You haven't really been in a car before, not since you were... nine, maybe, ten? You forget. You don't know much about cars.

Despite that, you can still say with confidence that you've never seen the likes of Numsang's car before. A gentle male voice tells you to keep your hand from the door, which closes by itself. Then she says 'Cote d'Or.'

'Sorry?'

'Shh.' Numsang gestures at the screen in the console, as the gentle male voice acknowledges Cote d'Or and shows its location, the directions there. Then the engine growls a little before becoming a soft background hum, and you are sliding off through the drizzle, in silence. 'So, tell me about your hand. Also, tell me about that girl you want to have sex with.'

'Huh?'

'Laura. You wanted it last night, mate, I can tell. After the sushi.' wait, wait, want it? But...

Got distracted while practicing at the mall and burned myself with some tea.

Laura might be peripherally involved in what Kevin has me investigating at the school, and she was in some other trouble that was partially my fault.

Also nice car.
>>
>>19212088

'Um... Laura... well, I'd like to do it again I suppose...? And this hand, well it's a bit of a story...'

Tell her about Lynn. Ask if someone like that is normal.
>>
>>19212088
Is there anything I can tell you that you don't already know ?
>>
>>19212173
>>19212180

You tell her the story of seeing Lynn, and then getting your hand scalded from the visions, and she bursts out in laughter for a few seconds before catching herself. That's not very nice. 'Heh, sorry. No, she does sound like a potent mind. Someone with potential... or someone dangerous.'

'In terms of Creation?'

'Yeah, and things like that. Sounds like a fuel source. Also, Dylan - next time a Psych digs your mind like I just did, you have the right to push back. You were like a limp rag there. As for Laura?'

You tell her the story about Laura too, and she nods. To be honest, you didn't even feel her entering your mind, which is partly why you didn't react. Might be the pain from your scalded hand, though, that's impairing you. 'I have this feeling Laura might be... involved, somehow, in what Kevin asked me to investigate... do you think so?'

'Man, I'm a Summer not a Spring, I don't really know these things.' Numsang says it blithely. 'But Kevin's told me that this Creation is multi-sourced, so your Laura could be one of the sources. She, or that other girl who got ditched. You'll need to look for other things. Places within the school which could be a focus of sentiment. Maybe future events with either lots of people, or few people around, that could be when a Creation appears for the first time...'

> Hmm. What do/say? Or plan?
>>
>>19212180
>>19212173
Let's call kevin now to tell him about Lynn. Num will hear the story and we won't have to repeat it.
It might be a pressing matter to Kevin too.
>>
>>19212257

Second this. Also, ask Num more about how to pinpoint a Creation. We don't actually know much, do we?
>>
>>19212248
They have a midsummer festival... it's been in the minds of some of them.
>>
>>19212248
By the way, I wanted to tell you, if you didn't feel it already, how grateful I am for this place and for allowing Laura to spend some time here.
>>
>>19212295
Oh boy time for demonic bull statue thing.
>>
>>19212248
How do Kevin and the rest get rid of Creations ?
>>
>>19212257
>>19212263
>>19212295

'I see... yeah I better call Kevin now then, eh? Also, so what... exactly is a Creation?'

'Hmm? Well... a Creation is, in general, when someone's thoughts become perceptible by other people. That's pretty much it. The thing is, people never think one thought so intensely that it becomes perceptible to others. So it's always a mass of thoughts, often tied by some sentiment. If you hate... rats, and you're always paranoid about rats, eventually other people around you might start to suspect rats in their house.

'Now that's a pretty mild case, though not to me,' Numsang shudders. 'But many things are even more intense than that. They are real traumas, great masses of incoherent thoughts that squeeze into other people's brains and drive them crazy, or make them obsessed, or even murderous. It's like those meme things, you know? But more powerful. Computers got nothing on the human brain.'

And with that, you call Kevin. Meanwhile you notice you're driving towards the Blue Spire Bridge, a beautiful, graceful suspension bridge with two tapering spires. You've never been here, you've only seen this in photos. Wow.

> More incoming.
>>
>>19212340
Could a tangible, mundane object become a Creation ?
>>
>>19212331

'Aww. Yeah I know. It's a pleasure.' She smiles at you, a lovely smile. 'Well, it's a pleasure so long as you keep it clean. When you do finally get with Laura, clean up properly.'

>>19212340
>>19212295
>>19212257

Kevin answers the phone, and you hear voices in the background, the humming of an air conditioner. 'Yep?'

You talk about Lynn, and he listens intently. 'So... is she who we're looking for? Or, like, one of the people?'

'That could be it. Who was she angry at? You mentioned she was really angry.'

You wonder... was it at someone else, her mental yelling? Or at herself?

> What answer?

You also tell him about Laura. He asks you to keep tabs on how she's reacting. 'If she's having mood swings, or seems... out of sorts, or is acting oddly, keep a look out. Do you know that Marina girl?'

'Nope, just heard about her.'

'Man, maybe we need to arrange for you to sneak into Mayne Parish...' Kevin sighs. 'Sorry, mate, it's just that Spring Congregation is really busy at the moment. Can't spare any hands...'

> What do/say?
>>
>>19212415
>When you do finally get with Laura, clean up properly.'
Tell Kevin that Laura's fog apparently prevents Numsang from reading that we did have sex with her.
>>
>>19212349

'Oh, well there's some ways. Mostly the Free Comm deals with the symptoms, tries to clear the Creation by wiping it from human perception. It's a bit like a psych fight, actually, since we can see Creations easily.

'Sometimes we have to deal with the symptoms as well, by actually wiping or taking out the thoughts of the source. That... doesn't happen a lot, unless the Creation is dangerous. But the Bestowers and their people do it, since humans are just cattle to them.'

She says that last sentence with undisguised disdain.

>>19212365
>>19212340

'Not themselves. But many Creations need an anchor in reality, a place or an object. It's easier to imagine a dragon if you're looking at a toy dragon, or sitting in a cave. Are you hungry, actually, Dylan?'

'Um... not really, why?'

'Be more enthusiastic, man. We're going to a nice restaurant for brunch...'
>>
>>19212415
She was angry at her friends as far as I could tell, calling them useless and that they couldn't even fuck. She might not like her friends that much under the surface.

As for sneaking in just get me an electrician or a janitorial uniform and I can get pretty much anywhere. Nobody pays attention to you then.

So about Laura, where you there last night or did you just know I wanted it last night and you weren't able to glean the aftermath from my skull?
>>
>>19212485
Second this all the way
>>
>>19212415
It sounded like she was reminiscing the words of someone else, probably a father figure or something like that - well, no, actually, maybe not a father as it belittled her sexual performances, someone who was angry at her for not being as talented as she actually seems to be.
>>
>>19212509

Going with this, actually.

Or maybe it is a father figure. Now that'd be fucked up.
>>
>>19212485
No... it wasn't addressed at her friends, since she defended herself from the reproaches, saying that she could fuck like a tiger.
>>
>>19212485
>>19212537
Let us at least use the uniform idea then
>>
>>19212537
Maybe it is, because she's undoubtly fucked up.
>>
>>19212573
Okay. I wanted to be the adolescent girl, but I guess a cleaning uniform will let us move around more easily when the girls are supposed to be in class.
>>
> Go with feeling anger with herself, or angry at someone else?

You suggest the janitorial uniform thing and cite your obfuscation ability. Kevin nods. 'That could do. I'll arrange something.'

'Or maybe give me a girls' uniform?'

There's a moment of thought. 'That'd be easier to arrange, actually.'

> What do you want to dress up as, you cosplaying psych?

>>19212485

As for Numsang, she chuckles. 'I dug it out of your mind just now.' She doesn't sound apologetic in the least.

'So you could read that I wanted it... but not that I did it?'

'That you what?' She looks at you again, as you look over the river and the bridge. Is the river actually this muddy? Man, that spoils it somewhat... 'don't try to boast to a woman ten years your senior, Dylan. Much less a Psych. What you did is you both got naked, and then Laura lost interest, and you fought, and then you went to sleep alone.'

Wait.... what?

