    3 KB Evolution Moon from Aether !GuYmUwz4mI 03/22/12(Thu)14:21 No.18418103
Welcome /tg/, to a special edition of the Evolution game. This time with a bit more of a sci-fi feel.

The rules are simple. Take one of the 3 creatures and alter it in paint. You can add any sort of limbs, sensory organs, locomotion, ect. (please save as .PNG).

We start with the trit. A small organic organism which moves about on 3 legs. It has a retractable mouth and strange sensory organs on its head.
    >> from Aether !GuYmUwz4mI 03/22/12(Thu)14:24 No.18418127
         File: 1332440674.png-(3 KB, 264x165, Humell.png)
    3 KB
Next we have the Humell. A once-mammal that coats the surface of the moon like a blanket. It provides a food source for the Trit and feeds off radiation and basic minerals. It is very short and grows in flat bodies known as cells, with each cell having its own brain.
    >> from Aether !GuYmUwz4mI 03/22/12(Thu)14:28 No.18418168
         File: 1332440918.png-(2 KB, 311x235, yu.png)
    2 KB
Lastly we have the 'yu' - a jelly-like creature. It secretes a strong acid to burn away the rocks and minerals and feed off them. It possesses minimum intellect and tends to absorb what it eats/walks over.

I should also mention that all these creatures inhabit a moon with a very small atmosphere. Gravity is weak and there is very little in the way of food aside from minerals and light fungi.

I ask that when you alter a creature, you say weather or not it replaces the old species or is a splinter-race.

    explain?

You can 'evolve' whenever you feel it necessary, though it makes more sense if the other races go first. But, as with the past few threads, it is not uncommon to see a single species evolve multiple times in a row.

But it is generally a good idea to cut down on samefagging.

Not name, same! It's not forbidden, just a good idea not to double/triple post. Keep the trip.

    >"This random event happened! Next round to evolve now!"

When events happen, I expect players to have species react/evolve accordingly, but it is not the only time it's allowed to happen. You can evolve any time you want.

Small holes in the ground begin to emerge and little dark worms begin crawling over the moon. They feed off the fungi and tend to get mixed up in the meal of the 3 main creatures. Something about the composition of the worm doesn't make sense and it starts to transform the species. Roll a D10 for each creature

    1 - Color change
    2 - Elongated body/limbs
3 - Thick skin, slow movement
4 - frail body, fast movement (if humell, pick another mutation)
    5 - larger/more sensory organs
    6 - population explosion
7 - becomes immobile splinter species
8 - gains elemental abilities (electricity, Aether 'space', water 'liquid', fire 'stars', or stone)
9 - become host for worms
    10 - Pick one.

With the dense skin and growing fungal glands the Fungal-Yu is no longer able to move around and maintain energy efficiency. So soon it looses the ability to move and it roots itself to the ground it tried to compensate for this by growing tubes around it body to filter in as much dust and spores from the wind as possible although this might not be sufficient, in the long run the Fungal-Yu may go extinct if the radioactive dust runs out of energy or it becomes unable to supply enough material to its guests. By now it has formed a symbiosis and is completely dependent on the fungus it lost its ability to digest minerals on its own.

One particular crystal forest has a strange formation. When the sun shines it creates rays of light which display a message. It is unknown what it says but the symbol has a haunting presence. The worms flock to this area only when the symbol shines to feed on the ichor of the 'trees'. When they do they grow to massive portions and flee underground.

The worms never return, at-least, not yet. You may choose do practice this ritual, species may roll again on the chart found here; >>18419768 and if they get a repeat mutation they must roll again. Also, make sure to claim what element you are focusing on if you get that roll (same goes for those who did roll, you only get one of the elements).

Any species or subspecies that practices this ritual gains great knowledge and among it - a reassurance that the titanic worms will return.

The Yu species has now successfully integrated itself with the fungal yu species. Isolated pockets of fungal Yu, and clear Yu persist. The Yu can now evolve and compete by separation of their species, separate evolution, and a highly aggressive reintegration period between the two subspecies. Currently the Yu are highly mobile and oppertunistic in behavior, their primative nerve clusters are actually a hybrid nerve/ muscle cell. This allows them a greater deal of locomotion via undulation. The stronger they get, the smarter they get, the bigger they get. The bigger a Yu gets. the less it can rely on its fungal side, and the more it will require active hunting. The Yu are highly cannibalistic.

the Yu evolve by splitting into sub species, then over time they merge back into a single species via consuming each other, thus absorbing new traits. They have a tissue that serves the same purpose as nerves (brain) and muscle. Like muscle it gets bigger with more work. Like muscle, the bigger it gets the more fuel it needs. So Yu start off somewhat plantlike, then as the grow the biggest and smartest of them become predators instead of scavengers out of necessity.

