29 KB ARMORED CORE QUEST: THE MAKING OF PART THE THIRD. AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)18:56 No.18820079
    Hey guys, It's me again.

I'd like to take a moment to apologize to my players for having to cut out early yesterday, ON TOP OF getting a late start.

I really only got the chance to do it at all because my friend (the one who normally hosts when we get together to play games) had his basement flooded (the place in said house where we normally chill) due to the spring melt.

On a slightly more positive note, thanks to unrelenting encouragement from literally everyone I've talked to about it I'm going to be taking my friend's advice and starting up some sort of crowd-funding thing (most likely on IndieGoGo) as soon as I can think of a cool name to put down for the company, so I can take the leap from 'knowledgeable enthusiast' into PROFESSIONAL game design and other forms of entertainment media. This game of tacticool robot fightin will be the first real, professional release under that new brand.

I'm so exited at the opportunity that I'm having problems sleeping, and so nervous It's actually making me physically ill.

But enough about me, let's talk AC Quest: I'll put down some basic crunch on request. Also, if anybody can come up with a cool name for a game design company (traditional or otherwise) that would be pretty bangin. I'm starting to think names are the biggest weakness in my creative drive.

I'll open the thread by re-posting the basic Mechanics examples from before, so new guys don't have navigate the archives to get to them.

    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)18:57 No.18820092
The system is built around three kinds of rolls:

[Event dice] A d20 is rolled for adjusting the circumstance of the situation.

This isn't a random encounter thing, it's more of a luck thing. Like you GO to a restaurant. You ORDER the food. But then a bad roll might give you food poisoning.

If you're just walking aimlessly down the road, you might run into a friend. You might run into somebody who needs help. Or you might run into a guy who's sworn a blood oath to kill you.

Depending on your reputation and past events, some of these events will be more likely than the others.

[Action Dice] This is the primary die you'll be rolling a lot as a player and/or GM.

This is the Equivalent to D&D's 20 side-er, and sees about as much use.

These rolls are percentile based, and are based around a 'roll under system'.

It's pretty simple. You take circumstantial bonuses (Such as catching a target unaware, or having the right tools for the job), your relevant skill (ballistics and mechanics, to build on the prior examples), and then you get a target number. Said number falls between 1 and one hundred. You roll a percentile die and try to go under it like you're playing limbo.

Beating it (or failing to beat it) by a certain amount gives you an additional degree of success (or failure).

For instance: Barely beating a roll to pick a lock gets it open, while beating it by a lot means there's no evidence the lock's been tampered with. Failing by a little bit will only mean you've lost some time, while failing by a lot means you just broke your pick in the lock, jamming it 'permanently'.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)18:59 No.18820104

[Effect dice] This is where things get interesting.

An effect die is the die you roll to determine, well, effect.

Like rolling for damage on a gun, or how how well you cook a dish.

Certain actions have a THRESHOLD for additional degrees of success. The default threshold is 10. Certain things can make this number go up and down.

Let's take a character from the quest, Elise Winters. She has a sniper canon that does d8-2 damage. Her threshold for sniping is 8.

She rolls to shoot somebody, the target number is 75, and she gets a 51.

Normally this means that she would get Two degrees of success, but due to her lower threshold for sniping, she gets three.

This means she gets extra effect dice. Since the damage die (a d8) has a qualifier (a '-2') this effects the amount of additional dice she gets (in this case, the amount is doubled. Certain things, such as an extremely good targeting computer, could boost that even further. if it read d8/2, she would get HALF the bonus dice)
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)18:59 No.18820115

So she gets 8d8 for damage here. Let's say the person she's shooting at has Primal Armour (A yet unseen mechanic) at rating 2.

So the amount of dice is reduced to 6d8.

She rolls, and gets the following: 5,5,6,8,8,1

Since she got two eights, she makes a check against her Synch ratio to see if the dice explode.

Her rate is currently at 55%, so that's her target on the percentile. She rolls under, at a 24. Unfortunately, you don't get additional degrees of success, criticals, or crit failures on this roll.

She re-rolls the dice. she gets a 3, and another 8. She rolls again against her synch. Since the die already exploded once, her target number is dropped by the roll's threshold. In this case an eight, and will be for each successive explosion until either she rolls over the number, or it hits the negatives and becomes mathematically impossible.

For the sake of simplification, let's assume she fails the make the second explosion.

In regards to 'leveling up' and character creation:

Basically, you'll get a number of points, and buy certain features, aspects, skills, and feats for your character, with a separate pool for your core.

