It’s a chilly out there, ain’t it? So what are you standing around for? Sit down, friend. Fire’s nice and steady, and the story isn’t over yet.

Akasha wakes to another morning on the bed of a stranger, the thatched ceiling the first thing she sees. She get’s clothed, and hunts down a basin of water to wash herself with. The skies are a dull grey above her, heavy with the promise of rain. The folk around her are rushing around trying to accomplish something before the downpour ruins the rest of the day. She thinks she better get going herself, and finds Kret’s wife. She gives the girl a big meal, with a little Armourhide and bread wrapped in some cloth for the trip.

Akasha thanks the woman, and heads back to her hut to gather her things. The elder is waiting for her by the door. „I have talked with my son. What you told him was more than I could have hoped for. The debt is settled. Thank you.” He inclines his head, and she nods in return. „If you need anything, Breaker, then ask for me or my son. We shall see what can be arranged.” He hurries off, and the girl heads inside. Donning her gear is like a ritual for her. She ties her hair together, and let’s the white braid fall to her back. The Gauntlet is like a part of her, the Sledge an extension of her being. A single satchel goes on, the tool of her trade and the pipe inside. Last, her new bow and arrows.

Now, is there anything else she might have forgotten to do?

She might want to ask if anybody in the village needs something from the vicinity of the shrine.

If I remember correctly, people around the city avoided that area completely.
I'm not suggesting making new contracts or debts, just seeing if there's something people want from there. So she can keep her eyes open.

There’s always work to be done. She stalks around the city, and spots Rekew, in heated discussion with Kret. She walks up to him, and explains her request. „Well, Pola the herbswoman has made some requests. She has promised a reward, but it’s not a task most would take on.” She thanks him, and heads to the hovel he pointed at. A wizened old woman sits in front of it, grinding some leaves in a mortar. The girl never imagined someone could be so wrinkled, and what little skin of her arm shows under the rags is mottled with patches of discoloured skin. „Ah, welcome child. What can I help you with?” „I have heard from the elder’s son that you have some tasks you would like accomplished.”

Her grin shows all four teeth. „Yes, oh yes. You are to go to the shrine to the north, yes. I have a need for the Feverweed growing near it. A garish yellow thing with thorns all over. And Dilah’s Blessings as well, a hanful of it’s purple petals would be quite fine. If you are willing, I would welcome some Fire Caps as well. The Burrower wasps have been building their nests closer and closer, the hunters have been complaining.” Akasha nods seriously. „I will bring them to you.” „Such a good child. The shrine, and the groves surrounding it are half a score miles.” Her eyes glitter as she says „You cannot miss them.”

With nothing else, she bids the crone goodbye, and heads off to the wilds.

With a little hurry, she makes her way through the forest paths. The bush is harsher with every step, and no few thorns tear at her. The girl knows she’s getting closer, the sounds of wildlife getting quiter. Finally, the shrine appears before her eyes. Not just any shrine, though, oh Kals no. It’s a temple, it’s grounds spreading for more than mile, the weathered stones overgrown with vegetation. Not even the Kala Cities had temples such as this. A wonder from a bygone age, gods in all shapes and sizes were worshiped here.

The main temple’s towers jut from the middle, tilted and decreipt, patches of the stonework collapsed in. The servants’ housing lies to the left, with the priests’ quearters behind them. To the right, halls of learning and training squares dot the landscape.

Where will she head to next?

The main temple. She can explore the area once she's finished her work and if the temple is safe.

Considering she faced off with a demon a few days ago, she pays whatever homage is customary for the gods the facility is dedicated to.

The main temples should hold her destination. She moves through the thinning vegetation, her feet finding purchase on a road, the cobble stones still in place, if cracked and crumbling. She passes the gates, towering high above, the murals on them smoothed into indistinct shapes by the wind and rain. Akasha walks across empty squares, homes, sanctums yawning dark and empty around her. This place was alive once, with prayer, reverent whispers, and tearful pleading. Small shrines litter the streets, what remains of candles and offerings scattered on the ground in front of them.

