While Yeager was busy bouncing your head off the side of a toolbox, you realized what was so naggingly familiar about those strange radio signals. Funny how that works, isn't it?

"Back during the Battle, the Luftwaffe was using radio guidance to guide your level bombers to their targets at night, right?"

    Minna nods. "So?"

"So, the English didn't have a fucking clue. Even after they realized radio beams were being broadcast from the Continent, they didn't think much of it. A few guys made some noise about it being a possible bomb-guidance system. They had to commandeer an amateur civvie radio set right off the shelf of a department store; it was the only one that could transmit or receive in the 40-watt range that they could find, see - and they just flew around at random in a fucking trainer until they found the beams."

"And then they found them crossing right over the Rolls-Royce plant," Minna finishes.

"And shit a metric ton of bricks, yes."

Minna's mouth quirks a bit. "They really just flew around in a trainer? At random?"

You nod. "Hell, the permission for that single flight was almost cancelled. Heard the whole story from the co-pilot over beers at Sutton Farm."

    "That was it? Really?"

You nod. "Hell, they almost canceled that one flight."

"So... one more blockheaded bureaucratic, and..." Minna's expression goes distant for a moment. You know she fought in the Battle, and they say it was pretty rough on the Witches. "Anyway," she says, focusing on you again. "You're saying we should take a spin, see what we can sniff out?"

"I've got a plane with a radar set and three radios," you point out. "And a damn good man to operate them."

Minna nods. "And we've got Sanya, so add magical antennas to that mix," she says. "She slept like a rock after we pulled her out of the Channel. It's pretty soon, but... it's just a ramble, and.. we really don't have the luxury of time." Minna looks a bit sad as she says that, but shakes it off with visible effort and closes her eyes, taking deep breaths. "Just a minute. Let me find her."

The 24 hours only refers to that specific day, and they end at midnight EST because that's where moot lives, in New York, just like me. I had the ban run out having acquired it at a 2349 EST dump thread once, and I posted with my normal trip about twelve minutes later with no problems.

Take Sanya up in our plane, have her deploy once we're at altitude. Best to minimize her flight time until she's had a bit more chance to recover.

In the future, that would probably be a good idea in general for missions where we aren't scrambling at a moment's notice; the less magic the Witches have to expend getting into the air, the more they can use to fight aliums.

"Still in her quarters," Minna says thoughtfully. She sighs. "I hate to wake her, but... will you come with me? You're the one that saved her bacon last night, she might want to see you."

"I didn't do that much," you say. "I doubt we sank any of those boats. Did we?"

"No, but that's not the point," Minna says. "You came roaring in fifty feet off the water, all guns blazing, UPSIDE DOWN. They bugged out like the hounds of hell were after them."

"It was more like three hundred feet," you say modestly.

"Not by the time you pulled out, according to Eila. She was close enough to see."

"I'd appreciate it if you didn't mention that to Sean," you say nervously, looking around.

Minna leads you through the lounge/foyer area, with the grand piano and the large staircase, on her way to the dorms. In the lounge, on a brand-new couch, you see Ian, his usual careless slouch rather tense, and pressing him up against the sofa's arm. Sitting next to him is Perrine, legs crossed demurely as she silently sips at her tea. Her pupils are stuck in the corner of her eyes, locked on Ian with rapt attention without actually turning her head to him. Her cheeks are a little pink, and so intent on Ian she doesn't even spare you a nasty glance.

Ian, however, is a different story. His eyes bore into you with the perfectly blank expression enlisted men use when they want "yes sir" to sound like "fuck you."

You yank the folded newspaper out of your back pocket and brandish it at him angrily. Stone houses, motherfucker. After a second's consideration, you whip it at Perrine's head. Ian's casual air of careless contempt vanishes in a split-second as he leaps for the newspaper like a coiled spring unleashed, but his swift snatch only attracts Perrine's interest.

The yelling starts about when you and Minna reach the top of the stairs.

    You knock on Sanya's door.

