Why can't a wizard use a human as a familiar?
I think familiars are usually meant to be animals.

I've been familiar with many of my apprentices, if you know what I mean.
Considering you could have a pixie caster with a pixie familiar, I don't see any reason why a human couldn't have another human as a familiar. It'd make sense in a setting like Dark Sun, where magic users are almost universally corrupt.

In 2nd edition, dragons had a version of find familiar that let them summon humanoids. These days, though, you need Improved Familiar to get anything of a type other than animal.

If one of my players asked to have a person as a familiar, I'd let them based on the following rules. 1) You must take the Leadership feat and then you make your follower from that also your familiar. 2) The bonus you get from this familiar matches any one specific bonus you would have gotten from an animal familiar. You cannot change this bonus. 3) If your familiar/follower leaves you due to alignment issues or just general abuse/neglect/motherfuckery, you suffer the same penalties as from a familiar that died. 4) If you start doing any weird fetishy sexual shit with your familiar/follower, a magically conjured grand piano full of concrete will appear overhead and crush you, and only you, to death.

I did.On accident.The GM persuaded me to take a cursed item flaw. Said item was an ancestral spellbook that had a demon (or something) bound in it. Eventually, I got around to talking to it and released it, except (surprise, surprise,) it tricked me, and got bound as my familiar on release. It was an absurdly intelligent shadow mastiff.But so it goes, right? So we went on a bit longer, and my wizard was a bit bitter that this had tricked him into killing his old familiar (had happened as a side effect of binding it as his new familiar.) While bonding with another player, they proceeded to have the familiar read out of a cursed fairy tale book that we'd found. Reading from it, the shadow mastiff got polymorphed into "A beautiful princess" from the particular fairy tale it had read from. That was expected; the book had functioned like that before. What wasn't expected was that that was the book's last charge, it crumbled to dust, and the curse became (effectively) unbreakable.Best of all, due to an error somewhere along the lines in communication, I didn't realize the dog had been polymorphed into a beautiful naked human woman until after adventure. Effectively, my wizard saw this, shrugged, and then went about his business like it was Tuesday.

At the risk of detracting from recursive leadership loli derp discussions, in my games the 'handwavium rule of magic' that disallows familiars being other humans/intelligent races is that the familiar you are binding must be a being of lesser 'soul' that you. Thus, beings of a higher order than humanity, such as dragons, might have humans as familiars, but humans generally get animals.Exceptions or familiar analogs exist however, as people have attempted to emulate or break the rules and get being of an equivalent standing to become familiars- this has led to mutual oaths of apprenticeship that resemble familiars in some ways, but not in others. Mages debate endlessly on whether these things arrangements actually qualify as a familiar, or what exactly defines a familiar, bound demon, apprentice, etc.

Take team-work feats, grab Alter Self to switch places, gain Natural Armor and HP=1/2 the other sorc's HP.Familliars can also use their master's BAB, so if one of us dips Warblade into JPM or Paladin into Eldritch Knight for PF, while the other goes Arcane Trickster/Spell-warp-sniper, we'd be rolling with high attacks, plenty of skill monkey potential, and SR at mid-levels. Maybe get a Sorcerer or 'caster party, everyone is everyone's familiar.

The 'human as familiar' thing was done in the "Darksword" Weis and Hickman fantasy trilogy back in the 80s. IIRC the wizards of the magitech setting dragged around a bunch of dudes called 'catalysts' as living fuses.They even made a (rather shitty) RPG out of it: "Darksword Adventures".