Feverweed burst through the stone in bright patches, and Dilah’s Blessings cover the walls, the open flowers filling the air with their sickly sweet smell. She collects a few handfuls from each, wraps them in cloth. Better to be safe than sorry, and you never know, they might come handy. The girl resumes her walk, and soon comes across the main square, a waist deep pool dominating it, dozens of yards long. Pale blue and white lillies dot the dark water, completely still. Not even the wind blows here anymore. Nothing moves. Nothing lives.

The sturdy doors of the temple have fallen off untold centuries ago, and she steps over them, thick layers of dust whipped into the air by her movement. The Glowstone on her left serves her well in the gloom inside. Chambers open from the main hall, each holding a different god, the Huntress, the Smith, the Mother, the Warrior. She pays tribute to each. A drop of blood, a silver coin, a kiss on the cheek, an arrow broken in half. One last god remains. Likantha, the keeper of the dead, the teacher, the sorceress.

She approaches the chamber, the smell of flowers and sickness trailing after her from the satchel. She stops for a moment, to gaze upon the main nave, at the end of the hall. Pews rotten to sludge, and the offerings of people long dead. Bones and coins and jewelry and weapons. And candles. So many candles. She can imagine it, the statues inside, taller than fifty feet, some furious, some serene, all of them majestic and terrifying, basking in the flickering glow. They built no windows here, no stained glass like she’s used to.

She turns to Likantha’s chamber. It is an ossuary, skulls and all kinds of human bones forming chandelliers, pedestals, even depictions of her deeds and tenets. A thousand withered flowers and mountains of melted wax cover the little shrine. You’d be a fool to anger the godess of the dead. But look, she’s fallen. The statue has toppled, leaning against the back wall. And on the ground in front of it is a corpse. It used to be a man once. Leathers and steel armour the carcass, an axe hanging from the belt around it’s waist, alongside a book on a chain. In it’s right, it grips something gleaming, a silver nail, minute carvings reflecting the pale light of the Glowstone.

A voice like the flutter of wings on a dark night speaks, and the form of a slender woman congeals from the shadows, her skin the colour of the midnight sky, her teeth pointed and savage. Eyes like coals stare out from underneath a bazing red mane. „What have you come here to do, little Breaker?”

Likantha is the godess of death, the departed, and destiny. Her handmaindens, the Vkatha, spirits of smoke and shadows guide the souls of the dead to her realm. There, they will be judged, and their rewards and punishments meted out according to their deeds. She is represented with a tome in one hand and a sickle in the other. She knows all that has been, will come to pass, and could have been.

She is also the godess of magic, knowledge, and secrets. All that is said, written or thought is recorded in her library, but none beside her can walk it's halls.

She is distant, but benevolent, but quick to anger, and she suffers not the foolish.

Bow to the spirit. Or whatever is appropriate.
"I've come to this shrine to pay my respect to Likantha before I begin my work, as I have to the other gods beforehand. Perhaps spend a few moments remembering those I've lost recently."

She tries her best to keep her calm.
"The reason why I'm in this temple is that the medicine men of the village nearby asked me to repair one of the Name Pillars. I would also ask if I might be allowed to rectify the damage to this shrine."

The girl knows her manners. With a bow of her head she speaks, hiding the tremor in her voice. „I have come here by the bidding of the people of this shrine, to right a Name Pillar that has fallen. I have paid my respects to the other gods, and wish to do the same to Likantha, and would remedy her of her discomfort.” The creature laughs, quiet and silky. „I see. I will not keep you from it, then, but if you so wish, I shall guide you to the Pillar.” „Thank you, kind spirit.” It stands aside, and she begins her work, trying the statue’s weight and stability. The stone of it is heavier than she expected, and would need quite the force to lift.

„I could do your task for you. If, you would help me in turn.” Akasha turns to the spirit, and it smiles, the horrible face distorting further. „I am trapped, bound to that nail. This incompetent has brought me here, and died from the wounds he suffered. His companion was the one who toppled the Pillar. If you would take the nail, I would become yours to command.” It tilts it’s head to the right, gesturing with one hand at the door leading out. „I wish to leave this place. I have been trapped for decades, with no compainion but mice and insects.”

