Space Combat Tuesday!
>>
>last time, on Privateer Quest Z...

"A good show, Kelly. Now help me up, that is an order."

In short order your officers have gathered to celebrate Kelly's victory, along with Captains Baurse and Leros. Dess and Leros soon lose themselves in a conversation about something called "Bounce", which seems to be some sort of art form that your flight lead hasn't quite perfected, while you talk business with Captain Baurse and your officers.

"I've come across another trio of carapace cargos, if you're in the market for such again, Captain Phryx. They're yours for a flat sixteen wealth." offers Baurse.
"Twelve. No more." scoffs Kelly, earning a studious glare from your fellow captain. "Devious and a barterer? Lass, do stop playing my heart strings." jests Captain Baurse.

>cont
>>
Soon Julin has your ear, musing upon the lack of experienced armsmen available for hire at the moment. "The only armsmen worth their salt are the greenies, Captain. We can fill out our barracks to capacity with seven full strength companies for thirteen wealth. I believe we should divide up our veterans and mix them into the greenies as officers. We should have better survival rates as a result, unless we run into high grade combat servitors again."

Athe is quick to follow on Julin's thread of thought. "I agree, Elesh. And I'd suggest we attempt the same with some veteran mining crew. If we do a one-ten ratio of veterans to rookies for the vessel, we could cut our crew costs down by perhaps three-quarters."

>34 current wealth
>purchase 3 cargos of carapace armor for 12 wealth? (will armor 3 companies. Currently have 1 company's worth of carapace)
>replenish armsmen to maximum strength for 13 wealth? (end result: 7,000 armsmen)
>Mix experienced armsmen with rookies?

>Elsewhere, in the Corgus Sector...

"Helm! Thirty degrees to port; Ten degrees positive pitch; All ahead full once corrections are made!" Advi's metallic voice pierces the wail of alarms that reverberate within her bridge as 'Heavenly Forge' breaks away from her ore extraction, venting a small portion of her atmosphere as several bulkheads struggle to close.
"Belay that!" cries a sister superior. "That course will put us in the path of the second torpedo volley!"

"Sister Jillian! Remove yourself from my bridge and prepare to repell boarders, you are relieved!" growls the techpriestess, setting her bionic eyes upon the XO. "Helm! Follow your orders or by the Omnissiah I will reboot you as a sanitations servitor!"

"Captain Advi! You can't be-" The XO's protests are cut short as Advi draws a bolt pistol and levels it before her, causing the sister to step back.

"Mutineers will be executed. You are relieved!" bellows the techpriestess' synthetic voice.

"I-... I am relieved, Captain." murmers sister Jillian, before making her exit with her face flushed.

"Helm! Bring us about immediately or 'Veriathia' will be crippled before her wings launch. Gunners! Bring our battery to bear on the torpedo volley and fire at will. Defensive turrets are to cycle immediately and prepare to defend the ship." As her bridge crew springs into action, Advi offers a silent prayer to the Omnissiah.

Bring it up to 5000, we want to leave some resources for Kelly to trade with

>Mix experienced armsmen with rookies?
yes

>estimated cost of experienced miners with Athe's plan: 5 wealth for experienced miners / 8 wealth for skilled miners
Do we know exactly how much taking skilled miners over experinced ones benefits us?
I would like to know some details to decide if it's worth the 3 wealth
>>
Your response to your companions is muted, but noted, by the sudden intrusion of klaxtons sounding across the station.

"Attention all personell. Incoming ships on system's edge. Report to your ships or stations! Medicae and Reclaimation bays stand by for wounded."

Vaguely, you recall the smaller, bespeckled man behind that vox caster. And you're fairly sure he isn't comedic relief today.

"Well shit. I'll have my crew double-time the delivery, Captain Phryx. But for the moment, I believe an orderly exit is required." grumbles Captain Baurse.

With a parting toast to good fortune, your small gaggle of privateers and characters of ill repute scatters to their respective ships.

"We'll get nowhere fast in this crowd, Elesh. Perhaps there is a hard line you could use to contact the officer of the watch? I can navigate the crowd easier alone and take command of the ship until you arrive." Athe appears to be fairly drunk, though you noted she took a sobriety pill a few moments before. Your own potentia coil is currently processing your own alcohol levels at maximum capacity, though you'll need to either cool your cyber mantle or expend the resulting energy soon to avoid complications.

"I'll round up the mining specialists." says Kelly.

