PRELUDE

It's a bright day in Sunnydale Park - the birds are singing, the bees are buzzing, and crime is at an all-time low!

Two fishermen sit patiently at the Koi pond, swapping stories.

(For today's battle, I covered my table in some cheap green paper and penned in some streets and such. I am severely lacking in base plates, but at least we have some buildings!…)

Everyone's enjoying their day at the park - despite there being an escaped gorilla on the loose. At least it makes for an interesting news story. Come down from that tree, dammit!

Meanwile, the LARPers (holding their bi-weekly gathering at the park) practice their skills and show off their equipment to terrified passersby. Steve the Pirate, as always, flaunts OSHA regulations by bringing fireworks and a functioning flintlock rifle to the event.

Two monster-cosplayers and a member of the King's Archers club kick back for refreshments in the shade.
"Good grief… and I thought my dragon costume last time was hot!"
"You think chainmail is any better?"
"Honestly, I wouldn't know. I'm allergic."

"…Wait, you SHOT at him? With a loaded gun?"
"With 200 bucks on the line? Of course! Everybody knows gunpowder beats plate any day!"
"But - but didn't you say you were drunk?"
"Aye, we had to use a tripod to keep his hands from shaking. He hit me dead in the chest, but I still won the bet."
"You people are insane!"

Farmer Bob suffers from a variety of anxiety disorders, but still compulsively forces himself to go outside. Poor guy.

Far from the commotion, Little Timmy digs innocently in the sandbox, letting his imagination run wild with a substance that's barely a step above mud. But wait - what's this hidden in the sand?

It's so shiny! Wowee!

Suddenly, the crystal hums in Timmy's hand, vibrating with eldritch energies… dark whispers echo from nowhere as the ground begins to shake!

Holy smokes! The dead are rising from the earth! Apparently, nobody remembered that Sunnydale Park was built over an ancient medieval battleground. It's also cursed. And probably haunted. You think people would remember this kind of thing.

Run for your life, Timmy!

"Breaking news! It seems that skeletons are emerging from beneath Sunnydale Park! They appear to be armed, dangerous, and hell-bent on… oh crap, where's my cameraman! RUUUNNN!"

"Holy crap! I'm so scared I dropped my helmet!"
"If we make it out of this alive, I am going to church. I want my money back."

"Don't just stand there, you idiots! This is what we've been training for our whole lives! TO ARMS!"
"B-b-but I just joined last month!"
"Cut the bullshit and put on your bull-suit, you pansy!"

Suddenly, the ground shakes and a circle of fire emerges from cracks in the earth!…

*SKA-DOOSH!*

With a hellish whinny, a Skeletal Horse and carriage are summoned, mounted by a Skeletal Captain and a scythe-wielding Grenadier!

Left with no other choice, the LARPers form ranks and prepare to do battle with the fiendish army of the dead! Who will win this wicked confrontation? Has Hell finally come to earth? How many of the civilians hiding behind the green ATM have shit themselves in terror? Have a seat, grease up your F5 key and get ready to find out!

SKELETONS TURN 1

The skeletons advance, brandishing their spears fearsomely. The cosplayers are first into the fray!

Manta-Man manages to fell a Skeletal Spearman, but is gored in return. Oh, the tragedy! In retrospect, latex rubber is very poor body armor.

LARPERS TURN 1

Filled with in-character fury, the Minotaur beheads a skeleton as one of the King's Archers nails another with a crossbow bolt. The Archer Captain spars skillfully with another Skeleton.

Thinking quickly, The Blacksmith puts his axe to good use and fells a tree, dropping it on the Skeletons! Pirate Steve reaches into his backpack and grabs his lighter...

"Fire in the hole!"

The fireworks set the tree ablaze! A few Skeletons are consumed by the flames, but the battle is far from over.

Putting their amateur acrobatics to use, the Fucking Weab - err, Ninjas backflip into their extra-large Jeep and start it up.

SKELETONS TURN 2

The Skeletal Samurai slash their way out of the burning foliage, and other skeletons behind them stand back up.

The Spearmen push over the Minotaur, knocking back the Archers as well! The Minotaur and the Archer Captain are summarily speared. Here's hoping one of the useless civvies remembered to call an ambulance…

A surly Skeletal Samurai slices Steve's flintlock in two! Damn, that's sharp!

With a maniacal cackle, the Grenadier lets loose with his miniature catapult. Wahaha!

