    Last night's thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/16414965/

Let's try to figure out the mechanics best we can. It seems like some people in the thread may have purchased the rule-book, so when those are in we'll have more info hopefully. I would buy it but I have no means to scan it or translate it.

    Take a wild guess

    >In this world, humanity has been destroyed.
In this world, everyone is dead.
In this world, no one dies anymore.
Only the dead remain to act.

The protagonists of Nechronica: The Long, Long Sequel are young girls with the misfortune to have hearts. The dolls. Put simply, this is a game where you play girl zombies and fight other zombies.

The dead can move again through the necromancer who rules the ruined world. He serves as both the game’s ultimate boss, and a mechanism to move it forward. That is because it is the necromancer who gives these girls hearts. In a world of puppets, these dolls who have their own will, and can cry and laugh are mere toys to the necromancer. He sends enemies at them, and enjoys the tragedy or comedy that results.

These dolls are already dead, and do not die merely from being broken.

They’re already quite dead, after all.

The world is already finished too.

So, let’s have some tea under a lead-gray sky, and tell tales of a long, long sequel.

Sounds like something that could be played out intrestingly depressively, can it? Is there too much pedogurofactor (assumptions on having a glimpse on the comic) to ruin it or can it be worked out as an awesome game everyone enjoyed and got depressed over?

    >The zombie children we started with very quickly became tragic characters with real emotions as we tried to push our emotions and feel out the relationships. By the end of the first combat, every character became very real, and the over-the-top backdrop became a stage for serious and dramatic storytelling. At the end of the scenario, when I ripped off my jaw to attach it to the head of the Doll we had to destroy so that it can talk (nothing else was left of its body), everyone got real quiet. Before the situation became violent, we had promised never to abandon it. It was moving in a way that even Yuuyake Koyake didn’t do for me.

The thread was still alive! It cannot die it can only be torn apart. Or..something

Glad to see others with interest, and I'm looking forward to the translated character sheet. If it's not too much trouble the premade characters being translated as well might help us understand the mechanics, what the options are etc.

I was the person in the last thread posting the translations (and OP of this thread) and if I get the full PDF of the book I will be able to get some bits from him, since he seemed interested and likes /tg/, the main problem is the quality. His japanese isn't perfect and translation takes a while.

The guy I know is way too busy to translate it, so that option's out, but he's interviewed the writer of Nechronica and according to him, he's anxious to have it translated to English. He also knows the guy who runs the YarukiZero blog, and has told me that he plans to translate it, so maybe we can spam up the comments section there? Send a bunch of e-mails? Fuck if I know. Either way the writer is totally okay with fantranslations while he looks for a way to get stateside release. Well can the developer provide a clean PDF for us? Wishing too much, I assume. Maybe ask if one will be for sale online soon, as I'd rather wait and pick THAT up. Usually cheaper, no shipping from japan, no tearing up a lovely book, and a lot less work in general for a higher quality highlightable pdf.

If we had THAT getting translation would be much easier. It seems like the publisher has other books available in pdf, so maybe there's an ETA.

In the mean time let's just send that guy some comments like you said. I don't want to throw out a paypal fund just yet, since I'm not sure even if we got the money it could result in a clean scan. I'll head over to rpg-books irc and see if any scanners are on, maybe we could talk to someone who had the proper hardware and see if they'd be willing to help.

d66 blogger here. I was hoping to get the character sheet translated soon, but I've got so much stuff on my plate right now that I don't think it's going to get done for a couple weeks.

Fan translations are sort of a tricky thing. I wish I could tell you all that I'm going to translate it and put it out for free, but that'd be shitting all over the author's good will and intellectual rights. I wish I could say go for it, translate it all you want, but then it'll likely never get finished (but who knows?), and anyone that wanted to actually translate it and publish it legally (possibly me or Ewen Cluney) would have the fan translation looming, and that makes it much less tempting to do so. I wish I could say I was going to translate it and publish it soon, but that takes lots of time. Lots.

