Like sugar-coated tiger blood, Elesh's adventures continue!

You are Elesh Phryx, rogue techpriest and captain of the Sword-class Frigate 'Sword of the Omnissiah'. Staring at the small, adorable girl that just offered to sell you something, something within you stirred. Slowly bending your body to meet the young child nearer her eye level, you smile. "Hello, child. Would you like some sugar-derived products?"

The child throws her arms into the air in glee, her outfit's heavy pockets bouncing from the sudden movement. "Yay! Sugar produ-" Suddenly her eyes open to a squint, meeting your own as your mechadendrites attempt to creep forward on the edges of her vision... "STRANGER DANGER" cries the child, fleeing the reach of your mechadendrites to hide behind the plain dress of a woman speaking with Quein. Both parties look to the child as she leans around the woman and points at you. "Cog-head wants to make me a servitor! It offered me sugar products!"

Quein looks between you and the child with a quizical look. "Now I'm sure she didn't want to turn you into a servitor, Rec. Did you, Captain?"

"Of course not. I simply wished to study the rumored effects of sugar-products upon the function of a child's motor functions. For science."

Though your bluff was perfectly logical and flawless, you notice that the child and the woman she hides behind still look at you with a mild level of distain.

>>
>>19117377
Oh, come now, being a servitor is not so bad. Servitors don't have to go to school, they don't have bedtimes, and they can have all the sugar products they want!
>>
>>19117411
oh, right. I noticed your question in the archived thread.

>question i've been meaning to ask for some time now...
why do we even HAVE a MIU? usually only the titan commanders, or high level explorator magos' have them. they are not really standard upgrades... they are more expensive than mechandrites... just curious

Due to the rarity of quality bionics in the pirate base of Tortuga, most low-level tech adepts and techpriests receive only the bare minimum augmentations for the jobs they preform. Since Elesh went on the path toward being a pirate captain, Magos Banks saw fit to grant her an MIU to better interface with her ship and preform her duties.

You smile and offer the child sugar products in exchange for her offered industrial starter kit. The older woman shakes her head and gives the child a stern look. "Rec, what did I tell you about trying to trade away our cargo to strangers?"

"But isn't that how trade is done?" whines the child.

The woman sighs and pats the young one's head. "I am sorry, Captain. My sister is too eager to take on the burden of trade at times, and I'm afraid that I've just reached a deal with Captain Quein concerning my purchase of the kits from him. My sister's offer is no longer possible. I would appreciate if you would resist the temptation to convert her into a servitor, unless she is naughty, of course." Rec hides behind her older sister as Quein laughs.

"My apologies, Captain. I should have introduced Ris earlier. I'm transporting her family to Serentus V, from Xapsieh IV."

I think we had a to-do list somewhere, but I completely forgot it.

We need to take those components to the magos, get our own crew for the factory ship, set up asteroid bases in the secret solar system only we have the starcharts for, recover a starship in that system...
what else?
>>
>>19117701
He must have been confident in his ship if he had them with him during that last mission where we raided the admech.
>>
>>19117739
Oh, we also needed to get past that question the lockbox's security system asked us.
I would rather look for a way to hack the lockbox than trying to answer the question, in case it has some kind of trap that activates if you answer wrong.
>>
>>19117739
Well, we also have the power crystal the Harlequin gave us as a reward for freeing the Eldar captives that we ought to find a use for, and there's the perfectly preserved Dark Eldar corpse that hasn't been examined/servitorized yet.
>>
>>19117701
Ah, so this is the merchant you were telling me about Captain Quien.
Well, I believe that a small party is in order. Though this time it would be prudent to stay with our vessels, as the last party did not end well...
>>
>>19117801
I don't think Phryx would be so deviant and heretical as to attempt to make an Eldar corpse into a servitor. I'm pretty sure that's a very particular kind of heresy, with a very particular place in techno-hell reserved for those that commit such offenses.
>>
>>19117844
I believe that the original plan was to keep it in stasis until we find a buyer for it.

Find out more about Ris and her family. It might be good to have some semi-legit merchant contacts.
>>
>>19117911
So, seeing as we've got an industrial starter kit as well as a factory ship, can't we put these two together and get some actual business going?

We did find that system with all those asteroids and whatnot -- couldn't we use one of the kits to establish a base there, hypothetically, and the other to begin some industrial processing of this various debris?
>>
>>19117844
Well, we already employ a living Eldar as one of our crew members, with all of its abhorrent xenos life and free will left intact. And we have a cargo hold full of Dark Eldar tech we salvaged.

