search for UED survivors, and do not Infest them. We need to appear as a neutral faction, for now.

The Dyles entity is already our enemy, while the UED can be our erstwhile ally, for now. We can be the USSR to the UED's USA, while we tag-team Dyles-Germany in this analogy.

    >> Anonymous 07/14/11(Thu)00:57 No.15573988

Cerebrate Anon, do those freighters in deep orbit match the ones that were dumping toxic materials into the Kassandris system?
Judging from what we saw from the last system, those transports were venting toxic substances into the atmosphere for some reason. The Dyles entity, as far as we know, can warp regular joe humans to an extent to make them horrendously strong and able to match zerg units in melee combat (to an extent). It isn't too much of a stretch to imagine them developing resistance/immunity to certain types of substances that would kill regular humans.

The whole bit about the freighters being used as weapons is a bit confusing. If the UED are desperate enough to purge a planet, they might resort to slamming freighters into major population centers to destroy enough Dylepeople. But they'd probably have missiles and nukes to toss around that would probably do a better job of that. And come to think of it, why would they even bring freighters into an active warzone or launch freighters for defense?

Dyles, on the other hand, has not been observed using any sophisticated weaponry aside from using ships to infiltrate areas where the parasite can infect new hosts. Infection or "consumption" of new bio-material seems to be its #1 priority. Freighter-bombing seems to be right up their alley.

The Honorable Representative wishes to know why the Terran Union of Construction and Manufacturing Personnel abstains.
    >> Anonymous 07/14/11(Thu)01:01 No.15574015

On the other hand, those freighters gassing Kasswhateveritscalled might be trying to poison the planet to make it uninhabitable to any Dyles-sustaining organisms. If the colonies are still intact, then perhaps that means that the colony was already deemed infected and/or was already cleaned out. And to starve the Dyles entity out, all remaining life on that planet would have to be exterminated.

    So many unknowns! Ahhh!

Warbrate takes a moment from organizing the strike to admire the political mess that this battle represents: it is sending its full expeditionary force into battle against what it assumes is an invasion force headed by a group similar in psionic composition to itself in order to assist what it assumes is a different species, run by a government it has never encountered, whose cousins are its greatest enemies. Warbrate isn't sure if that's irony, but thinks it ought to be.

The scourge lead the charge, disabling several transports by surprise. The other units arrive behind, mercilessly pounding the remaining ships. As soon as the strike begins, though, we detect warp engines spooling up throughout the system. Before even half of the transports are out of commission, the rest of them jump away, along with approximately half of the combatant forces.

There is a brief moment of confusion over the calm, and silence in space, as the remaining forces try to work out what just happened, but they soon realize we are here. Warbrate warns that our forces cannot possibly survive a confrontation.
    >> Anonymous 07/14/11(Thu)01:04 No.15574046

Uhh... this is a bit of a long shot... but are there any disabled vessels that are way out of the way with any detectable signs of life on them?

I was thinking that if we can find a barely conscious survivor on one side, we could discreetly infest him/her and gain some insight on the situation.

Warp out, and make a direct line to Kassandris. Scan the freighters there, see if they're full of neuro-parasites or not.
If not, random-walk back to our listening post. If they are infected, blow them out of the sky before returning to Lutrious, leaving behind a small ground force to check the colony for survivors.

Oh, and as we warp out of the Nickenae system, broadcast on an open frequency, using basic English: You owe us one.

    >> Cerebrate Anon 07/14/11(Thu)01:25 No.15574231
Scans are inconclusive in Kassandris. We haven't been able to detect the parasites from afar in the past.

We pull our forces out of Nickenae with an ominous "You owe us one." Gorn chuckles at this.
    >> Anonymous 07/14/11(Thu)01:30 No.15574278

Also, aim for the engines first, disable any methods of escape that they may have.

Board them with some subtly-infested marines (no fleshy bits poking out of the visor or peeking through huge rents in that tough armor). Get any valuable data off the computers, etc. etc.

If the crew resists us with enough force to bludgeon power-armored infested humans to death, then we know that it's Dyles. If the crew is able to be subdued, try to scan them for any signs of infection. If they're human, we should probably interrogate them then let them off. Maybe even fix up the engines.

We don't have tractor beams available. It's possible to damage a ship's engines enough to prevent faster-than-light travel, but it's a delicate thing. You'd have to do a skill check (/tg/ dice have been kind before, but they are a fickle mistress. Beware!).

    >> Anonymous 07/14/11(Thu)01:48 No.15574457

    I *guess* we can.

Let's have some wraiths flag them down and accost them.

Hey wait, we can essentially see through any Zerg creature, right? Do we have some sort of parasite that we could attach to the freighters with our Overlord that could act as a crude tracking device? If they flee after our wraiths ask them what the hell they're doing, we might be able to trace to where the freighters are fleeing to. Or we could just try to chase them with our fleet, whichever works.
    >> Anonymous 07/14/11(Thu)01:49 No.15574461
Sure, we might as well try. Our initial plan was to blow them to constituent particles anyway.
Let's roll to disable FTL drives; if it works, we check and make sure that the freighters are crawling with neuro-parasites before we burn them all.
If it doesn't work...we still send some ground troops to check out the colony.

A single wraith appears in the Kassandris system. It comes to a halt in the space above one of the freighters, and hails the same. It is met with silence.

Nothing happens for a few minutes, until a battlecruiser arrives in the system. We notice a strange weapon mounted on the ship before it launches a parcel of unusually charged blue plasma bound together by some sort of netting. We attempt to dodge, but the netting catches on the ship, ruptures, and the spread of plasma out of the parcel engulfs the aft of the ship. Everything shuts down. As the ship drifts through the dissipating plasma, we notice the cruiser matching course, in the telltale process of docking with a derelict fighter. We notice lights flickering and the docking bay doors stuttering when the plasma touches the ship.

Fortunately, the plasma fades fast enough for us to regain power. Mere seconds before we would have been captured, our wraith jumps out of the system.

Whoever is poisoning Kassandris has technologies we have never seen before, and is in the mood to take prisoners.
