The black ravine's purple miasma creeped out from the edges of the sunlit cliff from above. In the only two times that it rained in Kolstec, the Helena river flooded, mixing with the ibonyte deposits in the well, which caused the ravine to cut deeper due to the deposits bonding, flooding, and refining the Ibonyte even further and deeper until the ravine was just a purple shadow.

Behind Kolstec, a river. And beyond that was the wasteland that led to Voss.

In the second time that rained, the miners had retreated into leaky homes. Others retreated into dwellings and caves as they watched outside and saw people trying to find an excuse not to remain outside.

Those who remained stood still , alone in an ethereal world of mist and water. The rumblings of the sky overhead hid their screaming silence.
Before them stood rows of empty graves.

Only their weapons remained as headstones.

And their commander did not move from her spot.
    >> [Hm1]Pvt. Isane !!VMJuvVuY6J8 08/27/11(Sat)20:15 No.16087225
Isane rises to her feet, dusting off the bits of dirt covering the knees of her uniform. She wasn't sure exactly how Hodr manages to start a garden in every location they occupy between missions, but she was thankful that it gave her somewhere to grow a few flowers. With all the loses from the Second Battle of Five-Finger Valley, she's going to need quite a few of them. The small vial of ibonyte dust that she uses to accelerate the plant's growth slips back into one of her pockets, and she gathers up the colorful assortment of flowers, most of them Poppies, Lilies, or Irisies. For Winter and Summer, she made sure to have some in blue and red, the colors they had painted onto their vehicles.

Not long after, she stands among the others in attendance at the funeral, the rain soaking her uniform. Her boots sink slightly into the rapidly forming mud as she steps forward, laying flowers in front of each of the markers.

" A few hours ago, we saw the sun rise through the valley walls. A man says goodbye to his wife, she gets bread for her children, and even now, in this rain.

    Children are playing.

A few hours ago. This was not even possible. We would not be here, and this rain would have been awash with blood.

But the sun rose, Kolstec remained, and today we still exist. And why ?

Because the enemy is in shambles because their ranks have been scorched ?

Because their organization has been decapitated by the head ?

Because we have the weapons that the Voss begrudgingly placed in our hands ?

Or is it perhaps that when the call came, when that shining glimmer of a miracle was all but swallowed in the darkest night, we , powerless and small as we are forced that miracle to come true with all our fears , uncertainty, and doubt.

    And yet we walk.

We stand here, the light of tomorrow on us again.

    And why ? "

She turns and faces the markers, rows of rifles, swords, trinkets, and weapons staked on the ground the rain gripping and washing the blood that stained them.

    " They know why. "
    " They understood why."

She kneels before a grave. A helmet dangled on a protruding knife.

    " Thank you, everyone "

The fields swayed with reds greens, whites and blues as flowers began to bloom all around the graves.

    The sky rumbled.

    clouds parted.

And beyond the valley was the distant glimmer of the enemy's ranks.

The big fight was yet to come

".....I'm sorr-- DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN DA-"

    "Sir..."

Altea was young, too young. She and Dalian had both chosen to stray off the path of their missionary duties the day they saw Hodr fighting off the lupine beasts in Wassau, the day they witnessed the true horrors of the world.

Ever vibrant. She was a kind soul, more joyful than anyone in the battalion. Although many would have claimed to never have met her, they would inexplicably be mistaken. Altea would work almost like some little, spunky, but loving juggernaut, helping those around her. She would always bring towels to troopers in training, she would bring provisions and much needed water to the near fanatical mechanics and pilots who'd work nonstop on their machines. And even in the midst of night, she could be found within the armory tent, polishing the team's armor plates, just hoping that the most miniscule amount of work would provide just a fraction of a chance that everyone would return home safely.

Altea loved everyone, because before she came to follow Father Zwei, she had been an orphan on the lam in Aeon's countryside. To her, Father Zwei, her sisters, and now the Hellghast, they were her only family. Her only friends.

Mana was sitting in Kolstec HQ, they had lost almost everything. Rip was dead and Vipera was MIA, they had lost their caster force and their spec op division in one night. Every armor that was used in the battle had been destroyed. She had just finished sending a priority message to send more men and material to Kolstec or else they’d fall. While on the other hand she took care of writing mail to the family of the dead, but those would have to wait after they held the city to be sent.

Something went wrong, during the defense of 5 fingers. It was probably no one’s fault but she still worried about it when in private, it would be a bow to the already low morale of the troops. She had to find replacement for a dead officer, muster the defense of the city, assign affectation of new recruits and another thousand and one small things. Mourning the dead would have to wait, war didn’t wait after all.

