    PREVIOUSLY, ON METAHUMAN RENAISSANCE:
While questing for a training montage, Dan ventured into the depths of the Parapsychology building and found the Evokers' Club, a group of paranormal metahumans bent on training their abilities, operated by a Professor Harry Blackstone, who in no way resembles a certain Wizard Detective. After hanging out an getting his ass partially handed to him by Jeanne, the french witch of dragons, he spoke with Blackstone who offered him some advice, and a chance to learn more, if he came back in the afternoon. He then called up Roxy, and went with the Evokers' to IHOP for DELICIOUS PANCAKES.

You are sitting at the IHOP in the shopping district, eating pancakes, because its mutherfucking IHOP. You, Roxy and the Evokers' Club all are crowded around one table. Currently, Roxane, Jeanna and Anya (Who are positioned opposite, to your right and to your left, respectively) are having a complicated theoretical discussion about the relation of Esoteric Sciences to the conventional ones. Huan, Summanus, Sunshine and you, however, are having a pleasant discourse over which edition of DnD is better. It ends with the various sides having to agree to disagree.

    >So, who do you want to engage in further conversation with?

"I wouldn't be breaking any unwritten rule if I asked if anybody knows anything about Outsiders, would I?" You try and be polite as you can. Conversation halts for a second, since you drew attention to yourself. Anya shoots you a sideways glance over her side of extra chewy bacon. "Depends who or what you're asking about. Is that what you needed to speak with Professor Blackstone about?" You nod. When nobody reacts, you remember that Anya is still blind, so you say "Yes." Jeanne furrows her brow. "Outsiders... that is, entities from outside our proper universe, they are a mixed bag, I believe is a good English metaphor. It depends on what dimension you dial out' to." "From what I understand," Continues Summanus "All of them tend to be very alien in though processes, at least all the ones we can reach. Even our local realities "alien" species have some things in common with us. It seems to be how our universe played out. Outsiders..." He pauses for a second. Anya steps in to finish his thought. "Local Aliens, for lack of a better term, still play by our rules. Outsiders play with their house rules."

"That can help." Says Jeanne, "But its not a guarantee. Predicting Outsiders is hard. Especially the big ones. There are some obscure branches of magic which relate to more species-like Outsiders, who are multiple beings." "I'd be careful about that, though," cuts in Anya. "They're worse than demons, from what I've read. A lot of them want to come live here." "I'm sure demons would like to leave where ever it is in this universe they dwell." You say. "Yeah, but demons don't erode reality just by standing in it. Usually." Yikes. It the more you learn about stuff beyond your ken, the less you want to know.

"Oh Christ no." Says Jeanne, succinctly and for the group. "For one, only the professors and their research assistance have access to those books. For another, just because I rewrite the rules of reality on a daily basis, doesn't mean I don't like my sanity right were it is, thanks." You get the odd sensation of Anya's non-existant eyeballs locked onto your brain-pan. "You're being 'targeted' by an Outsider?" She asks, part incredulous, part probing. "Okay, so the human agent of an Outsider." You correct yourself. "But that's practically the same thing, right?" The table sinks into thoughtful silence, and Roxane orders another cup of coffee from the waitress. Jeanne speaks up first. "Well, while obviously you should worry about the practitioner, as should we all," She shoots a meaningful look at the other members of the club, "It takes a metric fuckton of energy to cross universes, magical or otherwise. Since nobody has been inking a giant summoning matrix into the streets with the blood of virgins or something, you're probably safe."

Anya speaks in a quiet voice. "But if the agent has a direct link, she has a line to pull it here." Huan actually speaks up, having been silent for some time. "It is as Jeanne says. Even while this practitioner does have the ability to guide their master to our world, it cannot be done with out massive amounts of energy. Or, smaller amounts of energy, with some very obvious artifact. Even demons, who are from our reality, require much effort on the part of a summoner to call." Roxane speaks up for the first time. "I'm not much on the Esoteric side, but I know nobody has been moving any imposing black monoliths onto campus." All the Evokers' say something to the effect of "They're a student" almost simultaneously. Together, you and Roxane relay what you know of 'Red'.

