2 KB Farming it Quest, Pt II, the laughter amongst the trees farmer fa/tg/uy 11/06/11(Sun)22:59 No.16865876
You are Bill Johnson, son of John twenty something years old. Born and raised on the outskirts of the village of Glaecu, located within the barony of Lord Istavaan. You have murdered a messenger of your lord, finding new riches, a plant from a foreign land and letter involving plots.

You are a farmer. Your goal is to farm. And avoid being arrested for murder of a man of higher station.

but, for right now, you have wood to gather, and the issue of something following you around in the trees.

    alright lets get this going.

You're standing in the forest, after successfully navigating inwards after being lost once. The cattle seem a little ancy but, nothing major. The logs are loaded up and you're sweating mighty fierce though even as you do, You feel a cool breeze brushing past your bearded cheek.

"Well, little farmer man. What brings you to the wood?" A female voice coolly.

With a snort, you set back to work ushering your cattle away from the voice. As you continue, you rely on your hardy beasts wisdom to navigate. The way seems to betting harder and harder to make out. the paths are blending in on themselves and from time to time you catch glimpses of a woman of unnatural beauty hiding amongst the trees. Cold blue eyes looking out at you with hunger.

In fact, so much that I have come to offer services to you, Some of which you might ind, most interesting...."

As the voice explains this, a figure steps from the forest, tall and lithe, there is a cold beauty to it though it resembles an elf, it surpasses even them in grace and awe. Wearing little more than long pale hair and some well places leaves she steps between the cattle petting them as she walks closer.

"Oh worry not child. Your help will come as the night falls, merely leave an offering of a handful of wheat seeds and they shall do a bit of work for you. As for the deal you've agreed to..."

A drop of dew that should have burned off falls from the trees landing upon the canvas. It expands and takes the shape of an elegant vase, clear cold water sits within it and images of trees are carved into it.

"Put thine plant within and mix three drops of blood, a pinch of dirt and a fish plucked from the river that's been allowed to dry three days, and ground into a fine powder. Your plant will grow with this.

You arrive back at your home with little fanfare. The cattle happily go to grazing as you set the logs in a pile by your door. You set the vase on the table for the time being and though it was down to embers, the fire is now going nicely keeping the shack pleasantly warm.

Sitting in the corner hidden by flickering shadows is a figure...one that looks familiar from yesterday. A pale Elven face stares at you with cold, hard eyes.

"I thought I recognized that smell. It seems you have something that Lord Istavaan had intended to gift to man more worthy than yourself." he says calmly, a smile crossing thin lips.

    the elf wrinkles his nose.

"Very clever story peasant." he stands his ground, hands still moving steadily. Behind you hear the sound of rustling leaves. "I know that horse, I went to the stable yard yesterday when I picked up the flowers scent. You did not 'buy' such an animal, the stench of blood covered it and this house."

As he finished speaking the roof of your shack begins to tremble, its supports being pushed on by some massive force.

"You dare think that you can pull a trick upon one of the green men? I know a killer when I smell one little man, and you reek of death and of the spice."

As he finishes the sentence the roof of your home peels away, curling vines pressing against it until it breaks away, spreading outward like a flower, fill the small room with sunlight. All around you are curling twisting plants, large hand shaped leaves growing from the stalks.

As she says this she takes the heart from the small fuzzy creature, ripping it from the body, bloodied, she hold out the still pulsating piece of flesh. "Eat of its flesh child, and have his grace, let the heathen feel my wrath for making a mockery of my power."

The heart sits before you beating of its own accord. Without a second thought you scoop it out of her hand and swallow it whole. Letting the beat work it down your throat. The taste of frozen blood fills your mouth as you do so.

for a second nothing happens, Then it begins to fill your body, a trembling energy, vibrant, strong.

With a sigh you drag the elf man out to the fields, Slicing his throat and spilling his blood upon the land, where drops of it land nothing immediately seems to happen save the gurgling gasping sound of someone trying to scream after having their larynx and various major blood vessles severed.

