As of last thread our Patriarch just offered us a position at the top of the food-chain, the next Patriarch of the Clan.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/11(Wed)10:11 No.17213008
In other words, we're fucked in every conceivable way, the only question is how hard we get screwed.

All of which is governed by factors well beyond our control.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/11(Wed)10:17 No.17213036
    >>17213008

This is accurate, but needs to be elaborated on.

For reasons posted in the last thread (Which I will repost here for posterity) we can't take the position. It ruins EVERYTHING to the degree that we might as well call the game here.

Flip side of that same coin: If we don't take it, we might shame our clan and/or branch, and get the boot. Inari's not the most rational person in the world, and she's a wild-card more than likely responsible for this development. Then there's the fact that the patriarch might not want us to lead as much as he DOSEN'T want our brother to lead. Which means that by refusing, on top of everything else, might be a death sentence for our bro.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/11(Wed)10:19 No.17213051
    Reasons NOT to accept include:
First, it completely fucks our brother.
Second, It locks us into the Hyuga line. This means no shot at being the Hokage, and CERTAINLY no Harem ending.
Third, fucking our brother would reveal the dark side to our movements and ambitions. The very thing all of our plans hinge on staying hidden.
Fourth, if the shit we're planning on pulling in the near future goes south, we're minimizing damage. Whole clan goes with if we fuck up as boss, but if it's just us? Better for everyone. Plus the glory would be that much greater.
Fifth, Leader is expected to stay and lead. Meaning we don't get to go hopping across country anymore.
Sixth, we don't want to screw our family like that. Our Older sister and brother are easily as strong as we are apiece, and they might well decide to off us.
Seventh, Inari. Not happening with her. This is worth a separate point of listing besides the Harem ending just because of how kwayzee she is.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/11(Wed)10:21 No.17213064
    >>17213051
Eighth, we have to marry Hyuga. Damn near everything we've been doing thus far has been with the distant goal of getting ourselves, and our children, the fuck out of that viper's nest.
Nineth, A position of power like that implies a bias. We can still pretend to be impartial where we are now, which is critical to our schemes.
Tenth, fuck the Hyuga. Fuck them, fuck their seals, fuck the houses, and everybody who thinks that shit's a good idea. You know what becoming the Hokage and having kids would do? Put Byakugan wielders firmly beyond the reach of all that clan bullshit. without that insane monopoly going for them, that clan falls the fuck apart within 3 generations. 4 tops.

Seriously. Even the fucking UCHIHA aren't that insane when it comes to guarding their secrets and power.

The Uchiha, where a power boost means murdering and cannibalizing your friends and family.

When you make the Uchiha look sane by comparison, you have fucked up.

And that's just ten reasons. I got a lot more. For now though, stall for time. Everything hinges on how much info we can dig up before we have to decide.

Welcome to real life: The simulation!

I think it's not really how MUCH we're fucked as it is in what way we get fucked. If we accept, our family hate us but we get our power and influence expanded greatly. If we refuse, we might get our family killed, and we lose this opportunity.

Also, IRC is shown to increase virility. You should use IRC more, even if it's just the Java client on the suptg site. Mmm.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/11(Wed)10:23 No.17213078
So yeah. Fucked is pretty accurate. We're getting reamed hard unless we can pull a miracle out of our ass.

And even then, we run the risk of that coming back to bite us somehow.

Ironically, we might actually be fucked because we were doing so well.
    >> Mooglepies 12/14/11(Wed)10:25 No.17213087
    >>17213064
And yes, we need to stall. I'm not really decided one way or the other what we should do yet, but I do think we need lots more information.

For a start, WHY does the patriarch not like Kumo? It can't be because he's from a low ranking Branch family, otherwise he wouldn't have dropped this bomb on us.

Captcha: Hero Bricklayers. Yeah, I'm a hero and currently I am squatting, laying bricks, That's correct.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/11(Wed)10:26 No.17213095
    >>17213065

With the exception of getting family members killed (maybe) the worst thing we could do is except. It ruins our chance at absolutely anything higher than that position, at the head of a family who's clutches we're trying to escape.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/11(Wed)10:30 No.17213125
    >>17213087

Possible alternatives: setting up our sister who might hate us. Sounds bad, yes, but works best in the middle distance, and hopefully won't matter in the end-game.

Having the Patriarch killed before he could fuck us and/or our brother. These are tricky and dangerous waters, and we should think carefully before going down that road. Though it would be deliciously ironic to be a Hyuga performing a political assassination to avoid promotion.