"Hrm." Muses Jeanne. "I don't go for Arcanomathematics, since as a natural magus, I don't need to do reality bending math problems to get the effect I desire. But I have seen some of the people who go to those classes, and, sans tattoos, that sounds like a couple of those girls."

Since this was actually a couple threads ago, I'd like to give a reminder that there is a greater Outsider (Like a Great Old One or an Outer God) which is called "Red or Crimson Star, King of Blood, Lord of the Red Earth." and then there is the smaller, more humanoid creature which seems to be spiritually following the woman (Who is termed "Herald") which is the Voice or Champion of the Red Star.

If you already mentioned her to the police and to professor Blackstone, that should be sufficient. I know one of the girls wouldn't be in today, and if any of them is this Outsider agent, I don't see why she'd show up at all, especially with the semester over."

She thinks for a second, then fishes in one of the pouches she wears on he belt and pulls out her phone. "How about this? I have to go into the building anyway, because I'm doing additional work over the summer. If I see either of them, especially if they have new tattoos, I'll send one of you a picture with my phone. If you say its her, I'll call in the Professor Blackstone and the police." You nod, and both you and Roxane exchange phone numbers with Jeanne, so she can get a hold of you.

You thank Jeanne for her help, and go back to small talk until everyone is done eating. The Club then goes their separate ways, all saying they'll meet again on Saturday. You, Roxane and Jeanne all ride the monorail back to campus, before she splits off to go do her business, and Roxane also leaves, saying that "Since you got her up so early, she may as well work".

You head on back to your room, and open the door, to find Dave, your roommate, sitting on your shitty couch, playing Mass Effect 3. "Dave," You say, by way of conversation starter. "Yeah?" He doesn't look up from killing... something. You can't see the screen so well from the door. "You did that paper on the Parkour community in the city a few semesters back, right?" He spares you half a glance. "Yeah, why?" "Just wondering if you stayed in touch with any of those people. Thinking of finally taking up some Free Running." You say, at maximum casual. Dave pauses his game, and looks at you, like an Anthropologist studying obscure habits of native tribes. Which, technically, he is. Kind of. "You met a girl." He starts. "You met a girl, and now you want to impress her, by showing off how much of traceur you are." "Yes, Dave. That is exactly what is going on here." Poker face setting = Maximum.

Dave ponders for a bit. "Yeah, I have some contact information. I stay apprised, in case something happens and I need to write a new paper." Good ole' Dave.

Dave gets you what you need, and basically paves the way a little. You meet with a handful of the Free-runners, and introduce yourself. They're currently hanging out in one of the 'skate' parks in Campus Town, which really caters to anyone who wants to hang out outside and do tricks for gawkers with cellphone cameras. You made sure to change up your look a little so you aren't obviously the coffee-shop guy. The 'leader' of this little pack looks you up and down. "Alright, you look like you can move pretty good. But we got to see if you've got the basics down before we go see if you can do some courses." He points out a space next to him. "Get from here," He points all the way to the other end of the park. (2x4 and 2x6 on Tactics)

You do what you do best. Plan. Quickly, in your head, to calculate out the shortest possible route vis-a-vis your ability to dodge shit. "Time's wasting, new meat!" Says one of the traceurs, a woman. You hop the rail, and are off. By timing it just right, you avoid people and obstacles, and manage to cross the park in short order with minimal need for any moves. You arrive at the designated finish, and turn, to see the free-runners moving like liquid lightning through the crowd to catch up with you. The leader does a forward flip and lands in a crouch just in front of you. "You got the right mind for sure, holmes." Says he. "Okay, we can help you practice. Since some times, you gonna need to jump and run over shit. Here's the deal:" He breaks it down for you. They have a couple of areas in the city, where they have set up "courses" of sorts, where they do races, time trials, and so on to hone skills. While Parkour isn't apparently about competition, you also need something to measure yourself against. So, you need to pick which one of them to go with, to run what area.

    >Run Dockside. This is the most dangerous, since you'll be navigating warehouses and stacks of shipping containers, but will net you the fastest skill growth
    >Run Little Asia. The buildings are smaller here, and there's more ground clutter, so the runs are safer, but offer less opportunity to improve.
    >Run The Projects. This is a medium level course, with a mix of ground and roof-level work. But its in the bad side of town, so you may run risks other than just falls.