"Sanya, it's Minna," Minna says. "I need to talk to you. That's an order."

"Not like her at all to disobey an order," Minna says, looking sideways at you.

You try the door, and the knob rattles uselessly against a thrown deadbolt. You glance at Minna, and she nods. Together, you wind up and throw your shoulders against the door.

    Together, you bounce off uselessly.

"Fuck it," you say, and wind up with a kick that smashes the deadbolt through the thin wood of the doorjamb. Spot-on construction there, chaps. Minna's inside the door before you can recover from your kick, scanning the room as if she knows what she's about. Perhaps she does. You both zero in on a quivering little lump under the covers on the bed, shivering miserably.

"Sanya!?" Minna says with alarm. You both race over to the lump. A momentary terror crosses your thoughts, but when the little lump moans and cries, the misery is in Sanya's voice.
    >> Anonymous 02/16/12(Thu)00:56 No.17971272
If, as I assume, the brass is gearing up for a push into France, Minna's head is all in "oh god these fuckers (and in particular a certain asshole pilot) are going to get killed and there's nothing I can do to help it" mode. There won't be a handy Yoshika around if some hail of masers cuts us down midair. Not to mention all the hordes of poor grunts and regular pilots that will get waxed.

Yes, yes, war is hell, deal with it, etc. Hell, she probably is dealing with it, trying to push it as far away from her mind as possible. Doesn't mean it's easy.

"Sanya!" Minna says, her voice twisting with worry, and your heart sinks. You try to imagine what it must've been like, floating helpless in the water, waiting for the Martians to approach you, watching them come closer and closer as you prayed for help - and then afterwards, everybody too panicked and busy after the aftermath of a major raid to see what's wrong. Minna sits on the bed next to Sanya, gently touching her shoulder. "C'mon kid, talk to me."

You hover nearby, swallowing awkwardly. Sanya's young, but this is the first time she really *looks* young, curled into a miserable little ball on her bed, trembling and shaking. She's, what, fifteen? War's a young man's game, and you know you're old before your time already, but Jesus, she's *fifteen.* You think briefly of Zuuchini, all of twelve or thirteen, and feel a pang of sharp shame at dismissing her antics so cruelly. You can't even imagine being thousands of miles away from your own mother at thirteen, fighting a desperate war against steep odds.

Sanya cries something, shoving weakly at Minna.

"Come on, honey, tell me," Minna cajoles softly, stroking Sanya's hair.

    "... die..."

"Nobody's going to die, Sanya," Minna croons. "You're safe."

Sanya rises halfway and turns bleary eyes and a tear-streaked face to Minna. "G-g-o a-w-wwwwaaaay~"

Something in Minna breaks. You see her strong, upright posture crumple as the sharpness of her eyes softens, and a tear runs down her cheek. She gathers Sanya to her breast, stroking her hair gently.

"Soldiers never leave a comrade behind," she says, her voice breaking.

Sanya sobs, a terrible tearing sound of despair and misery. You see a flash of silver, and watch blankly as Sanya presses a Walther against Minna's temple and pulls the trigger.

And now for something... actually quite similar.

“You called, Cap’n?” James strode into single-room prefabricated shack that was the 48th Pursuit Squadron’s headquarters. Captain Lawrence Bristol sat behind a beat up, wooden desk, a small electric fan providing the only relief from the North African heat.
“Lt. Anders. Heard you guys had another run in with the Martians today…” He glanced tiredly down at a freshly delivered report. “512th says you engaged against their wishes again…”
James took a seat in the wobbly office chair in front the captain’s desk. “Sir, North African USAAC ROE states that pursuits squadrons are-“
“…free to aggressively engage hostile air threats within their patrol zone. I know, Anders, I know.” He sighed resigned to the fact that James actions had been within the theatre’s Rules of Engagement. “Do you really have to steal kills off the witches though? Their base commander makes it a goddamn point of making my life hell every time you pull this shit.” He flipped to the second page of the report. “They’re saying you engaged out of your patrol area…”

