As promised, I return with the South Continent evo game! This time, we'll be evolving creatures in the South continent of this yet-unnamed planet, which has a wide variety of ecosystems. Prominent among these ecosystems, however, is a prairie/plains kind of ecosystem.

The rules are simple:
1) evolve a creature by modifying their picture and giving a plausible reason.
2) only a single modification/upgrade may be made per 'update'.
3) you can choose different species to upgrade.
4) I'll be plopping some events which you can adapt your creatures to, and decide if any updates are invalid.

And we start with the Thudder, which descended from the Glund, and its evolutionary brother will evolve into the Ramel. But who knows, what will this territorial herbivore evolve to in this continent?
>>
File: 1341051446035.png-(38 KB, 500x500, puruu.png)
38 KB
The second creature is the Puruu, which evolved from the Fus. In the South, they were spared from the extinction of their kin in other continents. They live in marshes near the coast, and eat algae and small plants.
>>
File: 1341051587787.png-(47 KB, 500x500, lub.png)
47 KB
Next we have the Lub, another Fus-derived creature that had uniquely evolved in the South. They formed symbiosis with an algae that grows on their skin, and they live in aquatic environments such as lakes, rivers, marshes, and the shallow waters near South.
>>
File: 1341051776448.png-(35 KB, 500x500, schwar.png)
35 KB
Another holdover from eras bygone, the Schwar evolved from the Worem. Little has changed from the past, their only notable change is that they grew an air-breathing lung. These scavengers and very small creature hunters are amphibious, and thus can be found where water is abundant.
>>
File: 1341052072040.png-(43 KB, 500x500, hamun.png)
43 KB
Next we have the Hamun, a Sluck descendant unique to the continent. This lithovore (it eats dirt and rock) has two armored parts which it can retract into. When it's not threatened, it will slowly munch into rocks and extend its algae-crusted tendrils in the sun. It lives in the sun-baked plains.
>>
File: 1341052260042.png-(56 KB, 500x500, gesh.png)
56 KB
We also have the Gesh, a predator with a jaw that can break Hamun shells. It shares ancestry with the Geists that live in the caves below the South Continent, and is a far relative of the Cidex. It lives in the plains and marshes.
>>
File: 1341052409420.png-(35 KB, 500x500, yazda.png)
35 KB
Next we have the Yazda, an Adoni descendant. It flits in the plains, jungles and marshes of the South, and the only place it haven't reached is the mountains. They suck nectar and blood equally.
>>

>>
File: 1341052678516.png-(76 KB, 500x500, lacorra.png)

Next we have the Lacorra, which is actually a Sluck descendant. This sedentary creature makes hollow pipes made out of metal and dirt it absorbed through the ground, and it also attained symbiosis with a plant, which grows in the pipes and supplies the creature with sugar. To complete its diet, though, it extends tentacles to grab flyers and plant spores. These tentacles also act as lungs.
>>
HELL YEAH!
This is gonna be good!
>>
What plantlife does this continent have?
>>
File: 1341053703740.png-(46 KB, 500x500, siwari.png)
46 KB
On to the plants! Here we have the Siwari, which takes the niche Hrass took on the other continents. It can reproduce by dropping its tough leaf where it will take root, and by making a small flower for flyers to pollinate.
>>
Oh noes! why do i have to be at work right now of all times! damn you stupid sexy IG!
>>
And there's also the Hexis, a tree that has taken over Frillas' niche in this continent. It grows in a helical fashion, and spreads its spores far and wide. They make up the forest.

That's all the evolvable creatures in the surface of the continent, now go evolve them!

The Hump Gesh has slowed down alot, to the point where mold and moss grows on it. Gesh does not care. indeed, the moss and mold seem to have psychoactive qualities to them. This ensures two things. The gesh is in a constant state of hallucination, and that any predator who attacks a Gesh herd will be tripping balls. Some creatures will "Groom" the gesh by licking them. This seems to have a strange effect on the creature depending on the species.

Some species of Hexis in the drier plains begin to form re-filling pools of water laced with naturally produced glucose at their base. Lining the edge of the water with their pollen, the Hexis use these watering holes as a constant source of pollinators; everything from insects to animals who come far and wide to get a drink.

The requirements to sustain this are taxing, however, and because of this the tree's roots have to grow further into the ground, tapping into the vast aquifers of the plains.

