Hey, /tg/, like Bionicle? I do. The toys were really fun to build and play with, and the background story was amazingly fleshed out considering it was just intended to sell toys. Now Lego is just selling that Hero Factory bullshit. But I don't just want fun building toys, I want a story reaching over thousands of years, gods living in the earth and adventure on every island.

I came here today, basically, because /tg/ is all about systems for telling epic stories. I am here, my dear elegan/tg/entlemen, for help and advice in designing a Bionicle RPG.

Just feel free to jump in and contribute any ideas or constructive criticism. I've never really been a "toys" person, but for some reason Bionicle really stuck with me. I want to do this so I can bring my old hobby into my new one and make something others can enjoy too.

    What I'm starting from-

    - Basic d6 success or failure pools. Extra dice are added to basic abilities point-buy at every 3-4 levels or so. In combat or other situations where rolls are opposed, successes of the "defender" can cancel out the successes of the "attacker." This is related to the 6 elements, as "opposite" elements would cancel each other up to a certain point.
    - For simplicity's sake, PCs will be basic 6 elements Toa only.
    - At char-gen, players choose their Toa Tool (weapon) type and receive a starting version of that weapon from a list of starting gear. They also receive a starting mask.
    - You can only apply your full attack bonus or use special weapon attacks with a weapon you selected training in.
    - Perks are also selected at char-gen. They're feats, basically. There is never any requirement for a feat other than minimum level and/or number of dice on an ability.
    - Skills must be trained with actual investment of time between levels. Training in a skill adds 1d8 to the base ability roll. Each number above 6 on the d8 counts as a bonus success.
    - A hex grid would be favorite. Don't ask me why, just an idea.
    - The GM should be referred to as the Great Being (read the lore)

I miss those flash games for the early arcs; nothing gives good flavorful backstory like a POV journey as the guy in charge of recording legends.

I like the ideas so far. Simple is better, and limited abilities means teamwork should always be a big deal when the party is together.

I'm thinking maybe 7 stats. Strength, Fortitude, Agility, Intellect, Spirit, Power and Competence.

The first 5 are your normal abilities, the last 2 are sort of an "extra special something" representing your Toa powers. Power would mostly apply to elemental and mask powers, and Competence to weapon use.

Each toa was associated with an element and each had a mask that gave a special power. I think part of the comic book was that the bionicle were searching for the other masks so they could be poewrful enough to take on the darkness or whatever the BBEG was. Also there were golden masks I don't remember what those did.

    TALKING OF WHICH

I was thinking there should definetly be a perk to let you choose an extra Tool type. There are lots of characters who use a launcher and sword/thingy, or a sword and shield, or something.

And yes, Shields are a separate Tool type. Pics hows why.

    WANK
    >> Anonymous 02/09/12(Thu)23:06 No.17878596
    >>17877466
I would suggest doing shadowrun esque d6 dice polls, or roll and keep like l5r. Keeping things to just 1 die type helps a lot, and dice pools are always fun. For stats you could have the standard array of strength, agility, constitution, wisdom, intelligence and charisma. Base number being 10, which would be the number of d6's rolled. Each character would also have six values for the elements, with their primary at 5, others at 1 and opposite stuck at 1. You could increase stats and elements through experience (base experience pools are more fun than levels) but your opposite element can only be increased through modifiers from spells/masks/feats, never directly. Skills would add the number of dice equal to their rank to checks, unskilled rolls just use the element or stat.

Using equipment, weapons, physical/mental abilities and other mundane things use stats and stat linked skills. Spell and mask use works through one's elements.

Just a few suggestions, from a kind anon overwhelmed with nostalgia.

I liked the green one and the brown one the best. I liked that the brown one was a super-kicker who played soccer with rocks, and kicked rocks at people, and had super-speed power with his mask.

I actually have a big box of all the bits for these guys. Yeas ago, I "remade" the original 5, but on a larger scale, with more articulation and whatnot, using all the later pieces. That was cool. I should do that again.

I managed to get an awesome hellboy-hand on the red guy, with articulated fingers and everything. It incorporated the torso from the parakia or whatever they were called.

under, and for every 10 points under you get a success point. the more success points, the more potent the roll. a certain amount of success points for a roll can equal a crit. 00 is an auto crit. easy to understand system

There was one slizer (the yellow one) that, from what I could remember, was like the umpire of all the slizers when they did their semi-annual hoop toss or something. He was quadrupedal and had two throwers, all the other ones were bipedal and had one, I think. I always kind of wondered, this guy's on all fours, why? Is he somehow lesser than the others? Evidently not, because one of the instruction book comics had him SHOOT A MOTHERFUCKER TO DEATH WITH LIGHTNING. Was it choice? Was there some kind of horrible lightning/frisbee related accident?

I remember when these first came out it was like I had found the holy grail in Lego form.

I actually remember before Bionicle got released, when I'd just gotten past normal Legos and move on to Lego Technic, which was basically the same thing as Bionicle but used to build cars and shit.