> What do/say?
>>
>>19212624
Are we going crazy or what? Look visibly confused
>>
>>19212651
We no we woke up with Laura what the hell is she saying? Is she getting confused with the nightmare Laura had and we dream link or whatever the dream was?
>>
>>19212675

Wait, but in the morning we didn't wake up with Laura. We were in bed, she was in the hall.

So maybe Num's right...?
>>
>>19212685
Shit weird maybe that what happen. Well it's official Dylan is crazy now
>>
>>19212624
No... Very honestly, my memories say otherwise.
Laura has this problem, though... Because of an aborted earlier relationship (as far as I digged), she is uncomfortable with sex a fogs up when she gets aroused... maybe it affected me ?
>>
>>19212697
Nevermind
"You're... you're back in the world. Laura is naked, beside you, and her fingers are digging uncomfortably into your shoulders. Your arm is a mess of tears and snot from her as she sobs and trembles. " That's what happen
>>
>>19212711
At the very least she was naked NEXT to us
>>
>>19212624
Both would work, one for wandering the halls unnoticed and the school uniform for talking to people.

Numsang, we may have a problem, I seem to be remembering things very differently from what you seem be be trawling out of my brain. That and your versions is wrong considering that I woke up with her on me.

Give her our story, find where the breaking point is and try to find why.
>>
>>19212624
I'd prefer a girl's uniform, but that won't help us if we're noticed and told to get to class or to someone's office for skipping.
I'd go for the other uniform. And maybe that looking older is easier that appearing to be another gender entirely.
>>
>>19212555
>>19212509

'She sounded angry at... herself. Or at least, someone else was angry at her. Maybe... her dad or something? But oh. She was saying she could fuck like a tiger.'

'Well, if it's her dad, that's prime Creation material,' Kevin says softly. 'It's the things they see as being most alien and farthest out that affect them most... maybe you'll need to get in touch with her somehow. Maybe you can be the Midsummer Festival staff or something, even!'

This seems a bit too much involvement in a girls' school for someone who's not even a girl...

> What do/say? Agree, suggest...?

>>19212721
>>19212711
>>19212699
>>19212697
>>19212675

'Um... no offence, Num, but I'm damn sure we had sex...' you tell her about that, and she nods.

'Oh, no, I wasn't talking about the afternoon! I was talking about that little salmon on the leg teasing thingie. I don't even need to dig to see your residual arousal, you poor dear.'

'But...' oh, that's... you try to remember the evening.

> Roll d100.
>>
>>19212728
Second this maybe the dream memories are mixing in
>>
>>19212711
>>19212721
> Well, just to clarify, sex was indeed had. All that panting and the fog you had in the dream was Laura, as was the feeling of pleasure permeating everything.

I'm not sure I could act well enough. If I want to talk to her, I think I'd better try to meet her outside, first.
>>
>>19212767
If we actually want to talk to students there about upcoming events and the like we could end up crossdressing if we want to do that on school grounds. No matter how good our obf is, people don't talk about festivals to the electrician. Our best bet is to talk with them outside of school, crossdressing might work but it depends on how convincing we are and our first response to a problem shouldn't be to put on a skirt.
>>
>>19212851
Oh god Dylan the cross dressing student no one will let us forget this EVER and if the disguise drops well BAM all the norms will never let us forget it either
>>

>our first response to a problem shouldn't be to put on a skirt.
It shouldn't ?
>>
rolled 57 = 57

Man I don't even remember what happen then no wonder I got all confused
>>
>>19212821
>>19212815

As the car silently glides over the road and into a puddle, spraying water on a whole lot of people walking along the street, you feel the spike of anger as you pass, and then it clicks.

The salmon on Laura's leg. You ate that. Then you kissed her legs. Got her top off... tried to take her pants off, but she stopped you suddenly.

Then your eyes widen slightly as you remember what you tried to do. You attacked her. You tugged at her hair, pushed her off the couch, and clambered on after her while she groans. 'Dylan, please... Dylan, don't!'

'I want to fuck! I want you!' That's not your voice. That's not...

'Just give me a bit of...' oh god, did you do that? Did you slap her? You sat on her leg as she tried to buck you off. It was only when she started screaming and hitting you back that you jumped back and got into a verbal argument.

'I... what?'

'You what?' Numsang isn't digging in your brain now.

>>19212851
>>19212828

Kevin says he'll get you a school uniform, but no shenanigans please. And he agrees with your plan. 'I'm sure you can sort it out. Just be careful, okay? Sorry for letting a novice like you do this. We normally are a bit more thorough with our guidance, but... busy.'

> What do/say?
>>
>>19212889

> I'd liketa hear ye say that to a Scot, laddie. Go on, I dare ye!

Of course, you're not a Scot, so...
>>
>>19212913
Wow really damn Dylan is a rapist now. Well attempted rapist. Still doesn't sound like us a Laura was still there ther afterwards. You would think she would ditch us
>>
>>19212957
Hell she even help us with our hand when we got back from the mall. At the very least she would act cold to us. What the fuck happen?
>>
>>19212976
>>19212957
Wait she was cold never mind. Damn we gotta distance our self from her now
>>
>>19212976
Well she did act somewhat cold at one point. Not immediately after whe woke up, though.

Still, even if we had lost control of ourself, would we have been violent ? And violent with enough logic to slap her instead of just trying to take what we wanted ?
>>
>>19212913
Holy shit...Uh, act appropriately ashamed and disgusted with ourselves, put head in hands, et cetera. No idea what to do beyond that, but we certainly don't want to seem like "that guy" to Nutmeg.
>>
>>19212913
This doesn't at all sound like something we'd do. There is a problem here.
>>
>>19213058
With us at least. Dylan is going crazy from all the stress
>>
rolled 65 = 65

>>19213041
We shouldn't need to put on an act... But the first thing I'd feel as Dylan would be incredulity. And I'd try to review my memories in detail. Rolling for this, too.
How could we forget that ?
>>
>>19212913
There is something seriously fucking weird going on here Numsang, to my best knowledge I don't act like that and never have before. Do you have any fucking idea what is happening here?

As for Kevin, tell him it's fine, but make sure the uniform fits properly.
>>

>>
>>19212976
>>19212957

You... you really don't know. Laura did seem a bit colder, but as you said, she bandaged your hand for you, and even sat next to you and watched the telly for an hour.

Maybe she doesn't remember as well? 'Numsang... is it... is it normal, for Psychs to kind of... blank out? Like, to do something and not know it?'

'In the presence of powerful thoughts, it's possible,' she says. 'And of course it's more possible with newbies like you. What happened?'

'Oh... nothing much.' You rub your forehead. Numsang seems honestly not to know, though. She probably saw that you had a fight, and didn't dig deeper. You wouldn't know.

'We're here, by the way!' The car is passed on to a valet. You notice Numsang's skirt is actually pretty short, and she slips into a pair of high, high heels before following you into the building. Turns out it's a hotel.

You don't really feel the elevator as it goes up. Dear god, what the hell did you do? And Laura was being nice to you too... you follow Num numbly to the restaurant, and just then you feel a strong Psych presence in there. Oh great. Just great.

Numsang looks studiedly neutral as you sit down and look at the menu. Dear god, it's all in French. The place has a black, white and red decor, and the waiter asks if you'd like anything to drink.

> What do/say? Beer, cider, wine, whiskey...?
>>
>>19213058
>>19213040
Yeah, it seems like we were taken over by someone else's consciousness, like we were "possessed" more than temporaily insane.
If it did happen at all... I can't really trust my memories now, if that would mean that my memories from a little while ago were wrong...
>>
>>19213100
Just look at Numsang with a pleading look in our eye, silently asking for help with the menu and what we should order, we are so very far out of our element here.

Try to gauge where the strong psych presence is coming from.
>>
>>19213100
>then you feel a strong Psych presence in there. Oh great.
Well, it can't be worse than Numsang, whose presence we can't even feel.
>>
>>19213100
"I'm letting her decide she has great taste." I don't know it seems like a safe answer and it's not like we know the different types of wine. We could also say we just want water.
>>
>>19213100
Tap water. We're a fucking hobo, motherfucker.
>>
> Also, to clarify: Numsang probably doesn't know. Would you like to ask her for help? I mean, she's a Psych, but she's also a woman... it seems a bit iffy to you to admit what appears to be attempted rape to your landlady.