Forced to choose between removing it's precious water reservoir or shorten, it decided to grow shorter, supplementing it's smaller volume of water with more glucose and minerals, making the liquid invigorating, refreshing, and most importantly highly attractive as a water source in the scorching plains. Curiously enough, the traditional Helix design of the plant's ancestors seem to be disappearing, although it's very much apparent in the root system, the plant's trunks seem to gravitate towards arching over the water gourd, as though enhancing the promise of a cool shade and refreshing drink.

The leaves of the Oasis Plant darken with wax as they attempt to shield themselves from the brutal onslaught of the Suns.

Other then those developments, the Oasis Plant seems to flourish, spreading out via a massive, intricate system of roots that support each plant with water absorption and mineral extraction from the expansive underground aquifers of the South Continent. Vast stretches of the plains could be covered by a single "individual" Oasis Plant.

Burly

The burly chompers have developed a larger feet for running faster. They live in packs of two to three families with life long mates. They nap for about an hour every six. They eat all plants. all the time. fuck you.

Hump Gesh

The hallucinogenic hump gesh has grown taller, able to run from threats like wild fires. They live in packs of 6-9, and mate once a season, with no real strong familial bonds once the children are able to walk. They are awake at day, asleep at night, and eat siwari plants. They have a miasma of mold, mildew, and fugus that clings to their fur, which causes intense hallucinations in them, and their predators.

Lets talk vegetation. Hexis is the prime type of tree on this continent. Depending on the species it can be a soft sap filled wood, like if you can imagine balsa with pine sap. Or a hard wood like redwood, mahogany, or ironwood.

Great Helix- Massivly large, up to 60 stories tall. hard wood, thick fire resistant bark. somewhat rare.

Helix- 12-20 stories tall. softer wood, thick pine like sap. will occasionally explode in wild fires. waxy needle like leaves. very common

Forest- where there is abundant rain, and tropical conditions these trees have evolved to take advantage. spread quickly, but die quickly when the environment changes. common

Flatlands water hole- grows along the underground aquifers, spaced miles apart from one another. somewhat rare.

oasis water hole- same as above, but more stunted due to a life in the desert. very rare.

Basic- the fucker that started this all. is slowly beign edged out of existence by the competition

Stumpy- an offshoot of the basic, suffering the same fate.

The hump gesh are gone, replaced by the Gesh Dreamers. These creatures spend their entire lives in a symbiosis with their hallucinogenic mold/fungi/mildews that grow in their fur, lungs, and body. The lines between reality and not are non existent to them. Any creature that gets near them will start to experience what the gesh does. Gesh do not exactly defend themselves, but they will turn to face their attacker, and exhale/ sigh deeply, giving them a concentrated blast of hallucinogens.

A new lub splinter species emerges.

The balloon lub evolved from the great lubs. Their ancestor's gasbags increased in volume, until they contained enough gas to lift the whole creature to air.

While floating, these lubs were now safe from getting eaten by Puruus or schwars, and thus quickly proliferated. They are encountered in humid areas, as they need loads of water to survive. They are often seen floating slightly above the surfaces of lakes and rivers, only extending their "tail" tentacle to the water in order to "drink".

Their smaller tentacles catch pollen and spores of plant life, from which they get their nutrients.
They get their energy from the increased amount of algae that lives in their skin.

17 KB
Cruncher is a species that developed from the base chompers, and thus, they are the cousins of chompas. Unlike their cousins, the Crunchers retained their carnivorous diet, and over the generations, they became more and more better suited for it.
They started to lose their armor, as it only slowed them down. They got bigger, and faster, their jaws got stronger and they lost the remains of their face blade.

The Crunchers hunt everything in the plains, even each other, which is one of the reasons they still retain parts of their armor. It can save them from being killed by a bigger Crunchers.
The Crunchers kill their prey by crushing them between their beaked jaws. They are capable of breaking bones with their jaws.
They are solitary hunters, which run their prey down. They usually prefer to ambush their targets however.

They only tolerate each other during the mating season, when the males and the larger females gather into large groups, and the males wrestle for dominance and try to impress the females. Curiously, they do not kill each other during the mating season. Their wrestles are only to over power the opposer, not to kill him. The mating season marks a ceasefire for the otherwise non stop lethal struggle the crunchers have between each other.

Siwari are really needing a little more diversity. So far, it looks like they've become trees.