    Much like Shadowrun.

Parts can only be bought from your current rating and lower during creation. Ratings would be kinda like Dark Heresy's 'level' system, where's it's not 'having this much XP makes you level up' but 'having these many powers and abilities means you're now classified as THIS.'

In addition to that, certain specializations can be bought to boost certain things.

This is still pretty vague in my mind, but I think you can see where I'm going with it.

Characters are upgraded VIA XP 99% of the time, and 99% of the time, Cores are upgraded with PARTS bought with MORE MONEY.

You can do safe jobs to earn dosh, and run sims to boost skills, but it's very much a risk=reward. On the other hand, it lets you test out a potential Core build in a risk-free environment, WHILE EARNING YOU EXPERIENCE. Allowing all the time in the garage to be worth something more that a shiny new paint-job.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)19:06 No.18820188
Skills are easy: They get a rating, plus the related attribute, plus any circumstantial modifiers.

The ratings are: Basic, advanced, master. Each rank adds an additional +5 to the target number.

There's also a quick skill test, and an extended test.

In a quick test for mechanics for instance, you might want to diagnose a problem in your damaged thrusters an compensate mid-battle.

Because this is a relatively simple task, it's simply a 'beat the target' scenario. An example would be when Laurie and Ken, the mechanic, disarmed the bomb.

An extended test would be something like repairing a core after battle. You would have two target numbers: a number to roll under for difficulty, and a number of success points needed to finish the task.

In this scenario, the rolls resemble combat, with the effect dice increasing with the success rating, and then potentially exploding the dice for bigger numbers.

You can buy perks and take flaws that make it so that the dice you roll for effect get bigger/smaller.

For instance, Mooch's computer use (required skill for hacking) lets him use a d10, while Dave is tech-retarded as far as computer shit goes, so he would only gets a d4.

It should also be noted that certain things can only be attempted with a certain skill mastery. Take mechanics for instance: You can change a tire untrained. You can realign a gun barrel with basic, you can diagnose a hydraulics problem with advanced, but you aren't even allowed to THINK about touching the reactor core without a skill mastery.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)19:07 No.18820195

Sometimes those extended tests have a time limit: Like when you're trying to patch up damage on a core before an enemy arrives, or trying to hack and extract data before your signal gets back-tracked and you get booted out of the system.

Let's say Mooch is rolling to hack a terminal, and the system's security is REALLY GOOD. He only has two rounds to get what he can out.

Getting all the data he could use would take a full 100 points of success.

Because he plotted this out in advance, he gets a +10 to hack, on top of his higher intelligence rating (20) and his skill Mastery (another +15).

He has a full 45 as his target number, before you consider the extremely tight security. So he loses a 10.

He rolls a natural one for the initial hack, which normally would have taken his threshold of 6 and given him 5 additional successes. But rolling a nat 1/100 gives you an additional degree of success/failure (hasn't come up yet in the quest proper). So with 7 degrees of success, mooch gets to roll a full 8 dice to try and hack.

He rolled a ten, so he gets a chance to explode: He succeeds, and rolls an 8.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)19:08 No.18820199

Mooch now has 44/100 success points. Since he got a critical success, the GM decides he gets a bonus round to try and get more.

Mooch then gets a 100, and doesn't have a fate point to spare to fix it. Not only does he fail to get any more data out this round, but the next round the system gets harder to hack after it's spotted such a clumsy error.

Now he has to beat a 30 instead of a 35. Rolling again, he gets two degrees of success, and lucks out with two 10s. He's now at 64/100, and he activates one of his aspects (Supreme confidence) to cool his nerves and give him a higher determination for the next check. He makes it, barely, with the boost and roll a 5 and another 10. His boost still active, he manages to beat is one more time and get a 3.

He managed to get 82/100 possible successes before getting kicked out of the system, giving him a decent head-start on information, though not as good as he COULD have done.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)19:09 No.18820212
Then there's the aspect system: An aspect is basically the same as it is under the FATE system: A defining character trait. There's also a points system associated with it, but it's a bit more flexible than FATE points.

Let's take Mooch's example aspect: Supreme Confidence. Having it invoked basically makes him think 'I got this'. In a situation where a small boost could really help out, Mooch can invoke this trait in order to give him the boost and help him.

However, the GM could ALSO choose to invoke this trait, for a negative effect. You could have one of your aspects be 'Greatest swordsman ever' and get a decent boost to your melee skills. But you should also expect people to hear abut your reputation and make you prove it.

