We are LIVE, everybody!

For those of you not in the know, this is FIST OF SHADOW QUEST, a martial arts/magical assassin quest to find your master in a strange world you know nothing about. You are Shun, apprentice of Sifu Tong, master of the ancient art of assassination – The Fist of Shadow. It’s a style that emphasizes quick, focused movements to quickly eliminate an enemy and use his force against him.

The old threads are here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Fist%20of%20Shadow
It’s getting a little longer, but it shouldn’t take too long to read if you’re interested!
>>

Last time we freed Jeanne, rode a Beholder, killed the SHIT out of Richards, and got paid by High Master Blaine. He taught us how to store items in the Plane of Shadow and gave us 75000 gold. After that, we unlocked the secrets of the Shadow Sun and the next tier of techniques. We then rounded up Khan, Erin, and Jeanne to get a travelling party going. Where are we going? Who the fuck knows! I don’t.

UPDATED! Here's a list of techniques you can learn/already know: http://pastebin.com/WtP9UKEJ

Inventory: 5 wooden shurikens, 1 dose of Heaven Berries, 385 gp (86914 in the bank), a pendant of Ward Fear, two medical kits, about ten feet of rope, 3 healing potions, a watch, and a compass, 5 masterwork throwing daggers, belt of GO FAST.
>>
>>19101798
>Inventory: 5 wooden shurikens

Jesus Christ, can we finally get rid of this shit?
I mean, we already have 5 masterwork throwing daggers

Also, we need to buy more healing potions. I think having total of 12 would be alright (4 for each person)

She plays outside behind her home under the warmth of the Shard floating above. Her brown hair waves as she runs around, full of energy. On a nearby rock, a dark-skinned baby watches her silently. For a baby, he sure is quiet, but the girl doesn’t care and plays with a shiny pendant.

Mother and Father told her to play while the grownups played with the strange new man in town. She thought he was really nice, he liked to play with her when she asked, but her parents told her to stay away. She didn’t know why, but she obeyed. So here she was, minding her own business. She thought of the cool gadget the man made for her yesterday, a little box that played a tune when she opened it! It was soooo pretty! After an hour of playing, though, she got bored and wandered off to find the man again. The grownups can’t tell her what to do if they don’t find her!

Soon enough, she wanders to the middle of town. Hey, is that the man on a stick? Oh, she knows what this game is, don’t they run around him while singing? But… nobody seems to be singing. And what’s that he’s wearing? It looks weird…

Screams pierced the air as they lit the stick on fire. What are they doing that for? She’s surprised to see the man in pain. Fire didn’t hurt her, why was he hurting? Why is he hurting? Neither her, nor her parents, nor any of the villagers, not even the man lurking in the shadows saw the black meteor hurtling through the sky headed straight for them…

For a brief moment, the girl’s being was consumed in black, searing heat.
>>
You wake up in your bed, well rested, light streaming through the windows. In the bed next to yours, Jeanne squirms around in her sleep. Is she having a nightmare?

Should you wake her up?
>>
>>19101945
Yeah, lets wake her up, gently, but be ready that she might in her hazy state instinctively lash out.
>>
Getting up, you gently nudge the slender girl…

And dodge the swing that comes afterwards. Good thing you knew that was going to happen. She awakens with a jolt, sweating and breathing heavily. After a moment, she glances around the room and sees that it’s safe. Looking at you incredulously, she says nothing as she gets out of bed.
>>
>>19102025
"Hey... are you alright?"
>>
Making sure to keep your distance, you gently ask, "Hey... are you alright?"

She blinks and stares at you, completely awake. She nods slowly, then leaves to eat, without a word. What the hell was she dreaming about?

Eh. Oh well. You’ve got the whole day ahead of you, what’re your plans?

Weren't we going to try exchange techniques with Khan?

Also, this >>19101810
Speaking of throwing daggers. What would it cost to enchant them?
Ideas for enchantment:
-Homing (much harder to dodge)
-Elemental damages like:
*Fire
*Lightning
*Cold
*etc
-Explosion (the dagger explodes like a grenade when it makes the hit but doesn't get destroyed)

It would better to have these answers in OOC rather than visiting the enchanters and wasting time talking to them.
>>
>>19102117
What do you want to give Khan in exchange?

And yes, you can enchant it with pretty much anything. Baseline is 1000 per dagger, 2000 if you want some really crazy shit like explosions.
>>
lets teach him him the phoenix stance
>>
>>19102127
Well, it wouldn't be exactly skill exchange because our version requires Shadow Fist Style, I was thinking of trying to teach him about Shadow Boost but adapted for his style.
If nothing else, we can teach him the philosophy behind it and he should be able to adapt it with his style. It would probably work only when he is under an influence of a shard but it would be a great boost for him.
>>
>>19102127
Lets enchant one dagger with "Homing" (for hard to hit targets), one with "lightning" (for extra damage) and one with "Explosions" (for many targets or a powerful target"
>>
>>19102138
>>19102158

Can we teach him both and get two skills in return?
>>
>>19102178
It's only fair.
>>
>>19102185
Alright, lets do it. Start with the Phoenix Stance.

I think we could teach him Blinding Strike too, also adapted for his style. Instead of darkening the vision, his would do the exact opposite. He would blind by using light.
>>
>>19102204
Your Blinding Strike works by shadows creeping into their eyes when you hit them.