So this puts me in sort of a difficult position where I all I can really promise is a translated character sheet, tell people about the mechanics, and invite people to play with me over Skype, but not actually be able to put rules online. Maybe sometime in the future I'll do something like Andy K and I did with Ryuutama, where we distribute the rules to those who own the book.

It's a great game though, so I hope that some of you have the chance to enjoy it.

Is there even a chance of this game being officially printed in America?
It just seems a bit... much. I'm not sure that there would be a large enough market for it in America.

Maid RPG was one thing, but this one is pretty extreme.
Still, post up if you run Skype games. I'd love a chance to play this system.

Ewen Cluney is the guy who translated Maid right? The games are by the same author so I'd say we should bother him about doing a translation. I'll fire off a email or PM on RPGnet to him over the next couple days.

I could see it being put out as a PDF. I've spoken to the publisher and writer, and they've expressed a lot of interest in PDF sales, so I'm sure they'd be up for it.

I'll try posting here next time I run a Skype game. Hopefully people can sync up to my time zone.

This was just posted on that Yakuri blag:

"So, I would also very much like to see an English translation of Nechronica, but there are a few issues with that, particularly for me personally. In particular I have a business relationship with the designer/publisher, which makes participating in a fan translation a particularly awkward proposition for me. Kamiya doesn’t feel that the game is a good fit for the American market either, though if enough people express interest I will seriously consider trying to talk him into letting us license it. If he’s really given his blessing to a fan translation as someone on /tg/ has claimed I’d be much more inclined to lend a hand, but regardless I have so much stuff on my plate right now (including gearing up for the release of another translated RPG!) that it’ll be a while before I can really spare the time to contribute in any meaningful way.

I do have a translation of the Nechronica replay from Tsugihagi Tayori 3 (the one they have available as a free PDF) though, and it would make a great sneak peek for anyone who wants a better idea what the game is actually like. I’ll see about releasing it into the wild soon.

Is there any chance you could c/p the exact response you got, with more info on who said it etc? "The write says its cool guys" isn't enough to convince people. If I can say "so-and-so interviewed him and here's the exact quote..." That makes our 'fantranslation is ok' argument stronger.

Ok OP here. I've been looking into this Kickstarter thing and it seems perfect for this.

So my question is, how much would we need to raise to make this happen?

I'm thinking if we get a translator, either the d66 guy or Ewan or whoever, to agree to help...
    >We raise money
    >He releases the translated PDF/book
    >Donators receive a copy for free
    >He can then go on to sell it for profit to others

The kickstart would be an incentive to work on the project. Or at the very least, to help out with the fan translation (which I assume either of these guys are capable of getting permission to work on.. if the author really did give it.)

Alright it seems I may have misinterpreted this wording a little.

"I interviewed the writer of Nechronica, too, and he's anxious to have it translated into English. I know Ewen Cleney, the YarukiZero guy, said a while ago he wants to translate it, but I don't know if he's going to call dibs on it"

I didn't realize the two were in legal cahoots with each other. I figured Ewen was just another fan, and so it'd be a fan project, not a sticky publishing affair, so that's my bad for putting words in the writer's mouth.

    >>16443672
    >>16443454
All we /really/ need is just the PDF. Ordering the book makes things difficult and we'll have to wait weeks for shipping and scanning and it'll be lower quality in the end. I thought the idea was basically just to get him to start distributing digital copies, for someone to buy one, and then for us to translate it so we can actually play it? I'd say that we could promise to keep it to ourselves to make English translation more favourable but after all the work I put into Adeptus Evangelion and seeing it get leaked all over the place, I don't really trust /tg/. It depends on whether he actually plans on releasing it in America. If there's no market for it, then we'll just translate it and nothing will be lost. If he intends to sell it here, then it's likely he wont like us making a fan translation since it'll cut into profits. Either way digital distribution is just a win/win for everyone.

I mean... any download link is saved to /rs/ and can be googled as well.. it's not like this is a private forum.

It would be one or the other. A fan translation that we went all out on, making it awesome... or a legal translation. You can't have both, one makes the other impossible.

