    931 KB Transpace Guard Quest B5: Bootleg OP !!Cuw+lR6NxOH 01/28/12(Sat)02:16 No.17704904
On a level of reality just below our own, the Crossover began. A thousand walls between fiction and the Metaworld tore open, releasing the hungry forces of Sue from their cannibalized homes. Metaworld itself- connection between Fiction and Reality, and the result of seven billion human's perception of Reality, was nearly rent apart.

In the aftermath, with millions dead and cities flattened, the Rifts existed still. The group that had managed the feat of slaying the Sues stepped forward to defend these gates between Meta and Fiction. They knew that the only way to restore stability was to keep to the Canon, as thousands of Meta inhabitants disappeared into the worlds of Fiction, intent on their own agendas.

    The name of these guardians?

    The Transpace Guard.

There are millions of millions of Canons out there. From video games, to books, to movies, to movies, traditional games, and more. The goal of the Transpace Guard is to ensure that nobody fucks with the story, and that Canon is preserved, so that the Metaverse remains stable, and no great castastrophe happens again.

Even now, valiant heroes fight to restore stability, from countless bad fanfictions, disastrous crossovers, hostile entities in the Meta, and author-self-inserts known as S.U.E.s.
But they cannot do this with strength of will alone.

Men need weapons to fight. Ships to traverse the meta. Troops to fight with. And they always need more money.
    That's where you come in.

You are working with the Transpace Guard's Requisitions division, your job is to Loot worlds of any useful items.

    Looting has two jobs.
#1: Don't fuck up the canon.
#2: Grab everything you can without violating #1.

The Transpace Guard keeps a list of worlds. Sometimes, you can't get what you need by farming or manufacturing.
It's the Looters' jobs to get Staff, unique Items, interesting Technology, Blueprints, and anything that looks like it'd be tricky to make, but easy to grab.

Looters' casualty rates are second only to Storage, because they go into worlds knowing well what they do will break the Law. but as long as it does not break the Canon, then all is well.

Looters are also paid extremely well*. Well, if they're good at their jobs.
Looters have a budget with which to Rent items, troops, and heroes.
Looters then receive Dosh as a reward for turning in their loot.
Get a lot of loot, then you get a lot of Dosh, you pay the Rent, and keep the rest for yourselves.

You, the players, are a small crew of Looters.
You have a small ship, a small amount of funds, and a very small amount of trust from HQ.
But, since small ships are cheap and SOMETIMES Looters distinguish themselves, there are thousands of new looter teams every month sent out. And of the 20 or so that come back, over 4.99% of them become rich and famous.

You just completed a world, and are returning to base.

HUSH. Don't give the real Meta OP Ideas when he reads this!
In all honesty, it'd be like having a human try to hand-build a SUE-tech Giga Buster Oberon, Last Strike of the Ancients. Sure, you could try, but it'd fizzle out due to the sheer nature-difference between the user and the intended tool. The SUEper Reality Emitter, likely a brainchild of an Editor Sue, would likely fall apart into gizmos and incomprehensible electronics when activated. Still, that doesn't mean it doesn't fall apart silently... (read: SUE-splosion of dissapointment, anger, and reality-warping SUE-force)

Let me repeat from the codex.

HOW NOT TO PLAY THIS GAME

Players kill the Sue in one session after exploring approximately 3% of the world.
    Players side with the Sue.
Players openly reveal themselves, and rally the forces of the world to exile the Sue
Players openly reveal themselves, and convince the world to ally with the Sue
Players openly reveal themselves, try to seduce/bar fight with the major characters, and ignore the Sue
Players defeat the Sue, and declare themselves the new Sues of the world.
Players get curbstomped by the Sue and die
Players are fucking morons and require constant babysitting to prevent their reveal and/or curbstomp.
Players stealthily try to raise the militarisation or tech level of the world, rather than try to combat the Sue directly.
Players fanboy/fangirl over the fictional world, and the session devolves into fanboy arguing and/or fetish shit. At this point, No players, You are the Sue.

HIGH Priority of things to loot:
    #1: Xen Crystal
Used to spark teleportation between Xen and Earth, this item is useful for some of Requisitions' transport devices.
    #2: High-ranking Scientists
Many Black Mesa Scientists died during the alien teleportation, army cleanup, or nuclear explosion. They have useful knowledge. Get them for us.
    #3: Military Assassins
Highly trained military troops are valuable.
    #4: Vortigaunts
Considerably more rare than a regular human scientist or soldier, these sentient electricity-and-life-wielding creatures are of use to us.
    #5: Gonarch
In this Canon, the Gonarch never died. Its ability to produce Headcrabs would be useful to us.
    #6: Gargantua
20 foot tall creatures impervious to bullets. They will be useful to us.

