Now posting the remainder of the battle pasta

Close Range Combat: Melee attacks are determined by your CRC skill. Everything is calculated the same as Ranged Combat, with one exception: there are no critical hits. Instead, damage is determined by the margin of your success using the D10 roll. The higher you score above the targeted number for the roll, the more damage is inflicted. A margin of success of 5 or more is a 'Devastating Blow'. This attack will sheer off enemy equipment and limbs, and more often then not defeat an enemy outright.
Evasion: Sometimes you just want to focus on not taking a Beam cannon to the face. This is when you declare you are taking a fully evasive action. After rolling a D10, you can add the result to your total Maneuver score. However, you can only add points up to the total Maneuverability score of the zoid you are piloting.

    Ask me any questions.

When is the battle going to be with the Sand Strikers?

Talk to Vince, get to know him a bit better. Ask about Eri, let him know that we are interested in her, we're pretty sure she's interested in us and what steps we should take to avoid him ripping our face off should we pursue this.

The battle request has just been sent in. Confirmation, and well as the date of the battle, will take some time to process.

You find Vince working the console for sending in the battle request. It looks unnecessarily complicated, from what you can see.
    "Yo." you greet.
"Hey, Gerald, what can I do for ya? You have any questions about the battle?" He continues to fill out the forms, focusing his attention on the screen.
"That can wait till the challenge goes through. Just wanted to talk. We haven't really had a one on one that didn't include alcohol."

He laughs. "So what's on your mind?"
"Just wanted to hear a bit about you. How long have you been a pilot, what have you been doing these last few years, stuff like that."
He turns off the screen, finally finishing the forms. "I've been piloting for over ten years now. The Hound's been with me the whole time. Real reliable, wouldn't take anything else over him."
"It is pretty cool." You admit. "And I haven't even seen it in action yet."
"Thanks. As for what I did, I was a mercenary, bodyguard, all sorts of things. Took whatever jobs were handy. Money never really stayed around, so when I eventually made it back here, I thought I'd put a team together."

You nod. "Look, Vince," you begin cautiously, "about Eri..."
"Keep it in your pants." he states flatly. You wince a bit. "I know you have some character, but the fact is, I've only known you for a few days. And while she's taken a shine to you, I don't want you mucking around with her."
He seems to notice your disappointment. "I'm not saying you can't go out with her. Just keep your hands to yourself. If she wants to have a serious relationship, I can't do anything about it, but mind your manners til then."
You grin. "So it's fine if she does something right?"
He glares laser blades at you. "Dont get any bright ideas, I'm holding you responsible for keeping things clean."
"Can't hear you~!" you jeer, skipping out of the room.
    "Gerald!" he squawks angrily.

Ok, face ripping has been delayed to a later date and I was planning on moving fast on this front anyways so we're safe for the moment.

Go to the Hanger, give our Molga a hug and check in on how repairs to the Houndsoldier are progressing, we want him to be in fighting shape before the battle.

After that we'll check the job board and see if there's anything interesting to do in the meanwhile.

    "How's everything?"
She looks up as you make your way over. "Hey, Gerald. Everything looks good, the auto-rail for the Blaster Cannon's armor covering is working properly. I'd like to do a test fire later, but it should work out."
"Thanks a lot for all the work you've done." you say as you give her a hug from the back. She grins up at you.
"Any time, hotshot. Did you want to do anything while we wait for the battle confirmation?"
"Well there were a few, but Vince shot those down just now." He expression falls.
    "You didn't."
"Sorry, I wanted to avoid any problems later." you say apologetically. She sighs.
"For crying out loud, I'm an adult too, you know. He's should mind his own business.
You release her. "We can humor him for now. Still want to go to that barbecue place in Haden?" She grins.
"Sure do, though that can wait a bit. We just had lunch. What about right now?"

"I wonder if that Sleeper clearing job's still available?" he ponder out loud.
"If it isn't, a new one might have been posted." Eri adds. "Lots of Sleepers nests left over from the old war, they're finding new ones almost as fast as they clear them. There's almost always one ready."

You both make your way to a console and bring up the ZBC site. Scrolling down the listings, you find it. 500 credits to clear the nest, and rights to all salvage.
"These are a real boon for new team." Eri informs you. "Sleepers can easily be beaten if you hit the cockpit the computer is in, and you can walk away with a lot of zoids and parts. It's good practice too. Most zoids used for Sleeper traps aren't up to snuff next to our more modern zoids, so if your careful, you can gain a lot with little risk."

Sounds good. You note the location, a mountain about 60 miles northeast, past the area you saved Rob before. Seeing no other jobs that really seem profitable, you send notice that your taking it to the ZBC.

"Could you do that outside the hanger?"
"Hm? I guess I could." she replies, not understanding.
"Then just bring along the crane component for now. Now's a good chance to get some training in for you."