In Mooch's case, it would make him think 'I got this' in situations where he most certainly does not.

Now, as a player you COULD buy off these things, at the cost of a action chip (working title). The GM could accept this, or raise you. Mooch can at any time choose to stop trying to resist the urge, and get the entire stack of chips the GM is promising him for acting 'in character'. But if the GM backs down, Mooch loses all those chips, but also gets to walk away from a situation he really isn't ready for.

Aspects may or may not be a optional part of the final system, but I fucking love them, so I'm probably going to try and shoe-horn them in there. I just like the diea of a visible mechanical profit from staying true to your character. It's one of the best ways to get a munchkin to stop Min/Maxing constantly.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)19:13 No.18820253
So the short summery is this: It's going to be high action mech-combat sitting directly between Battle-Tech and Gundam on the sliding scale between 'super-robot' and 'realistic mechs' with so many customization options it's going to look like a GURPS giant robot supplement.

It's also going to play like the hypothetical bastard child of Shadowrun, Dark Heresy, FATE, and fucking Deadlands.

    In giant robots.

So yeah, shit's gonna be crazy, and I'm out of my head trying to figure out why I thought making this would be a fun and rewarding experience.

    So, any questions/comments/concerns?

What do you plan for the range for stats to be? Is 20 average, 10-15 bad, 30 good and 40 really fucking amazing?

What are the bonuses and minuses for standard task difficulties? I like the changing of the threshold based on skill, it's clever. I'm wondering if +15 is a large enough bonus for Mastery, but given that you can get bonuses from other sources I'm not sure.

How many aspects does a character usually have, can a player invoke an NPC's aspect in a negative way?
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)19:40 No.18820516

10 is about where somebody with no training or experience is going to be.

So like somebody who's only HEARD about cooking is suddenly confronted with having to fry eggs in a pan, or somebody who doesn't understand anything about cars suddenly having to change a tire would be here.

the 40-50 range is going to be serious professional work done by people at the top of their game, skill wise.

Of course, this is just stats raw off the sheet, not including things like circumstantial bonuses.

SO like a professional chef would have a 40 to cook with. But he would also have assistance of other cooks (which would be a bonus), and a very well equipped/stocked kitchen (Another Bonus), etc. until he's rolling against like a 70 in his favored environment.

[Please note that the cooking is a metaphor, and I currently have no plans to introduce a culinary sub-system]

As far as aspects.... I don't really have a set limit right now. I mean, the fact that it's a double edged sword should be enough of a deterrent to keep people from trying to just take a million of them. You could also opt out of taking any, and remove the associated risks and gambles from the character entirely.

And yes, you could invoke someone's negative aspect, if you know they have it. This could be done via RP deductions, or rolling a skill check to research somebody to find out that they're pretty lucky, so they have a hard time saying 'no' to a bet.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)19:54 No.18820651
So anything else? I'll take any and all questions.

Could you go into more details concerning the guns we might be able to acquire in the near future. I'm not talking the super experimental tech but how much better than our current gear is the next tier or so up?

Are there affordable parts, legs, arms, head and the like that would be a noticeable improvement over our current stuff?

I'll be addressing that in the next thread or two in game.

The average increase up the ranks is pretty small. Like from one rank to the next, the equivalent legs part is going to have like 10% more armor and like 5% more carrying capacity or something.

It's going to be better, all of the parts are going to be better, but not by a HUGE amount.

But then think about this: let's say, objectively, the parts get better by EXACTLY 5% by every rank. This means that S class gear is going to have 20% better stats than D class.

I really don't have anything more specific for you at the moment, sorry. Where I'm at in development terms is slightly pre-alpha. Alpha would be where most of the basic framework is in place, and Beta would be a less refined version of the final product.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)20:04 No.18820755

I feel like there's a joke here, but I'm not getting it.

Could you give me a few examples of traits/feats, like Dave's melee specialty, Elsie being able to make called shots without penalty or ignore range mods and tell me what ones our team has?
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)20:28 No.18820949

The difference between a trait and a feat is that a Trait goes both ways. A trait is like an aspect that's always on: it's a part of the character. Whereas a feat is something like a specially trained technique.

So Getting a bonus to hit would be a feat, while getting a BIG bonus to hit by sacrificing your defense bonus would be a trait: one implies an ability to keep calm, while the other is a berserker like recklessness.