"The armsmen are likely mustering near 'Sword of the Omnissiah', Captain. I should follow in Athe's wake and hire the desirable ones." shrugs Julin.

>go for the hard connection?
>push thru the crowd?
>>
>>19375977

Tortuga is technically "ruled" by a Rogue Trader dynasty, but they mostly just enforce the peace and reap the profits that flow into the system by way of pirates and other outlaws.

There is no "defense force" per se, but the system's stations have defenses and host a veritable hornet's nest of various raiders

"Make your ways. I know of a hard line nearby."

It only takes you moments to access the back area of Garin's club and locate a hard connection. The Omnissiah has also seen fit to bless you with a nearby source of cooling in the form of an ice-maker, into which your mechadendrites greedily dive.

"Captain Elesh! We have word from 'Heavenly Forge'. Saregin's Path is currently under attack by renegade forces. There are rumors of several other systems sending distress signals as well; Serentus and Feophe are among them."

"And the forces at system's edge?"

"Our augers are currently hampered by the station's mass, Captain. We couldn't see a planet if it wasn't there when we docked. We've accounted for roughly half of our crew, though. I estimate an hour until all are aboard. Even a raider couldn't be upon the station from system's edge in less than four."

You attempt to contact Magos Banks, but can only gather information from one of his underlings.

"Captain Phryx? By the Omnissiah. A fleet is emerging upon the system's edge. Forgemaster Banks is rallying those ships under his command to Belius Airus, and preparing to evacuate what can be saved in time. We've confirmed the presence of a pair of Slaughter-class cruisers and a score of escort-sized contacts, and the Navigator Guild claims to sense additional ships nearing the system in the warp. It is an invasion."

"Slaughter-class?" Your weak flesh pales at the mere thought of a single ship of such construction, but a pair? "Omnissiah preserve us. Renegades?"

"The Omnissiah's logic suggests such. The Forgemaster plans to scuttle the station's plasma reactors to deny the corruption of the machine spirits left behind."

"Feed incoming tactical data to my ship via the station's docking cables. Forgemaster Banks would approve such a request, I'm sure."

"May the Omnissiah bless your ship's spirit, Captain."

Leaving Gerin's and the hard line behind, you push your way thru the station's docks toward your ship.

There might be more people on the station than the number Banks can evacuate. In that case, take whoever we can, but make sure that we have the supplies and security forces to keep them fed and contained during the escape.

>>19376959

From the station's auger feeds, you estimate roughly thirty raider-sized ships are present, along with a pair of lunar cruisers and perhaps six light cruisers and frigates.

There may be as many as 100 different transports in the system as well, though you have no idea which have weapons or warp drives. Except for one: 'Zephyr Spirit' that fine vagabond class transport has a functional warp drive but no ship-class weapons systems. You own 40% of her.
>>
>>19377035
Huh. We might actually stand a chance if those are the forces here. Except for the fact that it's not really an organized fighting force and everyone will be out for themselves. That severely limits their abilities against a chaos fleet like this.
>>
>>19377035
>Except for one: 'Zephyr Spirit' that fine vagabond class transport has a functional warp drive but no ship-class weapons systems.
>You own 40% of her.
Then we'd better stick around long enough to ensure it warps out intact.
>>
>>19377035
Judging from all this, what would our chances be if we decided to rally them all and fight it out, maybe exploiting any stationary defenses the system has?

Also, is anyone in charge and capable of rallying all of these ships (like the rogue trader dynasty?)?
>>
>defense force breakdown (estimated)
2 Lunar class cruisers (RT Vesoni Dynasty)
4 Light cruisers (2 Vesoni Dynasty, 1 Denastus Dynasty, 1 Ingysus Dynasty)
2 Frigates (Pirates)
~10 raiders (owned by RT Dynasties, assorted)
~20 raiders (owned by pirates)

Transports are a truely mixed lot of ownership.

As you inspect the information, another cruiser-sized contact emerges from the warp at the system's edge...

>>19377119
I'd bet that magos banks could convince them, if anyone could... but I doubt that we should take any of those ships as they would be completely warp-tainted...
>>
>>19377143
Do we really have time to figure out who is skilled and who isn't among the refugees?

I'd say we just let on as many as we can carry and un-dock from the station in a hurry. I'm sure the Emperor will see to it that worthy souls find their way to our ship.
>>
>>19377119
In the few instances of possible battles or conflict within Tortuga, the Vesoni Dynasty's cruisers have sallied fourth and been backed up by those parties seeking their favor or wishing to see the non-hostility status of the system upheld.