I'm pretty sure that's more heretical than experimenting on a dead alien.
>>
>>19118028
Oh yeah, Gruman might be a little PO'd with us for having Eldar on our ship. We should make sure Bob is kept out of eyesight when in their system...
>>
>>19118011
>We did find that system with all those asteroids and whatnot -- couldn't we use one of the kits to establish a base there

First we need to replace the crew of our factory ship with a crew of our own. We want to keep that place a secret, after all.

Right now, however, let's have a party/celebration for a job well done.
>>
>>19118028
Sure, but that's different than profaning our sacred machinery with alien essence. Humanity is, after all, the only species with true and pure souls.

You briefly consider planning a victory party with Quein, though memories of your last celebration and the large numbers of wounded that will likely die soon dissuade such ideas. "Would you happen to have any other goods for sale, Miss Ris?"

"I have a meager stock at the moment, but I have several cargos of medicinal herbs. I offered one to the Hospitallers efforts earlier, though they dismissed the notion of such things helping those that lingered before death. I do have a small amount of capital, if you'd like to be rid of some smaller goods."

>>
>>19118055
Meh. Everything we have we need. Even the crystals we don't know what they do. I mean, we know that they're useful in mechanicus cyber mantles and whatnot. So we'd probably get more profit out of selling them to the AdMech or Banks.
>>
>>19118151
Well, depending on what she's willing to buy, we might be able to offload the pile of DE small arms we have sitting around with no apparent use for.

pretty much this.
We intend to use everything in the notable unassigned cargo list except maybe the exotic booze.

>>

>>
>>19118203
I think that now is the ideal oppertunity for us to get ourselves a merchant ally. We should offer to invest in her business, that way, once we get production up and running, we have someone who can sell the stuff off to suitable buyers at a preffered percentage...
>>
The woman bows her head as you remember that you are only looking to part with questionable items. "Once I've established myself in Serentus, I do hope you'll stop by, Captain."

>what do?
>>
>>19118413
Indeed. If we're going to keep up our piratical ways, we'll need a "fence" for selling our stolen merchandise.
>>
>>19118419
"But of course. The Heavenly Forge should soon begin providing us with a variety of items that we may be willing to part with that could be useful to you..... Until then, the Emperor Protects."
>>
>>19118419
Apart from offering to invest in her business, we should check up on Magos Taylor and Wilson, then to our wounded...
Also, we should add 'medicate or Magos Biologis' to our required crew list.
>>
>>19118413
This sounds like a good idea.
>>
"I'm afraid that Captain Quein has already made such a deal to fund my initial foray, though I'm sure that you both possess certain abilities to locate hard to find items." The woman smiles. >>
>>19118559

This. We need to see what sort of role they'll be able to play in our mining and salvage work.
>>
>>19118659
>Officer is feeling vulnerable and stuck in medibay
>Send haughty Xenos to bring clothes to her
Why do you want all the named characters to hate us?

Otherwise, yeah, robes then techpriests sounds good to me.
>>
>>19118733
What would cheer you up more than having the ship's arrogant space-elf relegated to being your private butler?
>>
>>19118814
Having the ships suspiciously caring tech-priestess captain bring you a change of robes...
>>
You excuse yourself, seeking the eldar 'Bob'. Bob locates you instead as you board 'Sword of the Omnissiah'. "Julin requires a robe, locate one and bring it to her in the medicae." Bob attempts to protest, but you simply resume speaking over her. "Disguise yourself, the sisters will not look kindly upon Xenos." With a smile, you walk away from your confused xenos.

Soon you arrive at the section of barracks given over to your share of the accused heretics. Immediately the cogs upon your robe set you apart from the techpriests and adepts garbed in plain gray robes. One quickly hurries over to you as the others linger at a polite distance. "Magos-Captain Phryx, we presume? We are the ranking priest given to your care. We hold the rank of Artisan and wish to thank you for taking us into your service. How may we serve?"

>orders?
>>
>>19118863
Tell them that we inend to make some new factories soon and we are still trying to figure out what to build. Tell him the materials we have available and ask him what he and the other priests are good at.

We want to build something that our tech are already familiar with.
Also ask him where he worked and studied before he ended up with us and the same for the rest of the techpriests.
>>
>>19118938
This.