Vahn and his squadmate sat atop a ridge overlooking the path of the Voss advance, the young private observing the enemy in the distance through his rifle's scope while the other man worked the radio.

He had missed the funeral, such as it was, for those cut down during the battle...No...more like slaughter at Five Finger Valley. He had the urge to light a candle for the fallen, but had to resist, because doing so would likely give away his position. The dead have an eternity to wait anyway, they won't mind being mourned later, rather than sooner.

"Quint...any luck on the radio yet?"
    "No sir. Sorry sir."
    "Keep trying."

That was all there was to do. Try, and keep trying until the Voss paid in full for what they had done.

While the rest of the Hellghast were busy either mourning lost comrades or hastily erecting defenses, Gunther found solace in trying to rebuild Isara. The previous battle had essentially wiped out their entire armor complement, and he was busy scrounging parts from anything he could find.

The rest of his crew weren't present, as they had all taken rather serious injuries. Paskal had burns across her right arm and part of her face, Richards took a hit in the shoulder from a bullet round, and Bethany took shrapnel in the back and nearly bled out. Biggs was killed instantly when his Bitank was hit and Wedge was in a coma, with medics unsure of whether he would live through the night.

Scowling, Gunther redoubled his efforts. The Hellghast would always need a girl like Iasara to look out for them. He would finish mk5 no matter what.

Winters turns his dog tags over in his hands, his jacket open as he relaxes a bit under the shade of the wing of his ducky. The other two are also there, a bit weary from a long day of maintenance and flight drills. "Ever wonder why they give us so many of these?"
Summers thanks Altea for the water he's given, before looking up at Winters with the same nonchalant, if somewhat annoyed expression on his face that he's always wearing. "One's for the medical team when they try to patch you up. The other's for your body bag."
Winters looks at Summers with a sidewards glance. "I mean, why do they give us two sets of dogtags? We've each got a spare set. It doesn't seem like it'd make a whole lot of sense, since you'll only really need one."
Springer doesn't look up from her drink, swishing it around in the canteen slowly. "Maybe in case you lose one? I don't know, there's got to be a reason. They don't seem to really care, though..."
Winters' eyes light up in that characteristically childish way, the same look he gets when he has any sort of "bright" idea. "Well then, let's exchange ours!"
Summers sips his tea before answering. "What, mementos in case we get waxed? I don't plan on dying, and if YOU die, I don't actually want anything to remember you by."
Winters puts on a genuinely hurt expression. "Aww, I haven't let you guys down yet, have I? Besides, I'm an Ace Pilot! Heck, we're ALL Ace Pilots! We got the skills and the training to pull through anything. I just thought it'd be cool to... kinda have a part of each other with us, I guess."
Summers shrugs. "If it'll make you feel better. You really are just a kid..."
    >> Pvt. Springer !u/EYfo0o8s 08/27/11(Sat)21:36 No.16087951

    Summers

    O neg.

She slowly steps up to Winters' and Summers' grave markers. Everyone else had rifles, swords, other weapons staked in their bodiless graves. Here, Springer had taken it on herself to fasion markers. There had been nothing to salvage from the wrecks of the duckies, no time to find any trinkets. So she found some spare vehicle parts and rigged them into crosses. They look surprisingly pristine, for monuments made essentially from junk.
"Winters... You really were just a kid. They say the brave die young. You were just too brave for this world, so the Valknyr took you from us. But at least you left something behind."
She places Winters' dogtags over his cross, laying it across the shoulders. "Your courage."
She turns to Summers' cross, turning his dog tags over in her hands.
"Summers... You always talked about how you hated this whole situation, fighting in this war. But you stuck with us. No matter what we went through, you were there, keeping us in line. You left something behind as well."
She hangs the dog tags across Summers' cross. "Your dedication."
"Both of you... Thanks for everything. I'll use that, and keep fighting. I'll keep carrying that torch you left behind, and some day this war will be over. We'll see a peaceful Ragnyll again."
She lays her hands on the crosses, gripping them tightly. "Winters... Summers... I'll see both of you on the other side."

Armitage sits amongst the munitions crates, looking out at the rain, halfheartedly carving at a piece of wood. She feels empty, and confused. She had followed the Hellghast for three missions now, following people she thought were heroes, righteous and unstoppable. Now they were dead. Ungracefully dead. Blown up, torn apart, scattered across the wasteland, ghoulified dead. It just doesn't seem real. They were here not even a day ago. They were drinking and making stupid wagers and talking about food only a few nights before. Now they're just gone. Like the heroes departing before the story is over. It leaves her empty and confused for the future. Even worse, it now means as a survivor, she'll be one of the experienced ones to all the new recruits. She doesn't feel experienced. She feels like a silly girl who just happened to always be an inch away from the chopping block when the blade fell.