Sadly, he overshoots… and finds his munitions aren't quite up to snuff.

Policeman Dave and Officer Fido arrive on the scene in a police buggy! Will they be able to restore law and order, or will they have to call for chopper backup? One only hopes the rest of the force arrives soon…

LARPERS TURN 2

The Ninjas plow through the undead army with their jeep, smashing four skeletons to pieces - including one Samurai. Their wheels jam, however, as bones wedge themselves into the undercarriage.

The Ninjas kick-flip their way out of the car…

…and beat back the Skeletal Axeman and Archer! Unfortunately, they can't land any killing blows with their spray-painted rake handles.

The other LARPers spar valiantly, but land no killing blows.

SKELETONS TURN 3

The Skeletal Samurai continues his assault and severs Steve's left hand! That's a LOT of blood.

Admittedly, this is my fault, as the last few reports I photographed just weren't good enough to post here. Fortunately, I learned from my mistakes and was able to make this one much higher-quality.

The two Reapers strike in sync with their sharpened scythes, but the Swordsmens' armor protects them - by taking the brunt of the blows and being rendered useless. Behind them, a Spearman prepares to hurl his weapon!...

"Yikes!" Farmer Bob somehow manages to parry the perilous projectile with his pitchfork.

The Ninjas continue their battle - one has his staff cut in half, while the other dodges both axe and arrow!

Unhitching from the carriage, the Skeletal Captain advances and takes a potshot at Policeman Dave! He ducks, and Officer Fido absconds.

The Skeletal Cyborg (wait, what?) climbs the statue to plant the black flag - and uses his Axe-Gun to take aim at one of the Archers!

"Holy smokes!" The Archer's helmet is knocked clean off by a laser blast. How the hell do they have a laser? Nothing makes sense anymore!

Meanwhile, across the park, an eerie figure alights upon a building…
"This is Agent Falcon… the readings were right! Someone activated the Warp Crystal too early… We only have one chance to open the warpway!"

Flying down with the aid of his propellor-pack, the stranger approaches the power station…

…and plants a mysterious glowing device on it!

A bolt of lightning blasts forth from the power station as the dynamos overload!

More lightning crackles in the air, opening a warpway portal!

Out steps… an Alien Tripod! The invasion has begun! Can our law-abiding citizens hope to defeat this ominous otherworldly menace?

More aliens pour out of the Warpway before it falters and closes.

Just in time, the Police arrive! Officers Stan and Matsumoto drive up in their Squad Genericars - the fastest and most dangerous wheels 200 dollars can buy! Sheriff Beardley, on the other hand, rides in style in his Squad Futuricar.

"Alright, boys - hope you practiced plenty at the firing range. This looks like it'll be a doozy!"
"Yes sir!"
"Hai!"

Sadly, Officer Matsumoto is still taking remedial English courses. He's also a loose cannon who's had to turn in his gun and his badge multiple times due to anxiety attacks… but he's a good cop. Honest.

Meanwhile, the fishermen are… wait, what? They're still fishing?! What kind of insane nutters sit and FISH during not one, but TWO otherworldly invasions?!

LARPERS TURN 3

The meleé continues! The Swordsmen spar with the Reapers, distracting them just long enough…

…for the Dwarf and Samurai to charge forward! The Dwarf manages to cleave a Reaper in twain with his mighty battle-ax.

A die-hard to the end, Steve the Pirate feebly attempts to throw more fireworks before passing out due to blood loss. He forgot to light the stupid thing.

The entire gang gangs up on the remaining Reaper and beat him to pieces.

Meanwhile, the Ninjas continue their battle! Bereft of his useless stick, one ninja gets the bright idea to use his trusty rusty crowbar (for the Half-Life LARP later that evening). He manages to snap off a skeleton's arm!

SKELETONS TURN 4

Rolling with the blow, the disarmed skeleton tumbles under the carriage and snatches a flintlock rifle. Unfortunately it'll take him a while to figure out how to load and fire the damn thing with only one arm…

Meanwhile, the Skeleton Archer takes aim…

And shoots one Ninja in the back, snapping the other out of his battle Zen.

"Oh no! Not you too, Paul!"

Unfortunately, battle Zen is pretty crucial to not dying. Reapers gonna reap.

The Cyborg Skeleton descends from his perch, scattering the mob of LARPers! Sparks fly as his chainsaw (seriously, where did he get that?) clashes with the Dwarf's shield. In the shrill confusion, a Spearman runs through the Blacksmith by aiming just below his armor. Oh, the humanity!