>>19213075

> 65 - 15: Mild failure

You have the increasing sense that something is wrong in that narrative. That it isn't you, and you mean it quite literally. You've had urges before, and you've been under stress before, but three years of surviving as a hobo have taught you that the legs are faster than the hands are strong.

You'd literally run from a squirrel if it challenged you rather than fight it... so if you did it, it must have been like what Numsang said. But where could that thought have come from? How could you not have seen it before it hit you?

Do you want meat, fish, or neither? Sweet or savoury?

Numsang just orders her usual, and a Gopparburg cider. 'That's very good stuff,' she tells you, and frowns when you ask for tap water. 'No one's having tap water. He'll have the Gopparburg as well.'

'Certainly, madame.' The waiter smiles and walks off.

>>19213142
>>19213135

Oh, you could sense Numsang when she was downstairs of your flat, though much more weakly than you had expected. Maybe she's turned on her Obfuscation or something...

The Psych presence is not alone, but with three other people. It's a she, and they're on the other end of the restaurant. You feel like looking, and you look at Numsang. She must know there's another one here.

>>19213184

'Anything the matter? You look troubled.'

'Oh, it's nothing...' you are increasingly convinced it wasn't you. Some powerful external source was interfering. You thought over the events, and remember a moment when you felt a sudden, deep anger.

It's even more incongruous when you consider what Laura did. She didn't say no, and she didn't tell you to go away. She purred 'give me a minute, you,' and then you felt that anger, such that you were convinced she had rejected you. The slap was not there either. But the pushing and pulling definitely was. Oh god, you did do that.

You also remember, at some point, Laura crying in fright, her brain all fogged over. You apologised. She went back into her room. Why was she in the hall, then...?

> You can't remember much more for now; stop rolling for this. What do/say?
>>
I guess just ask for water

Chat with Numsang, get to know her, what she does and why she's so generous with us, and listen to what she has to say if the meeting was set for a specific reason.

Ignore the other psys... it's probably a coincidence and they don't wish our attention.
>>
>>19213368
and why we felt we ere another person. Laura didn't do anything else cause she feels like a screw up or that's what I'm guessing. She doesn't want us to turn into another Marina.
>>
>>19213368
Either that, or another psych was displaying a show of force.
>>
>>19213368
Yeah, there IS a similarity...

>Laura is cut off as Marina attacks her again. This time it is an attack, an aggressive move, as Marina pins her arms and pushes towards her. Laura struggles against it for some moments, and then it's over and Marina pulls away.
>>
Well, let's just get a few stiff drinks and try to enjoy the evening, no need to be rude to our host. When we get back to the penthouse, we'll need to apologize.
>>
>>19213301
Sorry OP that we can't pay attention to the brunch but when attempt rape is involved it's hard NOT to talk about it.
>>
>>19213436

'A sausage and egg souffle, then. And french toast. With compote.'

You had absolutely no idea what that meant. To be honest, you weren't really paying attention... you make up your mind to ignore the psychs, but after a few moments you can't help but ask Numsang.

'Do... do you feel them? Do you know them?'

'It's Octavia,' Numsang says. 'A Fathered Psych. Fra Borgonovo's.' She still seems neutral, and you wonder why when suddenly you feel something tickle the back of your skull - intrusive, yet somehow also pleasurable. Ah, shit, it must be her looking you over. You try to resist...

> Roll d100 for resistance!

Numsang seems quite glad to talk to you. 'No, I didn't call the meeting for a reason. I just wanted to see the newbies. It's one of the ways I have to keep sane. If I did call the meeting for a reason, you'd have 15 minutes' notice.'

'Okay...' well, given her work, that doesn't sound particularly unusual. She works as a senior consultant at Dicebotherhousegloopers, and DBG is as big as consultancies get. 'I just got back from China, actually... the Psych communities there are enormous. Oh, and the work was boring. Work's work...'

You go on talking, and she asks you what you reckon you'd like to do. 'Sure, without a degree it's not easy... but job interviews are a one on one with someone whose brain is open for tweaking. It's not hard to fob yourself off...'

> What do/say?
> Also, sorry if I sounded irritated about the rerolling! I wasn't; it's just that you had two or three shots at remembering, and that 93 roll meant it's about as much as you can remember for now. Don't worry about it, it's perfectly understandable.

> Last one in saves the day! Should I take first 5, or just first 4 next time?
> 92 - 25 vs. 24: great success!

You feel the tickle come again, but this time you're ready for it and reach out, mentally, to grab the manicured hand. It slips from your grasp, and you feel a hard stab into your temples which makes your hands clench involuntarily - not so much pain as surprise. Your body tingles.

Numsang looks up from her Bramble. 'Oi,' she mutters, but you know it's not addressed to you. You swat away another sharp finger, and flash a middle finger of your own. Something tries to land on your finger and bite it, but you swat that away too without trouble.

'Oh well,' the sultry voice rings in your head, 'I wasn't trying that hard anyway. Send regards to your new girlfriend master!'

You rub your ear and look at Numsang. 'No, you're not my boyfriend slave,' she mutters, and this time it's addressed to you.

Meanwhile, about a job... Numsang thinks that over. 'You know, actually, why don't you apply to work at Saffron College? I'm sure you like the thoughts from there, and they've got a bookshop, a canteen, places like that where you could get in touch with people and learn about the school. I mean, if you want to go to Saffron that is. Dawn says you've signed up for exams.'

I'm not sure either so that's why I'm asking
>>
>>19213609
>>19213594

Numsang says background checks here are mostly for people working in high risk areas. Working with the disabled... working with kids... policing, things like that.

'College should be fine. If working with drunkards requires a background check, that'd be the whole city then.'

Just then, the food comes. Oh blimey. It smells fantastic, though the portions look a little small. Numsang digs into her stew and garlic bread with relish, and you taste a bit of - oh god this sausage is fantastic!

>>
>>19213605
Let's inquire about her travels. How does the psych community(ies?) interacts with China's society and political authorities ?
Is the freecomm united globally ? Is there factions based on specific regions of the world, or is there places where it doesn't exist at all ?
>>
>>19213646
>>19213658
>>19213665
>>19213673

You're still unsure you should be taking a job at all now, but hey, if you do, that does sound like a good idea. You tell Numsang just the second bit.

'Yeah, well, it's nice to adjust to society slowly anyway. You're lucky you don't have to pay rent. The rates in the city! It's crazy. I'm actually surprised there aren't more hobos, given how hard it is to find a place to stay here.'

You're about to say something, when you sense the Psych presence move. Numsang glances over, chunk of carrot halfway to her mouth. 'Ah, hell.'

'Numsang Sunprachasit! And a boyfriend who doesn't want to - oh, I didn't know you went for children, Num.'

'Yeah, my appetites are approximating yours with increased contact.' Octavia has pale skin and blue eyes, and dark, wavy hair. She's also wearing a business suit, and radiates an even stronger aura of I AM WORKING OUTTA MY WAY than Numsang. 'This is Dylan.'

'Hello.' She squeezes your hand, and you feel an electric jolt through your forearm, which sets off your funny bone. What's with bestowed Psychs? Is niceness something they just can't do or something? Oww your arm...

> What do/say? They seem not to be talking. The tension is... tense.
>>
>>19212356
>a Creation is, in general, when someone's thoughts become perceptible by other people.
Does that mean that creations are not physical creations ? Just illusions, figments ? And they aren't autonomous from the people that create them ?
How were they dealt with during WWI, or the plague ?
By the way, how were the psych organized in precolombian america, medieval China, or ancient Egypt ? Bestowers sounded like something specifically european... were they similarily organized in other places before european norms got there in important numbers ?
>>
>>19213738

They are not physical in the sense that they are not 'real'. But since humans only have their senses to tell them what's real, being attacked by a Creation can be very real to them indeed. Most Creations only appear to one or two senses - a sharp, alien smell, or a voice in the head, or a strange taste in the mouth. But the stronger ones can stretch across senses and seem like actual beasts or people.

As for organisation, you don't know about history... but Numsang says the Free Comm isn't a global thing, though it's an extensive network. 'In China they get co-opted, some of them. These days the government acknowledges both the fathered and fatherless, and tries to let them hold each other in check. The Free Comm is very much organised by city; we have links with each other occasionally, but in general those are quite loose. The Psychs of the City run themselves, most of the time.'