"Well," she says to the rain "I guess it can't be helped. I joined up to get direction in my life, and here I've got it. Can't run off now, just 'cause I don't like which direction that is." Heart pounding, she stands. No more fear. No more doubt. She survived, it would be a disgrace to her fallen comrades to sulk like this. It's time to be strong, to be an example, to become the hero she saw in everyone else.

She looks across the street, and sees at the makeshift medical center a new corpse being covered in a fresh sheet by a haggard medic, and sits back down.

"Okay, maybe a little fear and doubt. I'm still human, after all..."

It was still raining when he arrived at the base, the steady plink-plink-plink rattling off his helmet as soon as he stepped out the door of the truck. Paisley waved off the driver before staring toward the depressing, gray buildings that littered the base.

He had heard about what happened at Five Finger Valley from the Voss radio propaganda. It came in constantly to the towns that edged ever so precariously to the battle lines. "Vosskon Blossom" was the name some of the people had given to the mysterious voice, that spouted out about the glory of Voss and the folly of Ragnyll. Her most recent "report" came the night after the battle, describing in excruciating detail as the Ragnyll defenders screamed, ran, and were struck down by the endless march of glorious Vosskon soldiers, crushed under the treads of mighty Vosskon tanks.

He didn't see how many people left the bar that night with him, but all he knew was that he was where he needed to be--on the front, serving his country, beating back a threat too massive to comprehend. "Every little bit counts," he whispers to himself, taking a puff on the cigarette between his lips before shouldering his bag and making for the barracks, boots sloshing through the mud.

The base was quiet as Paisley trudged along, save for the occasional sight of a Ragnyll soldier, head bundled and enshrouded, hastily running through the mud. He idly wondered where everyone was as he passed by the munitions building, coming to the door of the barracks. After dropping the cigarette into a small metal tin in his pocket and making sure to try wiping as much mud off his boots as he could, he opened the door to the sagging building and stepped inside.

The door creaked as it swung shut behind him. Lightning flashed through the screen-covered glass window, followed soon by a booming thunderclap. Paisley took one of the available beds, threw his bag across the bed and sat over the edge. He looked right, to the locker placed at the head and to the left of each bed. It was dirty, a faded dark blue that was peeling in places, exposing the rust underneath. There was a nameplate at the top that had been written over and scratched out multiple times. Curious, Paisley decided to look around the barracks lockers, inspecting the nameplates.

There were more scratched out names than written over ones.

Jathan stood in front of Lankest's grave marker, a kit planted in the ground. He'd served under the man since their first deployment. Watched him cackle with glee as enemies feel to their turrets, rage as men and women who's names he'd never admit to knowing died, and above all stand firm in the face of anything the Voss threw at them. Jathan would have never believed he'd out live the man. In truth he wouldn't have, if Lankest hadn't ordered him to take command of one of his platooned squads during the battle. If not for that, he'd have died with Lankest when the artillery shell hit.

“I know what was wrong with the barricades, sir,” Jathan spoke to the kit, “There wasn't anything wrong with them. They could have taken a bitank round and anyone on the other side would have been perfectly fine. You just wanted to hear us say it, for us to have confidence in our own work. That was why you always yelled at us, at me. You wanted me to yell back, to tell you you were full of shit and that I knew what I was doing....I-I don't know if I can do that yet, sir, but I will. One day. I swear it.”

Jathan knelt for a moment in front of the kit and when he got up and left the name Lankest had been etched into it's surface.

“I hope this stops soon,” he murmured to himself as he wiped the rain from his eyes.

    Some quick questions about Cfs

Do fusion guns suffer from spell back lash?
Fusion guns are able to fire any element regardless of tapped arrays correct?
Can the fusion gun be fired past it's range?
    Do rays ignore range restrictions?
    Can it fire ice shards?
Can it fire ice shards in such a manner that it creates a wall until the ice melts?
Can I get a second fusion gun as an upgrade?
Spell proficiencies basically means you have an array of a given type on hand at all times correct?

Do fusion guns suffer from spell back lash?