No one has ever attacked Tortuga, though. The dynasties might be willing to put aside their disputes to defend the system.

... or they might abandon their rivals in the midst of battle and laugh as they are destroyed or captured to be sacrifices to dark gods...

Let's not even ponder how quickly most pirate captains would decide to fuck off and save themselves.
>>
>>19377143
Take refugees, skilled people and people willing to pay get priority get priority.

If they are neither, let them in if we can take them, but they get lowe priority as far as comfort is concerned and make sure to have armsmen watching over them.

Send a message to Banks not to blow up the station just yet, it might still be possible for the rogue traders to defend the system.
If it looks like they stand a chance join in and help.
Otherwise, GTFO.
>>
>>19377173
your armsmen are (by default) armed with partial-flak voidsuits and lasguns (which is why you have to pay to recruit them, life is cheap!)

You currently have carapace armor to equip 4,000 armsmen. (will eventually be integrated into voidsuits, but can be worn over for the time being)

suggest away, but note that supply may be an issue.

'Sword of the Omnissiah' opens her open spaces to what refugees her systems can handle, though you are sure to accept those with skills or offering wealth above those begging to be saved. Kelly is quickly busied about the task of consolidating a small assortment of payments and cargos offered for passage, while you mentally consolidate several data streams from the station upon your Captain's throne.

It seems that each station is rallying what ships are willing and preparing to escape with what they can, while the growing renegade fleet at the system's edge seems hesitant to attack the forces present while they linger under the protection of the stations. Magos Banks is busy converting every transport lacking a warp drive into fire ships while his priests strip what they can from the station itself. Broken reports of a massive riot raging among the spires of the system's main station have begun to filter out, and there are reports of redemptionists attempting to storm the Navigator Houses that reside there.

As you note yet another contact emerge upon the system's edge, Navigator Teris approaches. With a grim face, the gnarled woman bows.

"Captain, I've been entrusted with watching over those Navigators of my house that wait upon Belius Airus. I've already made payment to Kelly for their transport, but must speak with you of our contract."

"My House is likely overrun and slain, Elesh. The thirty or so I now have aboard are all that remains. I wish to enlist them as crew, not a hired party, and suspend our current agreement to join your crew as well. Well. Having them as crew is helpful. Having an alliance with a navigator house is also helpful, though given how weak it will be, less helpful than it could be. But this "all captured navigators go to her" thing... Worrying. The last thing we need is the enmity of every navigator house with a member serving on a ship we capture. Most of which will be more powerful than her house, and some of which will likely be quite powerful indeed. For that matter, how does Teris plan to control any such navigators she takes?
I think we need to discuss things with her later, at length, before we can agree to this.

Uniform (Good quality) 15
Every soldier, needs a good quality uniform, for at any moment he may be asked to die in it. This version is more durable and can have a 2 or 3 colour camouflage pattern. It will go a long way to improving moral and combat effectivness.

Armour:
Enforcer light carapace 575 Rare
Enforcer light carapace is much cheaper than regular carapace thus humans can move around in it more freely. Thus it can be used to 7 times the people than with 1 normal carapace. Can later replace chestplate and helmet with carapace for 600 and 250 respectivly. This will add armour onto the vital areas the head and chest.

Good quality flak helmet AP3 75 Rare
For now it should be issued with a good quality flak helmet (75). It is most advisable to enhance this and the light and regular carapace with deflective construction.

Deflective Construction +1 Scarce
Effect: This upgrade grants a suit of armour 2 additional
armour points against any attack with the Explosive or
Rending damage types.

Guard flack armour 300 scarce
Another option is: As gaurd flack armour is only scarce and allready has AP4 all and AP5 against explosives, it is allready quite versatile and is best enhanced with relfec as this is rare but will not substantially increase the overall aquisition roll. If memory serves it works out in total as rare, for carapace with reflec. Thus i recommend this as standard issue.

Reflec Coating +0 Rare
Effect: Armour with this upgrade increases its AP by 2
against all Las-weapons.

Photo Visors/Monocular 50
Instead of providing two (one per eye), issue each armsman 1 attached to helmet via a toolmount. Keeping functionality while cutting price in half.
>>
"You have yourself a- ... Teris, might I ask why you need to claim any navigators we capture?"

The Navigator studies you for a moment, perhaps confused by your sudden change of thought. "My house is few in number, but stable genetically. We can't exactly... prosper without taking samples from other navigator houses."