Policeman Dave hits the reverse gear to address the alien issue - meanwhile, Officer Fido attempts to take a bite out of crime!

He is promptly shot.

Skeletons are not nice guys. They shoot dogs. They'll probably knock over your mailbox and throw bricks through your window, too, if they run out of dogs to shoot.

I used the same settings for all the shots; 1600x1200, flash off, close-up mode on. It's a cheap old Olympus camera, hence some of the lighting inconsistencies. The real treat was the mini-tripod, however.

POLICE TURN 1 (Game turn 4)

The cops roll up, grab their guns and prepare to dispense some justice! Suddenly, as Officer Matsumoto surveys the gore and terror of the battlefield, something about the profusion of dead bodies and walking dead triggers his PTSD *again*. Poor guy.

"HORY CRAP! YOU KIRR PEEPER? FAKKU DIS SHITTU! YOU UNDA ARREST!"

When the smoke clears, the perps are K.I.A…. Mission accomplished. God bress Americurr.

One of the Swordsmen (acting out of turn) leaps into the jeep, attempting to start it and dislodge it from the pile of bones it's stuck in!

…Wait, no, what? There's an advancing alien army marching down the street. The day is not saved yet. Not by a long shot. Get a grip, photographer. Sheesh.

ALIENS TURN 1 (Game turn 4)
As the army marches forward, the Tripod Walker blasts the front of the Swat Van with its beam laser. Fortunately, Swat vans are more heavily armored than a nun's chastity belt. The laser does manage to scratch the paint, however.

LARPERS TURN 5

Inspired by the courage of his fellow Asian, the Samurai hefts his sword aloft and fills himself with righteous fury!

"This sword of mine glows with an awesome power! Its burning grip tells me to defeat you! Take this - my love, my anger and all of my sorrow! SHINING-"

"-KATANAAAAAA!"

*KA-SHWINNNNNNNNG!*

The Cyborg Skeleton is summarily smote.

"You were a worthy opponent, Skeleton-san."

Just between you and me? Samurai is a huge fucking weaboo.

One of the archers (having grabbed a spare helmet) finally manages to take down a skeleton! About time, you lazy sod!

Huzzah! The Dwarf charges across the sandbox and beheads the would-be Reaper. Revengeance for the dead Ninjas!

Seeing a golden opportunity to put his genre savvy to work, a cowardly Swordsman hops into the police car and locks the door.
"Skeletons can't get me in here, man! I'm safe! I'M SAFE!"

He proceeds to huddle like a little girl for the rest of the battle.

After a bone-crunching K-turn, the Swordsman picks up Farmer Bob and heads off to hide behind the Swat Van.

SKELETONS TURN 5

Rightly fearing the Dwarf's martial prowess, the Skeletal Archer hops aboard the carriage and preps the catapult…

*SPROING!*
He launches himself up to a tree for a better view.

"You spineless cowards - you miserable bags of bones! Pick yourselves up and sally forrhrh…. *crick* Sally forrrhrh…. *CRICK* Sally forth."

For all his other qualities, one thing entitles the Skeletal Captain to his rank - the ability to talk his jaw off. Anyway, he makes a mounted charge! Somehow he ignores the Dwarf, mistaking him for a decorative lawn gnome.

ALIENS TURN 2 (Game turn 5)

Undeterred, the Monster Truck grabs a nearby tree and attempts to bash the Police Droid! Fortunately, the Police Droid is no weakling, and grapples the sapling!

Pew! Pew! Laser blasts sunder a SWAT shield, but this simply frees up a hand for an extra gun. Convenient!

Upping the ante, the Tripod attempts to stomp-stab the second Police Droid with its bladelike leg… only to find, once again, that Police Droids are pretty damn strong.

LARPERS TURN 6
Farmer Bob helps the Archer hitch a ride on the Jeep on their way to the SWAT Van.

"Uh, guys… wouldn't it make more sense to *leave* while we're still not dead?"
"Not yet. I've got a plan."
"…A plan? Bob, tell me he's kidding."
"I don't think he's kidding."
"We're all gonna die, aren't we?"
"Yyyyup."

The Dwarf is stunned briefly. Officer Stan to the rescue!

With this casualty, the Skeletons have only one Archer on the field… but since he doesn't seem to be shooting at much of anyone (or at least not landing any shots), the Skeletons appear to be defeated - for now!