    >Can the fusion gun be fired past it's range?
They should not, that was the use for it.
    Do rays ignore range restrictions?
I don't think they do or if they do they will get less accuracy as per normal rule.
    Can it fire ice shards?
    It should.
Can it fire ice shards in such a manner that it creates a wall until the ice melts?
I'm not sure about that, you have less options when using the gun
Can I get a second fusion gun as an upgrade?
You can get more ammo... I don't thing you can get a second gun (unless you fluff your upgrades as such)
Spell proficiencies basically means you have an array of a given type on hand at all times correct?
No, it mean you can cast without an array and ibonyte if there's enough of the element present on the field.
So wouldn't that mean a Wyrm has two arrays since they are a fire array and have fire proficiency?
No it only mean you don't need the array to cast it.
Would fusion gun explode when combined with the scarab aspect?
It shouldn't, even though the scarab ability may not apply to the spell cast.

All of those are from (my rather limited) knowledge of the rules and what IC say is applied at the end.

I realize that your standad isha machine pistols are
of a relatively thrown back design, with uses that no doubt serve its purposes along with your standard issued rifle as a defense and opportunity weapon.

I will however suggest if there exists a more streamlined veresion of automatic that doesnt require running into enemy fire head on. And because we are facing an enemy with extraordinary numbers, a gun that works in hard numbers would be plenty useful.

This wont compromise its cost of materials either because it uses all the same parts present in both the rifle and its companion. Please give it a look as I will stake my life on the line with whatever you have to offer.

We are backed into a proverbial wall with what was left of Kolstec's defenses when the Voss has used it.
They will no doubt send twice the numbers they need to take it over. And may have left a countermeasure to take it back in case it fell to our hands.

But on defenses we are situated on a tiered multilevelled wall with only a single path to the top. Through.

The enemy approaches from the wrist, which crosses the ravine before it reaches the wall.

Enemy composition will no doubt rely on airpower and range to back up ground forces.

A terraced defense with a single way in? Looks like uzilizing that chokepoint to its fullest will win us the day. AAA guns wouldn't hurt, either--flak cannons would be good, turn that airspace into a good right mess of shrapnel.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. How big is the chokepoint? If it's narrow enough to the point where they could only get one of those super-heavy tanks that were seen at Five Fingers through at a time, we could effectively block the entrance to all incoming ground forces, and could shift our major firepower toward clearing the skies.

If there is only one path, then having an [M] plant bombs on it will help, mines or controlled bombs both will work well.

    Alright. Here's my plan then:

Phase 1: Soapworth finds any traps they've left. Buried soldiers, explosives, whatever they've got, it needs to be found. The rest of us will begin to prepare defenses, and somehow contact Vipera.

Phase 2: Create the arenas. In order to win this fight, we will need to ensure that out troops survive longer than in the valley. Casters are to create tunnels for fall back and then Mobile Artillery is to set bombs to collapse them once they've been used. The further they get, the stronger our defenses get. Engineers should set up turrets in hidden locations - in alleys, between buildings, in buildings but pointed out windows, ect.

Phase 3: Bring the rain. Ride the Valkyries - Storks and Duckies - into combat from behind the forces and flank them and from there, we end them where we can control the battle. From there, we should succeed.

From what we've seen, the Voss do not employ paratroopers or bombers.

Instead, based on what we've encountered thus far, you can probably count on Voss gunships, along with a high possibility of gargoyles and more of those blimps filled with ghoul dust.

To prevent a similar fiasco that occurred in the previous battle, I suggest unit to focus their fire on those blimps, or to create a dedicated AA force.

"Soapworth, I can give you one better. I can give you a localized hurricane." Cecilia is smiling broadly as she approaches the War room, Willhelm's notes now fixed in her spellbook. "With enough arrays I can do most anything at this point. We will see how well they fly when they've got a storm wrecking their aerial assaults. I'll need people to help set up the arrays before they get here though - I'm going to learn from my predecessor's mistakes, and not overspend myself."
    >> [TA] Knightly !IMYfe1j54Y 08/29/11(Mon)01:33 No.16102926
So people, here's my recommendation for the bare minimum of what will be required to mount a successful defense:

Earthworks. Fox holes, trenches, building-tall mounds of dirt, pits filled with sharpened logs, anything that will slow down the Voss advance and eat up their manpower will be good. Additionally, dragon's teeth would be effective in hampering the ability of the Voss in fielding their tanks properly.

Indirect attackers: mortar teams, artillery, octopeds to keep the approach covered with webbing, not only do we need to keep the ground elements slowed down, but we need our barrage timed in such a way that every phase, including theirs, a bomb is going off and their people are being vaporized.

Air cover. As mentioned by Iron Command, the Voss are likely to mount an aerial assault. We will need either duckies or ground-based AA to fill the sky with flak. Caster air cover will also be good.

Traps. Rock falls, rolling burning logs, minefields, pits filled with holy water to destroy ghouls, any kind of trap that you can think of will be good.

