    50 KB Evil Quest Redux Evil !!rEkSWzi2+mz 01/09/12(Mon)19:34 No.17481243
The Lost Age. An era steeped in mystery, an enigma where the icy hands of time himself tore our past from the throne of knowledge from the Ever-High itself. A time of darkness. All things must posses a balance, an ebb to a flow, a wax to a wane, a darkness to a light, and after a thousand years of nothing but sunlight, the time spent in night with a new moon was long indeed.

Valtir, he who sits upon the Ever-High, The Dawn Sun, the Ever-Shining Star, the Bastion of Good and savior of all life. Even he was once a man, a man who struck down that which stood for all Evil, that which revels in pain and death. Valtir's sacrifice in that final battle lifted him from mortal coil to the seat of God-hood over all, a benevolent lord over all the Earth. However, another man would follow in his footsteps. As long as there are those to see the light there will be that which casts shadows. About him we do not know much, we do not even know how many years ago it was, all we have left are the scars. Five hundred years ago? A thousand? Perhaps many more, but what little we do know tells us that it was him who stood upon the edge of an era, the era created through sacrifice by Valtir and his fellows and allies. This one man, the darkness to Valtir's light, whether by whisper or bellow the world came to halt and for so many years, frightened and scared, ceased to move.

Many scholars disagree about how to interpret what little fragments of knowledge we have while we in vain tie this lost era together. What we do know, is that at the Battle of Angelfalls, that is where none would dare disagree, it was the beginning of the end, and the end of the beginning for Valtir's shadow. The Cold New Moon, The Ever-Aphotic Star.

The Skinny for anyone new: Evil has been dead for 1000 years. In some ruined tower in the northern polar regions you awoke after all that time with no identity. A red stone spoke directly to your mind and told you that you are his last creation the last true evil being in a world where a man turned celestial deity used his powers to seal away all evil. All evil races still alive after that final battle a millennium ago were cursed and could sire no offspring so they slowly faded away. After crushing the stone for having the gall to tell you what to do you left on your journey weak and emaciated. After some adventures you've gained much strength even caused the end of a dynasty among other evil acts. The more evil you commit and cause the stronger you grow. Now the elves are slowly starting to return from across the sea, from their self-imposed exile. Convincing the lords of Angelfalls to fight back and retain their sovereignty and titles, you've been charged with the defence of the city, hopefully pushing the Elves off the continent, at least for a time.

Style: I'll wait some time between my posts before hacking away at the keyboard. Taking in every post with interesting commentary, dialogue or suggested courses of action, so long as they are plausible for my next part of the story. The more there is, the more interesting it is, the more I'll give back.

Before I resume I'll take any questions, if none, I'll begin again.

The last clash having just ended, you lost many of your levy pushing the Elves back out of West Angelfalls, but a weak front in the east meant that they pushed all the way into the noble's district.

Returning the the citadel with great strides in haste you appear back to the table with the maps of the city arrayed and standing around the table Gagné and his lieutenants in deep contemplation with a hint of shock and fatigue.

Your pretense doesn't go unnoticed for long as a few of the lieutenants quickly and almost frightened part to let you into the circle, in fact a whole section of the table is cleared just for you, as if an invisible barrier pushes them away.

"What was that monstrosity?" Says the Duke, the only one with any measure of composure, at least enough to fake its appearance.

"A pet of mine, my good duke, I would indulge you an explanation if we had good time to discuss it. For now you can thank its existence to a great many of dead Elves and what we now have of the east city."

Gagné's face grows grim, "On the other side of the Citadel bridge the elves have pushed to that keep's gates. Even now they're preparing their spells to break it down. If they can pour all their men into that breach and move across the bridge to here... If they capture Lady Hinter, we'll be forced to sign any treaty they thrust upon us. And there is no safer place for her to go. And should she leave now, she will lose the rights to the city over the Elves."

Have OUR people, not the city's garrison who would question it, gather the corpses of elves. And anyone else that has recently died, and store them in the lighthouse.

Position the cannons at strategic locations that can be best defended. Chokepoints, high towers, whichever there are.

Have Kelgris, if he is still in good condition, return to the light house and perch near it to act as a final guard. If needed we can redirect him to points where Elves break through the defensive lines.

The plan here is to keep things status quo until we can power the lighthouse.

Duke Gagné continues,"We'll have to shore up against the impending breach, perhaps if we can push them far enough back after the initial wave, we may be able to make some barricade and deter a future assault."

"You do so Gagné, I will need only a small cadre of men, the levies for manual labor will do."

The Duke looks up again with an inquisitive look, "What is it you're-"

"Again Duke, I do not have the time to explain, you hold that position the best you can." With a quick about face on your heels and flourish of your cloak you march away giving a quick order to gather up men well and not injured enough to lift bodies.

Returning to the Lighthouse, as you march across the bridge lined with the few canons you have, you look down upon the burning city, half of it, the east side, torched and burning, the sun beginning to be blotted out from the sky. Heading up the tower, away from the main gate you reach the Lighthouse chamber, a room decorated with the small light blue and clear crystals around the room, arranged and connected by a magical signed carved into the floor.

You stand alone for sometime until finally emerging through the door, a line of men wearing masks, to spare them from the stench, bring in body after body into the room. You order them to arrange them and pile them around the main huge crystal in the center of the room, and after hours a pile meters high accumulates, flies buzzing incessantly around the room. The men still working swatting them away, they don't even approach you.

"S-sir?" One of the levy sergeants implores nervously.

With a stern command, tinged with a hint of excitement you cannot hide you order him and his men, "Leave, now, all of you."

You climb the pile of bodies till you reach a makeshift throne high above them, and resting your chin on your right hand braced on your right knee you wait and look at the door.