“Couldn’t say, Cap’n. Flip spotted the furball on the outbound leg, so we might’ve been a few klicks over the line.” He paused to think. “Is the 512th interpreting our orders so that we should wait for sighted enemies to travel within our PZ before we engage? Because I’m fairly certain any brass worth their wings would laugh that right off his desk…”
Piloting came as naturally as breathing, walking and jerking off to James, but negotiating the minutiae of Army Air Corp rules and regulations had been something he’d learned and learned quick once they’d figured out how to knock the Geeks out of the sky. It was all about knowing the rules well enough to creatively interpret their loopholes.
Captain Bristol sighed to hide his smile. He was a pretty good CO and made a habit of looking after his pilots. He’d fill in the rest of the blanks, like he’d done every other time the Sparkles had thrown a tantrum over the 48th kill-stealing shenanigans.
“How’s the new kid?” He asked as he started penning his reply.
“Flip? Smart, aggressive, knows when to follow orders…”
Bristol continued the thought: “…And when to ignore them…”

“Can we keep him? Huh? Can we? Can we?” Anders bounced in his seat like an excited eight-year-old. “I promise we’ll take care of him and…”
“Weltson wants you leading third flight tomorrow.” Anders stopped mid-bounce, the chair letting out a final creak as he did so. “Mancini’s fighter’s still out of commission, we’re waiting on a half dozen parts. We were supposed to get them with the new supply shipment, but the Martians got them as they were heading through Gibraltar.” Anders remembered the news; supply ship fleet got chewed up pretty bad when about a dozen geeks dropped from orbit right on top of them. “Now they’re having to bring the Indianapolis and her escorts up from the South Atlantic to watch the next one. Either way, he’s not getting into the air in the forseeable future.”
James mind careened through this new information. Flight lead was an actual leadership position, not just having seniority and rank over a wingman. Still, it was rotten luck for Mancini, unlikable greaser that he was: It was a hell of a thing for a pilot to be grounded.
    “Anders, don’t screw this up.”

The next morning, the squadron was assembled in the tent while Weltson went over the various briefing and warnings. “…so keep an eye out. We aren’t expecting anything out of the geeks today, but command wants us flying four-man flights since they’ve been coming ahead of schedule more often these days.” Harry turned to James. “That being said, Mancini’s plane is out of commission, so Anders, you’re taking over his flight today.”
It wasn’t a surprise, but James beamed anyway. “Sir!”
Twenty minutes later fifteen P-38L’s arranged themselves on the base’s runway, waiting impatiently for their turn to take off. “Tomcat flight, you are clear for takeoff. Good hunting.” James didn’t wait for a second invitation. He powered up the twin Allison’s and twenty-four cylinders drove the warplane forward until it lifted smoothly into clear blue skies.
“Alright, Tomcats, form up and let’s go hunt some Aliums.” He called back to his flight, as they formed into the finger-four over the Egyptian coast. Bernard “Flip” Sanders, the greenest of the flight was on Ander’s wing. Second element was Jeffrey McHale and his wingman David Silverman. Somewhere to the east was Weltson’s Red Flight, further than that was Yellow Flight. Back near the Libyan border was Blue flight.

“So, anyone hear any good scuttlebutt?” McHale called out. This was undoubtedly an off-day, the Martian attack yesterday had meant they weren’t due for another week.
“Heard the Sparkles have are posting pictures of our planes in their dining hall.” Silverman replied. “I was drinking with a guy who works on the Striker units. Says they have a bounty on the first witch who can steal a kill off us.”
James smiled. “Well, I’m not sure if they get up early enough to…”
“All flights! All flights!” Weltson’s voice came over the radio. “Martians coming in hot. God there’s a lot of them… Tally three steamsleds and escorts Grid-Six-Romeo-Agh!” The radio went silent.
“Tomcat lead, respond.” Silence. “Harry!” James blood went cold. Harry was gone. He acted faster than his brain could compute. “All flights, Grid-Six-Romeo.” At the same time he was turning his own Lightning back to the east, throwing the throttles forward and climbing for altitude. He continued talking into the radio- it was on the tactical frequency, so it was going out to every plane listening and half a dozen bases along the coast. “Red flight isn’t responding, assume destroyed…”

Alright, now that the main debacle is over and done, let's get to the subject of... NGAF.