To the docks! You hum the batman scene wipe music in your mind.

You arrive with a couple of the other runners via monorail. All of a sudden, a fourth guy jumps off the top of a company warehouse, onto the top of a truck trailer, runs up, slides down the front of the cab, and lands in front of the guy in charge. "Julio." He says, only slightly out of breath. "Your brother wants you." "Shit, man." The main runner looks to you and the others. "Knew I should have taken my phone today. I need to go take care of this. You show him the ropes, Karla?" The female traceuse nods.

He leaves in a spectacular display of talent, and you're left with a couple dudes and your new babysitter, Karla. She waves them on ahead, and turns to speak to you. "'Kay, new guy. We need to get some height, because they move the move the containers around a lot. We gotta know what the route looks like before we run it. So, your first lesson, gaining a rooftop. Follow me, if you can. If not, take the fire-escape." She springboards from a pallet of stuff to the top of a truck, onto an over hang, shimmies up a pipe latches onto some kind of random metal box hanging off the wall, and uses it to swing herself up onto the roof of this warehouse.

    "Your turn!" She shouts back.

    (3x5 and 2x8 on Agility)

Having seen her do it, and already pretty aware of how to move yourself, you basically repeat from memory her moves, and while you're not quite as fast or as fluid as she is, you manage to follow the route, and gain the roof. "Damn, new blood." Karla says. "I wasn't expecting you to actually do it. Most of us bust our ass first time out like that." You manage a bit of a smirk. "I'm a little quicker on the uptake than most." You wheeze a bit. Wow, you are more winded than you thought.

The four of you walk to the far side of the roof, and look out at the vast dockside maze of shipping containers and cranes and warehouses. Karla shades her eyes a bit, and scans the area. "Alright, I'll lead. New blood, just focus on following me. We'll cross the containers back to Julio. If you fuck up and fall, and you don't break anything, you're just gonna have to catch up."

(You may say to make a Mind+Navigation roll, to add the roll's highest width in dice to your Agility test. And, as always, be aware of Willpower and Relationships, if you want more dice that way)

    (Your Coordination has increased!)

You watch where Karla is looking and pointing. In your head, you calculate the route at the speed of thought, and can see where its going, and exactly what structures to cover to get there.

She sets off first, and you wait a few seconds to see where she goes, as she jumps to a stack of containers only slightly lower than the lip of the roof, and goes off, moving from container to container. You set off after, moving at your fullest speed, your highly tuned reflexes guiding you almost instinctively, first in Karla's footsteps, then actually pulling out ahead of her, as you see the route you need to take. You gradually decrease the height off the ground, before snatching an out-of-use crane hook and swinging down so skid to a halt, next to Julio and the message runner from before. "Damn." Julio says, quietly.

(Also, not spending any willpower because I already made the roll, and Dan rolled awesome)

You take a couple seconds to get your breath back. Which is way easier than it was a week ago. Then turn to grin, as Karla and the other two runners catch up. "That was fun." You observe, to Julio, not quite edged down from your adrenaline high. "But when do we do the hard courses?" He laughs, good and hard. Then he turns to a burly man who must be his brother, and takes a phone back from him. Karla is looking at you with something between pride and hate, while the other two just gawk. "Said I was quick on the uptake." You're going to be sore tomorrow, but right now, you are not giving a single fuck. Julio turns back to you. "Say you got the basics down, homes. You're free to run with us any times. I'd say you're up for the big leagues." "Big leagues?" You ask. "Downtown." Julio says simply. Right, the place with the TALL buildings, and stuff. A hard die is a die you don't roll, you just declare it to be whatever you feel like before you roll. People usually declare it a 10. A wiggle die is one that you declare AFTER you roll, basically guaranteeing a set. They are very powerful tools. They don't add much power to your character, but they add a TON of reliability.

Hard dice are never rolled, and they always count for 10, meaning they're for power.

Wiggle dice you set aside, and declare the value after your roll. In theory, this makes you better at called shots, or able to meet height or width requirements. In practice, I'll probably usually use them either to add to the width of your highest match, or to make you have a match if you fail. Hence why we're saving wiggle die for real heroic shit.