Also, ask the priest whether in the course of his work as an artisan he had any experience working with exotic locking mechanisms.
>>

>>19119140
Unless all of the techpriests are the ranking priest given to our care and have the rank of Artisan, that seems unlikely. Though I suppose they could be some kind of Borg hivemind. In which case they would get quite a shock connecting with us. Eheh.

"All present have skill in industrial works, Magos. Only we hold Artisan rank, the majority are Enginseers, though some are Lexmachanics and Transmechanics. We have experience reproducing tried and true STC orbital facilities, though we were declared a heretic for suggesting a merger of two such designs to utilize their strengths together. Before such events, we oversaw a construction team in the orbital shipyards of Feophe."

You explain your desire to set up a base of operations and your available resources to the Artisan.

"Resources are sufficient for several different combinations, Magos. Both industrial kits could be tasked toward building an orbital facility with several possible function combinations, or a lunar-based complex with dual functionality. I estimate an increased efficiency of fifty percent, for your mining vessel, if it is freed to devote itself to simply mining ore and returning it to a refinery for processing."

>orders?
>>
>>19119409
I say we turn the factory ship purely mining and transporting, we should hold off on deciding how to use the industrial kits until they have seen where we want our base.
>>
>>19119409
We still have to figure out what we actually want to make.

What is our tech limit here? As in, what is the most high-tech item we can mass produce?

Carapace armour?
Bolt weapons and bolt rounds?
Plasma weapons and plasma ammunition?
Chimeras?
Starship components?
Bionics?

Also, could they build something they are unfamiliar with if we acquired a pattern for it?
>>
>>19119409
Ask if any of them has experience crafting high-quality armour.
We need to some really good protection for our named crew. Improving the armour of our armsmen wouldn't be bad either.
>>
>>19119536
I figure that we'll need to use one of the kits to put a dock on our facility so that we can refit that cruiser hull and have a place to safely repair our fleet out of sight.
>>
>>19119562
your tech limit is determined by available STC patterns, skillset of yourself/followers, and "blueprints" you find/make (either by reverse engineering or finding non-STC plans for stuff)

you're unlikely to be able to produce the more complex stuff without the proper knowledge or STCs, though limited production of things such as non-powered armor is possible without plans. it likely won't be produced beyond generic quality, at best, though.
>>
>>19119642
That, and it will speed up transfer of goods.
>>
>>19119536
any sort of function for your base will require an ISK, building something complex (like say a repair dock) will require two or possibly more.
>>
>>19119642
Might not hurt to buy the spare from these merchants, then.
>>
>>19119672
So, step1: set up factory, start making whatever equipment sells best in the local systems, maybe even make it by order.

step2: use this money to buy STC knowledge(and other kinds of knowledge too).

While all of this is going on, we pirate around and explore.

Right now, we either go celebrate if everyone is ready or go dick around with the lockbox if everyone is not ready.
>>
>>19119707
Then perhaps we should purchase an additional kit or two before we head back to the system.

How much would an industrial starter kit cost relative to our current wealth?
>>
>>19119766

Industrial Starter Kits are generally only produced upon forge worlds, and then shipped out to planets.

Tortuga or other major trade locations may have a few, but they are considered premium goods.
>>
>>19119866
Or, in other words, we need to stay nominally legit and buy it directly from forge worlds.
Hopfully, they will be willing to sell it to us if we ever feel like buying them since we are a techpriestess ourselves.
>>
>>19119866
And here we sit with TWO such goods! Truly a wealth of wealthy wealths..... wealthily.... .yeahIgotnothing. So now the question is what to do with the ones we have.Secret space dockstarbase? What else could the do? Could we use them to help with the Heavenly Forge's work? If yes, how?
>>
>>19119918
I want to use both to make a moonbase/asteroidbase, leave the factory ship and the base there to do their thing and go off adventuring.

By the time we are done with our first adventure after that, we should have cargo holds full of stuff we can sell.
Then, rinse and repeat.
>>
>>19119707
I suppose we'll have to start with the dock alone then, and wait to build dedicated manufacturing facilities until we can acquire more ISKs.
>>
>>19119918

using 1 of your ISKs to build a refinery would double 'Heavenly Forge's production, though building any sort of dock capable of repairing ships would require both of your current ISKs.

basically, 1 ISK = 1 single-function facility (lunar/planetary mining facility, refinery, specialized factory, etc)
2 ISK = dual-function or minor multi-function facility (lesser space stations, a mining operation with refinery on-site, multi-production factory, etc)
3+ ISK = more complex facilities
>>
>giving your Artisan a consensus on what he should begin dreaming up will help greatly at this time...

unless you guys want to put this off like so many other things!