Namely, how half the people thread manage to screw it up, every thread since thread six.

    Not giving a fuck.

It is different from actively going out of your way to be an asshole.

Therefore: NGAF != Being an Asshole.

For one, NGAF is mostly embodied by being awesome and brolike. Sure, there are rules, and such, but they don't really apply to one who is NGAF. And there are asshole commanders. They are to be disregarded. For NGAF does not care for assholes.

But the moment you start being an asshole to somebody who hasn't earned it, you cross the line. No longer are you NGAF. No John, you are the assholes.

There. That was a commonly agreed upon ideal for NGAF. Namely, disregarding the authority, and the assholes, without becoming one.

Now, the part where it gets screwed up, is where people decide that showing any human emotion besides "Hargle blargle, Trollan, no fucks giving" equates to being a dickless, pillow humping submissive, to quote some of the fellows on that side.

Now, while I can agree that not every single female character in this quest is to be pursued as Mai Waifu and treated like fragile, expensive crystal, because that is just as bad, we need to shift it away from one extreme or the other.

(Part Fucking Two, because my rant is apparently too long for this box to handle.)

Namely, MC is a bit of a jackass, but not a lot. He is a pilot, he is reckless, thickheaded and disregards authority, and becomes easily overreactionary. However, he is not emotionally dead throughout most of the spectrum. Which means that if he sees a little 15 year old girl in trouble, he's not going to go "Lol get over it faggot" or try to waifu it up. He may try to comfort her. He may even go as far as to awkwardly pat her on the back or try to cheer her up. Or as the case may be, he may just stand awkwardly off to the side. And then when she whips out a mauser and tries to murder a commanding officer, he will flip the fuck out.

Given the choice there is only one answer to that, even if you don't like Minna, watching her get her brains splattered by what is likely another victim of alium mind control of serious PTSD is going to seriously kill our morale.

That said, I don't think there is even really a choice in that regard, either we'll Gnome, or we won't. We might not even know if we did because for us it's not something we control, it's just something we innately do as Chuck managed to point out to us.

So if it's going to work, it'll work, if not, it won't, but we aren't going to make a concious choice about it. We'll likely open on Saturday with the consequences and being asked how we follow them up. Eventually the Witches will find out about our nature somehow, we're already looking dodgy as fuck to most of them.

The question now is if we can remotely, subconsciously, make that gun jam or happen to have been unloaded at the time. Or who knows, maybe Minna is resistant to bullets...

Eitherway, these next few days will test your love for Minna. Personally I still think there are better choices.

Mine has only done so once. Light strike on the primer due to a long period of shooting dirty ammo with hard primers and my being lax in cleaning the gunk out of the chamber. A pound or so of force either way would have made the difference.

Now, I'll agree with you on the bad start part. I decided to skip tact and jump straight into the arguing.
Mostly because anyone who puts down someone elses views while espousing their own, is most likely going to get labled that, especially if they aren't being sparing on the insults.
As for that prior "arguement", it wasn't much of an arguement, it was a quotation, as evidenced by the nonfuctioning link to a post in an archived thread, namely SWQ Thread VI. Which in itself, was a post for more of a definition than anything else.
And yes, you can be an asshole without going out of your way to be one.You can be an asshole, but it always takes some effort. Even if that effort is just to think up some way to be insulting or abrasive or to disregard the authority of an individual.
As for the disregarding of authority equating being an asshole, read closer. The idea is that the authority of an individual who is a fucking prick, is not to be taken seriously doesn't mean you there are the asshole. Nobody likes being ordered around by somebody who treats them like dirt. There it is defined as a case where either way, they are going to treat you horribly, so the effort of trying to please them might as well be channeled into disregarding them instead.
As for a middleground, if people would actually look at this and think "Gee, there's no middleground, maybe I'll stand up for one and see if I can't get enough people to make one, maybe there will be."