The Bohrok were pretty awesome when they came out. My friend and I built them with their teeth upside down so that they had fangs. This was partly because it looked cooler but also because the hooked teeth made it easier to defeat other Bohrok models in head-bashing battles.

    Man, good times, good times.

I dunno about this guys. The majority of a toas powers come from their magical masks. By the time everyone has every mask each character will be mostly indistinguishable. Also consider that mask poewrs aren't really balanced. Some give great benefits like super strength or speed and others give x-ray vision and water breathing. Don't try and pretend Gali is cooler or more useful than aquaman.

What about a system whereby the players take control of the little dudes and run around trying to solve minor problems and occassionally assist the Toa like in the game. This would allow for more character variety and you could include the lesser masks if you really wanted to (I think the little guys could wear lesser masks.) I dunno if /tg/ is gonna get all assburgerss about playing in a setting with uber powerful being if they can't play as the uber powerful beings.

I also think this would be good as a tabletop. Each of the tribes have unique abilities and they tame a variety of interesting creatures to use as instruments of war. The toa and the spiritual leaders could be heroes and generals n'stuff.

Yeah, I loved the original series, but sadly only convinced my mother to buy me some by the time of the second series. Those weren't bad, but I preferred the orignals (and I played the shit out of the original flash game of the chronicler)
Then after the second series they went from "kinda cool" to "butt ugly" imo.

Also for those interested, these guys salvaged a bunch of the mata nui flash games, including the first 2 adventure games: http://bionicleonlinegamesarchive.weebly.com/index.html

Those were the last ones I got, before losing interest....no that's not it, feeling too old, yeah, that's it.
They also released those mini-figures around that time.
My friend who I always used to play bionicle with had the lego magazine. Shit, we didn't buy those setsbut damn it we were drooling all over the place.
Also hot adventures with 12 toa going around fucking shit up. And then when the new ones came out we had the story go that the old ones transformed to the Toa Nuva and the old one's were used as some newbie toa that were sent to the island.

    God those were awesome times.

    Agreed.
Playing as the toa leaves room for far less intrigue, as they are basically free to do whatever they please, seeing that they are semi messianic legendary heroes.
As a matoran, you'd start from much lower level, and your would need to interact with the other matorans to achieve something. And most importantly, a matoran can't start dicking around with others, and face no consequences like a toa theoretically could. Who is gonna stop a dickish toa from being a dick? The other toas?

Forgive my ignorance, as I remember Bionicle but never actually owned any figures, but as a matoran could a running theme be upgrading yourself with various parts/masks to make yourself more and more useful to the toa? Eventually in the far endgame you might even measure up to the toa, becoming the next generation or or tagging in when they're wounded or something.

The second generation Toa were kinda shitty. Too plasticy and toy-ey. The first generation were perfect.

    But the Bohrok fucking rocked.
And the Matoran were cool too.

Is it wrong that I want to crank up the whole polynesian mythology vibe a lot further?

nope. the first evil guys were just some animals, then came the Bohroks, who were ler by the two Barhags (those badass tyranosaurus-like motherfuckers). they both obey Makuta, but Makuta was released after the Borhok, Barhags and Borok-Kai. If my memory doesn't fool me, he came at the same time as the Rakshi. And in the story, it's after defeating the Barhags that the Toas became the Toa-Nuva in order to defeat Makuta and his Rakshis... or at least, this is how I remember this... old memories from an ancient time when I sneaked into my big grother's room to read his Lego-magazine when he was not there...

makuta was a spiritual entity, in the first arc they quested to find the hidden masks throughout the island to banish him with their sheer power, however they never directly fought him.
cadok and gahdok were the first BBEG we actually saw; and fought behind the massive bohrok hive, and unloced the exo suits (which ultimately dampened their elemental powers) and then unlocked he Toa nuva powers to boost their elemental powers in the final chapter for that arc, killing cadok and gahdok, but not their legacy as shown by the more intelligent Bohrok-kal.

now, if i may implore the mass to stay on subject for just a moment, i think that d100 would be the best system for this sort of thing. have boosts provided by masks, but also have the availability for a mask to be lost stolen or knocked off. since toa can only wear a single mask at a time, so rather than changing out their weapons, players will change out their masks instead and continue playing the roles given to them with certain stats boosted as a minor action to change out the mask (though all toa are skilled in combat, some are more than others)
    easy and fun.

I'm half thinking about doing one... But I feel like it would be a half-assed attempt if I didn't do some research first. I stopped reading the comics after the Metro Nui series...

(Not to mention the fact that I've only been DMing a 3.5 campaign for 3 months and have NO prior DM experience. Would also by my first quest thread....)

Still kind of want to try, though.

Dam, this is exactly the stuff I that I disliked in the newer bionicles. And the impossible timescales too. 1000,000 years ago? And matorans can live for thousands of fucking years. All these thousands of years felt so out of scale with the action itself, that seemed to take at most few years.

