    Or, Daniel Fortesque is "Psych"

    >Previous Threads:

    PREVIOUSLY, ON METAHUMAN RENAISSANCE:
Dan spent some more time in Regis' shop, the Royal Vault, and decided on buying some items, including a bitching coat and a duffle-bag of holding. After checking what the others were buying, they ran into Professor Blackstone outside the shop, where the main group left, and Dan and Blackstone took a shortcut to Anna's apartment, which Dan investigated. Psychically. Also Magically. Then he experiences a sensory overload and banged his head on a wardrobe and things got dark and gooey.

(Retroactively awarding 2 WP for History for investigating the psychic impression)

You swim back up to full consciousness, your internal reckoning of time figuring you can't have been out for more than a couple minutes. You feel a presence crouches over you, and air is moving past your face. "You alright, kid?" You try and open your eyes to find the source of the voice, but quickly shut them tight again, as your head throbs from the sensory input. You groan something. "What was that?" Says a different voice. You rub your eyes, and slowly open them. As you do, Blackstone stops fanning you with his wide-brimmed hat. "I told you guys not to let me fall and hit something." You mutter darkly. Detective Howard responds, throwing his hands up in the air. "You touched a bed, then you fell over. What do you want from me?"

"What did you see, grasshopper?" Says Blackstone, quietly. You keep rubbing your eyes, trying to get the pretty colored lights out of them. "Just some images. Events that left strong impressions on Anna and her environment for the past couple of days." Blackstone nods. "Heard of that before." He sits up. "Normally, magisters need specialized magic to detect that kind of stuff, but I'm guessing your existing psionic powers helped." You shrug. You really haven't had the time to know what powers do what, exactly. "What did you see?" Asks Philips. You describe the events, glossing over the parts with Dr. M, given that you're not sure its right for you to give out details on Anna's personal life like that. While you do so, Blackstone helps you to your feet. When you mention the part about the circle at the end over the bed, Blackstone looks down at the floor, notices you're standing on a rug, and tells you to stand off it.

A little blurrily, you manage to step off the floor rug, which Blackstone proceeds to pull back, then presses his left hand to the floor, and nods to himself. You don't detect anything more than the feeling of presence and lived-in that you had before, but Blackstone reaches into a pocket and pulls out a small film canister of something. He puts it in his left hand and shakes it up and down a few times. Then he pops the top off and pours it into his right, revealing it to be full of copper filings. Detective Howard says, somewhat tersely, "I hope you're not planning on contaminating our crime scene?" Blackstone doesn't look up as he grips the pile of copper shavings tightly, not allowing any to escape and says "Not contaminating, showing you something you couldn't see before." Then he mutters something over his hand, and slowly lets the copper dust flow to the floor.

Oddly enough, it doesn't flow straight down, but rather spirals out, as if following an invisible ramp, and the copper traces the form of a circle arrayed into the floor, which Blackstone then studies. Something clicks in your still foggy brain. "Hey, isn't that a circle of communion?" You say. Blackstone nods. "Looks like." He turns to look at the detectives before they can ask. "It's a kind of ritual circle used to contact an entity, usually one not on this plane." He turns back to look at the copper ghost of the circle. "If she had a strong enough connection, she could call the Red Star directly this way. Probably how this mess started."

You walk around the image of the circle, and over to the bathroom door. You turn around to Blackstone and say, "Keep it down again, boss. I'll have a look at the other rooms." Then you push the door open, and turn on your sight.

(And all but 2 dice are a match this time.)
    (2x7, 3x3 and 3x9)

Once again, that strange sharp quality snaps into being, showing everything in almost painful clarity. The bathroom seems fairly normal, like much of the place, bigger than the one you have, with an actual tub/shower combination, various toiletries scattered around the room, none of which appear to be missing. Again, certain of them seem clearer or brighter than others, which means that they were used more frequently. The mirror in the bathroom is covered with the psychic ghosts of equations, going back years, much like other similar surfaces. But, looking at the mirror, you also detect other numbers, not part of equations. After studying them for a second, you figure out that these are connected to a fitness regime, such as how much weight Anna lifted that day, for how long, and how many reps of certain exercises or stretches she did. Looking around for more corellation, you notice an electronic floor scale in a corner, which has the ghostly image of footprints on it, which you think is another psychic indent.

Look at the scales and see if you can tell her weight from the imprint. With information like that we could just plain blackmail her not to end the world. Or maybe start shouting it from the rooftops to get her to try and end the world quicker and make mistakes because she's rushing.

Nothing ventures, nothing gained. You crouch down so you have less distance to fall over, and brace yourself, then touch the psychic imprint on the scale.

    (2x5, 2x6 and 3x10 on Stability)

This time, you're ready for it, and manage to prevent the information from overwhelming you. You're also able to have the new data process in chronological order, instead of reversed, so it makes more sense.

