My contribution is a little game about robotic samurai called Electric Katana:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?tkx4md16hlfp458

Electric Katana is a game about robotic samurai in feudal Japan using Creation, Electricity and Samurai. It can be played with as few as one player and a GM. Each player controls one robotic kashira and its human creator (called a tayu) as they wander the land fighting deadly monsters. The game is primarily about the complicated relationship between the kashira and its creator and the sacrifices one is willing to make for the other.

The kashira becomes a more powerful fighter as love develops between it and its tayu, but only when the tayu takes the kashira out of battle rather than risk permanently injuring it. This act hurts the tayu's honor, which he must keep up in order to remain active and alive. This same love makes it more difficult to force the kashira to "get back up" after being clobbered. However, it is much easier to lose honor than to gain it, and the game mechanics ensure that the kashira will be damaged beyond repair if it fights too many times.

Will you destroy your creation for the Emperor?

So I had to spend all day packing for a trip, and I don't have it written all up in a nice format but I have the basic idea written down as notes, just none of the fluff+"Target Number" for various skills.

Shit, forgot to remove the 3d100.

I am really tempted to combine the six, though. Throw Samurai + Conquistador + claws and Politics + Curiousity + Business totether, and you've got a dystopian future where secret societies of Samurai and Conquistador are in competition trying to eliminate a Werewolf conspiracy that has seized power from the halls of politics and business.

    "INSISTENT ACQUISITIONS"

    Themes:
    - Old clashing with new: Conquistadors and Samurai sides both show an unusual combination of old world and new world sensibilities and ideas, not to mention the oddity of old school psychowerewolves in modern business positions
    - Masked Cruelty: Because the Werewolves can hide perfectly in society, the game will have a focus dealing as much with investigation as with combat. Is that businessman putting small companies out of business and firing employees for fun because of the predatory instincts of a Werewolf, or because he's just a douche?

So the general idea was I ripped off GUMSHOE more than I had hoped (I only found that out after I looked at my Trail of Cthulhu book and realized I stole every idea from it)

The group is given 60 build points to create their character. Every increase costs 1 point, this includes HP and sanity. You can also buy weapons for 2-8 build points (depending on quality).

    Sanity also gets +1d6.

A purpose is something like "maintaining roads" or "making pizza". They're supposed to drive you into adventure. Ie, if you are a pizza making bot, and there are materials for making pizza being guarded by the DEVILHELL MUTANT, avoiding the DEVILHELL MUTANT entirely and not even attempting to make that pizza means your programming has a bug. Lose SAN. Possibly go bananas (penalty to all skill pools)

The skillpool is supposed to represent limitations in algorithms. Not every algorithm is perfect, so while you might one time be able to use GEOGRAPHY skill to find a perfect path between city ruins A and city ruins B, your algorithm might not be suited to find a proper path from C to D. In this spirit, you can NEVER retry a roll, but that's okay because even failure should advance the plot.

The only way to recharge skillpools is by finding batteries. Batteries are VERY FUCKING RARE.

Data repositories give unique skillpools like BIOLOGY, GENETICS, and ADVANCED PROGRAMMING, so once you find them you can start to rebuild society. After finding one, the game is supposed to change from "scavenging the post apocalypse" to creating a new master race civilization.

I got haberdashery+pirates+demons. Perhaps a demon infused haberdashery worker using infernal powers and summoning demons to protect his shop. Gain loot by killing pirates and then selling it to the local hood rat who hangs out behind your store. You can also buy new weapons to defend yourself should you run out of power. Conserve your powers as the pirates attack. The GM controls the demons and pirates and the players work as haberdashery workers.

Using a skill: Spend X points, roll 1d6+X. If X beats the TN, you succeed. Most TNs are 3-4.

Some example TNs I had: using LANGUAGE(ENGLISH) to determine a message (Fuck You) is ENGLISH and that it is composed of a verb/adverb/everything else and a Pronoun = TN 3. Bonuses! At TN 4, you know the definitions of the words used. at TN 6, you can figure out the context "Fuck you" = an insult, not a proposition.