Thirdly, try and convince the Patriarch that we're of much greater value to the clan as a disposable/deniable asset.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/11(Wed)12:14 No.17213715
So it seems that we will try to stall for time, and try to get out of this.
Should we talk to our father on how to get out of this predicament?
    >> Anonymous 12/14/11(Wed)13:43 No.17214319
"Forgive me, I need time to think on this. After all, you will not die for some time and so my brother may marry your daughter without him becoming the Patriarch." Bow our heands and smile. Let our 4 Diplomacy just roll off of us.

For the next while, we focus on training with the Patriarch as much as we can, to learn everything about him and from him. After all, when he dies, we won't be able to learn from him.

And we need to plan how we're going to kill him. We can't do pressure points. Posion might be nice, as would an accident. We, however, can not let anyone know about this.

    >> Anonymous 12/14/11(Wed)17:10 No.17216140
As was stated before we need to understand why he chose us over anyone in the other higher houses than where we were born and we need to understand what his reservations about our brother are. I have a feeling he's less worried about him and more worried about Ran but that's just a baseless hunch.

There is also the possibility that this is a desperation play because he fears for his life once our brother becomes the heir as opposed to any worries about the clan's future.

Ask him why he's giving us the option instead of just comanding it to be so.
Then try and pry some more info about the situation from him.
Then ask for some time to consider it, even though I wouldn't be surprised if he denied us that. He may want this decided before the wedding.

He looks at you and explains, "Shingen, everyone can see you're a genius. You will lead the Clan with strength and honor. I do not want your brother for leadership because he's too weak and too attached to Ran. If Ran passes he will be broken and unable to lead properly. I need my successor to be strong." He explains and smiles, "I ask instead of demanding because I want a ruler who wishes to rule, rather than one who was forced into it. As for a delay, before Ran is married to Kumo, I need your answer. If I do not get it, I will terminate the wedding." He says simply.

By, "If I do not Get it" do you mean if you dont get an answer or if I don't say yes?

and surely there is someone in the higher houses more qualified? Or someone with experience in leading? The only squads I have ever led have been composed of my friends and immediate family, not those I have never met.

And would they even agree to follow me? I can't see many in the upper houses willing to let me live long enough to even glance over my shoulder for daggers.

Also. should I become a ruler, who will speak on behalf of our clan to other clans? Some clans believe me, and a new negotiator might be harmful to our relationships. Hard times have come, and only a person who sees all of the situation can help us.

Also, do you really think that if my brother couldn't become the leader I would surely become one? If you will cancel his wedding, you will destroy him as a ruler, destroy him as a man, and will get rid of a potential ruler, the only one you have."

Seems like. That won't do. It won't do 't'all. We accept with conditions.
    1. We are allowed to spend the remaining week with our family as a family.
    2. We will make sure that our father is aware of the situation before we cut ties.
    3. We will keep this info close to our vest so as not to put a damper on our brother's wedding.

    Then if he accepts:
    1. We contact Inari in whatever way we can, she has a body double stalking us somewhere nearby so it should be doable.
    2. We tell her the situation, and request she kill the Patriarch for pulling this shit and so that we don't get stuck in his position.
    3. We make it clear that killing our brother is unacceptable in every way.

My lord, I will be honest. I don't want this position. at all. If you try to force me into it, you can be damned sure it won't turn out well.

My brother is one of the few people I actually trust, within this clan and outside of it. That means I place a high value on his well being. anull the marriage and you will crush him, both emotionally and psychologically. And then, one of your primary choices for this position has a good reason to see you dead, and commit the deed himself.

I will not be bullied into this. Period.

    >> Anonymous 12/14/11(Wed)17:43 No.17216460
Shit I just realized something. If we accept we will have our seal protected and then learn the seal commands for others in the clan. That's huge. It's been one of our biggest fears, but if we're adopted and then get trained properly we'll not have to worry about it in the future. Then after learning that we can step down after the Patriarch dies and leave rule to our brother. We'll be treated like shit and there will be attempts on our life but we'll get a huge boon for the risk.

"So, turns out the leader of this fucked up clan's a massive Asshole. Like Holy Shit."

God, this is fucked up. The only reason he wants us to lead is because we're so damn good.

    Which we've been lieing about.

Well, let's try this one out: "It seems to me that everything I've accomplished for the clan was because of my social placement. As a member of the eighth house I'm both expendable and a deniable asset. It's what I'm best suited for. Within the strictures of the Clan, it's simply where I belong. I understand your desire to leave the Clan in good hands, your obligated to the same way we all are to help the clan. If you order me to, I can hardly refuse. If you're asking me to instead of telling me, that can only mean you value my input and respect my opinions. As he sees you return Father bids you closer and pulls a cushion up for you to sit with the two of them. He want's to do this because after the marriage Kumo would be next in line, and for some reason he's convinced he wouldn't make a good leader. To the point where he said he'd call off the wedding if I refused."