"Well now, you are most ruthless." A feminine voice whispers as a face appears in the pooling blood at your feet. The fae looks at you with something akin to admiration.

"Sadly, my gift will not last, though consider what it leaves behind a token of appreciation. I shall take the heathens body now, consider it my payment for having to come forth in your time of need..."

As she says this the elfs body begins to move of its own accord, vining plants bursting from the wound, eyes, mouth, ear and nose. Jerkily it begins to shuffle away towards the woods. As if to does this your body is racked by a sickening feeling. Your insides twist and heave for a brief moment before you lose your breakfast, coughing up blood and half digested viscera with one final heave something disgustingly hard and solid leaps from your throat and lands softly in the dirt by your feet....it would seem to be a small heart shaped gem.

Hauling apart what little of your house is still standing, you manage to construct a simple lean to, the oak pieces acting as poles to hold up the rather shaky piece of wall you've found.

On the plus side your cattle seem to be content to clean up the mess the greenman left behind in the process of trashing your place and the vase evne though it was in the middle of this whole shindig is intact.

Pulling apart one of the tough stringy vines you create a bit of fish line which you tie to sapling from near the hedge row, its a young green ash, springy and straight. Good fishing rod material. With typical callous nature you dig up the messenger and yank a few beetles that were crawling admidst the corpse for bait and fasion a simple hook from one of the nails of your house.

Taking a knee, partly to catch your breath you hurl a handful of dirt at the creature.

It is not amused. Its large watery red eyes do not enjoy the sensation of having grainy silty dirt meet mucous membrane. with a scream it clutches at its face trying to clear its eyes.

hefing your axe and opting for the overhand swing you bring it down on the creatures head, shattering the skull and laying it low. For a few moments it continues to scrabble trying to get back up. You of course, will have none of that and proceed to smash the skull a few more times.

    A few tenants:
Magic in the sense of wizards doesn't exist, greenmen are a good example its often the harnessing of magical beings that powers magic.

Istavaan isn't high up on the food chain he's a minor lord at best.

The country is much like germany in climate

So far so good- I mean, it's like grimdark in Harvest Moon, with all western medieval fantasy.
A power berry? No, we get to eat a bloody raw heart of a hare (or was that a rabbit?) to gain its agility! And we probably have to do it repeatedly if we want to get more...

Quick, set up a hare snare and a place to keep them!
Also, do we sell the gem, and make people suspicious, or gift it to the maid, and make HER suspicious?

Also, sprites? Faeries? We got fae, old fae of the Black Forest, and it approves of our bloodthirsty farming style.

Note, don't use the fae helpers to till the land. We do it ourself until the land is too large to be tilled alone (with plows and pullers) in a day. We keep wheat all year long, and give out seeds that we plant, keep, and harvest ourself, if we could.

How much was the tithe needed by Istaavan again? We at least need to prepare that much and extra, for seed for helpers, for eating, for selling, and for ale...

And how many should we start brewing for ale? How does tomato wine taste like, eh?

Projects for fae helpers (brownies? Or worse?): rabbit/hare hutch, channels/wooden aquivers to prepare for irrigation+fish pond from river.

World-wise, how are fae viewed? As normal, as in, terrifying?
Are there religion? Are we using 3.5e Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, other systems, or your own pantheon?

How comes the undead in this world? Negative plane leaks, accumulation of negative emotional trauma (VERY violent/tarumatic death, if we consider the setting: medieval fantasy), dead evil guys (this are probably inherently evil undeads, and not just your common violent ones), necromancy...

Wait, no wizards, so no necromancy. Probably we have witch-doctors, or just plain witches and warlocks who dabbled with the dark planes to control the dead, eh?

How about politics, do we even care?
    Economics! Now THAT we care.
Prices of the produce at this moment?
    >> Anonymous 11/08/11(Tue)20:36 No.16888943
given the nature of politics and economics being tied to together I'd imagine so, also for all we know maybe different faerie do different things?