Do me a favor, if you do the quest, just ignore the new stuff.
It is honestly much worse than the original mata nuit saga.

Let us play as a matoran in Mata Nui, keep shit mysterious, make the toas enigmatic heroes, but not the center point of the quest. I would enjoy it far more if it was mainly about the adventures of some random matoran.

This. It's a mysterious island, all life is mechanical, etc.

The chronicler in the 2001 game was an awesome example of how a quest character could have been played, but for an actual quest we need less contact with the toas than Takua.
Not sure about the second game, I don't really recall that much from it.

My original thought was to have you wake up as a Toa coming out of a capsule. I would let the players decide what type and give a few options. I would then want to have shit go down only minutes afterward to create initial tension, and eventually allow the Toa to meet up with the others and gain the trust/help of the matoran tribe leaders.

Not sure how to make a Matoran quest... They just seemed so lame to me, but maybe I just haven't seen enough awesome Matoran.

Also I kind of like the idea of a freeform Toa creation system. I get that they have to stick to an element, but being able to create and give personality to your own Toa would be awesome if you got to roleplay them. Maybe that's just me.

    That would work too.
The tone of the quest would be much different though.
The toas are much more powerful than the matorans, thus making them quite independent. They are like manifestations of their element, even without the mask powers.

i would prefer matorans, as I have certain fondness over them, due to watching the matoran animations and playing both mata nuit online games.
To me, the matorans are quite cute and awesome at the same time.

Animations like these are what made me love matorans.

Plus, the idea of making Mata Nui a more dangerous and tough place for a Fresh Toa with no experience (or knowledge of any kind other than imparted memories for that matter) sounds pretty fun. Most of the campaign would be spent trying to keep the Matoran villages you get around to protecting and making friends with from being annihilated left and right. Dark promordial powers left and right makes a nice challenge for 6 Toa Mata, much less 1 who is trying to figure out what the hell is going on...

Hell yeah, Mata Nui was where all the good shit was at. What I'm thinking though is a lot of bro status characters that can help you out at the tough moments if you build it up... And the true problem of Toa "Teamwork"... What I see is... Kopaka being a badass and doing things on his own since he's efficient and usually solitary, and perhaps having trouble with the "That Guy Toa" of your "party". Sort of like a guy that ALWAYS has the opposite idea you do and is kind of a complete nuisance to you left and right, but Toas are all about unity and you have to develop synergy with him... Yeah good luck on that.

Although I'm considering doing a "custom" set of Toa for 2 reasons. 1, to make it original and allowing the thread more freedom with Toa personality and characteristics (perhaps making them less of mary sue characters), and 2, because I'm worried I wouldn't portray them correctly... I'd be going for a much more "mature" and less "kid comic book" feel for the quest.

I for one, don't mind if you don't use the original toa.
The setting itself isn't entirely dependent on the toa mata, and trying to save mata nui.

You could just say that it all just a big cycle and the toa always return to mata nuit to save it. There is much more stupid ideas in the official cannon, so you tweaking it a little to suit your quest better wouldn't get any flack from me at least.

I'd like the character creation to be a bit like browsing through a box of pieces.

You got your basic Toa body and maybe you want to add some claws, or maybe two sword, or heavy boots, or one sword and a shield or whatnot.
And every part costs a certain amount of points, and extra abilities/stats cost poitns as well and so you could build either a character with weaker stats but lots of gear, or a character with high stats and not so much gear.
    I don't know.

I'm thinking Lewa might be a good final choice, much as I hate to say it. Though I don't want ANY of them to be hateable, but I do want to create a feeling of group tension and leave a little bit of creating and interpersonal problem solving to the people in the thread.

Well Tahu and Kopaka have some issues with each other.
Maybe Gali has some problems with Lewa being a ADHS loud-mouthing prankster.
And I think there was some problem between Onua and someone else, because he was digging into the terretory of another village. I think I was Pohatu.
Also I think Onua is more a slow guy, who likes dark places and Pohatu is energetic and likes the sun.

Those all make interesting ideas. If you scroll up (nevermind, just gonna repost it), I mentioned this:

    >Like... a Yellow Sonic Toa, (Hatelu, or some shit)... Being able to break rocks and shit with vibrations, and create arcs of sonic blasts at opponents... And having fairly good hearing.
(Having the "Legunu", Mask of Alacrity, granting super-reflexes or some shit. Can you tell I want to play in a Mata Nui tabletop?)

Not that I would actually just do this... I would probably give 6-10 options (or better yet...combinations) at the start.

Yeah, a few options at the start would be best. Main problem with leaving it entirely open often gets a bunch of people each going for their own idea and nobody supporting each other. Some started ideas would be sonic, shadow, electricity (although that might be a bit OP in a world of robots), etc.

I prefer the bio-mechanical approach. While they are technically metal-based life, they would be for all intents and purposes organic.

And I like those ideas... Shadow specifically... As long as they dont try to make a LOLRANDUMB CN Rogue/Duskblade/Shadowdancer Toa.