Fire... can't really do that.
>>
just phoenix stance

>>19102252
Technically, it can.
Okay, so searing a dude's eyesockets out wouldn't be the same thing, BUT STILL.
>>
Another thing, now that we have a pocket space, we should fill it with essential gear.
Things that I have thought about:
- Food/rations, preferably non-perishable or at least which have long expire date. Including salt, pepper, sugar and spices.
- Sleeping bags and tents (x4), towels, etc
- Water (in canteens or leather-skins). 20 liters should be enough?
- First aid kits (for if potions are not enough or for just minor wounds)
- Antidotes (x4), alchemical or medical
- Practical knives (x2). I know we can summon them but if our companions need them.
- Assortment of tools (hammers, saws, screw-drivers, etc)
- Warm clothes and rain clothes
- Torches and lanterns (and oil for them)
- Cooking gear (pots, pans, utensils and mess kit)
- Charcoal for cooking.
- Compass, map, water proof matches, flint (yeah, I know we have Khan but this is just in case)
- Several ropes, rope ladders

-.... and bunch of other things I haven't thought about.

Since the list is pretty long, I'd advise putting it into another pastebin.
>>
>>19102275
We'll see what Khan has to offer and depending on that decide if we teach him more.
>>
>>19102305
We're still not sure if things degrade naturally in our pocket dimension as they do in our world.
>>
>>19102314
We could test by putting in food that has very low expiry date. Any suggestions? Raw meat perhaps?
>>
>>19102330
People have suggested raw meat and live mice, among other things.
>>
>>19102314
They do.

What Khan can teach right now:

Animal’s Leap – Through rigorous conditioning, you are able to jump up to twenty feet into the air.
Mighty Throw – You use superior leverage to toss an opponent up to ten feet away.
Whirling Shadows - You summon a whirlwind of darkness 5 feet around your immediate person, which slices enemies in that range.
>>
>>19102349
Animal Leap and Whirling Shadows please.

In exchange for Phoenix Stance and Shadow Boost (his version could be called Shard Boost?)

The general idea I've had for Shun's path from here is to head for the Starry Seas and see if we can't help fix the boats to make life easier for the rest of the continent. From there, we could filch ourselves and our party a ride to the Holy City, since that always seems to be how these things go.

Naturally, there will be an attack on the high seas that we repel, to the everlasting gratitude of the crew and guests of the ferry, and potential extra tchotchkies are gained.
>>
>>19102430
I'm skeptical about "fix the ship" approach but it doesn't really hurt to try. I had an idea how Shun might be able to cross the sea without paying, by using his stealth to sneak on board but that still leave 3 other people.

>>19102407
We could do things like spending time with Erin and socializing with Jeanne for example. Oh and getting all of the shit outlined here >>19102305 and enchantments >>19102171 (we should totally get that scarf enchantment too)
>>
>>19102451
So for the timeskip you'll just be chilling?
>>
>>19102451
Admittedly, I'm banking on general goodwill to see us through. After all, we're doing a major service to the continent, since damn near everyone is complaining about the exorbitant rate for ferry to one of the most important cities in the world.
>>
>>19102459
Well, since all of the rest of the time we will be undergoing vigorous training with Khan, I think we can spend few hours a day relaxing and just generally socializing. Also shopping.

Speaking of shopping, we should take Jeanne out and buy her bunch of books at a bookstore. I don't think the library will appreciate it if we take their books with us.
>>
Whirling Shadows for phoenix stance and train in the phoinex dojo during the timeskip to learn a new move or two
>>
What do you guys think of having a spar session with the master at Phoenix Style school before finally leaving this place?
Don't think we can win against a master martial artist but it would be a good practice and training against much more superior foe.
>>
The next few days are spent with Khan, training. You’ll teach him the Stance of the Cold Phoenix, and he’ll teach you Whirling Shadows. It seems fair enough. By night, you spend time with Erin when she’s not at work. You usually spend the night at the opera, cuddling the night away. One day you take Jeanne to the bookstore to grab some books. Anticipating the journey ahead, she buys a massive stack of books… with your money. Oh well, she deserves it. Of course, it’s about the same thing she’s been reading about for a week.
>>
>>19102548
What about buying all that camping gear? And possible enchantments?

No one else in favour of trading Animal Leap for Shadow Boost then?
>>

Trading one of our main buffs for a super-jump seems like a bit of a stretch to me. If you wanna do it, go for it. It's not like Khan needs to be any stronger than he already is.
>>
>>19102572
That was handled. I'm just going to assume you have whatever the fuck you need because I don't want to write that down. The enchantments are yours.
>>
>>19102587
I don't mind Khan being stronger. Him being stronger will just mean that we will have much better motivation to surpass him.
Thought you might be right, that buff is better than the leap.

>>19102599
How much money did we spend in total?
>>
>>19102615
4000 gold for the enchantments, 1000 for all the other shit, including Jeanne's books.
>>
>>19102572
fuck no

ah, phoenix style seems to compliment ours well, what with the speed and all, i hope there are more phoenix dojos wherever we go
>>
Oh, I had an idea for modification of our armor at Daedus workshops.

We should install a potion delivery system in our helmet! Then, we will have no need to remove our helmet when drinking healing potions and waste time by taking them and putting them at our lips.

The potions themselves could be installed in a compartment somewhere on our armor or behind our helmet.

Lets do it, guys!
>>
Thought of an idea to give to Blaine in order to stop the rivalry between the guilds, and allow him to have a special task force, for dealing with people like Richard.