>orders?
>>
>>19120065
I think the general consensus is that we start with a space station where we can dock our ship.

I figure we can always add manufacturing capacity later, but a manufacturing facility without docking capabilities would be pretty hard to use properly.
>>
>>19120124
Yeah, this, we need a docking facility first, something we can use to bring the ship we found in that system online.

We also want to manufacture SOMETHING and we want to add more functionality later when we get some STC knowledge.
>>
>>19120124
Indeed. In orbit around the remaining planet? Or should we try to give the planet a moon/look for large chunks of rock with a stable orbit, well within the debris field (within as in, on the side closer to the systems star, not as in in the middle of the field).
>>
>>19120124
The docking thing is a dry-dock for ship repairs not a cargo dock.
I think that we should give the tech-priests time to work out what would best suit our needs while we do other stuff.
Like opening the omnisiah damned lockbox!
>>
>>19120124
Agreed. We can always add more functionality later. Getting that light cruiser back to working condition, is our current priority.
I think.

And any facility able to reconstruct that ship should be able to repair any of our ships as well.
>>
>>19120249
I'd probably want to put it out in the field.

If a random explorer came upon the system, they would be less likely to discover our base than if it was in the vicinity of the planet.
>>
"I believe a space station capable of docking and perhaps repairing at least a light cruiser will best suit my needs, Artisan...?"

"We are known as Vorth, Magos. Our cogitators shall see your needs made manifest among the stars, Omnissiah permitting."

Taking your leave of the strange Artisan, you return to your quarters. Perhaps you shall conquer the final lock of the box that has vexed you for months now...

>>
So, we have this crew on a training run on our factory ship, how long are they supposed to stay with us?

This is important because we want to get started on our space station as soon as possible, but we don't want to make it look like we want to get rid of them.
>>
>>19120655
I figure it's about time to give them back. Which means we'll need to pick up a bunch of new crew.

Tortuga, perhaps?
>>
>>19120655
Roughly 3 months, if I remember correctly.
>>
Seeing no way to bypass the lock, you grumble. In a final act of defiance, you glare at the small mechanism that is the final lock, willing it to see you as its master and yield the secrets within. With a sign, you resign yourself to playing the lock's game. "My quest is knowledge" you sigh.

A series of soft noises resonate from within the lock, piquing your interest as you eagerly wait for it to open so that you may finally claim your reward...

'What is your favorite colour?'

Your cogitators silently scream in your mind.

the sisters asked two or three months, about 3&1/2 weeks of which has passed. Your return trip to Serentus (after transferring cargo and letting your wounded recover a bit) will land you at roughly 5 weeks.

>>
>>19120762
This kinda sucks, but I would rather stick to the deal.
Just keep the factory ship doing something productive during that time. Preferably many different productive things so that the training crew get experience in a wide variety of situations.
>>
>>19120793
I think the point was that we didn't want them to see the uncharted sector we're planning to put our base, so unless we want to delay the start of our industrial operations by another month, we'll have to return the Sisters.

"My favorite colour is green."

More noises from the lock...

'Allons y?'

>response?
>>
>>19120829
Just have them do flight training in various places giving advi time to learn ship captaining. Then, if we need the ship, just get the astropath to request them. Simple
>>
Does Elesh have "proficiency: dead languages (french)"?
>>
>>19120966
Wat?

Say "Allons no"
Because that's all I can think of
>>
>>19121032
Negative.

>yes, I'm having fun with this. You should as well!

>yes, your answers matter, folks. A chaos butterfly lock, one might say...
>>
>>19120966
I assume Elesh has never heard French before and would be baffled upon hearing it now. I can only imagine her saying, after a bit of consideration, "What?"
>>
>>19120966
"Oui."

Or if we're being silly and know Common Lore (Dr. Who) answer, "Alonso."
>>
>>19121117
"because"
"you"
"rabbit"

Maybe its an anagram?
>>
You stare at the lock as it repeats the strange challenge. With no better response, you simply ask "What?"

'Its French'

The lock's internal noises this time are strangely rythmic, like a distant whining breath. How strange.

'What surrounds you?'

>response?
>Fuck this, there can't be five of these damned questions!?

"Metal, the void, and idiots. The result is opportunity."