Do we know exactly what is keeping those blimps up? Perhaps a few lucky hits with fire will knock them down.
Also, we should give serious consideration to making all sorts of traps on the pathway up the wall. Roll some burning logs down, pitfalls, tank traps, dragons teeth, and the like. Heck, with all the rain we've had, perhaps a caster can send a torrent of water and wipe off some enemy infantry.

Cecilia, I was thinking that maybe a localized snowstorm or blizzard could be effective. Snow and ice would hamper their movement, and it has the possibility of outright freezing their tanks and icing their air power. O'course, that snow could also hamper our movement as well. We could probably minimize the movement penalty by digging trenches all through the terraces, but I'm not sure how we could protect our own armor and air units from the cold.

Concerning our own troop disposition, I suggest anything that can output a massive amount of damage while being able to sustain damage. Seeing as this is a defense, a high mobility will unlikely be necessary.

Simply put, heavy tanks would be ideal. Any and all infantry will have their place on this battlefield.

However, simply destroying the Voss soldiers will not be enough. As you are no doubt aware, the Voss have the ability to revive their own troops in a rather macabre fashion. As such, you can expect this mission to be one against the clock; it will most likely come down to a sniper or a similar specialized unit eliminating Voss command units while the rest of you hold off the Voss assault.

That being said, Agent Vipera is likely to be invaluable if she is able to covertly eliminate high profile Voss units from behind enemy lines.

It's a shame that we lost most of our Special Ops division...

Good to see lots of new folk and new input.

    Ok, what we know:
    >Voss now have the Heavy Armor advantage with Mono's.
    >Voss have MEAN airpower.
    >Voss are countering our hotdogging with en masse assault.

If you can shoot at an air unit, do it, don't wait, don't give it a chance to lay waste on ANYONE. If it's 1-2 hexes out and someone else is hitting it, just extended range attack it if you have to.

If you can take out a tank without fully exposing yourself, do it. Called-shot it's tracks, snipe it's crew, hijack it.
[on a related note, will Heavy Conc damage vehicle armor, IC? Or is it just Heavy Infantry/Air/light Armor?]

If you can support your team members, do so, coordinate, don't try to play hero, don't play point farmer. Cover retreats, collect/assist the wounded, help repair armor, etc.
Going 1-man per lane format was very silly, we spread ourselves WAY too thin last mission.
    >Friends don't let friends get overrun.
Also, think outside the box, remember, if you overwatch (BE VERY SPECIFIC AND CLEAR when using this order, state your priorities, point at the right directions, and state if you'll shoot outside your normal range) , you can prone/stealth (Ambushes are fucking wonderful), you can snap shoot on the go (move, shoot, move), you can accomplish a lot.

I suggest we compile the pre-battle roster and see what kind of class spread we're looking at. Because one of the main issues at 5-Finger this time around was the complete breakdown of our forces.
    >at one point, 50% of the team was being botted, and classes were getting bogged down, players couldn't keep up.

Lotsa blasting and traps, eh? Sounds good. Dragon's teeth are a wonderful idea--we could set them up in rows along the road. Intersperse that with hedgehogs, antipersonnel, and antitank mines, and that'll be a mean road to cross. Pitfalls might be useful as they're coming in, too--put some spikes at the bottom, and we could immobilize infantry; make 'em deep enough and we can take tanks out of commission.

Might be a good idea too for some people on the edge of the wall looking down to the road to have something to drop on 'em as they come through--boiling oil and napalm come to mind.

What we wanna do this mission, I think, is slow 'em down, pack 'em together, then blow 'em up.

As we are on an ibonyte mine; setting up a flag near a mine will allow one to locally replenish ibonyte crystal supplies.

Taking over iron foundries will allow one to armor up, and flagging local habitations like bars and churches, homes, and field hospitals allow for personnel resources instantly. As well as recovery aides.

Precisely, Private Paisley. Keep in mind, the Voss aren't going to want to sit still while all of this happens, thus it will be necessary to keep them relatively still and busy. Thus, we're going to need some kind of defensive line - likely to consist of vanguards and assault troopers backed by a wall of turrets.

And of course, killing high profile Voss personnel will be highly advantageous to us.