Deep breath. "What he's unaware of is the fact that I would make a terrible leader, for many reasons. Not the least of which is that if I were in a predictable a place as the Patriarch I'd be dead within a week, Kumo would then still be next in line, and the whole point to me joining the main branch goes out the window. So now he's put me in the position of having to choose between crushing my brother's dreams and potentially destroying our Clan. You guys do realize if we don't live up to Inari's expectations of being a hero she will kill us right? She is not mentally stable and has dedicated the last three hellish years of her life to making it so we are in a position to do some good.

We're still specced out ok for direct control if we have to. For now though let's try and take advantage of this situation. We're being pushed into a harsh position but it does have its benefits. After we're bumped to main house it's not like we'll have to start ruling right away, as the patriarch probably hopes to live for quite some time. We may even convince him to let us wander as we have been, seeing as that decreases the likeliness of us killing him in his sleep.

Apparently, we are used by someone (maybe even Inari) as a celebrity, a hero, and our puppeteer doesn't want us to disappear.
And, we seem to be involved in some kind of plan, that is going behind our backs. In this case, we are not chess masters at all - minions at best.

Assuming we CAN respond "Newfound desire? I'm a Ninja. That's literally my job. And I'm a Hyuga, where if you can't master double-talk and manipulation shortly after birth you're murdered in your crib to try and gain political advantage. the point isn't hiding, the point is my plans succeeding. Being a public, heroic figure is currently causing everything to go up in flames. I'm going to have to abandon that approach in the short term, because I can't lead the Hyuga. if you can't understand my motives for wanting to operate discreetly, then you're missing the point of why I'm doing this in the first place. Righting wrongs, saving the damsel in distress, protecting those i care about. noble goals, that the heroic persona I've been projecting has been failing at. Not quite. We are a celebrity because of our actions amongst the Senju (and 'killing' the Hyuga hunter).

Inari has been setting us up for this stuff this whole time, there's probably a lot more that's going to fall into our lap, and it'll likely be covered in blood and senbons.

The Patriarch is using us because having us as the next head gives him a greater chance of living to see his next decade. Every house above 8 will be offended by the mere notion of us being in charge, thus all efforts will be on getting rid of us before they get rid of him. Additionally we travel -a lot- so we're more likely to be out and about and less likely to plot killing him to get his position of power early.

We're still forging the ties and bonds necessary to be a chess master. That's why being selected as ambassador was such a good thing, it gave us room to find more allies. If we want to be the chess master we'll need to take the play the patriarch made and play it to our favor.

    A. Go missing-nin
    B. Fake our death
    C. Just get out of the camp.

A and B are the hardest choices: they are nearly impossible to perform and quite drastic.
C is unlikely too, but we have to choose somebody.

I'd always thought he was just making amends for a botched act of passion from three years ago. We currently have no way to read what Inari's plans are, nor have we ever had a plan. Right now, I think Shingen just needs to focus on doing what he's always done and not force the issue with Inari. That seems on track to bring itself to its own head. But we could disappear, right now, and no-one would be the wiser. With our healing skills we could help people, and never want for anything. Ok more important question. What the hell will we gain by "dying"? We'll be free of the Hyuga clan. We'll also lose everything we've worked for up until now. Our relationship with the Senju? Gone, "Shingen Hyuga is dead and if he's not then his people must know!" Same for the land of Wind and everyone else that has political clout.

This plan does more harm than good. There is no puppet master pulling the strings, just a very damaged and dangerous girl enacting her crazy plots and fallout from those plots and our own actions.

    Consensus moves to yes.

You awaken the next morning to find the needles all laying about you in disarray as your body rejected them. You put them away quietly and go to the Patriarch.

He's overjoyed at your acceptance and offers you a scroll which will allow your Father to disown you, and then puts his hand on your shoulder and smiles, "Shingen, you are making the right choice. For the good of the Clan."

"I'm pleased you agree." He says with a smile and tries to play it off as fine, but you see just the faintest twinge of discomfort at your words, curious about exactly what you mean about the future, but he seems to let it pass.