MEDIUM priority of things to loot:
    #1: Bee guns
We can't make these, and they're hard to farm. Grab some for us.
    #2: Regular Scientists
    'Nuff said
#3: Regular army troops and security guards
    More staff are always good.
#4: Any other creatures you encounter
While Vortigaunts and Gargantuas are the most useful, any new specimen could potentially have use to us.
    #5: Gluon Gun
Though we are able to produce these items, it is an expensive process. It is typically cheaper to acquire them on the field.
#6: And of course, anything else that isn't nailed down.

    OPTIONAL OBJECTIVE:
#1. Talk to the G-man. Find out what he's up to.

    Things I think we need:
    Good Transportation (like teleporting)
Capturing tools (we need to take things that are actively hostile to us, and capture them safely for requisitions)
Stealth (we don't want open fighting really, we just want to nab stuff and stow it)
Healing Magic (we aren't going to succeed at every stealth or capture roll, and we want to be able to undo damage taken, or given to captured specimens)

A D&D mage or rogue with a wand of Hold Person and a wand of Hold Monster would help us capture things, as could a FF Tactics Thief (steal heart). FFT Thieves are cheap, too, so we get multiple attempts. Won't work on monsters, possibly, and need opposite gender of the target.
What other suggestions can we come up with for capture type powers and tools?

The Stun Bomber does what you'd expect. It's a grenade launcher that fires knockout grenades.
The Cloak and dagger allows permanent invisibility under the conditions: Stationary, Dry, Not on fire. It also allows you to move slowly and remain invisible, and you can move quickly with it for a short time.
The Teleport support can transport objects up to the size and weight of a Transport aircraft or an Abrams tank, and works even underground or in an anti-magic field.
The Alien Containment unit contains aliens. They do not break free.

Here's some capturing weapons that I've thought of:

Stunsticks/stunstaves (Battletech canon) - Delivers an electrical pulse to targets it hits. Used by many police forces in the Inner Sphere to temporarily paralyze or subdue unruly citizens. Leaves no lasting harm, very hard to kill people with it.

Sonic Stunner (Battletech canon) - fires an ultra-high frequency soundwave to stun/incapacitate targets. Can cause hearing loss. Units that have sufficient sound filtering or that can't hear or that don't have ears are unaffected.

Hack Tool (Bioshock 2) - can fire darts that can remotely hack robots and devices. Remote hack darts have to be done manually (i.e. dice roll), automatic hack darts are an auto-success. Can also deploy mini-turrets with a machinegun. 9 manual-hack remote darts per clip, 6 auto-hack darts per clip, 4 mini-turrets per clip.

3 or so elementals (or other appropriate battle armor) should be enough to do heavy lifting. They're also immune to 3059-era small arms fire, which probably translates into virtual immunity from infantry lacking heavy anti-tank weaponry in this era.

If Elementals are too expensive, there are also a handful of non-combat & atmospherically sealed exoskeletons that are used for moving heavy rubble and various debris for disaster recovery efforts. They're also somewhat thin-skinned, being non-combat armor. How much would these cost, OP?

Ghosts are naturally trained infiltrators and assasins. They also have training in hacking security systems, databases, etc. In such a technology-heavy place as Black Mesa, this may come in handy. They may also have EMP rounds, or lockdown rounds to deal with mechanical opponents.

Dark templar may be worth considering because of their permanent cloaking, devastating warp-blades, and generally a lot of experience fighting futuristic human forces and mutation-prone alien abominations. They would be heavy scouts and could also agilely fight with alien forces as they use stunning weaponry to disable them.

    >"find thing, snatch thing with a teleporter, repeat" myself,
That seems like a valid plan.

    A primer on TMAR:
TMAR stands for "Techno-magical ammo regeneration". Typically less expensive than ammo for long missions, the cost of attaching it to a gun depends on both the weight of the projectile and the kinetic energy.
TMAR units can be overloaded - greatly increasing their rate of fire for 3 seconds - but overheating the weapon and running the risk of damaging the user.

    For instance:
a TMAR Devastator fires 40x46mm grenades at a rate of 180 rounds per minute.
a TMAR Stun gun fires an 8-meter-blast-radius stun grenade at a rate of 90 rounds per minute.
You do not need to reload either.