Private Hawley brushed away the last few metal shavings with his hand, the padded leather of his gloves scraping against the weapon's ragged surface. Placing the awl on the bench next to the firearm itself, Hawley swept the sweat off of his forehead, taking a moment to curse the stuffy air inside the tent before he rose from the makeshift workshop to place the heavy gun in his footlocker. He’d been a late arrival to the Heavy Weapons squad, having been severely delayed due to heavy Voss activity in the surrounding areas. He had apparently just missed a devastating engagement which had depleted the militia, which meant he was needed now more than ever. As he rose from the locker, the dogtags around his neck jingled and clinked against each other. Pausing for a second, Hawley grasped one of the small metal plates with one hand, staring down at the newly pressed identification tag. He’d just received it earlier that morning, and already he had defaced it, just like his gun. The name “Hawley” had been scratched out, and in its place the name “Skurge” had been etched by his own hand. Letting the tags drop back down to his chest, the Private began to move for the tent’s exit, swearing to get some rubber silencers for them after the mission briefing.

    Finally;
Due to popular demand [and various economical pressures] The Battle Standard cuts down on the weight of the standard assault loadout and allows for a more robust automatic that favors mobile combat. Additionally the freed up weight allows one to carry more equipment on the field, and last longer in sustained firefights using spare rates of fire and allows one to 'check' more attackers with less.

Ah , the Ragnyllians are an economic sort of people, placing mobility and time on top of all things. With a 2 person heavy weapons team, one man can set up while the other fires in almost the same breath. And in a normal turn 2 can work efficiently together to make the gun fire twice in one turn.

Consequently, if one's partner was taken down the power of the team is halved and moving around will prove far more difficult.

As Gunther neared completion on Isara Mk5, he noted many of the lessons he learned with Mk4. First, Gryphons tended to attract a substantial amount of fire from Voss heavy weaponry, so he decided to modify Isara to accommodate sloped armor, which would reduce the damage she would take from incoming shells by causing them to deflect off the armor rather than strike it head on.

The second issue was that even with both Odin cannons firing at once, the massive firepower Isara could put out sometimes wasn't enough, especially with the Voss throwing out heavier and heavier tanks. Swapping out the old explosive mix with a newer mix spruced up with some modified Voss rocket propellant meant his shells could now pack more explosive punch than before, even if was slightly more unstable.

May I also suggest fielding the captured Voss fire tank and airship in this fight? The airship can be used to deploy a massive smokescreen over our troops to conceal them, while the Voss fire tank can be deployed to ambush anyone moving up the road with a wall of fire.

"I'm no Combat Engineer, but I thought I heard you say 'collapsible tunnel network' in regards to the ravine defense system. Exactly how deep below ground are these tunnels going to be? Because if they're too close to the surface, calling in artillery support may cause premature collapses which could cut off soldiers and leave them trapped in the fortifications."

If we do utilize the fire tank, we should make sure to dig a few firing positions for it as well, deep enough so that it can go hull down so less of it is exposed to enemy attack. If we do so, we'll also have to make sure it can back out easily if needed.

As for the airship, what kinda range do those cannons have? Perhaps we can use it as a gunship and have it out of the way of danger while still providing fire support.

One last thing, and perhaps more importantly, it's fairly obvious they will attack again at night, when they are at their best. I suggest we do what we can to light up the night, using spotlights, torches, bonfires, what-have-you. Perhaps we can even fill up a trench with something flammable and prevent enemy infantry from moving over it.

If we're still throwing out ideas, I think I have one. How viable would it be creating a sort of "moat" of fire around the entrance to the road that goes through the city? Their infantry advance would be halted for at least a few turns, and a fire that large and that bright should give us quite a bit of visibility.

"If I might expound on my fellow soldier's idea, such a moat could definitely be of great use in terms of dealing with advancing armor. Perhaps we could combine the idea of a fire-moat with the classic pit trap? If the Engineers could feasibly design a large enough moat, and an accompanying top-layer that would hold for advancing Infantry but collapse under the weight of a tank, we could feasibly drop an armored unit into a pit of flammable chemicals, which would not only create the desired fire pit, but also remove one of their more powerful units and hinder further armor advances simultaneously." Skurge hastily sketched out a very rough plan for the potential trap on one of the few napkins which had somehow made its way into the room.

First of all, the grave site. Always giving us locations to defend huh.

Here is my proposed Array and Casting map. The flag is needed so that I can continue to get Ibonyte from the mine. I will deploy at the Green Circle, and each Red Circle is an Array that needs to be put down. The three blue circles are going to be primary casting targets, so there will be storm effects on those three areas. Other storm effects will be created on an as-needed basis.

