In that case, I suppose I can drum up a battle plan. You tankers--Alfie, Blitz, Hailmarrow--you're gonna need to be the tip of our spear. Alfie, get tanks back in working order--we're gonna need that firepower. Priority targets for you guys are the AAA tanks and artillery positions--keep pushing the center. Sergeant, you seem to know what you're doing so keep pushing the East--we'll see what we can do about those reinforcements. Burndheist, use your rockets to take out those Eagle Archers--they keep plugging away and our speartip won't last. Get Otso his Axemen and we get get a foothold in the city.

As for infantry, we have our own priorities. Funkel, see what you can do about getting some shrooms out and about--I don't care what they do, just make 'em hurt the enemy, and if you're too far away to do that, grow us some of those BaconShrooms and help keep our boys in fighting condition. Caster Espresso, get some earthbending done--it looks like we might need some fortifications; alternatively, we could use some more airbending to clear out this desert sand and possibly redirect some of these arrows and shells heading toward us. Everyone else, keep hitting these guys, and hit 'em hard. I'll Ghoulify any enemy infantry you guys kill so we can bolster our force. The Major is tasked on call-ins and fire support.

was an uncertain day for the Terrible Children, for the first time in our 5 years of action, we've clashed with a formidable enemy not of the heavenly bodies or even of the royal elite but with an Earthly peasant commander who's name we can only gather from hearsay.

With our officers barely escaping death and facing defeat to a peasant rabble, our jobs as war heroes will no doubt see pause.

And indeed, we would see this year end without setting foot in the warzone....

The Voss Royal Guard was simply a decorative unit for Palace guarding and showing the colors of Voss to those who dare threaten the Crown. It is obvious that we've come a long way from that, and have for better or for worse, embroiled ourselves in a war as old as our Emperor in waiting.

To have realized that we would meet our match with a worldly enemy is simply a sobering truth that we would have to accept and move on. This was no heroic sacrifice, nor did the deaths accomplish anything on our ends. It was simply the same senseless killing that we give out, doled out to us by an enemy that was vastly more prepared than we were.

Alfya has made her forces fleet, just as predicted. She improved not only her situation, but has also created an opportunity for the Heaven and Earth forces for Kashir, and the Prince's political enemies. The concept of a peasant commander taking down a royal tyrant has a romantic ring to it does it not ?

But I digress, our hero's journey will find rest for now, and we'll do whatever is necessary to recreate the Royal Guard into a worthy throne for Vilkas to rule from.

Meanwhile, Thane who has been fighting the ground wars longer than we have will answer our call. Countess Hel , Gustav, and even that old fart Irons will join in the secret picnic. He may answer to his failings in front of Vilkas then. Officers, you will be needed- bring only 4 representatives at the very most. Everyone else may join informally and enjoy the Autumn breezes I suppose.

Meanwhile, arrange amongst yourselves what we will need for this war going forward.

The sandbag took the heavy strikes dutifully, idly swinging and bandanged hands struck its front and sides. Ella telegraphed her hits in one-two groups, moving back and forth with the motion of the bag. She grunted as her fist connected with the side of the bag, following the strike with a flurry of quick jabs. She gave out a little bark as she sank a right hook, feinted left, and struck the bag with two quick jabs. She continued the routine for some time, steadying the bag whenever it started to swing too wildly.

The door to the rec room opened slightly, a lanky figure stepping in. Tall, male. Black, polished shoes with black pants and a black coat. White gloves and a mask that looked like some bird's beak with blackened glass at the eye sockets. A top hat with the brim pulled low, casting a shadow over the face. Worn leather holster with the leather grip of a shovel sticking out from the back. He moved like a wraith, his footsteps making scant a sound as he moved across the floor of the rec room, arriving at the side of the lieutenant without drawing eye nor ear of attention.

He observed her, there. The way her breath began hoarse as she continued to land blows. The way her eyes blazed with fire as she ducked, feinted, around the sandbag. The way her feet danced on the wooden floor. Her muscles tensed, relaxed. Her chest expanded and collapsed. An errant lock of hair flittered about in front of her face. The sweat dripped and beaded off her body. Form and function.