Composed of a team including, wizard, alchemist, daedalus blacksmith, and martial artist. They can be chosen from gold tournament contestants or anyone who catches Blaine's eye.

The leaders of the guild probably won't back it up but its an idea.
>>
>>19102656
You want Shun to go and suggest that to him?
Some secret special forces unit that doesn't actually exist anywhere on the paper?

>>
>>19102736

I think it's worth it.
Though when the armor was priced at 10,000 (or wast it 12) such a minor upgrade seems kinda expensive

>probably coulda taken khan if he hadn't taken out our potion during the fight.
Yeah, that was my reasoning for the upgrade.

Drinking potions in mid-fights is dangerous and takes up action
>>
>>19102847
Exactly, and given that it heals you in seconds we'd run into a problem where you're fairly invincible unless I throw a mob at you, or start cutting limbs off.
Or you just run out of potions.

Hmmmm.
>>
>>19102861
Or a "lucky" hit disables the delivery system *wink*wink* *nudge*nudge*
>>
we probably will run out of potions
plus we usually fight all sneaky and shit so they're usually not needed. at most we run through one potion in a scenario like when we took out the manhunters.
constant healing is gonna be a very very rare thing like the tournament
>>
>>19102871

how about a limit on potions then?

Now, I think people wanted to visit Phoenix School?
>>
phoenix dojo, yes please.

hmm, wouldn't our alchemy girls know the limit or is it an individual kind of thing?
>>
What about a self repairing thing? Unless we pick up a daedalus worker who wants to make us the best armor ever, and a wizard who wants to find the best enchantment evah, we're going to need a lot of preperation.
>>
>>19103000
It's individual.
>>
>>19103012
Nanomachines?!

... those don't exist. And you can't get your armor enchanted to repair itself.
>>
>>19103053
That's a shame.
Lets hope we don't break our armor too fast.
>>
For what’s probably the final time, you’re in the School of the Phoenix Storm speaking to Master Enkidu. Clouds fill the sky as you ask him for a spar.

He guffaws heartily, “Are you sure, boy? I enjoyed seeing you in the tournament, but you’re no match for me!” You insist that you want to fight him. “Alright, then, if you say so!” Shedding his robe, you realize that he’s much bigger than you previously thought.

“Prepare yourself!” He says, but he sure as hell doesn’t give you any time to do so as he charges at you!
>>
>>19103074
Time for getting our ass handled to us!

Shadow Boost on!
EVADE!
>>
phoenix stance to brace for his charge and not get knocked on our ass, then shadow burst and counterattack
>>
>>19103053
No one ever said nanomachines.

Just tiny metal..ants, designed to repair armor. Yeah. Antnites.
>>
>>19103074
He seems to fight like Khan does. Full assault rape train with no breaks.
We should try to use that to our advantage, redirecting blows attacking from weird angles, evading, etc.
We might stand a chance for a while if we d oit like that.
>>
How did he say how the phoenix style goes? Starts off slow but then goes BOOM!
>>
It’s time to move! Bursting, you leap backwards and get ready to dodge to the right… but he’s still too fast! You barely have time to register as he grabs your arm and swings you around, flinging you away at an amazing velocity!

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii- your thought is interrupted as you feel a hand on your back… what?! How did he move so fast-

You’re flung to the right, going even faster than before! Fuck, you’ve got to do something before he keeps this up!
>>
>>19103171
SHIELD OF SHADOWS

Since dodging is out of the question it seems.

Also, Elemental Riposte
>>
>>19103171
Use shadows to change direction in mid-air, like some kind of an air platform to bounce off.
>>
Hopefully this fight inspires the students.

We kicked their asses and now their master is kicking our ass.
>>
>>19103229
Something about that seems... physically impossible. Wouldn't the platform have to be... not moving as fast as you for you to be able to do that?
>>
>>19103252
I was hoping we could make it fixed in place.
But if you say no, then it is no.

I'm just throwing ideas and seeing what sticks.
>>
You know this impact is going to hurt, so you force up a shield in front of you…

He grabs your leg, jumps into the air, spinning around, and throws you straight up! While you’re flying, it occurs to you that this may not have been the best idea. You also realize that you can see the midway point of Blaine’s tower.
And you’re about even with it.
Holy shit.

The old man beneath you jumps up to intercept your fall…!
>>
>>19103313
Bullshit. This was the best idea.
We're getting free rides all over the place.

Since he is intercepting us... turn around and try to inter-intercept him! (yeah, I'm fresh out of ideas)

>>
>>19103341
>>19103313
Shadow cloak and intercept his intercept! Dissappear in mid way.
>>
>>19103366
The idea of a Shadow Air Dash crossed my mind earlier.
>>
>>19103397
I.... what?
If I haven't explained before, let me do so now: Shadow Burst merely puts force on your limbs to make them kick/punch harder or whatever. The shadows themselves don't have any propulsion.

... I hope I'm not sciencing wrong.
>>
>>19103412
Maybe he is talking about developing a new technique?
Might be cool.
>>
>>19103412
I'm not saying Shadow Burst itself would do it. I meant a forcible propulsion of SOMETHING to change our mid-air momentum, if such was possible.
>>
>>19103421
I know, I'm just saying that shadows can't be used as propulsion, at least not enough to significantly change your direction mid-air.
>>
>>19103412

>>19103431

>>
You’ve got to stop him!