You take the scroll to your Father who reads it, sighs softly and signs his name onto it. Thanking him for this you turn to find Emiko standing there. She's wearing her military outfit with armor on the hips, knees, and over her chest. Her long halberd is in her hand as she's glaring at you with her Byakugan. "Shingen. You are no longer my Brother, and are not yet adopted. I challenge you to a duel." She says, pointing her blade at you with a smile, "The duel is on the grounds of you impugning my honor by refusing to greet me properly as is fitting of my station." She says, clearly using the weakest valid claim she could get her hands on. Your Father whistles lowly and looks at you, "Well, Shingen? You can walk away, if you want." He said and rubbed his nails against shirt as he spoke, "Emiko dear, he has no honor at the moment. He's Clanless and family-less. If he leaves and is adopted he returned his honor." He pauses and then goes on, "However, if he fights you and wins now, that honor will be given to him again, twice over, for defending himself from the Princess of the Eighth House."

You dress yourself and move to ready up for the wedding. The dress attire you wear is pretty much uniform with the other men in the Clan. Jako wears a large black yukata with white lining that does its best to look classy, as he sits beside you and watches the ceremony.

The event passes with just a single hitch, thankfully. Everyone's overjoyed for Ran and Kumo and passes their best wishes to them. The Patriarch stands up after the ceremony and announces your official adoption. Things get tense as everyone claps, Ran's face cryptic as Kumo is just thankful that you did this for him.

The Patriarch then says that, in a week's time, he will be stepping down from his position as Clan's leader and will be going into a position on the ruling council for the Lord of the Land of Fire.

Burning all of our contacts and everything we've done in the quest/for the last 3 years at this point is just a dumb idea. I'm fine with us abdicating but we don't have to commit suicide to do it.

I think it plays better for our character (as other people see it) if we turn down power because we didn't want it.

Agreed. That plan is unnecessary and excessive. Shingen milks the Hyuuga archives for everything they're worth, the Patriarch promotes Shingen and steps down, Shingen learns all he can before promoting his brother and steps down himself.

Shingen helps his brother live the dream.
Shingen becomes more powerful with his expanded knowledge.
Shingen throws an "up yours" at the Patriarch.
Shingen maintains all his contacts and reputation.
Shingen is free to handle his bidness.

Sounds like a plan to me.

    Wow guys.

Faking our death? Enticing Inari to fake it for us? Jeebus.

All we have to do is, become Patriach. Boost our sister and father to the main house and then establish that women can become patriachs/matriarchs and then make our sister the newest leader. She is after all a genius, with a technique that frightens even our father.

Or something. I'd have a better plan but right now. Wow, still in shock that we tried to go off the grid.

Hey, since we're going to be head honcho anyway- Could we, after removing our cursed seal, do the same to the entire branch and abolish the cursed seal system? Or if we wanted to abuse legal loopholes, we could simply promote all branch members to pale champion status. Taking care of the cursed seal stuff is nothing but pros for us:
We get to free our oppressed brothers and sisters, we get to stick it to the patriarch and most importantly, Inari's potential grip over the branch and ourselves vanishes.

Three problems with that plan: Women can already be in charge, that was the plan if we didn't accept: prevent our brother from marring his daughter, his daughter rules alone.

Our sister hates us. Assuming she didn't take it as a personal insult, she might try to fuck us over with her new found authority.

Lastly, randomly boosting various family members will make us look dumb and indecisive.

We already have a plan, lets stick to it.

But I if i have to be the Patriarch even briefly, I intend to do my job well. The reason I was chosen to fill the throne is because there were some... concerns. Personally, I think that a good way to deal with those concerns is by giving Emiko an advisory position in addition to her current titles and duties. if there's one thing she isn't, it's soft and emotional. The fact that she tried to kill me under the pretext of a duel on the day of your wedding is proof enough there. Just don't tell her it was my idea, she'll probably refuse out of spite."

Continue over any sign of shock over the casual reference of attempted fratricide. "Another thing is that the duties I would be returning to had some... admittedly questionable components. It would probably be best if you didn't ask to many questions or try to keep tabs on me. I'm trying not to step on too many toes, but plausible denial never hurts. You can rest assured that I'll try not to abuse clan resources, and be working for the good of our clan and our allies."

Today was the day he promised he would do it, and he jumped ship apparently before the alloted time.

The archives reveal a lot of hatred and disdain towards the Branch Members. You trace it all the way back and the first recorded use of the Curse Seal was to keep the Byakugan safe from outside capture. The seal terminates the wearer's eyes, making them useless. However, eventually, the Main Branch tied a curse onto it which allowed them control and to retrain dominance, since the Branches were warring with one another over the powerful jutsu that were at the center of the Clan's power.