'Cold'

Again the lock makes a series of soft noises, though this series contains a soft 'click'.

'What do you treasure?'

>response?
>>

Get close to the box to make sure nobody else can hear: "Those dear to me."
>>
>>19121590

Obviously the result of the flesh-brain again...

I'm tempted to say knowledge again.

"Why you of course, little box!"

Give it a little kiss. Blessing of the Omnissiah, and all that.
>>
Your cogitators hesitate as they calculate several answers, while your flesh brain slips a response onto your tongue. "My crew."

'Recalibration complete'

Three sharp clicks sound from the lockbox as the final inner lid slightly jumps from the case. Slowly, you open the adamantium lid.

Within you find two small objects encapsulated within shockingly new parchment, perhaps the final lock contained a small stasis field or was air tight. The objects within the parchment seem to be a pair of crystaline cogitators, though one seems to have linkages for a ship's systems installed. With great care, you inspect the emerald-like crystals of the cogitators, discovering a hidden interface port within the smaller one. An external cogitator is a strange concept, though not unheard of in ancient times.

>Jack in?
>Perhaps later...
>>
>>19121850
Jack in and let's see what all those annoying questions gave us.
>>
>>19121850
Jam it in!
>>
>>19121850
Inform athe of what we are about to do, just encase something comes up while we are busy. Then, jack in...
>>
>>19121850
Not on our own.
First, get someone else in here, preferably someone who can pull our ass out of the fire if we run into a hostile machine spirit or something like that when we jack into it.

Then, plug in.
>>
>>19121850
Anything written on the parchment? Like, "Danger, this device contains the souls of a thousand angry daemons" or something of that sort?

If not, inform Athe that we our conducting an experiment, and if we have not returned within a few hours, to come render aide.

Then plug in to the device.
>>
You utilize the ship's vox network to contact the bridge and have the acting watch captain send a runner for Athe, then center yourself. Moments later you vaguely realize that you're upon the decking of your quarters as your body spasms in a fitful mockery of your preferred reason for spasming beyond your control. Your flesh brain silently screams in terror as your cogitators are overwhelmed by the cascading rivulets of information as they form a raging torrent of data that floods your cranial cogitators. Knowledge is forcefully written upon what space remains in your implanted data cores, knowledge of the human body's functions and how they react to different therapies are written and then overwritten with colder knowledge: the art of converting a functional, sentient human mind and body to the governed functions of a servitor. You glimpse a strange series of plans for several strange vehicles as your surroundings slowly come back into focus. Breath comes in labored gasps as you feel your perspiration-soaked robe cling to your weak flesh. It is all you can do to weakly flail your bionics and mechandendrites as your cogitators recover. Helpless, you quietly study the strange plans still held within the data core as Athe enters the room and stares at you, dumbfounded. "Elesh? Elesh!"

ABOMINABLE INTELLIGENCE! HERESY!
I mean, not that I care all that much, being the Xenotech loving filthy pirate Heretek that I am, but... "Jam it in" doesn't seem like a good idea when the damn thing could overwrite our cogitators.
>>
As your cogitators and flesh brain slowly fade into a deep slumber, you manage a stupid grin at your friend.

>+skill: Servitor Conversion!

GAH.
>>
>>19122175
Can we use that thing again if we ever manage to upgrade or extend our cogitator?
>>
>>19122190
as you fade, you are only able to locate the strange plans upon the data core...
>>
>>19122175
Write down everything we can, figure out what those plans we got are, study the cogitator some more, maybe interface with it a few more times, get some memory upgrades, ship out and deliver the stuff we stole.

Also, good night

... good point.
Medicae Mechadendrite's machine spirit has gained + skill!

two times the techpriests with skill = half the time to do the job

>>19122259
luckily, you lack the facilities to convert servitors at the moment... and it would probably be better for morale if you converted non-crew...
>>
>>19122287
a bit, but most of the medical knowledge isn't very helpful for healing as much as it is helpful for "vaguely maintaining a life-like state for this fleshy bit here"

Hey, people pay good money for the Hermetic Infusion augmentation.

Anyway, the more important question is, did this thingy overwrite anything ELSE we knew?
>>
>>19122381
Well, we also seem to have access to the designs of two ancient vehicles/devices. Depending on what they turn out to be, that knowledge could be the most valuable thing we have.

Besides, servitors are fun. What's not to love about having a mob of armored mechanical zombies with chainsaw arms to send in ahead of boarding parties?