    >> weird (Pessimistic & Perverted Bloody Farmer) 11/08/11(Tue)21:20 No.16889422
Honeybee hives, if we want to make mead.
And flowers, they said tulips fetch a lot at medieval times. How about others? Maybe red poppies?
Herbs and spices, too. The ones that grew nicely in medieval german, maybe like basil, coriander, leek, foxglove, mandrake...

Regarding fae, I actually find her less twisted and manipulative than I would have expected a fae to be. Maybe she is actually a Seelie fae, just one with a grudge. Point in fact, she willingly admit that she has a grudge, and that Bill cornering the 'rat' might constitute mutual favor. Then the grace of rabbit for the body of the green-elf, straightforward. She didn't claim that she saved our life then we need to repay in the same value; she took what of similar value: a carcass with a blessing.

Isn't that nice, for a fae?

On the subject of magic, like I said earlier it's all sponsored. Though as to weather that sponsor likes it or not, is HIGHLY debatable. Those who raise the dead often have spirits of the damned shackled to their souls for example. And weather those souls like being used as basically a battery is again, debateble.

When the fae said heathen she meant it, greenmen use their power by coaxing it out of fae that they've shackled to them usually with Tattoos. Again, it may just be that fae disliking the situation but, she's bill's boss.

As for the rabbit, that one is something a trick, its fae magic coupled with the focus of a rabbit's heart to represent the speed. In theory this could and probably will be done with various other animals if Bill needs it though again the result is strictly temporary and the bargain fairly minor as all things concerned.

As for Istavaan and Bulger. They're not elves, merely rich humans who employ the fruity mildly scary sons of bitches. The baresti may or may not bea mixture of humans and dwarfs(clagnogs ancestral home?)

That's pretty cool. The mechanics of everything reflects the give and take nature of... well nature. Everything comes from somewhere and nothing is free. The ethics of all this can be debated, but if it's results for the short term you're after, go ahead and take short cuts. Just don't come crying when, at the very least, your land becomes useless.

Maybe the fae can be appeased by planting various legumes? Legumes form nodules that release sugars into the soil, attracting microbes that in turn restore nitrogen to the rhizosphere (the area around the roots). I don't see why they, or some other plant could attract them for some magical reason.

It was the goal pretty much, there maybe ways to appease the fae and other spirits, such as blood for blood like what bill has done with the rabbit. Of course extending this out to other entities....things might get a bit esoteric. Perhaps a spirit of fire in exchange for his powers steals away your heat, leaving you forever cold and always wishing you to be warm, making you use your and it's power more fueling its own nature.

As for tulips, marketing is a bitch like that. Also, a quick heads up, that plant has a purple flower narrow lancolate leaves and is merely a VERY FRAGRANT spice.

to an extent, to get real power no matter what takes a price, barring doing what a greenman/wizard analogue does and straight up bind one to you and even then there is a price.

Of course, making stuff permanent might be possible though it would take a lot of bootlicking and probably Bill giving up an aspect of his humanity/turning towards being something else slightly. Even if its at first something as simple as he can't eat hot food.
    >> farmer fa/tg/uy 11/09/11(Wed)13:16 No.16896351
A few examples of what 'The Fae' may ask for bill to give up.

    >Cannot eat anything not gathered from the wood.
    >cannot partake of hot foods
    > cannot use cold iron
    >has to at least once a week/day/month eat the still beating heart of a creature of the wood.

At first, these things seem pretty petty but, that's really how it should seem

All the same we don't actually know how 'human' nobles really are it might be that people are freely willing to deal with spirits in exchange for power. hell Istavaan might be some sort of monstrous freak and is just good at hiding it.

possibly also creatures like bulletes and what not.
    >> farmer fa/tg/uy 11/09/11(Wed)14:39 No.16896912
    Brainstorming here or a second.

Non humanoid monsters are usually just animals, that dragon? not actually a giant flying lizard that'd be silly it's really an aggressive creature that hides in the crags and rocks, or maybe its a spirit of some sort hard to tell.

things like the shaggy cows are more common than say Ankhegs, though creatures like goblins, ogres and ghosts do exist they're people who've suffered a price they couldn't pay. A danger for anyone dealing with the supernatural

Creatures like the dire beasts are either primitive versions or spiritual beings that have taken the shape of an animal for whatever reason.