Time for a walk on the spooky side.

Without too much trouble, you find Blackstone's office. The door is open, so you politely knock on it as you enter. Harry looks up from his desk, where he's shuffling papers, then smiles a little. "Ah, glad you could join me, hoss. Sit down, if you don't mind." You walk in, and look around the room. If you had to guess at what a wizard-professor's office look liked, this would be it. He has a pair of bookshelves, filled with leather-bound journals, and manuscripts, and ancient, slightly moldy tomes. He actually has a small scroll rack in one corner, almost every slot filled with a rounded roll of paper. On top of the rack is a glass case which contains a couple human skulls, one of which is pitch black, and another has a hodge-podge of arcane symbols etched into it. He has a pair of candle holders on his desk, a rainbow of melted wax on them, but currently holding some deep, black candles, which smell slightly of chocolate. He has what at first looks like a mini-bar, but you realize none of the shit in those vials, bottles or beakers is alcohol. On the same wall as the door, there's another glass case, which you recognize from your time spend in museums is armored, which contains a slightly dirty, long, leaf-bladed sword you recognize as Celtic. The words that cross your mind are 'no fucking way'.

He chuckles wryly. "Well, got that part down, kid. That's actually one of the first things I teach in my classes. Humanity is quite frankly better off not knowing how much stuff is out there in those shadows. But I was talking about me, right?" He sighs. "Wont', can't tell you everything. The whole story will have to wait until I'm dead, which'll be real soon or long time from now. But, to give you as much as I can, I was young when I first came into my power, about Anya's age, but much stronger. Like most kids would, I used my powers for dumb stuff. Speed up chores, impress girls, get my way at school. It's this kind of reckless shit that brings out all the bugaboos and bogeymen which prey on the magi. Luckily, it also brought me to the attention of the good guys, and the man who later taught me how to do right with magic was there to pull my bacon out of the fire." He reaches under his collar, and pulls out a gold medallion on a chain, with the symbol of a pentacle, with an eye embossed in the middle. "Know what this is?"

The pentacle represents magic in control of man. If the eye is within the magic, then that means that god is in magic AND in control of man.
The elder beings from beyond time and space could conceivably have been worshiped as gods, and thus the eye would represent elder things under the control of man.

You ponder deep in your brain. "I recognize the pentacle..." You say, thoughtfully. It's a commonly accepted symbol representing magic, especially in the western tradition, much like how crosses or jesus fish are symbols of Christianity. It's also a basic protective ward. The eye means something though. You remember something from a book once. "I have a name, 'Seekers of the Arcane', but I don't remember any more than that." You admit.

"Got it in one, grasshopper." He puts the medallion away. "The Seekers have been around a long time, at least since the Roman Republic. They say they trace back to Atlantis, but we both know that's a load of BS guys like you an me made up to describe meta-empowered pre-Classical civilizations around the Med. This is like my secret club decoder ring." Sometimes its hard to tell when he's serious. "The Seekers are dedicated to understanding the secrets of magic, and using them for the betterment of mankind, usually by standing between mankind and the bug-eyed monsters in the spaces between spaces that want to eat all our souls. And, for a long time, I was an active member. I am 'in-active' now, they don't let you retire, but I decided to get off the frontline, and teach young men and women who, like you, ended up with a foot in something more dangerous than they could imagine. I take it upon myself not just to watch over you, but to guide you to watching yourselves. It's why I work with Anya, and why I persuaded Jeanne's family to let her come here. Seekers don't normally tutor outsiders."

Not just to look out for you, but to equip you to look after yourself. But as noted, sometimes knowing more doesn't help." He gives you a considering look for a long second.

"Well, padawan, since you have yet to run out of here screaming to get away from the Wizard, nor punched me in the face, let's get down to brass tax. "Sticking to your guns? Don't say I didn't warn you." He almost sounds happy, though. "Don't mind me if I get a bit philosophical here." He stands, and begins to pace. "Strictly speaking, magic is something everyone has. It is a force all life forms, even those from beyond our Earth, hold inside them. Did you know a couple of the Cyrean Empire's conquests had magic traditions, before the Cyrean's stamped them out? But I digress. Magi are simply born with an excess of this force, and an innate talent to wield it, and to shape it in tune with the primal forces of this universe. No more different than some folks who are born to have big muscles, or born to be real smart."