What about gordon freeman or adrian sheppard?
Both would have experience with black mesa, sheppard might be cheaper as gordon is in canon after the black mesa incident.

What about recruiting the native versions as our first prioroty when we arrive, and using them as free heroes?

Spectres and Ghosts are both 25 DOSH.
The Spectre has permanent cloaking, but cannot snipe, cannot EMP, and has a crappier gun by default.

    >What about gordon freeman or adrian sheppard?
Gordon is 70 DOSH, and comes with his HEV suit, Gravity gun, and Crowbar.
Adrian is 40 DOSH, and comes with his Armor, and a Shotgun.

You believe that as long as a canon native does not:
    A. Die, or
    B. Have their personality changed, or
    C. Learn about the meta,
then the reality distortions will be contained, and lower over time.

    I'm liking this one.

I would consider leaving the nanny-bags aside, as I mainly wanted them for conserving our own troops.
With a single hero, if he bites the dust, there won't be anyone to put his / her head into a bag.

Maybe instead get a quickly regenerating shield?

If one of our captured targets dies mid-attempt, it sucks, but it isn't a game ender.

    15 Containment
    7 Stun bomb
3 C&D (The ghost says that he would rather have a Moebius reactor, which is the same price)

One final thing, as I should have been in bed an hour and a half ago:

Make sure our final loadout includes as many free restraining items as we can feasibly use:
Rope, handcuffs, weighted nets... If we need to spend one or two points to get some decent ones, that may be good. Something to help restrain between stunning and getting them teleported into alien containment.

You have a STUN BOMBER and an ALIEN CONTAINMENT UNIT. You may take ropes and handcuffs with you if you wish, however, it has been proven that being STUNNED TO UNCONSCIOUSNESS THEN THROWN IN A SECURE HOLDING CELL is already more secure than HANDCUFFS

Do the heroes have to take loot outside for beaming up, or can they just send anything from anywhere as long as they have line of sight from a hero?

do we have sensors capable of finding all the rooms etc in black mesa well enough to teleport a hero down to designate an object for teleport, then beam them back out to repeat?

    To at least one troop.
You define it by sending data from your visor or head monitor or looking device, and the Ship's transporter can target via that.
If it would fit in the teleporter, it would take approximately 5 seconds to transport a room's worth of guns, with a cooldown of 30 seconds between each teleport.

The costs of things involved made getting more members unfeasible.

There are a few items we absolutely need, like the containment unit and heavy teleport support.
The cost of an additional stun bomber plus stealth gear is 10 per troop, so the more troops we field with this gear, the more we need to spend on gear as well. We had 25 left with the basics and a single Ghost, and that gave us enough to at least get a second ghost in case the first bites the dust.

My original list called for a group of 4 with 2 stun bombers, and each having cloaking gear. We had enough points for each of those troops to be worth about 6 DOSH, which means bottom of the barrel troops.

I think the current list is as good as we're going to get, though if you want to work on an alternate list, that's cool. Maybe try a different set of tools or methods.

The only other method I can think of would be to have some really really good magical detection. Scrying tools, plus two or three dedicated finders, and then just rely on the heavy teleport to bring things into the ship. Have to have at least one stunner still, since it will take 30 seconds to recharge the teleporter and move them into containment. Also poses significant risk in teleporting still-conscious targets onto the ship (or else teleporting soft squishy wizards down to stun things).

    15 Power shield
    15 Containment Unit
    7 Stun bomb
    3 Moebius reactor

    8 HRV
    2 Omni-tool

This is the list I'm voting for.

Focuses on getting a stealth based troop to targets, and protecting them with some heavy defense gear (the power shield, which recharges quickly).

I'm opting for the two ghosts now instead of spectre(s) for these reasons:
We are making short trips to find stuff and teleport back with. There should be plenty of opportunities for the ghosts to rest and recharge their energy.
Lockdown and EMP blast means that they have a good (and fast) answer to turrets or mechanical defenses in place at the base.

I'm not the poster who provided the list. But...

Black-ops troopers are practically non-psychic Terran ghosts for all intents and purposes. Their cloak could prove very problematic for us if the HRV doesn't detect heat signatures or such. What we do is highly situational according to terrain and such, and depends if their cloaking wears off if incapacitated (and if we can still teleport cloaked beings).
    >> Anonymous 01/28/12(Sat)11:10 No.17708563

Stun Bombs / Shields / Avoidance.