So Alex has a Trait called 'Guardian' that gives him a boost to any action made to defend an ally (like attacking somebody who's moving in to flank someone else) and a penalty to take a different action (like pursuing a mission objective while ignoring the flanking opponent).

He also has a feat called 'Mind of Steel' that keeps any penalties from being wounded from applying until the round AFTER.

It should be noted that this includes things like DEATH.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)20:32 No.18820994

Dave's Melee expertise is a trait, as is Elsie's sniping bonuses.

Another example of a trait would be Mooch's 'Uncommon Sense'. For things like knowledge checks or intuitive leaps, the bonus/penalty chart is actually REVERSED. So he's actually less likely to realize sticking a fork in the toaster to remove bread is a bad idea, than suddenly taking inspiration from sun-screen for a more efficient method of solar paneling.

You mean when I do it, or theoretically putting rules down for you guys to do it?
    >> Anonymous 04/22/12(Sun)20:43 No.18821097
Either or, They will both give us an Idea on what were working with. Both would be best seeing as we just had a chat with the engineer crew about custom parts a thread or 2 ago.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)20:50 No.18821154

Well, custom parts as in a custom load-out.

I don't have any solid rules for parts creation right now, and I'm going to have to make some to add in for you guys, either as a part of the core rules, or a post-launch supplement.

As for how I make them, I just sort of have a general idea of the power-scale, the types of parts we're playing with, the general damage values, etc.

Then I take a shot in the dark, make a part based on my knowledge, and then adjust it until it's workable or obvious it isn't, and then it's either added or scrapped, respectively.

The sort of custom parts Ken was referring to was custom parts like Mooch has: CUSTOMIZABLE STOCK PARTS.

You know how in Mass Effect you could add some sort of Mod parts to a gun or a piece of armor to change how it worked a bit? Like add armor piercing rounds, or make it so that it needed less time to recharge the shields?

THAT'S the custom Ken was getting into, not making a brand new part out of thin air.
    >> Anonymous 04/22/12(Sun)20:57 No.18821225
hm, I see what you mean. We can add things like extended barrels and heat sink kinda things to our weapons and tweak our legs and arms to support greater weight. Thank you!
    >> Anonymous 04/22/12(Sun)21:02 No.18821261
Interesting, full custom parts will probably be prohibitively expensive and the upkeep will eat us alive, but custom stock parts seems workable for our band.

How hellish is it going to be to repair Ari's and Mooch's AC if they get damaged?

What is the jump in expenses to buy parts that are a tier higher? Both in purchasing and maintaining?

How much of a bonus did we get for the Rayleonard job?
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)21:06 No.18821282

Assuming near-total destruction? Ari's is a lot more custom than Mooch's. But Ari also has a lot of Dumb-plate that's so cheap she has a button to jettison them if she decides she needs maneuverability more than armor.

About them same in maintenance as the performance jump.

Purchase price is however going to vary wildly.

    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)21:07 No.18821284

Also you don't know, Mooch is currently the guy handling finances, you'd have to ask him.

Mind going over fate points? Mainly what we can or can't spend one on, what we can spend one to do, and most importantly how many each person has as of the next quest thread.

So as long as Ari doesn't total it and only takes surface damage the repairs are easy, but if any important components get taken out we'll be hurting financially.

Does using the Over-Weapon cause damage to her AC, what side effects of using it are there? How much of a goodly sized office building could she cause with it, could we use it to cause rockslides, make cliffs fall down and induce avalanches?
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)21:16 No.18821362

Currently, a fate point can be spent to:
    >Buy an extra degree of success/remove a degree of failure, once per roll.
    >Force a re-roll of an opposed check.
    >Re-roll a failed check.
    >Gain a bonus equal to twice the roll's threshold if spent beforehand.

And one could be burned to:
    >Survive something that would have killed you.
    >Make an automatic success as though you just rolled a natural 1.
    >Attempt an otherwise impossible task (such as repairing a reactor breech without the appropriate skill level).

Other things might be added to that list in the future.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)21:19 No.18821394

    >Does using it cause damage to her AC?

If it's over-charged or damaged, yes.

    >How much of a goodly sized office building could she cause with it?

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

    >Could we use it to cause rockslides, make cliffs fall down, and induce avalanches?

Potentially. Though that would require me to add yet another entry to the 'list of things to make rules for'.
    >> Anonymous 04/22/12(Sun)21:27 No.18821466
I should probably proofread a bit more, I meant how much of a goodly sized office building could she take out with a single shot.