Branching off from the original, a smaller species of Siwari emerges in the great savanna. It has dropped the small fruit in favor of a structure more resembling a cone. While others have tried just resisting the occasional wildfire, this sort takes advantage of them. This Siwari's seeds are fire resistant. When all other vegetation is gone, all of the seeds have an open field of fertile ash from which to grow. The are among the first plants to reclaim an area after a fire.

When Lubs lived in the sea, they reproduced by spewing gametes into the water, to be mixed and carried by the current (like Earth sponges). However, in resting upon the surface of the Southern Continent's rivers like lily pads, their seed is no longer easily dispersed, usually "drooling" into the waters around the parent, to mix at the river bed, too heavy to be carried upon the wind.
Of course, soon the banks become choked with these dinner-plate sized creatures.
Eventually a strategy develops, thread-like protrusions emerging from their gamete pores now produce a sweet perfume, attracting hungry flying creatures (Yazda, perhaps?), who, curious as to the source, investigate, and then inevitably get the pollen-like goo that is Lub gametes. Like bees pollinating flowers, this serves to spread the genes of the Flower Lub far and wide, giving the "parent's" breathing room in their pond.

Due to the prevalence of poison in their environment, Tree Puruus now circulate a unique antivenom through their veins - the chemical isolates ingested or inserted poisons and transfers them to holding sacs within the body, which then distribute the mixture across pores in the skin. This oily chemical acts as a natural insect repellent in addition to producing a distinctly sweet scent which the Puruus can follow to locate each other.

As a result, Puruus are becoming a more social species. They are drawn to each others' sweet scents - so much so that they will remain together in small packs. Tree Puruus do not compete fiercely with each other for territory, or even for mating privileges. The Puruu population does not require internal competitive control, as it is kept in check by the Chompers. Tree Puruus nest and hide in the Hexis trees for safety.

Their repellent has reduced the role of many Yazdas in their diet, with the exception of the Leaf Yazdas, who fall prey due to their behavior of hiding motionlessly until the unbearable scent of a Tree Puruu forces them to stir and attempt to escape. The movement betrays their camouflage and they are easily consumed by nearby Puruus with sharp eyes and fast reflexes.

Tree Puruus are losing the venom in their tongues. Fast, powerful, sticky, whiplike tongues are proving to be a much more successful hunting tool for them.

Though, I did come up with a serious reason for the evolution

Runnas sure are good at running. But when they're being chased, they wish they were better! Well not to fear, its evolution time! The lungs and heart of the Runnas go into overdrive when frightened. This causes their muscles to swell with oxygenated blood, so much so that their skin turns a bright red. So now Red Runans go fasta!
>>
>>19716195
This brings some questions to mind. Since an individual Puuru is actually a colony of many different jellyfish-like creatures acting as one, how do they work exactly? We should really discuss this.

Given the feast that a single Thudder can offer to a Schwarr, they decide to spread the wealth. Female Schwarr will now lay their eggs while burrowed inside a Thudder, allowing its young a free meal at the start at their lives.
>>
>>19716854
Sorry to say, but they have an exoskeleton, so I don't think they could really get that appearance from their blood showing through skin. Unless... The shell is unusually clear in this species. Yeah... This could work.
>>

That or the shell itself if vascular, much like human bones.

Sexual dimorphism becomes apparent in the Oasis Tree (both the small and large variety.) Although the tree reproduces asexually, a constant influx of fresh DNA-laden pollen is needed to maintain a healthy growth. To do this, the female variety of the tree develops a unique approach to this issue.

The signature pool for the female Oasis is gone, replaced with a tough, barky "nut" dotted with holes. These holes are normally inaccessible due to the presence of a rubbery, mildly adhesive sphincter at the hole's entrance. Intelligent creatures will rapidly notice however, that in the presence of Male Oasis pollen the sphincters relax and open, allowing a creature access to the sweet smelling substance within. As the creature happily laps up this nectar, however, their pollen-laden necks rub against the hole's lining, fertilizing the plant in the process.

The nectar, known better as Ambrosia, is a sweet smelling, yellow viscous fluid heavy in sugars, vitamins and minerals. Ambrosia's most unique chemical, however, is caffeine. The addictive yet ultimately advantageous qualities of Ambrosia are meant to hook creatures to the substance, and in the process ensure a steady supply of happy, pollinated customers.
>>
>>19717312

(Blegh, read this over and thought I'd need to explain it a lot more plain, mind's kinda off right now; female Oasis plants basically produce a highly nutritious, caffeinated golden liquid that is only accessible if you've been drinking at a Male Oasis plant recently... Or perhaps have a specialized mouth/small enough to get through the lining. It's Pavlovian training at it's finest; you get pollen on your neck, you get your fix.)