We are making runs in and out, we aren't holding ground or even trying to fight.

If things look really bad in a situation, we teleport our ghosts out of there and try to reinsert somewhere else.
We don't need to kill a single thing to succeed at this mission. We DO need to capture stuff, so that's what I've focused on in planning.
I thought about getting more stealth gear or troops, but I really want to keep that power shield, as it provides a lot of protection from initial incoming fire, and regenerates quickly. It can also potentially protect us from losing a ghost due to a bad decision later on.

If, for some reason, we absolutely have to fight, the ghosts do have a decent gun on their own and some sniper capabilities. They can fire at something, run and let shield recharge, go back, fire some more, etc.

Pretty much. We just nab scientists, port them up, grab useful research or other stuff, port those up.

If we encounter isolated pockets of marines/assassins, we could possibly stun them into unconsciousness then port them up, but it's probably best to avoid any possible confrontations. We probably don't want to take on groups of 5+ aliens or assassins or marines unless they don't/can't notice cloaked stuff and are all packed tightly in a group.

We don't have a set amount of objectives per se, so we're just here to get as much as we can without being blown up, or without mucking up canon. For the purposes of the latter, we might want to question whether some staff/items we loot are essential to the canon characters' survival or not.

You know, an auror might be quite useful here, seeing as it is unlikely that there will be antimagic of any kind. Of course, that's barring interference by the g-Man. But that aside, it is unlikely that any canon natives are likely to be resistant to magic.

Of course, considering that every meta-capable agency and their grandmother know about this day in the canon, we can expect...competition. Be prepared for other groups attempting the same shit.

If we can, get pictures of high-level black mesa scientists (because they may not stay in their high-clearance lab when shit goes down), as well as anyone who needs to survive the day, just to make sure that we don't nab anyone that's canonically important by mistake.

Aurors are quite expensive (50 DOSH now, IIRC).

If we get one auror, we have to give up quite a bit of other stuff.

They are one of the items on my mental list of "If only we had more DOSH."
Lots and lots of things that I don't think will be feasible to take because of the tools that are absolute must-haves for this mission.

As I mentioned earlier, it might be possible to build an alternate loadout with say, an auror and a couple of other wizard types, scrying bowls and the teleporter, but even then the budget would be very tight.

When you think about it, our TG troops budget in the main quest is hideously expensive. I've calculated a conservative estimate of the troops + gear, and we're looking at a minimum 5500 DOSH for them, minus securitrons.

As for the mech + armored vehicle costs, I've calculated them to be all worth at least 9500 DOSH.

So our total troops + mech spending as of current, is nearly 15,000 DOSH.

It's a slick move they did, really. Getting Tosh and Spike a move that isn't planned well at all ("relying on their common sense") and letting it flub so you'll be forced to use your actual ships?

Acting as the Gmans agents in exchange for his help looting? That sounds like our lucky day!

I vote we help him, in canon eli loses his leg, both survive, ensuring this might win us points back home for "preserving the canon", and we gain about the best ally we could hope for here.
We should also ask him if he can be clear and try to not be vague in telling us what he wants us to do, with the justification "We are less likely to mess things up for you if you help us, and tell us exactly what you want us to do for you."

I'm hoping we can just loan him our teleporter for his extractions, and have our agents (while disguised) do things he'd otherwise have to do himself, like that amputation.

Basically, an honest trade of services.

    GOOD IDEA or BAD IDEA?

Your craft's reality distortion meter reads a solid "25", on a scale of 1 to 10,000.
20 of that is from your own forces.
You are in orbit over Black Mesa in a Skyranger.
You have Alice the Spectre, Bob the Ghost, a bunch of gear, and teleport/containment support.
    >> Anonymous 01/28/12(Sat)22:23 No.17715225
Well, both survive canonically, so as long we don't kill them, we are potentially in the clear. Eli loses his leg anyways, so if we happen to do it instead of some accident, we still aren't harming canon with that.

Only if we have to turn them over to G-man or something does it risk harming canon, as they may or may not be returned.

I say we make it a point to try and capture them into containment, as if G-man contacts us later, we can get even more info, even if we end up disagreeing with him at that time.

I also vote for capturing them like we capture any other target; stun bombs and teleport into containment.

    Where to find items:
    Xen Crystal:
Small one is located in the Mass Spectrometer chamber.
Gordon abandoned it there in his rush to get out the door, and nobody else is willing to retrieve it when they are running for their lives.