He stops pacing, and sits back down. "So, Alice, I'm saying that anyone, with a little help, can do a little magic. If you're prepared to see how deep this rabbit hole goes, I have some options for you." He taps the blank notebook. "First step to being a honest hedge wizard is knowing some rituals. Technically speaking, anyone with a mind, and the right focusing materials, IE, magic symbols, foci and material components, can learn and do ritual magic. However, at least the traditions I come from, it's a big faux pa to just hand an aspiring Occultist a full book. You have to write it down on your own, and understand it all on your own. I can teach you some basics, and so can the books in the library, but you need to learn at your own pace, if you're fine with that."

"But, if that's not enough for you, there are a couple other routes." He taps the treatise. "Easiest way to get powers you don't have is to call up someone who does to loan 'em to you, like your friend 'Red'. She's dealing with some powerful and nasty forces, though. Obviously, the binding and summoning of demons is illegal, if only because it makes it slightly harder for the average joe to poke his nose in, and make a bad deal. Anya's lucky she was a minor, and her deal resolved pretty quickly. But there are other forces, spirits and things, which can be called upon to aid you. For a price. Always for a price. These can be short or long term. And when I say "long term" I mean it. Summanus' family got their abilities by making a deal with a powerful elemental of air a long time ago. I normally don't advise this route, but you're smart, and you've got power enough on your own to stand your ground."

He raps the bare knuckles of his left hand on his desk. "Or I have a third option. A little trick the Seeker's taught me."

"I'd like to know all my options before making a decision, sir." Professor Blackstone smiles sourly. "As I said, everyone has that force in them to be a Magus. It is part of them. Most humans just don't have enough stuff to naturally work with it. Others, like Huan, carefully through meditation and disciplined study tap those wellsprings, but not for true magic. The Seekers aren't as many now as they once were. History wasn't always kind to practitioners. So, I know a little spell to 'deputize' normal humans who have exceptionally strong wills, or wellsprings of inner strength. You'll never by like Jeanne or Anya. Okay, basically, Rituals, anyone can do. You'll have a ritual book, and so you'll have a list of Rituals you know, and you'll roll Mind+Occult to do them. They cost Willpower (for everyone) and have some other set up requirements for them, but have various effects related to the ritual. Also, you can pad that willpower cost some. (Eg, if you have a Willpower cost of 3 for a big ritual, get three ritual casters, and it costs them 1 WP).

Pacting with some kind of powerful entity, such as a Nature or Elemental spirit will give you access to specific Miracles (power) which function like your current Psi powers, no additional cost, beyond what you negotiate with your Patron.

If you let Harry unlock your power as a Mage, you can cast any sort of spell from a school of magic, basically opening you up to building new Miracles that are magical. But, all your magic has an ingrained Willpower cost, since unlike a born Magister, you don't have that excess of magical force that you can sling around. Like how in the books, Dresden gets tired after two many big evocations? That's you, only all the time.

True, and at the same time we have already the Cyrean thing going on... Or was what Blackstone saying was that Cyrean tech is similiar in function with what Mages do?

If we aren't going for all three for time constraints, I'll also go for pact. Social Link & Mentor bonus, and trading-favors is always a good plot hook.

Depends on who you call. If you reach deep into whatever pale realm dead guys go when they die in comic books and call up some old ghost, they might be actively helpful. Or you might just ring up some kind of totemic spirit and be like "Coyote, give me your powers of Troll". And coyote would be all "K, but you have to fuck with people, and if you don't takin' mah powers back."

The specific suite thing is correct, though, mechanically speaking. The Pact is a Source for one or more Miracles with specific effects. Like Pyromancy or something.

Okay, I think we're ready for the story to progress now. Let's get the full package, and then TO THE LIBRARY. We should also talk to our club friends who have pact magic. They can probably offer some helpful advice. Oh, and we should ask Harry if he can refer us to any good psychic tutors.