I'm not exactly getting what you mean by gain a bonus equal to twice the roll's threshold if spent beforehand. Does that mean the target number is improved by, if the threshold is 10, 20 thus giving an extra two degrees of success, if we pass normally, or if we go over by 10 we'll succeed with one degree of success?
    >> Anonymous 04/22/12(Sun)21:29 No.18821493
Might as well, Its a fairly common trick. do floods due to levy breaks and dam break. It would be smart. The work for it could be threw having a size classification for terrain, the a size classification for the landslide/flood. using these you can then rank them as necessarily. It would take a bit of work, but its fairly feasible to do.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)21:31 No.18821511

It means that the target number gets bigger.

So if your threshold was ten, then instead of say, rolling against a 40, you would be rolling against a 60.

Reviewing that now though, I think I shall have to revise that bit.

As for the office building... I have no idea. If she shot it in a vital place, it could bring the whole thing down, or it could just punch a small hole all the way through.

I'm either under or over thinking your question, and I'm not sure which it is.
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)21:32 No.18821519

    >> Anonymous 04/22/12(Sun)21:43 No.18821658
Hmm, I can think of two factors to use to classify any object. How easy it is to destroy/weaken/make fall over, and how much destruction it'll cause when that happens.

A solid, low to the ground bunker will be difficult to destroy, and unless it's chock full of explosives won't cause much damage. A weakened dam will have a low threshold for breaking it and a high destruction rating due to the flooding.

The nice thing is that you don't particularly have to differentiate between cliffs, landslides, dams and office buildings when it comes to making the system.

If you want to go more in depth with the breaking it aspect you can give it the equivalent of DR or something like that, where individual shots won't cause much damage to it but a single big one will, you could have scratch damage where if you shoot it enough with a smaller weapon eventually something is going to give.

You'll have to be a bit creative with how exactly the damage is fluffed, you're going to get different effects from a flood than you will from an explosion which will differ from something like a cliff or building falling.

What are the standard bonuses and minuses on skill checks?

For example mechanic, replacing a car engine, fixing an engine you know, fixing superficial AC damage with proper tools, fixing minor damage without tools, fixing serious damage with the right parts and tools, having to fabricate the proper parts yourself?

Also when our AC was a buggy mech straight fron the Junkyard what was the mishap table like and what were our chances of triggering it?
    >> AC-Guy 04/22/12(Sun)22:18 No.18822038

    That's a lot of questions.....

Alright, first off, there is no 'standard' plus or minus right now. It all varies, but it's very easy to calculate.

Explaining all of that would take a while right now, and have some shit I need to go do before I start the quest today.

As for the failure chart.... that's also complicated, but in a different way. I could explain how it was, but since then I've completely changed how it works, so there would be no point.

There is another title, but it both doesn't work for this, and is being saved for a different venture in the near-ish future.

Also, there's currently all of two people introduced thus far who aren't new characters created for AC Quest. Though I might have a few people make a Cameo appearance later.

In that case, there's these two other options:
General Partnership: good for when all partners are part of the daily operations of the business, and are all responsible for business debts and the like.

Limited Partnership: If you've got people who are just providing funding and aren't going to be a part of daily operations and business decisions, they can forego much of their fiscal responsibility for the company's actions, but still be owners and have a stake in the profits.

    >> AC-Guy 04/23/12(Mon)23:21 No.18837117

The problem is a normal lance wouldn't really work on AC scale.

Just, the straight slender metal pole, no gimmicks would fucking shatter into a million pieces the first time you tried to stab somebody with it.

Then you have a couple variant options: Make it sturdy enough that it can take the impact, and then you've got something that weighs a lot more than a physical blade with about half the utility in combat, since all you could do is charge people.

You could make it with a pressure trigger on the end, for a single use burst cannon/rail, but then you have a heat-rod on a stick. And it couldn't be as powerful, and a fuck-ton more awkward to try and use.

You could go laser, but there's already a laser sword that big, and once again, it can be used in something other than a straight line.

A lance is one of those really cool ideas that sort of fall apart when you really examine them. Like that flail-guy. In his element? In a place where he could leverage his thing to maximum effectiveness? He's a fucking S-class threat. In every other situation ever? Not so much.

I mean, there's probably a way to do it well and effectively, but I'm having a hard time seeing it.
    >> Anonymous 04/23/12(Mon)23:28 No.18837209
I'm personally ok with not a polearm, I mostly just brought it up because people seemed really excited about it last night. The main thing is that we need some manner of better close range weapon since we never don't get into melee range.

