A pall of dread hangs in the air both groundside and shipboard. You’ve roused Burr, Kara, Dai and Tynes for now along with all of the ground crew to take stock. Diagnostics eventually complete and the situation is laid out: Whatever it is has been eating through the containment seals on all suits except those of Fie, DuBois, and Ivanova. In the short span of three hours it ate completely through Erella’s glove and roughly thirty percent of the way through the others topside.

You immediately moved them back into the radiation-filled zone inside the base. An hour later you run diagnostics again and the suit seals remain, thankfully, unchanged. In the meantime you have a drone pilot the hover tank containing Erella’s corpse away and lance it from orbit, atomizing the area and (hopefully) ensuring the confinement of the bioweapon to the inside of the research base.

“This is... I just don’t even know, Captain.” Burr sits heavily in the sensor officer’s chair. The pudgy man wipes the sheen of sweat from his brow with a shaking hand, “I just, I mean, my specialities are cybernetics and trauma. The ship isn’t equipped for this, Captain. I’m not sure ANY ship is. The base designed to prevent it wasn’t even equipped for it.”

    “Surely you have some ideas?”

“I just don’t know. Kara and I will look at the information that’s been dug up, I’ll try to think of something. But from what I’ve been able to tell from what the Lieutenant found this was some kind of alien microbe they discovered that was naturally extremely hardy and nearly universally deadly... before they started trying to make it into a weapon.”

“I see. Anything else to report?” you ask, addressing the ground team now.

“I took the liberty of using the keycard on the vaults below, sir.” Ivanova responds, “It appears he only had access to one. I used a monitor to view the inside through cameras and found more improvised cryopods and a large number of what appeared to be biowar research samples they tossed aside in haste to climb in. I thought it best to refrain from actually unsealing the vault upon seeing that.”

“What should we do, sir? Course of action?” Rinn concludes, asking the question everyrone is no doubt thinking.

    >Well?

    I have honestly no Idea.

Obviously the virus won't get worse if we open the vault, so just open it. If we're lucky, the biowarstuff lying around there is part of the Decon-kit that was being talked about in the data we collected.

We also need to keep scouring the archives, and probably send down more drones already to establish a connection down to the core-Computer.
Imho, If we are to find anything, it's within the core computer. Can we establish a connection down there using massive amounts of drones to function as relais?
(At this point, human lives are at stake, no matter how many drones we gotta use, we should try it)
So objective for now, primary: Hack the mainframe, no matter how.

Is there any difference in the suits of the unaffected that could account for their resistance to the weapon?

Remember to give Erella a proper funeral at a less strenuous time. I guess a void burial is now impossible, but we could simulate one with an empty coffin.

One of the other projects seems to have had something to do with extending lifespans or something (I think). It's part of what's keeping the virus alive (I think). Honestly if I'm remembering correctly then if we can find something to neutralize whatever is keeping all those liquids in liquid form then the virus should die within a few hours (maybe).

    >> Anonymous 08/15/11(Mon)19:42 No.15950259
Alright, first off the radiation seems to inhibit the growth of the virus. Have the people who are showing suit damage back into the facility, the people who aren't stay outside. This time make sure that everyone keeps checking their suit integrity to monitor the progression of the virus (sadly that seemed to have gotten ignored last thread, leading to Erella's death, so it will probably get ignored this time too). In the mean time, we need to start looking for the cure. We have that card, we should use it. Remind everyone NOT to touch the liquids that contain a virus that we know eats through containment.
    >> Bishop 08/15/11(Mon)19:43 No.15950275
I have one other idea. For this I need a few answers:

    a) can we release radiation inside our shuttles?
    b) can we improvise an ad-hoc decontamination-station on a remote location on the moon? One that is on par with our own? Could we for example, strip one of our shuttlebays for the decontamination equipment?

If yes, then we could get a drone carrying the virus (rub it in with liquid to be sure) on one of the shuttles, have the virus be dormant, ship it to the remotely-operated decontamination facility we improvise on the moon, and then TRY OUT the decon procedure.

If we're lucky, it works and our deconequip is sufficient to get our guys back on board.

If we're not, then nothing happens, we lost decon equipment, but that won't matter.