Calling your shadow from underneath you, you spread it over your body, becoming invisible as you change your trajectory just slightly! You bring your leg back for a devastating kick to Enkidu, and…

It lands! Smashing your foot into his head, he begins to spin while still flying up! Turning around, you look up, and… he’s sailing down towards you! Shit, you’ve got to find a way to not die from this fall and still get away from him in time…!
>>
>>19103506
Well damn.
We're not going to die from the fall, I think but still turn shadowburst back on and use shadows to cuchion your fall.

Lets do the Batman trick >>19103476
Fill shadows between our arms and body and spread our arms.
>>
ok, how about we grab him with our shadow, bind him, connecting him to us, and spin him below us, then as we get closer to the ground we get in close to him so he can cushion us.
really though, i'm worried if it'd kill him and wonder if we should put a shadow cushion for him. i mean when we used it ourselves it fucking broke so ....
>>
>>19103506
Use this
>>19103476
It will slow our descent and allow us to change direction.
>>
>>19103586
Hah.
I doubt this fall will damage him, let alone kill.
>>
You focus, spreading your shadow between your outstretched arms... and it works! You slowly descend to the ground while Enkidu drops to the ground like a rock, dust and dirt flying upon his landing. One of the disadvantages of gliding, you’ve noticed, is that it’s pretty easy to tell where you’re going to land.
You notice this as Enkidu is already jumping at you, ready to strike!
>>
>>19103606
ah, that's good to hear
in that case, get the bindings on him and grab him from behind, then make a bunch of aerodynamic shadows attached to us to speed us up and increase the speed we hit the ground by several times

i don't know if we can win this but we're sure as hell going to make him remember this little spar of ours
>>

He's in mid jump. That means he probably cannot change the direction he is going.
Turn off our gliders for an abrupt descent then turn it on again to free-dive at a different angle when we're at safe height, remove it again and fall down using shadows to cushion our drop.
>>
Dropping under Enkidu, you jump up to deliver a crippling blow to his neck…!

You barely have time to register how quick his reactions are when he grabs your hand before it even gets close and flips you, midair, into the ground, breaking quite a few bones. Fuck, that hurt. Standing over you with a big grin on your face, the wrinkled old man says, “Well, Shun, looks like you’ve got a bit of training to do!”

You’re in too much pain to really say anything.
>>
WELP, TIME FOR WORK, I'LL BE BACK LATER
Think about what the fuck we're gonna do next.
>>
give him a yawn and ask if he'd teach you a few techniques as soon as your bones mend

"Oww..
Yes, yes I do." Take of our helmet.

Smile. "Thanks for the sparring session. I think I understand what Khan says about being defeated, It is educational and motivates one to strive for more."

"Any chance you can teach me something before I leave?"
>>
>>19103713
Lie on the ground in pain for a bit. I do have a lot to learn, thanks for the lesson, it taught me quite a lot. You have once again reinforced a lesson I know well, do not antagonize the old martial artist with a smile. Do you do this sort of thing often?

We should start testing our shadow compartment, put some raw meat, some bread and a mouse of some kind to see how things fare in there.
>>
i don't suppose we could stitch our bones back up with some shadows?

Eh. Healing potions are cheap enough. Lets just drink one and ask for some lessons if he is willing to share.

Also, I've realized that, like, nobody ever says anything about the flashbacks I begin the quests with. Should I just stop that?

Not that I know of. Given that there aren't negative effects for short term keeping of animals in our shadow box we can move on to long term testing, we want to make sure it's absolutely safe before we try to give Khan a secret entrance to DYNAMIC ENTRY from.

You should know that the suptg archive might not catch your thread. if you have 4chanx, you should be able to catch the foolz archive of it when it 404s.

Just thought you should know. The code switch fucked around with the script.

You roll around on the ground a bit. “Ugh… yes, I do.” The old man above you laughs as he takes out a vial from his coat on the dirt and throws it over to you. After a bit of finagling with it, you drink the healing potion and let it work its magic. "Thanks for the sparring session. I think I understand what Khan says about being defeated, it’s educational and motivates one to strive for more."

Enkidu nods. “Defeat is the greatest teacher, is it not?” You can see why it is now.

You grin at the old man. “You have once again reinforced a lesson I know well, do not antagonize the old martial artist with a smile. Do you do this sort of thing often?”

He laughs heartily as usual. “What, thrash a young welp?” He grins a toothy smile. “I do it every day, my boy.”

You smile at his crack. "Any chance you can teach me something before I leave?"

“For you? Of course!”

NEW TECHNIQUE LEARNED!

Baffling Defense – You adopt a strange stance, which makes your opponent hesitate for a moment, allowing you to get in a critical strike.

Decaying Grasp – You land your blow with such force that you immobilize your target.

Foolish Opening – You feign an opening, guaranteeing your next strike.
>>
>>19108427
Not Decaying Grasp, we are going to be able to pull of about the same thing with Death's Hand, we have a good opportunity here, let's not spend it on something we'll be able to get elsewhere.