'Hello, Miss Octavia.' Then you realise she hasn't introduced herself yet. 'Do you come here often? The food here is really nice.'

'The food isn't bad, yeah. I've seen better,' she sounds dismissive, and she says it within earshot of a waiter, who is completely oblivious. 'Mind budging a bit for me to sit?'

You move aside and she sits down, facing Numsang. You sense a ripple of air between them. Oh, come on, not in a posh French joint? But what you fear doesn't happen. Octavia just taps her fingers on the table. 'I'm here to talk about that little matter with your office.'

'What? Oh. Oh that.' Numsang sighs. 'There's very little to talk about, isn't there? And anyway, you have to go to the Vernals to talk. I don't talk. I just count beans.'

'Don't be so self-effacing, dear. Summer is in possession, and Father really does not want to drag it on.'

'We don't either. But we're not giving up because we happen to be in the right. The project was agreed to us.'

'Then is not bloody now, Numsang.'

'Then open a renegotiation. But go to the Vernals.' To you they both seem to be raising their voices, getting ready for a shouting match; but you glance around the restaurant and sense no awareness of the aggression here. They go a bit quiet again. Maybe you should say something...

... oh wait, you're underaged. Whatever, 17, 18...

'You won't like it if we do open the renegotiation, Numsang. And you won't be the only one not to like it.'

'Ah, for heavens' sake, try me,' comes the loud reply. 'You didn't come to the Cote just to give me this shit, did you?'

'Nah, also to meet the novice. He's near our turf, remember?' Octavia turns to you. 'So... what's the story? How'd you drop out of the sky? Also, a Vernal is one of your Spring office people.' Wow, reads you like a book. Octavia's own mind is on top of a hill, covered in thick, thick bramble vines. You're not even going to try clambering up...

like my life was a whole game.

After that i just seemed to discover magic powers

Got sick of sleeping under benches so I figured I'd give this whole psych thing a shot for a while.

It's not bad so far, might stick with it.
>>
>>19214001
I got my powers from the internet! I went on craigslist and someone was just giving them away, and I figured why be a hobo when I can be a Psych?
>>
>>19214001
Well, it's all the Internet's fault. I was exposed to horribly self-referencing material, and when I ended up deciding that I had mind powers, I did have them.

What about you ? How does a Bestower selects and upgrades its "children"?

'Well, I got sick of being a hobo, you know? So I thought, why not get me some mind-screwing powers and fuck people hard up their mental arses, eh?'

... wait, you hadn't meant to say that. But you just did. Octavia titters, touches your forearm.

'Witty. Tell me more.'

You then tell her the truth, and she nods, listening. 'Well, good for you. It's a bit confusing, I'm sure, but it's a pretty quiet awakening. Do you go back to 4chan? What's been going on there with that thread?'

'It's... gone downhill.' Yeah, you haven't gone back to read it ever since the newfags came in with that RAPE THEM ALL shit. You're not about to go back either... 'so, how about you?'

Apparently the Bestowers simply choose their children, and then make them swear Fealty and agree to several contracts for their powers. The Fealty Oath is tied to the fulfillment of all the contracts; as such, the Father may revoke any or all powers at a time. Revocation like that tends to mean death, and an agonising death too.

She's not Jeff's sibling; Numsang winces when you bring him up. 'I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire,' Octavia says, still smiling incongruously. 'But you know, we should keep in touch.'

You wonder how to react, then feel the numbers being burned into your mind. Oh, that stung! Ouch. She appears to live to your southeast, a neighbourhood away.

> Do/say anything before Octavia leaves? And also, before the meal ends? You're almost done, and Numsang's finished her stew already.
>>
>>19214103
>>19214090

Aw, damn, didn't see that. You doubt Octavia would get the reference, though. She radiates poshness like... a very posh... person.
>>

Massage our temples cause getting number and images burn to your head hurts. Leave when Numsang is done I guess
>>
>>19214134
So there's several bestowers in conflict in this city ? Oh right, we did see two of them fighting two days ago. Is she related to that ?
>>
>>19214134
You know Octavia, it's much more traditional to write it down, not that I particularly mind but a bit of warning would have been polite.

The Fealty thing seems like it has some downsides, why'd you go into this line of work?
>>
>>19214134
>Apparently the Bestowers simply choose their children,
What qualities was she chosen for ? Does her power depends on the contents of the contract she entered, or on natural talent that was just switched on ?
>>
>>19214134
We should ask Octavia if there's anything she want from us keeping contact, then ask Numsang the same question (about what Octavia wants).

And >>19214197 once octavia leaves.
>>
>>19214196

Numsang blocks that thought before you voice it. 'She doesn't know. Don't leak it.'

Ooh, that was close.

>>19214197
>>19214224

'It depends on the contracts and our cultivation. We are first given the gift, which you guys got yourselves. Then we are given more gifts, which you guys don't get, and we work to develop all those gifts.'

'But if your gift is gifted, and then gift...' no, no. You try again. 'So is your gift... natural? What do you guys get chosen for?'

'My, my, you're a curious one aren't you? I'll take you to see Father one day and he'll tell you.' She's smiling, and everything suggests it's an invitation - except for the fact that a weight is pressing on your temples, and Numsang is helping you hold it away from crushing your skull. 'Anyway. I'll speak to you some day, Dylan. And I'll try not to speak to you again, Numsang. But I doubt I'd be successful.'

'Worse luck,' she smiles. 'Have a nice Sunday.' Then, after she walks off, 'you asked about their powers, that wasn't advisable.'

'Well, no one told me it wasn't...'

'Yeah, don't worry about it. They won't kill you anyway. Probably. Shall we go? Where'd you like to go next? Or do you want to head back and cuddle with the girl and try again?'

'Um... she's not my girlfriend...'

Numsang grimaces. 'Oh, come on! She doesn't want sex, you had a quarrel, and that's it? Man up a bit! But before that let's go somewhere, if you'd like?'

> What do/say? Numsang is glad to give suggestions, so just give general enquiries.

Creations tend to be interpreted as suggestions or hallucinations or compulsions, so I guess passing out would help.

The effects are indeterminate, it varies between cases; it could be mental problems of any sort, or neurological problems, or just trauma. Or suicide.
>>
>>19214302
Well, she told me she didn't want to be my girlfriend before anything else happened, and it seems like a good thing to me for now.
>>
>>19214302

Where to go is the big question? Maybe we should visit the local museums or something like that.
>>
>>19214302
So what are thosee gifts they don't think we get ? And is it really true no manifested psion gets them ? Any idea why mindfucking is the exception ?
>>
>>19214372
I still want to go meet protesters and rioters. Their energy could be a nice meal, and I'm sympathetic to their thoughts.
>>
>>19214373

'The gifts Bestowers can give can be... quite arcane. Things like controlling Creations, for example. And some pretty deep manipulation, very powerful wiping techniques and using normal humans as puppets for their plans.'

'You mean we can't do that?'

'We can, with enough practice, but for the most part we won't. We treat humans as humans, and they treat them like cattle. That's the major difference.' Numsang shrugs. 'Anyway, they just want to feel superior, and why not indulge the foolish? Anyway, so you'll cuddle later, but whre'd you like to go?'
>>

'I'm not about to bring Timo to see any rioters,' Numsang pats her car. 'As for protestors, we could drive round to the Tavern Fields, see if the tent city's still up... given this weather, though, you're going to be running into some pretty dedicated protestors.'

>>19214442
>>19214372

'We could go to the Port Museum then! It's just a museum about the City's old port, with a very nice harbour and cafe. Lovely place.'

'Port Museum. Confirm destination?'

'Not now, Timo.' She turns to you. 'Or we could go to the National Museum, but it's huge, and it's huge, and it closes in 2 hours.'

> What do? How did it get to 3pm while having brunch? Time moves quickly when you're in a posh place, it appears.
>>
>>19214438
Anger is not the most important emotion in riots. People are unsatisfied, that's why they decide to take part, but once there it's more the excitement and joy of being in a crowd ready to fuck shit up that drives them.
Well, at least in my limited experience.

> Nice roll.

You go around each section of the museum, and can actually feel weak emanations coming not just from the few people around, but also from the artifacts themselves. It's a strange, tingly feeling.