    >>15950295
I believe a report by the scientists in the facility said that there was a problem with the virus in that it killed so quickly that it inhibited its ability to spread. there was plans to attempt to slow it's speed in the next phase but we don't know if they actually did that or not. It may be that the only thing keeping the virus alive is the effect of that anti aging/decay project.

Vedibere, is it possible to set up a makeshift quarantine room or use a shuttle to that effect? The message we got when we were first checking the moon out, before we decided to go in said that the cryopods of the research team were on the lowest level, which seems to indicates that they expected at least some of the team to be uninfected. If we could thaw some of them out it could be very helpful, but we really can't risk doing so on the ship, so is there any way to set up a temp quarantine room on the surface?

Are we dealing with a VIRUS or a SINGLE CELLED ORGANISM?

if it is a mircro organism, our chemist should be able to help us find something to either react with its cell membrane (yay chemistry!) or something that will simply bind with the membrane and hopefully disable the cell.

If we can find the actual data on the damned thing, that is.
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 08/15/11(Mon)20:29 No.15950727
Eight hours pass, during which time you ship down a few hundred drones with some ‘specialty’ gear of your own devising. The search of the non-sealed portions of the labs concludes fruitlessly, at least for the ground team. Reams of data pass back to the two feverishly working doctors in medbay, though, and Burr assures you that while he doesn’t have a solution he’s at least up to speed on some of the particulars. The ground team is beginning to fray, however. Rinn and Ivanova remain calm and collected, but the relatively inexperienced Ensigns have become noticeably frustrated with the lack of progress and slightly snippy. The threat of imminent descending death can do that, you suppose.

There are bright spots, however. The entire team, both topside and in the labs, continue to show no new decay on the suits. Their onboard food, water, and power supplies will last another six days at the current rate, so there is that. And best of all....

The drone plan worked. You weren’t sure at first and when you started using field repair weld-spikes to bolt drones to the sides of the elevator shafts it seemed insane, but it worked. You now have a continuous and functioning link all the way to the computer core itself. And the lower level too, of course.

And given the radiations effect of neutralizing the ability of the NAMTER microbes to eat through containment seals. I have to wonder, if we pressurized a room with breathable air and unfroze one of the people in the crypods who wasn't already trying to rip their eyes out, would the effects of project SCION render that person immune to the effects of the radiation in the room while the radiation halted the effects of NAMTAR on their body?

Okay, your call. Timeskipping two days. I had thought you might want to have the ground team doing something during that time, but I guess not.

    ###############

Dai finally finishes converting the shuttles, calling them "adequate, but inefficient" and you set off. You've already transported all of the cryopods to the landing site so the loading is swift, and the launch to space even quicker.

The defrosting, however... goes less well. Within a minute of each pod being opened you begin to see the telltale bleeding. Even worse, before the post-thaw shock wears off the subjects are already clawing their eyes and shrieking, a horrific mimicry of Erella's demise two days prior. As Burr and Ivanova predicted, the decontamination -- even the flame and radiation -- seems to have little to no effect.

Moreover, just an hour after the first subject is unsealed you get a warning signal from one of the fitted seals isolating the "decontamination" section in the shuttle from the rest. Another three and a full breach has progressed. No corrosion of unisteel, metal, or glass but the complex super-durable polymers that act as flexible sealants around small areas are eaten through rapidly.

By the fifth hour after loading the pods into the shuttle there are no lifesigns remaining.

We don't want someone who is viable for this test, we want someone who is infected. If they aren't infected the SCION won't be there to possibly prevent the radiation from killing the person.

    Vedibere, a few questions.

    1) Does our ship have the capabilities to heal people of radiation poisoning?

    2) How harmful were the radiation levels on the highest level of the facility? Low enough that it wouldn't immediately kill someone exposed to it?

    3) How durable are the under suits beneath the heavy armor to radiation? And do they themselves allow for breathing without external atmosphere?

    4) If not, could we construct a makeshift airlock on the highest level of the facility?

Depending on these facts, I propose something similar to this:
    >>15951798

We ask for a volunteer who has the contamination on them. They go to the highest level where the radiation is lowest (and possibly survivable?). There they strip off the eroded armor, down to the underarmor. Then they themselves are checked to see if the contamination has gotten any deeper than that. If they are fine, then we move them to a shuttle quarantine, with oxygen and food. If after however long it's supposed to take, (several hours or so, wasn't it?), they have no signs of infection, then we move ahead.