Just did a quick mock-up of the defenses outside the city. The red lines are the proposed fire pit traps. Green will be where most of our infantry will start out, with blue squares being jump-pads that allow for a quick retreat into the city. Grey Xs are tank traps and dragon teeth, mines too I guess, and the dark red line is a barricade, with the light blue circles behind it being sentries or rockets. Right away or during retreat an [M] can place explosives on the bridge and detonate them, cutting off the Voss' primary entrance, though I'm not sure what effect that might have on the vein.
    >> Pvt. Springer !u/EYfo0o8s 08/29/11(Mon)13:51 No.16106763
Springer enters the garage and flips the power switch. Flickering for a moment, the lights reveal the forms of three Striders painted with blue, red, and green stripes. Armored cockpits and modified armor kits made these significantly more durable than the stock striders, modifications Winters had made specifically to... keep them alive.
Springer steps up to the one with the green stripe, opening the hatch and entering. She never had operated the striders in the condition they were in now, with the armored cockpits installed. Winters had made that modification because of what happened to Springer at Wassau. He'd made the armor enhancements because of how many times Summers' strider had been scrapped at the first Battle of Kolstec. Everything Winters had done had been a result of lessons learned in previous engagements, to prevent similar situations from happening again. Winters had taught her a lesson with his death at Five Finger; stick with what you're familiar with. She wouldn't be piloting duckies again any time soon.
She hears foot steps from the entrance, and turns to see two pilots, probably conscripted under the new draft terms judging from how old they are, stepping inside. Both female, fresh out of rushed courses at pilot training, and only just old enough to fight. She stands from the cockpit and drops to the floor as one of them greets her.

"Is this the... uh, the Strider squad? We were told to report here to prepare for the next mission. Uh, ma'am."
Springer steps up to the two. They're probably intimidated by her seniority, even though she's still a private like them. The scars on her face, which she'd gotten in the previous battle and were still partially wrapped in gauze, probably don't help anything either.
"None of the ma'am stuff, I'm a private like you, even if I will be in charge for my experience. What're your names?"
    "I'm Sellers. May Sellers."
    "And I'm April Sanders."
Springer smirks. "Any relation to the Colonel?"
"I wish people would stop making references to a joke I don't get..."

Orange line: 1st defensive line, protected with cover and a minefield (the red rectangle)

Green line: 2nd defensive line, procted with cover and will serve as a bottleneck.

Blue line: 3rd defensive line, protected with cover this will be the fall back position in case the bridge is taken.

Brown line: Second bottleneck, this will be where we'll make our last stand before a full retreat

Extra: Blue tunnels: I'll need volunteer not afraid to die, we'll wait there until the enemy take the bridge and assault their rear.

Purple square: A Tr will wait underground here to extract the survivor of the rear attack.

Major, we could probably put some Dragon's Teeth and hedgehogs right on our side of the ravine--even on the bridge. If the bridge can hold the weight, we should stack up some fortifications there.

I think barbed wire or razor ribbon could be useful here, too. String it up through the Dragon's Teeth and the barbed wire and we'll slow down that advance right quick. Undead won't care that the razor ribbon's sharp; they'll just keep walking into it until they cut themselves apart. Living troops will have their forces hampered by just trying to cut their way through it or crawl under it. Combined with hedgehogs and Dragon's Teeth, save them using a dozer or a super-heavy, their armor won't be able to come through.

Unfortunately, that means we'd have to use up a slot just for a pilot to completely dedicate himself to hiding under the bridge for tanks that may or may not cross, as opposed to actually putting him in a vehicle of his own or taking up a rifle and holding the line. Not to mention that the moment he hijacks a Voss tank, he'll just be smack dab in the sights of the 50+ Voss tanks immediately behind him.

Plus, pilots are not cheap investments. In order to get an effective hijack crew running, you'd need to add several crewmates (remember, pilots start solo) to increase chances of success as well as provided critical extra actions for the vehicle they hijack.

Might I propose that people set up air arrays on the higher elevations to the south? Keeping them tapped, we could have a continuous wind blowing from south to north. This could slow down the blimps, as well as cause and ghoul gas to blow back towards their forces instead of landing on ours.

That is a bad idea. Large continuous effects like that are dangerous to casters. Excellent plan, Major.

But may I suggest a few additions?

Perhaps burying that captured flame tank in the fork in the road will allow us to mount an ambush once the enemy has made their approach to the bridge. Granted, it will be suicidal for whoever decides to pilot it, however...

Additionally, may I suggest radio-controlled explosives further up the two roads leading to the bridge? Ideally, these would be strong enough to destroy, if not at least immobilize, the Voss superheavies.

And lastly, may I suggest we place our artillery on the L9 hill in the back? From there, they should be able to hit just about anything on the battlefield.

Do we have any effective counter-measures to the Voss air force, Major? The only solution that I can think of is a small flight of Duckies/Storks that are to remain behind our lines, ready to intercept any hostile fliers.