The sound of magic and battle gets closer and closer, you can feel the rumbles through the stone, but with no window to the outside, you are trapped in this tomb you've made of dozens upon dozens of bodies.

The march of boots, and plate rubbing against plate and the clatter of weapons grows ever nearer as you sit and wait, looking at the door to the chamber. Finally, the white plumed Elven helms appear above the stone steppes and in perfect discipline, even when almost retching the front ranks of the vanguard continue until they reach the room and then fan out in a semi-circle before you. The semi-circle gives way for one more ornately dressed soldier among them.

He takes several seconds to push the feelings of disgust and hatred for the corpse piles. When he finally gains his professional composure he begins with a mocking pleasantry addressing you. “General? I presume. This keep is now under our control. I suggest you surrender and your trail will be swift and even for your crimes against Elven kind, it will be merciful.”

Raising both your hands above your hand you move them to a universal sign of surrender. As the front ranks take their first steps forward you interrupt them, "No. I think not." You slam your palms down onto the bodies you sit upon and a massive flare of negative energy begins to pour out. Everything you have, you put it into the bodies surrounding you.

Gritting your teeth and with labored breathing you begin to build up to a steady and ever increasing yell of effort as black smokey tendrils of energy pour from your hands, your shoulders and you back, like some wicked spider with all appendages crawling out over the bodies.

Soon another misty substance gathers as, light blue in color is rises and bunches together and begins swirling round and round the room, pushed and repulsed by the black tendrils. A low hum from the crystals as the presence of this new energy excites them and the turn from rums to a dull chime that resounds inside the skull. To each crystal the blue mist is pulled, especially to the large one just behind you.

The magic sigils and lines etched into the stone floor illuminate next, and the sound of stone upon stone rumbles, like clockwork, the stone walls around you shift, actually, they are stone gears as like a flower unfurling its petals the tower chamber opens to the outside, the firestorm fanned winds of the city below rush almost drowning out the creaks, cracks, grinding and chiming.

After not even a minute you've spent yourself, and the black tendrils retreat into your core, and the mists that was brought up are trapped in crystals. The Elves pulling back as they struggle to not plummet from the sudden opening of the chamber to the outside, some failing and falling to their doom far below the cliff and waterfall the keep is built on.

Heaving with heavy breathes, you look back up a wicked smile you cannot wipe off your face.

"Your time here ended long ago, Elves. You will find no home here, no friends to welcome you. Return to your exile, enjoy it while you can. Even there you will not be safe from me forever."

Above the large center crystal a glowing white sphere of light has appeared, and one by one the small crystals around the edge form a line of light to it and feed it, slowly causing it to grow in size until it reaches a point where the ever increasing sphere begins to flicker and crackle, like it cannot contain itself any longer.

With a wave of your hand, to your will, the stone cracks and groans as the sigils and lines etched on the ground move and align, in one direction, the Angelfalls dam. The sphere collapses into nothing, and then without a sound a beam of terrible light shoots forth and slams into the river below, and the beam continues right through the stone dam and into the city below where upon meeting the earth it leaves behind a dome of white light. Then late comes the ear piercing screech. The part of the dam the light passed through, the stones around the wound explode and the dome down below explodes as well, vaporizing a large swatch of the city and leaving behind a vast crater as the dome expands quickly outwards in all directions like an exploding sphere.

And the Angelfalls damn breaks quickly, and the river reservoir behind the citadel surges forth and crashes down onto the city below, bursting over the sides of the canal and washing away a huge section of the city. In the harbor below, a massive wave of water tips over the Elven fleet and splinters into pieces and pushes the remains out into the sea.

The Elven invasion force and fleet are in ruins, as is the City of Angelfalls.

Why don't we try to blame the elves for this atrocity?

They had a super weapon in that tower, you found it and tried to use it against them when they got the upper hand. The ensuing power struggle made the weapon go off and destroy the damn.

Then, you can rebuild the city in your own image. No need to cut and run just yet methinks.

With much of the city underwater and washed away into the sea and with the Great Lift inoperable the cost of Angelfalls' freedom from Elvish control is secure. News of failure from what few Elven survivors are left may make their way back home eventually, but any retaliation could take years.

The city itself is crippled, and the population of the city slowly trickles back in from upriver where they fled. The lamentations in the streets of what is left of the city is loud and prevalent.

With the panoply of war being removed from the throne of Angelfalls it has been returned to its previous noble splendor, but the nobles, knights and rich merchants (many of whom lost their fortunes) do not show any celebration of their victory. While it was decisive, it came at a great cost.

One of the nobles raises his voice, "It was the Lighthouse. Somehow it activated and destroyed the dam!"

One of the portly merchants speaks interjects, "I've lost all my wealth in goods within this city, 60%, 60% of my wealth gone! I would have been better under Elven rule. Who will compensate me for my loss!"

"Your loss means nothing, come winter the people of the city will die of exposure, starvation and rot the streets with their dead!"

"How did the Lighthouse fire? Who is responsible!"

The Duke sitting on his throne sits rubbing his temples, in the throne next to him, Catharine, the official ruler of the city for now sits and says nothing, also overwhelmed by the protests.

    ...

Finally the Duke speaks up, "Gentlemen! First and foremost, we have claimed our independence, surely our liege of Telreinz will use the Royal coffers to rebuild."

Another noble raises his voice, "And where was he during the Elven occupation?"

The Duke shuts him down quickly, "With the treaties he could not have intervened, there could have been no just cause. We will petition for the rebuilding efforts and rebuild the dam and then the city. That will allow us to use the Great Lift again and reopen the trade lane. For now though, we need stability. For that I propose before the audience gathered here, a new start for the city. I here will offer a union of the Gagné and Hinter family. That should forever more unify the old treaty to the current nobility ties of the time."