Because of the anti-aging bug. It's not a "keep people alive" bug, it's a "don't let the stuff decay" bug. The main bioweapon kills people through other means, it doesn't care about damaging blood cells. Quite true. Given what we've seen it could have some incredibly nasty effects on neural tissue. Does it attack the brain through the optic nerves? Or does it spread through the body, reach the brain and only then the real fun begins?
Short of an autopsy it'd be difficult to find out but that would expose whoever does it to even more contamination. We still need more information and as Vedibere has said we need to narrow our search parameters to give our people a chance of finding something.

Think we did already, but just in case.

Couldn't find anything else of note, but I'll keep digging.
Anyhow, killing off SCION should be easier as not only is it man made here and should be better documented. but it should also be far less resilient (to something) as it wasn't a military weapon.

The hell were both of these being developed here anyway they have nothing in common, and SCION seems like it'd be more at home in a core system in the most expensive lab possible, while the plague is the one that would need to be hidden in the ass end of nowhere.

Either way, if we have the research data killing SCION seems most possible and would likely take far less time, which should leave the xeno plague a touch more vulnerable maybe even to the radiation. Also, the only decon/cure we'll find will be for that, as I can't see them having the anti virus to immortality.

next up, we have a crapton of lab to search, the lab level being the one with all the important data, on things like the structure of the two bugs, which would give hints on how to destroy them.

talk to the civilian chemist he could check and see what would cause a reaction with the cell walls that'd unravel them.

This is a research lab, right? You guys know what research labs [and medical facilities] generally have in abundance? CLEANING SUPPLIES THAT KILL SHIT.

Right now our priority is not to cure infected persons, but to sanitize our exo suits to extract our people.

1)Sodium hypochlorite [attacks cellular membranes and breaks them down] (bleach!)

we should be able to find this in storage areas (perhaps in solution, perhaps in a powder/concentrated form), this shit is generally used in a VERY diluted form to kill EVERYTHING. Up the concentration as high as we can and dip/spray/scrub the exo suits and a room.

-We have a STILL that is clearly producing powerful alcohol ON OUR SHIP. combine that with anything we find down there (search specifically around lab areas and in them, there should be scrub areas and wall-mounted dispensers with the shit) and we should easily find/produce enough to dip/spray/scrub the suits and possibly a small room.

You're all dragging it out longer than it needs to be. This is why we're in this mess in the first place, people wasted Vedibere's time with pointless questions and debate and obsessing over every little detail.

Just defrost the remaining scientists in cryo in an irradiated area. The radiation will keep the virus dormant, and the anti-aging thing will keep the radiation from hurting them. They can then tell us how to fix this mess and we can move on with the quest.

Let's just do it, search for a SCIONkiller, search the corresponding labs, thoroughly, use drones, use the people on the ground, search the office of the head scientist as well. He went there, probably for that exact reason. Rip out walls, tear apart the tables and whatever there is, we search thoroughly those two areas.

    >> Anonymous 08/15/11(Mon)23:10 No.15952517
Seeing if we can kill Scion is our NUMBER ONE priority.

If we can do that, then we'll be way ahead of the curve.

Now, if we can kill it, then a great, and I mean FANTASTICALLY great test would be to kill Scion on the upper level, where there is still live blood and stew. If we kill it there, then we're left with basic Namtar in a radiated environment. Now, Namtar is supposed to have what, 33 second life cycle?

If we can kill the Scion, then observe the Namtar in the irradiated zone, where it is dormant, we can see if it would be viable to try, and I mean it heavily here, TRY to unfreeze the infected in low radiation zones.

Now that would require a few big breaks though. The first being that we can kill Scion. The second being that while in the irradiated zone, without Scion, the Namtar would go through it's standard lifecycle and die. Third being whether or not those infected with Namtar would survive the process.

That's a lot of ifs. But it seems like a possibly solution if every one of those steps goes well.

I'd say scion is by far the more important though, since it's technically the one that made namtar so bad.

basically if we kill namtar but not scion we'll be bringing scion back onto the ship where it will spread. now someone happens to have space-flu when scion was spreading, all of a sudden everyone on the ship is getting space-flu forever.

actually it's just that Ivanovas armor has never been outside the highly irradiated lab since exposure, the others were, the key thing about killing scion though, is that namtar is only viable for ~33 seconds outside the body, so kill scion and namtar dies off too quickly to make it through the suit.