Major, I'm curious--do we have a finalized version of the defenses yet? Of course the Major's plans take precedence to mine, and I only had time to draw a rough sketch of defenses past the bridge. It would be preferable if we could combine the plans in a way that works. In addition, we absolutely require light sources of some kind, such as torches, fire pits, spotlights, or whatever. It may not help against ghouls, but at least the fog of war won't have so much effect on us.

Negative. The Sturm requires all of its power to fire armor piercing rounds.

However if you take the str upgrade you can shoulder mount the sturm and fire it while on the move, the resulting effect deals one damage to you.

Spotlights would be good to quickly pinpoint enemy airships trying to loiter over the city, and firepits would be a good idea to both illuminate the area and hopefully drop some soldiers. My main concern is that any light source we *do* put up would become a priority target for the Voss.

Which is why we should have at least a few light sources that don't rely on technology like bulbs. I'm pretty fond of the fire pit ideas still, as they're viable light sources and can help deny the enemy advance for longer. The more time the Voss spend trying to reach the bridge, the more time we have to whittle down their Vanguard.

Even still, firepits have their drawbacks--either the fuel with run out, or the pile of bodies eventually snuffs out the flame. Torches come to mind, but like I said--Voss might prioritize those.

"Whoa, watch what you are shooting at! What if you hit someone behind that radio? Those bullets aren't exactly easy to stop."

IC, which will come first, the Aeon game, or the Ragnyll defense?

    >If we do the Aeon game first and commit some forces to rescuing them, will we be able to field them in our defense?

It looks like my ability to run an aeon game wed. is compromised by a surprise morning shift.

If this ends up not letting me make aeon on time the aeon sidemission will just have to wait till next week [so just focus on Kolstec defenses for now.]

Planned positions for mortar pits, to allow me to fire in cover. The group on level 5 is where I wish to start at the beginning of the mission, and if the bridge is taken than I will retreat to the group on level 9. I'm politely requesting (or demanding if that suits you) that these fortifications at least be made.

    Templar Wight? Such an honor!

I recall he is a veteran and survivor of the Horace hairesy in Aeon. The Lord Horace declared mustaches, beards, and all manner of facial hair within his lands as the sole domain of the nobility ofhis House. Quite naturally, the rest of Aeon, especially the neighboring lords, were outraged.

To prevent full on civil war breaking out, the Templar were dispatched to Horace's domain Where they encountered a multitude of revolting peasants and knights from other lords, as well as some peasants that were rebelling against Horace's tyranny.

For the Templar and the other lords forces to reach each other, they often had to cut their way through hordes commoners that got caught between them. Very little of Horace's troops actually died in the conflict.

The hairesy finally came to an end when a a templar managed to sneak into Horace's castle and applied poison to the lord's goatee as he slept before being discovered. Lord Horace promptly died the next time he felt the urge to plot and scheme.

Major, how viable would it be to create pillboxes to fortify our side of the bridge? We could also place 'em high in the town, and the Heavy Weapons teams--well, the machine gunners and rocketeers, at least-- would be able to have wide arcs of fire. Mobil Artillery and Scout Snipers might also be able to benefit from these hardened structures.

I've been going over Mana's proposed plan and working through it to get as much out of our forces as possible.

    Some notes for folks.
-Getting kills en masse early on isn't always preferable. We can probably afford to down any invading aircraft, but keeping terror generation down can keep the ball in our court till the enemy brass is emerges. Laying in stealth/covered/foritfied positions till we can get an eyes-on might be advisable to line-holders. (This also may protect you from getting hit at the onset by enemy radio spotters). Once we have our targets, the ambush team along with the Railway Cannon, Artillery, Airstrikes, and Mortar teams can cut down the priority targets. Given a successful opening salvo, we hit them with everything we've got, full overlapping fire like it's RagnyllDay's eve.
[Alternatively we can hit them hard straight away and force their Scifax/Officer types into action, the ambush team will need to work ferociously fast and take them in 1 phase as we try to mop up the aftermath, barring any major Voss secondary wave.]

-Although we have walls, enemy air will be our major threat to our flanks. I advise our Hr teams find good spots along the wall (with a proper fallback point) to take on air-threats as they approach. Once aerial threats are down, they can use the range of their rockets to fire across the chasm. Springer's strider team may prove to be our Impromptu AA battery, being reactionary to whatever the Voss send to us. Keeping our Clovis air-sweeps ready to go as soon as they cross Zone-1 might also be good. As such, the Major and Cpt can handle such things, unless they want me to help in coordination seeing as I can have one of my team hole up in the rear and act independently.