This feeling gets drowned out whenever people are around, since their emanations are much louder, so you wait until rooms are empty before going in to take a look. The buzz is soft, barely audible. Most of the thoughts you hear about are of work - excitement that there's work today, the sense of practiced familiarity seeping from photos. The chains and ropes on display whisper with tension, as people rushed to secure ships alongside with them.

You also sense some darker shadows, of cruelty, suffering and repression. The docks probably aren't a brilliant place to work in. Many of the logs, the crane hooks, the carts - they whisper pain. Some even bear murmurs of untoward deaths, lives cut short at an accident - or with intent...

>>
>>19223447
>>19223413

Your powers do only work on things with brains; while you can feel the buzz of those minds from the objects they have used for a long time, you cannot control those objects directly with your mind.

You could, however, try to discern in more detail those memories. The people whose thoughts have seeped into the wood and metal also had memories and ideas, and those things are stored, tenuously, in the artifacts.

> Roll d100 to try and discern, or go join Numsang.

You briefly consider focusing hard on one of the oars of a boat, but then it looks a little fragile... besides, what might have happened to an oar from which a feeling of regret and pain is emanating? You're not very eager to find out.

'You're pretty quick,' Numsang says as you head down to the cafe. It's got glass panel windows overlooking the river, and the old docklands with their housing. The houses here look similar to those apartments near your place in Saffernsway. 'Did you feel the murmurs?'

'Yeah... yeah, a bit.'

'It's interesting, isn't it? I come here sometimes just to feel that.' She sips her hot chocolate. It looks pretty nice. There's a shop over to one side, and hot food and drinks are sold at the bar. The place itself is quite quiet, given it's almost weekend closing time now. 'This city closes too damn early,' Numsang sighs.

'Hmm? What's there to do on Sunday...' she thinks about it. 'Well. There's bits of the city which are always open. Mostly in the centre, where it's really touristy... so I go and shop, I guess. Or watch a movie. Or go to the casino and the big malls, just to soak up the atmosphere.'

'I see...'

'It's boring, I know,' she twiddles her fingers. 'I haven't really got the time for anything outside of work, though. I've been meaning to get back into volleyball, somehow, but I'm just so busy, and besides I'm rather out of shape...'

She says that, but it's patently untrue. Then Numsang looks at you. 'You seem bored. What're you thinking about? Have you actually met many Psychs so far? And I mean the nice psychs, not Octavia's type.'

> What do/say?

> Does it? Hmm. Maybe I'll go back and check then.

'So you know more psychs than real people? What about your old friends? Or... I expect it's tough to live when you're homeless, isn't it...'

You think that over. Yeah, that's true. You know of people who drank too much, walked in front of a train. Overdoses. Freezing to death. Worst of all, murders and beatings. You don't have many friends, come think of it, who are still alive now, or whose whereabouts are known to you...

'You're worrying about something,' Numsang says. 'What's it? Social life? Laura? I'm telling you one thing, both as a psych and someone much older than you - you have to start making friends now, kiddo, the ones you make now are the best ones. Work friends don't really count.'

> What do/say?

Also, wait a minute, where'd Numsang get those slices of French toast from? They smell awesome, and she's spreading jam on them. 'You want some?'

Mmm, eggy buttery French toast. You enjoy the one you have as slowly as you can, which means in one and a half mouthfuls.

'Nah, we can't have a block full of Psychs. We'd probably drive everyone in the neighbourhood crazy, or worse. That's the problem. We are a little like tigers, you know? Because we prey on people, we can't really gather in overly large groups.'

'Still, well, the congregations do hold periodic meetings, and each season the relevant congregation traditionally throws a big series of events. So that's us, these three months.' She doesn't sound very excited by the notion. 'We're actually throwing a small function at the Compton House Chambers next Saturday; if you want to come, you're welcome. Say Numsang invited you, you lucky bastard.'

'So what's the society like?'

'Well. Each congregation mostly runs itself. We don't really have a hierarchy of ranks, but there's a hierarchy of prestige - since we don't have official positions, it becomes more a matter of what you've done, and what interesting acts you've committed. The more active you are in work, the more well known you get.'

'There's got to be leaders though, aren't there?'

'Yeah. We have councils, and normally half the members are randomly chosen while the other half are elected. There's plenty of fighting over those seats, especially in Summer.' She sips the chocolate again.

'Do you...'

'I sat two years ago as a random choice. As for election...' she doesn't say more.

> More incoming.
>>
>>19223488
>Also, crossdressing - it's really up to you. Kevin will arrange for the uniform. Looks like you probably will do it...

Hell no! Just get a janitor uniform.
God damn
>>
'It's often good to mix with normal people, though,' Numsang says. 'You can't discuss your skills or identity with them... but then you can't eat Psychs. See, the thing is, the other congregations talk about skills and organisation and everything, and they always forget - we live in a world of people.' She says it in a hushed tone, like revealing some profound truth. 'We live in a world of people. Their thoughts feed us. They build and fill this city. Their moods shift our moods. That's what Summer's about. Well, anyway, if you're interested, we do have events for normal people too. Sometimes we get them mixed in, to make an event more... interesting.'

'I see... how about new Psychs, where do I meet those? I mean, you're great, and Dawn's really nice, but you're more like... my case workers, you know?'

'We *are* your case workers. We haul ass to make sure the new ones settle in properly. The first few months are the most dangerous ones, and if it goes wrong you go around popping craniums. Like that other one just the other day. Have you heard; he's killed another two people. Now there's a proper police manhunt. But anyway, doesn't Dawn have a few other Psychs under her wing? There's that Jeremy bloke...'

'Jerome.'

'Jerome, whatever, he's just some lazy douchebag. That Sam girl, though, she's curious. We're interested in her. She'd be great for Summer.'

Numsang looks deep in thought, and rather satisfied, at that.

> What do/say? I'm heading back first, so I'll either reply in 20 minutes, or you'll see me curse and swear on Twitter.
>>
>>19224145
There's downsides to the two options. As a janitor, we cant really talk to the girls, as a girl, we can't move around the school too easily.
But when we'll go there for their festival, the downside of dressing as a schoolgirl disappears, and I think janitors won't be expected to be around the girls at all.
So schoolgirl uniform it is at least for that time.

But anyway, I think we can bring both disguises, in a garbage bag as a janitor or in a schoolbag as a student, and swap them as needed.

That can be done. When you eat a psych, he becomes a voice in your head and increases your power. Maybe we can become powerful and populated enough to build our own mental world.

>We will have to pass tests as a janitor too. Because I'm pretty sure that school don't actually employ 17-years-old boys as janitors.

Seriously, though, you ask Numsang about that, and she nods. 'Well, a lot of norms who are highly creative have such things. They get sunk into their own little worlds, and while that means they are very hard to break, it can also make it harder for them to connect with the real world. Cloudcuckoolanders, you know?

'You could try it yourself, though - who knows, you might even be successful. But such things are hard to control, and might end up affecting how you are in real life. You're asking a Summer, so that's what I'd say about it...'

> Try this?

>>19224815

Numsang thinks about this. 'I don't know if it can be done. We don't know, for obvious reasons, if we retain anything after Morus. And to be honest I don't think any of us wants to find out...'

Just then, the museum starts to close, and soon the two of you are walking out into the rain, headed for the car. 'You headed back home then?'

> A trip that rolls 2, and then a 98. I don't even know. Would you like this to balance out, or go hilariously one way or another?

You start thinking of the Kingdom of Dylania as you get into the car, and by the time you cross the bridge again you aren't really paying attention to anything outside anymore. You feel Numsang's presence next to you, much more powerful than yours.

The Kingdom should be a medieval one, maybe. Or maybe a modern one, just like now? You wonder how crazy you should make it. Just then, you feel a great tree in the middle of a courtyard, around which is a white stone wall. What a glorious garden!

Then you approach the tree and a branch slams into your chest out of nowhere. You reel, then realise you are pressed against the side of the car, and Numsang's hand had just nudged you a little. 'Woah, dude. You getting all absorbed?'

'Huh? Oh! Oh no. I mean, oh yes. Sorry.'