You wanna build a small generator? make a TN 4 STRUCTURE BUILDAN check to see if you would know how. Then somebody does a SCAVENGE check (TN 3 = "inadequate parts, +1 to TN, TN 4 = "adequate", +0 TN, TN 5="Appropriate parts", -1 to TN, TN 6 = "Perfect parts", -2 to TN). to actually BUILD it, it's TN 3 + whatever parts you find (perfect parts = TN 1, you can always build it)

and that's basically all I had... sorry /tg/, I failed this time IMHO

I got Inventor, Chainsaw, and Spaceship, so I was going for something rather brutal, covered with duct tape, and in space. The result was a combination of Red Faction and Dead Space. There's an uprising on a mining colony and an secret outbreak of a virus that transforms people into horrible insect-like abominations. I finished the Player's Guide Sheet, but I couldn't get past the GM's guide or the Invention system, where there would be rules to duct tape lasers to chainsaws and make makeshift shotguns. Oh well, it was fun nonetheless.

Baseline mechanics: Simple opposed 2d6 + bonus roll. Maximum bonus in any area of +7, not possible to get a negative bonus. To further cement a character's skill in the area, they get Die-Rerolls. A Die reroll is the option to pick up one of your two die and reroll it. You can have multiple Die rerolls for a single roll, if necessary picking up and rerolling a single die several times while leaving the other one in place.

Combat should be necessarily dangerous, to encourage players to engage in the investigative aspect of their target first, rather than charge in, laserkatanna or plasmaflintlocke blazing.

Statistics as given to the characters are:
    Melee skill
    Ranged skill
    Reaction
    Mobility
    Resilience

Combat is exceptionally abstracted out, not using grids or anything of the sort. Instead each character involved in the combat has two actions, one 'movement' based action, and one 'combat' based action. Movement options are:

    - Engage: You close with an enemy to allow you to engage them in melee combat. Roll an opposed mobility test, if you beat your opponent you are able to engage them in melee combat in your combat action. If you do not beat them you may not engage them in combat.
    - Take cover: You find somewhere that provides additional protection. Roll a mobility check and subtract 10. If the result is positive that is your bonus to defending against ranged attacks until your next turn.
    - SURPRISE: Only available in the first turn of combat, and then only available to whoever made the first offensive move (if both sides were prepared for the fight, SURPRISE may not be used). Roll mobility opposed by the enemy's reaction value

    "ORBITAL BREWERY"

On the far side of Jupiter, the brewmasters of the Io Brewing Corporation compete to produce the best Ionian Space Mead for shipment to Earth, each using their custom-crafted tools to gather and distill the mead from rare Ionian silicates. Every master has their own recipe which they guard jealously, but years of brewing have made them old and tired. The fumes from the silicates are causing them to forget their most precious secrets, day by day, and the long-held grudges are finally on the verge of boiling into violence.

I'm going to write this up in a word file; I've got a few interesting mechanics to work in.

Forgot to include the second half of surprise.

    - SURPRISE: Only available in the first turn of combat, and then only available to whoever made the first offensive move (if both sides were prepared for the fight, SURPRISE may not be used). Roll mobility opposed by the enemy's reaction value. If the difference is a positive value in the SURPRISErs favour, they receive that bonus to their attack roll that turn. A successful SURPRISE also counts as engaging the enemy in melee. As you can see, SURPRISE is very dangerous.

    Combat actions are:
    - Melee: Roll your Melee skill opposed to your opponent's Melee skill. If your opponent wins, no damage. If you tie or beat your opponent's roll, add your weapon damage value (if applicable) to the difference and apply this damage (damage explained later)
    - Range: Must be equipped with a ranged weapon to use this. Roll your ranged weapon skill opposed by your opponent's reaction (+ any benefits from Take Cover). If you win, apply damage as shown above in Melee combat.