It works defensively against a combatant using standard melee weapons, though it ties up both hands.

We could take a shotgun, modify it to be a mech equivalent to a sawn-off, and call it a day. Anyone who gets close to us gets a body full of fuck you from close range. Terrible in any other situation however, but we could probably replace the pistol with it if we manage to reduce its size enough.

Heavily customized weapon, basically I suppose.

In all honesty I don't think many of us really wanted to be the mid-range generalist we built our AC to be. Sniper (for safety) or melee (for fun and heroism) would have been the top choices, except that team already has both of those so we built an AC to fit into the team not to fit our play style and this is where a lot of our combat issues stem from.

When we get some downtime, couldn't we experiment in the sims? We can try a melee AC, a sniper AC, an OPERATION FUCKTHEWORLD AC, or so forth. Would allow us to give a test run to a few things, see which one goes best with our playstyle.

You know, there was a pretty good reason why 'shoot them' kept being an option during the sim, and I kept pointing out that you guys never fired bullets.

    Judging strictly by the build?

Hit and run tactics. Taking advantage of the fact that you get NO penalty to shooting while moving. Never fight an opponent on their ground if you can help it. Take advantage of your relatively light weight and remember the battlefield is three dimensional.

Avoiding a melee as much as possible, because the face thing was a throwaway line, not a defining character moment. When in a melee hitting with the sword and disengaging as quickly as possible.

Remember what fighting White Glint in 4 was like? Never held still long enough to get a lock, always dancing on the edge of your cross-hairs, taking solid chips off of you and occasionally putting his sword into your kidneys?

You're basically like that. Slightly less agile, but you've got twice the armor and three times the Dakka.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/12(Tue)00:01 No.18837554
during the fight with the crazy dude with the particle cannon, we rushed face first at the core instead of doing a strafing run which would have been the smart thing to do, all because of people going "TAKE HIS FACE LOL"
    >> Anonymous 04/24/12(Tue)00:04 No.18837574
I have suggested that since the beginning, stay at mid range, if they approach keep away, if they try to run for cover or distance to snipe follow at a safe distance. We have no reason to ever stop shooting at them. If they are faster than us than we need to make sure we start with some distance, put the terrain against them and hope to hell we'll blast enough bits out of them before they get close enough. If they're big and slow stay at a distance either outside or inside their most effective ranges and continue to dakka them.

One thing I've been curious about. It's kind of a stupid side thing, and it would probably make itself clear if I just bit the bullet and bough AC5, but here goes; what's the deal with secondary weapons? Are they like hangar weapons but we can switch back and forth between them and the arm's primary at will? That's sort of the impression I've been getting.

Again, this would probably be self-evident if I were a little better traveled in the AC universe(s), it's just sorta been nagging at me. Also sorry if this has been asked already, I tend to miss the crunch threads.

    >> AC-Guy 04/25/12(Wed)00:07 No.18851444

Well, good news is I'm going to be able to get enough bank to support the project that I don't HAVE to beg for money on the Internet.

I might still do it, because a bit more money would help me put a team together, and help me get the system done faster. But the project's financial security is solid.

The downside.... wasn't able to find a place to live by my deadline. So I had to go to my backup plan, which involves housing on site for working.

Which pays about $20 an hour. Which is where I'm getting the money from, by the way. A solid summer's work could put me at about $20,000. Give or take.

But that also means that I won't be able to devote myself to this full-time in the immediate future, and means that until I get an internet hook-up, I won't be able to run the quest or do these crunch threads. And then when I can, it'll only be a couple of times a week, not every day.
    >> AC-Guy 04/25/12(Wed)00:11 No.18851496

Actually, we're going by the definition of earlier core games: the secondary weapons are smaller guns for ' just in case' your regular weapons are damaged and/or run out of ammo.

You can't switch them out because of storage capacity issues: your full-sized rifle won't fit in your pistol's hip-holster.

They're called called shots, they exist but I'm still working on rules, and the dashing.... it's complicated, and still under development.

I hate that I don't have real answers, but this shit isn't even as Alpha build of the system yet. It's not even half-done.

No problem, I figured I'd ask since you were taking questions plus I wanted to look into playing our mid range role better. Considering Alex doesn't lose accuracy for shooting while boosting I was wondering if we got a def/dodge bonus while boosting that could help us out.
    >> AC-Guy 04/25/12(Wed)00:20 No.18851639

This probably has to do more with the fact that I've actually had to support myself doing improv acting and writing short stories than actual rules.