The only middle ground would be if someone with the book and the ability to translate were to release a "Just the facts, ma'am" style rules book. No fluff, none of the art, just bare bones you need to throw a game together and make a character. That way when the full translation is released there's a reason to buy it.

I'm going to have to talk to d66roc/Matt and Kamiya and figure stuff out because the last I'd head Kamiya didn't think Nechronica would work in the U.S., but if he's changed his mind to the point of being "anxious to have it translated" I want to do what I can to make it happen.

Personally as a possible publisher I wouldn't have a problem with a bare-bones fan translation being out there--hopefully it would ultimately result in more sales to keep the whole endeavor going--but me, Matt, and Andy K all have our own respective publishing projects to juggle right now, so it'd take a long time for any of us to be ready to tackle translating and publishing Nechronica. (Plus I'd eventually like to translate and publish a TRPG that's not by Kamiya, since there's a ton of other great ones out there.)

I definitely understand your enthusiasm. I'm itching to get my hands on Nechronica even just to read it, so I'm jealous of Matt living in Japan and being able to attend JGC.

Aside from the nearly-ready-can't-talk-about-it-just-yet project, I'm very interested in doing Meikyuu Kingdom, and I'd like to take a crack at something from F.E.A.R. (stuff like Double Cross and Alshard). Also, Kamiya is at the forefront of a small but growing doujin TRPG scene, so there's stuff like Bleach: Old School Rockers (a tongue in cheek Bleach RPG) and Giant Allege (about a post-apocalyptic future where lawyers fight in giant robots on their clients' behalf) I want to look into.

I'm sorry that this is somewhat offtopic but that Giant Allege thing sounds downright insane an amazing.

I just realized that I don't know anything about the Japanese RPG scene, like... at all. It's a very closed scene unlike the European ones, there's probably a lot of hidden gems like these out there just waiting to be found.

Well you can definitely order Nechronica even if you're not living in Japan. Some people in the other thread managed to order it, and I almost did before deciding it'd be better to wait until I could actually read it.

Just go to amazon.jp or w.e, it's definitely there. The link is in the old thread. There's a way to input your shipping address if you're not in Japan, too. The yen just gets converted to your currency.

There's also some other nechronica related book but idk what it is.

I have actually ordered stuff from Amazon Japan before. It's just that the shipping to the U.S. is ridiculously expensive. OTOH I can bug the designer to send me a copy.

The other Nechronica book is a full-length replay by the way. That's a very standard thing in the Japanese TRPG scene. More popular games like Arianrhod (F.E.A.R.'s cutesy Dragon Quest/Rangarok Online style fantasy game) can literally get a few dozen of those published.

Speaking of (and I don't mean to derail this thread but I'm sure if I made a new one just for asking this question it would get completely ignored), are there any good descriptions out there of exactly how Meikyuu works? I've only heard a few snippets here and there about the concept, but none of the whole real meat of how the system actually works. If the descriptions are in Japanese, I can read it just fine, I just suck at actually searching for things on the moonweb.

I think that there actually could be a real market for a lot of Japanese TRPGs in the west, if it were possible to cut down the price a bit and do digital-only releases; this is especially relevant with, as Ewen mentioned, the doujin TRPG scene, and the amount of grassroots support you can gather for independent releases of things in the nerd community (look how well Recettear did). If there's one thing gamers love (in my experience), it's cheap and kinda weird stuff.

A replay is a transcript of play, usually of a full game session, though in some cases there'll be multi-volume replays of a whole campaign. There's a link to a Nechronica replay I translated, and the Maid RPG book has three of them. They're a common thing in Japan because the hobby is so niche and fragmented that it serves as a good tool to teach people how to play, and they've kind of become a sub-hobby of books that people will read for fun.

    >>16447558

I have the Meikyuu Kingdom core rulebooks and I even got to play it with the designers when they were at Gen Con. I can write up a summary at some point, but it'll take a little time.

I am indeed thinking about getting into translating some short PDF-only games. Bleach OSR and Giant Allege are around 20-30 pages each, and I'm hoping to see more PDF releases from Japan in the future as the doujin TRPG designers get less freaked out by the idea.