"We'll talk on the implications of that later, Teris. For now, more pressing matters must be dealt with."

"Very well, Captain. We will serve well." The navigator takes her leave of the bridge, allowing Kelly to introduce the slightly scrawny, strangely well dressed man with her.

"Captain, I've located a doctor, and thought he might make a good addition to our crew." The woman grins, clearly proud of her find. "Doctor, Captain Elesh Phryx. Captain, the doctor."

"Doctor...?"

"Oh, just 'doctor', usually 'the doctor' since everyone else calls them self some funny title or I'm the only one about." The man looks about your bridge, clearly happy to study his surroundings for the time being. "A pleasure to meet you, Captain Phryx. I've been informed you required a doctor? I'd quite like to join a crew and see the sector. Something refreshing about humanity and adventure, there is!"

As finding ammunition can be expensive. Its best to leave that money for ammunition for larger heavy weapons.

Rifle:
Hellgun Basic 110m S/3/– 1d10+4 E 3 40 3Full — 6kg† 180 Rare
Hellguns wich can later be provided with upgrades such as scope or a grenade launcher. Should be issued to all armsmen.
A personal boltgun or hellgun upgraded with Lathe steel construction could dramatically increase its stats.

CQC:
Shotlas Basic 20m S/3/– 1d10+5 E 1 20 2 Full 4 Scarce
- overcharge pack (modified) 15

2ndary weapon:
Armsman-10 Pistol 35m S/3/– 1d10+3 I 0 13 Full — 1.5kg 50 Plentiful
- torch mount 10
- can be upgraded with special ammo
The only autoweapon in the armory, issued to high importance personnel such as science team.

Sharpshooter
Long Las Basic 150m S/–/– 1d10+4 E 1 20 Full Accurate, Reliable 4.5kg 100 Scarce
- fire selector 35 (x2 hotshot, x1 overcharge mag of 20)
- overcharge pack (modified above) 15
- Hot-shot charge x2 = 30 developing 1d10+5 E ap 4
This rifle is fairly easy to procure, but packs a greater damage and AP for its range.

Ask him for his name, so we can write it in the crew roster if nothing else.

Then, finish packing up and join any defensive formation you can find.
The heretics are still probably wary of the station's defenses, so try to find a position that exploits that.

Given we were doing that under the orders of a direct AdMech superior, and we rescued a number of the Omnissiahs servants who were falsely accused... Nope.

Also what i meant was, i chose lasweapons due to the cheapness of finding laspacks, charging them and their general reliability.

There are a few other possibilities down the line such as producing special gear.

Not to mention the camouflage uniforms and special equipment for sharpshooters. Sounds more like a loadout for ground troops to me.

"Name? Oh, I've been called lots of names. Few of them suitable for polite conversations." jests the man. Your lack of amusement plain, the doctor simply shrugs. "Call me Noble, if you must call me by a name. Doctor Noble. Perhaps I'll start a business some day, 'Noble Corporation' has quite a ring to it!"

Well, we may well be using some armsmen in ground ops, so having some equipped with that might be useful, but yeah.

Personally, I want to manufacture our own Skitarii, but that will take a while before we can do it.

Also, let's linger in the system for a little while. If it looks like the Rogue Trader dynasties are going to stay and fight, I say we join in the battle. Otherwise, gtfo.

I don't want to let the chaos fucks take this system unless we really see no other option
>>
>>19378589
you have space left for refugees, but you stopped loading to prevent overextending your ship's life support.
>>
OK then. Let us do this then.
>>19378608
>>
"Kelly, find doctor Noble quarters and then see him to the medicae deck. We're leaving port."

'Sword of the Omnissiah' is soon orbiting Belius Airus at the edge of the station's deadly weapons range. For hours you linger as a pair of raiders, Infidel class, slowly close upon the station and slowly shadow your orbit at the edge of combat range. Similar scenes slowly pain out across the sector as small groups of ships gather and pirates gather their nerve.

Magos Banks eventually contacts you personally, his form covered in unguents, oils, and various other substances. "Elesh, I need a captain that I can trust."

Ask him what he intends to do, ask him what he needs us for.

"There is one chance at Tortuga surviving this, Elesh. I've converted thirty transports and raiders into fire ships. I need a commander for this force, willing to lead and defend it until the slaughter-class cruisers are forced to move and prevent the force's 'escape'. Only with those menaces crippled or destroyed will the dynasties mount a defence instead of fleeing, and even then it will be a hard battle."