Large ones are located at Half Life's final boss, on Xen. Prior to the boss's death, they are attached to the wall, and he guards them. After the boss's death, they have been shattered into 3 smaller pieces each, and on the floor.

Gonarch is on Xen. Your HUD map shows which portal leads to her, if you can reach it. The teleportation labs are deep undergrond.

Gargantua roam both Black Mesa and Xen. Your HRV will give you a bonus to finding them, and your Skyranger will keep an eye out for any on the surface.
There is one Canon one that is incredibly easy to reach, and multiple Canon ones that are not.

High Rank Scientists are in the Teleportation Labs, Weapons labs, and Old Teleportation Labs.
Military Assassins roam Black Mesa randomly. There is a large cache of them in one specific location that you could reach, with a bit of effort. Otherwise they are random encounters.
Vortigaunts roam Black Mesa and Xen randomly.

Scientists are in Black Mesa. They are likely to be found in dark areas, cupboards, crawlspaces, and other places out of the way.
Troops are in Black Mesa. They're everywhere.

Alien Aircraft do not appear for 20 minutes, but are in the air above Black Mesa when they do.
Alien Grunts are in Black Mesa. They do not show up for 20 minutes. They are placed randomly.
The Gluon Guns are located either in the Weapon lab, or on the corpses of Scientists who went to Xen.
Bee guns are found on Alien Grunts' corpses.

    Tanks are found outside.
    Helicopters are found outside.
Houndeyes are found inside, typically in corridors or sewers. There is a containment field containing them, that you could access easily.
Alien controllers are typically found only on Xen or in the teleportation labs.

Mr. Teleporter Operator, that is in fact the plan.
I'm SURE the military will make a way up in short order, but it buys us some time inside.

The only flaw I can see is that if the military needs to show up faster due to the speedrunning, we'll have to slow down gordon as well to keep things matched.
We may want to do that anyways though, to buy ourselves more looting time.

The lift craft reveals that Stun bombs are not safe to teleport, as they may explode in the containment field. You would need to arc the Stun bombs straight upward and catch them near the very peak of their arc, and even then, it's not very likely.
However, a teleported stun bomb is as effective as a regular stun bomb.

    BULB MECHANICS:
Common sense is a useful item for any Player Character to have. In many ways, it's what separates a /tg/ player character from any random player character.
These are implemented as a way to stop poor or dumb decisions from screwing people over when they are afk or too busy to play games.

You lose 1 Bulb when missing something obvious, or a plan with obvious flaws, would hurt you considerably.
You gain 1 Bulb when being particularily smart, wise, observant, creative, cluey, or outside the box.
    Sequence break? Get a bulb.
Go off the rails? Get a bulb.
"why don't we just fill the dungeon with water"? Get a bulb.

If you would gain a bulb when your bulbs are already all full, you SUPERCHARGE 1 bulb.
When all bulbs are SUPERCHARGED, your max bulbs increases!
A SUPERCHARGED bulb acts the same as a normal bulb, other than this.

"A lot of the administration of it IS in the planning stages, which is why our status with the military is questionable at the moment. We're only deploying because this is an absolute emergency."

Also maybe add at the end "Speaking of which, let's get you out of here."

I'm not willing to go the extra mile to hide the teleportation from scientists.

Do you wish to teleport the Scientist to Containment, or the Skyranger?

Well, the army will be shooting at us. Can't exactly claim to be part of their command structure once that happens.

I vote for Skyranger for now, if they start acting funny we stuff them in containment. Not maliciously, but we can't afford one of them trying to commandeer any of our controls during this op.

    Here again.

I'm not actually opposed to containment, so if others favor that, we might as well make that decision and move on. We can even claim it's for their own safety 'as the ship could suddenly move at any time'.

Sorry for my dumb ideas, i'll try to be less stupid in the future.

I vote secure containment, since we can still talk to them while they're there, and they cant try taking over the ship from containment.

    The scientist speaks.
"People with technology I've never known,
Come barging in talking about things that only the most Top level scientists know about,
Claiming to be from an experimental government agency,
    And can control teleportation."

"You're working with our Mysterious Benefactor, aren't you."
"He said ... this morning. He, and the Administrator, addressed us. He told us ... to prepare for Unforseen Consequences."
    "I ..."
The Scientist is deep in thought.

OP now requests a break of 30-40 minutes, in order to prepare and eat food.
There will be a new thread after that time, as this one is Autosaging.