"It'll be fine. I'll be there to back you up, and Audrey to, if she wants to come."

She hesitates, but finally agrees. You ask her to get things ready while you find Audrey. You reach her room, only to hear sounds of explosions. You almost jump, but quickly realize it was a real explosion, else you'd have felt vibrations.

It should be a basic job, sleeper zoids. They aren't really all that intelligent, more instincts than tactics, but still can be dangerous.

Our goals here are to get Eri some combat experience, get me and Audrey some practice working together and to have a good time.

    And make some dosh.

Tactics, Audrey will scout out the area, keep your distance and use your speed to avoid confrontation until we have a full idea of what we're up against. Then we can lure them, hopefully one at a time into a shooting gallery, we'll take the high ground. Anything that gets close Audrey should pulverize with her claws.

Take one of the gentler paths up, I'd rather not spend our whole time burrowed in it as that would reduce what we see. Try to spend as much time on ground we can burrow in just in case things go pear shaped. Try to at least get a good idea of what is on the side near our team and see if we can get a bit more on the other sides but it's not as high a priority.

Skirt wide of any wild zoids we see, we're playing recon currently.

You slowly make your way up near where you parked. This section has a lot of fairly loose dirt. In fact, nearly all the ground of the mountain can be burrowed in, to some depths.

You advance about a third of the way up, but your seismic sensors are silent. You see no signs of activity either.
["Gerald?"] Eri radio's you after about 10 minutes. ["What's going on up there?"]
"Not a thing." you respond. "No response whatsoever, and I even rechecked the map. this is the right place."

"Eri, take a shot at the mid section of the mountain. That should get their attention."
    ["Roger that."]
"Audrey, get in position to cover her just in case."
    ["Ok."]

You wait a moment, and then Eri's shots hit, some distance away. You feel the rumble, as another shot impacts for good measure. Then you wait. And wait. Over a minute passes.
["Want me to aim at a different spot?"] Eri coms in. Your about to answer, when suddenly your seismic sensor goes crazy. Movement.
Movement everywhere. Coming from deep underground. Too deep. A Guysack or Sinker, popular Sleeper choices, couldn't burrow up from that depth. Really the only thing you know of that could is-

"It makes sense if you consider the terrain." you add. "They're only protecting this mountain, rather than ambushing enemies. Their low maneuverability wont come into play here, essentially they're fortified turrets that can move around."
["What do we do? Their cockpits are much better armored and guarded than the normal."]

You tell her to keep firing for now, she still has the range advantage. You also advise she watch her sensors, some may even try to burrow under her.
You also tell Audrey to run interference as best she can without endangering herself. They both give an affirmative.

You advance very slowly, as the Sleepers make their way down. Eri begins shelling the area behind you as you near the rear of the formation. You eye the farthest Molga from you, and get an idea. You burrow, still stealthed. It slows slightly, noticing the seismic activity, but not able to comprehend what it could be.
You rear up from underneath its head, piercing into the cockpit with your Laser cutters. From bellow, the armored shell above the cockpit offers no protection, something you yourself will have to watch out. The pincers seem to have knocked out the computer that operates the sleeper in lieu of an actual pilot. That's one way to do it, it seems.

None of the other Sleepers noticed you thanks to Eri's shelling. You are currently behind the formation. Which way do you go?

You continue to strafe the Sleepers, and fire your 35mm when you get a clear shot at the Driver Wheels. The shock to the systems cause one to shut down. You bracket another, but can't get the wheel. You finally just run into it and scoop under with the cutters. It's head rears up, and you drive under it further, lining the vulnerable cockpit with you Blaster cannon. Well, Eri did say it needed a test fire...
The armor covering slides back, and the barrel extends out slightly. You pull the trigger. Theres a muffled 'poomf', and the cockpit shakes a little. An off yellow beam blows a hole right through the Sleeper's cockpit, and out the other end of the armor shell, to boot.
    "Whoa..."

    >Else where.
Eri lined up her recitals onto the Molga's head.
"Should have stayed in cover." she pulls the trigger, and her particle cannon lances out, striking the other zoid right in the head. The armor shell melts away, and while the cockpit is intact, its visibly scorched. The system must have shorted out, as it falls still where it stood.
"Gotcha!" Eri cheers, but then gets rocked in her seat as another Molga opens fire on her. She tries to move out of the way, but can't managed to get out of the line of fire. Thankfully her armor can take a beating. She fires back with her sub guns, but can't get a solid hit. She nearly calls for assistance, but the Demantis swoops in, ramming the Molga from the side and grabbing it with its phalanx claws.
    "Thanks Audrey!"
The other girl giggles from her companions praise.

["Gerald!"] Eri calls you, ["I'm gonna shell the peak, get away from where the slide area."]