What’d she say to that? Well...

This kind of talk from a being this discomforting to be around is more than just suspicious.

"Please bear with my suspecting mind, kind spirit, but I would like you to tell me more about who and what exactly you are."

Though she thinks this ethereal being could be Vkatha, she never saw one and it cannot hurt to ask before one acts and possibly spells the doom of oneself and this blessed place misled by the cunning words of a demon.

    >If you would take the nail, I would become yours to command.

She thinks for a moment, and shakes her head.
"I do not desire to have command over anybody. I'd be honoured if you were to accompany me, but only by your own free will."

She then moves to inspect the carcass, paying close attention to the book. Checking for any hints that might give some insight into the nature of the spirit .
"Please, let me assure you that I mean no disrespect, but I've learned to be careful around things I don't understand these past days."

She said "I do not desire to have command over anybody. I'd be honoured if you were to accompany me, but only by your own free will." She crouches down by the carcass, mummified in the dry air. The writing of the tome seems serkesh, from it’s look she thinks it’s their holy book. „Please bear with my suspecting mind, kind spirit, but I would like you to tell me more about who and what exactly you are. I mean you no disrespect, but I have learned to be careful around things I do not understand." It giggles, and dances in front of the girl, leaning down so their faces are level.

„Cautious. I do not mind. What am I? When I came to be, I was Hati, a spirit of blood and violence, of vengeance and rage. A monk heard of my crimes, and came to the hills I haunted, bound me to the nail. Since then, I have been many things.” Her eyes gaze into the distance, flaring up like burning embers. ”Temple guardian, guide to heroes, companion to sorcerers. Warrior and lover, murderer and wetnurse. I have no name, no form, no core. I am what my master wants me to be. Take up the nail. Give me a name. Make me something more than the shade in front of you. In kind, I shall serve you till your last breath. I know nothing else.”

"Be so kind and let me ask three more things, Hati." she replied. The creature steps back, still bent low, and circles around. „Yes, of course. Ask what you wish, but remember, I am only Hati if my master names me such. I am merely a shadow of the one that could be.” Akasha inclines her head. „Very well. The wounds on him, were they your doing? Did he bring you here for a reason?" She pauses before asking the next question. „And what will happen once I pick up the nail?"

It shakes it’s head. „No. His companion struck him down. A swrodsman, his blade bearing a demon. A thing of hunger and madness. It devour his soul in his moment of weakness, and took his flesh and bones as a vessel. I could do nothing. My master thought an angel of his god spoke to him, and he wished for a child. So a child I was, weak and scared, powerless to save him.” It stands on her toes, her walking more of a dancer’s than the caged beast’s before. „He knew I was not his angel, his Naklosa, so by his faith I could only be a demon. He asked me if there was a way to be rid of me, and I told him of the place beneath these temples, a place of power where he could kill me. So he took me here, and told the haunted swordsman he met on his journey of it. They came here together.”

It stops, and looks the girl dead in the eyes. „If you were to take on the nail, naught would happen to you. A lesser one would bear a burden. But you have been unbound, your shackles broken, your soul scarred and mangled and free.” A look of sadness appears for a brief moment on it’s face. „If you do not want me, Breaker, then cover the nail in cloth or leather and take it with you. If you do not let your skin touch it, you shall not become my master. I beg you, do not leave me here.”

”Very well. I will test my luck. Let us take your words to the test.” She steps up to it, and smiles. „Judging from what you said, I guess not much of this form will remain. So this might be goodbye." She embraces the black figure, the flesh cool and pliant under her touch. „I'm glad I got to meet you." It looks befuddled, but returns the hug. „Thank you for your kindness, Breaker. Do not worry, whatever I shall become, I will remember this.” Akasha pulls away, lowers herself to one knee, takes off the Gauntlet, and grabs the nail with her left hand. She looks up, the words appearing in her mind. „Become my strong arm, my shield, my hammer. I name you... Khasi.” The creature shivers, it’s flesh roiling, and the nail feels like a hot brand, a stream of white fire flowing through it up the girl’s hand. She cries out in pain just as the shade does as well.