First is an image of Anna in boyshorts and a sports bra, you think a number of years ago. She looks much less muscled, and a few pounds heavier. She stands on the scale for a second, frowns down at it, then walks out of your limited field of view and scribbles on the mirror. Flash forward some time later, and you see Anna in the same clothing, but much as you remember her now, with an athlete's build. She smiles at the display this time, and cheerfully writes down a number on the mirror. A couple images from indistinct times flash in, Anna doing various exercises, lifting weights, push-ups, chin-ups, etc. Clearly she spends a lot of time keeping herself fit. Next is an interesting image of Anna reclining in her tub (which is full of bubble bath for some reason, at least it prevents the psychic image from becoming awkward), where she's holding a beer can in one hand, and one of those paperback romances in another. The next images much be must more recent. Anna reading through Dr. M's notebook again, while she brushes her teeth. She finishes and sits down on her toilet to keep reading. She looks up at the scale, frowns, then goes back to studying. Anna admiring hew new tattoos in the mirror. The last image is fairly recent, Anna still having the injuries you gave her in the coffee shop, and she's feverishly scribbling new equations on the mirror. She runs into her collection of fitness number, furrows her brow, shoots an annoyed look over her shoulder at the scale, and simply wipes them aside, and continues her work.

You resume reality with an almost literal snap back, and find yourself back in the sight-illuminated bathroom.

You rub your forehead a bit, but make sure to keep enough focus to keep your sight going. You get up from a crouch and turn back to leave the room, Blackstone is looking in, a little curious. "Nothing major here, boss." He nods and lets you pass. You go back out into the bedroom. Anna's whiteboard wall is back to being all insane, and you can see the imprint on the bed again, though you feel less compelled to interact with it, for some reason. You also see the circle on the floor. It glows with two auras, which you can pick out. One is a core of blue and white flame, wisping faintly over the original impression, which you guess is whatever Blackstone did to make the copper stick to the original outline. The lower impression is blood-red, and crackles faintly, echoing with the energy of the entity contacted with it. Nothing else is different about the room.

Could we try using the circle to talk to Red Star? We could have a competition to see who can tell the other to fuck off more vehemently. Or if we're really lucky it'll tell Anna where we are and she'll teleport here to tell us to get out of her room and then Blackstone can deal with her.
Or we could just go look at the kitchen. See if there's anything weird. Maybe she's a vegetarian bedouin or something.

The copper dust isn't enough to do it, but you could just take your own chalk and retrace the circle, and Dan know the Commune ritual.

However, since Dan doesn't have a direct link, he'd need to actually make it a ritual, like, light some incense, find something to offer to entice it. Or you could just use some of Anna's own candles and say the Red Star's name three times and hope he picks up the metaphorical phone.

"Okay, stop me if this is a really bad idea." You say, looking at the circle, and clearing your magesight. "But can we use this circle to call the Red Star?" Blackstone puts a hand on his chin. "Well, even with the proper components there's no guarantee it'll answer. But you could try. Can't do much worse than give you another head ache just talking. Probably." You raise an eyebrow at that last one, but he just rolls a shoulder in a shrug. "Well, it *is* possibly my last day on Earth." You observe. "Can't hurt, right?" You and Blackstone exchange nods, while the two detectives back up. Blackstone fishes out his film canister, which he uses to pull back all the copper dust. You throw your duffle onto the bed, and fish out your ritual kit from inside, and your piece of chalk from inside that. You then proceed to chalk out the the Commune circle. You sit in it, while Blackstone fishes out his own little incense holder and burns some. "Any advice?" "Make sure you have the name right." Says Blackstone. "A lot of the literature we found was in Arabic," Philips puts in. "Maybe you should try that?" You shoot her a look. "I don't speak Arabic." Both detectives pull out their smartphones. Oh, right. After a second of browsing yourself, you sit cross-legged in the circle, and take deep breaths. "لنجم الاحمر ! النجم الاحمر I summon you! النجم الاحمر I bid you come to me!"

At first, you're not sure if anything has happened. Then you feel an additional presence in the room, and a voice shouts in everyone's minds, FOOLISH MORTALS! HAVE YOU CALLED ME TO BEG FOR YOUR FEEBLE LIVES? ALL THE WORLDS I HAVE CONQUERED, ALL HAVE BEGGED TO BE SPARED... BEFORE THEY FELL! You wince, but are otherwise unmoved by the yelling. You were kind of expecting it. Detectives Howard and Philips both flinch and cover their ears, rather perturbed by the sound, but Blackstone simply braces his staff against the ground and leans on it, and is unmoved, as if resisting a great wind. "Do you have to shout?" He asks. WEAKLINGS! YOU ONLY FEEL THAT I SHOUT, FOR YOUR FEEBLE MINDS ARE TO PATHETIC TO PROPERLY GRASP THE POWER OF MY VOICE! Blackstone looks at you and says, sotto voche, "I think he just has no indoor voice." The Red Star howls in annoyance, a sound like ALL the record scratches. All of them.

That way when he inevitably returns he'll be much less annoying, and competent enough to shock us out of the complacency of our space empire.