The photohumell have developed light emitting and at will phosporecent veins in their photosynthesis apparatus, allowing for a eerie glow when active. It can be used to very inefficiently transfer energy from one photohummel to others due photosynthesis. A well fed photohummel can save many starving ones by sharing its energy.

Another thing this new apparatus is allows is the coordination over distance of large packs of photoHummel as well as intricate light patterns in competitions and bidding for mates and food sources.

This has brought forth the development of two feeding strategies, a hunting, scout based one, in which one or a small groups go in different directions and then reassemble with the group sharing their energy and findings, with the others then following the most fortunate ones.

The second behaviour is a somewhat mathematical precision of crazing akin to farming harvesters, striping entire tracts of land with uncanny precision of surface basic minerals, before scouting for other places.

The glowing trit species eventually evolve compound eyes, formed as a symbiont bond between the light fungus and the sensory organs. This turns the glowtrit into a creature capable of detecting extremely fast movement, which prevents it from falling prey to the dominant trit species, or cunning Yu that hang from ceilings to ambush them.Their body features also become more aerodynamic, allowing them to perform migrations of long distances through the air.

A subgender of the giant hummel can now retract its arms inside it's cells and pop them back out.

This leads them to hide amongst other giant Hummel packs and await predators to attack witch then are grabbed, drawn inside, positioned in a non-threatening posture and then crushed under its massive weight, to be used as nutrient supplements. A thing that forces the arms to stay with their now dead prey inside to form a vacuum seal until they start to be assimilated.

This allows the Giant Trap Humell to gain a significant energy boost when in combat by pooping all its arms that are internal out and benefiting from the nutrient boost paste of each captured and stored trit, yu or other small Humell of the photo variety

Discovering the maxim of "Safety among your enemies", A variation of the glowtwit, known as the Compound Wasptwit, develops a parasitic tube injection that utilizes the acidic compount found in their bodies to drill a hole into giant humell, and implant eggs into their victim.

The wasptwit only lays its eggs when it is close to death, therefore, it happily presents itself as a meal to the humell, cunningly releasing pheromones or any certain chemical which fools the humell into believing that it is a harmless twit of another species. Once "captured", it begins the implantation procedure of the eggs.

The larvae devours the Humell inside out, forming a natural control for the numbers of Giant Humell.

It has to single out a Trap Humell out of a herd of Giants that all have a predisposition to slap it around silly until they are dead.

Theis means that the only way they can reproduce is by hunting the Giant humells in packs, and hope that there is a Trap Humell in the herd, and have the numbers required to get to it, and not be slapped to death by the others.

Which means that only one or four will ever get to lay their eggs, thus each must lay enough eggs to account for the heavy losses they get for assaulting a Gian humell heard with the intention of getting eaten and killed.

the photohummels have grown contractile apparatus around their marvellous multi-purpose photoable systems, allowing to close them, contract them or extend them to great degrees.

This adaptation allows the photosynthesis to make maximum use of any light, whil at the same time conveying a impressive control over their light generating abilities, allowing a photohumell to be at great lengths from a kindred colony, but aslong as it is in visual range still maintain contact and relay data to the others from impressive distances and receive them as well, while having a modicum of defence in not blaring their position to would be predators.

The focusing of light allso allows dissemination of energy to other photohummels at greater efficiency , but at only to selected individuals a photoensemble is directed and not only over a entire area.

Thus rendering the original tactic of colonies disbanding into small groups, and exhausting themselves to starvation in scouting runs and return trips, depending on the area energy transmission redundant.

Now it has become more refined. a scout need not return in physicalform. it must only get a direct visual vector to the colony to relay data about grazing grounds or request a energy transfer. Thus it will await them at the location or receive information on how to rendezvous to the new grazing ground.

This same tactic now allows photohumell to have a extensive early warning system around main colony hubs, especial considering the rather covert communication and energy teletransfer as well as the uncanny mathematical coordination developed for mass grazing

Yeah, I felt the same way after I checked this topic again after the majority of that went down. I don't think they quite understood the point of evolutionary steps.

Note to anyone reading this: evolutionary steps are meant to be actually new developments, original changes, not just some unnoticeable detail about how certain spots of coloration have spread, ESPECIALLY not after the exact same thing happened the step before. All of that could easily fit into one single evolutionary step.