Resilience is basically hitpoints, with values of 20 for relatively weak PCs, up to 50 for tough ones. Werewolves typically have a Resilience value of 60 or so.

Character creation is made up of three stages.

    STAGE 1: Stats

    As stated, the stats are:
    Melee skill
    Ranged skill
    Reaction
    Mobility
    Resilience

These stats have values between 0 and 7 (except Resilience, which will be explained in the end). 0 is shitty, 1 is an average person, 7 is fuckawesomesuper. Characters have 20 points to distribute between these stats.

Resilience is done differently. Resilience starts at 15, but for every single stat point you drop it in, your resilience increases by 5.

    STAGE 2: Unique Strengths.

I'll assemble a list later, but these will basically be a list of feats. The character chooses three, which determine when they will receive a Die Reroll as previously mentioned.

    STAGE 3: Tech

In the fight between Conquistadors and Samurais against their foes the Werewolves, the tiebreaker is in technology. The two types of characters get access to different types of tech, but they are basically broken down into four areas. Melee offense, Ranged offense, Defense and Investigation. I'll need to put thought into how this goes, but my current idea is that you get given X amount of points to scratch-build your characters custom tech-rig. Sam/Conqs get some differences (E.G. Conqs can get one-handed melee and ranged weapons while Sams use two-handed, meaning Conqs can use one of each and be better prepared to react but it'll be weaker), but the baseline tech will be similar.

    COMBAT PROCEDURE

Combat begins (only happens at the beginning of the fight)
    - Roll combat order. If one side actively initiated the combat, they go first, but the roll is still made to determine who acts within their group. This is determined by rolling Reaction, and ordering people from highest to lowest. If there is a tie, the character with the higher reaction goes first. If their reaction is the same, the two characters roll off until one goes first.

    During combat
    - Characters go in combat order
    - First make their Movement action (SURPRISE, engage, take cover).
    - Then make their Combat action (Ranged attack, melee attack).
    - Applicable damage worked out and subtracted from resilience.
    - Move to next in combat order.
    - Repeat until combat order finished.

Between Combat Orders (happens when the last character in the combat order is finished, and the first character is waiting to take their turn again)
    - Does any character wish to attempt to flee?
    - If so Roll Mobility for every character. If a character has rolled a higher mobility than ALL opponents in the combat, they may attempt to flee.

Combat ends once one side has lost all characters from the fight by either fleeing, or running out of resilience.

    >>16078020
Ok, now I just need to come up with an investigative procedure and some stats to include that, work out the tech-creation system for characters and make a list of Unique Strengths, and it's done.

Actually, I'll add a fourth stage to character creation. "Social Strengths". By seperating out combat and investigative/social strengths, hopefully there isn't a situation where characters are just Combat-Monkeys or useless in combat.

    >> Anonymous 08/26/11(Fri)23:26 No.16078182
    >>16078044
Ok, theory behind the Unique Strengths that will define how they can be made:

    1. They will never give a flat bonus to an action (such as ranged attack, escaping combat, whatever).
    2. If they do give a flat number bonus, it will be context sensitive (e.g. A bonus to melee combat when your move action was 'Take Cover')
    3. The preferred bonus will be a context sensitive Die Reroll
    4. While some Unique Strengths will build on each other (Unique strength 1 requiring Unique strength 2 before it can be picked up, and complimenting the benefit), there will be no more than 2 tiers of this.
    5. Some unusual Unique Strengths will exist that provide substantial benefits, but they will need to have a penalty to compensate. These will always be context sensitive and easy to avoid the benefit/penalty if desired.
    6. Unique Strengths that can either only be taken by Conqs or Sams are encouraged.

    Sample Unique Strengths:

Swashbuckler: (Conquistador only). When equipped with a one handed ranged weapon and a one handed melee weapon, if they are successful with either a ranged or melee attack they may declare a second attack of the opposite type (E.G. A successful ranged attack can only be followed by a successful melee attack) at a -3 penalty. Remember a melee attack requires you to be Engaged with the enemy.