We hope that's the case, but we can't be sure. We don't know that Namtar wasn't capable of killing everything in this facility even without Scion. Namtar might be capable on feeding on something the seals are made of and multiplying, which would be why it was capable of what it did to this facility. If we can have someone try that access card on other doors we might open up a research or data storage area (ignoring the cryo-vaults for now, since they may be very compromised).

My overall thoughts are that we need to find as much possible about Scion, and focus on eliminating it (or what methods do so) since it seems to be the cause of Namtar's unnatural longevity.

Specifics: Attempt to hack computers (possibly mainframe if that is necessary)
Check keycard against other doors in the Scion research area.
If possible, get a drone camera up against a microscope and look at some of the liquids that haven't evaporated. If there's some water we'll start with that as it is the simplest (and easiest to detect oddities from).

If we hadn't rushed things and ignored all the people saying "keep an eye on the glove, check up on it, don't let it out of the radiation" then we wouldn't have lost Erella.

Time skipping is the same as rushing things, and rushing things at this point just invites disaster. Hell, it always did.

Lot of assumptions there. There's no indication that killing Scion would have stopped Namtar from killing everyone in the facility.

Like I said before if >>15953236 is true then it won't matter if we don't have a cure for Namtar because they'll be able to give us the passcodes for the facility and we can go and get the one they were working on and get into their database without endangering ourself trying to hack it.

    “Find anything?”

“Not yet, but...” Ivanova trails off, crouching and running her hand over a unisteel floor panel. Standing again, she turns to you and steps carefully over the scientist’s body. “I think I have something. Some of my scans are showing a possible false floor there. May I have the keycard? I think I saw a slot between the panels.”

“I didn’t detect anything.” you say, sliding the card from the receptacle on your drone’s side,

In response she shakes her head, “You probably just did not scan it from close enough. It is very well shielded, I did not pick it up the first time through either.” She steps back over and crouches down again, bringing the keycard to one of the lines where two of the plates meet. “Now, let us see.”

The key slides in smoothly and there is a brief humming before the entire plate pops up an inch, the movement and rush of air causing both of you to jump. Well, only proverbially for you, and more of a leap back into a fighting stance for her. You both watch silently as the plate rotates upward, revealing a small sealed compartment beneath it with a single uplink jack in the center. You move forward and drop a lead, hooking in and taking several minutes to defeat the security. It’s, well ‘good’ would be the understatement of the century. Still, you were designed for electronic warfare with other EIs and it is unable to resist you for long.

A sharp click echos throughout the room, causing you to turn toward Ivanova and nod. Your XO steps forward and, after seizing the handle, pulls the door open to reveal the treasure trove beneath. And what a treasure trove it is.

Inside the compartment is sectioned into five segments covered in clear glass, the first one catching your eye being the cryofrozen compartment with lines of small vials within. Each is labeled with a number and name; SCION, NAMTAR, SHIVA, ADVENT, THRESHOLD, and MIDNIGHT among others. But the one that catches your attention is labeled “SCION K2X9-Terminant”.

It’s almost enough to distract you from the rest, but not quite. Another compartment contains several folders stamped “Auth: Principality/V-access req” surrounded by what are instantly recognizable as incendiaries. The third several pictures and pieces of jewelery. The fourth a folder marked “Research Notes; Auth: Angel/III” and the final a small device that looks like a small, handheld oval sphere with a black button on one end. On each compartment is a jack much like before.

You feel the tense pull of excitement at the new find. Excellent. You drift the drone forward and drop a lead, intending to unlock the various compartments, but Ivanova’s hand shoots out and snatches it from the air. Your servos whirr around to focus optics on her and she slowly releases her grip. ”I- I am sorry, Ged. I did not mean to. I...” she stands quickly, her voice hoarse as she continues, “I need to step outside.”

She quickly turns and darts out of the room, almost running.

Get that terminant analyzed and reproduced and distributed. Find out if it has vaccine properties, or if it has to be injected after exposure. Hopefully the first considering how quickly the disease acts.

It's not a vaccine, it's presumably for getting rid of SCION, which is the anti-aging bug that's keeping NAMTAR going. It will help get rid of any hostless NAMTAR, but it won't save anyone already infected.