Are we going to have to Deal with any animal people? This has been in the back of my head ever since we started this farming adventure.
Things like: Gnolls, Werewolves, Deer minotaurs, Bearmen or anything else like that?

Or does this world not have animal people/conventional monsters- mearly Humans mutated by magic?
    >> Anonymous 11/09/11(Wed)16:21 No.16897786
Saffron makes everything taste better? I thought it was going to magic. I'm cool with this, but in order to use this efficiently, we're going to need a partner in the culinary arts. It's one thing to provide the spice, it's another to make it the must have of the hip (and more importantly: the rich).

Also in the future, I'd suggest teaming up with someone who is willing to make these awful deals with the fae. Bill Johnson, son of John should try to stay as human as possible.

Oh yes again though they most likely are not the result of normal stuff rather they may be spirits themselves like the Fae, or possibly humans who were dealing animal spirits and have slowly begun to lose everything they had as a human becoming more Urcine, Porcine, Ungloid, Bovine etc.

Also, meta human(dwarves, elves, Possibly orcs? and of course humans) are naturally occurring. It won't be uncommon to run into any of them and often in odd things like a dwarvish cook.

Also, thinking Baresti will be a bit like a dwarven homeland or possibly like the rhineland was for the french/germans being rich in resources and something of a border war at all times.

Regarding deals, did we already pay for the emulsion's recipe and the vase? The hot food chilled got me worried.
If so, renege on the deal, or at least allow for maybe a day/week long of trading our temperature taste buds for use of vase. In fact, give her favor of allowing to borrow the ability to eat hot food, even if you don't use the vase. Sorta 'I pity you foo' kinda trade.

It seemed like the way to turn into a fae is by trading deals with fae, sorta like misery loves company. If we plan to be some agroeconomic baron, having the edge of being fae-favored is nice, but turning into a full fae before might be too restrictive.

    - Hot food for usage of vase is fine, it's a bargain, in fact, but needs to be regulated to when we actually USE the vase.
    - No cold iron is a no-no, since I doubt all fae would be so favorable to Bill. And all those good tools we'd miss out on.
    - Trading food from our farm (or cities) with food from the woods are fine, but only occasionally.
    - Regularly eat the still beating hearts of creatures? Actually, this is fine by me.
    My two cents, anons. Yours?
And what favors you'd be willing to let Bill give up?

using those as examples its intended to make it feel like a steady slip of things, again things may get more esoteric at times as well like a fire spirit making it so a man is always cold no matter how much he burns things.

really it's highly variable, really the worst thing that could happen is being turned into something that is less than human, that slippery slope is there for a reason. Bill's gotta be willing to say no to the powers offered to him or say yes and turn his back on being human. The hare's heart was taste really and meant to lure him into relying on the Fae more and more.

Again, all highly speculative I'm worldbuilding as of right now and simply figuring out how to fit pieces together.

Short run down of the Regional players:

Istavaan: A young noble, he's recently taken over the barony by orders of the Grand and holy Emperor. Istavaan comes from a illustrious military background and seeks to quell the issues the Baresti lowlands have Caused the Savaan Empire as of late. Which is why he matters. Istavaan doesn't care how, he simply wants results this includes feeding his armies as well as things like cornering markets to try and starve supply lines. Located with the fortress Gringskald he's probably gonna be showing his mug at somepoint in some way.

Bulger: One of the minor lords under Istavaan, Bulger is what Bill want's to be. he controls the flow of local grains supplies as well as things like the regional spice trade. This is partly due to his cadre of Greenmen which operate his numerous hothouses across the country ensuring year round production of exotic goods for the rich and powerful and also as a way to out compete normal operations which simply can't grow much in the winter. Bulger is reported to be something of a dandy as well and has often been seen in the company of a cadre of young men whom he calls his retainers.

