Do you think Lelith Hesperax's actions on the battlefield are broadcast back on Commorragh? Are there dark eldar paparazzi that gossip about her life?
    >> Anonymous 11/26/11(Sat)16:34 No.17028596
It's outright mentioned in the codex that holovids of Lelith's fights are popular in Comorragh and beyond. Succubi are pretty much Dark Eldar equivalents of actresses and pop stars so they probably have lots of paparazzis following them, altough they probably have a lot more risky job than our paparazzis (most pop stars aren't able to kill you in five different ways ebfore you can blink).

Yea, but when the celebrities they're chasing are as vain, arrogant and deadly as your average Succubus, it probably is that dangerous to try chasing them for gossip.

True enough. I mean there's a whole district of the city given over to non-Dark Eldar mercenaries. Your average Commorite port is probably going to have a fairly substantial population of non-Eldar pirates and raiders passing through to barter and trade, let alone more interesting individuals who might be singled out by the high Lords and Ladies as particularly amusing.

I can just imagine an Archon keeping some extremely dangerous human as part of his court, all the while laughing behind his back. "Oh, look. He thinks he's *people*."

Ach, I have none within me.
    Well...

Inquisitor Hunter took a last drag and pitched his lho into the pavement.
That the puddle it hit caught fire didn't impress him.
That the fire was green, and screaming?
He bent over and inhaled ferociously.
The world spun crazily and he dropped to one knee as his cardial implant sped up, it's normally distant wheeze now the rapid thudding of a crazed grox.
    Fuuuuuuuu-ck yes.
He was in the right city.
Hunter pulled his battered plasma pistol, and put a shot into the puddle.
The screaming stopped. The fire became a more traditional, soothing plasma blue. He lit another lho, absently dabbed at the blood dribbling out of the corners of his eyes, and waited on Reeak.
"...fucking COME ON you ghastly quill-brained shit!"
    "Rooooooork."
That was new. Several deep octaves of new.
Reeak struggled sideways through the lander's door, and once clear he elected to hurl his swollen bulk down in a powerful leap rather then chance the bent stairs.
    Hunter grinned.
That Warboss had been two meals for them both, and by the look of it Reeak wasn't done with his yet.
    "Got your shit?"
    "...I does. Do. *krork*"

Towers that stretched dizzily up, studded in lights and spines and titan-scale blades, and even as he watched microscopic seeming dots distantly flailing would be hurled from them and plunge as if under water to their doubtless explosively end.
This was a city where it could take him whole minutes to fall to his death.
    "....yeah."
He'd already discharged an entire roll of picter film, and had reflexively reloaded before he'd noticed he was shooting.
Reeak had lifted his head and was scenting, something like a pleased smirk on the edges of his shear-like beak.
Hunter turned, and spent his last picter charge on Reeak, distantly noting his how subject's bulging muscles were nearly swallowing his formerly lanky frame.

How do the citizens of Commorragh come about such things without personally entering real-space on a raid or something? Like, if you're not in a Kabal or in a Cult what would you use as currency to pay for slaves? This might be a simple question, but I'm fairly new to 40k.

They bring stuff in from raids. Yes, the Dark Eldar raid enough shit that they can support an entire solar-system sized city with it. Like some of the raids have ended in entire planet's populations being taken away.

It's not really gone into. I imagine Commoragh as having a very large, complex barter system. There isn't a single currency, just a trade of goods and services. Individuals will trade whatever they have - whether they've been paid it, or stole it, or claimed it from a dead rival or neighbor, whatever - to get what they want. Large arms manufacturers may have set prices for things - picture related in that regard.

Yea, there's a bit of a misconception that the Dark Eldar raiding is fairly small - a town here, a shipping convoy there, and so on. It's more like a constant war upon realspace, carrying off whole planetary populations to feed Commoragh's hunger.

That said, actually owning or trading slaves is probably something mostly restricted to the upper and middle classes, as they're the ones that the Kabals draw from, and it's the Kabals that launch the majority of raids. Dark Eldar aren't given to sharing, so it's doubtful that the spoils would be doled out to the populace. Most slaves are tortured and killed so their pain and suffering can be collected and consumed (if the Dark Eldar don't do this, they wither away and die). That's why the Wych Cults exist. The huge glatatorial arenas allow the masses of Commoragh to pack in and devour the suffering of the warriors and slaves being maimed and killed before them.

It's pretty amazing to me then, that their entire market is based on slavery and pirating. I know that that is really obvious, but I've never really clued into them not having ANY sort of industry of their own until now.

Aren't more emotional species more fulfilling for the Dark Eldar? This would mean that the Craftworld Eldar or Exodite Eldar would be the most prized prey and Necrons or lower Tyranids the least.

We know Dark Eldar raid Exodites, in Planetstrike some Exodite world managed to repel such a raid but the haemonculi managed to poison the World Spirit before leaving. This somehow (empathic link?) caused every Eldar on the planet to lay down and die in days.

    >Aren't more emotional species more fulfilling for the Dark Eldar?

Probably, yea. But given the size of Commoragh, quantity is better than quality. Eldar and Dark Eldar also work together against mutual enemies - there's certainly a degree of infighting, as you mention - but there's no great fratricidal war between the two.

From the Dark Eldar's perspective, I imagine they just treat other Eldar factions the same way they treat one another. They won't go after other Eldar for the sake of it, but if they have something the Commorites want and can't stop it from being taken from them, too bad. They should have been tougher.

    Money. Money money money.
Hunter scurried, one hand on his plasma gun, and the other on his nuts.
He'd found a corpse about ever couple meters. Some swinging from lumen posts. Some slumped against walls in the universal boneless posture of the recently dead. Some smeared in pink and crimson ribbons across the streets.
    All naked.
And all with the genitals gouged out.
Hunter gave The God-Emperor a lot over the years.
But fuck the entire warp, and Cadia too for kicks, if he was losing his balls over this bullshit -dead OR alive.
Above, below, around him the city breathed in whispers and gasps and throaty giggles and high, mocking, triumphant laughter. Strange, nerve-scraping music came in fading moans to him, hollowed by it's chaotic reverberations along the alley walls.
The actual thoroughfares were no option. He'd strode confidently down one, head up, fearlessly like a righteous servant of the Emperor, the kind he'd learned to imitate at least, did.
Fuck this city, it didn't -he ducked a pair of dangling feet, and something hurled him facedown into the street.
Even as he was smashed down, Hunter was already curling into a ball -his hive-honed survival skills screaming for him to look hurt, look helpless, give Reeak time to set up a flank.
He tore at his coat, seized his Sunburn pistol, pulled frantically as it got snagged-
    "Mon-keigh."
Hunter froze. That voice. The supremacy in that voice. The unquestioning superiority of it's speaker. He clicked on his voxcorder.
"Mon-keigh. You terror is sweet, Mon-Keigh. How far do you think you'll get, if we let you run?"
Hunter rolled over, and finally beheld the being addressing him.
He hissed out a curse from behind clenched teeth.
    "Hellions."

Well, I suppose what I was getting at is that any sort of Commorragh based industry would just be powered by slaves, so the DE themselves, (slaves excluded), wouldn't have to do any of the grunt work. Aside from weapons manufacturing they don't really work towards any sort of industry is what I meant.

Am I wrong in that assumption?

Probably. Most industry is carried out by slaves...but that doesn't mean those slaves aren't other Dark Eldar. It's mentioned that being reduced to a factory slave is one of the worst punishments for a Dark Eldar, as the repetitive and monotonous work deprives them of any extreme emotion and sensation. A fair degree of Commorite industry will be carried out by Dark Eldar - just not willingly.