It bursts into a torrent of black strands, clouding her vision for a few moments. As it passes, she sees a woman, a few years older than her, her hair in a black braid that hangs to her ankles, her slanted eyes the colour of a glacier, her skin like bronze. Furrs cover her shoulders, the loose crimson tunic underneath reaching to her tighs. On a frayed rope belt, a naked blade, heavy, wide and curved. She smiles, bowing slightly with a hand in front of her heart. „Thank you Mistress. I am Khasi, guardian of travellers, the sentinel of crossroads. Order me as you see fit.” The girl fumbles for words. „I, I wish you to right that statue.” Khasi bows again. „Yes, Mistress.” She steps up to the stone, wraps her arms around it, and lifts it back into place with nary a sound or effort. „What shall be my next task, Mistress?”

”Thank you, Khasi. Do you still remember the way to the Pillar?” She curtsies. „Of course, Mistress.” „Then I would like you to lead me there. But first, I something I must do.” She lights a candle on an altar, placing a circle of flowers around it, then kneels, and recites the Litany of the Fallen. The prayer is short. The listing of the names of those she remembers is not. Dozens upon dozens, from merchants and neighbours to friends and family. She’ll wipe away the tears when she finishes. For now, they flow freely. They say that the Vkatha collect them, and carry them to the other side. When souls are measured, tears weigh heavy. If spilled in anger, fear or hatred, they can damn. In grief, sorrow, and remembrance, they can absolve.

She rises, breathing deeply to calm down. „Let us go.” „Yes, Mistress.” She stares at the woman for a moment. „Could you not call me Mistress? I do not want a servant. But I would welcome a companion.” Khasi frowns, asking „But then what should I call you?” „Akasha.” The spirit bows her head. „Akasha, then. Please, follow me.” She leads the girl outside, through the halls worn smooth by the thousands of feet. They turn towards the Quarters.

Simple buildings line the narrow roads here, stacked high, their tiny windows glaring at the two. Pillars stand tall in the middle of every square, but the one she’s looking for is deeper inside. They walk through empty homes when the road is blocked, and wade through ankle deep pools where the canals have flooded. Soon, they see the Pillar, waist high, fallen down by the pedestal it stood on. A man sits on it with his back to the girl, his clothes reduced to dirty rags. A sword, sinister looking, lies on his lap. He is emaciated, pale, and something underneath his skin twists and bulges in fron of their eyes. „I see you have found a master, little spirit. Good. I have been getting bored.” His voice booms, echoing off the walls.

Khasi turns to her, concerned. „Akasha, it is the demon I have told you about.” „You have come for the Pillar, yes? I have heard it. The shadows tell me much.” The woman grips her sword. She’s nervous, but determined. „Underneath the temple grounds there are channels, wards and spells wowen into the walls that contain holy waters. It is trapped inside the defense that should have kept it out. If we step inside, it will try to kill us. I am not certain I could best it.” The laughter makes the girl’s skin crawl. „You are still weak, little spirit. It is not a question. I will slay both of you.” Khasi’s knucles turn white as she grits her teeth. „But if you are determined to do what you came here for, I might now of a way. Above the halls of learning, the proving grounds, the observatories, stands a tower of Likantha. It was made for ones such as you. Words of power are granted to those who pass the tests set by her priests.”

    To that, the girl said...

    Just a thought.
Haven't the hunters been murmuring this place was haunted?
Couldn't it be our new companion / pseudo-nepalese guardian spirit was the reason for this rumor?
Anyway, we should see if we could not find a way to repopulate this place. It would be a shame to see it forgotten and reduced to rubble and ruins when it could be home to people and gods alike.

„I trust you with my life, Khasi. Lead the way.” The spirit bows, and heads on the way back. The demon’s words ring sharply from the crumbling walls. „Do not keep my waiting for long, girl. I might grind this Pillar of yours to dust if you do.” The two walk back, crossing to the temples to shorten their path. They pass shrines to strange gods from foreing lands, with the heads of animals, their offerings in clay jars. They circle around squares entwined by Razorwire, trample on Feverweed and scale rubble where the buildings have fallen apart. Finally, they gaze upon the tower.