I'd say Foolish Opening, I like Baffling Defense but Foolish Opening gives us a pretty much guaranteed hit with Blinding Strike or any of the other status effect shadow techniques we get in the future, giving something like paralysis, blinding or other weakening effects a guaranteed hit is so very useful.
>>
>>19108427
Foolish opening, with some of the attack amplification we can throw into a strike this one is a goldmine.
>>
You agree to learning Foolish Opening. It’s actually easier than it looks… or are you just getting better? Hm, it’s hard to tell at this point, but hey, at any rate it just takes the rest of the day to learn it. Bidding Enkidu a final farewell, you leave the School of the Phoenix Storm as the black orb looms in the dark sky above.
>>
>>19108599
Get some sleep in tonight. Figure out where in the hell we're actually going, we don't have the cash to have 4 people take the boat. Well we should first take a trip to the shining sea, our Sifu said where light and water converge, we have no clue if we have to get to the Holy City to find that place. It'll be fun trying to convince people that the Darklands will be a fun romp through the woods.
>>
Heading in for the night, you round up the gang the next day, ready to finally get a move on to the Starry Sea.

Standing outside the marble walls of the city of Terec, you all begin your journey east to the sea. The first couple of days are fairly uneventful- Khan sings the whole way through, somehow not repeating any song, Jeanne marvels at her surroundings, especially the Shards, and Erin chats with you on and off. However, the night before you’re set to arrive in the fishing village where the boat to the Holy City is said to dock, you spot something strange.

Stars above lighting the small forest you’ve made camp in, the black sun, as you’ve come to call it, hangs in the sky. Off in the shrubs, a few yards away from the camp, lies a bush… are those Heaven Berries? You’d know that distinctive white color anywhere! It is!
>>
>>19108805
IF IT'S THAT FUCKING MIMIC FROM THE UNDERGROUND JUNGLE
Keep a shadow machete handy.
>>
>>19108805
Investigate very carefully. Circle around it with our cloak of shadows on being careful to make no noise. Make sure it isn't a trap. Throw a few wooden shurikens in the bush to see if anything is hidden in it, I say wooden shurikens because they're useless but whatever is in there might not be harmful, take every single precaution possible before picking them.
>>
You’re a little paranoid since you’ve fallen for this trick before. You call up a shadow machete and a wooden shuriken, which you throw into the bush to make sure it isn’t alive… and it isn’t. No more than your average bush. Cloaking, you slowly stalk around the bush to make sure it isn’t trapped… and it doesn’t look like it is. If so, then it’s a very clever trap.

Slowly walking up to the bush, you grab a Berry and pluck it… and an explosion of pain wracks your head! Gah… what?! Looking around, a dark, shimmering cube of… something is surrounding you! Fuck, you couldn’t detect this magic at all, how?!
>>
>>19108883
Flail our personal shadow. Try and loose ourselves from this shadow Gelatinous Cube.
>>
>>19108883
Damn traps, does the world have particular objections with us getting berries. Okay stay calm and investigate. How big is the cube?

Poke the cube with a shadow tendril, see what happens, prod it with a stick or knife. See how far it reaches below us if we aren't standing on it. Try manipulating its shadow.
>>
>>19108883
WE SHOULD NEGOTIATE WITH THE CUBE.

...

Or we could stick it in the dark dimension
>>
File: 1337060129935.jpg-(5 KB, 123x190, jackcreed2.jpg)

You quickly hack at the wall with your machete…. And it just stops. It doesn’t bounce, but it just… stops. Poking it, it feels… solid. Like solid air. There’s no texture, no temperature, no reaction, it’s just a wall. Thinking that you can dig your way out of this, you begin to hack at the ground, and not an inch under the dirt is another wall of the cube. Shit. You look around for a shadow, but… it doesn’t have one. Whatever this thing is, it isn’t alive.

A hawk screeches next to you. Turning around, you see him… the man from the church. Clothes dusty and worn, he tips his hat up, unobscuring his grim, dark eyes. He stands, crossbow at the ready, teeth gritted, waiting for you to try anything.
>>

Since we couldn't detect this kind of magic, and while we also cannot detect shadows as magic, I'm sort of led to believe that this prison is made up of our own power/shadow. Althought I'm probably over-thinking this.
>>
You look at him, trying not to betray any emotion. "Huh. You.” He sneers at your greeting. "You mind explaining yourself? This is rather elaborate for a bear trap, and last I checked, I'm no brown bear."

He spits on the ground. “You killed my family, tore it apart. I’m just returning the favor.” What the hell is he talking about?
>>
>>19109137
"With all due respect, sir, not counting our chance meeting in that chapel months ago, I have never seen you before in my life. You must have me mistaken for someone else."

>>
You’re a little confused. “I honestly have no clue what you're talking about, you sure you have the right guy?” He spits again.

“Positive.”

He can’t be that positive. "With all due respect, sir, not counting our chance meeting in that chapel months ago, I have never seen you before in my life. You must have me mistaken for someone else."

His face contorts into a nasty snarl. “Not many men travel without arms or armor, even less of them have black hair, fewer have skin as dark as yours, and ain’t none of ‘em been seen around Terec.” Well… the description fits. Wait… could he be talking about…

“The Manhunters?”

His face twitches at the mention. “All good men, good men you delivered into the hands of the law. And for what?!” he roars at you, “A few coins? Some trinkets?!”

… well hell, this isn’t looking good.

Welp, guess I'm eating my words.

Still, what makes what those men did any better than what Shun did? They were definitely not saints in any capacity. Also, they struck first, and that should be clarified.

Good men do not accept money to hunt and kill known innocents. When we fought, they were trying to kill me. Even so, I spared their lives. I am far from perfect, but I am better than they were.