But we won't know until we find out more.

We're not the most intelligent of people sometimes.

    "Just gently bump them."

I think it has to do with the degree of separation we have here. We're not ACTUALLY in a scenario where our every decision costs lives. If things go bad, we can just close the tab and do something else. So there's not much incentive to be perfect.

If these secrets really ARE about her, then it's iffy ground. On one hand, we could learn about it and then disable the security protocols in her head, freeing her up to be who she wants to be, and making her infinitely more useful to us. On the other, we might trigger a killswitch.

Considering that she led us to this system as best as she could, she probably wants us to read those files.

You spend 10 times more time working on this stuff than anyone does reading it, so what may seem obvious to you is very subtle to us, and what seems subtle to you is buried within the text to us.

I know. I've DMed a lot over the past couple years, and fell victim to the same thing. I would mention a plot-important object several times and my players wouldn't notice until the 10th time. Similarly I would subtly mention a plot-important object once or twice and no one would ever notice at all.

If not: Examine security footage/records/whatever to see if we can determine which people in the cryo-pods AREN'T infected. We should apply the terminant to the room and sterilize the area, making it safe to open the pods whos' occupants are clean. We can then evac them for questioning.

I think our immediate priority should be investigating that terminant, and if possible, replicating it.
Check any files related to it, and see how much we need to kill what amount of Scion, and start in on getting the Namtar de-scioned.

I'm assuming we'll have time to look at other encoded information while our trained staff looks at the chemistry side of things.
After the priority of dealing with Scion + Namtar's abomination love-child, I would like to look into the Angel project.
While research is going on, let's have someone (possibly Ivanova) gather together a microscope (there has to be one somewhere around here!), a small sample of liquid from a drink, and get a space set up to for testing the terminant after the research is done.

Yeah, even if we fail, a poetically tragic ending would be nice. Everyone's dead. We're low on power. Our hull is torn to hell. We limp on sublight travel for eons, heading straight for Sol, trying to find out anything. And when we get there it's gone. Enveloped by the sun going supernova, ages before we arrived. We're the last man in the universe. We have no mouth, and we must scream.

Use the terminant to make the pod room safe again. Then we can open the pods of the uninfected.

You turn back to the secret compartment, dropping the lead once again. One by one you click open the four not rigged to detonate, leaving the cryofrozen compartment shut until you need to retrieve the tiny vial. Instead you go for the research notes folder, a quick browse giving you the most interesting points:

    >Project SCION Date: 0
Project guidelines delivered. Average non-cyb life expectancy of current public gene mods @ 1000, private 2200. Directive plans to improve by 50%. Optimistic, likely only 30% to 40%. Additional measures requested as per -REDACTED- as well.

    >Project SCION Date: 67
Reciprocal analysis of fundamental constituents remains elusive, but success has been achieved in the areas of semi-autonomous molecular reconstitution and selective bonding. Should allow for bonding with any alien or human subject.

    >Project SCION Date: 93
Additional measures implemented. Deterioration from radiation, heat, disease, and unrestricted chemical attack eliminated. Researchers found small deficiency in protein structure during work, took steps to obfuscate as per -REDACTED-.

    >Project SCION Date: 143
Project directives progressing. -REDACTED- progressing in parallel.
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 08/16/11(Tue)03:00 No.15954218
    >Project SCION Date: 212
Unexpected levels of longevity achieved in smaller celled creatures. Projection estimates approach infinity @ 1. Team B assigned to curtail tendency in addition to primary objective.

    >Project SCION Date: 285
Final stages. Unharmed by any level of radiation, hostile chemical reaction, or vacuum. Compliance with -REDACTED- also met. -REDACTED- assessed Longevity side-effects not yet addressed but not required for testing. Beginning tests in Project Lab 2. Vial of -REDACTED- constituted by Team B as per specifications of -REDACTED-. Vial stored in office.

Along with the dated notes are several test logs and charts showing a marked improvement in longevity with the new vaccine and trial data showing it overriding existing gene-mods for longevity seamlessly.

    Hmmm.

You turn to the final clear case and give it a measuring appraisal. The leads on the bomb around it connect directly to the link-jack, making the implications obvious. But you’ve seen no reference to the “terminant” at all, nor any sort of application instructions or dosage. At least, not in the form of anything but that damn -REDACTED-.