'You seem like the kind who gets absorbed, yes...' she narrows her eyes a little. 'Well, be careful of your inclinations. You draw on people's thoughts to create your mental defences, but the shape of your mind feeds back into the people around you unconsciously too. If you turn my flat into a LARP great hall or something, I...' she pauses. 'Actually, I wouldn't mind if I were doing it myself. But you're my tenant, so don't mess with my flat!'

'Okay, okay!' You can't help but laugh at how ridiculous that sounds, even as you become aware of how powerful you now are. Of course normal people can read moods and react, but now you eat their moods, and in turn your thoughts give theirs shape. You are muse and dependent, dream and nightmare at the same time, it seems...
>>
>>19225137
Go hilariously towards the 98!
>>
Thinking about that, you go upstairs, sensing the thoughts around. It occurs to you that, despite having lived here a few days, you don't really probe the people around in this building, much less the surrounding neighbourhood.

You wonder if other Psychs do this? Numsang said she did, sometimes - but it's a Summer thing, she says, being a busybody. 'Sometimes they have problems, you know, and it's nice to help out. Well, would be nice to help out if I weren't so busy. And sometimes, by digging around, you can figure out some really fucked up people, people to watch.

Hmmm... wait, fucked up people to watch? You didn't catch that. Why are you watching out for fucked up people...? Also, speaking of fucking up, here you are, Dylan, you're home.

Did she... did she get a fire- oh god, fuck, no, not fire. Please don't let it be fire.

You look down at the gap between door and floor, and see neither flickering nor smoke coming out. There's no fire extinguisher around either.

Opening the door, your heart misses several beats as you sense Laura sitting, in the kitchen, where there is indeed smoke. There's no fire, though. Oh god, the rice pot!

'LAURA!' You slam the door closed and run in. She's sitting as if entranced, staring at a pot from which black smoke is issuing. You grab the handle and yelp - even the plastic is hot now! But eventually you pull the pot away and put it under the tap until it stops steaming. Bits of instant noodles float up to the surface.

Laura is soaked all over with sweat from the stove's heat, but she continues to sit there as sweat runs in droplets down her face. After a long while, she turns her cute, long-lashed eyes at you. 'Dylan? Heyyyy...'

'Laura, what the hell happened?'

'I... did you get with anyone today?' She flashes you a shit-eating grin, and wipes the sweat off her face.

You quickly open the nearest window, in the dining room which you don't really use, and then turn on the hood and everything. Why was Laura even trying to cook noodles in a rice pot? On top of the fucking stove?

'What... no, I wasn't... I just went for brunch with my landlady.'

'Is she cute?' Laura giggles, then the giggle turns into fits of laughter, until she stumbles and falls off the chair. You move to help her, but as you touch her you suddenly feel something surge into you.

Marina asked to talk to you. She says she'll be headed somewhere for a long time and she might not ever come back. Would be nice to do a bit of catching up. In that mind, the few friends. A syringe - several syringes. Rolled joints. Green pills.

Someone is thrashing around on the floor like a dying fish before shuddering and going
still. Laura screams - or it's her voice, but she's not there. You don't know what's happening. Marina says she's going away.

On a hunch, you think you should perhaps go check her cellphone or something. You also consider apologising - but now, partly from that contact with Laura, you seem very sure you didn't hit her. You recall slapping her with all your strength on her left chin.

You raise her left chin - nothing. No bruise. She's still giggling. Then she mutters, 'Dylan...' and lifts her head to kiss you. What... you don't even know...

> What do/say? Remember - as a Psych, you may remember other people's things, live other people's lives. In return, your mental activity is no longer yours alone; others will be affected by your thoughts, often deeply.

Those images must be from somewhere else. Laura goes for the rave parties - maybe it's one of those? And Marina...

You try to get away, but Laura is insistent, and soon you are against the table leg, with her kissing and nuzzling and licking. 'Laura... Laura, don't...'

You push her gently away. She looks at you. Oh god, this is what she did to you last night - or so it might be, except maybe it wasn't... but there is no anger in her eyes. She simply nods. 'Okay.'

'Is there something you'd like to tell me, Laura?'

'I...' She shakes her head, and you see fluff falling out of her ears on the floor before dissolving. 'I... got a message from Marina. She's going for a trip somewhere with those friends of hers. She'll be coming back just before the summer fair. I don't know why she even sent that message. She says it'd be nice to meet up tomorrow for lunch, at school. But... but I don't know.'

You sense that Laura's mind now is like a village whose walls have mostly collapsed. Her thoughts are jumbled, and it takes effort not to prey on them, to worsen her incoherence. 'Those friends... there's something weird about them. I went to a rave, right, and once Marina came in with a huge bag of weed, and some other stuff too. Says it's gifts. They're not fucking her up, are they? Oh god, what...'

Leaving her alone for a bit, you go and check the cellphone. Yeah, it's as she says. Marina sounds... cheerful, somehow. The message is full of textspeak.

God dammit, I lol'd.
But we haven't yet build Dylan Kingdom yet.

I'd say we'd better fuck, take her mind off it for a little while, and talk more once we're relaxed.

Then we should offer to go with her to her meeting with Marina.
Maybe we could get the two of us invited on the trip...

You go back to Laura and hoist her to her feet. She feels light, and her whole body is now clammy from the sweat. Tears are streaming down her eyes, but she nods when you ask if she's okay.

'I'm... fine. Thanks. I'm just... oh god, my thoughts feel like they're in such a mess. Why am I even worrying about Marina? I mean, my grades... and my club... and my life!' She sighs in frustration. 'But then I can't just... look, if something bad happens to her, it would be because of me.'

'Would it, though? It's her choice to react the way she did.' You put a hand on her shoulder. 'Of course, we ought to try and get her not to get hurt or anything, but... it's not always up to us, you know? We can't save the world.'

'That's true... that's true.' She then flashes you a genuine, lovely smile, even while sobbing and wiping her tears. 'I don't even know why I got so worked up, actually. it's weird. I just... these few days I've been getting so worked up about everything. It might be that flashback to the bombing. Oh man, I'm such a mess. I'm sorry, Dylan.'

Fuck, you should be the one who's sorry, Dylan. Laura looks at you. 'So... want to tell me about that scalded hand of yours?'

You realise you've placed the bad hand on her lap unconsciously. She doesn't seem to mind, though. Ah, teenage.

'Eh? How'd you- why do you say that?' But you've already given yourself away a little.

'Woman's intuition! Also, there isn't anywhere in the mall with waiters.' Oh, damn, rumbled. 'Got distracted looking at hotties?'

You think about Lynn. Well, hot is a word one could use. But now that you're a Psych, utterlyconfusinglyscary is another word you could use for her. You know, maybe Mayne Parish could be where you start getting to know more normal people. Hang out with them, maybe, feed on them...

'And what did I do?'

'You got a little angry. Asked me why I teased you and then shut the door on you...' she scratches her head. 'I'm sorry, Dylan, I...'

'No, don't say that. I mean. If you didn't want it... you didn't want it, right? But what... so did I do something else?'

'Hmm? Not really. We yelled at each other a little. Then you went off to sleep... then I woke up, and wanted to go to you. I even... took everything off. But I couldn't, once again. The same... wall. So I sat in the couch and fell asleep.'

You do manage to feel out some of the people who seem happier, or at least more content.

>>

Tell her that we don't understand why we got angry. We enjoy her company, and when she doesn't want to do everything we want, we still enjoy it - after all, we can still take matters into our own hand... We don't usually get moody. That was one of our bad moments, and we're to blame for it.

By the way, what's the point of creating a world in our head, besides proving that we're able to do so ?

It sounds like it'll monopolize a huge part of our intellectual capacities, even if I misunderstood and it's not a continuous task.
>>
>>19226318
It's the best mind defense possible. It's high risk, high reward though, if I understand it correctly. It won't monopolize our mental process, but rather, all of our mental process will be fed through that filter. All of our thoughts will be carried out in this little world we create in our mind.

Laura wonders why you asked, and her eyes widen when you answer. 'Oh... oh no, you didn't hit me or anything! I would've run away if you'd done that.'

'I'm sorry for being angry. I don't know what came over myself too.' There's a moment of tension, then you put your arm around her and pull her into a hug. She's still clammy and needs a shower. But she doesn't smell half as bad as you thought she might. You like this smell. You could soak in it all day... you push the obsessive thoughts out of your mind.