I'd hardly consider them good men considering they burned my house down and attacked me and my father. They attacked first and I spared their lives. Also don't they do the same thing, hunt people down for what you call trinkets and coins?

We did spare their lives, at least most of them right?

You aren’t going to take his hypocrisy. “Good men don’t accept money to hunt and kill known innocents. When we fought, they were trying to kill me. Even so, I spared their lives. I am far from perfect, but I am better than they were.”

His eyes bulge out of his head. “INNOCENTS?! We never, NEVER, touched those who were not guilty. We were vigilantes, not hitmen, and you dare to even think that you know anything about us?!” His hawk caws into the dead night. Why isn’t anyone waking up…? “I know your story… Shun. You lived with a mass murderer, was raised by him your whole life, ain’t that right?” Sifu never killed that village, he’s wrong. He wouldn’t do that. “Ain’t nobody else was around for you to know better, nobody to root out that man’s lies. Those sweet honeyed words was leaked into your ears since you were a babe. You don’t know better.” He swings his arm violently, “And you killed them! My brothers, sent to purge the world of that man’s evil!”

... no. He's wrong. You know he is.

>>
Face growing angry, you say, “Think what you will, I’ve only killed those who would’ve killed me, or those I was forced to in pursuit of the law. They were criminals and at the very least attempted to murder me personally.”

“Forced to?! IN PURSUIT OF THE LAW?” How the hell is nobody else hearing this? “Are you even listenin’ to yourself, whelp? Don’t you think about how the law ain’t done no good for no man? What we did was hunt the guilty to do what the government couldn’t, and you say you was forced to? I can tell you ain’t seen as many murderers go free as I have. I know you ain’t been around much: The law only goes so far, son. There’s only two cities in the world, and the rest of us’re on our own.” He spits venom, “So you don’t tell me shit about law, kid.” This guy has some hellish authority issues.

"Fine. You're likely right. I DON'T know the truth about what happened. Which is why I intend to find my father and ask him myself. I'd be more capable in doing that if you'd, y'know, let me go. I have no quarrel with you."

He shakes his head sliently. “But I got a quarrel with you. You’d kill a man if he murdered your father. You’ve done much worse to me. You killed the only family I had left.”

You glare at him, furious at his stupidity. “You say the Manhunters were good people, but why was the first response to someone finding them an attempt on their life? They didn’t know of my past when we fought, yet they sought my life never the less. To have your first response to someone in your way as murder tells me a great deal about your family, none of it good. "

He returns your stare. “Sometimes you gotta put a bolt in a righteous man to kill a hundred criminals. It ain’t right, but it’s gotta be done.”

Heh, quarrel, crossbow bolts. That's kinda funny.

>>
>>19109522
Nothing is ever worth the sacrifice of an innocent. The fact that you believe such is the case is the exact reason your 'family' needed to be brought back for justice.

Stop pretending to have a noble cause, you got paid to capture people illegally, you had no remorse over killing those who were not you target, and you had no idea whether the people you were hired to find had actually done anything wrong or not.

You were just errand boys at best, slavers at worst.
>>
>>19109522
You contradict yourself. First you say that the Manhunters never killed a man who was not guilty, now you say that sometimes you must kill good men in order to destroy more of the wicked. You are partially right, I have not seen much of the world. But from what I have seen is that truly good men are all too rare, and the wicked are in no short supply. Trading 1 good man for 100 bad ones is a vastly uneven trade.
>>
You’re gonna keep him talking while a shadow tries to drill through this cube of… whatever it is. “You contradict yourself. First you say that the Manhunters never killed a man who was not guilty, now you say that sometimes you must kill good men in order to destroy more of the wicked. You are partially right, I have not seen much of the world. But from what I have seen is that truly good men are all too rare, and the wicked are in no short supply. Trading 1 good man for 100 bad ones is a vastly uneven trade.”

He chuckles, a laugh without mirth. “The Manhunters were never paid to kill the innocent. And I don’t truly believe you understand the destructive force of one hundred men.”

How stupid of him. “Stop pretending to have a noble cause, you got paid to capture people illegally, you had no remorse over killing those who were not your target, and you had no idea whether the people you were hired to find had actually done anything wrong or not. You were just errand boys at best, slavers at worst.”

“You think the world is so simple, don’t you? That you sit up on your high horse, judging the rest of us when you don’t know shit about anything. You talk like you know how we’ve operated for the past fifteen years, when really, you just learned about us a couple of months ago. Your nativity and arrogance make me sick to my stomach.” Oh, just shut up, you’re in no position to talk.

giant thick wall of shadows to block his sight and fire
shadow cannonballs to his turned head and chest then have the wall sprout spikes and rush the guy
>>
No, he can’t, you won’t let him…! Calling out everything you’ve got, everything you are, you demand a tidal wave of shadows to crush him, wraps to bind him, suffocate him!

… and in the split second between the shadows leaping up at him and snaring him, he fires. You redirect the shadows to capture it or cover Erin, but… the bolt… it’s just…

Too fast.
>>
>>19109863
And that's how you keep us from gathering a party? Sheesh.
>>
>>19109863
AUGH!

I KNEW YOU WOULD DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS WHEN WE WANTED TO START A TRAVELLING PARTY!

Ok, shiiiiiiit. Did anyone wake up?

Start compressing the shadows.
>>
>>19109863
Keep him wrapped up, we'll deal with him later.