The Order of the Emerald rose: The guys who work with Bulger the emerald rose is the local greenmen. Not nice guys by any means but, people like them well enough if just because they can make the crops flourish. the order also are the ones that have been harvesting local spirits to enslave them as pets and as ways to power their own magic. Again, not nice guys. But, whatcha gonna do?

The order of the Silver chalice: A semi-monastic order of knights. These brave warriors answer to Istavaan and the emperor alone. The Silver chalice from which they take their name is said to have been given to them by an angel sent from the skies on wings of platinum and light. They serve a variety of functions with their lesser members acting as messenger, swords for hire and even relief during times of hardship. The order however is getting ready for war, and it shows they've once more started to fly their banners where a chapter is located and their stronghold is now filled with the sounds of training as they begin to renew their efforts.

The Quansi- the elves of the east, these strange folk appear from time to time bearing trade goods as well as word from the far and distant empires which no man in the land has ever seen. The Quansi often have goods, spirits and other oddities that are simply not found here. Recently a number have been cropping up across the land, possibly trying to earn a little coin in the shadow of war.

So it looks like Bill will have to eliminate Bulger, but Bulger has cadre of Greenmen. Fae hates Greenmen. Bill has no powers, so he'll probably have to lend them from Fae. She'll gladly provide them. If we start killing Greenmen, sooner or later we'll have to deal with the The Order. Probably will have to kill them. Meanwhile, we will be getting more and more powers so that we can stand against such force.

In the end we are severely going to fuck up local order, economy and resource-flow just because SOME ASSHOLE STEPPED ON OUR CROPS!

    Continuing some more.

The Fae/spirits: Though not a whole and united front they are there, damn near everywhere and when brought to bear a force to be reckoned with. The spirits have been taking a hit thanks to the Order of the Emerald rose but, as we've seen they're still a force to be reckoned with if a little unyielding when it comes to working together. Outside of those that reside in the forests there are still lakes and rivers in which powerful beings reside as well as the mountains and surrounding barrows. Though how friendly is hard to tell.

The fallen/monsters: where the spirits tread, the monsters follow. These creatures are the result of magical bargains gone awry, the ghoul, a common creature being just one such issue. The greater the bargain the more fearsome the beast that is born from the man. Though some are mere animals other retain a modicum of their minds, and will drive their kin to villages and other places of possible food. Farms are also a large target though as of late things have been fairly quiet.

The Valnesi: The Val, are a northern people, pale hair and skin they come from a land of ice and cold. Consummated in the art of trade and also the strange act of Skalding they travel here and there offering whatever they can for coin. Valnesi are known to be a hard working people and have no question taking goods and coin from questionable sources so long as it glitters or can be made to.

    Rage is KILLKILLKILLYOUALLTIMEALLDAY I suspect.
But it probably would grant some combat deals, and I suspect easy to get favors from, since it wants to RAGEALLTHETIME.

The problem is this minor deals means that the character is the one who feels them. Tg's hivemind, well, doesn't feel what their character feel. We could order Bill to take all the deals, but probably lose him when the damage from the deals break his mind, turning him into a ghoul-or-worse.

Man, if there are stats, we need to pump Willpower. Eat your cold food, Bill, and no, you can't burn your farm.

Im thinking dwarves may just very well be shorter versions of humans that have a habit of being well dwarvish. They like metal, they like gold, they like beer and they like women. At the same time culture might come into play on this one, perhaps a strange ritual practice and aversion to those who deal with spirits where as the elves seem to be quite happy to take any old ghost and bind them?

Dwarves as dwarves mean that their ancestral worship are great, comparable to elves, even if their lives are a tad shorter compared to those pointy-ears, but their ordered culture makes memorial last longer.

Depending on the culture, they might bind souls to their crafts and considered it great honor to be done so, or the reverse, they might hate the idea of commanding ancestral souls. It's all culture. Even the alcohol. Especially the alcohol.

The anvil and the still, no dwarf actually live without those. At least, socially.
My idea. Kinda kidding and Dwarf Fortress inspired, but feels like it fits the quintessential dwarf.
OP should choose his own dwarf culture though.