To whoever made the family tree picture, I think it would be fine if you just cut out the unnecessary intermediate steps where nothing else was changed.

a gene occurs in 20% of the Trit which causes them to become allergic to many airborne fungi native to the moon. In order to combat this, they grow hard chitinous armor which secretes a natural fungicide. As a result of the growth of their new armor, they lose their gliding membrane and their vestigal back limbs become very short. (this is my first try at this, so ignore it if it sucks)

Due to increased agression from the normally passive hummels, and the Trit becoming the Apex predator of the moon the Yu's became even more cannabalistic. By virtue of size the AlphaYu's overwhelmed and consumed their lesser cousins, absorbing their components in the process. In the aftermath there is now one homogonized species of Yu. Larger and Stronger, the OmegaYu can spew its acidic cytoplasm as a defensive act, as well as rend flesh or stone with its beak. Its eyes merged with its fungal sacs, and the muscle brain is in the process of merging with its plant like elements. There has been a noticeable transition from its mode of locomotion. It now relies on its muscle brain undulating instead of the usual amoeba like motion of its cytoplasm. The Yu are once again ripe for a species division to facilitate the next stage of evolution.

As a result their bodies have grown more muscular (as flying in the light-atmosphere is very difficult), their forelimbs longer and the rear-leg shorter as they spend less time standing.

The Glowtrit have found additional nutrience in the form of Wasptrit eggs imbedded in the skins of the Giant Humells. They have grown a much sharper beak for digging out these eggs and fending off their parents.

    More photohumell love:

with the increasing arms race of the giant humells, Yu's and trits, the photohumell have begun to grow crystalline structures to reflect and focus their light beams even more, allowing for nigh 80% efficiency in energy transfer and great resolution and range to their tight beam projections, as well as a considerable enrichment of their light emission orchestra culture, with multi colour spectra, and pyramid rainbows.

this allows the photohumell scouts touse tier emissions also as a organic LIDAR, of course usd only in groups who alternate the active emissions between themselves and other active groups with a complex algorithm, while lone scouts and other scout groups remain on passive mode and using the crystals only to extend their communication range with the colony.

With the advent of proper tight beam communications a new social variation of the scouts have appeared, in order to maintain communications around obstruction, multiple groups or lone units are used in safe locations to create a mobile, redundant and extensive communication network that has almost all of a photohumell colony members in permanent contact, with only the odd ones preferring to stay out of the network.

the whole light show stuff has become quite the cultural thing. and only few photohumells are willingly out of the network experiece. such evidence are put to good use as dormant passive scouts.

The only way to even get a light beam would be to intercept a comunique to such a one whose lack of scheduled interaction would be queried but not overtly concerned about, since they are not permanent or at least strive to be in permanent link with the network.

    |And the only way to do that is to stalk it , and deliberately target it. more over you somehow must develop FTL sensors in order to know where the laser is going to land before its going to land so you get the first transmission and not interrupt it.

without some serious intelligence, deliberate planing and some evolutions for that express purpose its rather hard to get a photo humell light beam, which is now a integral part of their being and society, which over time has grown quite complex, as you see.

The Vertebrate AlphaYu responds to the increasing predations of the voracious OmegaYu by evolving its jumping tentacles into a special membranous gland which produces a gas lighter than the atmosphere. This allows it to float by varying the mixture of gas in the membrane. It also grows a pseudopod that it uses to fling acidic globs at prey, which it then absorbs.

some fused hummel in one of its reproductive cycles went berserk and ripped their mates into pieces due to a rather disturbing psychological issue, mixing their mating with predatory instincts and starting to mate while at the same time ripping their mate to pieces.

The mate oddly survived reverting to the unfused ancient characteristic of the species, but now becoming slave subunits to the central master unit instead of equal units of a quartet.

with this step fused humells started to mate in a rather aggressive fashion for only once a Humell had this characteristics would it be rendered safe from it itself- as son as they are without a slave unit the aggressive mate-hunting is on .

Thus the mating and predatory instincts become fused in the master subunit of the fused hummel whose tentacles penetrate the ripped slave units in a continuous state of coitus.

These sub units endure everything for the master unit and the contiguous state of coitus. they are used as ablative shielding for the ever sexed and hunting humell, as well as being used as locomotion device, balling the main unit up into a sphere and rolling across the landscape in case speed is needed, for suffering is quite entertaining mid coitus-
the giant Humells dont like that though, the barrelling, they could not care less about fused coitus.