You know who's been left out? Hamun.

>>19696112
The slime-hamun's slime glands distend, allowing it to cover a wider area and feed more efficiently. It anchors itself into the ground with its slimy appendages and sits in place, mixing up pools of muddy slime and feeding off the particulate. Once the pools begin to get too large for the hamun to effectively feed from, it slurps up the highly cohesive slime and shifts a meter or so before repeating the process.

Not an artist by any means. I hope my edits don't clash with the original art too much.

Functionally, they're like a single organism. I tried reading up on the Portuguese Man o' War, which is the most well-known siphonophore but nobody seems to properly understand the distinction between it, a multicellular organism, and a colonial organism.

Presumably, it releases parts of itself into the water, which multiply and assemble a new puruu. If it's anything like earth siphonophores, anyway.

Would they actually have respiratory or circulatory systems, and do they have a strait digestive track, or just a digestion cavity like jellyfish?
Might be a good idea to go to the IRC for this.

In some of the amphibious Puruus, the bell like structure has moved up to be in between the two rear sets of legs. Normally, it curved around the front of the creature, and is used to swim like a jellyfish. It can also reverse this structure to curve around the legs instead, but it's more difficult to swim in this fashion. From the skirt-like appearance of the Bell Puruu's swimming membrane, it earns the nickname Lake Maiden. These are fully aquatic.

The Maned Gesh is more muscular, more agile and more quick then its relatives. They hunt in prides Composed of an Alpha male and several lesser males. Back in their dens The Alpha female and numerous other females fiercely defend their territory and young. While only the males possess the white side stripes, Only the Alpha Male and Female possess the luxurious manes that are the namesake of their species.

The Alpha Male and Female are obligated to mate. However the male offspring of the Alphas are forced out of the pride upon maturity. The rest of the pride is permitted to mate only in times when food and water is in abundance. However any offspring are slave to the whims of the Alphas and if food, water or shelter is scarce the pups might find themselves turned into a snack.

while the Runnas of the plains get faster, the Runnas of the forest get more secretive.

Forest Runnas are an incredibly rare sight. Their skittish nature combines with their camouflage coloration to help hide them within the misty forests of the Eastern Island, upon which they have flourished.

Their scent glands have all but vanished to help mask their presence, which has caused a social devolution toward the dominant male needing to hold his ground by physical means.

As the increased amount of metal in their shells, combined with the algae they house in it have given their shells a blueish hue.
The lacorra colony now generates a large electric field of it's own, that allows them to spot intruders to their domain.

To combat the predation of the tubefaces, the lacorras have developed a new method of defense. Offense. Now, they surge towards anything that tries to eat them, and try to latch on to the attacker's skin. They have developed small hooks that pierce skin, and when they make contact with a target, the lacorra wraps itself around it tightly, and begins to channel the electricity of the whole colony to the target. As they pierce the skin of the attacker, they deliver the potent shocks to it's innards too.

The climber puruu continues to adapt to their arboreal existence. Their legs become longer, their body more flexible and their toes more dexterous.

Their increased social interaction also fuels the growth of their brain cluster, allowing them to work and hunt together better.

As the puruus are asexual, there isn't any need to compete for mates or anything. The puruu pack collectively defends their nests, which they make in the pools and other still bodies of water in which they lay their eggs. (Which are actually just clusters of basic puruu micro-organisms which then start to multiply and form a miniature puruu.

As the whole pack lays their eggs in the same pool, the younglings emerging from it often contain genetic material from all the pack members. This is because in the early stages of the "egg's" development, it can easily combine with another egg, which results in a mixture of micro-organisms from both "parents". These micro-organisms can exchange DNA with each other, and thus, the puruu have micro-scale sexual reproduction going on in their breeding pools.

>>19722439
> no picture, behavioral change only.
The 5-inch long centipede that is the Tree Schwar begins to prey on Puuru eggs, taking advantage of a curious quirk of the adorable siphoniphore's biology.

As their eggs are naught but a cluster of micro-organisms, Tree Schwars can happily nibble at an egg and if there's enough left, it will end up growing up anyway. If there isn't enough left, the critters present in several half-eaten eggs will seek out and merge in order to have the "critical-mass" needed to make a full-Puuru.