If there is no third choice, try making one.

The whole idea for that is maybe if we all stopped screaming obscenities and insults at each other, perhaps we'd get something better out of it.

Now going off to my start by belittling half the people here, not the best start, true. I'll admit that. Hindsight is 20/20 they say, and all.

I roll with the Inner Sphere, mostly, although I like me some Hells Horses. Clan Tanks, so much rape.

For a semi-auto? A shitload. The slide being pushed out-of-battery by even an eight of an inch will do it (this already happened to MC when the Martian tried to cap him with his own pistol.) The round could be a dud, or a hang-fire, or have a light primer strike as >>17972082 points out, unfortunately the Walter is a double-action pistol so a second trigger pull would set THAT one to rights right quick. The hammer could get cloth snagged between it and the frame, preventing it from falling, the primer might be set just a little too deep into that particular round, ect, ect, ect.

They're all insane long-shots, though. And the MC isn't in physical contact with the pistol this time.

Second: you seem to be talking like there's an objective standard for being an asshole. That clearly seems to be incorrect; what may be an asshole move to one person could be perfectly acceptable to another. To wit, what you think is MC being an asshole, other people think is him being reasonable. Your perspective isn't privileged, so you're not in a position to dictate what is and what isn't the proper scope of NGAF behavior.
    >> Anonymous 02/16/12(Thu)02:13 No.17972224

That would be a difficult bet, the majority of Anti-Minnas are suchly aligned for they have their own Waifu to champion and as such dislike her level of screen time compared to their own Waifu.

However, introducing a death in such a manner will surely give them pause for thought. As the most commonly occouring character of the Witches, it would clearly state that death is readily on the cards, for the Witches at least, and perhaps in some ways will let the others realise that the next one to die will be their own Waifus.

Though really? Regardless of the outcome, we will at the very least lose Sanya, either from trauma and shock or from confinement due to security issues. That I know will disrupt our plans somewhat and probably upset the few Sanya waifu supporters.

Those who are angriest will be those who are the least foward thinking, and those slowest to call for a medic.

we shouldn't dictate what is and what isn't.

Now, really, when I strip off most of the chaff, what I'm espousing is trying to compromise. Get rid of what widely is considered the worst bits of asshole-dom, and possibly waifu-ness and try to be more centric.

Minna would be a horrible waste of a Hero Requisition, I'm pretty sure Strike Witches is pure TSAB territory, the Abjurers or Scions would kick her ass in a Magic fight, and I don't think her mind could handle the evil shit the Transpace Guard has to do every now and then, like making sure her boyfriend never gets on that transport plane.

A smaller black widow also wouldn't mess up our night camo.

Is this something real, or something that /tg/ made up?
    >> Starshadow 02/16/12(Thu)04:34 No.17973135
Oh its quite real. Just like Chapter Master.

I'd love to see what would the players do if she's a default starting hero.

    A soldier's heart
    Reflecting back at me
    I keep seeing mutilated faces
    Even in my dreams
    Distorted images
    Flashing rapidly
    Psychotically abusing me
    Devouring my brain

    The eyes of the insane
    On a demented campaign

    Tortured spirits
    Will not let me rest
    These thoughts of mutilated faces
    Completely posessed
    Fragmented images
    Flashing rapidly
    Psychotically abusing me
    Whirling through my head

    Battle mortise
    Overwhelming anxiety
    Panic attacks
Death raising it's ugly face at me!

    Got to make it stop
    Can't take it any more
    They're all dead
    Keep haunting me
They just keep coming back for more!

    A soldier
    Of misfortune
I owe my pain and suffering
    To this hell
    These demons
    Ripping through my soul
    Evil's relentless hostility
    Won't let me sleep

    Battle mortise
    Devastating insanity
    Panic attacks
    Death's rotting
    He's coming for me!!