"So," You say, slyly, "If I remove your current champion from play, it's unlikely you'll get a new one? Good to know." FOOLISH FOOL! It exclaims, AS IF YOU HAD THE TALENT TO REMOVE MY HERALD. "Given that I've beaten her every time, I'd say its a fair assumption." HAHAHA, THOSE BATTLES ARE NOTHING COMPARED TO MY CHOSEN'S PLAN TO BRING ME TO YOUR PUNY LITTLE BLUE-GREEN WORLD. I DARESAY SHE MAY BE AS CUNNING AS I. A PERFECT CHOICE TO ACT AS MY HERALD FOR ALL THOSE WORLD I WILL CONQUER, WHEN I ARRIVE. Man, is its voice grating. "I don't care what plan she has! I'll beat her and if you come through, well I'll just have to beat you too." You jump to your feet, feeling a little bolder than normal, as the band of invisible force around your upper arm pulses and throbs green. "I'll beat you so bad, this universe *and* yours will forget you every existed!" Blackstone facepalms with his free hand, but it looks like he's smiling while he does it. The Red Star howls again, this time the reverberations of its voice rattling some of Anna's furniture.

HERALD-MIND, I CALL TO YOU! ARISE, STRIKE DOWN THIS WORM WHO DARES MOCK MY MIGHT! You feel a second unseen presence in the room, and Anna's voice speaks out, as if from far away, "Thy bidding, my lord?" You exchange a confused glance with Blackstone, who says "I did know this thing did conference calls." "Hey, Anna." You say cheerily. "Daniel?" She sounds immensely confused. WEAK MORTAL, MY CHAMPION SHALL TAKE THE BONES FROM YOUR FLESH, AND EAT YOUR MARROW. The Red star goes back to ranting randomly. You focus on speaking to Red. "I'm in ur apartment, using ur circle." Anna seems confounded into silence. Clearly, this is not the call she was expecting.

"Say, Anna, doesn't your new boss sound kind of like a professional wrestler?" You say. Anna responds in a heated tone, "Do not insult my Lord so casually, Daniel, he is the ruler of an entire universe. And I can assure you, that if you were to wrestle with him, he will surely defeat you!" You again exchange glances with Blackstone, who looks like he's trying very hard not to laugh. The Detectives would probably be amused too, if not for the fact that whenever the Red Star speaks, its like someone in the middle of the room trying to talk to them with a megaphone. "Now she sounds like a professional wrestler." Says Blackstone. You shrug, and rotate around to talk to the invisible presences in the room. "So, are you really putting your chips on this failure of a cosmic horror?" You say. "Let's not go over old ground, Daniel." Says Anna, "It's such a waste of air now that we're breathing to repeat that argument." You aren't really sure what to say to that, so you remain silent for a moment. "As interesting a strategy as your intrusion is, It won't do you any good. I've removed anything the police left that could help you. And whatever they *do* have," she puts an odd emphasis on "do", "You wont have time to comprehend before it is too late."

While I will not say with 100% certainty, she did not, I will point out that the Police had some hours to photograph all the equations Anna had up on her whiteboard, mirrors, windows, etc, which she erased when she broke back into her apartment.

I will also point out that the notebook prominently featuring in those psychic flashbacks was captured by the police, and is in Blackstone's possession. May be what she was referring to by "not have time to comprehend" at least.

You think for a bit (though it doesn't take you long, you're a quick thinker these days), trying to decide the best tactic. You feel like since you're talking to her, you should try and win her over, but at the same time, pushing the issue too hard will hurt her ego, and she'll lash out. Likewise, if your plan does set her off, she'll probably try and break the connection, if she can, which means you wont have the opportunity to try and get information out of her. Which would be useful, because even if she isn't dead set on the plan, she kind of has to go through with it.

You try and regroup, thinking something less likely to make her angry again, when Anna interrupts your train of thought. "My Lord," She says, speaking to the Red Star, "This is pointless. Break the connection with him, and leave him to flounder." NO! I DEMAND YOU MOVE AND STRIKE HIM DOWN FOR HIS INSOLENCE. I AM A GOD, I BROOK NO CHALLENGE! Your ears a ringing. Good thing after those frequencies burn out, you never have to hear them again. Anna speaks to it again, trying to calm it. "It would be of no use, Lord. He is not alone, and in the confines of my apartment, I will not be able to move as much agility as I am used to. Likewise, I am still recovering from the injuries my body suffered while your Voice was using it as its vessel." Oh boy, she does not sound happy about that last part. "Break the connection, and he can do nothing to delay or distract us further."

You're about to make a parting smartass remark, at least, but then there's a flash of crimson light and a small fountain of sparks, and you scramble back a bit with a surprised "Whoa!" trying to shield your face. When you lower your arms, the communion has ended, and there is a smoking hole in the floor on the edge of the circle, large enough to fit your thumb in. The air smells faintly of ozone. "Well," You say, to the room, "that was climactic."

Sorry we couldn't get to that, maybe next time, but checking the notebook, you would have both had to ask for it out-loud, and also break the plane of the circle, which would have cut the Communion.

Also, it would require there to be another of those Psychic impressions around to get the visuals. You could possibly skim the notebook then roll Knowledge power on it.

Also, thread archived. Please note, next thread will be THURSDAY, not Friday (and in fact, there will be no Friday thread). I kind of wanted to end Act I this week, so I'm going to try and put on my A Game-face next time. Also probably force Dan to take a nap to kill a few hours of the day.