With the Skeletons neutralized, Sheriff Beardly whips out his walkie-talkie to radio air support.

"Landing zone is clear for medevac - hurry it up up there!"

*whupwhupwhupwhupwhup*
Here comes the Police Chopper, carrying a medical stretcher for the wounded LARPers!

Working quickly, the Sheriff and Officer Matsumoto pile as many wounded as they can into the stretcher. Some creativity is needed to fit them all in… off to the hospital, then!

Meanwhile, across the park, Police Droid wrests the tree away from the Monster Truck…

…and throws it in the driver's face, knocking him off!

"Yanno, Zorblax, maybe marching in on foot wasn't the best idea."
"What's the matter, Sklerb? Afraid their little pellet-shooters will-"

It looks like the aliens CAN bleed. And if it bleeds, the SWAT team can blow its head off and claim self-defense later. The other Alien troopers make a run for cover!

ALIENS TURN 3 (Game turn 6)
Pew, pew! Proving their lasers are no less deadly, two Aliens blast one of the Police Droid's arms off!

An Alien lays down supporting fire (read: can't shoot for shit) as another helps the stunned driver to his feet. The Grabuloids skitter across the field, eying the SWAT team's noggins hungrily!

With a screeching roar, the Tripod seizes a Police Droid in its fearsome jaws! Is it a machine - or a monster? Alien stuff is so damned confusing!

Now that we're a little over halfway through the battle report, can I get a viewer count while I go grab a snack? I'm eager to see how many people are enjoying the thread so far.

Old skeletons were made for "limp pile of bones laying on the ground". New skeletons are for undead. They still make both kinds afaik.

The LARPers pull up by the SWAT van and hop out next to the restaurant.
"What are you doing hiding, you cowards? These punks aren't dangerous at all - come on out and help us fight!"
"Uh, he *did* see like seven of our friends get practically murdered by skeletons, right?"
"Yea, but *they* didn't."
"He's still crazy."

The Swordsman's diplomacy is successful! An Angry Mob joins the fray!
"Is he serious?"
"Apparently."
"This is completely bonkers!"

The Dwarf and Samurai charge into battle!

*WHA-CHUNK!* One severed Alien head, coming right up!

POLICE TURN 4 (Game turn 7)

Having successfully evacuated the wounded, the police hop back in their cars and drive around to flank the Alien menace!

Meanwhile, scared civilians huddle behind the wind-powered ATM, an ecologically friendly feature of the park that also serves as a great hiding place for when you're hyperventilating and terrified. Fortunately, the cameraman hasn't stopped rolling this whole time - at least it'll make for good news!

The SWAT team guns down the Grabuloids with extreme prejudice. Looks like they bleed orange, too.

Wrestling to level its gun at the alien pilot, the Police Droid obliterates the Tripod's cockpit shielding and frees itself from the robo-beast's clutches! However, what goes up must come down...

*CRUNCH!* The Police Droid gently breaks its fall by shattering the Jeep's windshield.

ALIENS TURN 4 (Game turn 7)

Stepping backward, the Tripod points its beam skyward and re-activates the warpway portal!

Out steps… a human? Yes, the Evil Scientist has betrayed humanity and joined forces with the Aliens! Who'd have guessed? With her rocket launcher and a detachment of Traitoroids, it looks like the defending forces are in for some trouble!

The Aliens help their driver back into the Monster Truck, which promptly attacks! Police Droid blocks the attack, but a second Alien's ray gun destroys the SWAT cop's body armor! One more shot and he's done for…

Deposing the late Policeman Dave, an Alien attempts to hijack the Police Buggy before realizing he has no idea how to drive the damn thing. How embarrassing!

LARPERS TURN 8

The Alien deftly dodges the Dwarf's axe attack!
"Hah! You missed, tiny human!"

"That's what you think, greenie - WHIRLWIND ATTACK!"

*SCHWINNG!* The Dwarf brutally bisects the Alien, and knocks over his comrade!

The Samurai gives the carjacking Alien a swift kick to the… face. I'm not so sure how alien jaw anatomy works. Whatever, he falls off the buggy.

With profuse apologies and a bit of heavy lifting, Police Droid clears the way for the advancing Jeep.

"Onward, men! To victory!"
"Onward to what now?"

"There - fire at the gruesome green invader!"
"Fine, but don't expect any miracles…"
*TWANG!*