It’s walls are carved with a thousand symbols, it’s dome like a ziggurat with statues on each step. There never was a gate to it. All who wished to enter were allowed. Few were found worthy. „Four tests await you inside. Four levels. I will accompany you, but I cannot help. If you fail, your life will not be spared.” Akasha nods, biting her lip. She steps through. The hall has a single stairway leading up, twisting around. Beyond that, there are only the runes etched into every surface. „You only need to be able to cross to the stairs.” So she does, feeling nothing more than a slight tug as she walks up to it, the spirit by her side.

They ascend, the stairs leading in a dizzying spiral. The next hall is similar, with a circle on the floor in the exact middle. A word has been bored into the stone. A large door blocks the stairway leading up, the symbols on it shining with a dull glow.„Here, they test if you have the gift, the divinge spark. The word only appears to those that posess it.” The girl frowns. „What, Paktekantha? I’m not sure-” The door opens with a deafening rumble. „That was easy. Is it all like this?” she asks as they climb higher. „All but the last. The next hall tests your blood, your ancesty.” It is nothing more than a gate that opens to the emre touch of her Gauntlet. She’s starting to doubt if there really is anything here.

She arrives at the final floor, her legs and lungs aching from the climb. It is almost like the last, but the door bears no markings, no symbols. It is made out of black steel. „The last test. You have been tried for purity, your gift, your blood. Now, all that is left is your strength of will. You are to open that gate by willing it to be so.” „I do not quite understand. I am to think of it?” „Force it to open with your mind, yes. Be careful, Akasha. This last test is not to be underestimated.” The girl steps closer to the gate, eyeing it’s dark bulk. She tires to think about opening it. Nothing happens. So she calms her mind, and tries again.

A cold, vile presence shoots through her like an arrow, the gate pulling at her, drawing her towards it. It gleams hungry, frost spreading from it, covering the walls in a heartbeat. She fights it, pushing everything she has at it. It might just be enough. Maybe.

She gives it all she’s got, pouring her will into it. Khasi’s voice comes from somewhere far away, concerned, but she doesn’t have the time to pay attention. The cold seeps into her, her breath misting, icy water filling her legs. It’d be easy to stop right now, to just let it all go, give in to the numbness. But she never was one to go the easy way. She pools what she’s got left, and makes it into a wall around herself, cutting off the gate from her. Then she starts to move it, pushing the chill back from the room, inch by inch, bit by bit. The gate shudders as it’s essence is confined back inside it. The wall becomes a wedge, and it slams into the thing that inhabits the steel. She redoubles the weight behind it, and the gate shrieks, the metal cracking and peeling. With a last push, the leafs fly open, and she collapses.

The spirit appears beside her in a flash, catching her. „You did it. The only thing left to do is choose your prize.” She helps the girl climb, supporting her weight like she’s nothing more than a child. The last floor, the very top. Four alcoves mark the wall, each with a single word written above them. Khasi breaks the silence. „Vrath. The untamed, the evergrowing. Mastery over flames. Karh. Flowing, shifting. Lordship over the waters. Nifa. Always racing, never caught. The winds at your beck and call. Kotu. Calm, still, strong. The earth at your command. The four Words gifted by Likantha to the Sisters, the first to use magic. The cornerstones of sorcery. Choose only one, and choose wisely.”

The Four sisters were each given a Word, and they expanded their magic based upon them. A powerful sorceror or sorceress can change Maél around them with a mere thought, though getting there is not an easy task.

Basically, the Words are the 101 of magic, the most primal manifestation of control over the world. Plenty strong if you train the skills, incredible control over the element of choice, but not the finest of the craft. Manipulation, creation and movement of the element is the main part of it, though their properties can be applied to other thing. Earth is physical and solid. Wind is ethereal and immaterial. Fire is growth, consumption, build up, whiel water is flow, form and consistency.

An image, a sensation, an idea, knowledge, power, a thousand different things. Nifa. There is no other word for it. The divine mandate, the Word that describes, creates, forms and controls. It fills her head, rooting itself deeply. She stumbles outside. She feels the air around her, inside her lungs, swirling around the tower in intricate patterns.