'Um, Laura, I'm just wondering, right... now that Chuck is out of the picture and you're safe...'

'Hmm?'

'Maybe you could move back to your apartment?'

She looks at you, surprise in her eyes. 'Was it the landlady who told you this?'

'No, no... well, a bit. She did say less than a week.'

Laura sighs, her breath tickling your neck. 'Yeah... well, I guess you're right.' Then she pulls away. 'I'll go tomorrow morning, then? Just pack everything, I'll go to school, and then go back to my apartment?'

'That'd be nice, if it's not too much stuff...'

'It's just my underwear and PE clothes.' She laughs as you blush, then leans close to you. You feel something in her mind, blooming into arousal. Dear god. Is Laura normally like this? Did you do this to her? It feels uncomfortable to think about it. But she leans in to your ear and whispers 'sushi tonight?'

That doesn't sound like a high reward. We have no need for the ultimate defense, when we don't even plan to enter into conflict with other psychs.

It would only be interesting if we could run simulations of parts of the real world. Maybe we could develop the ability to copy someone's psyche, and implant it in an imagined situation, to see how the person would react to it.
I doubt it's within our power, though.

You shrug, and then kiss her. She seems willing. And she tastes savoury.

'Meh... pizza, really?' But she acquiesces, and soon you're again looking at stuff on the computer, ordering. A large pizza and two sides later, Laura takes the mouse and opens up Rooble Maps, and shows you to a nice-looking, three storey brick house. It's one of those all around the neighbourhood.

'Eh? What?'

Laura taps the screen where the address is. 'My apartment. You can come visit. Can I come visit? I won't until you get a Gii or something, but may I?'

The pizza comes strangely quickly, and this time you pay $20, treating Laura to a meal. She immediately kicks up her heels on the coffee table and nibbles on a BBQ chicken wing. 'Go on then!'

> What do/say? Also, you realise something - it seems that when you're talking to Laura at the same time as you feed on her, she does not seem quite so affected - at least when you are around. It's probably right after the feeding, or when she's alone after a period of feeding, that things go wonky.

Laura laughs. 'You have two desktops! We can play games too.'

You go on eating, occasionally feeding each other. Laura puts a tomato in her mouth, and you eat it off her. 'I don't know why, but I just think you're such a nice person, Dylan,' she says, sidling up.

> What do/say? It's 9 in the evening now. Your fingers are greasy, and Laura is undoubtedly horny.

You sense her arousal being displaced by frustration, and hug her to try and make her less frustrated. 'You know, now that I think of it, I shouldn't go talk to her at all.'

Hmmm. That actually makes sense. You wouldn't talk to someone who just locked you in a totally dark toilet, would you? But then that would miss you the chance to make Marina's acquaintance and try to gauge her... hmm.

You wonder how far you can use Laura. To your credit you're not trying to use her to know Lynn, but with this case...

After finishing the pizza and the BBQ wings, it occurs to you that after that first encounter you've been taking turns to not have sex with each other. And that first time you didn't even really feel much of anything, what with being distracted by Laura's memories...

... oh well. She's leaning against your back as you wash your hands. 'Shall we go out for a night walk along the lake? It's not very cold, so it'd be nice wouldn't it?'

'That sounds good,' she agrees. Within minutes, neither of you having changed, you are on the banks of the lake, feeling the cool breeze around the waters. The whole walk is well paved, and very well lit, and Laura leans into you as you walk slowly in the direction of Saffron.

'Man, Saffron's still lit up,' she points out. 'And the watersports centre too.'

'Oh, that's a watersports centre? Didn't know that...' but even as you say it, you can see people walking out of the centre and headed for the canoes. Wait a minute. They're just within range, and you sense a certain furtiveness that doesn't make sense if they're just canoeing.

'Yeah. We used to come here for sailing and canoeing lessons in school. Man, the last year sucks. Studying, studying...' Laura kisses you on the cheek as you are distracted, and starts telling the story of when some of her friends once tried to scull a large team boat. 'They nearly ran aground! Man, Miss Mattison was furious!'

Meanwhile, you're quite certain - those guys shouldn't be there. That's the only reason why they're so nervous. You sense some people walking along the footpath, with Resno shopping bags, and also some joggers; but it's them holding your attention.

You watch on as they push the canoes into the water, and then there's a yelp and whooping and some laughter. The picture from them is a little blurry, a little yellowed...

>>19227303

In fact, it's so blurry and so yellowed you can hardly make out anything. You do notice the watersports centre itself is actually turned off; it's the gym and cafe upstairs that's lit up.

Man, seriously... meanwhile Laura is still talking about her schoolmates. Some of them even sound quite cool, actually. You like how you can see them in your mind while she talks about them, see the memory as it passes. You try your best not to feed on those.

'Hmm. Man, I should make more friends. I mean... I know those girls, they hardly know me... maybe I should join a club or something, eh?'

'Hmm, but I thought you were in the music club?'

'Yeah... but I'm not really doing much music in there. It's cool, though. We're holding some rehearsals soon, you could come along actually.' She tells you it's at a small music hall nearby, in Mexton.

You nod, and then push your way through the yellow mist - which turns out to be alcohol - and into all four of their minds simultaneously. The sensation makes you stagger a little, and Laura gasps. 'Y'all right?'

'Ah, yeah, just a little bit...'

Why the hell is Carl the captain? I mean, look at him! Arrogant, miserable prick!

'Yeah. I'm just a little tired, I guess... shall we sit down?' Come think of it, Laura's foot cut seems to be healing well if she's not complaining about it.

They're canoeists. They're canoeists from Saffron, and they're not supposed to be in the water. They're really drunk, and in that drunkenness you sense an anger, the beginning of some sort of plan. They're not wearing lifejackets.

And then it happens, again. As you push too deeply, asking too many mental questions too quickly - what are you planning? What's going on? Who's Carl? - you provoke a reaction, and it's a reaction of rage.

Soon there is yelling coming from the water's surface, and you sit up as joggers begin to take notice too. 'Aww, come on, you fucking lazy cunt, you never even turn up for practice!'

'I swear, Carl, if you give me this shit ONE MORE FUCKING TIME-'

'What's going on, eh?' A jogger gestures at them and glances at you. Laura looks worried...

> What do/say? Shit, the consequences of rage in a canoe on the water could be pretty serious.

'Man, I have no idea... but it sounds bad,' you say. The jogger nods, jogging towards the two of you.

'It sounds like they're going to fight.'

'Yeah... man, if something happens- Laura, maybe we should call the cops just in case.' As you say that, and Laura fumbles for her cellphone, you reach out to calm them down.

... to your surprise, it actually works! You hear Laura's voice telling the responder about the situation, but even now the situation's already changing. You tweak their minds, pulling their legs - they're the laddish sort - and soon the aggression is turned, as it tends to be in teams, into mirth.

'Man, they sound really drunk,' the jogger says, as the cackling laughter comes over the lake. They're about a hundred metres out now, calling out each other's names and slinging good natured profanities. Then it happens. Someone goes 'WOOOOO!'

'Dude, sit down, you're-'

'Oh, fuck,' you and the jogger say at once, as one of the boat tips its passengers into the lake. Laura freezes.

Stupid drunk kids, how cold is the lake this time of year?

Laura, stay calm, you know a lot more about boating than I do. What should we do about this?

Swimming 100 meters out and back seems iffy, if we can we'll want to use a boat to get him as I don't trust the drunk kids to pull him out effectively. Get Laura's more experienced boating opinion and enlist the Jogger.
>>
>>19227727
I do not think it is a good idea to swim after them.
>>
>>19227727
Are we a good swimmer ?
If not, run to a canoe and try to row up to them quick enough to help. Maybe the jogger can help.

I don't see anything else to do.
We could try to sober up the other guys on the canoe so that they can react appropriately. But that's risky.

So far you only hear the people on the other boat going 'Oh fuck, ohhh fuck!' as they realise they've seriously messed up.

As for the water, it isn't that cold. It's summer, so that's nice. You're comfortable in water, kind of; it's a good hobo way of getting a free bath, anyway.

You tell Laura to calm down, but she gets a better idea - she gets on the bench and starts shrieking and yelling for help. Sure enough, people start jogging over, and she points out into the water for them.