Now the fused coitus will hunt while mating and mate with the slain prey, at least until all its tentacles have a slave unit on them.

photo humells scan them with their LADAR arrays thorough . the newcomer must be assessed and catalogue on the danger list. multiple colonies disseminate the data amongst them to even better analyse the worms and the symbols.

The Photohumells have a rather extensive common map of the worm created shafts and symbols and many recordings of the worms are being disseminated and analysed through multiple networks. the longer the telemetry and the more in depth and close it is , the more is bid on it with other sensations.

even the most reclusive passive dormancy scouts, masters of stealth amongst their kindred are enticed by the large quantity of stories and telemetry offered for the most exquisite scans of live emerging and retreating worms, prompting many a brae scout or scout group to try and get as close as possible for as much time as possible, recording even the trit attack on the worm by scout luzelaqar, one soon to be most rich and afford many mates through reputation alone, and not even having to bid or perform that hard for them, at last as long as the hype is still on.

with some vibration dampening you get some stealth from the predatory giants and dont annoy the sensible , snazzy gentleman and lady giants, who like the quiet, and their concerts.

The increasingly subterranean lifestyle of the Giant humells combined with the emergence of another airborne predator, the Balloon AlphaYu has greatly reduced the number of Glowtrits, though has resulted in some fast changes.

The surviving Glowtrits are larger, feature rows of sharp teeth and bladed wings. The formerly vulnerable wing membranes have become more resistant to the Yu's acid.

photohumells now are able to flatten themselves to a impressive degree, in a very ,very thin membrane , if needed be, by secreting extra fluid in a photorecieving gelatinous mucus among their follicle limbs.

This alows some very gifted photo-humells to glide for a modicum of time and even sail the light , if a colony would give them enough boost, for which one has to barter with a large amount of data, to receive that much light to gain elevation.

This however allows the one attempting such a thing to give contact over elevation and establish direct links to other such daredevils of other colonies, all in all a somewhat profitable investment but at a high data cost.

    The Giant sigil has been laid, and a small spot begins to crumble away. What emerges from the depths is terrible looking from the moon creatures' perspective. It walkes about on 2 legs with multiple arms and seems to be made of the same material as the humell. It begins to speak, and its voice can be heard by all;

"Sorry about my pets. These egregors can only be trusted to carry out my will no matter the cost. Back home now guys."

The worms retreat to the depths one by one and all that stands is the talkative biped.

"You have questions, I'm sure. If your anything like I intended you to be you will not be able to stop asking. No, I did not create you, but I did put you here. Well, if we're continuing ...

The Glowtrits have now developed three distinct genders:

    >The Seeder:
The Largest and rarest Gender, the Seeders do not dwell in flocks like other Glowtrits. They travel across the Moon on long solitary journeys to seek out different flocks and fertilize the Ovary Glowtrits to keep the gene-pool as clear as possible. As they travel alone they must fend for themselves and are by far the most dangerous single creatures in the sky. They use a special horn-like protrusion to announce their presence to potential mates and to intimidate other beasts.

    >The Ovary:
Identical to the previous generation of Glowtrits in terms of abilities, the Ovarys are the most common Gender. As their name suggests they have ovaries and, after their eggs are fertilized by a visiting Seeder they pass the developing Zygotes on the Hosts. Ovarys protect the nests and Hosts from other creatures and hunt for fungus and carrion.

    >The Host:
Unlike the other Genders, Hosts spend most of their time on the ground and have developed padded feet on their three limbs to aid in fast movement. They are capable of flight, but their larger bodies and heavier wing-membranes make them clumsy. The Hosts possess the Womb that holds the Glowtrit young and pass a small part of their genetic material on while doing so. They carry, birth and feed the Tritlings. They possess larger ears, defensive spines and a hook-like beak to aid in the defence of the young.

the fused humell in their rampant rapine have developed inflatable cartilaginous bony spike protrusions at the tips of their tentacles... allowing for the take over of slave units from other dead fused humell, but able only to use them as medieval shields and without the animalistic need to rape for them.
which has prompted them to mostly use other parts of animals as the first layer of ablative shielding. armoured trits are a favoured one.

the better the ablative shielding the more dominant a fused humell is in its pack. The new ablative shielding is unfortunately dead, but slave units moisturise and keep it in a useful state for rolling inside it and as well as providing a compound armour against other fused humells by dint of slave unit and new dead matter units variation.

The spikes are also not to be underestimated. not only do they keep the first layer of dead ablative shielding, they can be deflated and inflated in a various manner of configuration, holding the sheilds intact while also allowing them to form a interesting spear pattern, then deflate and form a wicked multi pronged anchor pattern to stabilize or rip pieces on a prey body depending on anchor configuration and the fused humells wishes.

