Though work delays, Privateer quest carries on!
>>
You are Elesh Phryx, rogue techpriest and captain of the Sword class frigate 'Sword of the Omnissiah'. Currently, you find yourself in the early stage of a friendly game of 'Assassin' deep within Gerin's club. Drink in hand, you weave your way across the floor of the club, eyeing watchful clusters of your fellow patrons engaged in games with their own crew members. Yelps of pain occasionally rise from the crowds or club at large as predators strike their prey with the small stun handles given at the door. Spotting Dess and Julin pick their way across the small maze of platforms above, you briefly thank the Omnissiah for your captain's immunity; you'll only become a valid target for your officers after one eliminates the others.

Current Party Bets:
Athe: 'One Night' (Athe's standard bet for years. Only you have managed to claim it, once)
Julin: 'One Night' (You note that Julin matched Athe's bet last time out of some rivalry)
Kelly: 'Five Massages'
Bob: a strange gem
Teris: 1 wealth
Dess: 1 bar tab
Elesh Phryx: One Night in the Captain's Quarters

There are new areas to be explored

Briefly, you consider your crew and their bets, deciding that Bob's bet is too mysterious to pass up winning. There may also be some kind of advantage due to her xenos reflexes, but your flesh brain notes that you are simply attempting to shield your greed with the guise of fair play. Fair play, hunting a crew member when they can't eliminate you back. Shut up. You are just weak flesh.

Soon, Bob lurks just beyond your reach; clearly stalking a target that you lack a line of sight on.

Something in your mind suddenly initializes, and you press yourself against the nearest crowd to conceal yourself from Bob's vision as she checks her surroundings. Your mechadendrites carefully guide a suitable patron toward your xenos prey as you walk slightly behind the strangely compliant drunkard. As your subject stalks her own prey, you carefully observe every detail of her movements; studying her inhuman grace as you search for a weakness or opening. A hand grabs your ass, though you ignore your cover's manipulation of your flesh in favor of taking in every detail of your target. Her arms parting a path before her with a strangely forceful yet passive touch, mostly hidden beneath her long, loose sleeves. The way her feet step lightly and transfer her weight with little sound despite the metallic grating. Her fingers wrapped around the small shock handle as she closes upon her target. Suddenly Bob freezes, crouching low to conceal her height in the flashing lights and crowd. By the Omnissiah, you can't help but note how her robe has suddenly clung to certain areas of the xeno.

Omnissiah give you strength, for your body betrays your excitement.

At least it wasn't a Nat 100...
That would probably involve mass property damage, mechandrites everywhere and everyone but the target getting stunned...

With her eyes locked upon her own prey, Bob fails to notice your approach until your mechadendrite applies your own shock handle to the taught cloth that stretches over her xenos ass. A cheer goes up as those nearby notice the quivering pile of xenos attempting to lift herself from the deck, soon aided by yourself. Positioning yourself under Bob's arm, you claim your victim's shock handle as her limbs struggle to recover from the stunning effect of your attack.

"To a mon'keigh... how disgraceful." slurs Bob.

"Perhaps next time you'll wager something more... pliable to redeem your honor?" you tease.

Helping your xenos companion to the nearest bar, you turn in her handle and collect a pair of free drinks thanks to a fellow patron. Some poor bastard is covering his bar tab, judging by how many drinks are being poured and the sour look upon another man's face.

"Come, Bob. Enjoy your drink and let us watch the others do battle!"

You're fairly sure that Bob's quiet words were xenos grumbling, but you simply attribute such things to her inglorious defeat. A new wave of games have begun, causing quite a bustle as the newcomers race to disperse into the crowds before the safeties release upon their handles. Soon after, a wave of howls and yelps reverberate within the club, setting a good number of patrons on edge as you pass with Bob in tow. Confident in your immunity, you greet several familiar captains and arrange to meet with them later, once your respective games have ended.

As you venture across the walkways of the club's second floor, fresh drink in hand, you hear a familiar voice cry out in pain. For a moment, you spot Athe as she vanishes into the crowds once more, leaving Kelly upon the ground in a heap. "Backstabber!" whispers the trembling woman.

You spend the next several hours with Bob and Kelly in tow, failing to locate any of your other officers. Making a run for the nearest bar, you bounce into two familiar faces: Captain Leros and Captain Baurse. "Captain Phryx! Having another game, are you? I've been having trouble keeping track of your new crew members, but I believe that your XO and armswoman are currently dueling for the chance to challenge you. Leros and I were just making a wager on the outcome of that little rivalry, care to advise him of your armswoman's certain defeat?" Leros doesn't seem pleased with Baurse's jovial mood, though you can't imagine the wager to be anything too drastic.

any wager made on your own game would be personal wagers, not the main betting pools.

>>19331250
"Nothing much, a few cargos"
>>
>>19331255
I suggest that is a terrible idea. For one thing, the odds are pretty heavily for Athe. For another, that would mean we would lose that crystal from Bob. Oh, and Athe collects our bet. Plus, I'm pretty sure that would carry risks, what with trying to fleece a bunch of pirates.
>>
>>19331208
Let us make a detailed study of liquor. We must determine what our favorite drink is.