It's not 'gets a bonus' and more 'removes a penalty'. There's a difference. It's subtle, but it's there.

The curve is decent. 3d100, roll low. Target numbers range from about 60 to 40 plus modifiers for circumstance. opposed rolls are just AC-Guy rolls 1d100 and we try to beat it.
Of course with the way /tg/ dice works he'll roll a 6 and we'll get three numbers above 80.

Alright, to get back to this, something like money from and endorsement isn't something I really even considered a system for.

Personally, I think that it would be GM thing.

I do however remember once upon a time playing a racing game where you got parts by accepting endorsements, and then winning money to make/buy better parts etc. It's a fascinating idea for a system, but I don't think I'll be able to do it. Not right away anyway, though it would make an interesting idea for supplement work.
    >> !UdzMmUq0Oc 04/25/12(Wed)15:05 No.18858044
    I don't know WHAT you're talking about.

I mean, it's not my fault other people are slower. I only actively tried to get in first once, maybe twice. To, personally, hilarious results. I mean, I do feel kinda bad about failing it, but can't help but laugh that they were both just over the targets you'd rolled.

If not an actual endorsement system, perhaps guidelines, based on pilot rank, arena standings, and the endorsing corp.
So, as an example off the top of my head, Rank A pilot with good arena standings gets an offer from Big Corp R for 500k, while a Rank C with equivalent standings might get offered half that.
    >> !UdzMmUq0Oc 04/25/12(Wed)15:12 No.18858103

It's not a terrible idea, all said and done, problem is that I would need to make RULES for that.

Maybe simple rules, but still more RULES. I don't have a problem with lots of rules, hell I fucking love GURPS, but the more time I spend on those rules, the less time I have for shit like Hit location, damage charts, etc. To write rules for something easily covered by GM fiat.

The problem is there's a lot of potential variable in there. Even if I wanted to stay mostly hands off, I need to at least point out how certain factors might affect them, if only from a 'theoretical' standpoint.

I'll see if I can work something in at some point, but it'd be a fairy low-priority thing.

So I had an idea pertaining to our desire for pole-arms, I was thinking rather than having an easy broken always repairing type, why don't we get basically and container for one of our back slots with expanding disposable lances in it, we could take like ten of them into combat, kind of like the heat rods on a stick or ones that detonate they'd be light and fairly easy to use for us with our speed, we just pull one out shove it down someones throat in a charge and then move on

    >> Anonymous 04/26/12(Thu)04:43 No.18867739
Playing it smart, as long as we yell at the jokers/kaminas and make sure we go pragmatic we ought to be able to pull it off. It'll take some dedicated effort but we ought to be able to.

As for rolling well, we might be able to do that and given how vulnerable his AC is to damage and how much firepower he's packing it'll be a very quick fight. Quick fights are better for us than long ones and it makes our fate point use more efficient. I think we have a pretty good shot.

There is a problem that this is probably not the only round we'll have to fight if we win, and Dave has lost his legs so we're going to have to sub in.

    >> AC-Guy 04/26/12(Thu)16:46 No.18872509

Seeker missiles. Seriously, he had like 5 dedicated accessory slots to MISSILES.

Also additional plating modifications. Those tank treads hold close to three times the weight your legs do, and he pretty much filled it to the BRIM with missiles and additional armor.
    >> AC-Guy 04/26/12(Thu)18:03 No.18873404
Also, on a semi-related note: I'm gonna see if I can maybe get this thread to an earlier start today. Just so that I KNOW we'll be able to do this fight today. And maybe the next one.

But also because circumstances keep making these threads shorter, meaning that the rate of the game has slowed drastically. Of course, that's also due in part to a much greater focus on the characters than I had intended.

Seriously though. Took three threads to wake up, and go to the Arena fight. When the quest started, 3 threads had us get laid, have our home destroyed, throw-down with Nine-Ball, and surf a nuclear explosion. Granted, the main quest is still 'warming up' and introducing major characters. We're still a couple chapters out from where everything starts getting fucking crazy. And from THERE it's several chapters to the end, assuming that you don't get killed first.

Heya, I've been reading / lurking / reading in archives every chapter of your quest since i first caught wind of it during the third chapter, and I wanted to say:
thank you for running such an awesome quest thread! the system you're trying to build sounds amazingly awesome, fairly simple to grok, and you've made up several characters that are just plain INTERESTING, not to mention funny, which is hard enough to do on it's own!

keep up the awesome work, you've totally got your goal of most continuous daily threads, gogogo!