Banzai!: (Samurai only) When declaring an Engage move action, the character may use a Die reroll on any subsequent melee attack that turn.

Draw and Strike: (Samurai only) When declaring a SURPRISE move action, the Samurai may receive a die reroll that may be used on the mobility check for SURPRISE, or any subsequent melee combat action that follows.

Insulting cut: A cutting remark follows a cutting blow. If a character is damaged by the owner of this US in melee, they suffer a -1 penalty to all melee skill rolls until the owner of this US's next turn, including defending from melee attacks.

Those are examples of Unique Strengths.

An example of tech as I'm currently picturing it, is as follows:

You have 10 points with which to purchase tech, which comes in four flavours.
    1. Offensive Range - Single or two-handed weapons that allow for ranged attacks and give a bonus to ranged damage. Possess augment slots based on one-two handed.
    2. Offensive Melee - Single or two-handed weapons that give a bonus to melee damage. Possess augment slots based on one-two handed.
    3. Defensive - Provide a flat damage resistance, lowering the amount of damage you take from successful melee or ranged attacks. Possess Augment slots based on base resistance.
    4. Augmentative - Provide a bonus to armour/weapons.
    5. Utility - Provide an investigative benefit.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Hands are a limited resource. While a character is allowed to design themselves with more equipment than their hands can carry

    Examples of each.

Plasma Katana - 2handed Melee (Samurai only): A curved metal conductor that arcs plasma energy along the 'blade'. 2 Augment slots. +4 damage.

Spark-rapier - 1handed melee (conquistador only): Upon being thrust into flesh, the user flicks a tiny button that causes an explosive in the tip of the blade to go off. It requires a moment to reload auotmatically. 1 Augment slot. +2 damage.

Plasma Bow - Ranged 2 handed (Samurai only): Designed to look like an old fashioned bow, it fills the specially designed 'arrows' with an explosive plasma charge as it is drawn back. 2 Augment slots. +4 damage

Flintlaserock - Ranged one handed (Conquistador only): Looks like a flintlocke. Fires like a Star Wars blaster. One Augment slot. +2 damage.

Sparkmusket - Ranged one handed (Conquistador only): Fires a shaped explosive charge that digs into the flesh before detonating. Two augment slots. +4 damage.

(Since I have not tested any of this and am making it up as I go, I've not included costs. I imagine a basic one-handed weapon would be 2 points, 3 points for a two-hander)

Body Armour - Defensive: Mundane protection. +2 resistance. Cannot be worn with other defensive tech. 1 Augment slot.

Power suit - Defensive: Awesome protection. +4 resistance. Cannot be worn with other defensive tech. 2 Augment slots.

Energy Buckler - Defensive (one handed): +2 resistance. Does not count as defensive tech when determining if other tech can be worn at the same time, but does take one hand to use. 1 augment slot.

Plasma Burn - Augment (ranged or melee): Adds an additional +1 to all damage the victim suffers until the users next turn. Requires plasma based weapon.

Laser Bayonet - Augment (ranged) (Conquistador only): Adds an energy blade to the end of the weapon. If used in melee, half the weapon's normal ranged damage bonus may be applied to melee damage in addition to any bonus already in place.

Hyperservos - Augment (Defensive): Grants a +2 to melee damage bonus.

Deflector shield - Augment (Defensive): Grants a +2 resistance bonus to ranged attacks.

Alright, that's me done for now. I still need to come up with stats for the Werewolves and their human servants/Wageslaves (they'll do ANYTHING for that promotion!) But generally it's pretty much ready for testing. Not bad for two hours work while playing an MMO at the same time.

It's been 24 hours? No. I only saw the last thread at like 10 this morning. I was at school all day so I could only give it some passing thoughts here and there.