For now check on Erin, we have some degree of medical knowledge, a bandoleer of healing potions, if we can get her up to barely talking she can guide us through removing the bolt, she ought to have a greater degree of medical knowledge than us. We might be able to use the shadows as a compress or very precisely stitch stuff back together, shadow thread and needle.
>>
>>19109863
Sprint towards her, full speed. Heaven berry at the ready.
>>
shape the shadows into a giant fucking dogs head and tear into the fucker

mutherfucking wall of shadows!
or a quick cacoon to form over our girl
>>
No, no, no.

No.

No!

NO!

You compress the darkness, crushing the mysterious man in it as you sprint at Erin as quickly as you can, kicking aside a familiar canister on your path. As you kneel down to get a Heaven Berry, you hear a screech behind you, and you instinctively glance at the loud noise… and there he is again, pointing his crossbow at Khan’s head. What?! You crushed him, how is he alive?!

“I got another bolt full of poison just waiting for your friend here.” What?! No, what?!
What?!
>>
>>19109945
Ok, something wierds happening here. Don't take your eyes off of him. for a second, shadow needles at him.

Then give a potion to Erin.

>>19109945
Okay, now this is just ridiculous. No one said to release the mummification, even after crushing him. Almost everyone we've fought has some bullshit trick to get around our esoteric shadows, and it's getting really aggravating.
>>
>>19109934
That's too quick. He hurt someone we care about and has information on Sifu's past, his death will be slow, painful and informative. It's amazing how many creative uses you can find for shadows.
>>19109945
Laugh a bit, you really picked the wrong person to point a crossbow at, it'd take a lot more than a crossbow to penetrate that guy.

Find his bird, that is the target, I'm guessing it's magical somehow and probably the source of the magic he's been pulling off. And KILL THE BIRD with great prejudice.
>>
>>19109959
Protip: You didn't release your shadows.
>>
>>19109959
Also, like who?
>>
"Khan! Time to fight!" Make noise. Shout as we crush the bastard, again.
>>
>>19109945
No complete envelopment this time, try to bisect him horizontally with a tendril. We need to see if we are even hitting him.
>>
mutherfucking wall of shadows!
god in heaven
>>
You pull out a healing potion and feed it to Erin with one hand while you whip a shadow whip towards him as fast as you can! “Khan, wake up! It’s time to fight!” The bolt embeds itself into Khan’s head… and he wakes up.

“Ow! What’s going on!?”

The man is sufficiently distracted by Khan’s sheer fortitude that he doesn’t notice your whip smashing into his side, throwing him to the ground! He grunts as he slides along the dirt, shooting wildly at Khan! On full alert, Khan dodges and grabs the bolds, crushing them in his hands! Eyes wide, the interloper’s hand goes for something on his belt! You hear Erin shallowly gasping for breath below you as she wakes up, eyes wracked in pain.

Well, then, what the hell. Run him through with a shadow claymore if we're going to be thorough. You don't just execute a guy's party in front of him while they're sleeping. Call for Khan to wake up.

>>19109977
We've used our Blinding Strike twice against Khan. The first time, his keen sense of smell made up for his blindness. The second time, he outright burned his way out of the blindness and shrugged it off wholly.
Against Jeanne, even when we were forced to use some of our power, little of it save for the Elemental Riposte actually scored any damage.
Even blinded and crippled, that stone hunter from when we climbed the mountain was the closest we've gotten to dying. We nearly bled out.
The encounters in the underground jungle and the temple go without saying.
Those are the most immediate examples that come to mind. I'm not saying it's not ineffective, and it really works when it wants to, but at least while we were still using dice, everything felt finicky and unreliable. For a truly one-of-a-kind style like the Fist of Shadow (which isn't so one-of-a-kind if Blaine is to be believed), that's generally not a good thing. I know we're still learning, but it's irritating.
>>
>>19110022
Khan: so bullish, even a point-blank execution with a poison-tipped crossbow bolt doesn't phase him.
Stick with Erin; Khan will keep the blighter busy.
>>
>>19110022
Chop his belt off with shadows or bind his hands quickly, don't let him get whatever he is going for and GET THE BIRD. It's setting off all of my suspicious sensors, and I have an awful lot of those.

I love Khan's reaction to being shot point blank with a crossbow bolt.
>>
>>19110034
>We've used our Blinding Strike twice against Khan. The first time, his keen sense of smell made up for his blindness. The second time, he outright burned his way out of the blindness and shrugged it off wholly.

Khan shrugs everything off at this point.

>Against Jeanne, even when we were forced to use some of our power, little of it save for the Elemental Riposte actually scored any damage.

By then, she'd buffed the everloving shit out of herself with magic.

>Even blinded and crippled, that stone hunter from when we climbed the mountain was the closest we've gotten to dying. We nearly bled out.
Gargoyles are a motherfucker, especially since they're made of stone.

>The encounters in the underground jungle and the temple go without saying.
That was me just being an asshole.

"Light him up! Erin, stay with me. He used some sort of poison. I don't know if the berries took care of it, so you got to stay awake and focused on me, okay."
>>
"Khan! Light him up!” Turning to Erin, you hear the sounds of fire and grunting behind you. “Erin, stay with me. He used some sort of poison. I don't know if the berries took care of it, so you got to stay awake and focused on me, okay?"

She stirs a bit. “Ugh… Shun? Why does my head hurt?” You look at the bolt sticking out of her head.