Puuru's recognize this, and will often not even stop Tree Schwars that wander into their nests, placidly watching as long as the egg/clusters/micro-organism packets aren't eaten wholesale. Guests with such terrible manners are ousted by the whole Puuru colony, and while it does happen, the Tree Schwar species leans toward a few nibbles in peace rather than a riskier method with little added benefit (actually, that brings up a question, what do Puurus have in the way of natural defenses?).

The balloon lub develops a ballast like organ, that it can fill with water to weight itself down.
This organ "anchors" the creature to a water source, making it less likely for it to get swept away by a strong wind. It also gathers nutrients from the water trough this organ.

They also start forming large colonies, wrapping their smaller tentacles together for better safety against the winds. These tentacles also catch pollen and spores of plants, which the lub absorbs and eats.

These balloon lub "forests" can cover larke swathes of water, as they have no competition or nor does anything eat them. As a result of their exponential growth, many of the lakes and rivers have now very little sunlight, as the balloon lubs absorb it before the rays enter the water.

In coasts, they have yet to form very big colonies, as the more potent currents separate them and sweep them away.

An offshoot of the Hexis Bush appears, utilizing the wind and fire of the plains to it's advantage for spore dispersal. The spores are covered in soft, silvery fluff, which easily picks up in the wind and rips the spore out of it's base on the plant, sending it wherever the air current takes it. The thread is often silver in coloration, but in ideal conditions when the plant has plentiful sunlight, water, and minerals, the thread takes a brilliant golden sheen as it's laced with nutrients to help jumpstart the spore within.

The spore itself is fire resistant, the fluff covering providing useful food for the spore if it's set aflame during a fire. The golden variety of the spore is mildly fragrant, slightly sweet and catching to the eye, making it an attractive target for a grazing herbivore (the end result being fertilizer and an exposed spore.)

(If this classifies as a new species, it'd be the Gildenthread Bush, otherwise it's a new method of reproduction for the Hexis Bush.)

Hamun now digest deeper, more nutritious soils quickly. As a result, hamun slowly, but steadily, burrow through the dry soil. Two rear tentacles can expel globules of slime, pressurized by modified slime gland sphincters. They also serve to collapse soil behind the hamun.

Since this increased slime use puts a strain on hamun's water reserves, the shell has extended to keep all of the hamun's fleshy bits covered from the hot sun, while keeping its eyes above soil level. Hamun typically spend their entire lives burrowed like this.

Hamun will eat more or less anything in its path that can be broken down into a slurpable form. Hamun that find water hexis will slurp up their reservoirs if possible with their especially dexterous front tentacles. Hamun will also eat plant roots when possible.

As nest sites grow on the balloon lubs large colonies begin to develop and compete with the single pair Yazdas. The bigger colonies are sinking the blubs so they begin using lighter materials for nests. The lightest material they can find are the remains of dead balloon lubs. They also start to purposefully deliver the pollen that builds up in their new fur to the feeders.

The Forest Stridas have evolved.

what were formerly the Runnas of the Eastern Island's forests have nearly doubled in size to help combat the threat from predators. they weave through the helix forests at a much slower rate than before, conserving energy for the quick bursts of speed needed to combat a Cruncha ambush.

With less need for distance running, their front hooves have become something more similar to dull claws, used for scraping bark and leaves off of trees or for digging in search of tubers.

Their scent glands now vestigial at best, males have developed much larger horns, as well as sharp wrist spurs and shaggy manes. These features are used in threat displays to males encroaching on an alpha's rangale of females, in order to deter the opponent and avoid the bloody fights that ensue if the display contest fails.

The Gesh Dreamers have grown in size, and spend much of their time eating, sitting on their rump, and gazing off into reality. Their thoughts are their own, but they are content with them. vaguely smiling the absent smile of a creature who knows no strife. The various life forms that live on and within it contribute to the strange but harmless living rot of its furry body. symbiotic Yazdas can be seen flitting thru the spore clouds that trail its body, forever altered with their relationship to the creature. to approach a Dreamer pack is to invite experiences that can drive one to the edge of madness, and there, the creature will either drown in insanity and sensory overload or learn to swim in it. If the wind blows the way of a creature and they smell the strange musky, musty, rotten fruit smell of the Gesh Dreamers they will often move on for a few days instead of dealing with them. A few days later, the gesh will move on for whatever reason comes to them.