As for the jogger, all he says is 'ah, bloody hell,' and then he takes out his cellphone and other gadgets and puts them on the bench.

> Jump in yourself, or do something else? The jogger seems ready to jump in; others are arriving, and two of them are running over to the watersports centre now.

'Dylan! No!' Laura yells after you as you rush for the float. Then you remember - oh yeah, your cellphone! You put it on the ground, and then take off your shirt and jump in with the float.

Bloody hell the water is- oh, actually, it's not that cold. You know the bathing pools over at the Downs are about 80 metres from one side to another, so it's not very hard for you - with the float to help as well. The jogger, who's ahead of you, grabs one of the thrashing guys.

'Fuck! Ow! Stop thrashing you damn fool!' The jogger must have gotten clubbed round the head, but he uses the float as a restraining tool. Fortunately, the guy you chose to go for is a little clearer in the head. Well, with your help he is, at least.

'Oh god! Ohhh god!' he repeats as you feed off his thoughts, siphoning off the panic even though you don't like the hardness, the harsh taste of fear. Bleagh. You slip the float around his shoulders. 'Oh god, help me!'

'I'm helping you, you idiot,' you mutter, and drag him back to shore. By then the police are here, and the ambulance, and about twenty or thirty people gathering to watch Saffron canoeists make an absolute arse of themselves.

'Dylan! You all right? Oh god your hand!' Laura grabs it. OW OW OW. Well, thanks for waking it up Laura!

You let the medics come in and tend to the guys, and then look for the jogger. He's already about to slip off into the night. 'Clothes are all wet,' he says, laughing. 'Well, good work I guess.'

He takes back his cellphone and gadgets from Laura, who then fusses over your hand. It's stinging and itches like crazy, but you know that touching it would be a whole world of hurt, so grrrrrgh.

'Let's go back,' you say, and Laura nods, draping your t-shirt around you. The crowd parts to let you pass, closing around those guys. You can sense people whose emanations you've fed on before, people from around the neighbourhood. Their attention is now on the students, and the policemen.

Back home Laura looks at your hand, and then shakes her head. 'Figure we'll need to shower.'

You know exactly what she means, but...

> What do/say?

You don't think it'd be right to resist - besides, you do need a shower - and so you follow her into her shower stall. She undresses you, then gets you to undress her.

'Man, you're seriously shy,' she says as you hesitate with just about everything. 'As some of my friends would say, you need to get a life!'

She has no idea, man. But still, as you do your best to draw energy from other sources and let Laura recover, she appears to be at ease. She tells you about a few movies you could watch, mostly movies about superheroes, or some rom-coms. Some movies about failing sports teams becoming not-failing sports teams, things like that.

'Drawing would be nice,' she murmurs as she scrubs your chest. 'You should meet Lynn, actually. You guys might get along. But then she's a bit weird. But then you're a bit weird too, aren't you?'

'Am I?' She doesn't resist as you rub her shoulders, and then move elsewhere.

'Mm hmm. What sort of social... thing are you looking for anyway? Sports... clubs... societies... what?' She sounds like a school councillor talking about school clubs, but she has a point. You'd be better off knowing roughly what you want, and then going to the right activity...

'Well... mainly art... and music, a bit, I suppose. And then maybe something to keep fit. I don't really like team sports, though.' You reckon, given what you are now, the rest of the team probably wouldn't like you in the team either. You'd either be an inspirational player, or blow the opponents' brains - but that's not really an admissible tactic...

'Man, you're a tough one,' Laura giggles. 'Maybe... badminton, then? Tennis? Oh, oh, archery! Or air rifle! Man, those bows look really cool. And then... yeah, you might want to join a book club maybe? MP's full of those silly societies for cooking and knitting and there's even one for drinking beer. When all of us are underage.'

'What, what's the admin do about it?'

'Oh, it's a secret club, of course!' Laura tells you a few more small anecdotes, maybe suggests track and field as well, then you end up talking about meeting girls. 'You just want to sleep with everyone, don't you?'

'That's not it,' you protest. Yeah, with your hands all over her, Dylan. How valid an argument.

'Nothing wrong with admitting it, you know,' she leans against you, pushing you back. 'I'm not jealous. I'm not your girlfriend.'

You're not sure if you should feel sad when you know she means that, sincerely.
>>

Your talking gets more murmurlike, with more breaks for kissing. You remember discussing something about wushu, or maybe karate. 'They say judo has got, like... ground exercises... which are the funniest thing. You have to grapple each other and twist around on the floor mat and hold each other down.'

'Like fighting sex?'

'Mm hmm. You said sex.' She giggles.

> 92: success!

This time you swear you will try your best to remember everything as it was, just to convince yourself that you aren't mad and you aren't driving Laura mad.

And this time, finally, you succeed. You throw each other all around the bathroom stall, then the bathroom. At some point you back Laura against the door, and the two of you tumble out, shouting and laughing. You remember asking if it's the bed or the floor, and a moment when you test out the parquet floor.

'Hmm. Nahh.'

'Yeah, let's not be lazy...'

You remember everything else, too. Which is a damned good thing.

When you wake up the next morning, it's already half past seven, and Laura is gone. You feel the sudden stab of fatigue in your mind as you fall back, trying to grasp at other minds.

You're alone again.

Saffron it is, then?

You're a little bit sick of going to the mall now, for all the chain places. So you end up spending $5 on a quiche and coffee set in a small cafe, run by a huge Swedish guy who is surprisingly gentle with the spatulas.

It's not bad, really, it isn't. You've gone east of your place; this particular high street is rather quiet, and you can tell the place is posh. Many families have someone staying in, and their thoughts revolve around leisure, sports, art, music...

Hmm, hmm.

> $162 in hand ($20 for pizza, $5 for quiche)

After breakfast, you walk up the lake path to see students from one of the secondary schools on a morning run, led by a wiry, military-looking fellow. The kids are a jumble of thoughts, from resentment to excitement. You walk on, past the watersports centre, up to Saffron.

... it's still very quiet. It's only 8 in the morning; turns out classes start only at 9. Huh. Well, there's a cafeteria and apparently some canteens around the campus...

You head for the cafeteria. Yeah... it's pretty quiet. Some students are sitting here and there, staring intensely at their laptops - though their minds are not on study, but on social networks and incoming parties.

A quick scan tells you that there's going to be at least three house parties tonight, and that's just from these few guys. Who holds a party on *Monday* night?

You sit down and scan around for people whose minds seem to be a bit leaky, and then you catch two guys talking to some guy who appears to have broken up and gotten bad grades all together. You attempt to get the mates' thoughts and shore the victim's mind up, but you can't seem to get anything to fit. The person just seems to get more depressed and fatigued, until eventually he tells the other two to go away and falls asleep.

'Dude...'

'No, just go away, let me rest...'

You wince as the two walk off, a bit miffed. Well, it could be worse.

Laura texts back, 'what?! I'm not going to ask that! Also, don't be so horny - didn't you have enough last night? ;)'

Kevin agrees with your assessment. 'We are also keeping an eye on the students from other schools. If there's any noteworthy information, we'll tell you. Numsang says you're interested in joining Summer, meanwhile. Is that so?'

We do. A 17-years-old janitor roaming around will raise suspiscion. We'll have to use our powers everytime we meet someone, regardless of the disguise.

I think in this particular school being a manly looking girl is likely to get more attention than being a young looking janitor and so comparitively we would only need a passive use of our powers to make our appearance fit (just fake a beard or something) plus making ourselves appear older is a far less dramatic change.
and btw I don't think dressing like a girl is degrading, just a bad idea in this situation

But you have great digs, and at least you managed to make one friend. Now you only hope her brain isn't too messed up by sticking around wth you for days...

>I think in this particular school being a manly looking girl is likely to get more attention than being a young looking janitor
Frankly, I don't agree. Janitors are always a rare sight, to which you pay a little attention, especially male ones in a girls' school. New faces may be more easily recognized as such too, since they're not a big number. Schoolgirls are everywhere, no one will pay attention to an ugly one... except at times and places where there aren't supposed to be of course.

How about we use that first roll as training reflexes and the second roll as training speed. I think those two would be the most useful together.