I vote that we just find someplace defensive and get ready to cheat like the last time (with our mecha-tentacles)

Athe is soon spotted at the edge of the crowd, finishing off a drink before depositing her glass upon a serving girl's tray and giving the lass a firm send-off upon the rump. In a blur, Julin attacks from the crowd. Both officers struggle to land and deflect blows as their handles arc menacingly, causing the crowd to surge away from the dangerous pair. Eventually the pair circles, both determined to end their duel as the victor. As they clash once more, Athe finds herself parted from her handle and dodging Julin's arcing shock handle by mere nanometers. Patrons cheer and hollar as the women grapple, struggling to apply Julin's shock handle to the other.

"Julin will be victorious." deadpans Bob. "She has the superior leverage upon the handle and is forcing Athe's footing into poor position."

Soon the xenos' prediction seems to be correct, as Julin inches the crackling energies of the handle toward your XO's breast. Cries of dismay soon follow as Dess dashes from the encircling crowd, driving her handle into Julin's side. Athe quickly redirects the spasming armswoman's handle into Dess's belly in return, but soon finds herself beneath the two limp women as they struggle for breath.

Captains Baurse and Leros quickly begin arguing over their bet's status, while you glance about in confusion. Your handle should have buzzed to inform you that your immunity has worn off... Another player remains in the game.

That's... awfully specific. And rather unrelated to anything else.

Paranoia strikes your cogitators like orbital bombardment. "Teris" you hiss, searching wildly about for your head navigator. In a moment, you spot the gnarled woman several meters down the bar, identifying her only by the hand that now grasps a drink. In your excitement, you fail to notice Athe's move until you feel the slight pressure in the small of your back. Your cogitators prepare your augmentations for a power surge nanoseconds before the handle pours a numbing shock into your body.

Your chest heaves as you slowly refocus your vision upon Athe's pinned form, her arm sporting a slight mark where she eliminated herself with her own handle. A chaotic chorus of cheers, hoots and hollars surrounds you as your XO dreamily smiles in your direction. "Got you, Elesh." chuckles your friend, as you struggle to focus upon Kelly, the assassin whom stands over your stunned form. Your possible-future Senechal grins as she fishes a laspistol battery from her pocket.

"I touched both terminals by mistake, earlier. Athe noticed that it had roughly the same effect as the handles... and well, a plan formed, Captain."

Mechadendrites are simply extra limbs, we can't use the bladed attachments and such, so they are less useful than they might seem (especially the Medicae Mechadendrite). Having them gives our opponent more places to hit, after all. Besides, it's not like we can just take them off. Channelling THE RAW POWER OF HELL ITSELF into your opponent seems just a liiiiiittle more lethal than the game warrants.
As for "accidents happen," I'm pretty sure the safety measures for the navigators are designed so that no, they don't. And if they DID, given the collateral damage I suspect lynchings would happen, too.

"A good show, Kelly. Now help me up, that is an order."

In short order your officers have gathered to celebrate Kelly's victory, along with Captains Baurse and Leros. Dess and Leros soon lose themselves in a conversation about something called "Bounce", which seems to be some sort of art form that your flight lead hasn't quite perfected, while you talk business with Captain Baurse and your officers.

"I've come across another trio of carapace cargos, if you're in the market for such again, Captain Phryx. They're yours for a flat sixteen wealth." offers Baurse.
"Twelve. No more." scoffs Kelly, earning a studious glare from your fellow captain. "Devious and a barterer? Lass, do stop playing my heart strings." jests Captain Baurse.

Soon Julin has your ear, musing upon the lack of experienced armsmen available for hire at the moment. "The only armsmen worth their salt are the greenies, Captain. We can fill out our barracks to capacity with seven full strength companies for thirteen wealth. I believe we should divide up our veterans and mix them into the greenies as officers. We should have better survival rates as a result, unless we run into high grade combat servitors again."

>cont
>>
Athe is quick to follow on Julin's thread of thought. "I agree, Elesh. And I'd suggest we attempt the same with some veteran mining crew. If we do a one-ten ratio of veterans to rookies for the vessel, we could cut our crew costs down by perhaps three-quarters."

>34 current wealth
>purchase 3 cargos of carapace armor for 12 wealth? (will armor 3 companies. Currently have 1 company's worth of carapace)
>replentish armsmen to maximum strength for 13 wealth? (end result: 7,000 armsmen)
>Mix experienced armsmen with rookies?
>estimated cost of experienced miners with Athe's plan: 5 wealth for experienced miners / 8 experience for skilled miners
>>
>>19332094
I'd suggest 4 companies of armsmen for now. We can only armour 4 of them and the next mission doesn't exactly require us to use them.
>>
>34 current wealth

All of it. It leaves us with 4 wealth and buys everything we need to buy.
>>
Your response to your companions is muted by the sudden intrusion of klaxons sounding across the station.

"Attention all personnel. Incoming ships on system's edge. Report to your ships or stations!"

Vaguely, you recall the smaller, hat-wearing man behind that vox caster. And you're fairly sure he isn't comedic relief today.