Anyway, I got the lava/military/internet thing, and scrapped it entirely because it's dumb. Then I checked the thread from this morning and found the phrase "Elite Tactical Strike Rappers" which fucking owns and I wanted to do anyway (My friend said the phrase "Hip Hop Campaign" today and we just ran with it). How that guy came up with "Elite Tactical Strike Rappers" and didn't immediately jizz his panties is beyond me, though.

The actual story/setting is still beyond me because I'm an unimaginitve twat. However, I figure I'm just gonna use a nice simple system. SPECIAL, all stats out of 10, checks out of 100. Roll a D10, multiply by relevant SPECIAL stat, compare against check. Sounds good, right? Nice and simple. Don't even need leveling or anything. Tell me if I'm wrong, please. I need to know.

I'd also like to have traits/perks, if only so they can be based on History's Greatest Rappers, or rap culture in general. Like having one where a character can't function unless they're high, but are better at everything if they are. Or that Shit like that. Also, being Elite Tactical Strike Rappers, no weapons. Just sick nasty rhymes and big phat beats, evoked through spell-like abilities selected during character creation. Though there ought to be at least some items. Gold chains, shutter shades, weed, alcohol, etc.

The only thing I'm really clinging to is HIP HOP CAMPAIGN. I figure the main idea should be that your rap label is going on a zany quest to prove just how gangsta you are, or is otherwise on some kind of adventure where the only fucks you give are about GETTIN DAT PAPER AND SEEIN DEM HATERS B HATIN ON ALL DIS THUGNIFICIENCE. Like 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand or something. Except set in Chernobyl.

Not much, I'm not musical enough to get the system working. Originally I had thought about RAP BATTLES involving TALKING SHIT and TALKING TOUGH SHIT that use advanced broadcasting technology IN SPACE. The premise was that, since intergalactic travel takes waaaay too long, disputes and the like would have to be resolved in verbal competitions in three levels, HAIKAI, REP BATTLES and IAMBIC TETRAMETERS. Couldn't get the cadenza going. Sorry.

The Space... the gaping abyss, cold and brutal. The oppressive expanse, filled with naught but debris and our hypersonic communication waves. You go into one of these overpriced deathtraps, flung over at the barbarous speed of 300000 kilometers per minute and you say; ´Gee, that´s fast!´ Sure it is, so they though those pencil-pushers and pussies at Washington, at Moscow, at France, at Songjhan. "become a hero" they said, "the finest of Earth, to set their mark upon our time" they claimed. "Gaea`s firstborns, to perpetuate our species" they yammered, yammer like all those fancy-ass bigwigs always do. "Meet wonderful locales, see the universe!" Bullshit, all of it. Because, when they send you away from your family, away from your friends and pets, away from your job- fuck it, from your WORLD encased in 5 feet Astrolite slab, packaged like some fucking sardines in a techy can and spit far, far way like some leftover bit you know something is VERY wrong.

Aida, Bertha, Helena... I never got to say goodbye to them. They are most likely dead, just as my parents, as Rufus, as the kids, as my mates. How long has it been? How long have i been gone? 100, maybe 200 years? if Pegasus IV is 3 million years away from the shithole, and a Pacemaker ship can travel 1 light-second in a minute, then one Light-minute in an hour... then sixty... twenty-four...three days! Three fucking days for an hour! twenty-four hours equals seventy-two days, almost a quarter of a year for a single Lightday. Shit. Five lights days per year, and Pegasus being... 3 ...million years away. Oh God.

Storm Chasers, Alternate Universes, and ...tits...

I guess it would be like a mixture of Discovery channel's "Storm Chasers" mixed with Sliders.

In the near future something goes horribly wrong at the LHC. At first it seems to have not affected the world outside the compound. Months go by of mysterious dissapearances of people and objects that get caught in some of the worst storms to date, which have been increasing steadily since the "Incident".

Soon after footage of a wildlife camera is recovered from debris showing what could not possibly be from this world. First Drones, then scientific teams, then adventure seekers start entering chasing these new breed of extra-violent storms hoping to make it to the "Eye" and back out into the unkown. No one has ever returned, but these "Chasers" have taken to wearable recording devices and scatter their various logs throughout the multiple worlds they travel.