I wonder what the point could have been for putting these sleepers here? Is there a mountain pass they're protecting or something? Cause they certainly wouldn't have been set to harass any enemies that wandered into the surrounding area. You gun westward, and Eri hits the peek. It takes 3 shots, but the rock and earth finally give way. As the debris comes pouring down the mountain side, you turn a hard left of the loose dirt, and power slide down on the edge of the landslide. The remaining Molga's are engulfed as the earth washes over them, some flip over and slide down the slope, unable to right themselves.
["EEK!"] Eri screams over the com. You raise her and ask whats wrong. ["Nothing, some of the land reached me. It stopped short before it could cover the Tortoise though."]
You breathe a sigh of relief. You look up and see Audrey taking care of the sleepers that are flipped over. You move up to the top of the area hit by the slide. One single sleeper digs its way out, and you quickly dispatch it with the blaster cannon. Your hub beeps, and informs you that the weapon is over heating. Guess quick succession is a no no with it. Great stopping power, though.

You ask Audrey to take a look around the mountains while you make your way down to Eri.
    "Need a hand?"
["I'm not stuck, but I could use some help getting the crane on."]
    "Will do."
You both set to swapping out the cannon for the crane, your Molga hoisting the components by raising its head to pull up attached cables. Your positioning the crane over the Tortoise when Audrey raises you.
["Mr Gerald, I found something where the rocks broke off in the landslide. Some type of structure."]
    "A base?"
["No, it looks more like...a tower. Like one of those radio towers we saw near the ZBC terminal."]

A communication tower. Too remote to have manned, to valuable to leave unguarded. The pieces all fall in place. Only a small number of sleepers, but ones that can take advantage of the terrain, and guard it on all sides.
Disappointing, but it can't be a treasure trove all the time. Then again, you're practically drowning in Molga spare parts.

Your gonna watch it on video. She's grounded, remember? Just something to do.

You tell you'd love to watch, and and ask if she'll hold while you go to a proper monitor.
Audrey meets you in the hall, and after some talking, decides to watch with you.
You both settle in the conference room, snacks at the ready. You turn on to the battle network, this is a D-class battle, and although its somewhat of a big deal, it's not pay per view. You turn on another monitor, and Sarah comes back up. She fills you in before the battle gets underway.
"Ok, team Fullmoon is made up of a Konig wolf, and two Command wolves. Pretty good firepower and mobility. They have good balance. Right now they're 26-3. Next up," she starts, but a roar from your tv screen gets your attention. Your greeted by the sight of some form of Liger zoid, heavily customized.
"Speaking of, that's Dune Saver's leader, Conan Walker. He fought a lot of one on ones before forming a team, and was undefeated. That's his shield Liger, and its pimped out even more than your Zoid." You believe it. "Their teams 23-1 right now, his team mates have a Saberlion and a Lightning Saix. They're really good with high speed combat."

The judge comes on the video feed.
<Area Scanned. Battlefield Set up. The Fullmoon Team VS the Dune Savers team. Battle Mode 0980. No speed boosting components or thrusters are permitted.>
What? Why would Dune Savers accept a battle mode that clearly takes away one of their advantages.
"How cheep." Sarah comments. "Even if you want an advantage, that's too obvious."
    <Ready? Fight!>

The battle begins, and Conan's Liger spear heads the way to the opposing team. Fullmoon fires at them, but he simply activates his shield. They close in, but the wolves scatter.
Then in a brown flash, the Saberlion, which you realize had been hiding behind the Liger, rushes down one of the Command wolves. It's blade unfolds, and while the Wolf attempts to evade, the Lion cuts right through it. The judge declares the wolf out of the battle.

Meanwhile, the Lightning Saix exchanges fire with the lead Konig Wolg, niether able to land a decisive shot as they maneuver around the battlefield. The Liger comes around and rushes down the other Command Wolf. It evades the charge, but just when you think it's escaped, the custom ligers blades fold down, and cut into the wolf's flank. It too goes down.

The Konig wolf tries to bring the Saix into melee, its Bite Fang weapon glowing. However, the Saix jumps backwards and to the side, nailing the wolf with point blank shots to its flank.

The battle lasted a little over 2 minutes.
"Ah man!" Sarah says in disbelief. "They completely outclassed them!"
Indeed, no boosters or not, the Fullmoon team still couldn't keep up with the other team.

So that's you future competition, huh?

Watch super sentai cartoons with Audrey until Eri comes back. Then go get some BBQ with her, we delayed it because of going out to make dosh but I think she doesn't mind.

Will we end up doing dozens upon dozens of zoid matches in game or will we have some 'easy wins' handwaved inbetween?