“There’s a bolt in your head.”

She wearily blinks at you. “Oh. Then take it out and heal me, you dolt.” She’s… awfully nonchalant. Not hesitating, you pull out another potion as you swiftly jerk out the bolt. Feeding her the health potion, you hear the wild squawks of a bird behind you. Turning around, you throw a wave of needles at the man, who is retreating incredibly fast! Whatever was on his belt is still there, so you join Khan in the battle!
>>
>>19110109
Assault the guy, incapacitate him if at all possible. Also get his bird, it's either magical or it'll give us leverage over him. Either way.
>>
>>19110109
"Khan! Throw me at him!" Fastball special! "Then go fry that bird. We need breakfast anyway."
>>
>>19110109
We should stuff that guy into our shadow inventory, see what happens.

Make sure to get that thing on his belt. Bub.
>>
You meet up with Khan in the darkness of the forest. "Khan! Throw me at him!" Fastball special! " nodding, he grabs you and swings you around, heaving you at the grim man! Shadow joining you, spikes erupt from your hands as you sail towards him! He grabs something on his belt…

And in a caw, disappears. You land on a tree, cushioning yourself with a shadow shield. Dropping down onto the ground, you look around for tracks, marks, anything. But there isn’t. It’s like he was never there.

What the FUCK just happened?
>>
>>19110201
Did we hear a bamf? Is the smell of brimstone in the air? Most likely he teleported. Get back to the group.
>>
>>19110228
No, he was there one moment, and gone the next. No poof, no sound, nothing.
>>
>>19110201
Well he disappeared without a trace. I'm guessing he's going to come back and try to kill us, life as usual.

Get the group back together, check on Erin and ask why she wasn't particularly phased by a bolt in the head, tell them that he has a raging hate on for Shun and pick the Heaven berries.

Go back to bed.
>>
>>19110253
Sleep. But with a rotating guard shift.

And we should be attentive to Erin. We had a major scare...so we're going to be a tad clingy.
>>
Well… damn. That was one hell of a night watch.

Making your way back to camp, you stop by the bush to pick some Heaven Berries. Only enough for one dose. Dammit. You walk over to check on Erin, but she’s not moving… Oh. On closer inspection she’s fallen asleep. That’s a relief. Searching the camp, you find a strange canister… wait, you’ve seen this before, when you were attacked in your sleep back in Terec. Must be sleeping gas. Next to you, Khan braces his body and glows faintly for a moment before looking at you alertly.

“Who was that?”
>>
>>19110291
Can we tell him everything? Im tired from keeping secrets from friends.

We fastball special'd. That means, bros for life.
>>
>>19110291
Damn good question. Well I saw him at one of the temples by the city once, didn't think much of it.

He seems to have a serious grudge against me because I defended myself with great force when some friends of his, called the Manhunters, attacked me at my home where myself and my master lived. He seems to dislike my master personally, called him a murderer.
>>
You shrug at your friend. “Damn good question. Well I saw him at one of the temples by the city once, didn't think much of it. He seems to have a serious grudge against me because I defended myself with great force when some friends of his, called the Manhunters, attacked me at my home where myself and my master lived. He seems to dislike my master personally, called him a murderer.”

Khan glares towards the forest where he disappeared. “I suppose he will return.” You agree with him. He turns back to you and says, “Thank you for defending us, Shun. You should rest, you’ve earned it, my friend.” Interesting. He was rather serious about it. Checking on Erin and Jeanne to make sure they’re alright, you roll up on a bed and slowly drift into the land of dreams while Khan stands vigilant over the group.

Good show, gentlemen! That's all this round, I'm afraid.

It's about time we had a recurring villain instead of someone vaguely intimidating like Blaine, don't you think?
>>
>>19110381
Indeed, I am looking forward to jamming a spike through him and his bird's skull. That and interrogating him painfully for everything he knows about Sifu.

When is the next session?
>>
>>19110408
Friday, of course!

Like usual, I'll stick around for questions or feedback, pass out halfway though, then resume in the afternoon when I wake up.
>>
>>19110381
Oh man, I fucking knew he would either turn out to be a massive villian or an unlikely allie the moment we saw him in that church.

Is his bird actually magical? Or has our paranoia reached new heights?

Also, is Khan still gonna be our rival even though we're pretty good friends now? I always see Rivals as being Gary from pokemon.

Smell ya later gramps.
>>
>>19110555
The bird is magical, but not in the way you think. Your paranoia amuses and arouses me.

Khan is your ETERNAL rival. Eternal.
>>
>>19113121
Rival's don't help rivals with things! They beat each other up, seperate for training montages, and have rematches.

Although I suppose it is more of a friendly rivalry.

ALSO, inb4 the bird is some sort of paladin summons, cause he's some sort of cleric of zaris.
>>
>>19113143
It's less of a Gary-rival and closer to a Barry-rival.
Except with a lot more violence.
>>
>>19113155
Well, he DID attempt to ride us into the ground after throwing us in the air. Twice if memory serves.

He seems more of a fightning practice bro though.
>>
for the love of all things holy, stop teaching khan our moves!
>>
>>19113250
Why? We get benefits from it, to save us in LIFE OR DEATH SITUATIONS. Aswell as when se spar with him, there are no negatives, unless he reverse engineers the techniques we teach him to figure out how to block them, but then we should be able to do the same with the moves he taught us.