In this new world the most prized possesions are logs recovered detailing strange new worlds. Some are remarkably similar. Other are not.

It is not long before the Adult Entertainment Industry sends it's best into the "Eyes". This new breed of "Chaser" bravely fucks where and what no man or woman has fucked before.

Since I've been working all day, have a late contender:

At some, hazily-defined point in the future, a radical South American Aztecaboo scientist and engineer sends a mad AI back in time to pre-Colombian Meso-America. There, it has been commanded to establish itself as a God, then lead its servants to victory against the disgusting European invaders. Fortunately, it was not sent back in time far enough to establish its empire.

Unfortunately for the Conquistadors who've blundered to this fabled city of gold, it did manage to establish itself in a vast underground complex beneath a golden temple. Within, it plots destruction, slowly upgrading the local inhabitants, both human, animal and plant to suit its purpose.

These explorers who have come seeking gold and riches will find only death and madness in the temple of el Dios de la Máquina!

It's a bit 3:16 - Carnage Amongst the Stars, a bit Cold City, and a bit shit.

Have a read though, you might just like it.

Finished. Nice work there! I liked the GM playing a more adversarial role than usual. I actually used an identical roll-under-stat-with-d10 system for my game Brewmasters of Io. Great minds and all that, I guess.

As an addendum, it would be interesting if blood spilled was a resource- the more of it, the more powerful the foes the computer can send after the explorers. Sort of a pacing/balance/resource management metagame sort of thing.

Thanks muchly. I fucking loved Brewmasters of Io, really reminded me of Paranoia or something along those lines.

That's a pretty good idea actually. Maybe make it so each point of "physical" damage, i.e. damage to Skill and Brawn, adds to the Blood Pool the GM can use. When it reaches certain levels, new abilities and threats are unlocked.

As for the GM being more adversarial, that was definitely intentional. If I ever get round to redrafting it, I'd go out of my way to say that while the GM should be aiming to kill the player characters, he should aim to do it in a fun, interesting and/or horrifying way. Just throwing invisible, flying Golden Men at them at the start of the game isn't fun for anyone.

Also, I think I'd add circumstance bonuses, just to make it a little more survivable if the players go out of their way to come up with a clever plan or a cool description.

    okay I got it.

A post apocalyptic world where most living things have been either killed or transformed by the zombie virus. Fascinatingly, the virus is unable to survive at deep sea levels and apart from very, very rare stocks of unaffected sheep/cows/pigs etc, deep sea crustaceans are the only real meat left in this world.

I'm finally finished with Brewmasters of Io v2. Added stuff:
    -Description of setting and station
-Clearer and more fleshed-out station generation rules
    -Character and GM record sheets!
-Nice-ish formatting, lots of clarifications and re-writes
-Rules for getting drunk and weapons (including a chair covered in glued-on razorblades and a firehose full of acid)
    -Rules summary
    -GM advice
    -More shit I probably forgot

    >> Anonymous 08/28/11(Sun)18:33 No.16098520
Well, I've been playing with the idea to run a game off the 30 minute movie, Kakurenbo. But instead of children playing hide and seek in a mystical robot-demon filled, deadly part of the city, I'm going to have the players play themselves trying to find something while racing against an equal number of NPC's. It's going to be an immersion game, so like the movie, they'll each get a mask. I'm also making my players bring backpacks with the supplies they intend to take, substituting weapons with flash cards. If they want food or water, they'll need to bring it, or steal it from an NPC. I'll also give them a variety of animal masks (the movie requires they all wear fox masks to be recognized as players), but each with a positive and negative attribute. What they don't pick, the NPC's will get. I hope they appreciate it.

Thanks. It's nowhere near finished, and I haven't even finished the mask idea. I want this game to be scary, where the character's play themselves, and can die. By wearing masks they won't be able to see each others faces, alienating them from each other.