    (Time 4 Phenomenal Cosmic Power)

You rise. Blackstone Rises too. "Made your decision?" He asks. You nod. "I want to have the fullest arsenal possible." You state, calmly. "Good man." He places is bare palm on your forehead and says "Evigilare."

White light floods your vision. It feels like its flooding your body, your very existence. Blackstone's spell is a spark which kindles a fire inside you. The sensation reminds you very much of Eve shoving you full of glowing alien nanotech. Only that was lightning, and this is fire. You drop to your knees, breathing heavily. "Don't say I didn't warn you." You feel like you're lost in a storm for a second, then you find focus. All it takes is a couple words.

    BEHOLD THE WIZARD.

    Command has increased!

Psychic Senses has become "Magesight"! In addition to detecting psychic phenomena and auras, you can now behold magical shit directly.

You've gained the "Evocation" Miracle. By spending a point of Willpower, you may call upon the fundamental forces of nature for an effect. This has the 'Operational Skill' Extra, meaning you roll its pool, plus you Knowledge (Occult) dice.

You are now an awakened magus, so you can learn additional schools of magic through study and training.

You have gained a point of Willpower for Self-Improvement, AND invested another point of Base Will in Self-Improvement.

You rise triumphantly to your feet and bellow, "Behold the Wizard!" then you get light-headed and stagger, catching yourself on the desk. "Easy Alice." Says Blackstone. "Here, let me get you a little pick me up." He rummages under his desk. At first, you suspect some kind of mystical potion, but then he pulls out two frosted mugs, and two beers. Which is way better.

"Another off-duty Seeker I know brews this. She's a witch in Canada. Spends her time warding off Wendigos and Gnoph-keh and mutant killer snowmen. But she still homebrews some damn fine beer." He pours yours first, into the mug, then his own. He lifts his mug in a toast. "Welcome to the spooky end of the pool, grasshopper." You drink.

You have discovered Amrita. That sweet ambrosia of the Gods. Apparently Canadian witches make it.

The other day, I decided to go ask /x/ what they thought about the Red situation and how we might deal with it. I guess now would be a good time to share:

1.) Cut her off from power source and hope that she doesn't have much of an internal battery of power; A.K.A. Cold Turkey method.
2.) Ruin all Arcanomath on her body via scars, may have to use fire; A.K.A. Extra Crispy method.
3.) Beat her into mist form, then bust out a dyson vacuum; A.K.A. Ghostbusters Method
4.) Travel into her mind and kick demon's ass out of there; A.K.A. Psychonaut Method
5.) Obtain and use several gallons of holy water; A.K.A. PURGE Method
6.) Find and use a Dr. Moreau failsafe against her; A.K.A. Cheating.

    >1.) Cut her off from power source and hope that she doesn't have much of an internal battery of power; A.K.A. Cold Turkey method.
Might work. Her powers are based on the Pact system you guys were interested in. She would be cut off from her miracles if you could block whatever transdimensional telegragh line she has.
    >2.) Ruin all Arcanomath on her body via scars, may have to use fire; A.K.A. Extra Crispy method.
Would work. She'd have to do it all long hand without the tats.
    >3.) Beat her into mist form, then bust out a dyson vacuum; A.K.A. Ghostbusters Method
Not so cool. Mist form was the the Champion, not Red. Also, it was super caustic, if you'll recall.
    >4.) Travel into her mind and kick demon's ass out of there; A.K.A. Psychonaut Method
Not possessed. Kind of. But you could talk to it directly, there. If you wanted.
    >5.) Obtain and use several gallons of holy water; A.K.A. PURGE Method
Outsider, so those rules don't work.
    >6.) Find and use a Dr. Moreau failsafe against her; A.K.A. Cheating.
Dr. Moreau is her own failsafe.

Well of course we have Roxane, but Justinian is the one who is COVERED on that front. Literally just covered in bitches. I believe the elf he pummeled into waifuhood was the third iirc, and he didn't stop there.

But you're right of course, the harem is looked down on in this particular society. And by Roxy, probably.

Whatever the case though, let's not ask Blackthorn for advice on the matter. Dresden doesn't seem to pick up on hints until they're actually dry humping him.