The shielding does not impact tentacles that much as one would suspect by dint of the slave units usually holding them tight in combat , allowing the tentacles to dart away without the need to hold the ablative armour plates for protection and focus on offensive rapine.

this allows also the photohumell to focus inordinate amounts of light at one hub to be able to boost the light sail at higher efficiency and send messages so far that they are beyond the curvature limit of the moon, making the full power usage of the light impossible without gliders.

The giant humells have streamlined their inner links, allowing for improved dynamics, thus better speed and depth again, but also at the same times as they function as powerful cords and receivers of the echolocation it has again tremendously increased power and range of the echolocation.

This in coordination with the powerful muscle augmented unidirectional sound generation allows the giants to create a powerful blast that shatters hard rocks and irons to fine sand and gravel in front of them.

should a giant be annoyed to much by the sound of surfacers , a directed blast could stun, kill or even cause the explosion into fine mist of the offender.

the giants dont like anyone's ruckus but their own.
    don't make a ruckus.

photohumell scout luzelaqar was attacked by a armoured snake trit.

expending a large amount of data in exchange for large quantities of light it attempted to dazzle it with way too much light.

the recordings are nothing but impressive. the armoured trit just melted entwain into the intense light.

The recording of that feat made scout luzelaqar exponential more richer than what he spent for the requisition.

The Armored Trits have discovered the art of mining!

They seems to be making burrows within various mountains, and are using underground tunnels to get around.

The Basatrits have lost their ability to see with anything but their sonar antennae. In addition they have grown longer talons to help mine stone.

The omega-yu were on the verge of abosrbtion by the alphayu untill they finally shed their membrane sacs and developed tethered harpoon tubes from their vestigial acid spewers. They also sucessfully merged their eyes with their fungus sacs for a 360 feild of view and hyper spectral vision. This was a turning point for them as they could see the AlphaYu were able to effectivly attack and devourer their cousins in large numbers gaining new genetic material to form an advanced skeletal structure. They were not able to capitalize on the modified acid spewer or flight as those were modifications to the membrane sack, a previous evolutions component that was no longer compatible with them. The wasptrist is now on the menu due to the harpoon tubes. the flesh will be eaten.

in other news the omega-yu's evolutionary path of cannibalism of its own kind and of itself for the purpose of assimilation will eventually lead to the incorporation of the fungal sacs into its whole as opposed to a highly modified symbiotic organism.

The new reproductive system has proven very successful, though a few minor changes have emerged.
The Seeders have become even louder, their calls echoing across any part of the moon they inhabit.
The Aerodynamic spines of the Ovary have become another set of flexible wing supports, making the creatures more nimble in the air.
The Hosts have felt the most pronounced changes: They are now better camouflaged against the rocky outcrops of their nests, have grown short sharp nails on their forelimbs and have shed the useless plume on their tail in favour of a grasping appendage, useful for carrying and moving Tritlings.

the basatrits mining is annoying to the giant humells.

they give warnings in the echo thought whenever tey approach hard rocks and irons to stop their burrowing and go around. if the humells are not close enough to issue the warnings bulls tend to use their sonic cannon on them , just enough to rupture internal organs but leave carapace, rock and ore deposits intact.

in the time underground the giant humells have become quite civil, with only bulls in adolescence going topside to hunt , fight and challenge one another. in the depths of the earth contemplation and peace is a must.

any newcomers who break the rules are hindered and punished.

Humells colonies start now a aggressive crystal farming and collecting campaign, and have started the first light forging practices. using armour trit carapace to fashion various art objects or to melt and cool gems continuously to get reflective surfaces, preferably portable.

they also boast previous impressive threat detection and mass farming algorithms that now are safe thanks to the wonder of intense light focusing who now can be extended and provided for to a even greater complexity and safety.

the giant humells dont seem to like you getting close to ore. you tend to bang at it, and have no style. try to discover fine crumbled ore left by bulls in a hurry. but you might need to evolve tougher exoskeleton or something to dig deep.

you could enter a symbiosis with the giants.

learn their language. they are somewhat your level of intelligence, perhaps a bit wiser due to overall age and lack of predation and not as genocidal with predators as the lazer humell. actually not genocidal at all.

they seem to be the chillest guys and galls around.

this way you could persuade them to let large gravel behind. whats for them large gravel is for you boulders.

giant humell fag, hoping to help armour trit fag.