Some climbing puruus adapt to the balloon forests. They develop adhesive spots on their feet that allow them to climb better on the smooth surfaces of the lubs.
They hunt the Yazdas by flinging their sticky tongues at the flying critters and grabbing them from air.

They have also developed an interesting method of reproduction.
As the balloon forests lack the the still pools of water that they used to lay their eggs in, the puruus have been forced to adapt.
They have developed a habit of building nests made from hexis leafs and other plant material they collect from the shores and bring back to the lub forest. There, they make a vase like structure out of it by gluing the the plant material together with their sticky saliva.
They fill these vases with water and lay their "eggs" there. After the eggs have developed sufficiently, they individual puruus will grab these eggs and "eat" them, thus allowing them to develop safely in a pouch near the adult puruu's stomach, and feed on the nutrients the adult provides.
After they have grown large enough, the adult vomits them out, and the young puruus climb on their "parent's" back and hang there until they are big enough to move on their own.

the Dream Yazdas congregate around the Gesh. they groom, and eat parasites off of them, as well as ensuring their mold, fungus, mildew and various mosses do not grow out of control. In turn they get all the food they can eat, shelter, and a permanent contact high. As a result of burrowing their fur the Gesh "rot" has taken root on their bodies. Eating a Dream Yazda will result in temporary loss of fine motor control, strange behavior, and resulting sleepiness.

In order to keep up with the Stridas, the crunchas of the forest lose most of their armor, and gain longer tails for greater balance. They've also experienced a behavioral change, prefering to sneak up on their prey, then pouncing before it can get away.

Seems like a perfect time for an event, now that we have diversity!

Strong winds are starting to blow across the plains. Sometimes they bring the rain with them, but sometimes they will pick up dust and sand, and quite dry. Sometimes, a big hurricane would form off the Central continent, bring up some sand from the desert, and deposit them on the western part of South continent. These 'yellow storms' bring needed nutrient to the soil, but the sand is quite abrasive in the high winds.

Remember how I said a sandstorm is a feast for the Coral Hamun? These sandstorms allow the CH to expand his range to the western coasts where these dust bowls (to the coral hamun, more like a *delicious* bowl) rage.
Of course, the abrasion is a problem and while some poor losers get their fans torn up, others develop a wiry mucus membrane connecting their feeding fan, allowing them to eat that delicious dirt, dust, sand, and other stuff. They still supplement their diet with an herbivorous salad every now and then.

Of course, expanding into this range isn't just a feast for the Hamun. The Corals are, after all, little bigger than a chihuahua, and unbeknownst to the dim little slugs... well...
Hamuns are basically the Wheaties of the Western Coast. They taste like shit but they're obscenely nutritious. The shell? Don't make me laugh. Against Cathedral Chompa (or other predators') teeth, it just provides a delicious crunch. The Coral Hamun are going to have to develop fast if they don't want to turn into everybody's favorite potato chip.

While most climber Puruus have lost the stings in their tongue-like tentacle, one species has further developed, keeping the trait. The toes elongate, and the skin-layer thickens to prevent water loss like its cousin.
Unlike the others however, it still only has the single modified digestion chamber that works for both digestion and oxygen exchange, along with the free flowing water-based vascular system. Because they still have this passive system, they lead slow lives so that all of the organisms making them up are able to get some nutrition. Receive little energy at a time, so they burn little energy at a time.
They are surprisingly quick in grabbing prey with their tongue. When they take hold, the stingers automatically fire, and release toxins that paralyze the victim, making for an easy meal. For the next few days, they just sit and digest. The tongue is also useful in defense.
Neither social nor territorial, these Sloth Puruus don't really take notice of others near by.

wouldn't a sandstorm make so much noise interference and so much random particles in the air that it would completely blind The Gesh's sonar? How do you even deal with that?

Those sandstorms aren't good for the eyes. Chompas, at least the non cathedrals, develop smaller eyes. This makes sight much less useful for the Chompas, so they'd better get some great hearing or smelling right quick!

Cathedral Chompas don't need to chase prey, they dig up roots with their claws and chin, along with grazing and scavenging. They lose their ability to run in exchange for becoming more sturdy and larger.
While a grey coloration was a recessive trait in them, sexual selection made it the more prevalent, due to the making the colors more vibrant by contrast.

By not living on the west coast. Those living on that coast which don't make changes due to the storms move more inland.

Also, I assume this to be seasonal, not constant.