I has faith in you. you deserve it.
    >> AC-Guy 04/27/12(Fri)18:48 No.18888548

Yeah, I WAS going to go 'rules light' but it just didn't work with AC: half the fun is playing with options in the garage. Making the 'perfect' build.

So I'm approaching this from a different angle: instead of going rules 'light' I'm going rules 'simple'. The entire game is built around a handful of straightforward concepts, and everything plugs into that system.

So while there might be a LOT of other things available, you could sit-down with a pre-made character and be able to play the system within ten minutes.

Also, I think once I take the crown for most threads, I'm going to take a little break before this kills me.

Then do another sprint when LG inevitably breaks mine again. Real competition is Zeon Quest. If I even go that long/that big/that many threads, I will feel like I've seriously accomplished something.
    >> srwaddict 04/27/12(Fri)20:01 No.18889226
Yeah, I was in on Zeonquest from the start as well, funny how that works, lol.
I have a friend who is trying to do much the same thing you are he's working on a mecha-oriented tabletop RPG system, focusing mostly on reals, but hes started on super robot anime as well now.

do you think you could put up some of the stuff you have so far for your rules system on say, a google docs? that would be really awesome of you, both for easier reading / copypastaing, and so that people could comment on them a little easier as well. then you could just paste the gdocs link at the start of each thread / crunch thread and ta-da, you don't need to have 3-5 posts for the rules every time you start a crunch thread
    >> AC-Guy 04/27/12(Fri)20:27 No.18889469

I COULD.... but there's some problems with that.

Firstly: the rules are nowhere near complete or solid enough to share. Hell, I don't even have completely solid rules for a 'health bar' yet.

Secondly: The rules that DO exist are kinda scattered around, since it's easier for me to assemble PIECES of a system, and then assemble them into a coherent form. Like building an engine: It's all precisely engineered in pieces, and then carefully put together. Trying to put it into a coherent form NOW would actually be counter-productive for me.

Thirdly: If I'm shooting for an eventual commercial release, I'm not sure how much beta/alpha rules I feel comfortable putting out. I know that some people with giant piles of money would rather use a free copy of the 99% finished Beta release for free than part with the 20 something dollars for the core rule book, or even five bucks for a PDF copy.

Finally: Some of the upcoming plot twists I've got planned will require the players to NOT know certain things or it'll ruin the impact. And even if I were to exclude them, it would be either an obvious hole they could easily fill with guess work or too incomplete to be worthwhile.

Honestly? If I'm running a game on what's currently barely functioning rules, I would much rather keep the mystery and excitement alive then hand a way to horrible break it to fucking /tg/ of all places with a pretty bow and a nicely penned note that reads: 'please destroy my testicles'.

Don't get me wrong, I love you guys, but you munchkins aren't getting a damn thing out of me remotely like a pdf until we're in beta country. THEN the crunch threads will take on a form other than questions/answers and general discussions.

If you want to put it into a pastebin or something, cool. But that's where I'm gonna draw the line for now, other than normal Q&A. Feel free to add any of the other examples I type to that in another section.

Actually, dividing them up according to their examples would probably be the best way of doing it. Then again, up to you if you want to do it that way.

    >> srwaddict 04/27/12(Fri)22:27 No.18890838
that was kind of what i was talking about. just condensing all the stuff from the first three general crunch /QnA threads into a pastebin or Gdocs. god no i don't want your whole pre alpha notes/build, especially not somewhere online where someone in a game company could snatch it away from you and release it first. sorry if that's what it sounded like, but no way man.

i was just hoping for a way to condense these first three threads so that when i try and tell my friends there's a guy running a quest thread as a way to alpha build his game system, i can point em to just one url instead of the entire archive to get started.

no worries, keep up the awesome work / storytelling! and as someone who's DMed for about a decade, it is HARD ASS WORK, especially to the crazy prepared lengths you go, and the tolerating of people doing "I CHOOSE THREE OF THOSE OPTIONS"

Yeah, that was what made me abandon the last quest I ran on /tg/. The absolute WORST one was when they were asked to go down the left or right-hand path, with a massive cliff separating them.

/tg/ then collectively chose the THIRD option: walking straight off the cliff between the two routes. When one of their NPC friends grabbed them and pulled them back up, SAVING THEIR LIFE, I was accused of 'railroading'.