"And I am to support the attack when it happens?"

"No, if you have done your job... you'll either be crippled or forced to flee the system. I can offer full ownership of 'Zephyr Spirit' as your payment. She'd be making the run with the fire ships to escape regardless..."

>orders?
>>
>>19379016
We're in, ask for any reinforcements and assistance he can provide and load all shields and weapons
>>
>>19379049
I think the point of this is there won't be reinforcements. He's kind of asking us to throw ourselves into the line of fire of their biggest ships to let the fire ships get their attack off. If he throws in repairing our ship, I guess we could consider it since this will be painful as hell... Might want some more people to chime in on this.
>>
>>19379049

your force would consist of:
24 transport fire ships (macrocannons on all, self destruct)
6 raider fire ships (macrocannons, self destruct)
5 transport ships (macrocannon, warp-capable, priority: ESCAPE)
Any additional forces you can muster for a potential suicide mission

the remainder of Banks' assets will be committed to assist in the battle proper
>>
>>19379118
Well, this is going to suck, but let's do this shit.

Ask Banks or anyone else nearby if they can fire a coordinated torpedo volley to help us.

A suicide run + mass torpedo volley is going to be a lot more difficult to deal with than just a suicide run.

So, look for all torpedo-capable ships, probably cobra-class destroyers or something similar and ask their captains if they are willing to do this. It's not even a high risk job if they stay at maximum range and just fire torpedoes.

Then, we must use the raiders and other combat ships to harass while the converted trasports rush in on a suicide run while any strike craft we can scrounge up cover them as best they can.

Once they get into range, ram the targets and fire everything.
Losing the converted raiders is accpetable, but we should avoid it if at all possible.
>>
>>19379016
Might as well do it. Time to be big, damn heroes and get us a new ship.
>>
>>19379230
We already part own the 'zepher spirit...
>>
>>19379202
>torpedos
>attack craft

the chances of the RT dynasties having such things are slim, let alone the pirate forces in the system.

>How will you lure the enemy cruisers into your fire ship formation?
>charging escort-speed ships with transports less than half their speed will -not- work very well
>>
>>19379313
Have the transports form up into a convoy and head for the edge of the system. We (along with the converted raiders) should take up positions as though we were escorting them.

Hopefully Chaos will assume the transports must contain highly valuable cargoes and close to boarding range. As they approach, we should take a few shots at them to support this idea, before falling back. Then boom.
>>
>>19379313
No torpedoes or strike craft?
... Well, fuck
Alright, looks like we have no choice but to make it look like an escape convoy (and it kindof is one) and position the fire ships so that they can change course and attack.

If possible, use the nearby celestial bodies to surprise the enemy, maybe hide the fleet behind a large asteroid or maybe even a moon, planet or something, making it look like we are trying to use it to cover our escape, but instead of moving onwards once we are out of sight, we turn the fleet around and get ready to charge at them while they are coming at us.

Considering how slow and bulky cruisers are, they should not be able to dodge if we pull this off right,
>>
>>19379313
Could we get a rough map of the space surrounding Tortuga?
Beyond that I support the convoy idea.
>>

>>19379389

clearly, information on Slaughter classes is required...

Speed: 9
Port/Prow/Starboard macrobatteries & Port/Starboard Lance batteries (range 5 and 6, respectively)

You must -lure- these ships into range of your fire ships, instead of just having escorts chase you down.

There are two Slaughter-class cruisers in the enemy fleet.
>>
>>19379477
Well, fuck, then.
So, we have to make them try to board us or something like that?
I have no idea as to how we could try to do that, aside from presenting them as juicy targets and hope the enemy takes the bait.
>>
>>19379477
Perhaps we should create some fake comm chatter about having finished loading the contents of the treasure vaults of Belius Airus onto the freighters to keep it from falling into the hands of Chaos.

There's no way the cruiser captains would let the raiders claim such a prize. They'd want to move in and claim the loot personally.
>>
>>19379477
We could use the escaping transports as bait for the escorts, so we send out some fire ships to flank the slaughters, then once the escorts take the bait, we charge right down their throughts with the others.

This is probably the safest. Perhaps throw in some chatter about some holy artifact being held on the ship or something along those lines.
>>
>>19379649
Head "north" with the convoy. When the cruiser inevitably move to block our path, signal that we surrender the convoy and fall back towards the inner system. The convoy starts to scatter, as it ought to, and the cruiser move in close to capture what they think are fleeing merchant ships. Then set off the bombs.