He paused for a moment, remembering why he had come. It had been quite some time after the Lieutenant had let him and that vulcan bodyguard of her's—what was her name?—to go, as she had put it, “blow off some steam”; he had come to make sure she was still in fighting shape. 'Not that they had done much fighting,' he reminded himself. But, the past was the past; no use in dwelling over things for too long.

Ella laid two final blows into the sandbag, sending the bag spinning in a wide circle. She tossed her head back, brushing the sweat off of her brow. Her thoughts were running wild. The mission, the Major, her failure as a CO, the big black scary man in the white mask right by her ohwaitwhatthehellisthatthing—

Ella screamed in surprise at the form that had materialized to the side of her, instinctively shifting into a fighting stance and tossing a quick jab toward the man's bird-like mask. The man dodged the fist in time, quickly regaining his composure. “I am sorry if I disturbed you,” came the somewhat distorted reply. “Was I interrupting something?”

“Wha—?” Ella tilted her head before looking the man up and down. “Oh, the Corpsier.” She sighed. “Goddess, I was about to lay into you.”

“Nonsense—if you had decided to continue that little flurry of blows, I could have easily dodged you.” The Corpsier produced a white towel from behind his back. Ella took the towel gratefully, padding it around her face. “You telegraph your punches too obviously. And you always come out of your combos the same way. I could have incapacitated you with my shovel in five seconds flat.”

Ella blinked. “You...know about boxing?”

“I have watched a few matches, yes. Hank Ashbury versus Dean Malloy, Scott Graham versus Firehouse Floyd, Gunboat Smith versus Dean 'Tadpole' Williams—smashing bout, that last one. Tadpole got KO'd in the fifth round because he was doing what you were doing—he never saw that right hook when he was coming out of his one-two combo.” Ella led the two of them to a vacant bench. Her gym bag was set off to the side. Ella had decided to sit down, draping the towel about her shoulders. The Corpsier chose to continue standing. “Though,” the Corpsier said, not noticing as Ella began to twist open the water bottle's cap, “I have a feeling that physical conditioning isn't the only reason you're here.”

Ella froze momentarily. She hung her head low, sighing as she twisted the cap off the bottle. The bottle let out a light hiss, cold steam escaping from the top. She kept her gaze locked downward, onto the bottle. “We shoulda been able to take this one clean and simple.”

“I didn't even do anything as Commanding Officer.” Ella rubbed her hands against the cold glass bottle. “Our line crumbled after the counterattack.”

“You did the sensible thing to call the general retreat.” The Corpsier began to walk around the polished floor of the rec room, shoes creating a distinctive 'clack' against the floorboards. “There was nothing you could have done. Cut off from support, with your artillery and support units incapacitated—it may not have been the most honorable route, but you were able to salvage the majority of your force.”

Ella grit her teeth. “We ran like dogs, with our tails tucked between our legs.”

“Because the enemy sucker-punched you in a moment of weakness.” Ella could feel the Corspier's blackened goggles circling her as he walked. “In a proper fight, I do not think those tactics could work again.” The footsteps stopped. Ella looked up, surprised to see the Corpsier right in front of her again. “Do no be discouraged, Miss Cotton. This was a learning exercise--a wakeup call, if you can call it that."

“Say again?” Ella tilted her head.

“I will be outside the recreation room if you need me—and /do/ remember to keep hydrated, Miss Cotton; I would not want something as trivial as dehydration or heat exhaustion to fell you—not when there are so many more things afoot. Good day.” With a bow and a tip of the hat, the Corpsier left, leaving Ella alone in the rec room. She smiled, brushing her thumb over the condensation over the neck of the bottle. 'Crazy man,' she thought. She took a sip.

The liquid tasted sour, bubbling as it traveled down her throat. “Ugh, what the hell?” She looked down at the label. “Mineral water?”

For the longest time after the battle, Borislav had been looking at the Marine Spyglass he requisitioned from Fran.

For what he wanted it for, it served its purpose just fine, but at times, espeically when he was alone, he felt that it had something about it that made it almost special somehow.

So he decided to do a little studying, he looked back through the records of where Fran actually aquired it from. Curiosity hasn't hurt him before and it shouldn't know, maybe he would unlock some hidden potiential and make it shoot lasers, who knows.
