So I'm coming up with my own Chaos warband, and I've hit a snag - will Chaos Space Marines join a Chaos warband that is predominantly human, and obey a human leader? Or will they just go "LAWL FUNNY LITTLE HUMAN I KILL YOU NOW"? Or does it vary?
    >> Anonymous 10/11/11(Tue)21:47 No.16596369
They would need a reason to follow, rather than just take them over.
    >> Anonymous 10/11/11(Tue)21:48 No.16596375
    is this an undivided warband?

They're kind of like orks in that regard. The biggest & strongest one becomes the leader.

    >>16596369

I was thinking a human warband that was already quite powerful, with a small fleet and lots of troops and some advanced armaments, and a few unaffiliated chaos marines joining here and there so they'd have someone to kill with, or rather "worship" with (it's a Khorne warband, just so you know). Not an organized group of marines joining all at once, and compared to the regular human population they are vastly out-numbered.
    >> Anonymous 10/11/11(Tue)21:52 No.16596415
If the leader is sufficiently badass. Probably only if they are a powerful sorcerer or Daemon Prince.
    >> Anonymous 10/11/11(Tue)21:52 No.16596418
    >>16596363
Basically, if the warband is powerful enough that it would could crush the CSM fairly easily - say, a full regiment of traitor guard with sufficient dark mechanicus backup, they'll obey. At least, as much as Chaos obey anyone. So no more than the normal amount of backstabbing and what have you.

If it's just some weak warband that promises them stuff later, they CSM would probably just kill them all.

The marines will take over. They will challenge the leader to a duel, and the marine will win, and he will become the new leader. That's how Khorne warbands work.

Regular men can be badass too. I mean, just look at the Imperium's heroes in the IG. Gaunt and Yarrick and Creed and what have you. I think CSM would follow a human leader if he has that degree of tactical genius. Or if he's some sort of extremely charismatic / fanatic preacher of the word of Chaos.
    >> Orky_Boss 10/11/11(Tue)21:55 No.16596453
I think that it is quite possible, but the humans (more importantly the chaos lord) would have to have had many successful battles, and have gotten pretty lucky with his/her gifts from the gods.

Also if tha's the case, it'd probably be "LAWL FUNNY LITTLE HUMAN YOU THINK YOU CAN BEAT ME?" And then he procedes to be beaten after a long fight before finally submittng.

Hmm... I don't want that to happen. One of the main themes of the warband is that they consider themselves crusaders against decadence and tyranny, and that they've convinced themselves that Khorne is a god of righteousness rather than just warfare and hatred.

Any ideas on how to work around that? I'd still like to be able to have a few chaos marines in the warband.

Make the Marines have their own ideology, and recognize the warband for what it is -- an excuse and a farce. Let them be from non-Khornate worship (maybe in Khorne's disfavor, actually), and then you can say that the small number of them are along for the ride. Shouldn't be an issue.

As said before, the leader would have to be sufficiently mutated to be on par/stronger than a terminator CSM.

Basically like an Ork Warboss. Perhaps use an Ork Warboss model to represent it? Human that was bulked up by Khorne. Just need to change the head.

They glorify Khorne by waging war, wherever they go. Their leader isn't interested in silliness like personal duels, he just wants to see his war machine crush everything in their way.

So if they challenge him to a duel he laughs in their faces as a hundred lasguns are suddenly pointed in their direction.

Chaos Marines, yes even Bezerkers, aren't nessecarily mindless killing idiots. They're still super fucking highly trained, highly tactical, brutally intelligent soldiers. If it was mutually beneficial for Chaos Marines seperated, exiled or final survivors of a warband to join a large host of humans, it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine that they'd just follow along with their plans, even if it was only until something better came along.

If he calls Baneboss out from a ways off, then he;s probably fucked, but if he walks up to the Baneboss first, he could probably clamber up at least onto the hull before any guns get brought to bear, assuming wacky warp mutation hasn't made any of those bolter mounts more flexible than standard models

OP here, I'm gonna share the back story so you guys know what you're dealing with.

The leader of the warband was never any part of a formal military structure, and never received any formal training, but he is naturally strong and accrued lots of battle experience in street skirmishes before he embraced Khorne. The warband was originally a large horde of rebels on a hive world that was ruled by a particularly tyrannical and decadent upper class, comprised of regular citizens who took up arms and traitor guardsmen. They were so enraged at the rulers and inflicted so much death and destruction that Khorne reached out to them. By the time the rebellion was over most of them were dead, the large majority of the survivors being traitor IG, and the remnants of the rebel mob formed a more organized group, scrounged up what equipment they could, stole some ships and took off to look for more "sinners" to "punish."

They see themselves as crusaders for justice, rather than simple warriors, and they bear a particularly ferocious hatred for anyone who is wealthy and powerful, and especially the followers of Slaanesh. They are quite young, having only existed for just 20 years, but their initially large size allowed them to do some damage for the first decade or so, with heavy losses. They are mainly pirates, preying on trade vessels, and whenever the opportunity presents itself they attack small and isolated Imperial Guard regiments for equipment, and of course skulls and blood.

I haven't yet decided how many ships or what kind they have yet, but I'm thinking their numbers will be in the high thousands and mostly traitor guardsmen. I also haven't decided how much and with what Khorne has blessed them yet, but their leader has definitely been beefed up quite a bit.

Well, if you want an excuse for your leader to not have to duel a Chaos Space Marine up-front, you should probably work extreme discipline somewhere into their background, such that none of them will be impressed by CSM's "hurr lets duel" shenanigans, and view it as sloppy self-gratifying bullshit.

Alternately, just have their leader blinged the fuck out with augmetics and gifts of Khorne, lore-wise, such that he can at least take on a regular Chaos marine.

I mean, it's 40k. Heroes of any kind, even mortal men, generally shit all over the baser units of their enemies, just by virtue of being unique characters.

Megakain's first great victory was at the planet of Sparania XII. There the chaos warband that had picked him up was engaging a force of Orks. While trying to kill a butterfly that was flying in and out of his chasis, Megakain fired off his main cannon and missed his target, the shell instead flying a kilometer across the battlefield and landing directly on the Ork warboss. The warband quickly routed the leaderless Orks and slaughtered them all, while praising Megakain for his great kill.