"I don't think you'd be able to just hide from these guys." Sarah counters.
"They're really strong..." Audrey says to herself. You tell her not to worry, you're as strong as Danlaiga. She grins a bit.
The tv cuts to an interview with the winners. Conan is a gentle faced man, with short black hair.
"Mr Walker," a reporter begins. "This battle puts you at number one of Class-D in the entire region, and gives you the right to challenge for a Rank up battle, to Class-C. What are your future plans?"
"Our team isn't in any hurry," the man begins in a mellow voice, "we feel its best to pace ourselves so as not to hit a wall. Although we intend to rank up eventually, right now we have our own agendas to work out right now."
"Are you referring to the Dune Save charity?" asks the reporter. He chuckles a bit.
"The Dune Save is my own personal project, to help preserve an restore the wild life that was especially devastated by the asteroids 30 years ago. It's something I've worked for for many years, and have just now-"
"Oh, kill me!" Sarah groans. "Turn it off, DeFlynn, this guy won't shut up once he gets going."
You were somewhat interested in what he was saying, but you comply. Then a realization hits you.
"Why'd I have to turn it off?" you ask her. "You are watching on your own tv, right?"
She grins mischievously. "Uncle disable my television. I just watched through your video feed."
Audrey giggles, a bit amused. You sigh.

The Hound Buster Cannon costs 28,000. It's a very powerful weapon for its weight. Vince feels it be over kill at the moment, so he's doing without.(he originaly sold it himself to help pay off some debts Eri's dad had racked up)

"Fair maiden, might we hasten to the land yonder, to partake in indulgence of meat, broiled over open flame?" you say as foppish as you can manage. She turns her head to the side.
    "I ....guess?"
"Capital!" you clap your hands. "Vincent, my coat."
Vince leans into you. "No funny business." he warns, a knife he pulled from somewhere glinting. You nod nervously.
"Let me change first, I'd like to wear something nicer in town." You decide it might be good to dapper up a bit your self, you head to your room. Not a lot to choose from, you finaly settle on a brown wind breaker and jeans.

You meet up with Eri at the hanger. She has a beige vest over a white t-shirt, and some clean khaki shorts.
    "Don't overdress, now." you tease.
"Oh hush, like you're any better." she snaps back. Let's take the Molga, we already dropped off the Gustav while we were in town."

You both enter the cockpit, and head out.

Talk about the mission earlier. Tell her that her shooting was good and she maintained grace under pressure, in short she did good. Tell her that we'll work on maneuverability in the future though Vince and Audrey might be of more help with that. If she ever wants help with shelling we're her man.

Talk about how nicely the Molga is running and how much work she's put into it, tell her it'll be sad to one day upgrade.

She grins ear to ear. "Don't get all sappy over tricking out your ride, Gerald. It's an impressive Molga, to be sure, but it has its limits. Eventually you'll hit an obstacle it won't be able to overcome. That's how it is with everything." She sighs a bit, taking a more mellow expression. "I ran into a lot of obstacles, that I didn't think I'd ever overcome. But you know what, you gave me hope. It isn't just the zoid, you know. You are the one who made all those things you did in the past few days happen. You're amazing."

She leans over your seat and kisses you on the cheek. "So if you come up against a wall, and this little wormy can't get past, I'll make you up something even better."

You get to the restaurant, and converse, about important things, and about nothing important at all. You're waiting for the check when you notice a table across the room, thats made progressively louder noise. They're laughing and telling stories liberally.
"And rember that time, when I had to come save you from that puny-"
"Hey now, why you hafta bring that up?"
You squint for a bit, and realize you recognize them.
It's the members of the StoneAge team.
"They're awful loud." Eri comments. Indeed they are, but they're not causing any problems. Your check arrives, and you pay for the meal. Eri insists that you let her pay.

You walk over to their table, bidding them hello. They return it heartily.
"Hey, I know you!" a man with a bristly beard states. "You're the lad who won that battle royal a while ago. Good show man!"
"Indeed." adds a thin faced man with lavender hair. "Quite impressive, especially the end. I got a kick out of seeing that Godos get topple over by a collapsing building."
"Bah! I'd a lick'd ya if I were out there." a gruff man with red hair and scared forhead challenges.
"Aw, shaddup, Lode!" the beared man barks, throwing a napkin at his face. He turns to you and holds out his hand, which you accept.
"Call me Morgan, kid, Gerald if I remember." you nod. He laughs and gives your hand a heavy shake. "How bout it boy, wanna join our team? We could use a man like you."
"Regrettably, I already joined a team." you inform them. "We have our first match lined up."
"Hey, so do we!" Morgan tells you enthusiastically. "Tomorrow at noon, even. It's our first official battle. Come watch, maybe it'll change your mind!"

"Gerald, you wouldn't really leave the team, would you?"
You take in your arms and gently push her against the Molga.
"You really think I'd leave a girl like you so easily?" You give her a kiss before she can answer.
    >one makeout later
She blushes as you help her into the Molga. "I guess I don't have anything to worry about." she says with a smile.
